Heavenly Stems and Their Manifestations
Charting guides: BaZi Chart Calculator
Jia Wood is the first among the ten heavenly stems. It is a large tree that has already been cut down, with no branches or roots. To last for thousands of years in the world, it must be buried deep in thousands of feet of sandy mud. Jia relies on Chen to be the repository of cement and earth, and by being covered with earth it can endure for a long time. If it is to be made into beams and pillars, it needs Geng Metal to cut it, and thus metal becomes its useful god. If it is burned into ash, then fire is excessive and becomes a disaster. This dull piece of wood has no inherent skill or subtlety; it simply waits for spring and autumn to pass, and is left to the arrangement of the seasons.
Yi wood is a living tree with deep roots, suitable only for planting in warm, sunny areas and not in damp, shady places. It is most afraid of too much water causing its roots to float. It does not need to be cut as severely as Jia wood does with Geng metal. If it moves to the south, the intense fire will bring serious misfortunes; if it moves to the west, the strong metal and heavy earth will bring even greater troubles. One must know that the timber for beams and pillars comes from cut Jia wood, not from this living Yi wood with its roots intact. Although Jia and Yi are both wood, their uses are vastly different, and it is especially important to distinguish between them.
Bing fire is clearly a bright sun, originating from a dignified and upright place to establish norms and principles. Its great light does not merely illuminate thousands of miles, but its intense flame can reach even the most distant and remote places. Although it is born from wood, it does not acknowledge floating, rootless wood as its father; although it can generate earth, it does not wish to regard wet mud as its child. How could a stagnant, sourceless pond in the rivers and lakes overcome it? It fears excessive wood forming a forest, which would block the sunlight and cause calamity.
The image of Ding fire is a candle. When it meets Bing fire, the sun, its light is diminished. When Ding fire is in season, it can melt thousands of catties of iron; but when it is out of season, it cannot even melt an inch of gold. Even a small amount of Jia wood (dry wood) is enough to ignite it; however, even if there is a lot of Yi wood or water-rich wood, it cannot kindle it. The difference between strong and weak Ding fire is very important to distinguish: strong Ding fire is like a furnace of charcoal, while weak Ding fire is merely a single candle.
The Wu earth is like a city wall or embankment, needing to hold back rivers, lakes, and seas. Its foundation must be strong and solid. If there is a harmonious combination and support in the four pillars, its form is still strong. However, if the day stem is weak and lacks a solid foundation, the embankment will surely collapse. When its strength is weak, it cannot withstand the leakage caused by metal. Once the embankment is built, why would it need wood to channel the flow? Throughout its life, Wu earth most needs the southeast fire and earth to support its strength. But if the body is already strong and it continues to move towards the southeast, it will lose balance and harmony.
Ji earth is the soil of fields and gardens, belonging to the four corners of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei. The virtue of Kun is deep, capable of serving as the foundation for the growth of all things. When it reaches a place where water and metal are strong, it itself becomes weak. Only when there is fire to generate it and earth to support it does the pattern become most extraordinary. When it is out of its season, even a sword or spear cannot suppress it; only when it is in its proper season can it be cultivated with a hoe and farming tools. Do not merely boast about strong and numerous prints (earth elements). If the soil of the fields is not disturbed by some punishment and clash, it will ultimately be unsuitable.
Geng metal is stubborn and inclined to be rigid in nature; it requires fire to refine it into a useful tool. It is most afraid of going to a water region where its strength is drained. If it is born in summer and travels through the southeast, it has undergone sufficient refining. If it is born in autumn and travels through the northwest, it also has some brilliance. If water is too strong, it turns back to overcome Geng metal; if wood is too vigorous, the metal will cut the wood, causing harm to itself. If there is a heavy presence of Wu Ji in the heavenly stems and Chen Xu Chou Wei in the earthly branches, without encounteringpunishment and clash to break through the earth, Geng metal will be buried and unable to emerge.
Xin metal is like pearls and jade, with a nature that is refined and responsive. It especially prefers warm yang energy and clear sandy water for purification. It does not need intense fire to refine it. To nourish and support it, it prefers moist Ji earth to generate. When there is an abundance of water and strong fire, it is suitable to go to the Northwest metal and water land. If the water is cold and the metal is frozen, then Bing and Ding fire are needed to thaw and regulate the climate. As long as it is seated on its own stem and rooted, and is in a strong position, why worry that thick earth will bury its form?
Nin water is vast and flowing, merging with all rivers, spreading throughout the world without bounds. When there is an accumulation of water in the heavenly stems and earthly branches, it becomes drifting without a destination. If there is a heavy meeting of fire and earth, it will dry up its source. It is born in午 and nurtured in未, so it is said that its growth and development occur between午 and未. Its growth is in申 and its official destiny is in亥. Since申 belongs to坤 and亥 belongs to乾, it is said that its growth and official destiny belong to乾 and坤. If the壬 water is already strong and vigorous, it is originally difficult to have wealth and official positions. If it further moves towards the northwest of metal and water, it will suffer misfortune in its youth.
Is癸 water merely a drop of dew? If it connects with亥 and子, it becomes a river and a stream. If the four pillars lack the water roots such as申 (Kun position) and子 (Kan position), it will naturally be weak; even if there are wealth and official positions in the chart, they should not be excessive. If the triple harmony ofShen-Zi-Chen (Water triad) (water triad) is fully present in the earthly branches, it is an excellent configuration. If the triple harmony ofYin-Wu-Xu (Fire triad) (fire triad) is complete, it should be balanced. If there is also fire and earth in power and the person is born in the height of summer, then going to the northwest metal and water areas in the big luck years will not be excessive.
Earthly Branches: Their Manifestations
The moon's branch is in the position of Zi water, taking the name of "Shenhou" as its leader, like a stream or a vast expanse of clear water that never runs dry. At this time, the heavenly path has a returning yang, and the earthy element of Ji soil within Zi water also has strong vitality; on earth, the water's warmth returns, and metal is being nurtured here. If the branch of Wu comes to clash and break, the matter will become uncertain and unstable; even if the branch of Mao comes to cause conflict, the mutual generation between water and wood still retains some affection. If among the four pillars there are branches of Shen and Chen that form the Triple Harmony water pattern, then it becomes the grand scene of rivers and seas surging forward with great waves and roaring sounds.
In the twelfth lunar month, the Month Builder is Chou, which is associated with cold and ice; yet who would know that by this time the heavenly condition has already turned into the "second yang" phase. Chou is originally warm earth, indeed capable of nurturing all things; although the hidden Xin metal within Chou is in a cold place, it is not necessarily confined and unused. Chou is in conflict and opposition with Xu and Wei, but this is not entirely without use, for it can just open the gate of the metal storehouse. Chou also forms a metal group with You (rooster) and Si (snake), indeed having its own path. If there are many water and wood elements in the day pillar and hour pillar, then one must necessarily proceed to the fire regions of Xun (southeast) and Li (south).
Yin belongs to the Gen palace and is wood, appearing in the beginning of spring. At this time, the energy of three yang converges, and Bing fire is born in Yin. It shares the same aspirations with Si (snake) and Shen (monkey), and together they are called the three esteemed guests. It shares the same nature with Mao and Wei, and they are of the same family. To achieve transcendence, it relies entirely on meeting Wu fire to form the fire trinity of Yin-Wu-Xu. It most fears Shen metal coming to break the禄 ground and injuring the monthly stem. If there is already too much fire in the four pillars, it dislikes further travel to fire places. Dry wood is never suitable for heading south.
The wood of the卯 branch is at its peak in mid-spring, flourishing with rich vitality, yet is it not afraid of metal? If the heavenly stems of Geng and Xin appear repeatedly, and the earthly branches bring further worries with the presence of Shen and You, then the water of Hai and Zi coming heavily also dislikes the excess of Ren and Gui. Too much water would cause the wood to float. Misfortune arises when the酉 branch comes into conflict, indicating the withering of branches and leaves; good fortune comes when the亥 and 未 branches form a triple harmony, creating a dense forest-like appearance. If the day pillar and hour pillar are in the heavy metal of autumn, and one travels westward, the calamity would become unbearable.
In the third month, the earth element of Chen is like warm and moist cement soil, capable of nurturing and cultivating the roots of myriad plants. For Jia wood, Chen is a declining place, but for Yi wood, there is still some residual energy in Chen. Although water is considered to be stored in Chen, there is actually hidden Gui water within, which is like the soul returning to its origin. To use this reservoir of water, one needs a key to open it — that key is Xu, which comes to clash with Chen. However, if three such clashes occur together, it becomes like breaking through a door to enter. If there is a heavy presence of water and wood along with the Northwest fortune, one can only worry about losing the original Chen earth.
In the early summer, the fire becomes stronger and brighter, and the natural transformations flow smoothly. This is the time when six yang forces are fully mature. Here, the metal of Geng is in its growth phase, though it is not in its own season, but it is entirely supported by the fire of Bing in Si. The earth of Wu is in its official position and receives its fortune in Si, also benefiting from this motherly fire. Among the three punishments of Yin, Si and Shen (which is called "Transmission") are in a conflicting relationship, but this conflict is actually not harmful, because Si and Shen can also form a harmonious relationship. However, if it is confronted by Hai (which is called "Dengming"), it will suffer damage. If one's fortune leads to the southeast region where wood and fire flourish, then it will become a fierce fire that burns the sky, which is quite extraordinary.
In the month of午, the fire is very strong and rising, with six yang energies reaching their peak, while a single yin has already quietly emerged. The metal of庚 is weak and loses its position in午, having no use; the earth of己 gains its fortune in午, thus achieving success. If both申 and子 appear, forming a water trinity, they will fight against and control the fire. If both戌 and寅 appear, forming a fire trinity, the fire will become even brighter. The southeast area of wood and fire is where it is strong; but once it moves to the northwest of metal and water, the fire will become weak and confined, and its form will be destroyed.
In the month of Wei, the Yin energy becomes deeper and the fire gradually weakens. The Wei earth contains hidden Jia wood, Ding fire, and Ji earth, which for certain day masters represent official positions and the seal, but do not represent wealth. If there are no亥 or卯 nearby to form a combination, the nature of the wood formation cannot be changed. However, if there are distant punishments and clashes, the wood storage can still be opened. If there is no fire in the formation, fear walking through metal and water territories; since it is already very cold, one prefers Bing and Ding fire to warm the formation. Here, it is most important to clearly distinguish between the favorable and unfavorable elements for the useful god. Do not mistake a precious jade for a piece of rough stone.
When the metal of the Hourly Branch Shen is strong, if the lunar branch meets it, the water of Ren and the earth of Wu are both in the Growth position in this palace. If there is fire from Si or Wu to refine it, it is like forging swords and spears in a great furnace; if it combines with Zi or Chen to form a water pattern, then it is like being washed by water and revealing its sharpness. Although there is much wood, if there is no fire to assist the wood, metal will ultimately overcome it. However, if earth is too heavy and buries the metal, it will be dangerous. As for the metal of Shen, it is entirely different from the gentle and delicate metal of Xin, which is like pearls and jade.
In August, the metal of You (酉) is called 「From Kuai」, and it has already gained its name. It is admirable for its clear and bright appearance, like white metal and clear water. If there is too much fire, going east will worry about the wood of Yin and Mao coming to nourish the fire; if the wood is already strong, going south will fear the fire of Bing and Ding coming to overcome the metal. If the four pillars contain Chen or Chou, which are moist and muddy earth, they can help to generate metal. When the person's fortune moves to the northwest, which is the land of metal and water, how can it be said to be emotionless? If the person has the triple harmony of Si, Chou, and You to form a metal trinity, the edge of the metal becomes even sharper, surpassing the unrefined, crude metal that has not been tempered.
In September, the戌 sign is called 「River Chief」, and its nature is the most vigorous. Do not merely regard it as the place where all things are stored.戌 is a fire warehouse, like a great furnace with intense fire, capable of shaping objects. Dull iron and stubborn metal rely entirely on it to undergo forging. When戌 confronts辰 (the sea cave dragon), it breaks open the water reservoir and produces rain and dew; when it combines with寅 (the mountain peak tiger), it forms a fire pattern and brings forth literary excellence. Although戌 and亥 are called 「Tianluo」, which is a maze that confuses the soul, only people with fire destiny suffer harm when encountering them, because fire stored in a warehouse becomes dim and obscured.
The亥 branch is called 「Dengming」, representing deep water sources where snow and rain combine to produce cold air, marking the extreme of six yin. To warm this situation, the午 branch (called 「Shengguang」) with fire is essential, allowing the戊 earth to control the water. If the申 branch (called 「Chuansong」) does not come to generate the fire, even having more metal is of no use. All waters converge into亥, gathering the five lakes to form a grand scene. Together with卯 and未, they form a Triple Harmony of wood, which holds the water in place, showing a deliberate effort to complete the scene. If one wishes to find warmth between heaven and earth, one should look to艮 (寅), 震 (卯), 巽 (巳), and 离 (午).
Ziping's Sea of Profundity: The Ten Spirits
On the Harmful Official
The manifestation of the "Wounding Official" deity is like divine assistance. When using the Wounding Official, one must completely eliminate the Official star; if it is only partially wounded and the Official star still comes with strong vitality, the calamities will be endless. The saying "Wounding Official meets Official, causing myriad troubles" refers precisely to this situation.
If the month's stem falls exactly on the position of the wounded official, and the combination of the four pillars and the actions of the day's master also fall on the wounded official, and the person's fortune progresses to a place where the body is strong, this is truly a fortunate destiny. People with the wounded official pattern are often talented in many areas, look down on external things, and have a high temper, often believing that everyone in the world is inferior to themselves; therefore, even those in power are wary of them, and ordinary people also dislike them.
When the big destiny period meets the official star, calamities are unbearable; even if there are auspicious deities to resolve the situation, there will certainly be a serious illness that harms the body, or else one will face legal troubles during this period. If the destiny period is exactly in a place that diminishes the official star, and the wealth deity is not strong, with no wealth to generate the official star, then these are people who can live comfortably and enjoy happiness. Carefully analyzing this aspect, one can be absolutely certain.
There is another explanation: the term "Wang Guan" refers to a situation where I generate him. When a yang stem meets a yin stem or a yin stem meets a yang stem, and the one being generated by me is called "Wang Guan." It is also called "Dao Qi," because it steals and drains my original energy. If the "Yin Shou" is completely damaged and the day master is weak, then it is undesirable to see the official star, but one would not fear the seven killers. Although the seven killers are fierce, they can still generate the "Yin Shou" to protect the day master.
For example, Jia Wood takes Xin Metal as its official star. If in the chart, Ding Fire is strong (Ding is the official star of Jia Wood, and it directly harms Xin Metal), and Ding Fire can also generate Wu and Ji Earth wealth, then it is most undesirable to see another official star. At the same time, the body must be strong enough to bear it. If the official star is harmed but not completely destroyed, and the chart still shows the official star, once the year or the big cycle also brings the official star, the consequences can be severe. If the official star is completely destroyed by the official star, and the chart has no trace of it, then if the big cycle brings a strong body and the official star, it can result in a noble destiny.
If in the four pillars the official star is completely harmed, and the body is strong but there is no trace of wealth, then it is a fate of poverty and meager resources. Therefore, whenever there is a wounded official, it is essential to see wealth; because the wounded official can generate wealth, and wealth can generate official star, allowing the energy to flow smoothly. For those using the wounded official pattern, whether in the four pillars or in the years and months of destiny, it is important to avoid the official star; once the official star appears, it is called 'wounded official meeting official', which brings many troubles.
Using the Wounding Official pattern, one must definitely see the Wealth Star to be considered valid. The harm caused by the Wounding Official is more severe than the direct attack from the Seven Killers, and its effects are as accurate as divine prophecy. If the Wounding Official appears in the Heavenly Stem of the year pillar, the parents cannot both be present; if it appears in the month pillar, the brothers cannot be fully protected; if it appears in the day pillar, the wife and concubine cannot be fully secured; if it appears in the hour pillar, there will be no descendants.
Other cases involving the Wounding Official star require that the Official star be completely wounded for good fortune, and wealth must also be present. Otherwise, minor consequences may include exile or banishment, and severe ones may involve punishment or execution. When the Wounding Official and the Official star continuously clash, life is in danger. If the month's stem is exactly the Wounding Official, and all other positions in the four pillars also relate to the Wounding Official, and the fortune leads to a place where the self is strong, then this is a noble destiny. People with the Wounding Official pattern often rely on their talent and look down on others, believing themselves superior. Virtuous people dislike them, while wicked people fear them.
When encountering official luck without the wealth star to save, it will certainly lead to major calamities; otherwise, it will result in obscure and difficult-to-cure illnesses that weaken the body, or else suffer from official punishment during the fortune period. If the four pillars have already exhausted the official stars, and the day master is weak, but gains fortune in the wealth aspect, this is called 'harmful official meets wealth'. Careful analysis ensures accuracy without error.
There is another view: if the four pillars originally contain a official star, then the calamity will be severe; if they do not originally contain an official star, then the calamity will be mild. Generally, when the four pillars meet an official star, or when they meet a harmful official and instead take the wealth star as the useful element, then when the wealth star reaches a favorable position in the big year, success will come; but when it reaches a position that destroys wealth, there may be danger to life and death. If the big year's earthly branch does not contain wealth, and only the heavenly stem shows a wealth character superficially, that is not helpful.
For example, someone born in the year Yihai, month Jichou, day Dinghai, and hour Gengxu: the Ding fire takes the壬water in the Hai branch as its official star. The branches Chou and Xu, which are both earth, are originally the injurious stars for Ding fire. However, Chou also serves as a metal warehouse, and the Geng metal in the hour stem is the wealth. Therefore, when this person enters the Sheng and You years, everything goes smoothly. But as the metal becomes stronger, the day's main element loses too much energy, and the person eventually dies. In general, anyone who destroys their official star will face continuous misfortune during their official star period. If they also meet this in the current year's heavenly stem, the result will be the same.
The official star can be completely weakened by the injurious official, which is very special; however, it is also feared that too much weakening may not be suitable. A weak body cannot withstand loss of energy, and without wealth to transform it, the loss of energy becomes a problem. Within this pattern, there are countless variations, and one must put in a lot of thought when analyzing it.
For a fire day master with earth as the official star, it is considered a harmful official star. Fire and earth harmful official stars should eliminate the official star completely, because fire is intense and earth is dry; seeing the official star brings bad luck. For a metal day master with water as the official star, it is considered a harmful official star, but in this case, the official star should be seen, because water is cold and metal is cold; the need for the official star of丙丁 fire to balance the climate is essential. For a wood day master with fire as the official star, it is considered a harmful official star, but seeing the official star brings vitality and support. For a earth day master with metal as the official star, it is considered a harmful official star, but removing the official star leads to another kind of official and noble status. Only in the case of a water day master with wood as the official star, the water and wood harmful official star pattern requires both wealth and official star to be present for a harmonious and satisfactory outcome.
The Wounding Official is not always a malevolent force; as long as something can control it—such as the Seal controlling the Wounding Official or Wealth transforming the Wounding Official—then one can still have abundant food and clothing. If the Heavenly Stem reveals the Food God and the Earthly Branches also form a harmonious connection, then one will have many descendants and a long, healthy life like an evergreen pine.
If the destiny encounters a wounded official, it is originally not suitable; however, if there is wealth but no official, it becomes the foundation of good fortune. If the hour, day, and month positions form a wounded official pattern, and the fortune moves to a place where wealth is strong, it is certain to achieve high status and prestige.
When the injurious official star completely destroys the official star, it is considered very unusual; but if the official star still exists and the injurious official star comes to harm it, misfortunes will follow closely. Such people are self-reliant, bully others, and have a strong desire to win. As for the harm caused among family members, it adds even more sorrow.
The injurious official is not always a malevolent deity. For example, if someone with a day stem of Xin metal is born at the hour of Renchen, there is an indication of nobility. Ren is the injurious official of Xin, and Chen is a water reservoir. The metal and water complement each other, producing refined and elegant qualities. This kind of destiny shows its elegance in the autumn and winter seasons. If born in the months of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei, it indicates abundant wealth.

Bing fire has a strong root and continuous earth support, which is called fire and earth official stars; if born in the month of Shen or in the month of Hai (Hai is in the position of Qian), and a pattern is formed, then when the fortune moves towards metal and water, fame and wealth will rise accordingly; if fire and earth come again heavily, the destiny will be unstable.
