The Fifteenth Patriarch, Kanadeva, was a native of South India. His surname was Visara. At first he sought meritorious karma and was also fond of debate. Later he went to call on the Great Being Nagarjuna, and as he was about to reach the gate, Nagarjuna, knowing he was a wise man, first had an attendant place a bowl brimful of water before his seat. The Venerable One saw it, dropped a needle into it, and then went in, and they were delightfully in accord. Nagarjuna then taught him the Dharma without rising from his seat, manifesting a moon-disc form, so that only the voice was heard and no form was seen. The Venerable One said to the assembly: This auspicious sign is the master manifesting Buddha-nature, to show that preaching the Dharma is not sound or form. After obtaining the Dharma, the Venerable One went to the country of Vira. There was an elder named Brahmajingde (Pure Virtue of Brahma). One day large ears grew on a tree in his garden like fungus, with a very fine taste. Only the elder and his second son Rahulata could pick and eat them. When they were picked they grew again; when eaten up they grew once more. The other relatives could not see them. At that time the Venerable One knew their former causes and went to the house. The elder asked the reason. The Venerable One said: Your family once made offerings to a bhiksu, but that bhiksu's eye of the Way was not yet clear, and because he accepted offerings of faith in vain, he was repaid with a body as a wood fungus. Only you and your son (the Zhengzong Ji says the second son) made offerings with sincerity, and so you could eat it, but the others could not. He asked again: How old are you, elder? He answered: Seventy-nine. The Venerable One then spoke a verse:
