He also gave a verse that said:

In the world I am an idle guest; among people I am a wild monk.

Let them laugh at me as they will; wherever I go I am free and easy.

The nun Liaoran of Moshan in Yunzhou. The idle monk Guanxi, when traveling, came to the mountain, and first said: "If we match, I will stay; if not, I will overturn the Zen couch." He then entered the hall. Ran sent an attendant to ask: "The senior monk has come on a mountain tour; have you come for the Buddha Dharma?" Xian said: "I have come for the Buddha Dharma." Ran then ascended her seat. Xian went up to pay his respects. Ran asked: "Where did the senior monk leave from today?" Xian said: "I left from the mouth of the road." Ran said: "Why not cover it up?" Xian had no reply. (Heshan said in his place: "How did you get here?") He then bowed and asked: "What is Moshan?" Ran said: "The top is not exposed." Xian said: "What is the master of Moshan?" Ran said: "Not the form of a man or woman." Xian then shouted: "Why not change?" Ran said: "Not a god, not a ghost, what would I change into?" Xian then submitted and served as the garden keeper for three years. A monk came to study. Ran said: "Too ragged." The monk said: "Even so, I am a lion's cub." Ran said: "Since you are a lion's cub, why are you ridden by Manjusri?" The monk had no reply. A monk asked: "What is the mind of the ancient Buddha?" Ran said: "The world collapses." The monk said: "Why does the world collapse?" (In the original text, "Zeng yun" is an error for "monk said.") Ran said: "Better that I have no body."
