Dharma Heirs of the Former Venerable Shuangfeng of Fuzhou

The Venerable Gu of Shuangfeng (second abbot). His original occupation was lecturing on the sutras. He went up to Shuangfeng to pay respects. Shuangfeng asked, "Where does the virtuous one live?" He said, "In the city." Shuangfeng said, "Do you often think of this old monk?" He said, "I often think of the Venerable but have no way to pay respects." Shuangfeng said, "Just this thinker is the virtuous one." The Master understood the teaching from this, returned to his own temple, gave up his residence, stopped lecturing, entered the mountain, and served as attendant for several years. Later he went to Shishuang but simply followed the assembly and did not visit or ask questions. All said that Attendant Gu had received Shuangfeng's seal of approval, and it was often heard at Shishuang. Shuang wished to question him on what he had awakened to but had not found the chance. The Master took leave of Shishuang. Shuang took his whisk and saw him off to the gate and called, "Attendant Gu." The Master turned his head. Shishuang said, "If you aim at it, you are off; if you take it as right, you are astray. Not aiming is not right either, and do not make an understanding of it. Unless you know it exists, you cannot know it. Go well, go well." The Master answered yes, yes, and went forward. Soon Shuangfeng entered stillness, and the Master continued as abbot. A monk asked, "At that time the Venerable only faced Shishuang; what was Shishuang's intention in speaking so?" The Master said, "He just taught me not to cling to right and wrong." (Xuanjue said: "Tell me, did he understand Shishuang's meaning or not?")

Dharma Heirs of the Former Chan Master Hongyin, Third Generation of Jingshan

The Venerable Miling of Hongzhou often gave the teaching, "Nothing surpasses this." A monk asked, "May I ask, what is it that nothing surpasses?" The Master said, "It does not go beyond 'is'." (That monk later asked Changqing: "Why does it not go beyond 'is'?" Qing said, "What are you going to call it?")

Dharma Heirs of the Former Venerable Huijue of Guangxiao Monastery in Yangzhou

Chan Master Daoyu was a man of Luzhou, surnamed Liu. At first he visited and attended the Venerable Jue and at once grasped the subtle words. He was then tonsured at Daguang Mountain in Hunan. When his teaching conditions had flourished, he accepted an invitation to stay at Changqing Chan Monastery in Shengzhou. One day the Master ascended the hall and told the assembly, "The World-Honored Maitreya enters the monastery in the morning and attains correct awakening in the evening." He then spoke a verse:

三界上下法我說皆是心

The dharmas of the three realms, above and below, I say are all mind.

Apart from the dharmas of mind, there is nothing more to be obtained.

Look at how he speaks, so very alert. Compared with my followers, he would still be a dull fellow. Therefore with one thought one sees the Way, and the feelings of the three times are exhausted; like a seal pressed in mud, there is no before or after. Disciples, the matter of birth and death is great; you must quickly take it up and not treat it lightly. Karmic consciousness is vast and dim only because of being deluded about oneself and chasing after things. When the World-Honored One was about to enter nirvana, Manjusri asked the Buddha to turn the Dharma wheel again. The World-Honored One scolded Manjusri: "I have lived in the world forty-nine years and have never given a single word to anyone. You ask me to turn the Dharma wheel again, which means I had turned the Dharma wheel before." Yet now, setting up question and answer of guest and host among the assembly is unavoidable, just for beginners. A monk asked, "What is the realm of Changqing?" The Master said, "Walk it yourself and see." He asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "Did the ancients not say: today is the third day of the third month." The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "Stop, stop, no need to speak; my Dharma is wondrous and hard to think." He then came down from the seat. In the second year of Xianping he passed into stillness.

Chan Master Quanfu of Qinghua in Yuezhou was a man of Kunshan in Wu Commandery. His father was a merchant. The Master followed him to Yuzhang and heard of the flourishing Chan assemblies, and so asked to leave home. He then went to Jiangxia and joined Great Master Qingping. Qingping asked, "What do you seek by coming?" He said, "I seek the Dharma." Qingping found him unusual and took him in. Soon he received the precepts, and served with great care. One morning he said to himself, "Learning has no fixed teacher; how should I be tied here like a gourd?" He took leave and went to Yichun and Yangshan to pay respects to Venerable Yong of the South Pagoda. Yong asked, "Where do you come from?" The Master said, "From Ezhou." Yong said, "What is the name of the prefect of Ezhou?" He said, "In the prefect's domain I dare not touch his name." Yong said, "Here nothing is feared." The Master said, "A great man need not test others." Yong smiled and gave his approval. He then traveled to Luling. The magistrate of Anfu County built Yingguo Chan Monastery to invite him and gather students. The route authorities reported it above, and it was given the name Qinghua. A monk asked, "What is the Venerable's urgent way of helping people?" The Master said, "In the morning look southeast, in the evening look northwest." The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "Boasting only of the guest from Dongyang, he does not recognize the treasure of Xiyang." He asked, "What is the true Dharma eye?" The Master said, "One must not wet the bed in broad daylight." The Master later, urged by a monk from his own village, returned to his home region. King Wenmu of the Qian family gave him special respect. In the dingyou year, the second year of Tianfu of the Jin, a Qian garrison general opened Yunfeng Mountain to build a monastery, also called Qinghua, and Dharma companions gathered. A monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "A wooden crane flies from the top of the memorial pillar." He asked, "Meeting a person who has reached the Way on the road, one answers with neither speech nor silence; what does one answer with?" The Master said, "The pupil in the eye blows a whistle." He asked, "How old is the Venerable?" The Master said, "I first saw last year's ninth month ninth day, and now I see autumn leaves turning yellow again." The monk said, "Then there is no number." The Master said, "Ask the yellow leaves." He asked, "What is the final matter?" The Master said, "Six dice, a full bowl of red." He asked, "A deceased monk has passed away; where does he go?" The Master said, "The Yangtze has no break; the gathered foam drifts with the wind." He asked, "Does he still receive sacrifices?" The Master said, "Sacrifices are not absent." The monk said, "How are sacrifices made?" The Master said, "A fisherman's song, raising the oars, the sound heard in the valley." When King Zhongxian gave him a purple square robe, the Master did not accept it. The king changed it to a patched robe and gave him the title Chan Master Chunyi. The Master said, "I am not feigning modesty. I fear later people will imitate me and indulge their desires." In the autumn, the seventh month of the dingwei year, the fourth year of Kaiyun, he showed illness and calmly died seated. A great wind shook and broke the trees of the forest. He was sixty-six, with forty-five years as a monk.

He asked: "What is the Reverend's one phrase for helping people?" The Master said: "I only fear you will not ask." The Master ascended the hall and said to the assembly: "Do you understand? Those who know each other are few. Take care." He asked: "What if one is asked when one does not speak?" The Master said: "Before leaving the mountain gate, a journey of a thousand li." He asked: "What is the self?" The Master said: "Facing south, look at the Big Dipper." He asked: "When both light and objects are forgotten, what is it then?" The Master said: "Knowing." He asked: "Knowing what?" The Master said: "Ninth son of Jianzhou." He asked: "What is Deva's school?" The Master said: "The red banner is on the left." The Master asked a monk: "Where have you come from lately?" He said: "Please try saying it, Master." The Master said: "I took you for a merchant on a trading ship, but you are just a small traveler of this very prefecture." He asked: "I do not ask about two heads or three heads; please directly point out the original face, Master." The Master sat in silence, upright. He asked: "When a thief comes one must strike, when a guest comes one must look; what if a guest and a thief come together?" The Master said: "In the house there is a pair of broken straw sandals." He asked: "Are the broken straw sandals still usable?" The Master said: "If you take them away, the front will be ill-fated and the back inauspicious." He asked: "What is the meaning of hiding the body in the Big Dipper?" The Master said: "Nine nines are eighty-one." The Master said again: "Do you understand?" The monk said: "I do not." The Master said: "One, two, three, four, five." He asked: "What is it like before an ancient Buddha appeared in the world?" The Master said: "A thousand-year-old eggplant root." He asked: "What about after he appeared?" The Master said: "The Vajra glares wide-eyed." The Master ascended the hall, and after a long silence said: "This is a great humiliation. Take care."

The Master said: "Though spiritual awareness turns, empty flowers do not fall." He asked: "The ancient road has no trace; how does one advance?" The Master said: "The golden crow circles Mount Sumeru, and from the beginning is of the same time as the kalpa." He asked: "Then one can reach the other shore." The Master said: "The Yellow River runs clear once in three thousand years." The Liu family of Guangnan was drawn to the Master's teaching and invited him into the palace to preach. A monk asked: "When the king of men and the king of Dharma meet, what then?" The Master said: "Two mirrors reflecting each other, the myriad forms distinct." He asked: "The essentials of the Dharma King's mind: Bodhidharma came from the West, the Fifth Patriarch entrusted it to Caoxi, and from then the robe and bowl were no longer transmitted. I do not know what is entrusted before the jade steps?" The Master said: "A stone sheep walks on the water, a wooden horse foals at night." The Master said: "You close the door for me." He asked: "What is the meaning of Luzu facing the wall?" The Master said: "No connection." He asked: "What is the true eye handed down from the past?" The Master beat his chest and said: "O blue heaven, blue heaven." The monk said: "What harm is there in just asking?" The Master said: "Tired." He asked: "Does this still receive teaching?" The Master said: "I have never hoed the ground to plant empty space." He asked: "What is the urgent point of a patched-robe monk?" The Master said: "It does not go beyond this question." The monk said: "Before this student asked, please speak, Master." The Master said: "Hey." He asked: "All other places show wondrous function; I do not know how it is here with the Reverend?" The Master said: "Hey." He asked: "The ancients took up the mallet or raised the whisk; what is the principle?" The Master said: "Mute." He asked: "What is the one gateway to nirvana?" The Master snapped his fingers once, then spread both hands. The monk said: "How should I understand it?" The Master said: "It is not that the autumn moon is bright; you yourself go sideways eight or nine." He asked: "What is the Reverend's family style?" The Master said: "Three bowls of tea after a meal." One day the Master picked up a cushion and showed it to the assembly, saying: "All buddhas and bodhisattvas and sages who have entered the principle come out of this." He then threw it down, opened his chest, and said: "What now?" The assembly had no reply. A monk asked: "This student has newly entered the monastery, and the summer is nearly over, and I have not received the Reverend's instruction; I hope you will lift me up." The Master pushed the monk aside and said: "Since this old monk became abbot, I have never blinded a single monk's eyes." Sometimes the Master would sit for a long time and look around at the left and right and say: "Do you understand?" The assembly said: "We do not." The Master said: "If you do not understand, I am deceiving you." One day the Master put a cushion on his head and said: "At times like this it is hard to talk with you." The assembly had no reply. The Master sat down and said: "Still a little better."

He asked: "What is it like when one advances and there is no gate?" The Master said: "Too dull." The monk said: "It is not dullness of faculties; I mean right now when one advances and there is no gate, what then?" The Master said: "Spiritual awareness has never been discussed in terms of limits; clinging to the Dharma is limitless and in the dark." He asked: "What is the place where this student should apply effort?" The Master said: "When spring comes the grass turns green by itself, and when the moon rises it is already light." He asked: "What is the place where one does not apply effort?" The Master said: "The mountain collapses and stones fall; on the level plain a fire burns and moves."

The Monk Baoying of Ruzhou (also called Nanyuan; abbot of the first generation, Chan Master Yong). He ascended the hall and said to the assembly: "On the lump of red flesh stand walls a thousand fathoms high." At that time a monk asked: "On the lump of red flesh stand walls a thousand fathoms high; is that not what the Reverend said?" The Master said: "It is." The monk then overturned the meditation seat. The Master said: "This blind donkey." and struck him. The Master asked a monk: "Where have you come from lately?" He said: "Changshui." The Master said: "Does it flow east or flow west?" He said: "Neither." The Master said: "What then?" The monk took his leave. The Master struck him and chased him out of the Dharma hall. A monk came to call. The Master raised his whisk. The monk said: "Today I am defeated." The Master put down the whisk. The monk said: "There is still this here." The Master struck him. The Master asked a monk: "Where have you come from lately?" He said: "Lately from Xiangzhou." The Master said: "What did you come to do?" He said: "I came especially to pay respects to the Reverend." The Master said: "Just as old Baoying is not here." The monk shouted. The Master said: "I tell you he is not here, so what are you shouting for?" The monk shouted again. The Master struck him. The monk bowed. The Master said: "By rights this stick should have you strike me, but I will strike you first. Three or five strokes will make this talk spread widely." When the Monk Siming had not yet lived at the West Courtyard, he came to call. After bowing, he announced: "I have no fine gift. I bought a Jiangxi razor in Xuzhou and bring it as an offering to the Reverend." The Master said: "You came from Xuzhou; where did you get a Jiangxi razor?" Ming pinched the Master's hand once. The Master said: "Attendant, take it." Ming flicked his sleeve and left. The Master said: "Ah la la." The Master ascended the hall and said: "Everywhere only has the eye for pecking and tapping at the same time, but not the function of pecking and tapping at the same time." At that time a monk asked: "What is the function of pecking and tapping at the same time?" The Master said: "When masters meet there is no pecking and tapping; if there is pecking and tapping at the same time, it is lost." The monk said: "This is still not what I wanted to ask." The Master said: "What then is your question?" The monk said: "Lost." The Master struck him. The monk was not convinced. Later this monk, at Yunmen's assembly, heard two monks bring up the earlier incident. One monk said: "At that time did Nanyuan's stick break?" The monk, hearing this, suddenly awakened greatly, and only then saw the place where Nanyuan had answered.
