The Theory of Wounding Officials
Charting guides: BaZi Chart Calculator
When the Wounding Official (Wang Guan) has already wounded the Official Star (Guan Xing) completely, it actually prefers to see the Official Star again, because the Official Star can no longer cause harm, and its reappearance brings noble fortune. If the Wounding Official is solely focused on wealth, then once misfortune occurs, it is severe. If the Wounding Official uses the Seal (Yin) as its useful element to control the Seven Killers (Qi Sha), then using punishment is not as direct as using suppression. If the Wounding Official is considered in terms of wealth and also forms a harmonious combination, it can bring fame. Once the Wounding Official has used wealth, it is not advisable to go through the Seal's territory, because the Seal will take away the Food and Wounding elements, thus cutting off the source of wealth. When the Wounding Official meets the Official Star, going through the Seal's territory is not harmful, because the Seal can control the Wounding Official and protect the Official Star. As for the hidden wealth and Official Stars in the mixed earth elements of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, the Seal Star is not to be avoided.
Two Wu Earths contend for one Gui Water, indicating that the woman's fate involves remarrying, as one woman has two husbands competing for her. As the wife star, the wealth is harmed, leading to difficulty in raising sons. The presence of both the official star and the same zodiac sign in the chart does not fear the wealth path; the same zodiac sign can share the wealth, and the wealth does not harm the official star. The root of the official star is too strong, and the day master is too strong, leading to inevitable poverty, as the entire chart's life energy has nowhere to be released. The official star is harmed by the wealth star, indicating harm to the parents. The official and the seven deadly stars are mixed and unclear, indicating harm to the parents. Excess wealth with a weak day master also indicates harm to the parents.
Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches belong to the same energy (such as Jiayin and Yimao), and they indicate a tendency to harm the wife. The day pillars Xinmao and Wuyin are not afraid of multiple killers: Xin sitting on Mao is wealth, and Wu sitting on Yin is a killer and minister mutually generating, each having its own way to resolve the situation. For a woman's chart, seeing a peer indicates that sisters are competing to harmonize with the husband's star, and the person tends to be deceitful and talkative. If the wealth star is robbed by a劫财, it is not afraid of the killer being clearly revealed in the heavenly stems, because the killer can control the劫财 and actually become a rescue. For people with a fire destiny, the best configuration is to have the monthly branch belong to fire and the heavenly stem to have wood lifting up the fire. For day pillars like Guiyou, which are inherently weak, seeing a killer is definitely bad. The official and noble energy is too strong, and when it becomes extremely strong, it will inevitably lead to downfall. For earth destiny, regardless of the birth month and year, only the day pillar and hour pillar are considered, and it is not afraid of a mixture of officials and killers; however, this applies only to the yang stem Wu earth, not to the yin stem Ji earth.
The water in the Zi branch fears the fire trinity formed by Yin and Wu, but does not fear more water. The wood in the Yin branch does not fear metal. The metal hidden in Si does not fear fire. The Ji earth does not fear wood. The fire in Wu does not fear water. The earth in Wei and the metal in Shen do not fear water. The Ji earth and Xu earth do not fear wood. The wood in Mao fears the metal in You. The earth in Chen fears the wood in Yin. When the Yi wood is the day master born in the fifth month of Wu fire, it does not fear the seven deadly enemies. In summary, if the four pillars originally have a weakness, we should try to remove it; if the weakness is not removed, the destiny will not flourish.
On the Food God (Shi Shen)
The term "Shi Shen" refers to the one that can generate my wealth star. For example, Jia belongs to wood and Bing belongs to fire. Jia generates Bing, and Bing consumes and drains the vital energy of Jia, which should be called "stealing energy." So why is it called "Shi Shen" instead? Originally, Bing fire can generate Wu earth, and Wu earth is the wealth of Jia wood. This wealth of Wu earth, which is used for sustenance, is produced by Bing fire, so it is named "Shi Shen."
People with the food god in their destiny tend to have abundant wealth, sufficient food, a broad mind, a large physique, a carefree and comfortable lifestyle, children, and a long life. The food god generally dislikes encountering the official star, and it is most忌 to have the reverse food, which means the biased official star taking away the food god, as it fears harming the food god. However, they prefer to have the wealth star to generate with the food god, so that the energy released by the food god has a place to go.
The Food God (食神) appearing only once indicates a person of good fortune; if it appears too many times, it is not considered pure. It prefers the person's strength to be strong, and does not like the Official Star (印綬). It also fears the Official Star taking away the Food God, which would harm the Food God. Only when the person's fortune reaches a place where the Food God is in its proper position can the fortune be realized. Overall, its use is similar to that of the Wealth Star (财星).
For example, someone born in the year Jiwei, month Jisi, day Dingwei, and hour Xinchou: the Ding fire sees the Ji earth, which is the food god. In the chart, the Jisi and Xinchou combine to form a metal pattern, and metal is the wealth for the Ding fire, which is called food god generating wealth. Moreover, the day's main element is strong enough to bear this wealth, so this person has official positions and a long life.
For example, a birth chart with Yisi year, Yiyou month, Guiyou day, and Yimao hour: the heavenly stems have three Yi wood, which are all food gods for the Gui water day master. The earthly branches have Si and You combining to form a metal formation, which generates the Gui water, indicating a ministerial official. However, the three Yi woods are too strong, turning into a harmful official. The Gui water originally relies on Yi wood as its food god, but the Yi wood is weakened by the metal formation. Moreover, the three Yi woods combined with the strong Mao wood, which in turn overpowers the official star Ji earth. Therefore, this person achieves neither fame nor fortune.
When the food god is strong, it is more effective than the wealth star or the official star; however, the first thing is that the day master's heavenly stem must be strong enough to support and withstand this kind of loss. If instead, a biased teacher star comes to take away the food god, then one will be busy and hardworking all day, facing countless troubles and misfortunes.
The food god is not harmed, and the pattern becomes noble; for yang heavenly stems like Jia, Bing, Geng, and Ren as day masters, the noble aura is firm; for yin heavenly stems like Ding, Ji, Yi, and Xin as day masters, the blessings and honors are abundant. A bow is hung at the gate—ancient people hung a bow on the left side of the gate when a son was born—there must be heroes and outstanding figures in the family.
For a person with Jia wood as the day stem, encountering Bing fire is originally a case of losing vital energy, as Bing fire drains the wood's strength. However, since Bing fire can generate Wu and Ji earth (wealth), it is given the favorable name of "food god." People with this pattern are usually broad-minded, prosperous, and have abundant clothing and food. But if the official star (imperial seal) comes to take away the food god, it may lead to loneliness and poverty.
The day master is Wu Earth born in the hour of Shen. In Shen there is Geng Metal, which is the food god of Wu Earth. This pattern is very special. However, it must be born in autumn or winter for fortune and honor to be complete. If there is Ji Wood, Bing Fire, or the branches Yin and Mao that come to harm or destroy it—Ji Wood attacks my body, and Bing Fire takes away my food—then it is as if one has encountered something but not really encountered it, leading to a life of loneliness and hardship.
The food god is called the "Longevity Star," which is the deity of longevity. It is most wonderful to combine or support it. If the seven deadly stars appear in the year pillar or the hour pillar, there is nothing to worry about. The food god can withstand evil spirits and subdue the seven deadly stars. With its strength in the heavenly stem, this is the sign of a wealthy and prosperous person in the world.
The food god is in front, the seven killer is behind. The food god takes the position first and can control the seven killer, resulting in no loss of clothing and food, and deep wealth and honor. If the food god is closely next to the seven killer, it is instead restrained by the seven killer, leading to calamity. Such people spend their whole lives running around in the world without achieving anything.
On the Proper Wealth (Zeng Cai)
What is called "正财" (proper wealth)? The principle is similar to that of "正官" (proper official): when a yin stem encounters a yang stem's wealth, or a yang stem encounters a yin stem's wealth, and they form a pair of one yin and one yang, that is considered proper wealth. In general, proper wealth refers to the wealth of my wife. If someone gives me their daughter along with her wealth to serve me, I must be mentally and physically strong and healthy in order to enjoy it. If I myself am weak, timid, and unable to recover, then even if the wife's wealth is abundant, I can only watch it helplessly and ultimately be unable to benefit from it at all.
Therefore, wealth should be in harmony with the seasonal energy, but it should not be excessive. If wealth is indeed abundant, then the day stem itself must be strong enough to bear it, so that the excess wealth can be transformed into official status and prestige. If the heavenly stem is isolated and weak, then the person's destiny is poor and difficult to remedy. The wealth pattern prefers a strong day stem and should not be further restrained by places that suppress the self; what suppresses the self is the official ghost.
One is also afraid that the month's stem, which is generated by the day's stem, happens to be the weak and confined position of the day's main stem, and there is no "parents" god, which is the seal and restraint, in the four pillars to nourish me. At this time, if one continues to favor wealth, and the chart also contains wealth, it is called "excessive wealth." The strength is unable to bear the wealth, and misfortunes will arise continuously. Even if in youth one merely passes through the weak and confined position, things will be unsatisfactory, and troubles will follow one after another. When one reaches middle age or old age, and the fortune moves back to the "parents" position of the seal and restraint, or there is a triple harmony to support the body, then one will suddenly rise, and the momentum will be unstoppable.
If one is prosperous and successful in youth, but by old age has lost all structure and has nowhere to put one's wealth, it is not just a matter of being in a desperate situation and helpless, but also brings about many troubles. Because wealth is inherently a source of contention and conflict.
If the four pillars mutually generate each other, and also carry a noble pattern, without falling into kongwang, and if the fortune progresses to a place where the body is strong, with triple harmony forming a complete set to generate wealth, these are all signs of a noble destiny. As for the depth of blessings, it depends on the weight and intensity of the pattern formed.
Wealth in abundance can generate official status, but it is necessary to have a strong body to bear it. Wealth in abundance itself drains one's energy, and if the day stem is originally weak, then if the stream year and big destiny again injure the wealth star, there will certainly be unexpected misfortunes; if it is further accompanied by punishment and clash, and also meets the seven killers, the danger is unbearable.
There is another view: the Wealthy Official pattern favors a strong day stem and favors the Seal script, while it dislikes the Official star, dislikes the Reverse Food, dislikes a weak day stem, and also dislikes the Same Kind and Robber stars. The reason for disliking the Official star is to prevent it from stealing the energy of the wealth; the reason for favoring the Seal script is because the Seal can generate and support the weak day stem.
For example, if the day stem is Jia Wood and the main wealth is Ji Earth, then if the body is weak, misfortunes will come quickly. Those whose fate includes wealth and whose day stem is born under wealth are mostly from wealthy families; if they are not adopted by others, they must be illegitimate or have conflicts and mutual control with their parents. The best situation for wealth is when the body is strong, there is no劫财 to share or take away the wealth, and there is no official star to steal the wealth.
If the original destiny already has a official star and it is in a favorable position, then during the journey of fate, it is favorable to have many wealth stars to nourish the official star. Conversely, if only the wealth star is in a favorable position but there is no official star available, then during the journey of fate, it is undesirable to see another official star again, as it may harm the day master. What is feared here is a weak body. In general, whether it is a legitimate wealth star or an indirect wealth star, they all prefer to have the minister star to support them, and this will certainly bring good fortune.
For example, a person born in the year Xinchou, month Dingyou, day Dingsi, and hour Dingwei: the day master is Ding fire, sitting on the wealth position, and there is the triple harmony of Si-You-Chou metal, so the wealth is strong. Additionally, Wei is the wood storage, and wood can generate Ding fire, so the day master is strong enough to bear so much wealth. If the person's fortune moves towards the southeast wood and fire areas, they will naturally become very wealthy. Ding fire takes Ren water as the official and Geng metal as the wealth, and wealth can also generate official; when the day master enters a prosperous area, they will certainly prosper.
When seeking wealth, it is best to have the official star not appearing. For example, a birth chart with Gengshen as the year, Yiyou as the month, Bingshen as the day, and Bingshen as the hour: the day's ruler is Bingshen, which is fire. Seeing three Shens, all representing wealth, is not a good thing. Bingshen fire takes癸water as its official star and 辛metal as its wealth. Now, three Shens and one You are all wealth, so wealth is strong. The only problem is that the day's ruler is too weak. Bingshen fire is sick in Shen and dies in You, so it has no strength. The fortune also goes towards the western metal direction, making the body extremely weak. When wealth becomes strong, it produces ghosts, which means it generates official stars and killing stars that come back to harm the body. The day's ruler cannot bear this wealth, so poverty results.
For example, a person born in the year Yimao, month Guiwei, day Xinyou, and hour Wuzi: the day stem Xinyou (辛金) is seated on You (酉), which is its own strength. The year stem Yimao (乙木) is seated on Mao (卯), which is also its own strength. Both the self and the wealth are strong. Furthermore, the Gui water (癸水) food god generates wealth, and the Wu earth (戊土) scholar's robe supports the self, which should indicate a destiny of great wealth and high status.
For example, a person born in the year of Wuzi, month of Dingsi, day of Jiachen, and hour of Bingyin: the day stem Jiachen is the main element, and it is born in the fourth lunar month. The heavenly stem has both Bing and Ding fire, which nourish the earthy branch Si in the month, which contains Wu earth. Wu earth is the wealth for Jiachen wood. The hour branch Bingyin is also the禄 (lucky post) for Jiachen wood, so the wealth is strong. The person's own wood is also strong. In early years, the path of Wuwu and Jiwei was smooth. Later, when reaching the path of Xinyou, the official star appeared and brought misfortune. In the path of Renxu, the water element Ren water destroyed the Bing fire, causing the official star and the wealth to be lost, and the family suffered continuous deaths. At fifty-nine, entering the path of Guihai, which is strong for the body, the person found some ease. At sixty-five, encountering the flow year Renchen, the person died.
In his early years, this period falls under the "Wounding Official Sees Wealth" pattern, taking Wu soil as wealth. Therefore, during the Wuwu and Jiwei steps, fire and soil are very strong, generating soil and thus wealth is abundant. However, when entering Gengshen and Xinyou steps, encountering officials and killers, everything becomes difficult. Although Guihai is the official of Jia wood, it is also forbidden for fire and water to clash, and moreover, Hai contains hidden Ren water. When reaching Renchen year, the heavenly stem reveals Ren water, and the earth branch Chen is already present in the original birth chart. When the fortune and birth chart meet, death is certain. Generally, in the "Wounding Official Sees Wealth" pattern, it is disliked to see officials, and only wealth is desired. Especially, the great忌 is Ren water to overcome fire. If fire is overcome, it can no longer produce the soil wealth needed by Jia wood.
Discussing the concept of偏财 (biased wealth)
What is called "biased wealth" (偏财) refers to a situation where a yang heavenly stem encounters a yang wealth sign, or a yin heavenly stem encounters a yin wealth sign, resulting in the same type of wealth but lacking the harmonious relationship. Biased wealth is wealth shared by many people, and the main concern is that siblings or relatives (represented by same-sex partners such as the "jia" and "jue" elements) will come to compete for it. Once it is taken away, the fortune is incomplete. If the chart also contains an official star (官星), the wealth is not only taken by the competitors but also has to be used to generate the official star, leading to a double loss and causing continuous misfortunes.
Therefore,偏财 likes to be visible and is not afraid of being hidden in the branches, but it fears someone taking it away, or it falling into Kongwang. If either of these two situations occurs, one cannot attain official position and cannot hold onto wealth. The classic text says: those who have abandoned official position and driven away their wealth will only be left to endure a lonely and miserable life.
Though the wealth is weak, if one's fortune passes through a place where wealth is strong, they can still achieve success and prosperity. If wealth is originally strong, then wherever one goes, it is beneficial, but the fear is that the main day's strength is insufficient to bear such wealth. People with a partial wealth pattern are generous and not very stingy with money; as long as the partial wealth is well positioned, this quality will not be limited to just generosity.
A person with abundant wealth can also have a strong official position, how do we know this? Because when wealth is prosperous, it naturally generates official power. However, such people may be sincere in their relationships, yet they often resort to cunning and deceit. Wealth can benefit oneself, but it can also bring about slander and criticism. When one's fortune reaches a prosperous and strong place, both happiness and official rank will arrive together. One should be cautious if wealth becomes too strong, for siblings like the rival for wealth will surely come to disrupt, which would not be pleasant.
A fortune with abundant wealth must consider whether the wealth and the day stem are equally strong on both sides; if they are balanced, when the official star comes into play, wealth can be achieved. However, if the wealth is strong but the day stem is weak, when the official star appears in the fortune, the wealth will drain the vital energy and the official star will also harm the day stem; not only will wealth not be achieved, but one must also be cautious of misfortunes.
If the four pillars originally contain the official star, then it is considered a good fate; but if the four pillars have many brothers and siblings (like the jiecai and bishan) emerging together, even if the fortune moves into the official's territory, it is very difficult to achieve wealth. Therefore, it is said: the key lies in understanding the concept of flexibility and adaptability.
On the Proper Official (Zhen Guan)
The term "zheng guan" refers to cases such as Jia wood encountering Xin metal. When a yin stem is overcome by a yang stem, it is called "guan," and when a yang stem is overcome by a yin stem, it is called "gui." In general, the relationship between yin and yang must be balanced, with the overcoming being harmonious, in order to form the concept of "guan." Basically, one should proceed to a place where the "guan" is strong, and this depends on the month's stem, which is known as the "tigang." When examining a birth chart, one should first look at the tigang, and then consider the other three pillars.
Since it has formed the pattern of a proper official, if the fortune moves to a place where the official star is prosperous and strong, or if the official star forms a complete pattern without encountering the place that harms the official, and instead moves to a place where wealth is strong and generates the official, these are all places that bring blessings. The official star is a symbol of nobility and dignity, and it most dislikes being harmed, conflicting, broken, or harmed. If the official star is hidden or revealed in the heavenly stems of the year, month, and hour, then having too many officials will lead to confusion and the blessings will become uncertain. It is also necessary to examine whether there are other patterns formed by the year or hour, and where the blessings are located, before one can determine its fortune and misfortune.
If one insists on following only one path rigidly, they cannot be flexible, inevitably leading to the disaster of "a small error leads to a great mistake." The scripture says "only those who can adapt and change skillfully are truly profound," which means exactly this. If there are too many official stars, it actually ceases to be a blessing. Why? Because a person's destiny always requires the harmonious balance of energies. Both excess and deficiency are equally problematic; the harmonious balance brings deep blessings, while excessive emphasis on one aspect leads to calamity.
Since the month's stem is taken as the official post (zhang guan), if another minister (pian guan) appears on the stem of the year pillar or the hour pillar, it becomes a mixture of official and minister (guan sha hunza). This point must be carefully analyzed according to the relative strength. It is also said that the official post (zheng guan) is only considered valid if it is present in the month's stem. This pattern favors a strong self (shen wang) and also favors the seal (yin shou).
For example, the Jia wood is considered to have Xin metal as its official star. It prefers to have Wu or Ji earth to generate this official star. It is most afraid of punishment, clash, destruction, and harm, as well as the Yang Blade and seven killers. If these are committed, it is considered a poor destiny. If the seventh killer also appears in the hour stem, it is called a mixture of official and killer stars. Any four pillars that contain punishment, clash, destruction, or harm cannot be considered as noble destiny.
The official star is originally meant to restrain me, but if I use the food and injury stars to restrain the official star instead, it is not necessarily harmful. Even if there is one day master and two official stars, it is still acceptable. However, if there is already a proper official star in the month pillar and another biased official star appears in the hour pillar's stem or branch, it becomes difficult to treat it purely as a proper official star pattern.
For example, Jia wood takes Xin metal as its official star. If it is born after the autumn equinox in the eighth month, when metal is at its peak in You, then it can be considered a true official star. If the heavenly stem does not show Xin, but the earthly branches contain the triple harmony of Si, You, and Chou forming a metal trinity, then even if it is not born after the autumn equinox, it can still be considered an official star. What is important is that the body is strong, and the hour falls in the prosperous and strong period of Jia wood.
If the heavenly stem of the year pillar or the hour pillar reveals the official star, and the earthly branches form an official pattern, then there is no need to be strict about whether the person was born after the beginning of autumn. Generally, the official star needs to be supported by the seal star and the day master should be strong, in order to achieve success. As long as there is no official star to destroy the seal star, and the day master is not weak, it is a noble destiny. If the destiny contains the official star, but encounters the official star's bad fortune, it will not be auspicious; one must wait until the seal star's fortune or the official star's strong fortune to achieve success, and it will certainly result in an official position.
The true official must be sought within the month's stem. As long as it is not broken or harmed, the noble aura will continue unceasingly. Such a person rides a fine horse with jade-rein and gold saddle, indicating real wealth and prosperity. When going out, two rows of banners and military standards accompany him, leading directly to the capital to take office.
The official star representing pure and correct energy should be sought from the month's stem. It is most unusual if it is not conflicting or damaged. When reaching middle age, if the flow year and big destiny cycle come to assist, one can attain the positions of prime ministers and dukes.
A person with the official star pattern possesses benevolence and virtue, has a pure character, and can establish themselves through literary achievements in the Ciguan. If the official star and the seal star mutually generate, and they encounter a powerful year and destiny, they can attain high positions in the Jade Hall and Golden Horse, becoming important ministers of the court.
The official aspect pattern generally requires the day's stem to be strong. If the energy is weak, it needs to reach a prosperous place through the big years. If the flow year and big year meet the growth and prosperity positions again, and there is no conflict or destruction, then it is a prosperous and flourishing destiny.
Taking Ji Tu as the day master, if the heavenly stem reveals Jia Mu as an official star, it is necessary to see Bing or Ding Huo in the month's stem. Fire both generates the Ji Tu body and transforms the Jia Mu official. If the pattern develops along the path of metal and water generating each other, it falls into a lower grade; only with fire to restrain and gather the situation can wealth and fame flourish.
The day master is Xin metal, with the heavenly stem丙 fire appearing in the sky and the month stem encountering寅. 丙 is the proper official of Xin, and in寅, 丙 fire gets its growth. 丙 and Xin combine to form water, thus forming the basis for wealth. At this time, the official star should not appear again. If the fortune meets a conflicting or injurious influence, it is most dangerous to reach the directions of You and Shen.
One born in the eighth month, under the酉 (You) metal sign, and taking the official star as the useful element, should have a pure and proper name; this pattern is most afraid of encountering the卯 (Mao) and丁 (Ding). The卯 (Mao) conflicts with酉 (You), and the丁 (Ding) fire overcomes the metal. If both of theseHostile God (hostile gods) can be removed from the four pillars, and the fortune also avoids them, then one can achieve high status and fame.
