Important methods of divination used in various regions of China

Republican era (民國) · Chen Gongdu (陳公篤) · Volume 15 / 21

Chen Gongdu said: terrain is one of the main aspects of physiognomy, because the mountains and waters and climate of a region give rise to the physical form and temperament of the people living there. Ancient people only roughly divided the world into south and north, and their descriptions were very general and not detailed. In fact, there are three main principles: in areas where there are many mountains and little water, the emphasis in physiognomy should be placed on the proportion of the shape and bone quality; in areas where there is much water and few mountains, the emphasis should be placed on the proportion of spirit and vitality; and in areas where mountains and waters are evenly balanced, the emphasis should be placed on the proportion of voice and color. The following is a specific record of these points.

First, people from the south. By "south people," we mean the general term for those living south of the Yangtze River. In face reading, the "Southern Mountain" (the forehead) is considered the most important part. Moreover, those with a solid and thick facial structure are actually of noble destiny. This is because the south has more water and fewer mountains, so many people there are delicate and refined, while those with a thick and solid appearance are rare, hence more valuable. The forehead is called the "Southern Mountain" because in the hexagram it corresponds to the "Fire" trigram, symbolizing the upward rising nature of fire. Those whose foreheads are square and raised, round and prominent, with the "Jade Pillar" (the bone running straight from the root of the nose to the forehead) standing upright, and the "Golden City" (the area below the hairline) level and broad, are destined for great wealth and rank, possessing the qualifications of a national leader. Even if other parts are lacking or sunken, they can still achieve great accomplishments and gain fame earlier—because in the south, the forehead carries the most weight in determining one's destiny.

Second, people from the north. By "north people" is meant the general term for those living north of the Yellow River. In physiognomy, the "earth pavilion" (chin) and "water star" (mouth) are considered the most important features on the face in terms of terrain; and those with a clear and refined appearance are actually of noble destiny. This is because the north has many mountains and little water, so the local people tend to be thick and coarse, while the refined and elegant are less common. The chin is called the "earth pavilion," also known as the "north mountain," and in the hexagram it belongs to the Kan trigram, which symbolizes water, taking the meaning of water's tendency to sink. Those whose chins are prominent and upward-facing, with a swallow-like lower jaw and cheeks like a fortress, are destined for great wealth and can hold the power to control the safety of the whole country. The next best type is when the cheeks are square and prominent like horns, and the mouth is square and angular with an upward tilt, which is also a noble destiny. Even if other parts are lacking or recessed, they can still achieve great things, though their success will come later—because in the north, the chin is given the highest weight.

Third, the central type. The term 'central' refers to the general area north of the Yangtze River and south of the Yellow River. In facial analysis, the 'central mountain' (nose) and the two cheekbones are considered the most important parts in terms of terrain. If the root of the nose rises straight upward forming a jade pillar, the nose head is evenly proportioned and smooth, the nose shape resembles a tiger, and the two cheekbones rise prominently like fortified walls, with the nose and the two cheekbones all rising together with a strong presence, then this is considered an upper-class noble destiny with special privileges, capable of achieving great fame and success. Even if other parts are insufficient or recessed, they can still become successful and achieve fame and accomplishments. This type of person has auspicious fortune in middle age and old age—because in the central type, the nose and the two cheekbones carry the most weight.

Fourth, Shandong. Shandong was formerly known as Lu Province, named because it lies to the east of Mount Tai. In facial analysis, the high and prominent root of the nose, extending upward to the forehead, and the middle section of the nose bridge (the area between the eyebrows) being raised with a bone structure are the most important features in terms of terrain. (The original text says 'you ran' which should be 'you liang'.) This region is an area of strong yang energy, situated by mountains and the sea, with a terrain that is enclosed and sheltered. Therefore, if the root of the nose is high and extends upward to the forehead, it indicates a middle-ranking noble destiny. If it continues upward to the top of the head, reaching the Hundred Convergences point and forming a jade pillar, it indicates an upper-ranking noble destiny. If, in addition, the middle section of the nose bridge has a strong bone structure, appearing robust and powerful, like a rolled bamboo tube, then it signifies great nobility, with medium to high intelligence and the ability to set far-reaching ambitions. If there is also a hidden rhinoceros bone rising up and the cheeks are prominent, then such a person is qualified to be a leader, and the next level can achieve a lasting legacy, while the lowest level can still attain the position of general or minister, holding the country's security in their hands. Such people are strong and resolute, combining wisdom and courage. Conversely, if the root of the nose is not high, the nose bridge lacks bone structure, the hidden rhinoceros bone is not prominent, and the jade pillar is not formed, then it is a common destiny. Even if other parts of the face are peculiar, they can only be of medium or lower rank. Because the local soil of Shandong particularly emphasizes the jade pillar of the root of the nose and the rolled bamboo tube of the nose bridge, these two areas account for the most points.

Fifth, Henan. Henan was anciently known as the Yu Province, also called the Central Plains, located at the center of China, named so because it lies south of the Yellow River. In physiognomy, the forehead and nose are the most important parts in terms of terrain. Henan corresponds to the heavenly heart above and the earthly marrow below, with Mount Song, the central of the Five Mountains, located here. Therefore, a forehead that is square and full, and wide and long horizontally, is considered a noble appearance. If the nose head is round and prominent, and the nostrils are evenly matched, and the nose shape is either like a garlic bulb or like a cut bamboo tube, then this is an excellent noble appearance. If the nose is long and straight, with the nose tip and the 'Lantai' and 'Tingwei' (the sides of the nose) round and smooth like pearls, merging into one and without clear boundaries, this is called a 'Tiger Shape' nose, indicating great fortune and the ability to accomplish extraordinary deeds. If the voice is clear and long, then one can take charge of the safety of the entire country, possessing the qualities of a leader. Conversely, if the root of the nose is low and thin, and the nose tip is sharp and small, even if other parts are peculiar, it is only considered middle or lower class noble appearance—because in Henan, the nose accounts for the largest portion of the score.

Sixth, Shanxi. Shanxi was formerly known as the Jin Province, named because it lies to the west of the Taihang Mountains (the original text says 'west of Mount Tai,' which should be a mistake for 'Taihang Mountains'). In assessing the terrain, the 'sun angle' and 'moon angle' (the areas on either side of the forehead), 'auxiliary angle bone,' and 'border city' are the most important parts. This region spans across key passes of the Great Wall, with its back resting against the waist of the Taihang Mountains, and the auxiliary angle bone closely adjacent to the border city, which is the key area of the border region. Those with a high and prominent auxiliary angle bone in Shanxi are of medium noble rank; if they also have the sun and moon angles high and prominent, they are of great noble rank, capable of controlling the safety of the whole country; if other parts are also peculiar and extraordinary, it is the imperial pattern, and the next level is the pattern of establishing a kingdom. Conversely, if the sun and moon angles are not high and prominent, and the auxiliary angle bone is not prominent, even if other parts are peculiar, they would only be of medium or lower rank, with ordinary achievements—because the sun and moon angles and the auxiliary angle bone correspond to the terrain of Shanxi, and if these areas are well developed, it is easy to achieve success. Seventh, Anhui. Anhui was formerly known as the Wan Province, located near the Yangtze River, with many lakes and swamps, and the mountains and waters nurture a clear and refined atmosphere, with many places that are endowed with talent and beauty. From historical records, this region has produced many great figures, including emperors, marquises, generals, and ministers. The text here abruptly ends in the original, with the characters after 'Wen' missing, likely due to a break in the manuscript, and thus I dare not make up the missing parts.

Part Two, Volume Eight of Gongdu's Methods of Physiognomy

Newly Revised Essential Qi and Color General Diagram

Chen Gongdu said: The complete map of the color and appearance areas, as established by ancient methods, is set at three hundred and sixty-five parts, taking the meaning of the three hundred and sixty-five degrees of the celestial circle. The various books on divination mention only the "Thirteen Major Areas Map," but they do not explain the times when these areas are effective, nor do they discuss what each area governs. The original text mistakenly writes "末" instead of "未." According to my research, this map originated during the Western and Eastern Zhou periods, and was not the original map established by Fenghou, a minister of the Yellow Emperor. The map contains many unnecessary and irrelevant areas, and later people added many interpretations, clinging to the words, turning living principles into fixed ones, making people confused. In reality, it is not effective. Now I have specially revised it, leaving only forty-five important areas, each of which has significant relevance. Note: The names of the color and appearance areas are different from the names of the annual "limit" areas, because each governs different matters. Below, I will classify and explain them one by one, which is convenient for memorization and understanding, making the predictions more reliable.

Chapter One: The Theory of Qi and Color

Chen Gongdu said: In the ancient methods, the positions for observing the color and aura are numerous and complicated, with many names, yet the actual locations they refer to are not clear. Various schools of face reading point randomly and speak without consensus, each holding their own views, causing readers to become tired and disinterested. Since there is no definite standard and no way to verify or examine them, I now specially draw a diagram to clearly define the important positions, specify their exact locations, and explain which types of good or bad fortune each position governs. This makes it easier for readers to remember (the original text says 'ji yi' which should be 'ji ji' meaning 'memory') and understand the importance of each position, distinguishing clearly between good and bad fortune.

The concept of "qi" refers to the initial signs or omens originating from the Earlier Heaven, which do not depend on the five viscera and six腑, nor do they have a fixed location. "Color," on the other hand, refers to the manifestations appearing in the Later Heaven, which change according to the Five Phases and the four seasons, aligning with the heavenly way. Qi resides within the skin, serving as a premonition before an event occurs, usually appearing thirty days before the event, corresponding to the climatic patterns of two solar terms. For significant matters, it may appear as early as one hundred and eighty days beforehand, aligning with the annual cycle of yin and yang. Color appears on the surface of the skin, indicating the impending realization of an event, typically manifesting fifteen days before the event, corresponding to the climatic patterns of one solar term. For significant matters, it may appear as early as ninety days beforehand, aligning with the half-year cycle of yin and yang. These two phenomena are like frost on snow and ice on water, generally similar in appearance but fundamentally different. If not carefully examined, one may make a slight error that leads to a great mistake, resulting in unreliable predictions.

To determine this, first distinguish between the substantial and the insubstantial, then between the clear and the turbid. Next, examine its length and size, its concentration and dilution, its weight and lightness, and finally its dryness or moistness. Also, determine whether it is in harmony or conflict with the seasonal influences, whether it is mutually generating or controlling. Then, based on the Five Phases and the four seasons, judge whether it brings good or bad fortune, success or failure, and whether the outcome will be timely or delayed. In this process, there are two situations: one is "having qi but no color," which means the seeds of good or bad fortune have already been planted but are still dormant and the time has not yet arrived (the character "mo" in "mo zhi" is a mistake for "wei," meaning "not yet"). In this case, observe changes in other areas to determine whether the matter will ultimately succeed or be obstructed. The other is "having color but no qi," which is a superficial indication, and the matter may still change. In this case, observe the transformation in other areas to determine whether it is only a temporary phenomenon or a transition. If both qi and color are present, then the conclusion is definite, and the timing of the outcome can be specified.

Therefore, if the color is full and abundant, the matter will surely come to pass quickly; if it is stagnant and not bright, the matter will surely come to pass slowly; if the color is long and deep, the matter involved is large; if it is short and faint, the matter involved is small. For the color indicating decline, there is a type that takes nine years to dissipate completely, as well as types that take seven, five, or three years, with the shortest taking only one year. For the color indicating decline, there is a type that takes a full year to dissipate completely, as well as types that take a season or a month, with the shortest taking only half a month. For the color indicating prosperity, there is a type that lasts for five years without change, as well as types that last for three or two years, with the shortest taking only one year. For the color indicating prosperity, there is a type that lasts for a full year without change, as well as types that last for a season or a month, with the shortest taking only fifteen days. This is the fixed measure of the timing of color changes.

As for the various forms of the qi color appearing, some resemble millet or beans, some like silk or hair, some are fine as rice particles, some round like pearls, some square like seals, some long and thin like needles, some like floating clouds or flying birds, and some like the winding spread of evening clouds. In general, one must observe which part of the body it appears on, as it relates to a particular matter, and what color it is, as it relates to a particular fortune or misfortune. When making a judgment, one must consider the generation, restriction, overcoming, and transformation according to the current season, as well as the duration and intensity of the qi color's appearance and disappearance, in order to reach an accurate conclusion.

Chapter Two: Methods of Recognizing Qi and Color

There are three types of green. The first type, "green," belongs to the Wood element in the Five Phases, corresponds to the Zhen trigram, and is associated with the Shang tone in the Five Sounds, as well as the Spring season. It represents the initial rising of the energies of heaven and earth. Therefore, the true color of green is bright, moist, and vibrant with life. The second type, "slippery color," is a variation of green: it has a yellowish tinge, with green and yellow mixed together to form a single color, which is called slippery color. The third type, "greasy color," is also a variation of green: it is a pale green with a surface that appears glossy, like a layer of lard; another type that combines green and white is also classified as greasy color.

There are five kinds of red. The first is 'red' (hong): it belongs to the Five Phases' fire, corresponds to the trigram Li (Fire), and in the five tones corresponds to Zheng. It represents the image of attachment and brightness. In the seasons, it corresponds to summer, which is the stage when the vital energy of heaven and earth reaches its peak. Red that is vivid and moist is its true color, and this is called red. The second is 'purple' (zi): it is a variant of red, very pale red, like light purple snowflakes or thin colored clouds. Purple with a luster is called purple. The third is 'dry color' (zao): another variant of red, less than true red but more than purple, red and pale, appearing on the surface, is called dry color. The fourth is 'crimson' (chi): another variant of red, deep red and stagnant, red with a hint of black, forming a single color, like the color of pig liver, is called crimson. The fifth is 'vermilion' (jiang): another variant of red, with a layer of pinkish sheen, like oil or fat, the color gathers together and appears on the surface, is called vermilion.

There are two types of yellow. The first type, 'yellow,' belongs to the Five Phases' Earth, in the trigrams it corresponds to Kun, in the five tones it corresponds to Palace, and in the seasonal months it corresponds to the fourth months of spring, summer, autumn, and winter (the example given in the original text is 'the third, sixth, ninth, and twelfth months'). This is the time when the vital energy of heaven and earth is half rising and half sinking, which corresponds to the four corner positions of the Earthly Branches: Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei. Yellow that is bright, moist, and lustrous is the true color of yellow. The second type, 'dusky color,' is a variation of yellow: it is yellow mixed with black, stagnant and dull, like it has been stained with oil and grime. It is called dusky color, or dark color. There are also two types of white. The first type, 'white,' belongs to the Five Phases' Metal, in the trigrams it corresponds to Dui, in the five tones it corresponds to Shang, and in the seasonal months it corresponds to autumn, which is the stage when the vital energy of heaven and earth begins to descend. White that is clear, bright, and pure is the true color of white. The second type, 'gloomy color,' is a variation of white: it is white that is stagnant and dull, like it has been soaked in water, with a white inner layer and a greasy outer layer, combining into one color. It is called gloomy color, or withered color, meaning white like a withered bone.

There are two types of black. The first type, "black," belongs to the Five Phases as water, corresponds to the trigram Kan (Water) in the hexagrams, and is associated with the fifth tone Yu in the Five Sounds. It corresponds to the season of winter, representing the deepest stage of the convergence of heavenly and earthly energies. Black that is bright and moist, resembling the feathers of a crow, is considered true black. The second type, "dusky color," is a variant of black. It appears dark and heavy, like damp earth, and resembles gloom. The difference lies in that gloom is slightly lighter and more moist, while dusky color is slightly darker and heavier. There is also a kind that resembles thin silk dyed in black, which is also classified as dusky color, or "stagnant color," appearing as if covered with a layer of dust.

Chen Gongdu said: Summing up the above, there are a total of fourteen colors. Among them, the five red shades are the most difficult to distinguish, as they are classified solely by their depth, concentration, and brightness. Anyone who learns to observe faces should first be able to clearly distinguish these five red shades, after which the rest of the colors will be easy to recognize. The next most difficult are the three shades of blue, which are the first major challenge for beginners. As for yellow, white, and black, they are all considered standard if they are bright, moist, and show vitality, while those that are stagnant, dark, and lack vitality are considered variants. The method of identification is fixed and should not be vague or ambiguous; one must not go beyond this scope to guess incorrectly. Following the above classification of fourteen colors is the proper and regulated way to observe.

Chapter Three: Determining Annotations Based on Floating and Sinking

Chen Gongdu said: Previously, the colors were divided into fourteen types, which is the general outline; in addition, there are three more, namely "floating color," "submerged color," and "fixed color." These three colors are actually further distinctions of the previous ones, leading to more variations: each of the fourteen colors is paired with the three states of floating, submerged, and fixed, resulting in forty-two types of colors. Although it seems complicated, there is a simple method for identifying them, generally based on the following three criteria.

The first type is called "floating color." Floating refers to a color that appears on the surface of the skin, oily and shiny, like it has been coated with grease; each of the fourteen colors can appear in this floating form. The matters associated with floating color are similar to those mentioned earlier as "having color but no energy," representing only a superficial appearance of things, with further changes to come. Often, such situations are connected from one aspect to another. If a particular area shows a floating color, even if one's plans are very certain and one's fame and fortune seem very secure, it will ultimately be affected by the situation and changes in people's affairs, leading to failure. Conversely, if there is danger or fear in a certain area, the appearance of a floating color can resolve the situation, either directly saving it or indirectly leading to rescue by others. As for legal disputes, quarrels, crying, or losses, the appearance of a floating color does not cause major harm and can even turn things around. Therefore, there are floating colors such as green, oily, slippery, yellow, and dark. The other colors, red, white, black, and obscure (the original text mistakenly writes "red and white" instead of "red and black"), each also have their own floating colors. The method of identification is simply based on distance: if the color is visible from a distance but not when you get close, it is generally considered a floating color. Therefore, among the fourteen types of color, there are also fourteen types of floating color.

The second type is "Chen Se" or "Dense Color."the so-called "Chen" means the color is hidden within the skin, stagnant and lacking luster, dim and unclear. Each of the fourteen colors can appear in a dense form. The matters associated with this color are similar to those mentioned earlier under "You Qi Wu Se" or "Having Qi but No Color," which indicate that things are being delayed or obstructed. Although the matter itself may have the potential to succeed, there are disputes or hindrances in the process, or changes in human affairs, or shifts in the weather, or local calamities. In short, it is an unexpected obstacle that causes the matter to be halted halfway. This falls under examples of "planting the cause" or "still in transition": wanting to move quickly results in slowness, and wanting to advance leads to fruitless effort. Matters concerning official positions, salaries, and sources of wealth remain unconfirmed for a long time. Actions and agreements also fail to be realized. As for related lawsuits and losses from verbal disputes, they are all vague and indistinct. Therefore, there are red dense color, crimson dense color, dry dense color, deep red dense color, and purple dense color. The other colors, such as green, yellow, white, and black, also each have their own dense colors. The method of identification is simply based on distance: the color is not visible from afar, but appears when viewed closely. Therefore, all fourteen colors have their dense forms. In summary, dense color signifies "delay" and "stagnation": whenever dense color is observed, one should proceed cautiously and avoid haste, as greater urgency only increases stagnation. This is the key principle in interpreting dense color.

The third type is called "fixed color." By "fixed," it means a color that is definite and unchanging, consistent both inside and out, clearly visible and easy to recognize; each of the fourteen colors can appear in a fixed state. The matters it indicates are like the "having qi and color" mentioned earlier, serving as clear omens of things that will certainly happen, allowing for definite conclusions to be drawn. Therefore, whenever a fixed color is observed, the matters being considered will surely be carried out openly and successfully, achieving their goals, and even bringing unexpected benefits, all smoothly obtained without needing additional efforts or procedures. As for the ominous aspects—dangerous colors, thrilling colors, colors indicating shock and loss, colors indicating imprisonment and legal troubles, colors indicating mourning and punishment, colors indicating financial loss and restrictions, and colors indicating being burdened by disputes—all are judged based on this fixed color. Therefore, there are fixed colors such as white, dark, black, and withered colors, and the other colors—green, yellow, red, and slippery—also have their fixed forms. The method of identifying fixed colors remains the same whether viewed from a distance or up close: if the color is present both from afar and when approached, it is called a fixed color. Therefore, among the above fourteen qi colors, there are also fourteen fixed colors. In summary, fixed color is characterized by the word "accuracy": whether auspicious or ominous, it will manifest as it appears and fulfill its meaning on time, being the most reliable of the three types of colors—floating, sinking, and fixed—when making judgments.

Chapter Four: The Relationship Between Qi and Color

Chen Gongdu said: The appearance of color and aura is the manifestation of the earlier heaven's original motivation, and also the external expression of events. Whenever a certain color and aura appears, there must be a corresponding actual event to confirm it. Each kind of color and aura has its main corresponding matter, as well as secondary, connected, and related layers of relationships. In addition, one must also consider the person himself: his status high or low, his wealth level, his intelligence whether wise or foolish, his nature whether strong or gentle, his conduct whether upright or corrupt, his decision-making whether cautious or adventurous, his environment whether stable or oppressive, and his capacity whether broad or narrow. The same color and aura appearing on different people will result in completely different outcomes—this is the crucial point of physiognomy. Below is a detailed classification and explanation.

First, yellow is the most auspicious color, indicating joyful events such as officials being promoted and receiving rewards, achieving meritorious deeds and gaining wealth, having a son or daughter, or receiving good news; for ordinary people, it signifies acquiring land and property, opening up sources of wealth, increasing family members, receiving good news, getting married, or hearing favorable messages from afar. Second, purple is also the most auspicious color, indicating joyful events and being favorable throughout all four seasons: officials being promoted and receiving rewards, achieving meritorious deeds and gaining wealth, and adding family members at home; for ordinary people, it signifies acquiring land and property, gaining power and benefits, having children, and receiving good news from afar.

Third, the color green, belongs to the category of ordinary minor misfortune. In spring, when it is the prevailing season, it is not to be avoided, and if the green is bright and lustrous, it still indicates safety; however, if it appears in other seasons, it signifies prolonged illness, being hindered in all affairs, experiencing minor troubles and much worry, often being startled by false alarms and having many things to be concerned about and delayed. Fourth, the color white, with a clear and pure hue, is considered auspicious. In autumn, when it is the prevailing season, it is not to be avoided, and still indicates safety; however, if it appears in other seasons, it signifies mourning and crying, worry and hidden troubles, persistent illness, uncertainty and anxiety, and failure in all matters, as well as injury to close family members.

Fifth, dry colors indicate minor losses. In summer, when it is the prevailing season, there is no problem; however, if it appears in other seasons, it is inauspicious, indicating minor financial loss, obstacles arising from trivial matters, and disputes and troubles from verbal conflicts. It also brings about burdens from unexpected sources of wealth, and worries within the household, causing one to be constantly restricted. Sixth, dark colors, also called dull colors, indicate illness and misfortune. They also signify interference from petty people, a decline in financial luck, efforts without results, and kindness leading to resentment. There are many burdens to deal with, and one cannot easily refuse due to face-saving considerations. Matters are complicated with limited results. Additionally, they indicate a growing gap between people, with mutual lack of understanding.

Seventh, the slippery color indicates lighter illnesses, minor setbacks, and small losses of money; due to being cautious, one may end up causing disputes, and there are unavoidable minor troubles, which require more procedures and more detours when handling affairs, causing things to be delayed and not concluded promptly. Eighth, the sticky color indicates superficial and unfounded influences: things are delayed and obstructed halfway, and nothing can be done to one's satisfaction; it also indicates forming quarrels and grievances with others, which are repeated and end in vain, leading to failure in social interactions, breaking promises made beforehand; everything is not satisfactory, causing inner distress, and there are also some minor illnesses.

Ninth, the gloomy color, also called the withered color, is an inauspicious color indicating mourning and weeping, legal troubles and imprisonment, suffering injustice and losing money, fear, suspicion, jealousy, and illness and misfortune; family members suffer many calamities, the person themselves are often sick, everything they are involved in leads to trouble, most plans fail, and there may even be the disaster of death. Tenth, the red color is an inauspicious color, unfavorable in all four seasons, indicating mourning and weeping, encountering danger and fear, being imprisoned and shackled, getting injured or disabled, being secretly harmed or involved in disputes, suffering a serious illness, experiencing a great defeat, suffering significant losses, and even facing the danger of life and death.

Eleventh, the color vermilion signifies sorrow and is associated with calamities that affect family members. Internally, it refers to the death of parents, brothers, wives, concubines, and children; externally, it refers to the death of close relatives, maternal and marital relatives, and uncles, aunts, and maternal uncles. It also indicates minor illnesses, insomnia, and ailments affecting the yin aspect of the body. Twelfth, the color red is an inauspicious color. Its harmful effects can be somewhat mitigated when it is in season during summer. It signifies fear, danger, injury, or sudden death, unexpected misfortunes, failure of affairs, disputes with others, being secretly harmed, or imprisonment. This color causes greater harm and more danger, and may even lead to calamity resulting in death.

Thirteenth, black color is the most dangerous, indicating danger in all four seasons, but during winter when it is in command, it can alleviate ruin; it signifies peril, collapse, injury, legal troubles and imprisonment, sudden calamities, and major illness or disaster, possibly leading to death. Fourteenth, dull color, also called stagnant color or dusty color, is the color indicating major illness and disaster; it usually shows signs of weakness or pre-existing chronic diseases; it also indicates decline of family fortune, loss of wealth, injury to family members, mental confusion (the original text says 'confusion and anger' but should be 'confusion and dazed'), disordered actions, and severe cases may also lead to death.

The Importance of Qi and Color in Divination

Chen Gongdu said: The various kinds of auspicious and inauspicious appearances listed above, along with the various facts they govern, have already included all the good and bad fortune of human affairs. However, the same appearance still has distinctions of light and heavy significance, and it must be related to the person's status to determine exactly which matter it applies to. There are distinctions of light and heavy, as well as large and small, and there are differences between 'direct reception' (receiving directly), 'indirect reception' (being affected indirectly), and 'connected reception' (being involved and affected by others). Some apply only to one matter, some apply to two matters, and some are indirectly connected and affected. The following classification is specially listed to help those who use mirrors for observation to infer and determine.

First, the yellow and purple hues are both auspicious colors. If they appear on a person in a position of rank and authority, it indicates promotion, gaining power and achievements, an increase in wealth and official rewards, and a flourishing family with additional good fortune. Second, if yellow and purple hues appear on wealthy merchants, it signifies acquiring land and property, opening new sources of wealth, making substantial profits by seizing opportunities, or unexpectedly receiving a fortune. At the same time, the household remains safe and secure, and the children are also thriving.

Third, if the colors yellow and purple appear on a poor person engaged in hard labor, the outcome will be an unexpected windfall, or making a profit many times over through cunning means; or receiving aid from relatives and kin, thereby securing a means of livelihood; or collaborating with neighbors and friends to find a solution; and the household members will also remain safe and unharmed. Fourth, if the colors yellow and purple appear on someone engaged in lowly occupations, living in a lowly position, the outcome will be a rare and fortunate encounter, causing a sudden fame; unexpectedly finding a means of survival, profiting from rising market conditions; or being recognized and supported by a nobleman, or being cherished and promoted by a wealthy person. It is evident that different social standings and statuses result in varying levels of fortune and privilege.

Fifth, if yellow and purple colors appear on a person with wisdom, the outcome will be thorough planning and everything going as desired, with timing in harmony and all things proceeding smoothly. There will be assistance from friends and relatives, and harmony with people above and below. Thus, one can fully obtain authority and benefits, achieving double the results. Sixth, if yellow and purple colors appear on a person without wisdom, the outcome will be that reputation comes without seeking and benefits are obtained without effort. People used will be effective, and those entrusted will be reliable. However, the results will only be half of what is naturally achieved, falling short of those with wisdom.

Seventh, if the colors yellow and purple appear on a person of average ability, it indicates relying on others' strength to advance, using one end as a bridge to reach the other, forming a transitional step; working together with others to benefit both sides, maintaining propriety internally and expanding situations externally, sharing the same boat; thus, name and reality correspond, achieving two benefits at once. It is evident that people of different abilities and wisdom receive different levels of benefits. Eighth, if the colors yellow and purple appear on a person with a quick temper, it indicates acting hastily and seizing the opportunity at the right moment, being proactive and taking the initiative. Such people achieve success quickly and rise rapidly, but this success is temporary and not lasting.

Ninth, if yellow and purple colors appear on someone who is kind, gentle, and compliant, it indicates deep planning and steady insight leading to success, thorough consideration, and immediate effectiveness. Such people achieve success slowly and attain prosperity steadily, belonging to those who advance by holding back. Tenth, if yellow and purple colors appear on someone neither firm nor yielding, with a moderate disposition, it indicates making progress through indirect means and taking proper action when the time is ripe to gain benefits. Such people achieve stable success and, after attaining prosperity, remain content, belonging to those who uphold righteousness and can maintain their success over time. Clearly, differing temperaments of firmness and flexibility result in different outcomes in terms of bold advancement, maintaining success, and enduring perseverance.

Eleventh, if the colors yellow and purple appear on a person who acts with integrity and uprightness, it indicates that he values a good reputation and strives to cultivate virtue, seeks goodness and endeavors to achieve meritorious deeds; all gains he obtains follow the proper path, and all wealth he acquires is through just means. This can be interpreted as 'reputation is more important than profit'. Twelfth, if the colors yellow and purple appear on a person who acts deceitfully and greedily, it indicates that he resorts to underhanded tactics, is ever so willing to take advantage of any opportunity, flatters and ingratiates himself, displaying all sorts of base behavior; the paths he takes are crooked, and the wealth he acquires is obtained through harsh exploitation. This can be interpreted as 'prioritizing profit while having a bad reputation'.

Thirteenth, if the colors yellow and purple appear on a person who is upright and honest or corrupt and greedy, it indicates that he uses his intelligence to seek benefits and fulfills his responsibilities to achieve success. He wishes to do good deeds but hesitates to take the initiative, and he wants to do evil but dares not act freely. This can be interpreted as 'name and gain are in harmony'. It is evident that the conduct of an upright person differs from that of a corrupt one; whether he seeks reputation, pursues profit, or gains both, they vary accordingly. Fourteenth, if the colors yellow and purple appear on a person who is decisive and cautious, it indicates that he adheres to rules without overstepping, thus achieving effectiveness; he fulfills his duties without disorder, thereby gaining benefits. In his pursuit of advancement, he knows when to stop, thus attaining peace and blessings; his success is solid, and he follows a long-term strategy. This can be interpreted as 'ordered benefits'.

Fifteenth, if yellow and purple colors appear on a person who is decisive and venturesome, the outcome is boundless prosperity, with some element of forced risk-taking: disregarding risks and instability, focusing entirely on career; avoiding no suspicion or hardship, yet emphasizing the satisfaction of private desires. This can be interpreted as "unlawful sudden success." Sixteenth, if yellow and purple colors appear on a person who is cautious and venturesome, the outcome is a modest gain amidst seeking security, driven by circumstances leading to some development: those who earnestly endeavor fail to succeed, while those who do not actively seek advancement unexpectedly achieve success. This can be interpreted as "temporary adaptation and selection." Thus, the difference between being cautious and venturesome in decision-making leads to different amounts and durations of gain.

Seventeenth, if yellow and purple colors appear on someone in a stable situation, it indicates that little effort is needed but many things are achieved, and many wishes are fulfilled without much labor. One should follow the trend and take advantage of human resources, and this can be interpreted as "having prepared in advance, and success comes naturally." Eighteenth, if yellow and purple colors appear on someone in a difficult situation, it indicates that one has unrealistic ambitions and relies on luck to succeed. One desires too much but also exerts effort; acting against the trend and striving forcefully, using all one's cunning to compete, this can be interpreted as "taking advantage of opportunities through cunning."

Nineteenth, if the colors yellow and purple appear on someone whose situation is between stability and pressure, it indicates that although ideals exist, there is hesitation and indecision; messages coming from afar actually hinder action; matters can only be advanced through indirect means; although benefits are within reach, they are always slightly lacking, and opportunities are not favorable, so only half of the wishes can be fulfilled. Therefore, the environment being stable or pressured is different; whether to wait for the right moment, act forcefully, or be in between, the situations vary. Twentieth, if the colors yellow and purple appear on a person of great capacity, it indicates sacrificing small gains for greater ones, and achieving distant goals through tranquility; having foresight and firm decisions, achieving complete success; working harmoniously with others for mutual benefit, examining the situation, seizing the opportunity, and gaining both reputation and wealth. This can be interpreted as "wise and far-sighted."

Twenty-first, if the colors yellow and purple appear on a person with a narrow mind, it indicates a tendency to seek small gains and be competitive, to desire more in everything and act on impulse; lacking ability yet taking on heavy responsibilities and hoping for success by chance, being content with success and arrogant, achieving success through such means. This should be interpreted as "stubborn and self-willed, acting independently and arbitrarily." Twenty-second, if the colors yellow and purple appear on a person with a mind that is between broad and narrow, it indicates remembering old kindnesses but not tolerating wicked people, having some shortcomings in small matters but overall achieving more; valuing virtue but not enduring humiliation, exerting double the effort yet achieving half the result; gaining only temporary benefits and being able to cooperate only temporarily. This should be interpreted as "taking advantage of circumstances and relying on others' strength." It is evident that the difference in the breadth of a person's mind leads to different capacities for accommodating benefits, and the increase or decrease in such capacities during times of peace or chaos also varies accordingly.

Twenty-third, the four colors black, red, crimson, and惨 (gloomy) are the most ominous colors indicating death, ruin, danger, and injury. If these appear on a person of noble rank or authority, the outcome will be entrapment in danger and imprisonment, dismissal from office and loss of power, and in severe cases, the entire family being executed. Some will be due to excessive merit alarming the sovereign and attracting hatred, others due to contention for power leading to secret plots against them, others due to forming factions and creating enemies, and others due to steadfast righteousness and being bravely sacrificed. Twenty-fourth, if these four colors appear on wealthy merchants and gentry, it indicates perilous financial loss and being implicated in others' misfortunes, and also signifies repeated punishments and loss of family members. Some will be due to bandit raids and destruction, others due to villains taking advantage of opportunities, others due to internal strife caused by relatives and clan members, and others due to neighbors harboring ill intentions and plotting against them.

Twenty-fifth, if the colors black, red, and crimson appear on a poor and laboring person, the outcome will be calamity, fright, loss of wealth, and being implicated and imprisoned. The worst case is sudden natural disasters from heaven, the next is unforeseen human misfortunes: some will face great danger from water and fire, some will be falsely accused and implicated by thieves, some will suffer from bloodshed, and some will face turmoil in the times. Twenty-sixth, if these four colors appear on a person engaged in lowly occupations and of low status, the outcome will be calamity, fear, wearing shackles, losing all wealth and being homeless. The worst case is even suicide by hanging; the lighter cases are also hardship, setbacks, and poverty. Some will suffer from greed and ambition leading to misfortune, some will be deceived due to foolishness and incompetence; thus, they may suffer injuries, damage to limbs, people scattering and dispersing, and all wealth being lost. It is evident that different social standings and distinctions between wealth and poverty lead to different kinds of misfortunes: some are directly suffered, some are suffered through association, and some are suffered due to being implicated.

Twenty-seventh, if the colors black, red, crimson, and dark appear on a person of intelligence, it indicates that self-deception leads to clumsy efforts and dangerous situations, and that seeking gain results in loss and harm. It may also mean that relying on one's talent leads to hidden troubles, or that forcing progress leads to collapse in the middle. In the end, it is great profit that clouds his wisdom, and personal desire that makes him forget danger. Twenty-eighth, if these four colors appear on a person without intelligence, it indicates that he steps into a trap yet remains greedy, or that he stands on a blade without realizing it. It may also mean that he is overturned by power and wealth, or that he indulges in vice and sensuality, leading to his downfall.

Twenty-ninth, if the colors black, red, crimson, and dark appear on a person of average ability, it indicates suffering from injustice and hidden worries, and the danger of being implicated in others' troubles. Matters become as tangled as spider silk, with confusion and complications. Loss of wealth occurs, and further delays and entanglements follow. One is oppressed by relatives and burdened by family members, surrounded on all sides. Even those who are supposed to be close relatives turn into enemies. It is evident that the wisdom and intelligence of people differ; some suffer misfortune due to taking shortcuts, others due to being wronged, and others are indirectly involved. Each case is different. Thirtieth, if these four colors appear on a person with a hot temper, it indicates stubbornness and rash actions, planting one's own misfortune and inviting sudden calamities. Relying on brutality as courage, being stubborn without considering life or death, and disregarding consequences; harboring arrogance and cruelty, insulting others without considering the timing—these are all paths leading to self-inflicted guilt.

Thirty-first, if the colors black, red, and crimson appear on a person who is gentle and kind-hearted, it indicates that they will remain content with their own position but suffer from others' deceit, act according to reason but be implicated by others; they will suffer humiliation and loss, and when unexpected events occur, they will be anxious in their hearts. They will be indecisive in matters, and fail to judge the urgency and importance properly. Thirty-second, if these four colors appear on a person who is neither strong nor gentle, and whose nature is moderate, it indicates that they will misjudge people and suffer losses, or act against what is clearly impossible and thus invite obstacles; or be blinded by small gains and suffer great calamities soon after; or rush into a trap without thinking, and face two kinds of misfortunes at once. It is evident that the severity and complexity of the misfortunes vary according to the nature of the person, whether they are gentle or strong.

Thirty-third, if the four colors black, red, crimson, and dark appear on a person who acts with integrity and uprightness, it indicates that he does not seek gain yet still suffers loss, and that his admiration for righteousness brings him misfortune; he is slandered without cause merely because he disagrees with others; his efforts are sabotaged secretly because he refuses to compromise his principles. Thirty-fourth, if these four colors appear on a person who acts deceitfully and greedily, it indicates that he is imprisoned due to his reckless desires, and incurs enmity through his base actions; he causes great ruin by fighting over rare treasures, and invites death through his indulgence in gambling, horses, and sensual pleasures.

Thirty-fifth, if the colors black, red, crimson, and dark appear on a person who is upright and honest or corrupt and greedy, it indicates that a small matter may lead to a great disaster, as a single word may trigger a deadly situation. When kindness and resentment are mixed together, they become the gateway to calamity. When close and distant relationships are undermined, they become the nest of disputes. Thus, in conduct, the upright and the corrupt differ, and when disaster strikes, whether to take or abandon, whether to rely on power, varies accordingly. Thirty-sixth, if these four colors appear on a person who is decisive and cautious, it indicates that the original plan may change midway, causing loss. Being overly cautious and overthinking may become a harm. Seeking completeness may result in loss and financial damage. Doubtful and uncertain decisions may lead to missed opportunities. Suddenly, when faced with a situation, one may collapse, and the disaster arises from close quarters.

Thirty-seventh, if the four colors black, red, crimson, and dark appear on someone who is making a decisive decision or taking a risky action, it indicates a desperate gamble leading to total collapse, insufficient strength yet bearing heavy responsibilities resulting in failure; forgetting gratitude and remembering grievances, advancing step by step with aggression, only to be trapped in a trap set by others; holding a biased view of using evil to counter good, only to be deceived by those close to them. Thirty-eighth, if these four colors appear on someone who is cautious and venturesome, it indicates that although the plan is well thought out, it is obstructed; although there are enough people, they become obstacles. However, when facing danger, one can find a way out through quick thinking, and when about to collapse, one can stop in the middle and change the situation. This shows that being cautious and venturesome differ in decision-making, and the degree of misfortune and the ability to reduce it also vary.

Thirty-ninth, if the colors black, red, crimson, and dark appear on someone in a stable situation, it indicates being harmed by personal indulgences, and being disturbed by relatives and kin; once there is a crack in family affairs, someone will take advantage and harass them; also, if there are traps set in external dealings, someone will take the opportunity to harm them. Fortieth, if these four colors appear on someone in a desperate situation, it indicates repeated setbacks, three or four consecutive dangers, leading to ruin and loss of reputation, exhaustion of strength and loss of external support; or being obstructed by enemies or relatives with grievances, or being held back by bloodshed and illness, resulting in unexpected misfortune.

Forty-first, if the colors black, red, and crimson appear on someone whose situation is between security and pressure, the outcome will be that attempting to advance meets resistance and loss, while retreating results in the loss of power; being led into crisis by vanity and falling into dire straits due to special profits; finding it difficult to move forward or retreat, with harm everywhere; hesitating between action and inaction, leading to resentment. It is evident that the environment of security and pressure differs, and whether misfortunes come from unexpected events or are predictable, their outcomes vary. Forty-second, if these four colors appear on a person of great capacity, the outcome will be fear and loss from natural disasters, hindrances from prevailing circumstances, worries from family ties, illness from external pathogens known as the six yin, and the decline of the household due to the punishment of family members.

Forty-third, if the colors black, red, and crimson appear on a person of narrow-mindedness, the outcome will be stubbornness and self-will leading to loss, insufficient ability yet being in a dangerous situation resulting in self-inflicted death by刎; due to arrogance and negligence, both superiors and subordinates suffer harm, and due to impulsive actions, one is forced by close associates; indulgence in improper desires sows evil causes, and greed for wealth brings calamity. Forty-fourth, if these four colors appear on a person whose capacity is between broad and narrow, the outcome will be wanting to restrain oneself yet failing to do so, thus missing opportunities; doubting and uncertain, thus suffering hindrance; entangled in both kindness and resentment, thus inciting conflict; careless and inconsistent, thus harming family members; improper handling of matters, thus causing discord; and improper decisions on matters of departure and retention, thus suffering loss. It is evident that the difference between broad and narrow capacity leads to different outcomes, whether calamity comes from maintaining stillness or from taking risks.

Forty-fifth, the four kinds of complexion—slippery, greasy, dry, and dull—generally indicate the decline of the household, illness and misfortune, and matters of worry, doubt, and weeping. If these appear on a person of rank and authority, they signify diseases caused by disturbances of the seven emotions and desires, and expenses incurred through socializing, entertaining, and leisure activities. Alternatively, they may indicate losses due to servants stealing, mourning and weeping caused by disputes among close relatives, jealousy from disagreements with colleagues, or mistakes due to improper appointments and lack of clarity in employing people. Forty-sixth, if these four colors appear on wealthy merchants and gentry, they indicate diseases that result from neglecting medical treatment and are chronic and persistent. They also signify being burdened by the six relations, losing wealth, and having to endure silently. Additionally, they may involve theft by petty people, false accusations from neighbors, illness among family members, mourning and weeping, and the decline of the household.

Forty-seventh, if the four colors of slickness, dryness, turbidity, and obscurity appear on a poor person engaged in hard labor, they indicate the occurrence of "five labors" and "six external pathogenic factors" causing external diseases, losses due to careless business dealings and being wronged; also disturbances from neighbors and friends, conflicts with those living together, loss of items in the wife's domain, and illness or accidents involving children. Forty-eighth, if these four colors appear on someone engaged in lowly occupations and living in a lowly position, they indicate disorder in daily routines, lack of proper care leading to illness, damage to belongings resulting in unnecessary expenses; being deceived by competitors, humiliation due to improper handling; and constant suspicion and worries in the environment, with continuous troubles. It is evident that different status and qualifications lead to different levels of wealth and poverty, and thus the kinds of diseases, cold retreats, worries, and constraints they face also vary. In the text, "five labors" refer to prolonged looking, lying down, sitting, standing, and walking, which harm the body, while "six external pathogenic factors" refer to wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, and fire, all of which are the causes of diseases from external influences.

Fifty-third, if the four colors of slickness, dryness, clarity and obscurity appear on a person with a gentle and weak nature, it indicates a disease that is lingering and prolonged, with repeated hesitation and delay; indulgence in leniency allows villains to flourish and leads to the accumulation of hidden dangers, resulting in being deceived and losing money; every matter fails to conclude, with one problem not settled before another arises; encountering matters with hesitation and indecision leads to accumulated grievances; improper handling causes harm to others and brings self-reproach; lack of clear understanding leaves hidden dangers and creates enemies; due to temporary indulgence and leniency, punishment is incurred; due to suspicion and indecision, the family's fortune declines. It is evident that different natures of people, whether they suffer from misfortune or proper affliction, vary accordingly.

Thus, the difference between integrity and greed in conduct leads to varying degrees of obstacles. Fifty-eighth, if these four colors appear on a person who is decisive and cautious, it indicates overthinking leading to ailments such as obstruction and damage to the yin aspect of the stomach; being overly prepared for everything, yet losing money in trivial matters; wanting to abandon small gains for greater ones, yet facing constant obstacles; being cautious and restrained only leads to slander and jealousy; additionally, there are hindrances from changing circumstances and setbacks from personnel changes.
