又頌曰。

Again he had a verse saying:

紅焰藏吾身何須塔廟新

Red flames hide my body; why need a pagoda temple be new?

有人相肯重灰裡貌全真

If someone approves and values it, within the ashes the countenance is wholly true.

前襄州廣德第二世延和尚法嗣

Dharma heir of the former Elder Yan, second generation of Guangde in Xiangzhou

襄州廣德周禪師。僧問。見話不學時如何。師曰。遍界沒聾人誰是知音者。曰如何是知音者。師曰。斷絃續不得歷劫響冷冷。僧問。承教有言。阿逸多不斷煩惱不修禪定。佛記此人成佛無疑。此理如何。師曰。鹽又盡炭又無。曰鹽盡炭無時如何。師曰。愁人莫向愁人道。向道愁人愁殺人。

Chan Master Guangde Zhou of Xiangzhou. A monk asked, "When one sees the words but does not study them, how is it?" The Master said, "Throughout the whole realm there is no deaf person; who is the knower of the sound?" He said, "What is the knower of the sound?" The Master said, "A broken string cannot be joined; throughout kalpas its sound is clear and cold." A monk asked, "According to the teaching there is a saying: Ajita does not cut off afflictions and does not cultivate meditative concentration. The Buddha predicted that this person would become a Buddha without doubt. What is the principle of this?" The Master said, "The salt is gone and the charcoal is gone too." He said, "When the salt is gone and the charcoal is gone, how is it?" The Master said, "A sorrowful person should not speak to a sorrowful person; speaking to a sorrowful person kills the sorrowful person with sorrow."
