WhenInauspicious Sha come to support the self, we should not immediately judge it as favorable; when the useful god comes to overcome the world line, we should not regard it as unfavorable. Because within the element of generation and harmony there are two other aspects to be cautious about:刑 and 害. Within the element of harmony there is also a layer of overcoming and injuring to consider. The world line and the self line both prefer generation and harmony and dislike being injured or overcome. However, if we rigidly apply this rule, it would be like tightening the strings of a zither to tune a harp, which cannot adapt to change, and how could it be the way of change? For example, if the day branch or the moving line comes to support and harmonize with the world line and the self line, but these day branch and moving lines are exactly theHostile God of the useful god, then even though they support and harmonize with us, what benefit do they bring? Moreover, within the generation and harmony there are also instances of刑, overcoming, and 害 mixed in, so we should not regardInauspicious Sha coming to support the self as favorable. Another example is when the main actor's line moves and overcomes the world line and the self line. This means the matter is coming to us on its own, and it is bound to be easily accomplished. Although I am being overcome, what harm is there? Therefore, overcoming the world line should not be regarded as unfavorable. This is the flexible method of divination and the subtle principle of adaptability. Scholars should deeply study and contemplate this.

A爻 or harmful爻 should not be attached to the useful god. If a爻 with punishment is used as the useful god, it will certainly bring misfortune: if it is used for a matter, the matter will not succeed; if for an object, the object will be bad; if for a disease, the disease will certainly be fatal; if for a person, the person will be sick; if for a woman, she will certainly be unchaste; if for documents, there will certainly be errors; if for a legal case, there will certainly be responsibility. A harmful爻 as the useful god will also bring misfortune, which is generally similar to that of a punishing爻. If the useful god transforms into a punishing or harmful爻, it is the same. However, it is still necessary to distinguish the severity according to the strength and decline of the爻. How can the positions of death and绝 be held by the body or the world line? If the death or绝爻 is attached to the world line, the body line, or the useful god, it will certainly be unfavorable: if for a person, the person will have difficulties; if for a disease, there will be no salvation; if for medicine, the medicine will be ineffective; if for a matter, it will not succeed. If the useful god changes into death or绝, it is the same.

When a moving line is confronted by a conflicting line, the matter tends to disintegrate. The term 'conflict' should not be considered in a general sense: an empty line encountering a conflict turns from emptiness to reality, while a moving line encountering a conflict leads to dispersion, also known as 'conflict and detachment'; a static line encountering a conflict becomes active, also known as 'conflict and activation'. Therefore, whenever a moving line encounters a conflict, good fortune cannot manifest as good fortune, and bad fortune cannot manifest as bad fortune. If a line is in a state of decline but encounters a supportive force, the matter can still succeed. Generally, if the world line, the self line, or the useful god falls into a state of death or decline but is supported by a generating force, it indicates a rescue from misfortune and a great auspicious sign. The "Heavenly Mystery Treatise" has a section called "Meeting Life in Despair," and if one can deeply contemplate and appreciate it, the profound meaning can be understood. However, the term 'support' should not be rigidly interpreted as the day branch; moving lines and the month builder also count. For example, if on a day of寅 (Yin), the metal of酉 (You) is the useful god, and the chart contains lines of辰 (Chen), 戌 (Xu), 丑 (Chou), or 未 (Wei) earth that move to support the酉 (You), this is meeting life in despair; if on a day of午 (Wu), the wood of寅 (Yin) is the useful god, and the chart contains lines of亥 (Hai) or 子 (Zi) water that move to support the寅 (Yin), this is meeting life in death. Other cases can be similarly inferred.

If the useful god is combined, it must wait until it is broken by a clash before it can succeed. If the useful god in the hexagram is combined by the day branch, or if two lines combine with each other and thus hinder each other, regardless of whether they are favorable or unfavorable, they will not show effect. It must wait until the combination is broken by a clash or the line that combined it is overcome, then the favorable will become favorable and the unfavorable will become unfavorable. The following will explain the method of determining the time of occurrence. For example, if the useful god moves to generate and harmonize with the sovereign line, things are originally easy to achieve; but once it is combined, there will be obstacles, and it must wait until the combination is broken by a clash or the combining line is overcome, then the matter will have a resolution.

If the useful god is in a weak and confined state, it must wait until it becomes prosperous and strong before the matter can be completed. The method of determining the time of events should not be rigidly fixed, but should be flexible and adaptable to avoid errors. If the useful god is restrained by a combination, then the day that breaks the combination should be used for the judgment. If the useful god is weak and confined, it cannot accomplish the matter until it becomes prosperous and strong, so for a yao without vitality, the month and day when it becomes prosperous and strong should be used. If the useful god is prosperous and strong but not moving, then the month and day that moves it should be used for the judgment. If the useful god has some vitality but is already active, then the day it combines with should be used, or the day of the divination should be used. If the useful god is restrained, then the month and day that control the harmful influence should be used. If the useful god is prosperous and strong, active, and also receives support, this is excessive strength, so the month and day when it enters the storage should be used. If the useful god has no vitality but is active and receives support, then the day that supports it should be used. If the useful god enters the storage, then the month and day that break the storage should be used. If the useful god is empty, then the month and day that moves it should be used. If the useful god is strong but empty, or falls into the empty state but meets a collision, a conjunction, or an activation, then the time after this ten-day period should be used for the judgment. If the divination is about a matter that will disperse, then the day when the useful god is dead, in storage, or at its end should be used for the judgment.

The above sections merely summarize the main points to remind later generations; there are more profound principles that scholars should integrate and adapt flexibly, distinguishing the importance and strength of each line to make judgments, rather than sticking to a single method. If something happens quickly, it is because the useful god is active and controls the world; if it happens slowly, it is because the useful god is quiet and supports the self. This is also the method of determining the timing based on the day branch: by observing the activity, generation, and harmony of the useful god to determine the speed and urgency. For example, in divining about a traveler, if the useful god is active or the response line is active, it indicates that the person has already started traveling; however, if it generates the world, the journey will be slow; if it controls the world, the arrival will be quick. Other cases can be judged similarly, and they should also be considered together with the strength and decline of the elements.

In a hexagram, if there is no "parents," the matter lacks clarity; if "children" are hidden and not visible, the matter does not bring joy. In divination, it is said: if a hexagram lacks "parents," the matter lacks clarity; if it lacks "children," people are not happy. This is because "parents" govern the structure and beginning and end of matters, while "children" are the deities of joy. Therefore, without "parents," the matter lacks clarity, and without fortune and virtue, the matter does not bring satisfaction. Although "official ghost" is associated with misfortune, if it is hidden and not visible, it also appears to lack vitality. Although "official ghost" is a source of harm, it is not acceptable to have none at all in the six lines; it is better if it remains still rather than active. If a hexagram has no "official" lines at all, all matters appear lifeless. Therefore, the "Tong Xuan Miao Lun" says, "without ghost there is no vitality," which should be carefully considered. Although "children" are deities of fortune and virtue, having too many brings no benefit. Although "children" represent fortune and virtue, they should not be repeated too much. Too many cause confusion, confusion leads to disorder and lack of focus, so they bring no benefit, which means excess is as bad as deficiency.

Investigating "Parents" concerns the fundamental nature and origin of matters; discussing "Official Ghost" determines calamities and misfortunes. "Wealth" is the god of sustenance and livelihood, while "Children" is the god of fortune and virtue. If "Siblings" appear repeatedly and become active, the matter in question will certainly encounter many obstacles. These sentences provide a general overview of the five categories of the Six Relations. In subsequent chapters, each category will be discussed in detail with its own methods of interpretation, which cannot be fully elaborated here. If the Hexagram Body appears twice, one must understand that the matter involves two aspects. The Hexagram Body of this爻 is the fundamental nature of all things: if two yao in the six yao display the Hexagram Body, it indicates that one is engaged in two matters or that the matter is connected to two different aspects. If the Hexagram Body is accompanied by "Siblings," it suggests collaboration with others. If "Siblings" also afflict the World, or if they are accompanied by an active "Official Ghost," there will be competition for this matter.

If the hexagram body does not appear, the matter has not yet taken a definite direction; if the hexagram body appears and holds the world line, combines with the world line, or generates the world line, the matter has already been decided. The hexagram body should appear and should not change; once it moves, one should be cautious of unexpected changes. If it is originally a favorable god, this rule does not apply. If the hexagram body meets a good god but transforms into a hostile god, it indicates success first then failure; if it meets aInauspicious Sha but transforms into a good god, it indicates difficulty first then ease. If among the six lines there is no hexagram body, but the moving line transformation produces the hexagram body, then this transformation line represents the person involved in the matter. For example, if it transforms into 'children', it refers to monks or Taoists. If the hexagram body holds the world line, or is associated with the person involved, or falls within the inner trigram, it concerns the person directly. If the hexagram body falls on the response line, it concerns others. If the hexagram body cannot be found among the flying gods and hidden gods of the six lines, the origin of the matter is still unclear. If the hexagram body falls on an empty line, all matters will be difficult to achieve; if the hexagram body is weak and confined, all matters lack vitality. Generally, the hexagram body should be considered in terms of the matter, not in terms of a person; if it is about a person, it refers to the person being questioned, not the one asking the question.

Modern people all treat the world line and the self line as the same, which is wrong. In fact, both the world line and the self line prefer to be generated and harmonized with, and they both dislike being harmed or restrained, and this is the same. Whenever the self line restrains the world line, it is auspicious; but when the world line restrains the self line, it is inauspicious. If the self line generates or harmonizes with the world line, all matters are easily accomplished; but if the world line generates or harmonizes with the self line, things will be difficult to achieve. The text continues: "Although the white tiger is activated and meets a favorable deity, it does not prevent it from being auspicious; although the azure dragon is activated and meets a malevolent star, it cannot hide the fact that it is actually inauspicious." The black tortoise, although associated with theft and banditry, requires the official ghost to be present for it to be effective. The vermilion bird, although associated with disputes and arguments, requires the siblings to be present. When predicting illness, it is most favorable to see heavenly joy, but if it is accompanied by malevolent stars, it still brings sorrow. When traveling, encountering going to death is most feared, but if it is associated with auspicious deities, it ultimately brings benefit. Therefore, although there are many names for auspicious and inauspicious deities, they cannot compare to the principle of generation, restraint, and transformation, which is more practical.

In divining the Yi, one should firmly grasp the Five Phases and the Six Relations, and must not mix in miscellaneous deities and ominous stars for interpretation. In ancient times, the deities and ominous stars were left carelessly by Jing Fang, causing great confusion for later learners. Terms like 'Heavenly Joy', 'Nobleman', 'Going to Death', and 'Great Sha' are all examples. Nowadays, people regard them as the main principles, believing in them wholeheartedly, and even the Tian Xuan Assignment makes frequent use of them. Other books are even more so. Among all the books, those that truly do not use deities and ominous stars are probably only the Hai Di Yan, Bu Yi Xuan Ji, and Jin Suo Xuan Guan.

However, with so many deities and omens, how can one distinguish them all? Take the "Six Spirits" for example. The common method is to regard the Blue Dragon as auspicious and the White Tiger as inauspicious. Seeing the Vermilion Bird indicates disputes, and seeing the Black Tortoise indicates theft. It does not distinguish whether the spirit is resting on a favorable or unfavorable line, and simply interprets it according to its inherent nature. I think this greatly misses the profound principles of the Earlier Heaven. Why? Although the White Tiger's movement is indeed inauspicious, if it rests on the line I favor, and comes to generate, support, or harmonize with my personal line, how can it harm me? Therefore, although it is inauspicious, the outcome may still be favorable. Similarly, although the Blue Dragon's movement is auspicious, if it rests on the line I dislike and comes to punish, clash, or harm the useful god, how can it be beneficial? Therefore, although it is auspicious, it cannot prevent the outcome from being inauspicious. The Vermilion Bird, although it governs disputes, will not cause trouble without the presence of "Siblings." The Black Tortoise, although it governs theft, will not be thieves without the presence of "Officials and Ghosts." This shows that the power of the Six Spirits depends on the Five Phases and the Six Relations.

For example, "Heavenly Joy" is a beneficial star; if it appears in a divination about illness, even if the overall卦 image is unfavorable, the person will not die, because it is a favorable deity. However, if it appears on a disliked line and activates, I will definitely interpret it as a sad event rather than a joyful one. "Going to Death" is a malevolent spirit; if it appears during travel, even if the overall卦 image is favorable, it will certainly block the journey, because it signifies death. However, if it appears on a favored line and activates, I will definitely interpret it as beneficial rather than harmful. This is because the weight of spirits and demons is light, while the weight of the Five Phases is heavy. Therefore, encountering good things brings good results, and encountering bad things brings bad results. The key lies in the Five Phases and the Six Relations, not in the spirits and demons. The verification lies in reason, not in the spirits and demons. Why bother with these empty and false statements? Otherwise, I only see them piling up together, which has harmed the correct principles and confused people's minds, how could they all be accurate?

In summary, divine omens are unreliable and often lead to many uncertainties in divination. It is better to rely on the principle of generation, control, restriction, and transformation. Understanding this principle allows for a flexible and comprehensive approach, providing clarity rather than confusion. The Six Relations are fundamental, while the Six Spirits are secondary. As for auspicious and inauspicious divine omens, they are even less important. If one must use them, they should be applied with urgency to the fundamental aspects and with caution to the secondary ones. Using the Six Spirits is sufficient, and they should only be used to infer the nature of events. For determining fortune and misfortune, one should focus primarily on the Six Relations. By balancing the fundamental and secondary aspects, one can truly grasp the subtlety of divination. Students should carefully reflect on this.

Alas! Those who practice divination should first understand these principles, and then it becomes easy. People today rely solely on ancient methods, unaware of adaptability, and few truly grasp the essence. Some use only the Azure Dragon and White Tiger to predict joy and sorrow, others depend solely on water and fire to determine weather, some cling rigidly to empty terms to decide fortune and misfortune, and others force the Hexagram Body to be treated like a human body. There are countless such errors. I have written this book to take the strengths of the principles and discard their weaknesses, to elaborate on the subtle meanings of the ancients and correct the mistakes of modern people. All the places where ordinary teachers and common diviners are stuck in ancient methods are also explained clearly and systematically. Those who are devoted to this art need only understand these previous explanations, and naturally grasp the principle of adaptability. Then, what is difficult about the Book of Changes? Therefore, those who practice divination will find it easy once they understand these principles.

The person seeking divination must also understand these principles, so that the divination will be effective. Although the person interpreting the divination should be flexible and adaptable, the person seeking divination should not be ignorant of the proper way of consulting. Here, the term "后" refers to sincerity. Divination must be done with sincerity: the sages composed the Book of Changes, subtly assisting the divine, precisely because its principles conform to the principles of Heaven and Earth. Therefore, all divination must be carried out with sincerity, reverence, and focused intent, so that good fortune, misfortune, blessings, and calamities will naturally come to pass. Nowadays, many people seeking divination appear with their heads uncovered, bare feet, and short clothes exposing their bodies, and some even fail to burn incense or wash their hands. Alas! To be so careless, yet still hope for divine response, is unheard of; if the divine do not respond, yet still hope for the fulfillment of good or bad omens, is also unheard of. Can we not be serious about this?

Why should we be concerned about divination on a Zi day? There is a saying in the yin-yang calendar books that "on Zi day, one should not consult a diviner," so modern people often avoid this day. I think: the fulfillment of auspicious or inauspicious outcomes is connected to the divine. The divine is everywhere and can be appealed to on any day. As long as one can connect with the divine, naturally everything will be fulfilled. Therefore, the key to divination lies in the sincerity of the person, not whether the day is a Zi day. Moreover, that same set of sayings also includes the taboo of "Chen day is not for crying." Does that mean that on a Chen day, when there is a funeral, one should smile and greet the mourners? Clearly, this saying is not credible.

Let us give a few examples of divination on a day of the Zi branch. On a Bingzi day, Yuan Liuzhuang consulted about being relieved from a conscription duty and obtained the Hexagram of Gou, with all six lines quiet. The 'Official Ghost' was on the Response Line, but it was disturbed by the Day Branch Zi water. The World Line was also affected by the sixth harm. Later, it was indeed verified that he could not be relieved from the duty. Another example is Tan Chaofu consulting about a lawsuit, obtaining the Hexagram of Meng changing into the Hexagram of Wei Ji. The 'Official Ghost' fell into the empty state, and later it was indeed verified that the lawsuit did not proceed. On a Wuzi day, Zhou Fensong consulted about a lawsuit and obtained the Hexagram of Li changing into the Hexagram of Ben. The Day Branch supported the 'Official Ghost' to clash with the World Line, and the 'Wealth' line was also activated. This must mean that wealth was used to assist the 'Official Ghost' and injure the self. Later, it was indeed verified that he was accused by a woman and sentenced. On a Bingzi day, consulting about whether倭寇 would come, the Hexagram of Shi He was obtained. The 'Official Ghost' line was weak and quiet, and later it was indeed verified that the倭寇 did not come; however, the Day Branch combined with the 'Parents' line to form the sixth harm, so he suffered a whole day of rain and wetness in vain.

The above mentioned hexagrams were all divined on the day of Zi, and none of them had any error. If indeed, as the calendar scholars say, the day of Zi is not suitable for divination, then why did these events all come true? Therefore, in divination, what is valued is sincerity, not the selection of days. The entire passage above summarizes the method of interpreting the Book of Changes, which is the main idea of this chapter. If one does not understand these principles, it will be difficult to decide on various matters. Those who have a sincere interest in this should first study this passage. If one can deeply study it, read it repeatedly, and carefully reflect on it, then once the principle is understood, when matters arise and phenomena appear, they will naturally be resolved. What difficulty is there in the Book of Changes then?

One, Heavenly Conditions

Heaven's ways are profound and difficult to measure, how can humans guess at droughts and floods without basis? Fortunately, the hexagrams in the Yi Classic have subtle images that can reveal the weather; however, when investigating the "Parents" and "Wealth," one should not rigidly rely on the second line of water and fire. In the art of divining weather, from the Book of Divination and Omens onwards, water and fire are taken as the main indicators of rain and sunshine, but they do not examine the mutual generation and control among the six relations. This is a narrow and one-sided view. Only the "Eye at the Bottom of the Sea" has the line "Heaven's condition determines the weather through the Parents," which truly captures the essence. Unfortunately, it only hints at the meaning without fully explaining it, so scholars often stick to ancient methods without seeking the underlying principles, which is truly regrettable. For example, ancients took the water line as rain, saying that when water is prosperous and active, it brings sudden rain, and when it is weak and confined, it brings light rain. However, water is strong in winter, does that mean rain only falls heavily in autumn and winter, and lightly in spring and summer? If one understands this, then that theory collapses on its own. Therefore, when divining weather, one should look at the "Parents" and "Wealth," not the water and fire lines.

The 'Wife Wealth' line is activated, and all directions look forward to clear weather; the 'Parents' line is strong, and all under heaven receive the rain's blessing. When divining the heavens, water is not considered rain but the 'Parents' line is considered rain, because the 'Parents' represent heaven, and when heaven changes, it rains. The 'Wife Wealth' line is the hostile god of the 'Parents', and when it moves, it restrains the rain god, hence indicating clear weather. In the hexagram, the 'Parents' line being activated indicates rain, and the 'Wife Wealth' line indicates clear weather. If the 'Parents' line is not present and the 'Wife Wealth' line is also empty, there will certainly be no rain; if the 'Wife Wealth' line is not present and the 'Parents' line is also empty, there will certainly be no clear weather. The 'Response Line' represents the vast void of heaven, and if it is empty, it is difficult to determine whether it will rain or be clear. Divining the heavens is the same as divining human affairs: if human affairs are empty, the matter is difficult to achieve; if the heavenly conditions are empty, the weather is difficult to predict. For example, if there has been a long period of clear weather and one divines for rain, and the 'Response Line' is empty, there will be no rain; if there has been a long period of rain and one divines for clear weather, and the 'Response Line' is empty, there will be no clear weather. If the line indicating rain is activated but the 'Response Line' is empty, it indicates that the rain will come slowly; if the 'World Line' is empty, the rain will come quickly. If both the 'World Line' and the 'Response Line' are empty, it is difficult to determine whether it will rain or be clear, and one must carefully examine the 'Parents' and 'Wife Wealth' lines, and combine them with the day branch to make a judgment.

The World Line represents the earth, and if it is attacked, there will be great changes in the heavens. The Response Line represents the heavens, which is the fundamental basis for all things; the World Line represents the earth, which is the master that supports all things. If the World Line is attacked by a moving line, there will certainly be abnormal heavenly changes: if it is attacked by a line representing rain, there will certainly be bad rain; if it is attacked by a line representing wind, there will certainly be fierce winds, and so on. For example, if the line representing wealth transforms into a line representing official ghost and attacks the World Line, and the divination is done in summer, there will certainly be extreme heat; if the line representing parents is active and there is no line representing children, then there will be thunder and lightning. Other cases follow the same pattern. The Day Branch controls the weather of that day. The Day Branch is the master of the weather for that day, and it should not be treated as the sun as described in the "Golden Lock and Hidden Gate": if the Day Branch is the line representing siblings, there will certainly be clouds and winds; if it is the line representing children, there will certainly be colorful clouds; if it is the line representing official ghost, there will certainly be gloomy weather. Other cases follow the same pattern. If a moving line attacks the Day Branch, it should also be viewed in the same way: if the line representing wealth moves and attacks the Day Branch, the weather will be clear; if the line representing parents moves and attacks the Day Branch, the weather will be rainy. If a moving line is restrained by the Day Branch, the weather it is supposed to represent will not appear. If the line representing parents is active and the Day Branch supports it, there will be heavy rain; if the line representing wealth is active and the Day Branch supports it, there will be intense sunlight.

The "Children"爻 governs the sun and moon in the heavens. The "Children" in a yang palace represent the sun, while those in a yin palace represent the moon: when prosperous and strong, they shine brightly and clearly; when declining, they become dim and dark; if falling empty or hidden, even though the sky is clear, the sun and moon are obscured. If the "Children" transforms into another "Children"爻, it signifies bright sunlight and colorful clouds; if it is yin, it represents a bright moon with shining stars. If the "Children" transforms into a "Mourning" or "End"爻, it starts off clear but eventually turns dark. To understand wind and clouds, rely on the "Siblings"爻. Wind and clouds are discussed through the "Siblings"爻: when prosperous and active, the wind is strong and the clouds are dense; when dead or weak, the clouds are light and the wind is gentle. If the "Siblings" transforms into "Children," it indicates clear wind and colorful clouds; if it transforms into "Official Ghost," it signifies stubborn clouds and harsh wind. To know about thunder and lightning, look at the "Official Ghost"爻. The "Official Ghost" governs thunder and lightning, and any movement brings thunder: when prosperous, it is thunderclaps and lightning; when weak, it is a flash of lightning in the clouds. If there are two "Official Ghost"爻 moving in the hexagram, it indicates thunder and lightning together; if the "Official Ghost" transforms into another "Official Ghost," it is the same. If the "Official Ghost" transforms into "Wealth" or if there is no "Parents" in the hexagram, then there will be thunder but no rain.

Divination of weather must also consider the seasons. "Parents" indicate rain, and "Wealth" indicates clear weather; these remain consistent throughout the four seasons. However, "Children," "Official Ghost," and "Siblings" should be interpreted according to the seasons and should not be fixed in one interpretation, as explained in detail below. It is also necessary to consider the Five Phases in conjunction. Although divining weather should not focus solely on water and fire, the Five Phases associated with the Six Relations must also be examined. "Parents" indicate rain in all seasons: if it is over metal or water, the rain will not stop; if it is over fire or earth, although it may rain, the rain will not last long; if it is only over earth, the rain may stop but the clouds will remain; if it is over wood, there will be both wind and rain.

The 'Wealth'爻 indicates clear weather throughout the four seasons. If it is associated with Metal, there will be smoke and haze; if associated with Water, there will be morning dew or clear weather that does not last long; if it transforms into the 'Parents'爻, it indicates rain. If associated with Wood, the weather is clear but with wind; if associated with Earth, the weather is clear but with clouds; if associated with Fire, the sun shines brightly. The 'Siblings'爻 indicates wind throughout the four seasons when associated with Wood; clouds when associated with Earth; both wind and clouds when associated with Fire, and the same applies if it transforms into 'Siblings'. If associated with Metal, there will be wind and sand; if associated with Water, there will be thick clouds. Additionally, during summer and early autumn, encountering Fire 'Siblings' indicates extreme heat; during winter and early spring, encountering Water 'Siblings' indicates extreme cold.

The 'Children' line encountering metal indicates stars and moon throughout the four seasons; when the 'Children' line is yang and encounters metal, it signifies ice and frost in the winter and the first month, and white clouds in summer and autumn. When the 'Children' line encounters wood, it indicates floating filaments in the second and third months, and during other months it signifies sunlight and daylight. When encountering water, it indicates hail, snow, and frost in the first month and winter, and morning dew in summer, autumn, and the second and third months. When encountering fire, it signifies the sun throughout the four seasons. When encountering earth, it signifies unusual clouds in summer and autumn, colorful clouds in the second and third months, and the sun in winter.

The 'Official Ghost' line encountering fire, or the Earthly Branches of 'Wei' and 'Xu' (earth), is considered a lightning break. All other cases are considered a thunder break. If the 'Official Ghost' line moves in the first lunar month and transforms into 'Parents', or if the 'Official Ghost' and 'Parents' lines move together, it indicates spring snow, which is destructive to living things and not considered auspicious. If the 'Official Ghost' line moves between the second lunar month after the spring equinox and the eighth lunar month before the autumn equinox, it is considered a thunder break. Before the spring equinox, thunder has not yet begun, so it indicates a damp cloud with rain, not thunder. After the autumn equinox, thunder has already ceased, so if the 'Official Ghost' line moves, there will be fierce winds uprooting trees and loud noises in the forest. During the period between when thunder has ceased and when it has not yet begun, if the 'Official Ghost' line carries 'Three Punishments' and 'Six Harm' and is strong enough to overcome the 'World' line, the thunder will indicate a great anomaly, even in winter, there will be a sound that shakes hundreds of miles.

In the卦 of clear weather, if the "Official Ghost" appears again, there will be smoke and mist in the sky. The卦 already shows a sign of clear weather, but if the Official Ghost moves, there must be thick smoke and fog, or strong winds, or a change to cloudy and gloomy weather. In winter, it may be very cold, in summer, very hot, or there may be an eclipse of the sun or moon. In any case, it will not be a time of calm weather and bright sunshine. In the卦 of rain, if the "Children" appears, there will be lightning and rainbows in the sky. The卦 already shows a sign of rain, but if the Children move, there will be either lightning or a rainbow. Because the Children represent colors, and both lightning and rainbows are colorful phenomena, they are classified together. If someone rigidly believes that the Children only represent the sun, moon, and霞 (misty light), then it would be like trying to tune a zither by fixing the琴柱 (the tuning pegs) as if it were a瑟 (a different stringed instrument).

The Response Line is occupied by "Children," and there is not even the slightest flaw in the clear sky. Whenever a clear weather hexagram occurs, and the Response Line is occupied by "Children" and activates, that day will certainly be bright and clear. Alternatively, if "Wealth" occupies the Response Line and transforms into "Children," it will also be the same. Because the Response Line represents Heaven, and "Children" is the spirit of clear and bright light. The World Line is occupied by the Earthly "Official Ghost," and yellow sand spreads widely over thousands of villages. In a clear weather hexagram, if the World Line is occupied by the Earthly "Official Ghost" and activates, or if the Earthly "Official Ghost" moves to clash and control the World Line's body line, that is called sand falling from the sky. If "Siblings" transform into the Earthly "Official Ghost," it is the same. In autumn and winter, this often indicates cloudy and gloomy weather; but if it comes from "Children," there will be clouds like iron cavalry galloping.

Triple Harmony forms a wealth pattern, but when asking about rain, it is not advisable to include it in the hexagram. If the third line of the hexagram forms a Triple Harmony, then according to the five categories of the Six Relations, it should be interpreted accordingly: if it forms a wealth pattern, it indicates rainbows; if it forms an official ghost pattern, it indicates thunder and lightning, and so on. Therefore, if the weather has been clear for a long time and the hexagram shows a Triple Harmony wealth pattern, rain will certainly not come; similarly, if the weather has been rainy for a long time and the hexagram shows a Triple Harmony parents pattern, it also indicates no rain. Here is an example: on the day of Jiashen in the fifth lunar month, someone asked about clear weather and got the hexagram "Following" changing to "Salt." The lines of Chen and Zi both moved, forming a parents water pattern with the day branch of Shen. Later, it rained continuously. Among the five categories, if "parents" is involved, when seeking clear weather, it is strange that the forbidden evil star falls into the empty position. The five categories refer to wife wealth, official ghost, parents, siblings, and children; among these five, only parents indicate rain. If the parents line falls into the empty position, or is weak and confined without movement, rain is unlikely; if there is a moving line that transforms into parents, it indicates rain, while transforming into wife wealth indicates clear weather.

The "Wealth" element transforms into the "Official Ghost," causing the weather to be unstable. Wealth signifies clear skies, while the Official Ghost signifies overcast and gloomy weather. Therefore, when Wealth transforms into Official Ghost, or Official Ghost transforms into Wealth, or both Wealth and Official Ghost are active, it definitely indicates unstable weather, either starting overcast and then clearing, or starting clear and then turning overcast. If the "Children" element is not present in the hexagram to restrain the Official Ghost, and Wealth instead supports the Official Ghost, then the weather will definitely remain gloomy. When "Parents" transform into "Siblings," the weather becomes unpredictable. Parents represent rain, and Siblings represent wind; when these two lines transform into each other or both are active, it indicates a storm with both rain and wind. When determining the sequence, the active line comes first, and the transformed line comes later; if both lines are active, the stronger one comes first, and the weaker one comes later. There is also another view: the stronger element has more influence, while the weaker one has less.

The term "parents" transforms into "children," and after the rain, a rainbow like a dragon's bridge hangs across the sky; "siblings" connected with "fortune virtue" and "children" leads to a bright moon resembling a toad appearing through the clouds. The sun, moon, rainbow, and mist all belong to "children": if they arise from the "parents" line, there must be a rainbow after the rain; if they arise from the "siblings" line, then sunlight shines through the clouds. In winter, when "siblings" transform into "children," snowflakes drift with the wind; in summer and autumn, it is wind sweeping away clear clouds. "Children" belong to the yin, indicating clear wind and bright moon; in spring, which is yang, it means gentle wind and warm sun. If "parents" are strong and "wealth" is weak, and "siblings" move to produce "children," then it should be interpreted as lightning in the clouds. These matters should be further carefully examined.

The 'Parents'爻 with the month builder indicates continuous rainy weather for a whole ten days. Among the six relations, none are favorable when they meet the month builder, except for the 'Children'爻, which is auspicious. If the 'Parents'爻 meets the month builder, it indicates prolonged rain; if the 'Wealth'爻 meets the month builder, it indicates prolonged clear weather; if the 'Parents'爻 transforms into a water爻, it results in flooding; if the 'Wealth'爻 transforms into a fire爻, it results in drought; even if it does not transform into water or fire, as long as it harms the world line爻, it will have the same effect. The 'Siblings'爻 sitting in the position of growth indicates strong winds for several days. The concept of growth signifies the beginning of something, growing until it reaches prosperity, then declining and dying. Therefore, when a爻 meets growth, it is difficult to stop immediately: if the 'Parents'爻 meets growth, rain will continue for several days; if the 'Siblings'爻 meets growth, wind will continue for several days; if the 'Official Ghost'爻 meets growth, the clouds will not disperse; if the 'Wealth'爻 meets growth, rain is unlikely; only when it reaches the墓 or绝 positions will the rain stop, the wind cease, the clouds clear, and the weather turn sunny. The same applies to cases where growth is generated through transformation.

The parents and wealth lines have no external support, so drought and flood will occur in a regular pattern. If the official ghost falls into an empty position or is hidden, the parents also lack strength, while the wealth line is strong and active, drought will certainly happen. If the children fall into an empty position or are hidden, the wealth line also lacks strength, while the parents are strong and active, flood will certainly happen. Whenever such a hexagram appears, it is most dangerous if the day builder, month builder, and moving line also come to support and combine with them: then flood will surely drown fields and houses, and drought will surely wither grass and trees. If the parents and wealth lines are strong and active, but there are other controlling factors, or if they fall into the dead, tomb, or end positions without support, then drought will be limited and flood will be occasional, and disaster will not occur. If the fortune virtue god is accompanied by punishment, the sun and moon will certainly be eclipsed. If the children are punished and active, transforming into the official ghost, or if the official ghost moves to punish the children, or if the parents are accompanied by the snake to attack the children, it indicates an eclipse of the sun or moon: if the children are yang lines, it indicates a solar eclipse; if they are yin lines, it indicates a lunar eclipse. For example, on the seventh day of the eighth month, I divined the moonlight on the Mid-Autumn night and got the hexagram of Family changing to Observing. Later, it was indeed fulfilled with heavy rain.

Divination for rain is unfavorable when the 'Wealth' position meets a clash. For rain divination, the 'Wealth' hexagram should be still. If the 'Wealth' hexagram is disturbed by the day branch, the hidden 'Parents' hexagram will be harmed, and rain is unlikely. Even if the 'Parents' hexagram moves, the rain will be light. Otherwise, there will be no rain that day, and rain may only occur on the day when the 'Wealth' hexagram reaches its tomb or its end. Conversely, if the 'Parents' hexagram is originally still and meets a clash, rain is likely. For divination of clear weather, it is favorable for the 'Parents' hexagram to reach its tomb. Tomb signifies darkness and stagnation: if the 'Parents' hexagram moves and reaches its tomb, there may be some rain, but it will not fall on the ground. If the 'Wealth' hexagram moves and reaches its tomb, the weather will be cloudy and sunny alternately, still not clear. For example, on the day of Dingchou in May, divination for clear weather yields the hexagram 'Zun' changing to 'Wuxiang'. The 'Parents' hexagram although moves, sits on the tomb hexagram. Later, it was verified that the sky was clear but the air remained stagnant.

"Children" are hidden while "Wealth" appears, and the person waiting under the eaves to dry things remains gloomy. Generally, when predicting clear weather, the Wealth hexagram is the main focus. If there is only Wealth without Children, or if the Children are in an empty position and become weak, then the day will be partly cloudy and partly sunny. Because Wealth only indicates clear weather, not the sun itself; only when Children appear and are not in an empty position, or when they are active, strong, supported, or meet a clash, will there be sunlight. Moreover, without Children, the Wealth hexagram loses its vitality, and the Official Ghost hexagram dominates alone, which is certainly not a sign of prolonged clear weather. When "Parents" are weak and "Official Ghost" is strong, the travelers at the gate still hesitate and are unwilling to move. When predicting rain, the Parents hexagram is the main focus. If Parents are weak, dying, or in decline, there is no hope for rain. If the Official hexagram is strong and active, supporting the Parents, there may still be rain. However, it is forbidden for Parents to be in an empty position or to be restrained by the Day Branch. In such cases, there will still be no rain; however, there will certainly be heavy clouds carrying rain that remain stagnant and do not disperse.

The "Children" line combines with the Response Line and the Wood line becomes active, causing a sense of drifting threads in the sky. The Children represent a spirit of openness and freedom; if they are on a Wood line that becomes active and combine with the Response Line, or if they generate and harmonize with the World Line, it indicates a pleasant day with gentle winds and warm sunlight. In summer, it is the soothing breeze that dispels heat; in autumn, it is clear winds and bright moonlight; in winter, it is snowflakes like jade falling from the sky as a good omen. If the Children belong to Water, it can be compared to dewdrops. The "Official Ghost" line conflicts with the World Line and combines with the Metal line, causing a heavy mist in the sky. The hexagram originally indicates clear weather, but if the Ghost line is on a Metal or Water line that becomes active and conflicts with the World Line, or if it is on the Hexagram Body and conflicts with the Response Line, or if it becomes active on the Response Line itself, it indicates a scene of thick smoke and heavy fog blocking the fields. If the "Parents" line becomes active, it should be interpreted as thunder, not fog.

If a hexagram encounters an invisible conflict, even if the useful god is empty, there is still hope. When predicting rain, fear that the 'parents' are empty; when predicting clear weather, fear that the 'wealth' is empty. If either of these two are empty, there is no hope. But if the day branch conflicts with them, then the conflict is not empty, and after that day, there will be hope. To determine the date, use the day and time that conflict with it. If a line is restrained by a combination, even if it moves, it has no effect. Normally, if the 'parents' move, there will be rain, and if the 'wealth' moves, the weather will clear. But if the day branch or moving line combines with it, it is called being restrained by a combination. Even though it moves, it is treated as a static line. If the wealth line is restrained by a combination, there will be no clear weather; if the parents line is restrained by a combination, there will be no rain. This is like the image of thick clouds without rain. In the year of Xinchou, in autumn, I was staying in Jiangdong and wanted to return. At that time, there was a great typhoon. On the day of Dinghai, I divined the hexagram 'Guin' changing to 'Zhen'. Both 'siblings' and 'parents' lines moved, but they combined with the response line. Later, indeed, the wind stopped at the time of the day branch.

When the "Parents" are restrained by a combination, if the ghost爻 clashes and breaks that combination, there will be thunder followed by rain. The "Parents" being restrained usually means no rain; but if the ghost爻 activates and breaks that restraint, it indicates rain is coming but not yet, and rain will come only after thunder. If the combination is broken by the "Siblings"爻, then wind comes first and then rain; if broken by the "Children"爻, then lightning comes first and then rain; if broken by the day branch, it is also judged the same way. When the "Wealth" is restrained by a combination, if the "Siblings"爻 breaks that combination, there will be no clear sky without wind. The "Wealth" being restrained usually means no clear sky; but if the "Siblings"爻 in the hexagram activates and breaks that restraint, or if the day branch is the "Siblings" and clashes and breaks it, then clear sky will come only after wind, and without wind, there will be no clear sky. For example, on a Xinwei day, if one asks about clear weather and gets the hexagram "Loss" changing to "Small Accumulation," the "Wealth" is restrained, but the day branch brings the "Siblings" to break the restraint, and later it indeed rained after wind came.

The interaction between the Kan hexagram and the Xun hexagram indicates snowflakes falling on this day. Each of the eight trigrams represents specific phenomena: Qian represents Heaven and clear weather, Kun represents Earth and darkness, Kan represents Water and rain, snow, hail, Li represents the Sun,霞, and lightning, Gen represents clouds, Zhen represents thunder, Xun represents wind, and Dui represents stars, moon, mist, and dew. If a divination is performed in winter and the Kan hexagram transforms into Xun or Xun transforms into Kan, there will certainly be signs of wind and snow. Similarly, if the Parents and Siblings hexagrams interact and the Children hexagram also becomes active, the same result occurs. If the Parents hexagram is active and the Children hexagram transforms into another Children hexagram, this signifies the harmonious coexistence of snow and moonlight.

The trigrams consist of yin lines and yang lines, each making up half. Today's good rain brings comfort to the farmers. Rain is an image formed by the convergence of yin and yang energies, so ancients said, "When yin and yang harmonize, then rain falls." When predicting weather and the hexagram shows equal parts yin and yang, rain is certain; however, one still needs to consider the combination of "Wealth" and "Parents." A hexagram entirely composed of yang lines is quiet; if it predicts rain, there will be no rain, but if it predicts clear weather, there will be clear weather. However, if there is movement, it indicates rain. A hexagram entirely composed of yin lines is quiet; if it predicts clear weather, there will be no clear weather, but if it predicts rain, there will be rain. However, if there is movement, it indicates clear weather. This is because yang movement transforms into yin, and yin movement transforms into yang. If a hexagram entirely composed of yin lines moves and the "Parents" line is involved, rain will eventually come. If a hexagram entirely composed of yang lines moves and the "Wealth" line is involved, the weather will eventually clear.

The term "brothers" belongs to the wood element and is active, connected to the Wind trigram. Why is the river god Fengyi so rampant? When predicting weather and "brothers" are in the wood element within the Wind trigram, they become strong and attack the world line, indicating a risk of typhoon. If "parents" also move at the same time, there will certainly be wind and rain. If "brothers" transform into "official ghost," the wind will damage objects; if they transform into water, wind and rain will both arrive; if they transform into fire or earth, it will only be cloud formation. The term "wife's wealth" belongs to the fire element and is active, representing the yang trigram of Heaven. Why is the drought demon so fierce? If the wealth line is on fire and active, or comes from fire, or transforms into fire, or enters the Heaven trigram, and also receives support and assistance from the month builder, day branch, and moving lines, it will certainly indicate a severe drought. If there is no water line among the six lines, if "parents" are dead or weak, or if both "parents" and water lines are empty, while "wife's wealth" and "children" are strong and active, it will also be a sign of a severe drought.

Six dragons are controlling the sky, due to the 'Tengshe' moving in the Zhen trigram. The Zhen trigram is also the symbol of a dragon: if 'Qinglong' and 'Tengshe' are active in the Zhen trigram, there must be a dragon appearing. Even if it is not 'Qinglong' or 'Tengshe', as long as the Chen or Si positions are prosperous and strong, it also indicates the presence of a dragon. If it originates from the 'Parents'爻, it means rain comes first and then the dragon appears; if it produces the 'Parents'爻, it means the dragon appears first and then the rain comes. If the 'Parents'爻 is quiet or falls into an empty position or is hidden, then even though the dragon appears, there will be no rain. The same applies if it produces the 'Wife's Wealth'爻. If the 'Tengshe', 'Qinglong' or the Chen and Si positions are connected with the 'Official Ghost' and are active, then it is not a dragon but rather lightning like a golden snake flashing around.

Five directions' thunder gods drive away lightning, all because the "Official Ghost" is active in the Li palace. Lightning is the light of thunder: sound is thunder, and silence is lightning. If the ghost line is active in the Li palace, it should be interpreted as using five thunder forces to drive lightning, because Li has the image of color; a ghost line of fire is the same. When metal transforms into fire, and fire transforms into metal, thunder and lightning occur together. Whenever the ghost line is prosperous and strong, thunder is loud; when it is weak and confined, thunder is lighter. If it controls the world line and belongs to metal, or if it has self-punishment, even if it is not prosperous and strong, the sound is still startling. If it belongs to earth but lacks vitality, it is a faint, light thunder. Both "Golden Locks and Hidden Gate" and "Divination Secrets" interpret a ghost line in metal or fire as lightning. I think metal represents sound, and fire representing lightning is acceptable, but why does metal also represent lightning? Therefore, I do not adopt this interpretation.

The planet Saturn aligning with the 'Parents' indicates a sky where clouds move and rain is bestowed; the Wood virtue supporting the self line represents a scene of warm sunshine and gentle winds. Earth governs clouds, and the Parents govern rain, so when the Earth line is associated with the Parents and moves, it shows the image of clouds moving and rain being bestowed. Wood governs wind, and Wealth governs clear weather, so when the Wood line is associated with Wealth and moves, it shows the scene of warm sunshine and gentle winds; this is also true in transformations. Much fog and smoke occur when both the 'Wealth' and 'Official Ghost' lines are active. Wealth movement usually indicates clear weather, but if the Official Ghost line also moves, or if the Day Branch brings the Official Ghost to restrain the World Line, it must be that there was first smoke and fog, then clear weather. When Officials are strong and Wealth is weak, the fog is thick and heavy like fine rain; when Officials are weak and Wealth is strong, the smoke is misty and dissipates quickly, leading to clear weather.

The line representing the self is afflicted by an image of similar elements in mutual control; although the sky is clear, the brilliance of the sun remains hidden. If the world line holds the fortune virtue 'children', even if it rains, the thunder remains silent. In divination about weather, any image that is overcome by the world line will certainly not appear. For example, if 'siblings' hold the world line, siblings will overcome 'wealth', and even if wealth is prosperous and strong, it will not be a clear day; if 'children' hold the world line, children will overcome 'official ghost', and even if the official ghost is active, although it rains, there will be no thunder. The rest follows the same principle. If the world line is quiet or falls into emptiness, this rule does not apply. If the world line is overcome by the day branch, then that image will certainly not appear.

When the "Parents" are in an empty position and the "Wealth" is hidden, one must examine the auxiliary lines. For predicting rain, the "Parents" are the main factor and the "Official Ghost" is the auxiliary; for predicting clear weather, the "Wealth" is the main factor and the "Children" are the auxiliary. If both the "Parents" and "Wealth" are in empty positions, or neither appears, or one is empty and the other is hidden, then whether it will rain or be clear is uncertain. One must examine the strength, weakness, movement, and stillness of the auxiliary lines to make a decision. For example, if the "Official Ghost" is strong and active, and the day branch, month branch, and moving line all support and harmonize with it, rain is likely. If the "Children" are strong and active, and the "Official Ghost" is in a state of burial or decline, then the weather is likely to clear. If both the "Official Ghost" and "Children" are still, then one should look at which line is supported, harmonized, conflicting, or combined with the day branch. For instance, on the 15th day of the fifth month, which is the Jia Xu day, after a long period of clear weather, one divines for rain and gets the Zhun hexagram. The "Wealth" line does not appear, the "Parents" are weak and empty, which is a sign of uncertainty regarding rain or clear weather. Fortunately, the day branch both conflicts and combines with the hexagram, and the earth "Official Ghost" moves covertly. Later, rain indeed occurred. However, since the "Official Ghost" is on the earth line and needs to control water, the rain was not very heavy.

To determine the appropriate day for an event based on the day it is overcome, one should understand the method of divination. For predicting rain, look at the 'Parents' line; for predicting clear weather, look at the 'Wealth' line; for predicting wind, look at the 'Siblings' line. If there has been prolonged clear weather and rain is expected, if the Parents line is weak, rain will come on the day when it is strengthened or flourishing; if the Parents line is quiet, rain will come on the day it is disturbed; if the Parents line has already activated, rain will come on the day it combines with another line; if the Month Builder is the Wealth line, rain will come after this month; if there is no Parents line in the hexagram, rain will come on the day when the Wealth line is buried or exhausted. If there has been prolonged rain and clear weather is expected, if the Wealth line is weak, rain will stop on the day when it is strengthened or flourishing; if the Day Branch is the Wealth line, rain will stop on the same day; if there is no Wealth line in the hexagram, rain will stop on the day when the Parents line is buried or exhausted; if the Month Builder is the Parents line, rain will stop after this month; if the Day Branch is the Parents line, even if the Wealth line is strong, rain will not stop on that day. If a weak line is supported by another line, use the supporting line to determine the day. If the prediction is only for one day's weather, determine the day based on the time of day.

To make the interpretation detailed, one should distinguish between the yin and yang of the hexagrams to determine day and night. The division of yin and yang should be based on the hexagram's palace, not merely on the lines: yang represents day, and yin represents night. There is another view: the yang lines of the outer trigram are interpreted in the morning, and the yang lines of the inner trigram are interpreted in the afternoon; the yin lines of the outer trigram are interpreted in the upper half of the night, and the yin lines of the inner trigram are interpreted in the lower half of the night. Another view says that yang transforming into yin is active during the day and active during the night, while yin transforming into yang is active during the night and active during the day. There is yet another view: the yang lines of the yang palace are interpreted in the morning, and the yin lines of the yang palace are interpreted in the afternoon; the yin palace follows the same pattern. To make the interpretation precise, one should discern the strength and decline to determine the weight. Strength and decline are based on the four seasons: when strong, the influence is heavy; when weak, the influence is light; if there is energy and it falls in a favorable and thriving place, the influence is heavier; if there is no energy and it falls in a place of burial and decline, the influence is lighter; when strong turns to weak, it starts heavy and becomes light; when weak turns to strong, it starts light and becomes heavy. Those who thoroughly explore the subtle aspects of the Book of Changes will naturally align perfectly with the heavenly mechanism.
