Charting guides: BaZi Chart Calculator

Wood relies on water for nourishment, but when water becomes excessive, the wood is instead carried away. Metal depends on earth to generate and support it, but when earth becomes too thick, the metal is buried and hidden. Therefore, the Five Phases must not be imbalanced, and they must possess a moderate and harmonious energy. Those who study命 must eliminate distractions and focus their minds calmly, so that their judgment of a person's destiny will be accurate.

Looking at destiny through the method of divination

The Five Phases are governed by the monthly stem. When analyzing a birth chart, after arranging the eight characters, the day stem is the main focus. The year column is considered the root, representing the ancestral property of the previous generation, from which one can determine the prosperity or decline of the family's lineage. The month column is regarded as the sprout, representing the parents, from which one can determine the presence or absence of support from relatives.

The day stem represents oneself, and the day branch represents wife and concubine, from which one can know if the wife and concubine are virtuous. The time column is like flowers and fruit, representing offspring, from which one can see where the descendants are headed.

According to the rules, one must also distinguish the depth of the monthly energy, determining whether the day's main element is in season or not. If wealth and official positions are revealed in the year or hour pillars, the body strength must be strong enough to support them. If the body is weak but wealth is strong, even though wealth is abundant, it will result in loss of wealth and harm to the spouse.

If the person's strength is strong and there are many riches, and the riches are also strong, the more riches the more contentment and satisfaction. If the chart has neither wealth nor official stars, then the next consideration is whether the seal stars form a particular pattern, and based on that, we judge its fortune or misfortune. Learners should not rigidly follow fixed methods but should understand how to adapt and change according to the situation.

The Eight Methods of Divine Interest

The concept of "classical imagery" refers to the situation where both the heavenly stems and earthly branches belong to the same category. For example, if someone is born in spring, their heavenly stem is Jia or Yi (wood), and their earthly branches include Yin, Mao, and Chen (the three earthy branches that form the spring quarter), with no breaks or interruptions in between. This is called having the unique beauty of the east. The most dangerous situation is when this beauty is led to the dead or exhausted place in the hour column, which is called breaking the beauty. If one travels through such a place again in later years, it will not be auspicious. If the hour column and the year column can guide this beauty towards a place of birth and strength, it is called the beauty coming to meet, which is very perfect. The concept of "related imagery" refers to the heavenly stem being Jia or Yi (wood), and the earthly branches also having Yin, Mao, and Wei (earthly branches that belong to wood) fully present.

The concept of "following the pattern" refers to a situation where the day master, which is the main heavenly stem, has no root in the earthly branches and the branches are entirely of another element. For example, if the day master is wood (Jia or Yi) and there is no root in the earthly branches, but all the branches are metal, this is called "following metal." If the four pillars are entirely earth, it is called "following earth." If they are entirely water, it is called "following water." If they are entirely wood, it is called "following wood." In general, if there is a refined and subtle quality in the pattern that can be released, it is auspicious. If there is no such quality, it is inauspicious. If there is a combination of Jia and Ji in the heavenly stems or if the day master itself has a root, then the "following" is not genuine and is inauspicious. As for "following fire," if the fortune moves to a place of great strength, it is auspicious, but if it moves to a place of decline or extinction, it is inauspicious.

The concept of "huaxiang" refers to the transformation of elements. For someone born on a Jia or Yi day, if they are born in the earth months of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei, and there is a Ji character in the heavenly stem that combines with Jia, this is called "Jia Ji huatu" (Jia and Ji transforming into earth). It is favorable to have a fire element in the fortune to generate the transformed earth. If instead, the person encounters a Jia or Yi wood element in a strong and flourishing phase, the transformation cannot occur, leading to an inauspicious outcome. If another Ji character appears along with two Jia characters competing for the combination, it is called "zhenghe" (competing combination), and if another Yi character appears to disrupt it, it is called "duhuo" (jealous combination). In both cases, the structure is disrupted and the transformation does not take place.

the so-called "lighting up the image," for example, if the day master is Bing fire and the earthly branches include Si, Wu, and Wei fire, and the hour branch also has Mao wood to generate fire, this is called "wood and fire lighting up each other," which is very auspicious. Similarly, if the day master is Ren or Gui water and the earthly branches include Shen, Zi, and Chen water, forming a complete water trinity, and the hour branch also has metal to generate water, this is called "metal and water lighting up each other," which is extremely auspicious. If the god that provides this support appears in the heavenly stem of the year, it is also considered auspicious.

The concept of "returning image" refers to the useful god already present in the month pillar being drawn to the hour pillar and falling into its critical phase, which means using it but being unable to effectively utilize it, known as "returning fortune"; if it returns too strongly, it is not auspicious. The concept of "ghost image" refers to a day master of jia or yi wood born in autumn, whose four earthly branches are entirely metal, and since metal is the ghost of wood, it is called ghost image; this pattern is auspicious if the fortune supports the ghost and strengthens it, but it is feared to encounter the dead or critical phase of the ghost; if the day master instead becomes strong and conflicts with the ghost, it is also not auspicious.

The concept of "hidden image" refers to the situation where the three Earthly Branches 寅, 午, and 戌 form a Triple Harmony of Fire, and the person is born in the month of 午. If the Day Stem is 壬 water and there is no 丁 fire appearing in the Heavenly Stems, and the 壬 water itself has no root, then the hidden 丁 fire within 午 is combined with the 壬 water, thus concealing this 壬 water. This is called a hidden image. When the person's fortune moves to a place with strong wood and fire, it is favorable. However, if the fortune moves to a place with strong water, it becomes unfavorable.

Miscellaneous Rules and Mnemonics

In the method of Zi Ping, the focus is on wealth and official positions, with the wealth and official positions in the month being most important. The manifestation of these elements is revealed through the day and hour, and their strength and weakness must be considered. Sometimes only the official star is considered without being bound by the pattern, and sometimes only the pattern is considered without being bound by the official star. Those who enter the pattern will either be rich or noble; those who do not enter the pattern will either die young or be poor.

Official star fears being harmed by the Harmful Official, and Wealth star fears being taken by the Robber Wealth. When the Seal Star meets Wealth, the more wealth there is, the greater the disaster. When the Harmful Official meets the Official star, various troubles arise; either illness and injury occur, or legal troubles, imprisonment, or loss of children and spouse.

It is the same case of a person with a wounded official encountering an official. If the original chart already has an official star, the consequences are more severe. If there is no official star in the original chart but it appears in the later years, the consequences are lighter. The severe case may lead to exile or relocation, while the lighter case may still avoid no punishment. Such people have crooked hearts, are deceitful and cunning, look down on others with arrogance and high spirits, often believing themselves superior to everyone else. The powerful and respected fear them, while the petty and wicked dislike them.

Wealth comes from the ability to use wealth when there is a Wounding Official, while poverty results from having a Wounding Official accompanied by a Wealth Destroyer. If the Wounding Official appears in the year pillar, wealth and status cannot last long. If it appears in the month pillar, parents are not fully supported. If it appears in the day pillar, wife and concubine are difficult to keep. If it appears in the hour pillar, descendants are not numerous.

If the heavenly stems in the year and month are injurious officials and thieves, the person is born into a poor and humble family. If there is wealth and official power in the day branch and time pillar, they will first be poor and then become wealthy. If there is wealth, official power, and official seal in the year and month, the person is born into a wealthy and noble family. Therefore, if the day pillar and time pillar have injurious officials and thieves, they will first be wealthy and then poor, and they will also harm their children, leading to no blessings in old age.

Therefore, those with a wounded official (shāng guān) encountering an official (guān) or a mix of official and killing stars (guān shā) tend to be lustful and promiscuous, with scattered and cunning behavior, leading to a lowly and despised status. When the ethereal stem 乙 (Yi) is seated on 巳 (Si), which is called 「太乙」; when 乙 is seated on 亥 (Hai), which is called 「登明」: both of these birth days indicate men being lustful and women being promiscuous. If there is wealth in the chart along with a mix of official and killing stars, it is auspicious. But if there is neither wealth nor the seal (imperial) star, it is inauspicious.

As long as both wealth and destiny have strength, even if one is in a poor official position, poverty will not occur; but if wealth has already declined and destiny is weak, even with a strong official position, wealth will not come. Those who have劫财 and败财 tend to have high aspirations but are in a low position, and encountering these two indicates greed. When seven杀 is present and official stars attack from both sides, the person will be pressured in all directions.

Heavenly Stems: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui Earthly Branches: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai Trigrams: Qian (Heaven), Dui (Lake), Li (Fire), Zhen (Thunder), Xun (Wind), Kan (Water), Gen (Mountain), Kun (Earth) The one that restrains me is official star and killing star, indicating honor and status; the one I restrain is wealth, indicating prosperity. The one that nourishes me is the seal, equivalent to relying on the strength of my mother, nurturing my spirit. The one I nourish is food god and injurious star, indicating the leakage of vital energy, and a constant feeling of being pressed or urged in the mind.

If wealth is found in the month pillar, the person is diligent and thrifty, almost stingy. If there are many劫财, 比肩, and The Yang Blade in the four pillars, it indicates harm to the father and wife, and an inability to retain wealth. For those who wander the world performing arts or engage in business, one should look at wealth that is rootless. For those destined to become prime ministers, one should check whether the proper official position is timely and in season.

Those with both seven杀 and枭印 heavy are wanderers who live away from home. Those who have both伤官 and劫财 are people who act against their conscience, defaulting debts and being untrustworthy. Those who have multiple instances of wealth and authority are destined for high status. Those who have multiple instances ofWangshen are prone to early death. Seven杀 should be restrained by something, and only when there is one independent and uncluttered one is it considered strong.

The visible seven killing stars are harmonized away, resulting in the Five Phases being in harmony, like being bathed in spring breeze. However, if the hidden seven killing stars are instead combined out, it will lead to punishments and harm to oneself. The seven killing stars in the hour position prefer to be confronted or accompanied by a Yang Blade; but if there is no control, women may face difficulties in childbirth, and men may be involved in legal troubles. If both Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue remain undamaged, women will certainly be virtuous, and men will mostly be loyal and filial.

In the pattern of Wounding Official (Shang Gan), using the Seal (Yin) as the key element, one should eliminate the Wealth (Cai) star to prevent the Wealth from harming the Seal. Only then can one achieve widespread reputation. In the pattern of Wounding Official using Wealth as the key element, when one reaches the place where Wounding Official is strong, one will experience a period of prosperity. If one enters the pattern and maintains purity and uniqueness, one will become rich. If one is close to the pattern but ultimately fails to fully enter it, one will remain poor.

Those who have only one or two of the heavenly stems and earthly branches in their birth chart may not become officials or prime ministers; but those with three or four, if their wealth and official positions are not pure, are likely to be either government clerks or people of the lower classes. The "Six Yin Facing the Sun" pattern, if born in the months of辰 (Chen), 戌 (Xu), 丑 (Chou), or 未 (Wei), should be considered merely as the印綬 (seal of authority) pattern. Beneficial deities are afraid of being broken or harmed; malevolent deities do not like being punished or conflicting, as one punishment or conflict may actually stir them up.

Those whose destiny includes wealth, officialdom, seal, and food as auspicious deities will certainly display a compassionate and benevolent character. Those whose destiny includes injurious official,劫财, and the Yang Blade will inevitably be known for being harsh and cruel. If the heavenly stems clash without being harmonized, they are wanderers without a fixed place. The "Six Yin Tending Toward Gen" pattern tends toward the寅 position; if born in the month of亥, they will be poor.

A person whoseThe Post-horse falls onKongwang is one who labors mentally and is downcast. If the month pillar is combined, it indicates leaving the ancestral home. If the month pillar is in conflict, it suggests being adopted by another family. If seven杀 is accompanied byThree Punishments, the mother's side is clear while the father's side is obscure, often indicating a secret birth. If the destiny includes wealth, official seal, and偏官 all together, it is certain that the person is a庶出.

The heavenly stems are in a severe mutual control, like Ran BoNiu, a disciple of Confucius, who fell ill with a serious disease and could only lament heavenward. When the day pillar and the hour pillar mutually conflict and injure each other, one is bound to suffer the grief of BoShang losing his son and becoming blind, or Zhuangzi losing his wife and drumming on the coffin while singing. Those with many injuries are unrighteous in their conduct; those with many harmonies may even turn distant people into close ones. However, many harmonies indicate bad luck, while many conflicts indicate danger.

People with many Chén (辰) in their birth chart tend to be quarrelsome, while those with many Xū (戌) are prone to legal disputes. Chén and Xū are also the locations of the Qiu Gāng (魁罡), which are associated with much misfortune and little fortune. If the day pillar or hour pillar falls into Kongwang (空亡), the wife and children are unlikely to be complete or harmonious. When the Yì Mǎ (驛马) signs are conflicting and moving rapidly, one is likely to leave their homeland and travel far away.

The food god (shí shén) is strong in the heavenly stems, more powerful than wealth and officials; when the food god is smooth and not taken away, there will be a square yard of delicacies before him when he eats. If it is taken by the biased seal (piān yìn) and reverse food (dào shí), he will only have a basket of rice and a bowl of bean soup. If the food god is weak and the hawk seal (xiāo yìn) is strong, he will not die but suffer a disaster. If water forms a 'moistening and descending' pattern, his literary achievements will be prominent. If earth forms a 'cultivating and harvesting' pattern, he will become wealthy through commerce. If both metal and water are clear, he is likely to enter the Daoist path. If fire and earth are turbid and unclear, he is likely to become a Buddhist monk.

Those with a destiny involving the hours of Zi and Wu should be most cautious about encountering the hours of Si and Hai again; those with the hours of Mao and You should avoid encountering the hours of Yin and Shen. The earthy element Ji in the hour of Hai is already rootless, and if it encounters the Yin wood element Yi, it will be harmed, leading to a shortened lifespan. However, if the hour of Bingyin is present in the time position, the fire element will generate the earthy element, and the Yin wood will transform into an official star, allowing one to wear a crown and achieve high status and honor. The absolute point of the Five Phases is known as the 'Taiming' or 'Twinning'. If one's birth day coincides with this position, it is called 'Receiving the Breath'.

There are ten days that can form a transformed qi pattern: Jiashen, Yiyou, Gengyin, Xinmao, Renwu, Guiwei, Bingzi, Dingchou, Wuwu, and Jichou. Even if the八字 of these days does not fit into the standard pattern, they can still bring about wealth and honor easily. Moreover, they possess a refined virtue and grace, each receiving the care of heaven and earth deities. When discussing the pattern of transformed qi: if the transformation is genuine, the person will become a prominent official or noble; if the transformation is false, the person may be an orphan or belong to a different clan. The transformed qi pattern changes when encountering the dragon hour of Chen, just as the Zhou Changes (I Ching) says in the Qian hexagram, "A dragon soars in the sky, favorable to meet a great man."

In addition, there are other terms such as 'Winter meets heat', 'Summer grass meets frost', 'Shrew mice dwell by water', and 'Divine turtle resides in fire'. Among these, there are distinctions between those that are compatible and those that are not, making it difficult for later learners to understand. Within a single method, there are three different categories, yet previous sages did not record them. As for discussing patterns, there are already clear established rules. The oral formulas recorded here only briefly mention a few. One must always align with the principles of the sages' classics; anything that does not conform should not be used. In this way, it becomes easier to understand. The principles are endless, and learning has no limits. The classics say: if one can eliminate distractions and concentrate the mind, then discerning human destiny will be accurate without error.

Group Discussion on the Interpretation of the Classics

First, we discuss "when prosperity comes." Some people are born with the fortune of wealth and honor, and they are destined to achieve prosperity and enjoy happiness throughout their lives, maintaining it all along. What is the reason for this? Because in their four pillars, the day's main element is strong and dominant, and the favorable deities they rely on, whether wealth, officialdom, education, or food, each carries a禄 and authority, appearing at the right time, neither biased nor mixed. Moreover, there are no conflicts, clashes, injuries, damages, or harmful influences disturbing them. This is the pure and unadulterated source of wealth and honor.

Such a person will later achieve talent, expand the legacy of their ancestors, and attain success in their time. They will not attract slander or harm. Moreover, their fortune progresses step by step with auspicious signs, making their four pillars even more favorable. This is called "the source is clear, then the stream is clean." Therefore, they enjoy blessings surpassing ordinary people, can hold onto their gains without regret. All of this is due to the continuous flow of fate and fortune, with prosperity never ceasing. This is not by chance, but by destiny. How can we not carefully distinguish it?

Now talking about "rising to prominence." Some people are born into poverty and hardship, suffering from hunger and loneliness, living in turmoil and disorder. Yet unexpectedly, one day their fortune turns, and they suddenly rise to success: either they start from nothing and achieve prosperity in business, establishing estates and wealth; or they assist a ruler, benefiting the people, and stand alone in the position of prime minister. Such people are as different before and after as night and day. Why is this so?

That is because in the four pillars the day stem's life qi is originally not strong, yet the chosen useful gods are all in proper positions and strong, and also qualified. Unfortunately, the day stem is too weak to bear such fortune, so in early years he can only endure hardship and be frustrated without opportunity. Suddenly, when a major fortunate period comes to support him, the day stem becomes strong, and the useful gods then roar like tigers and generate wind; the original useful gods in his birth chart are then truly useful to him, and he rides upon them to rise suddenly. This is when the deficient qi is harmonized and the weak body meets a prosperous period, so he can rise with the auspicious qi. As for the difference in the scale of achievements, it should be judged according to the weight of the destiny pattern each person is endowed with.

Now talking about "Juxing" (rising and flourishing). If the day's stem is strong, and in the four pillars the seven killing stars are pure and not mixed with other elements, and both the body and the seven killing stars are strong, but the original chart has no element to control or restrain the seven killing stars, then wealth and honor cannot be achieved. Only when the big luck period brings in the controlling element, the seven killing stars will transform into power, and thus rise suddenly, causing great achievements that attract the attention of officials and ministers, achieving fame and distinction, standing out from the crowd. This is because the body is strong, and the seven killing stars, when controlled, turn into power; the element that controls the seven killing stars is also strong, thus bringing extraordinary blessings. How could such a person not achieve success and eventually reach the highest position in the court? This is indeed something inherent in one's fate. However, it still requires the help of good fortune to be realized. If the good fortune does not come, one would remain an ordinary person.

It is also necessary that in the four pillars the day master is strong and the useful god is also strong, with both sides in balanced measure. This is the good fortune of a noble family's son in a wealthy household. When he grows up and his family's business flourishes, if a major bad fortune comes along in the form of a great evil star in the big year, it will cause trouble. The stars that take my wealth will take it away, the stars that represent my official position will harm me, the stars that represent my seal will destroy me, and the stars that represent my food god will damage me. When such a fortune comes, there are endless misfortunes, so the person will suffer a downfall in middle age. However, once the bad fortune passes, if a good fortune comes to support him, making the useful god shine anew, it is like a dry seedling receiving rain and suddenly flourishing; or like a feather encountering the wind and rising suddenly, no one can stop it.

Now talking about 'middle prosperity'. Some people have strong Five Phases in their birth charts, with the Yang Blade and the same heavenly stem competing for dominance. However, the wealth and official positions, which are essential for forming a successful pattern, are weak and lack strength to achieve fame and success. When they go out into the world and encounter different phases in their life, these are not favorable conditions, so they live a life of hunger and cold, toil and hardship, with aspirations but no achievements. Some may, in their middle or later years, suddenly encounter a seven killer phase, using this seven killer as a means of power to subdue the Yang Blade: either they may gain authority and recognition, or they may attract wealth and become prosperous. This must be judged according to the clarity or turbidity of the Five Phases and the specific phases they encounter.

Finally, it is said 'ending with prosperity'. This refers to a life of poverty and hardship, suddenly achieving success in middle age or later in life. From this we can see that such a destiny originally relies on wealth and official positions for success, but throughout life, there has been no strength in wealth or official positions. Only when the right fortune arrives does one achieve wealth and honor, with everything flourishing and beneficial. Therefore, 'ending with prosperity' is entirely due to the right fortune. How can scholars not strive to understand this principle thoroughly?
