Charting guides: Liu Yao Divination Chart, Da Yan Yarrow Stalk Divination

The "Official Ghost" although activated, is broken by the day branch, so even though there is danger, it is not a problem. Once the Official Ghost line is activated, the misfortune has already taken shape; at this point, if the day branch or moving line comes to clash with it, it is called "clashing and dispersing," indicating that although the illness may temporarily show a dangerous sign, it will ultimately not lead to death. If the hostile god is activated and meets a clash, it is also auspicious. Even if there is no clash, as long as the day branch or moving line holds it together or controls it, it also belongs to a situation where danger is apparent but there is actually no harm.

To determine when a sickness will be cured, one should examine the "Children" (子孙), which represents a blessing deity, whether it is active or still; to know when life will end, one should carefully assess the strength and decline of the "Official Ghost" (官鬼), which symbolizes calamity. These two statements are only general guidelines. In actual divination, one should be flexible. For example, if the "Children" are in their season, prosperous and active, then the date of recovery can be directly determined by the day branch (日辰) corresponding to this line. If the "Children" are active but lack strength, then the date should be determined by the month and day when they receive support and become strong. If the "Children" are still and not in their season, relying entirely on other lines for support to form a blessing, then the date should be determined by the line providing that support. Similarly, if the hexagram does not rely on the "Children" for blessing, but instead depends on a particular favorable line to form a good omen, then the date should be determined by that favorable line.

For example, if the hexagram lines are originally dangerous and a killing god or a hostile god arises to harm or control them, but fortunately another line dispels, controls, or combines with it to save the situation, so that the harmful line no longer causes trouble, then the line that controls the harmful killing god should be used to determine the time of the event. If the official ghost and hostile god are activated but lack strength, and there is no one in the hexagram to control them, while the useful god is prosperous and strong without being harmed, then the day when the official ghost is buried or reaches its end should be used to determine the time. If the hostile god does not move at all, the useful god is also not harmed, but the useful god itself is weak and lacks vitality, then the day when the useful god meets a supportive and strong condition should be used to determine the time of death. All other situations should be judged in the same way.

The Golden Strategies, Volume 11: Medicine

If one falls ill but does not seek a doctor, few will survive; if medicine is used but not appropriate for the condition, many will die unjustly. If one wishes to choose a skilled physician from among many, one should first consult a diviner to cast a hexagram, using the imagery of the hexagram to decide. This is the general heading of the "Medicine" section in The Golden Strategies, indicating that this section does not concern the illness itself, but rather the effectiveness of physicians and medicines.

The 'Response' line represents the doctor; if it falls into an empty state, the doctor is idle and not available, and even if invited, he cannot be found. The 'Children' line represents medicine; if it is hidden and not visible, the medicine and the illness are incompatible, and taking it will have no effect. In divination about illness, the 'Children' line is considered as medicine. When specifically divining about medicine, the 'Response' line represents the doctor, and the 'Children' line represents the medicine. For example, when divining about hiring a doctor: if the 'Response' line is empty, the doctor will definitely not come. If the 'Response' line is active and harmonizes with the 'World' line, the doctor will definitely come. If the 'Response' line is active but empty and changes into an empty state, the doctor is away. If the 'Response' line overcomes or conflicts with the 'World' line, it indicates the doctor is unwilling to come. If the divination lacks the 'Children' line, taking medicine will not work. If the 'Children' line is empty, it will also be ineffective.

In the hexagram, if "Official Ghost" moves, it indicates that medication will not show quick results. For divination related to medicine, it is auspicious if "Official Ghost" is quiet and lacks energy. If it moves, it suggests the illness is becoming more severe, and even with excellent doctors and medicines, immediate effectiveness is difficult to achieve. If "Official Ghost" is weak and confined, the situation is somewhat better, but if it is prosperous and strong, the condition is more dangerous. Medication will only be effective when "Official Ghost" enters its tomb or reaches its decline. If one takes medicine forcefully when "Official Ghost" is strong, the illness may worsen.

When "Kongwang" falls on the World Line, seeking medical treatment is merely a superficial effort. If the World Line is in an empty position, the patient will certainly not be committed to seeking medical help. If the emptiness occurs without any cause, then even doctors will not be invited at all. Even if they are forced to invite a doctor, the medicine will not work. If the divination is about taking medicine and the World Line is in an empty position, it indicates that the medicine is not appropriate for the condition.

The official ghost is strong while the children are weak, indicating that the medicine is too light and the illness is too severe. When divining about medicine, if the official ghost lacks strength and the children are prosperous and strong, it suggests that the medicine can effectively suppress the illness and taking it will likely be effective. Conversely, if the children are weak and the official ghost is strong, it means the medicine is insufficient for the severity of the illness, and taking it will certainly not be effective.

The Response Line is weak while the World Line is strong, indicating that the patient's family is wealthy while the doctor's family is poor. When divining about medicine, use 'World' to represent the patient's family and 'Response' to represent the doctor's family: if they mutually generate or harmonize, the doctor and the patient's family are either relatives or friends; if they conflict or control each other, even if they are relatives, they have never had contact. If the Response is strong and the World is weak, it means the patient's family is poor while the doctor's family is wealthy; if the Response is weak and the World is strong, it is the opposite.

The "Parents" should not be on the World Line, and the "Official Ghost" which is a harmful influence should not be on the Hexagram Body. Both the Hexagram Body and the World Line should avoid having the "Parents" and "Official Ghost" lines. The "Parents"restrain the "Children," and the "Official Ghost" is the sickness spirit; once they appear, the medicine will not be effective. If the "Parents" are on the World Line, one may promise to recite scriptures and hold a ritual to pray for protection and appeasement. If the "Official Ghost" is on the World Line, one may pray to the spirits for their protection. First perform these rituals, then taking medicine will be effective.

The Official Ghost moves again and transforms into the Official Ghost again, indicating that the illness must necessarily change repeatedly. When the Official Ghost transforms into another Official Ghost in a divination about medicine, the illness is certainly going to change: either the symptoms vary before and after, or the condition fluctuates between light and severe in an unpredictable manner, making the medicine ineffective.

"Children" moves and transforms into another "Children," indicating a mixture of remedies that are not focused. "Children" is the useful god in divination for medicine, and it is most appropriate to have only one instance of it: it has vitality and is not empty, and is supported by the day branch and the moving line, which is an excellent omen. If the卦 has too many "Children" or if "Children" transforms into another "Children," it indicates that the physician's skills are not refined, and the prescriptions are disorderly and unstructured, thus achieving no results.

The term "children" (子孙) becomes active but transforms into a hostile god, which is like mistakenly taking a deadly poison. Many people doubt the phrase "mistakenly taking medicine" in the "Eye at the Bottom of the Sea," but this statement is very reasonable. Whenever something is activated, there is a change. If "children" becomes active and transforms into "parents," it will turn back to harm it; if it transforms into "wealth," it will support "official ghost"; if it transforms into "siblings," it indicates the medicine is not pure; if it transforms into "official ghost," the medicine actually aggravates the illness; if "children" transforms into "children" again, it means the medicine is too mixed and ineffective. Therefore, it is better for "children" to remain inactive. If the changing line actually harms the world and attacks the useful element, then it will certainly bring about the disaster of causing death through the medicine.

The Response Line is overlaid by the Official Ghost, so one should be cautious about the medicine it prescribes, as it may worsen the illness. When the Response Line is overlaid by the Officialdom, the physician is certainly not skilled. If this physician further harms the Hexagram Body, the World Line, or the main image, one should be careful of incorrect prescriptions that may harm the person. If the Response Line transforms into a Hostile God or the Official Ghost, the medicine should not be taken.

The "Official Ghost" is accompanied by the Day Branch, indicating that this illness is certainly not a long-standing one. If the "Official Ghost" is accompanied by the Day Branch and appears to be active in the hexagram, then it must be a sudden illness that has recently developed. However, if the Day Branch belongs to the "Official Ghost" but the hexagram does not show the "Official" line, then one cannot make such a conclusion. Instead, it can only be said that the illness is currently very severe and that treatment should be postponed until this period has passed.

The Response Line is occupied by the Month Builder, indicating that the person sought is a doctor employed by the government. If the Response Line holds the "Parents," it is likely a monk or Taoist, or someone who also masters other skills. If the Response Line holds "Siblings," it is a mediocre doctor, often demanding payment for medicine in advance. If the Response Line holds "Wealth," it is a doctor from a wealthy family or a female doctor. If the Response Line holds "Children," it is a professional physician, possibly also a monk or Taoist. If the Response Line holds the Grand Age, it is a renowned family of physicians. If the Response Line holds the Day Branch and is afflicted by the Grand Age, it is a newly learned doctor. If the Response Line holds the Month Builder, it is an official doctor, and if it also holds "Children," the treatment is particularly effective. As for the age of the doctor, it can be determined by the Growth, Prosperity, burial, and decline of the line.

The World Line is under the influence of the Official Ghost, so even if the Children line moves and the medicine is very effective, the root of the illness remains. Generally speaking, the moving line and the day branch can generate or overcome the Flying God, but they cannot generate or overcome the Hidden God, because "hidden" means concealed and not revealed. When divining illness and the Official Ghost is hidden beneath the World Line, the illness is certain to have a root that cannot be completely removed; even if the Children line moves, its effect is only temporary. Once the hidden Official Ghost encounters a prosperous and strong month or day, the illness will surely recur.

In a state of decline, the "Official Ghost" sits, and the Hexagram Body joins on top. Although the illness is mild, it cannot be cured by medicine. When the Hexagram Body is associated with the Official Ghost, the illness cannot be摆脱; combined with weakness and lack of energy, it indicates a chronic and unresolved condition. Even if the World Line is prosperous and strong, the person can only remain sick in bed, and even with a good doctor, there is no effect. When the World Line holds the Official Ghost, or when the main image and Hexagram Body are associated with the Official Ghost's tomb, the same interpretation applies.

If the "Parents" are hidden and not visible, the person may be called a doctor but actually does not understand pulse diagnosis. In the hexagram, if there is "Parents," then "Children" cannot hold great power, which is not auspicious. However, the hexagram cannot do without "Parents," but it is better for it to remain still rather than to be active. Why? Because the body's qi and pulse are all governed by the "Parents" line. Therefore, when divining about a medical practitioner, if this line is missing, the person is likely a wandering quack doctor. Though he may also prescribe medicine, he does not understand pulse diagnosis and relies solely on guesswork.

The "Official Ghost" does not appear in the upper trigram; even if medicine is used, the root of the illness cannot be identified. Although the "Official Ghost" is indeed a harmful force, it cannot be absent from the hexagram: only when it appears in the hexagram can the "Children" restrain it and the Day Branch restrain it through punishment, making the medicine effective. If the "Official Ghost" does not appear in the hexagram, the illness remains hidden and unclear, with no knowledge of the cause and no way to determine the symptoms. Randomly administering medicine would naturally fail to produce results.

The main image has already arrived at the "绝" position and is also injured by being attacked, so even if a physician has a reputation, he cannot save the patient. When the main image falls into positions such as weak and confined, 死, 墓, or 绝, and is further attacked by the powerful day branch or moving line, the illness is certainly incurable, and even a good doctor will be ineffective. If the main image moves and transforms into dead, 墓, empty, or 绝 positions, it is treated in the same way.

"When the 'Parents' move and are in their season with strong support, even a master like Bianque would be powerless. Once the 'Parents' move, the 'Children' are restrained, and the medicine will certainly not work. If the 'Children' themselves have strength, and there is either the Day Branch or a moving line that冲 opens or 合 holds the 'Parents', rescuing the 'Children' so they can be used, the patient may still survive, but it will require taking several doses. If the 'Parents' move and transform into 'Children', it indicates that the doctor is acting slowly and inefficiently."

To determine the nature of the medicine based on the Five Phases of the 'Official Ghost' line: if it belongs to fire or earth, then cold and cooling medicines should be used. A fire or earth Official Ghost indicates a heat condition, so cold and cooling medicines are appropriate. If it is a water or metal Official Ghost, the condition is usually cold, so warm and hot medicines should be used. More specifically, a fire Official Ghost requires cold medicines, an earth Official Ghost requires cool medicines, a water Official Ghost requires hot medicines, and a metal Official Ghost requires warm medicines. This approach is appropriate. Further, if a fire Official Ghost is in a flourishing and strong position and receives support, then strong cold medicines must be used. If it is weak or in a dead position, then cool medicines are sufficient. If a water Official Ghost is in a flourishing and strong position and receives assistance, then strong hot medicines are needed. If it is weak or in a dead position, then warm medicines are sufficient. For example, if a fire Official Ghost is in a yin palace or yin line, it indicates a condition of yin deficiency with excessive fire, so a formula to nourish yin and reduce fire should be used. If a water Official Ghost is in a yang palace or inner trigram, it indicates a condition of blood and qi deficiency, so a formula to tonify the middle and invigorate qi should be used. In general, one should adapt according to the changes in the hexagram, and the rest can be inferred in a similar way.

To determine the direction to seek a doctor, refer to the "Fortune Virtue" line. If it falls on "Chou" or "Yin," go to the Northeast. When predicting the effectiveness of medicine, observe which line the "Children" falls on; this indicates the direction of the best doctor. If "Children" falls on "Zi," it is suitable to consult a doctor from the North; if on "Chou," then from the Northeast, and so on. For example, if "Children" is on "Yin" and belongs to the Wood element, the doctor is likely to have a name with a radical related to wood or a grass radical, or be of the Tiger zodiac. Such a person may not be in the Northeast, but still be effective. The same principle applies to other cases.

The "Wealth"爻 belongs to water and is active, so it most strongly avoids fish, shrimp, fresh, and cold foods. The "Wealth"爻 represents food, which is originally used for nourishing the body; but once it becomes active, it goes to assist the "Official Ghost"爻, and thus becomes a harmful thing. If the Wealth爻 also belongs to water, one must avoid eating fish, fresh, and cold foods, and only then can medicine be effective. If the Wealth爻 belongs to wood, one should avoid eating foods that cause wind and irritability; if it belongs to fire, one should avoid eating fried, grilled, and roasted hot foods; if it belongs to metal, one should avoid eating hard and overly salty foods; if it belongs to earth, one should avoid eating oily and greasy foods. If the Wealth爻 is quiet and not moving, one should not casually avoid certain foods. Additionally, one should avoid foods corresponding to the生肖 of the "Official Ghost"爻, such as if the Official Ghost is in "Chou," one should avoid beef; if it is in "You," one should avoid chicken, and so on.

The wood line is supported by the Azure Dragon, which is beneficial for the patient. The Azure Dragon is a deity of joy and happiness, and its presence on the wood line indicates a harmonious relationship with the world line. Wood represents growth and smooth flow, while the Dragon symbolizes joy. Together, they suggest that the patient should let go of domestic worries and keep a relaxed and cheerful mind, which will make the medication more effective.

The "wife's wealth" trigram generates and harmonizes with the useful god and is active in the outer trigram. Using the method of vomiting will lead to recovery. When the wealth trigram is active in the outer trigram, it symbolizes ascending and vomiting; if it also generates and harmonizes with the world line or the useful god, then vomiting medication should be used, and the illness will be cured by vomiting. If the wealth trigram is active in the inner trigram, it symbolizes descending, and the method of疏导 and promoting smooth flow is most effective. Conversely, if the wealth trigram is active but harms the world line and main image, then if it is in the outer trigram, the person will vomit after taking medicine; if it is in the inner trigram, the person will have continuous diarrhea after taking medicine.

The "Children" line belongs to the fire element and resides in the Li trigram, so treating it with moxibustion can cure it. Since "Children" is of the fire element and is located in the fire trigram Li, it is suitable to treat it with warm and hot medicines. If it is located in another trigram and resides in the outer trigram, then moxibustion must be used to heal it. As for when it is located in the inner trigram, or even if it is in the outer trigram but still belongs to its original trigram, the same method applies.

"Children" falling in the Kan trigram require the method of inducing sweating; "Official Ghost" belonging to wood should first disperse wind pathogens. When "Children" is activated in the Kan trigram, regardless of its own Five Phases attributes, it is suitable to use methods of resolving exterior symptoms and inducing sweating; "Official Ghost" belonging to wood, which represents wind, must first eliminate wind pathogens, so that the medication will be effective. This is merely an example; the rest of the combinations between the Five Phases and the Eight Trigrams should be deduced in the same way.

The useful god, if prosperous and strong with support, should not be treated with tonics. If the useful god is in a weak and confined state, or in a buried or dying position, then tonics must be used to see results. However, if the useful god is in its season, prosperous and strong, with support and assistance, then attacking and reducing medicines should be used instead. Using tonics at this time would be harmful.

The "Official Ghost" is weak and belongs to the water element, so it is not advisable to use acupuncture or needles. The "Children" belong to the metal element, which governs blades, so it is appropriate to use blade-like treatments such as needles and stones. If the "Official Ghost" belongs to water, using blades or needles would cause metal to generate water, thereby worsening the condition and making the illness more severe. Additionally, the "earth ghost" should avoid hot medicines, the "water ghost" should avoid cold medicines, the "fire ghost" should avoid wind-dispelling medicines, and the "metal ghost" should avoid pill formulations.

The 'Children' and 'Official Ghost' lines both falling into the void indicate a good omen; the illness will recover on its own without treatment. If both lines are activated simultaneously, one should take medicine internally and perform external rituals to appease spirits. When both lines are in the void during a divination about illness, it is a favorable sign; or if both lines are weak and quiet, without any conflict or conjunction, the illness will naturally heal without the need for medicine. However, if both lines are activated at the same time, it does not mean the medicine is ineffective, but rather that there are supernatural forces interfering. Therefore, medicine alone will not work, and one must take medicine internally while also praying to spirits, in order for the illness to be cured—this is what the common saying 'external repair and internal supplementation' refers to.

When two 'Children' lines are activated in the hexagram, the medicine should be taken with intervals. When two lines of Children are activated at the same time, the effectiveness of the medicine is divided, so it is not necessary to take it continuously one after another. Instead, it is better to take it several times. Alternatively, one can prepare two kinds of decoctions and take them alternately, which may be more effective. If the divination relates to conditions such as abscesses and swellings, it can be said that internal tonifying agents and external poultices should be used together, both internally and externally.

The "Official Ghost" has injured two intermediate lines. When opening the prescription, one should use medicine to widen the chest and relieve the diaphragm. The intermediate lines are located between the World and Response lines, which correspond to the chest and diaphragm area of the human body. When the "Official Ghost" activates and clashes with them, the chest and diaphragm will certainly feel obstructed, requiring medicine to relieve the middle energizer. The "Official Ghost" itself is also activating on the two intermediate lines, and the principle is the same. If the intermediate lines are activated by "Siblings," this indicates an unsmooth qi flow, and the treatment should focus on regulating the qi.

The "Parents" come to generate and harmonize, and then transform into "Children." It would be better to close the door and rest quietly rather than take medicine. In the hexagram, the "Children" line is empty, and the "Official Ghost" line is weak and quiet. If the "Parents" line becomes active and generates and harmonizes with the World Line, the Hexagram Body, or the main image, then there is no need to take medicine. If the "Parents" further transform into "Children," then one should completely abandon family affairs, retreat to the mountains for quiet rest, or go to a temple or monastery to close the door and cultivate, and naturally will recover without taking medicine.

The fifth line moves and transforms into "Fortune Virtue," which suggests one can simply consult a doctor encountered on the way. In the hexagram, "Children" appears but falls empty, while the "Children" generated by the transformation of the fifth line is not empty. Therefore, there is no need to bother selecting a famous physician for medication; instead, a simple healer encountered on the way may be more effective. If "Children" does not appear and no line among the six transforms into "Children," but only the day branch brings "Children" to generate and harmonize with it, then unexpectedly a doctor will come to treat naturally.

The World and Response lines are harmonious in the Five Phases, but the divination lacks the "Fortune Virtue" line. In this case, a different doctor should be sought. When the World and Response lines are harmonious, it means they neither support nor hinder each other. However, if the divination also lacks the "Children" line, then this prescription will neither harm nor benefit, making it useless whether taken or not. Therefore, a different doctor should be consulted for proper treatment to ensure recovery.

The wife's wealth and official ghost both activate while the children fall empty, so taking medicine is just a waste of effort. The wealth爻 moves to support the official ghost, and the official爻 moves to indicate the illness is worsening; with both lines moving, the situation has already become dangerous. The children, which are the relief deity, also fall empty, so taking medicine brings no benefit. Even if there is a good doctor, it will certainly be ineffective. It would be better to stop taking medicine and let it recover naturally over time.

The Golden Strategies · Twelve, Ghosts and Spirits

Appealing to ghosts and deities for blessings is a current popular trend among people; offering prayers to heavenly deities and earth spirits was also a common practice in ancient times. This is the general heading of the "Ghost and Deity" section in The Golden Strategies, explaining that consulting about supernatural causes and performing rituals for appeasement and blessings have examples both in ancient and modern times, and are not mere inventions of common people.

Without using the yao (lines) of the Yi hexagrams to verify and confirm, all the rituals of worship and exorcism would be in vain; to discern what spirit is causing trouble, one should first examine the "Official Ghost" line within the hexagram, which can reveal the origin and nature of the spirit. The "Official Ghost" line is capable of actually bringing misfortune or actual blessings, so by observing it, one can understand the nature of the spirit causing trouble or offering protection.

When a yao is strong and prosperous, it is considered a spirit; when it is weak and confined, it is considered a ghost. The direction from which the ghost comes can be determined by the eight palaces of the Trigrams, such as Qian or Xun. A yao that is yin belongs to a woman, while a yao that is yang belongs to a man. The age of the ghost can also be determined by its strength and weakness. If the yao is strong and prosperous, it is a divine spirit; if it is weak and confined, it is a ghost. A yao that is yang belongs to a man, while a yao that is yin belongs to a woman. If the yao is in the position of "Changsheng" (growth), it represents a young ghost; if it is in the position of "Diwang" (prosperity), it represents a strong ghost; if it is in the position of "Xiao" (decline), it represents an old ghost; if it is in the positions of "Tai" (womb) or "Yang" (nurturing), it represents a child ghost. A ghost in the Qian palace comes from the northwest; a ghost in the Xun palace comes from the southeast.

If "Official Ghost" is in the Qian trigram, it must mean a vow was made to light a heavenly lamp and worship the stars. If it is in the Dui trigram, it is certainly a verbal vow not yet fulfilled, or an offense against the spirit world. If it is in the Kan trigram, it refers to sacred images worshipped in the north. If it is in the Gen trigram, it refers to the city god and the land deity. If it is in the Li trigram, it refers to the deities in the southern temples. If it is in the Kun trigram, it refers to the land deity and the ghosts of ancestral tombs. If it is in the Zhen trigram, it is likely a tree spirit or the ghost of a man who was beaten to death. If it is in the Xun trigram, it must be a woman who died by hanging or from a fit and fall.

Carefully examine the trigrams of the eight palaces, and all kinds of ghosts and spirits will naturally appear. The passage above is based on the eight trigrams: The Qian trigram represents Heaven, and if a ghost is in the Qian palace and belongs to the fire element, it refers to vows such as lighting a sky lamp, and the golden ghost is similar; the wood ghost refers to vows made for flying kites. If a ghost is in the 'Zi' and 'Chou' lines, it refers to vows made to worship the Big Dipper. The Kun trigram represents earth and is yin, so it governs tombs and land spirits; the Gen trigram is also earth but yang, so it governs city guardians and household spirits. The Li trigram is in the south, so it is associated with the deities of southern temples; the Kan trigram is in the north at the Zi position, so it is associated with the sacred images worshipped in the north. The Zhen trigram represents wood, so it governs tree spirits; if it carries the 'Baihu' or 'Zixing' element, it refers to ghosts who died from being beaten to death. The Xun trigram represents ropes, so it governs ghosts who died by hanging; if it does not carry the 'Tengshe' element and is not a criminal line, it refers to ghosts who died from a wind illness. The Dui trigram represents the mouth, so it governs curses and verbal vows; Dui also belongs to the metal element, so it is associated with spirit injuries. The difference lies in this: The Qian trigram has three connected lines, representing complete and unbroken metal; the Dui trigram has the top line broken, representing broken and injured metal, so Dui is taken as spirit injury, but Qian is not taken as spirit injury.

If "Official Ghost" is combined with "Gou Chen," there must be an earth deity interfering. If it is combined with "Vermilion Bird," it indicates being cursed or offended by others. If combined with "White Tiger," it signifies a ghost who died from blood-related injuries. If combined with "Black Tortoise," it indicates a ghost whose cause of death is unknown. If combined with "Azure Dragon," it suggests a promise of good deeds that has not been fulfilled. If combined with "Teng She," it implies offending the deity of offerings. This passage is based on the Six Spirits: "Gou Chen" governs land and property, so when the ghost爻 is combined with it, it indicates interference by an earth deity. "Vermilion Bird" governs speech and disputes, hence the curse or offense. "White Tiger" is associated with blood, so it indicates a ghost who died from violent injuries; if it is in a yang position, it refers to a ghost who died violently. "Black Tortoise" governs darkness and obscurity, hence the unknown cause of death. If it transforms into "Siblings" or comes from "Siblings," it indicates a ghost caused by thieves. "Azure Dragon" is a favorable deity, hence it relates to good wishes. "Teng She" is regarded as the deity of offerings; in modern times, people pray to this deity and offer small snake-shaped dough figures as a thanksgiving, which is said to be very effective.

The "Official Ghost" belonging to the Metal element is the spirit of injury, while that belonging to the Fire element is either the Kitchen God or the wishes of incense and offerings. The "Official Ghost" belonging to the Wood element indicates a ghost bound with shackles and punishment tools, while that belonging to the Water element indicates the river god or river spirit. This passage is based on the Five Phases: the Metal element represents the ghost injured by weapons, and if it is prosperous and strong, it is the actual spirit; if it is weak, it is the subordinate spirits of the injury. The Fire element ghost located in the second line is the Kitchen God, while in other lines it represents the wishes of incense and offerings in other places. If it is in the inner trigram of the same palace, it represents the local land deity and Buddhist or Taoist offerings; if it is in another palace, it represents offerings in other areas. If it is in the sixth line, it represents distant offerings; if it is in the fifth line, it represents vows made on the way; if it is the holder of the line, it represents offerings at the local community shrine. A weak Fire element "午" represents a ghost burned to death. The Wood element "Official Ghost" is a spirit from the East; if it transforms into Metal or is transformed from Metal, it is a ghost bound in shackles; if it is accompanied by "Teng Snake," it is a ghost hanged to death; if it transforms into Wood again and is accompanied by "White Tiger," it is a ghost who died from being crushed. A strong Water element "Official Ghost" represents the river god or river spirit, while a weak one represents a ghost who died by falling into water. If it is in the Zhen or Xun trigrams, or if it is transformed from Wood into Water, it definitely represents a ghost who died by falling into water from a boat.

If the "Official Ghost" falls on a soil line, one should determine which type of soil deity it belongs to. A soil line with the Official Ghost indicates either a yin soil deity or a yang soil deity, depending on whether the line is yin or yang. If the Official Ghost is in the Zhen or Xun trigrams, or arises from a wood line, it should be treated similarly and may represent a harmful soil spirit beneath tree roots. If the Official Ghost is on the response line and conflicts with the world line, or if the day branch carries the Official Ghost to conflict or overcome it, then it is an external flying soil spirit. If the day builder, month builder, moving line, and changing line all involve soil, then it indicates that the five directions' soil deities are all active.

The activation of the "Official Ghost" (官鬼)Storage indicates underground corpses causing trouble; the activation of the "Wealth" (妻财)库地 signifies that the gods stored within the home are restless. For example, if the "Official Ghost" line belongs to metal, the burial place of metal is in Chou (丑), and if the Chou line is activated in the hexagram, it is considered the ghost's burial place. Similarly, if the "Wealth" line belongs to wood, the storage place of wood is in Wei (未), and if the Wei line is activated in the hexagram, it is considered the wealth's storage place. The other five elements follow the same pattern. These two matters have already been discussed in the chapter on "Home and Residence" (家宅), so they will not be elaborated here again. However, the important point is that as long as it does not harm the World Line (世爻), it will not become a disaster.

When construction or breaking ground causes supernatural disturbances, it is definitely due to aInauspicious Sha (kill) encountering 「Gou Chen」. When disputes arise from verbal conflicts, it is because the earth line meets 「Zhu Que」. This still refers to the earth ghost. When the earth ghost combines with 「Gou Chen」, it is definitely because of construction or breaking ground that causes domestic unrest. According to the line positions: the first line indicates digging a well or breaking ground, the second line indicates building a stove, the third and fourth lines indicate breaking ground at the main entrance, the fifth line indicates breaking ground by the roadside, and the sixth line indicates breaking ground under the fence. According to the trigram groups: the Dui trigram group indicates digging a pond, the Gen trigram group indicates building a wall, the Kun trigram group indicates building a tomb, and the Kan trigram group combined with 「Xuan Wu」 indicates digging a pit for a toilet. If any of these situations meet 「Zhu Que」, it means that during the act of breaking ground, someone was secretly cursing or speaking ill behind the scenes, or the person themselves spoke too much and caused trouble, thus inviting misfortune.

The first line is a water yao and meets the 'Official Ghost,' which is an offense to the well spirit. The second line is a fire yao and meets the 'Official Ghost,' which is an offense to the Kitchen God. If the 'Official Ghost' falls on the third line's position, it is an offense to the family shrine's attendants. If it falls on the position of the road, one should pray to the five road deities. The ghost in the fourth line conflicts with the world line, indicating encountering evil spirits while traveling outside. The ghost in the sixth line combines with the month builder, meaning a deity from afar is involved. This passage is based on the six lines' positions: a water ghost in the first line indicates the well spirit is disturbed; a fire ghost in the second line indicates the Kitchen God is offended. The third line is a gate, and if the 'Official Ghost' is here, it is an offense to the family shrine's offerings. The fourth line is the door, and if the official yao overcomes and conflicts with the world line, it indicates encountering ghosts while traveling outside. A metal ghost on the fifth line is the five road deities, a fire ghost is the five saints, a wood ghost is the five young gods, and a water ghost is the five road deities. If weak and powerless, it is just a wild ghost by the roadside. A ghost in the sixth line is definitely a distant ghost; if it receives support and harmony from the month builder and day branch, it is a heavenly deity that once received a vow.

If the "Official Ghost" (官鬼) comes to克 (conquer) the Hexagram Body (卦身), it represents a past-life enemy or creditor; if the Hexagram Body goes on to克 (conquer) the "Official Ghost," it represents female ghosts such as wives or concubines. If the Hexagram Body goes on to生 (generate) the "Official Ghost," it represents ghosts of young children or monks and Taoists; if the "Official Ghost" comes to生 (generate) the Hexagram Body, it represents ghosts of ancestors, elders, or parents. If neither side generates or harmonizes with the other, it must be the ghosts of brothers and friends. This passage is based on the relationship between the Hexagram Body and the "Official Ghost": if the "Official Ghost" generates the Hexagram Body, it is considered as "Parents"; if the Hexagram Body generates the "Official Ghost," it is considered as "Children." If the "Official Ghost" conquers the Hexagram Body, it is an enemy or creditor; if the Hexagram Body conquers the "Official Ghost," it is a wife or concubine. If both sides are in harmony according to the Five Phases (五行), it is the ghosts of brothers and friends; if it is a yin line, it is the ghosts of sisters-in-law or female siblings. If it is classified as "Children," it represents ghosts of young children or younger generations; if it is classified as "Parents," it represents ghosts of elders or ancestors; if it is classified as "Wealth," it represents ghosts of wives or women. Among these, the case where the "Official Ghost" conquers the Hexagram Body is the ghost of an enemy or creditor, which is the most difficult to appease, expel, or send away, and the illness is also hard to heal.

The "Official Ghost" trigram accompanied by a penal trigram indicates a ghost who died an unnatural death. Any ghost trigram accompanied by a penal trigram definitely does not die of natural causes: if it is in "Chen," the ghost died crushed by a collapsing wall; if it is in "Wu," the ghost died burned by boiling water or intense fire; if it is in "You," the ghost died wounded by knives, swords, or arrows; if it is in "Hai," the ghost died by drowning in a river or falling into water. If it is in "Yin," the ghost may have been bitten by a tiger; if it is in "Si," the ghost may have been bitten by a snake; if it is in "Xu," the ghost may have been bitten by a dog; if it is in "Chou," the ghost may have been gored by a bull. However, if this penal trigram accompanied ghost is instead prosperous and strong, it is not considered a malevolent ghost, but rather a divine being, such as the spirit of a powerful general like Marquis Liu.

The "Official Ghost" falling on the "Absolute" position indicates a lonely ghost that is not worshipped. If the ghost line does not appear in the upper trigram, one should look at which line it is hidden under to determine what kind of ghost is causing trouble: if it is hidden under "Parents," it is an ancestor from the family; if it is hidden under "Children," it is a young relative. If it is hidden under an empty line, it is a ghost without any caretaker, that is, a wandering spirit; if it falls on the "Absolute" line, it is a ghost that has cut off the family lineage and is not worshipped.

If "Official Ghost" appears on the day branch or the month builder, it is definitely the soul of someone who died recently causing trouble. If the卦 does not contain "Official Ghost," but the day branch is exactly "Official Ghost," then it must be the soul of a recently deceased person causing trouble. If the day branch is "Ghost" and there is also a "Ghost" line in the卦, it is because they went to pray and recently made a vow that has not yet been fulfilled.

The "Official Ghost" entering its墓 (burial place) and being accompanied by a刑 (punishment) indicates that the spirit is certainly a prisoner who died in prison. For example, if on the day of "Wei" one draws a yao (line) of "Official Ghost" in the wood element, since the burial place of wood is "Wei," this is called the ghost entering its burial place, which means it is definitely the spirit of a prisoner who died in prison. If there is also a刑爻 (punishment line), then it indicates death by misfortune or death between tombs. Conversely, if this "Official Ghost" yao is prosperous and strong and becomes active, it is not the spirit of a prisoner, but rather the spirit of a deity in a temple.

The "Wealth" line next to it comes to join the ghost, indicating a ghost of a secret lover meeting at the moon; the "World Line" line with "Siblings" comes to generate the ghost, indicating a ghost of a friend from the temple community. If the Wealth line moves to join the ghost line, or if Wealth transforms into Ghost or Ghost transforms into Wealth, they mutually join each other, then the spirit causing trouble must be someone who had a secret relationship with the patient. If the Wealth line is overcome by the World Line and carries "Black Tortoise," then it is the ghost of someone who died due to a romantic affair. Other situations should be interpreted in the same way.

The ghost爻 moves and transforms into "Official Ghost" again, with "Black Tortoise" attached, indicating a ghost of a thief who can climb walls and break through barriers. If it transforms into "Parents" and meets "Tang She," it signifies a spirit that causes nightmares and bewitches. Whenever a ghost爻 moves and transforms into one of the six relations, we judge based on the one it transforms into: if it transforms into "Siblings," it refers to friends, brothers, sisters-in-law, or grandparents; if it transforms into "Official Ghost" with "Black Tortoise," it definitely indicates a thief; if it transforms into "Parents," it refers to uncles and aunts among the six relations, and if "Tang She" is also present, it means that a craftsman in the family has performed a nightmare spell, causing the household to be unsettled. Even if "Parents" move and transform into "Official Ghost" without "Tang She," it still indicates that a craftsman has been involved in deceitful activities.

The heavenly stem is overlying "Official Ghost," which represents an old family tradition and a wish passed down from ancestors; the day branch is also accompanied by "Official Ghost," which signifies a vow made verbally in the past. If both the heavenly stem and the day branch carry "Ghost," it indicates that one is currently promising to fulfill the old family tradition, but the matter has not yet been completed.

If the ghost爻 holds the world line, it indicates an old debt that has not been repaid. If the ghost爻 is hidden and not visible, it means that originally there was only a verbal promise without sincere intention. If the ghost爻 transforms into the wife's wealth, it suggests that a vow was made during a period of fasting and purification but was not completed. If the transformed wealth falls into the empty state, it means that although a vow was made, there was no restraint on diet, resulting in an incomplete and unfinished matter. The ghost爻 holding the world line does not necessarily indicate an inherited tradition, but rather a previous verbal promise made by oneself that was never fulfilled. If there is no ghost爻 in the hexagram, but the world line is covered by the ghost of its own palace, it is also an old debt, though originally it was just a casual remark, later forgotten, thus leading to punishment. If the ghost爻 transforms into the wife's wealth, it indicates that the period of fasting and purification was not completed, or that there was a violation of the vows in the middle of the process. If the transformed wealth falls into the empty state, it means that although a vow was made, there was no dietary restraint, resulting in an incomplete and unfinished matter.

The "Official Ghost" falling on the dwelling line indicates that the residence will not be peaceful; if the "Official Ghost" is on the response line, the direction of the house will be unfavorable. The second line of the inner trigram is the dwelling line. If a moving "Official Ghost" line is on top of it, the house will be restless and family members often fall ill. If the line that conflicts and controls the dwelling line has a ghost, or if the response line has a ghost, then the direction of the house is unfavorable and should be changed.

In the Dui hexagram, the metal line accompanied by the Azure Dragon is violating a vow made before a Buddha image. Dui is the hexagram of the West, and the Buddha is also referred to as the Golden Body. Therefore, encountering the metal ghost in the Dui palace indicates that a good vow was made before a deity or Buddha. If it is accompanied by the Azure Dragon and Gou Chen, it signifies a vow to cast a golden statue. If accompanied by the Tang Sha, it indicates a vow to paint an image. If it transforms into the Parents, it means a vow to copy or sketch the image, or otherwise a vow to transcribe scriptures. If it transforms into the Wealth or Children, it indicates a vow to build or repair a house.
