The Venerable of Mimo Cliff on Mount Wutai always held a wooden fork. Whenever he saw a monk come to bow, he pinned him at the neck with the fork and said: "What demon taught you to leave home? What demon taught you to go on pilgrimage? If you can say, you die under the fork; if you cannot say, you die under the fork. Quickly, say it." Few students had an answer. (Fayan answered for him: "Spare my life." Fadeng answered for him: "Just stretch out the neck to show him." Xuanjue answered for him: "The old man can put down the fork.")
The Venerable of Zhilin in Hunan. He constantly scolded Manjushri and Samantabhadra as goblins, and holding a wooden sword called himself the demon subduer. As soon as a monk came to bow, he said: "The demon is coming, the demon is coming." He slashed wildly with the sword and slipped into his room. He did so for twelve years. Later he put down the sword and was silent. A monk asked: "Twelve years ago why did you subdue demons?" The master said: "A thief does not rob a poor man's house." He said: "Twelve years later why do you not subdue demons?" The master said: "A thief does not rob a poor man's house."
Dharma heirs of the earlier Chan Master Baoji of Mount Pan in Youzhou
The Venerable Puhua of Zhenzhou, whose origins are unknown. He served Panshan and secretly received the true secret, but feigned madness and spoke without restraint. When Panshan passed away, he went to teach in the northern lands. Sometimes in the city, sometimes among the tombs, he rang a bell and said: "If it comes bright, I strike; if it comes dark, I strike." One day Linji had a monk seize him and say: "What is it when it is neither bright nor dark?" He answered: "Tomorrow there is a vegetarian feast at Dabei Cloister." Whenever he saw people of any rank, he rang the bell once, and so he was called the Venerable Puhua. Sometimes he rang the bell by someone's ear, or patted their back. If someone looked back, he held out his hand and said: "Give me a coin." Even out of season he would eat any food he met. Once in the evening he entered Linji's cloister and ate a raw vegetable meal. Linji said: "This fellow is very like a donkey." The master brayed like a donkey. Linji then stopped. The master said: "The little fellow Linji has only one eye." (A monk asked Fayan: "What words did Linji use at that time?" Fayan said: "Linji left it for later generations.") The master saw the mounted officer come out clearing the way with shouts, and he also shouted and made a wrestling stance. The mounted officer had him beaten with five blows. The master said: "Like it, but it is not it." The master once rang a bell in the market and sang: "Seeking a place to go cannot be found." At that time Daowu met him, seized him and asked: "Where do you intend to go?" The master said: "Where have you come from?" Daowu had no reply. The master pulled his hand away and left. One day he entered Linji's cloister. Linji said: "Thief, thief." The master also said: "Thief, thief." They entered the monks' hall together. Linji pointed to the statue of the sage monk and asked: "Is it ordinary or sage?" The master said: "It is sage." Linji said: "Do you talk like this?" The master shook the bell and sang: "The bride of Heyang, the wooden pagoda old woman's Chan. The little fellow Linji has only one eye." In the early Xiantong era of the Tang, about to show extinction, the master went into the market and said to people: "I beg for a plain robe." Some gave him a jacket and some a cloth coat, but he accepted none and left ringing the bell. At that time Linji had someone send him a coffin. The master laughed and said: "The little fellow Linji is talkative." He then accepted it. He took leave and said: "Puhua will die at the east gate tomorrow." The townspeople led one another out of the city to see him off. The master said sternly: "Today's burial is not auspicious." He said: "On the second day I will pass away at the south gate." People again followed. He also said: "Tomorrow, leaving by the west gate will be auspicious." Fewer people went out, and after he went out he returned, and people's intentions slackened. On the fourth day he carried the coffin himself out of the north gate, rang his bell and entered the coffin and died. The townspeople ran out of the city, opened the coffin and looked, and he was no longer there; they only heard the sound of the bell gradually receding, and could not fathom the reason.

Chan Master Zangyi of Jiahe was a native of Xin'an in Quzhou, surnamed Cheng. In the Yuanhe era of the Tang, he left his family and went to Yuelu Monastery in Changsha, and left home under Vinaya Master Lingzhi. In the third year of Changqing he received the precepts at Kaiyuan Monastery in Wuling. Having listened to the vinaya section, he said to his fellow student: "The teachings are vast and numerous; one should knock on the general gate." So he came to meet Chan Master Chang of Mount Longya. Longya told him: "The aggregates and elements are not real, and Buddha-birth is not mine. What name should your true root be called, and from whom was it obtained?" The master awakened at a word. He returned to Mount Ke and avoided the Huichang suppression. Afterward he widely spread the teaching at Longxing. In the third month of the sixth year of Qianfu he departed for good, aged eighty-two, with fifty-six monastic years.

Chan Master Lingxun of Furong Mountain in Fuzhou. He first studied with Guizong and asked: "What is the Buddha?" Zong said: "If I tell you, will you believe it?" The master said: "If the Venerable speaks truthful words, how dare I not believe?" Zong said: "It is you." The master said: "How should I maintain it?" Zong said: "One speck of dust in the eye, and flowers in the sky fall in confusion." (Fayan said: "If Guizong had not had the later words, what would there be of Guizong?") The master took leave of Guizong. Zong asked: "Where are you going?" The master said: "Back to the south of the ridge." Zong said: "You have been here many years; when you have packed, come back and I will give you a sermon on the Buddha-Dharma." The master finished packing and ascended the hall. Zong said: "Come closer." The master came closer. Zong said: "It is cold; take care on the road." Hearing this one phrase, the master suddenly forgot his earlier understanding. Later he passed into stillness and was posthumously named Great Master Hongzhao, with a stupa called Yuanxiang.

The monk bowed again. The master struck and drove him off again. The monk went back and told Jiashan. Jiashan said: "Do you understand?" The monk said: "I do not." Jiashan said: "Fortunately you do not understand. If you did, Jiashan would be mute."

The Venerable Damao of Silla ascended the hall and said: "To know the teacher of all Buddhas, recognize him within the ignorant mind. To know the unwithering ever-abiding nature, recognize it where the ten thousand trees change." A monk asked: "What is the scene of Damao?" The master said: "It does not show its blade." The monk said: "Why does it not show its blade?" The master said: "There is no one to match it."
Chan Master Zhitong of Mount Wutai (who called himself Great Chan Buddha). When he was first in the assembly of Guizong, one night he suddenly made rounds of the hall shouting: "I have greatly awakened!" The assembly was startled. The next day Guizong ascended the hall, gathered the assembly and asked: "The monk who greatly awakened last night, come forward." The master came forward and said: "Zhitong." Guizong said: "What principle did you see that you say you greatly awakened? Try to tell me." The master replied: "The nun is naturally made by a woman." Guizong was silent, finding him extraordinary. The master took his leave. Guizong saw him off at the gate and handed him his bamboo hat. The master took the hat, put it on his head and left without looking back. Later he lived at Fahua Monastery on Mount Tai. At his death he left a verse:
Raising my hand I grasp the Southern Dipper, turning around I lean on the North Star.
My head emerges to see beyond the heavens; who is a person like me?

The Venerable Qi'an of Huangzhou showed the assembly: "If words do not fall into phrases, the Buddhas and patriarchs bestow in vain. If the profound resonance does not fall, who can know it?" A monk asked: "How does one recognize one's own Buddha?" The master said: "When one leaf is bright it cannot be exhausted; when the pine wind's tune ends, one resents that no one is there." The monk said: "What is one's own Buddha?" The master said: "A swift horse before the grass is truly hard to exhaust; to perfect the wonder one must still walk as an animal." Someone asked: "How old is the Great Master?" The master said: "Five, six, four, three cannot be classed; how can it be the same as one and two, truly hard to exhaust." The master had a verse:
In the fierce blazing flames there is a path for people, and one perches steadily atop the whirlwind.
Constant through kalpas, who can mistake it? The bright sun, without words, shines everywhere equally.
The master later lived in Fengxiang.
