His given name was You; he was a grandson of Emperor Yang and the son of Crown Prince Yuande, Yang Zhao. In the eleventh month the Duke of Tang entered the capital and set him up as emperor, changing the reign title to Yining.

Regarding Bodhidharma's coming to China, the Record of the Orthodox Lineage is now taken as the standard, based on the Continued Record of the Dharma by the Liang monk Baochang. Formerly Narendrayasas and Wan Tianyi translated the accounts of the transmission of the Dharma from the Seven Buddhas to the twenty-eight patriarchs. Emperor Jianwen of Liang, because his envoy Liu Xuanyun went to Northern Qi and brought back this book, issued an edict having Baochang incorporate it into the Continued Record of the Dharma.
