The Human Origin and Transmission of Information Assignment
Charting guides: BaZi Chart Calculator
Heaven is clear and constantly moves, occupying a lofty position; Earth is turbid and remains still, occupying a humble position. Therefore, the lofty one moves ceaselessly, while the humble one remains still and stays in its place. Hence, the heavenly stems are in the lofty position, and the earthly branches are in the humble position. When heavenly stems and earthly branches combine, some are virtuous and excellent, some are mutually controlling, some are strong, and some are weak. In determining a person's destiny, one should select among the years, months, days, and hours, considering the amount of virtue and utility. If it matches the person's own stem, then it is judged according to the person's own stem; if it matches the climatic influence, then it is judged according to the climatic influence.
When examining a person's destiny, one must first understand the principles accurately and appropriately, considering both distant and near factors. Sometimes the wife follows the husband, and sometimes the husband follows the wife: if the husband's side has strength, then the husband is taken as the main factor; if the wife's side has strength, then the wife is taken as the main factor. Whether there is strength or not depends on which earthly branch it is paired with: if it is paired with a branch that has strength, then it is considered to have strength; if it is paired with a branch that lacks strength, then it is considered to lack strength. Therefore, when a person is born, the heavenly stem of the year is the foundation, and the day and month pillars are the main factors. The qi originates from the month pillar and ascends to the year stem, which is the highest principle of destiny. For example, if the pairing is precise, such as Bingyin or Jiayin, and if the pairing is deficient and weak, such as Wuyin or Renyin, then by comparing these two groups, the principle becomes clear.
Those who are wealthy and noble have their destiny pillar supported by both the month pillar and the hour pillar, or they are located in the direction of Heavenly Virtue, Monthly Virtue, and refined qi. Additionally, their useful god is in a place of generation and prosperity. Only then can yin and yang be clearly distinguished, and the cycle of order and disorder be arranged. Therefore, where a yang pillar dies, a yin pillar is born, and where a yin pillar dies, a yang pillar is born. Yang metal庚 receives its qi from寅 and proceeds in a forward direction, while yin wood乙 receives its qi from酉 and proceeds in a backward direction. Taking this corner as an example, the other three corners can be inferred similarly. The wealthy often encounter generation and prosperity, while the noble often meet the official position.
For example, the Jia wood is considered to have the Xin metal as its official star, and the Ji earth is considered to have the Bing fire as its nobleman. Another example is when the Gou Chen (which represents earth) is in a favorable position and falls on the Renshen combination, it can attain the rank of the Three Palaces; when the Xuan Wu (which represents water) is in power and meets the Hai or Zi combinations, it can achieve the rank of a first-class official. The癸 water meeting the Gengshen combination often results in holding military positions, while the Xin metal meeting the Wuzi combination can lead to passing the high-level examination. These are all cases where the true official star is encountered, leading to wealth and status. As for the wealthy, they are never without the fullness of the Five Phases. For example, the Jiachen and Jiaxu combinations falling on the Yin or Hai positions bring wealth in gold and silk; the Dinghai and Dingmao combinations falling on the You or Hai positions fill the house with pearls. Conversely, if the Jia day is in the main position and falls on the Geng and Xin metals overlapping, there may be death or imprisonment; if the Bing day is in the main position and falls on the Hai or Zi positions, it indeed results in poverty and low status. However, if the person has a transformed energy pattern, they are not bound by these examples.
The combination of Bing and Xin forms water, and when it reaches the positions of Hai and Zi, it can attain a position in the court. The combination of Ding and Ren forms wood, and when it is at the position of Yin, it can hold a high official position. If the day stem has strength but lacks an official star, it can make a living through skills. If wealth is present but lacks strength, it can only serve as a minor official in the government. The Yin water癸 has refinement, but if it loses its proper position, it becomes a monk or a Taoist. The Yang fire丙 lacks a resting place, and if it meets water, it will certainly become a villain. Metal reaching the fire land brings much wealth but also disperses it quickly. Strong water entering the fire land brings family prosperity. Injury to the head occurs when the metal in You meets the wood of Jia and Yi. Injury to the eyes occurs when the fire丙 is submerged in Hai or Zi. Therefore, the day stem's克制 is the wife, and the wife star's generation is the child. By examining their strength and decline, we can determine their death and extinction. If the child star is at its strong position, there will be many children. If the time column falls into its decline position, there will be no descendants.
To determine the time of birth accurately, one must also examine a person's physical appearance. Those belonging to the metal and wood elements usually have a pale and bluish complexion. Those with the壬癸 water elements tend to have a dark complexion. People with壬 water element who are in season are usually plump, while those with癸 water element out of season tend to be thin. Those with the fire element have a red complexion and a round face, while those with the earth element have a yellow complexion and a sturdy build. Those with the wood element have a bluish complexion and are usually refined and tall, and they are generally intelligent and benevolent. People with the fire element are courteous but impetuous, those with the metal element are fierce and upright, those with the earth element are trustworthy and sincere, and those with the water element are flexible and resourceful. By comparing these characteristics one by one, the time of birth can be determined.
To thoroughly examine the gains and losses of a person's great destiny, one must combine it with the nature of the day's ruler. Gaining the right place but losing the right time is like a field that is dry and waiting for rain; gaining the right time but losing the right place is like a piece of soil falling into mud. Those who have the right time are easily promoted, while those who lose their fortune find it hard to advance. Therefore, fire thrives in the south, water becomes prominent in the north; wood declines when it enters the land of metal, and earth suffers illness when it reaches the south. When something is strong, it grows; when it reaches its death, it perishes; when it is in death, it grows, but when it reaches its strength, it withers. In addition, the heavenly stem's divine force should assist, with the wealth star, which I overcome, being the most important. As for the circumstances of losing ancestral property, there are roughly five types: if the禄 is broken, there is death; if the energy is cut off, there is illness; if the time pillar is in the ghost position and is attacked, there is injury; if the day's ruler is born in a declining place and meets the official position again, it leads to ruin.
Now examining the dangerous conjunctions in detail: when the heavenly stem of the year, the big destiny period, and the current year all suffer together, how can one avoid misfortune when encountering such an evil influence in the destiny period? Now studying the methods of the ancient sages, discerning the auspicious and inauspicious, weighing their severity, and then looking at the destiny, reasoning through the five phases, determining the true image and use from the day stem, using this to verify the auspicious and inauspicious, one can achieve certainty every time. Therefore, the book left by Wu Xian is the true classic and secret.
Earthly Branches Explanation
The original vital energy emerged in the cold and dark void, receiving the distinction of purity and turbidity and thus occupying its respective positions. Those who have attained enlightenment take the earthly branches as the earthly realm and the heavenly stems as the heavenly realm: the heavenly stems represent heaven, standing alongside the earth; the earthly branches represent the earth, connected to heaven. The twelve divisions of the earthly branches are arranged in order, corresponding to the three elements of heaven, earth, and humanity. The reception of the five phases originates far beyond the nine heavens, and the discussion of the eight trigrams dates back to the myriad ages. A person's destiny across three lifetimes originally maintains a normal flow of vital energy; however, one must examine the month pillar within the year pillar, and the hour pillar within the day pillar. If the hour pillar is strong, it indicates wealth and honor; if weak, it suggests poverty and hardship. One must observe where it falls to form an image and where it resides to determine promotion. When earth occupies its own position, it signifies richness and dignity; when water is present in the亥 or 子 positions, it indicates abundant wisdom, smooth conduct, and a measured capacity. By observing the great years and destinies, one can understand misfortune and fortune; by discerning the direction of events, one can judge calamity and auspiciousness; by thoroughly investigating the subtle degrees of the five phases and examining the profound principles of the ten heavenly stems, one can gain clarity.
Jia Wood, when moving to the western metal territory of metal, will suffer from wind illness and hardship; Wu Earth, when encountering the northern water of nourishment, will be like floating duckweed and broken reeds, drifting about with difficulty. The reason the destiny requires 'following' is because it has lost its territory and thus changes; the reason it requires 'transformation' is also because it has lost its territory and thus becomes something else. Once the Five Phases lose their territory, there is no need to talk about the good fortune of禄 and 马 being in the same hometown. On the contrary, if the time pillar is in a strong position, even Kongwang, death, and failure can be disregarded. Things have their aspect of success and their aspect of failure. Therefore, one must rely on the methods of fate, thoroughly investigating the origins of the emergence and disappearance of the Five Phases; carefully examining the unique aspects of Heavenly Virtue, Monthly Virtue, and refined qi, then determining fortune, misfortune, regret, and hesitation.
When gold is strong and fire is vigorous, the hard and strong substance is tempered and controlled, thus there is no loss; when wood is strong and metal is weak, one remains lowly all their life. Water born from metal has a prosperous and continuous official career; wood born from water has a noble virtue, like the high scholars of the Eastern Jin Dynasty's Lu Mountain Lotus Society. As for those with excessive gold, they tend to be violent and warlike; those with excessive water tend to be licentious and indulgent. Those with strong and solid戊 and己 earth are wealthy; those with weak庚 and辛 metal are lonely, poor, and destitute. When丁 fire reaches the position of巳, it is prone to wandering; when辛 metal reaches the position of子, it is rebellious. When己 earth meets戌 and未, there are mistakes; when庚 metal meets亥 and辰, it appears refined.甲 and乙 wood fear encountering the western region of metal transformation;戊 and己 earth prefer to meet the northern region of water nourishment.
When discussing the Six Relations, one should take the Day Stem as the fixed reference point. To determine wealth and status, the Hour Column is the final destination that does not change. The Year Column represents the roots of the ancestors' energy, the Month Column is the fundamental essence of the family, the Day Stem is the personal energy, and the Hour Column is the outcome that brings change. When the Heavenly Stem combines with the Earthly Branch, each should be placed in its proper position. When the original form combines with the transformed energy, each should be compared to determine which type of energy it surpasses. By following these principles, one can assess gains and losses, and determine which category of prosperity and strength applies. Wood contains fire, and when it meets Guisi, there will be advancement and benefit. Earth contains metal, and when it meets a fire cycle, it should retreat. If the Hour Column is weak, poverty follows; if it is strong, wealth follows. Meeting decline leads to low status, while meeting growth and strength leads to high status. When癸water is in the position of Zi, it can attain the authority of two government offices. When丁fire dominates the Li Palace, it certainly attains the position of the Three High Officials. Those with strong丙and丁are courteous, while those with strong壬and癸are intelligent. The above distinctions are divided into upper, middle, and lower ranks, and the order is determined by the Earthly Branches.
Jia and Ji are compatible; sitting on寅 and 未 is the best, on丑 and 酉 is medium, and on亥 and 子 is the worst. Yi and Geng are compatible; sitting on申 and 卯 is the best, on丑 and 酉 is medium, and on午 and 亥 is the worst. Bing and Xin are compatible; sitting on巳 and 寅 is the best, on辰 and 酉 is medium, and on亥 and 子 is the worst. Wu and Gui are compatible; sitting on子 and 卯 is the best, on巳 and 寅 is medium, and on戌 and 亥 is the worst. As for the branches required for the transformation of qi: Jia and Ji transform into earth and require 辰, 戌, 丑, and 未; Yi and Geng transform into metal and require 巳, 酉, 丑, and 申; Bing and Xin transform into water and require 亥, 子, 辰, and 申; Ding and Ren transform into wood and require 亥, 卯, 未, and 寅; Wu and Gui transform into fire and require 巳, 午, 戌, and 寅. Bing fire encountering its dead place does not bring much wealth; the hour pillar encountering癸 water in its prime leads to more metal. Metal in a strong fire environment cannot preserve its form; earth sitting on water leads to a chronic illness that is hard to cure. 癸 water encountering Gengshen can hold an official position; Xin metal encountering Wuzi can pass a high examination. The year pillar determines which category it belongs to, while the hour pillar hides deeper mysteries. Summarizing the main points, there are about five principles, all related to the loss of the official position and being subjected to punishment and clash: if the self is transformed, it leads to death; if it returns to its original state, it leads to death; if the hour pillar is on the ghost position and is further attacked, it harms life; if the day pillar is on the dead place and meets the official position, it also leads to death. Therefore, those who flourish in the strong position will decline in the dead place; those who flourish in the dead place will fall in the strong position. Now these profound principles are revealed—originating from the teachings of the enlightened ones since the Yellow Emperor—should be kept as a secret.
The Origin of Disease Assignment
When discussing human life, one must first identify the main governing element. If there is a conflict among the Five Phases, it becomes the root of all diseases. A person who is blind, deaf, and constantly sighing suffers from afflictions in the head. Someone who is hunched over and constantly moaning suffers from persistent ailments. To understand these phenomena, one must first grasp the principles of destiny and the gateways of yin and yang. By studying the paths of failure in heaven, earth, and humanity, and by comprehending the principles of disharmony in the five internal organs, one can proceed. When Jia is controlled by Geng, and Yi by Xin, wood governs the limbs, so the vital energy is damaged in the hands and feet. When Wu is controlled by Jia, and Ji by Yi, earth governs the muscles, and when wood controls earth, it is like a wind pathogen entering the body. Injury to the form in the distance causes the head to tilt. The earth that controls the body is considered a ghost, leading to blurred vision. When wood is controlled by metal, it inevitably results in children with hand deformities. When fire is subdued by water, it inevitably leads to children who are blind. A person who is tall and slender is due to encountering a flourishing and vigorous energy. A person who is short and small is due to a weak and shallow energy.
Ding fire is strong in the wood trinity of亥,卯,未, which is the place of the fire position, causing excessive heat and leading to upper body dryness and heat illness. Bing fire is at its end in the water trinity of申,子,辰, which is the place of the water position, causing cold damage and leading to lower body cold deficiency. If the earth is damaged, there will be stagnation in the stomach. If the wood is subjected to punishment and clash, there will be sores and scars on the face. If Yi wood is controlled by Xin metal, the eyes' spirit will surely weaken. If Wu earth is controlled by Jia wood, the hands and feet will not be safe. If Gui water meets Ji earth, internal hernia requires needle treatment. If Ren water meets Wu earth, obstruction of urination is very dangerous. If Geng metal is affected by Bing fire, there will be blood discharge. If Xin metal meets Ding fire, there will be stagnation of qi. If metal is punished and clashes with dead wood, there will be external injuries and death. If fire harms weakened metal, there will be malignant sores and diseases leading to death. Wu earth meeting Jia wood brings serious calamity. Xin metal meeting Ding fire brings deep trouble. Some say Geng metal meeting Bing fire leads to tumors, but I think this is not necessarily true. Others say Wu earth meeting Jia wood often causes broken arms, but it is difficult to generalize.
In general, when wood encounters punishment and clash, it leads to skin diseases like scabies; when fire is restrained by ghosts and spirits, it causes mania. Dementia occurs when water falls into the storage place, and speechlessness happens when there is punishment and injury. When earth meets the wood of Jia and Yi, it causes vomiting and damages the spleen and stomach; when metal meets the fire of Bing and Ding, it results in nosebleeds. When water is ruined, it leads to hunchbacking; at that time, even the medical methods of the Yellow Emperor and Qibo would be of no use. When metal suffers punishment and restraint, the spine becomes bent like a tortoise; how could the prescriptions of Bianque and Canggong be applied? Those whose pillars are in decline will face many worries; those with a weak day ruler will have very little fortune.
When the day stem is weak and controlled by the ghost, it leads to disability; if the self is broken and further harmed by metal, suffering follows. If fire moves to the north into water land, yang energy declines and there is no way to cope; if wood is already rotten and meets southern fire land, yin energy weakens and the place of growth is lost. The classic texts do not say that yin relies on yang as its root, and yang relies on yin as its root. When yin contains yang, calamity is less; when yang lacks yin, harm is deep. When xin metal meets ding fire, the family often loses healthy concubines; when geng metal meets bing fire, there is always worry about illness. In addition, there is the 'suspended needle' evil, which causes facial injuries and harms the body; the 'yangren' evil mainly involves pricking the arms and moxibustion on the thighs. When yin stems meet the three punishments, evil energy definitely invades the five internal organs; when yang spirits meet the seven killers, diseases definitely damage the six腑. The so-called ghost refers to calamity, which harms the body and brings suffering. If both the day pillar and the hour pillar are in a declining position, it leads to serious illness that cannot be cured; if all the heavenly stems and earthly branches involve punishments, even minor illness is hard to recover from. When energies are harmonious, peace and balance are achieved; when energy is overly strong, it is not desirable. Therefore, illness, although related to daily care and maintenance, its root definitely lies in the structure of the four pillars.
