On the Partial Official Star
Charting guides: BaZi Chart Calculator
The term "biased official" refers to cases such as Jia wood encountering Geng metal: a yang heavenly stem encountering another yang heavenly stem, or a yin heavenly stem encountering another yin heavenly stem. When the same type of heavenly stem meets, they mutually control each other but cannot form a harmonious relationship, hence it is called biased official. As the classic text states, "Two women cannot live in the same room, and two men cannot be in the same hall." When people of the same gender meet, there is no feeling of compatibility.
A偏官 is the seven killing stars, which must be controlled by something. The seven killing stars, like petty people, are ignorant and often violent, without any restraint. Yet these petty people are also willing to work for the virtuous and serve and protect them. However, if they are not punished or controlled, they cannot be tamed or used. Therefore, Yangzi said: if controlled properly, they will be tamed and obedient; if controlled improperly, they will become cunning and turn into enemies. The nature of petty people is cunning, and it all depends on whether they are properly controlled. Once control is lost, and they gain power, calamity will immediately follow.
The classics say: A person's destiny with a biased official is like sleeping with a tiger in arms. Although it may borrow its power to subdue all other creatures, as long as there is a slight negligence in prevention, it will certainly be bitten and regretted afterwards, which should not be overlooked. If it is further combined with all three punishments, the Yang blade falling on the day pillar and hour pillar, and the six harms, along with the conflict of the魁罡, the dangers of such a person are endless.
The divine power that controls and subdues the seven deadly stars is properly positioned, and when the fortune moves to a place where it can control and subdue the seven deadly stars, this is a very prosperous destiny. Conversely, if, as mentioned before, evil spirits gather together, and the fortune moves to a place where the seven deadly stars are strong, the harm and misfortune will be great, and it is obvious without needing further explanation.
If there is only one seven killer, but several controlling deities, and the fortune moves to the place of control, it may not bring good fortune. Why? Because when the method is used to its limit, it is as if there is no method at all: the seven killer is controlled so thoroughly that even if it was originally fierce like a jackal, it can no longer exert any power. This shows that we cannot simply focus on controlling. We must find the right balance, neither too much nor too little. By carefully examining and deducing, misfortune and good fortune will appear as surely as a shadow follows a form or an echo follows a sound.
It also says that those that are controlled are called "pian guan," while those that are not controlled are called "qi sha"; just as dealing with petty people, if managed properly they can be used, but if mishandled they become difficult to resist. It all depends on the skill of the one in control.
Whenever one sees the Seven Killers, one should not immediately say it is凶 (malevolent). It is well known that those who have the Seven Killers often have noble destinies. If they encounter the Three Punishments or the Six Harmful Influences, or if the Yang Blade or the魁罡 (Kui Gang) clash, these ominous signs cannot be considered as being subdued; however, as long as their fortune moves to a place that subdues these influences, they are still destined to be noble. If indeed, as previously mentioned,Inauspicious Spirit (malevolent deities) gather together, and their fortune also moves to the旺乡 (prosperous land) of the Seven Killers, the calamity would be unbearable.
In general, the偏官 seven杀 is most favorable when the body is strong, and it is controlled by something from the east or west, which is considered excellent. If the original chart already has control over it, then one should go to a direction where seven杀 is strong; if the original chart does not have control, then one should go to a path that can control it. If the body is strong and can transform the seven杀, it becomes a偏官; if the body is weak and there is no control, it becomes a seven杀. If the original chart already has control and the fortune path also goes to a place of control, the two together will suppress the偏官 completely, leaving not even a trace.
In the month's command, the qi is most afraid of being clashed with and also afraid of the Yang Blade. If the day's main element is weak and the seven killing stars are strong, it is difficult to control them. But if the day's main element is strong and the seven killing stars are weak, then the seven killing stars are used to enhance authority, and both the blade and the killing stars are transformed into personal authority. Some people say that the seven killing stars are not afraid of clashes and punishments, but this statement needs careful consideration.
The biased official is like a fierce tiger, which fears too much conflict. As long as the fortune is prosperous and the main body is strong, it cannot harm me. If the main body is weak and the tiger is strong, it becomes a disaster. If the main body is strong and there is control, its value lies in achieving harmony.
The pair of偏官 and 偏印 is the most difficult to distinguish clearly. If the heavenly stems and earthly branches interact with each other in a way that the official star generates the seal star, and the seal star in turn generates the self, then there will be benefit and reputation. If the wealth star is located in the four earthy branches of 辰, 戌, 丑, and 未, it is favorable to move towards noble positions. Such a person can easily ascend to high office and become a minister or high-ranking official.
For a day master of Wu or Ji earth, if the heavenly stem of Jia or Yi (officials) appears, and metal and water are also present in the chart, it forms a situation where water is excessive and earth becomes cold. If there was originally fire present at birth, it is favorable to have more fire to warm the chart and support the self. Once the fire energy diminishes, there is worry about metal draining the earth, and even more so about wood overcoming the earth and harming the self.
If a person has a biased official star (偏官) that is controlled by food or injury stars (食伤), it transforms into authority, allowing them to achieve success at a young age. If their big year and destiny cycle further lead them to a strong position, they will have great achievements in fame and fortune, with both blessings and good fortune.
A biased official cannot be generally considered aInauspicious Spirit. As long as it is controlled, it can still bring abundant wealth and sustenance. If there is a food god in the heavenly stem to control the killer and a combination in the earthly branch to restrain it, then the descendants will be numerous and the blessings endless.
Gui water is yin in nature, and when it meets Ji earth often gets subdued, for Ji earth is the seven killer of Gui water. This killer star must be subdued by wood. Such a destiny may achieve fame and fortune, but the person's lifespan is generally short.
For a person born on a Bing fire day ruler, if they are born in a place with a lot of water, the water becomes their seven杀 (seventh killer). However, water also nourishes wood, and wood in turn nourishes fire, so the seven杀 is restrained by the印 (printing), turning into a harmonious situation. When their fortune moves towards the eastern wood land, fame and fortune flourish. But when they go to the western metal land, they face difficulties in all matters.
In the spring season, the wood element needs the metal to trim it in order to form extraordinary shapes; however, if there is too much metal, it may cause harm instead. The key is to achieve a balance within the overall structure, so that one can enjoy health, longevity, and smooth success in all affairs.
On the Seven Killers
The term "seven killing stars" is also called "biased official." It is favorable when the self is strong, when something comes to harmonize with this killing star, when the food and injury stars control it, and when the Yang blade is in harmony with it. It is unfavorable when the self is weak, when wealth stars appear (as wealth can generate the killing star), and most unfavorable when there is no control at all. When the self is strong and the killing star is active, it is called "biased official." When the self is weak and the killing star is not controlled, it is called "seven killing stars."
If a person's destiny includes seven killers, how can we say it is bad at first glance? A proper official is not as good as an irregular official. People with seven killers may often become very wealthy and highly esteemed. However, it is only good when the body is strong and the killer is restrained. For example, if jia wood takes geng metal as the seven killer, it prefers bing and ding fire to control it. If yi wood combines with geng metal, it is called 'greed for combination and forget the killer'—geng metal is greedy for combining with yi wood and thus does not attack jia wood.
The seven killing star is suitable for being restrained, but it should not be restrained too much; because when things reach an extreme, they turn into misfortune. For someone with a strong destiny, going through another strong destiny period brings good fortune; but for someone with a weak destiny, encountering another weak destiny place brings misfortune quickly.
In the four pillars, if there is already a controlling god, it is actually favorable to encounter the seven killing stars in one's destiny; but if there is no controlling god, the appearance of the seven killing stars immediately brings disaster. If one's destiny includes a strong body and also carries the Yang Blade, then the noble destiny is boundless; however, one should beware of excessive wealth stars, as wealth can generate the seven killing stars. When the wealth star is strong and affects one's destiny, those with a strong body still face many troubles, and those with a weak body will suffer even more.
The seven day pillars Jiashen, Yiyou, Dingchou, Wuyin, Jimao, Xinwei, and Guiwei all have the day master sitting with a killer. These people are quick-tempered, intelligent, and clever. If there are too many killers, it leads to misfortune, early death, and poverty. When the killer appears in the month pillar, its influence is strong, but when it appears in the hour pillar, its influence is weak. Why? When the killer is present under the day pillar, only one is considered sufficient. If the killer appears again in the year or hour pillar, having too many killers becomes a disaster. At this time, one must go to the place that controls the killer, and the body must be strong with control over the killer, so that the killer can be transformed into authority. The greatest fear is conflict, and also the presence of the Yang Blade together, which leads to great misfortune.
The seven deadly stars in the hour position are suitable only when there is one, and the day's main stem must be strong and vigorous. If there are controlling and restraining elements in the year, month, and hour positions, then it brings good fortune. In such a case, one can even benefit from a period of strong seven deadly stars, and if the three elements form a harmonious structure in the big picture, it is also possible to achieve success. However, if the original chart lacks such controlling elements, one must go through a period of control and restraint to gain fortune. If one goes through a period of strong seven deadly stars without any control, misfortune will immediately occur. As for the seven deadly stars in the hour position, they are not afraid of the Yang blade, nor do they fear punishment and clash.
For example, a birth onXinchou year, Yiwei month, Yimao day, and Bingzi hour: the day's ruler is strong, born in the sixth month. The heavenly stem of the year, Xin Metal, is visible and for Yi Wood is a seven killer. Fortunately, the heavenly stem of the hour, Bing Fire, combines with Xin Metal, thus neutralizing the killer. Therefore, this person is both noble and holds power.
For example, a person born in the year Jiawu, month Bingyin, day Gengzi, and hour Bingzi: the day's main element is weak. The earth branches Yin and Wu form a fire trinity, and the month has Bing fire as the seven killer. The hour also has Bing fire. Fire is attacking the Geng metal, and Geng metal is dead in Zi. The body is weak while the killer is strong, and there is no control. That's why this person is likely to be sickly and poor all his life.
For example, in a birth chart with Dingsi year, Wushen month, Renzi day, and Wushen hour: the day stem is strong. There are two Wu earths, which are seven killers. The killing energy is directed to the year's branch, Si. The year's stem, Ding, combines with the day's stem, Ren, and Wu earth combines with the hidden癸water in the Zi branch. Metal is born in Si, and Wu earth's strength is also in Si. Thus, the Ren water and Wu earth are both strong, and the strength of the day stem and the killing energy are balanced, making it a noble destiny.
Discussing the excessive presence of official stars
For example, if someone is born on a day with the water element壬 or癸, and all the branches in the four pillars are辰, 戌, 丑, 未, or巳, 午, and there is no official star or seven killers revealed in the heavenly stems, then the official stars and seven killers are hidden in these earth branches in large amounts. If the original four pillars already have something to control or restrain them, it is good. If there is no such control, then one needs to go through a wood destiny to release the earth and control the earth, or to form a triple harmony with wood, which is also good.
In general, when the official star appears too frequently, it becomes chaotic. It is essential to eliminate the excess and retain a pure and clear one in order to generate blessings. If the official star is already numerous and the fortune path further emphasizes the official star, it will be of no help.
When both official stars and killing stars are present together, they should be controlled and subdued.
Official stars should be pure and not mixed. For example, for Jia wood, the proper official star is Xin metal. If the heavenly stem of the year is Xin, the earthly branch of the month is You, and the time also has this kind of official star, even if there are many, it is still acceptable because they are all the same and still considered good. However, if there is a mixture of Geng metal or Shen metal, it becomes mixed with seven killers, which actually harms the self. In such a case, one needs to go through a fire place to control it, then good fortune can be realized. Other situations are also judged in the same way.
On the Seal (印綬)
What is called "印" (seal)? The one that generates me is the seal. The classics say: having an official position but no seal does not count as a true official position; having a seal but no official position, on the contrary, can actually bring about good fortune. Why is this so? Basically, in life, if a person has something that helps, nurtures, and supports them, allowing them to enjoy the benefits of all things without effort, is not that a wonderful thing? Therefore, people with the seal pattern often have intelligence and are wealthy.
The印綬 (official seal) is afraid of wealth. When wealth appears, it is like a bag being pierced, making it impossible to use. Therefore, in the four pillars or during a person's life journey, encountering officials and nobles becomes a blessing, because officials and ghosts can generate the印綬, and the印綬 in turn can generate me. The印綬 fears the wealth star. When wealth comes, it turns around and harms my印綬.
Those who skillfully use the印綬 (imperial seal) in divination are mostly people who inherit their parents' blessings and inherit their ancestors' wealth, enjoying things as they are. If comparing two or three birth charts, the one with more印綬 is considered superior.
The official star also indicates good health throughout life, with the ability to eat and drink well. If the wealth star is numerous and strong, there will inevitably be many obstacles and delays. Although the official star prefers the official ghost to generate it, if there are too many official ghosts, or if another pattern is present, it cannot be judged solely based on the official star.
For example, if the day master is Jia or Yi Wood born in the month of Hai or Zi Water, or if the day master is Bing or Ding Fire born in the month of Yin or Mao Wood, or if the day master is Wu or Ji Earth born in the month of Chen or Wu Fire, or if the day master is Geng or Xin Metal born in the month of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei Earth, or if the day master is Ren or Gui Water born in the month of Shen or You Metal, these are all cases of the birth month generating the self, known as the nourishing and supporting pattern. Other cases follow the same principle. This pattern is most afraid of encountering the dead or extinct period of the nourishing and supporting element in one's fortune; if the fortune reaches the dead or extinct period and there is also a wealth star or similar element secretly stealing away the nourishing and supporting element, then it will lead to a grave situation, which is certain.
The term "print" refers to the god that generates me, also known as "life qi." When a yang heavenly stem is born by a yin heavenly stem or a yin heavenly stem is born by a yang heavenly stem, it is called "true print." When a yang heavenly stem is born by another yang heavenly stem or a yin heavenly stem is born by another yin heavenly stem, it is called "biased print." This pattern favors the presence of official stars to support the print and dislikes wealth stars that destroy the print.
For example, if the day stem is Jia Wood and the person is born in the Hai or Zi month, water is its official. At this time, it is undesirable to have Bing or Ding Fire as the official's son, as they will drain the strength of the day stem and obscure the official. It is also undesirable to have Wu or Ji Earth to overcome water and destroy the official. One should go through the land where the official is strong and flourishing, and avoid the land where the official is weak or dying. If one has already gone to the land where the official is weak or dying, and there is also something to harm it, then it is dangerous.
People with the印綬 pattern are intelligent and thoughtful, have few illnesses, enjoy sufficient and rich food, and can enjoy existing wealth and official positions. If comparing two or three birth charts, one should choose the one with the most印綬. It is most忌 to have the wealth star (财星) coming in a strong state, as this will cause obstacles. If there are too many official stars (官鬼) or if another pattern is present, then one should not judge solely based on the印綬 pattern.
In general, the best situation is when the official star (印綬) appears in the month pillar or the hour pillar, with the month pillar being especially important. First consider the month's energy: if after the month's energy there is a source that generates me, it indicates support from parents; if there is life qi in the year pillar, it indicates support from ancestors; if there is life qi in the hour pillar, it indicates support from descendants, leading to a long life and a comfortable later life.
If a person's destiny includes the official star and the seal, it is called "official and seal both present," which indicates a noble fate. Even if the official star is merely present, with the support of parents, the fortune is still deep. When the official star's period comes, success is achieved; when the seal's period comes, success is also achieved.
If the official star is used as the main element but does not show success, then using the seal star as the main element is better. The worst situation is when the four pillars or the flow of the year and big luck lead to the wealth area, which harms the seal star. Once the seal star is harmed, it indicates the destruction of the family, leaving the ancestral home, and marrying into another family. If it also occurs in the dead or exhausted position, it either leads to demotion or loss of position, or short life.
For example, a birth chart with the year Wuxu, month Gengshen, day Guiyou, and hour Gengshen: the day stem Gui water is born after the middle of the seventh month. The month pillar and hour pillar are both Gengshen, and the day stem is seated in the metal-rich酉 (You) position, thus forming the official official (印綬) pattern. The year stem also reveals Wutu, the official star, which is called 'official and official both present' (官印两全), indicating an extremely prosperous destiny.
For example, a birth chart with the year Guihai, month Guihai, day Jiayin, and hour Jiazi: the person's destiny is based on Jia wood as the main element. The Yin water serves as the official, which is extremely strong. However, since there is no wealth element in the chart to match, the flow of energy is blocked, so the blessings received are not deep or substantial.
For example, a person born in the year Jiayin, month Gengwu, day Wuxu, and hour Renzi: This person has a Wutu day master, with Dinghuo as the official. The earth branches also form a fire trinity with Yin, Wu, and Xu, which is a good sign. Unfortunately, the water of Renzi in the hour is strong, and water is the wealth for Wutu. The wealth clashes and controls the fire official, causing the person to lose their sight. The original source of my energy is Bingding fire, which is generated by wood. When the official is damaged, the person loses their vision.
For example, a person born in the year of Ji Mao, month of Ding Miao, day of Bing Chen, and hour of Ren Chen: the day's ruler is Bing fire, which takes Miao wood as its official seal and the hidden癸 water in Chen as its proper official. The year branch is Miao and the day branch is Chen, so both official and seal are present, hence in youth he holds a clear and important position. At the age of forty-two or forty-three, when entering the Gui Hai decade, it is still acceptable. However, when encountering the Geng Shen year, the seven killing water (壬 water) is in growth in Shen, and the Geng Shen metal attacks and breaks the Miao wood seal, thus it is not auspicious.
When the Moon's ruler meets the印綬 in the birth chart, it is favorable to have the official star to generate it; when the fortune enters the official's territory, the blessings will be pure. If the fortune reaches the dead or exhausted place of the印綬, it is unfavorable for the person; afterwards, if the fortune moves to the wealth territory to damage the印綬, then nothing will be accomplished.
The combination of the official star and the seal star is harmonious and pure; even if one meets several biased officials, they can still use them to generate the seal star, leading to a period of vitality. However, once one reaches a dead or exhausted position and then enters a wealth position, without any rescue, one may end up dying.
Those who receive official positions without suffering losses enjoy the benefits of fertile land. Holding office is due to ancestral blessings, with family possessing their own fields and gardens. The family hall receives imperial decrees, the granary is full of grain, and daily expenses amount to thousands of coins.
Those who do not suffer losses in official positions rely entirely on the remaining blessings of their ancestors; their family residence and property are prosperous, shining brightly and upholding the family's reputation. If during their life cycle and major fortune periods they encounter a strong official star, they will achieve both wealth and status, like entering the moon palace to pick the ginkgo fruit.
When the lunar month supports the day master, this is known as the official seal pattern. It is most favorable to have an official star to match. When the fortune progresses into the official's territory, the official position will certainly be honorable and prestigious. Such people have a dignified appearance, abundant wealth, and hold high official positions in the court, reaching the rank of marquises and ministers.
The qi that nourishes me is abundant and layered, yet within the chart there is no official star. This should be regarded as a person with refined skills. Without the arrival of official stars orrestrain, there will be no rank or salary; even with exceptional talent, one will inevitably remain isolated and simple in lifestyle.
The pattern of repeated official stars appears peculiar, yet one must carefully examine both the heavenly stems and earthly branches. If the earthly branches contain Xianchi and the heavenly stems contain a harmonious combination, then it indicates a reckless and extravagant son who indulges in pleasures.
When the official seal (印綬) is naturally and properly matched with the heavenly stems and earthly branches, one will achieve fame and success, become wealthy, and attain high official rank. However, if the fortune of wealth comes to harm the official seal, it is advisable to resign from office early to avoid bringing calamity.
A person with multiple official stars (印綬) could enjoy things effortlessly, but fear that the food star (食神) secretly conflicts and competes with it — too many official stars will take away the food star, blocking the path of revealing talent. Such a person, if not dying young, will have a lonely and wandering life, plagued by chronic illness.
The day master is丙 or 丁 fire, born in the卯 month, with many official stars and killing stars, which are water. In the four pillars, the day master has no root, and it is most feared to meet another water destiny. The moist wood of卯 month cannot ignite the fire that has no flame. For such a person to achieve success and fame, he must go through a destiny of southern fire.
The印綬 pattern is not suitable when the day master is too strong; if the印 is heavy and the body is strong, even if there are no troubles, it is merely an ordinary fate. Unless the original chart has many official stars and killing stars, and the印 is needed to transform the killing stars and protect the self, then there may be fame and the potential to become a pillar of society.
For a day master of water (Ren and Gui) born in the month of Shen, the metal in Shen (庚金) is its official (印). It is most undesirable for fire to come and overcome the metal, thus breaking the official. If there is earth in the pattern that generates the metal and protects the official, then the noble quality will be evident. If the fortune moves towards the northern water regions, it is favorable. However, if there is a conflict with寅, it is generally not advisable.
When the day master is wood and encounters excessive water from壬 and癸, the wood is floated away and has no root, leading to a life of idleness and wasted time, which is an indication of too much印 (nourishing element) causing the body to be floating. If the big year or destiny period meets a prosperous wealth period, the wealth will control the excess water and印, transforming misfortune into good fortune, and leading to a noble and prestigious status.
"The phrase 'greed for wealth destroys the seal' should not be taken as purely ominous. One must thoroughly understand its underlying meaning. If during one's life journey the wealth star can be removed, it can still bring blessings; however, if one enters into wealth again, one's lifespan may come to an end."
If the印綬 has already passed through the dead and exhausted position, it is afraid of wealth coming to harm it, and also afraid of falling into Kongwang; encountering these situations will surely lead to many calamities—such as drowning, or being burned by fire, or self-inflicted injury.
The pattern of official seal (yin shou) is seen when the heavenly stems are repeated, and if the earthly branches also show many similar stems, then if the fortune moves towards supporting elements, it will surely harm the body, because the official seal and similar stems are too heavy, and there is no way to release or consume them. Do not say this pattern has no remarkable qualities: as long as the fortune moves into the wealth area, removing the excess official seal and similar stems, true happiness and honor will come.
