Fourth Generation of Chan Master Huairang

Dharma Heirs of the Former Chan Master Xiyun of Mount Huangbo in Hongzhou

Chan Master Yixuan of Linji in Zhenzhou was from Nanhua in Caozhou, with the surname Xing. In childhood he had the aspiration to leave the dust of the world. When he shaved his head and received the full precepts, he admired the Chan school. At first he attended and studied with the assembly under Huangbo. At that time the head seat in the hall urged him to ask a question. The Master then asked: "What is the true meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" Huangbo struck him. Thus he asked three times and was struck three times, and then took his leave. The head seat said: "I had urged him to ask a question, and he only received the Reverend's stick. What a pity for his dullness; let him go and travel elsewhere." The head seat then told Huangbo: "Yixuan, though young, is quite extraordinary. When he comes to take leave, I hope the Reverend will further guide and draw him on." The next day the Master took his leave of Huangbo, and Huangbo directed him to Dayu. The Master went to call on Dayu. Yu asked: "Where do you come from?" He said: "From Huangbo." Yu said: "What teaching did Huangbo give?" He said: "I asked three times about the true meaning of the Buddha Dharma and was struck each time. I do not know where my fault lies." Yu said: "Huangbo is such a grandmother, tiring himself out for you, and you still look for a fault." At these words the Master awakened greatly and said: "So the Buddha Dharma of Huangbo is not much." Dayu grabbed him and said: "You bedwetting little ghost, just now you said you did not understand, and now you say Huangbo's Buddha Dharma is not much. What principle have you seen? Say it quickly, say it quickly." The Master punched Dayu three times in the ribs. Dayu pushed him away and said: "Your teacher is Huangbo, it is none of my business." The Master took leave of Dayu and returned to Huangbo. Huangbo said: "You have come back very quickly." The Master said: "Only because of your grandmotherly kindness." He then paid his respects. While standing in attendance, Huangbo said: "What words did Dayu have?" The Master then told the earlier story. Huangbo said: "This old Dayu; when I see him I will give him a good beating." The Master said: "Why say 'when I see him'? Take it right now." He then slapped Huangbo. Huangbo said: "This madman has come here to pull the tiger's whiskers." The Master shouted. Huangbo said: "Attendant, take this madman to the monks' hall." (Later Guishan brought up this story and asked Yangshan: "At that time did Linji gain the power of Dayu, or the power of Huangbo?" Yangshan said: "Not only did he ride the tiger's head, he also knew how to grab the tiger's tail.") One day the Master went with Huangbo for communal work, and the Master walked behind. Huangbo turned his head and saw the Master empty-handed and asked: "Where is your hoe?" The Master said: "Someone took it away." Huangbo said: "Come closer, I will discuss something with you." The Master came closer. Huangbo hoed the ground with his hoe and said: "No one in the world can lift this of mine." The Master snatched it, raised it, and said: "Why is it now in my hands?" Huangbo said: "Today someone else will do the communal work, and I need not go." He returned to the monastery. (Later Guishan brought this up and asked Yangshan: "The hoe was in Huangbo's hand; why was it taken away by Linji?" Yangshan said: "The thief is a petty man, but his wisdom surpasses that of a gentleman.") One day Huangbo had everyone hoe the tea garden, and Huangbo arrived later. The Master greeted him and stood leaning on his hoe. Huangbo said: "Are you tired?" He said: "I had only just hoed the ground; what tired?" Huangbo raised his staff and struck him.

The Master took the staff and pushed the Reverend over. Huangbo called the rector: "Rector, pull me up." The rector helped him up and said: "Reverend, how can you tolerate this madman's rudeness?" Huangbo instead struck the rector. The Master hoed the ground himself and said: "Elsewhere they cremate; here I bury alive." (Guishan asked Yangshan: "Just now, Huangbo and Linji; what was the intent at that moment?" Yangshan said: "The real thief ran away, and the one who tracks the loot got the stick.") One day the Master was sleeping in Huangbo's monks' hall. Huangbo came in and knocked three times with his staff beside the bed. The Master raised his head, saw it was the Reverend, and went back to sleep. Huangbo struck the mat three times and left. He then went to the upper room and saw the head seat sitting in meditation and said: "The young man in the lower room is at least sitting in meditation; what delusions are you having here?" The head seat said: "This old man must have a wind sickness." Huangbo struck the board once and went out. (Guishan asked Yangshan: "What was Huangbo's intent?" Yangshan said: "Two stakes, one wager.") The Master was planting cedars with Huangbo. Huangbo said: "Why plant so many trees deep in the mountains?" The Master said: "First, to make an ancient record for later people; second, to make a signpost for the mountain gate." Having said this, he struck the ground three times with the hoe. Huangbo said: "Even so, you have already had my stick." The Master again struck the ground three times with the hoe and made a hissing sound. Huangbo said: "My school, upon reaching you, will bring out this record." (Guishan asked Yangshan: "Tell me, were Huangbo's later words only entrusted to Linji, or is there another meaning?" Yangshan said: "He entrusted it to Linji, and also prophesied the future." Guishan said: "What about the future?" Yangshan said: "One man points south, and in Wu and Yue the command is carried out." The Monk Nanta annotated: "Sitting alone and shaking with majesty, this record then appears." And also: "If it meets a great wind, this record also appears." Guishan said: "So it is, so it is.") In the middle of the summer retreat the Master went up Mount Huangbo and saw the Reverend reading sutras. The Master said: "I took you for a person, but you are just an old monk who chews black beans." After staying a few days he took his leave. Huangbo said: "You came and broke the retreat and are leaving before it ends." He said: "I only came briefly to pay respects to the Reverend." Huangbo struck him and chased him away. The Master walked several li, doubted about this matter, and returned and stayed to the end of the retreat. One day the Master took leave of Huangbo. Huangbo said: "Where are you going?" He said: "If not Henan, then Hebei." Huangbo picked up his staff and struck him. The Master seized the staff and said: "This old man, do not strike blindly with a blind stick; later you will strike the wrong person." Huangbo then called the attendant: "Bring the desk and the meditation board." The Master said: "Attendant, bring fire." Huangbo said: "Not so, just take them with you. Later you will cut off the tongues of all the world." The Master then set out. The Master arrived at the pagoda at Xiong'er. The pagoda keeper asked: "Do you bow to the Buddha first or to the Patriarch first?" The Master said: "I bow to neither Patriarch nor Buddha." The pagoda keeper said: "What enmity do Patriarch and Buddha have with you, Elder, that you bow to neither?" The Master flicked his sleeve and went out. (Another version says: The Master asked the pagoda keeper: "Do you bow to the Buddha first or to the Patriarch first?" The pagoda keeper said: "Whose disciples are the Patriarch and Buddha?" The Master flicked his sleeve and left.) Later the Master returned to his hometown and, yielding to the request of the people of Zhao, lived at Linji Chan Monastery south of the city.

Students rushed to him. One day he ascended the hall and said: "On your lumps of red flesh there is a true person of no rank, constantly going in and out of the gates of your faces. Those who have not yet verified it, look, look." At that time a monk asked: "What is the true person of no rank?" The Master came down from the meditation seat, seized him, and said: "Speak, speak." The monk hesitated. The Master pushed him away and said: "The true person of no rank, what a dry shit-stick." He then returned to the abbot's room. The Master asked Lepu: "From of old, one person uses the stick and one person uses the shout; which is closer?" He answered: "Neither is close." The Master said: "What is the close place?" Pu shouted. The Master struck him. The Master asked the Monk Mukou: "What is the white ox on the open ground?" Mukou said: "Hum." The Master said: "Mute." Mukou said: "How is it with you, elder brother?" The Master said: "This animal." Dajue came to call. The Master raised his whisk. Dajue spread his sitting cloth. The Master threw down the whisk. Dajue folded his sitting cloth and entered the monks' hall. The monks said: "This monk must be a relative of the Reverend; he did not bow and did not get beaten." The Master heard of it and had the newly arrived monk called. Dajue came out. The Master said: "The assembly says you have not yet called on the Elder." Dajue said: "Greetings." and returned to the assembly on his own. Magu (second generation) came to call, spread his sitting cloth, and asked: "The twelve-faced Guanyin, which face is the true one?" The Master came down from the rope seat, with one hand folded the sitting cloth and with the other seized Magu and said: "Where has the twelve-faced Guanyin gone?" Magu turned and was about to sit on the rope seat. The Master picked up his staff and struck him. Magu took it, and they grappled into the abbot's room. The Master ascended the hall and said: "Assembly, one who seeks the Dharma does not avoid losing body and life. Three times at my late teacher Huangbo's place I asked the true meaning of the Buddha Dharma, and three times I received his stick, like being brushed by a stalk of mugwort. Now I would like another beating; who can lay hands on me for it?" At that time a monk came out and said: "I can do it." The Master picked up the stick and gave it to him. The monk was about to take it, and the Master struck him. (Later Xuefeng remarked: "Linji is just like a thief who snatches in the open.") A monk asked: "What is the first phrase?" The Master said: "When the seal of the three essentials opens, the red dot is narrow; there is no room for hesitation to separate guest and host." He asked: "What is the second phrase?" The Master said: "How could wondrous understanding allow a question without attachment? A bubble in harmony, how could it fail the mechanism that cuts the stream?" He asked: "What is the third phrase?" The Master said: "Look at the puppets on the stage; the pulling and drawing all depends on the person inside." The Master also said: "A single phrase must have the three mysterious gates, and each mysterious gate must have the three essentials, with expedient means and with function. How do you understand it?" At that time, on the tenth day of the fourth month of the seventh year of Xiantong in the Tang, the year bingxu, the Master was about to show his passing, ascended the hall and said: "After I am gone, you must not extinguish my true Dharma eye treasury." Sansheng came out and said: "How dare I extinguish the Reverend's true Dharma eye treasury?" The Master said: "If later someone asks you, what will you tell them?" Sansheng shouted. The Master said: "Who would know that my true Dharma eye treasury would be extinguished by this blind donkey?" Then he gave a verse saying:

Flowing along without stopping, one asks how; true illumination is boundless, so tell it to him.

Apart from form and name, people do not receive it; having used the hair-splitting sword, quickly sharpen it again.

When the verse was finished he sat and passed away. He was granted by imperial decree the title Great Master Huizhao, and his stupa was called Chengling.
