Solitary and quiet, the mind hums and ponders; who believes the stringless emits a wondrous sound?

The Master said: "Sitting opposite on a tray, the bow falls into the cup." He said: "What sort of person is one without doubt?" The Master said: "Sitting again on a tray, the bow falls into the cup." He asked: "What is it like when wind is calm and waves are still?" The Master said: "At the top of a hundred-zhang pole, five liang hang down." When the Master was about to accord with the world, a monk asked: "After a hundred years, who will carry away the bowl bag?" The Master said: "Let whoever will carry it away." Chan Master Yinwei of the Great Tranquility Cloister in Hongzhou was a man of Xingan in Yuzhang. His surname was Yang. On the night of his birth, there was a light that pierced through the room. At the age of seven, he left home under Chan Master Daojian of Shitou Cloister in his native district. At twenty, he received full ordination from Vinaya Master Zhicheng at Kaiyuan Temple. He visited masters of the tradition one after another and arrived at Luoshan. Great Master Fabao guided him with the essentials of the lion in its den and leaving the den. Because of this he became awakened and lingered there for several years. Then he returned to Jiangbiao. It happened that Li Mengjun, the magistrate of Longquan district, invited him to reside at the Shishan Daochang. There he first proclaimed the essentials of the tradition. When the Master entered the hall, he said to the assembly: 'Is there anyone who can leap into the air? Come forward.' No one in the assembly came forward. The Master spoke a verse:
騰空正是時應須眨上眉
Leaping into the air is exactly the time; one should blink the eyes upward.
From here one goes beyond the crowd; do not wait to be a white-headed child.

Chan Master Deqian of Mingzhao in Wuzhou. He received the seal of Luoshan and did not stagnate in one corner. He roused and spread the profound purport; all the elders feared his nimbleness, and later students rarely dared to confront his edge. The Master was in the Great Hall of Zhaoqing in Quanzhou. Pointing with his finger at a wall painting, he asked a monk, "What spirit is that?" The monk said, "A good spirit who protects the Dharma." The Master said, "When the great persecution came, where did he go?" The monk had no reply. The Master then sent the monk to ask Attendant Yan. Yan said, "In what kalpa did you meet with this calamity?" The monk returned and related this to the Master. The Master said, "Even if Upadhyaya Yan later gathers a thousand followers, what use is it?" The monk then bowed and requested an alternative phrase. The Master said, "Where has he gone?" Qing of the Eight Routes brought up Yangshan's inserting-the-spade story and asked the Master, "Did the ancients' intent lie in the clasping of hands, or did the intent lie in the inserting of the spade?" The Master said, "Upadhyaya Qing." Qing responded. The Master said, "Have you ever dreamed of Yangshan?" Qing said, "Do not give a phrase; I only want the Upadhyaya to discuss it." The Master said, "If you want to discuss it, the hall chief himself has an old teacher with one thousand five hundred people." The Master arrived at Shuangyan. When the elder of Shuangyan saw the Master's manner and bearing, he said, "I shall put one question to you, Acarya. If you can speak it, I will give up the monastery; if you cannot speak it, I will not give it up. The Diamond Sutra says, 'All Buddhas and all the Dharmas of the Buddhas all come forth from this sutra.' Now tell me: who spoke this sutra?" The Master said, "Speaking and not speaking, I pick them up together and put them over there. Just what does the Reverend definitively call this sutra?" Shuangyan had no reply. The Master brought up the sutra and said, "All worthies and sages are differentiated by the unconditioned Dharma. This takes the unconditioned Dharma as the ultimate standard. On what basis are there then differences? Just tell me: are differences a fault or not a fault? If they are a fault, then all worthies and sages entirely have faults. If they are not a fault, then definitively what do you call differences?" Shuangyan was also speechless. The Master said, "What Xuefeng said." The Master was dwelling as the first seat at Zhizhe Temple in Wuzhou. Ordinarily he would not accept pure water. The monk in charge of affairs asked, "Why do you not acknowledge contact and refuse to accept pure water?" The Master got down from his seat, picked up the pure bottle, and said, "This is pure." The monk in charge was speechless. The Master then smashed the pure bottle. From that time his fame spread far. The assembly invited him to reside at Mingzhao Mountain and open the teaching. Chan practitioners who came from all directions filled the hall and chambers. The Master said to the assembly, "Rarely does one meet someone who, at the downhill slope, does not go; when swift convenience is hard to encounter. If there are those who live together and die together, what harm is there in one unfolding?" A monk asked, "When the lion first comes out of its den, how is it?" The Master said, "A swift sparrow hawk cannot catch up." He said, "After coming out of the den, how is it?" The Master said, "Ten thousand li are in profuse disorder." He said, "When about to come out and not yet coming out, how is it?" The Master said, "Dangerous." He said, "How is the matter beyond?" The Master said, "A blink." He asked, "What is the one phrase that penetrates beyond the Dharma body?" The Master said, "Turn over behind the Northern Dipper." He asked, "How should one orient oneself throughout the twelve hours?" The Master said, "Throw it down on the diamond ground." He asked, "What did Manjushri and Vimalakirti talk about face to face?" The Master said, "The kudzu cloth scarf and black gauze cap have already been picked up and put over there." He asked, "What is the Reverend's family style?" The Master said, "One who can bite it is a good hand." (The base text has '齩'.) He asked, "The fire without smoke—who can face it?" The Master said, "One who does not begrudge his eyebrows." He said, "Can the Reverend face it?"
(The Master continued speaking:) "Tell me, how many stalks of eyebrows do I have?" The Master saw a newly arrived monk had just entered the Dharma Hall. He then raised his whisk and immediately threw it down. That monk, after making a gesture of respect, went down. The Master said, "An adept, an adept." Someone asked, "What is it like when the whole body wears a sword?" The Master said, "If you suddenly encounter exactly such a moment, then what?" The monk had no reply. The Master asked Elder Guotai Tao, "The ancients said that Juzhi merely recited three lines of mantra and thereby attained a name surpassing everyone. How would you take away those three lines of mantra from him and yet still have him attain a name surpassing everyone?" Guotai raised one finger. The Master said, "If not for today, how could one recognize the guest of Guazhou?" The Master had a junior uncle in the Xieyuan office who was gravely ill. A letter was attached and sent to ask, saying, "I have this great illness. Now I am truly suffering pain. I cannot be settled anywhere. Is there anyone who can save me?" The Master then replied by letter, saying, "A diamond arrow has struck the crown of your head and passed through to the other side." There was a monk who had once been in the Master's Dharma seat. He took leave to live in a hut for one year. Later he came to bow and said, "The ancients said, 'If three days pass without meeting, do not look upon one as before.'" The Master then exposed his chest and asked, "Tell me, how many stalks of gall-covering hair do I have?" The monk had no reply. The Master then asked, "When did you leave the hut?" He said, "This morning." The Master said, "The broken-legged cauldron you had when you came, to whom did you hand it over?" Again the monk had no words. The Master then shouted him out. Someone asked, "It is said that the Master has said, 'I dwell on the summit of Mingzhao and promote the transmission of the ancient Buddhas' mind.' What is the summit of Mingzhao?" The Master said, "Change your eyes." He asked, "What is the ancient Buddhas' mind?" The Master said, "Are you still short of breath?" Someone asked, "A student comes up grasping clouds and seizing waves, and asks the Master to unfold his bowl." The Master said, "I will press through the top of your head." He said, "Then one must go to Xianduo." The Master then drove him out with a staff. The Master has a separate verse. His instruction to the assembly said:
明招一拍和人希此是真宗上妙機
Mingzhao's single clap—those who harmonize with it are rare; this is the true school's supreme wondrous mechanism.
Flint sparks flash—where do they go? The dawn-born phoenix chick should surely know.
The Master dwelt on Mingzhao Mountain for forty years. His phrases spread throughout the various regions. When he was about to pass away, he ascended the hall, informed the assembly, and entrusted them. That night he stretched out his feet and asked the attendant, saying, "Formerly Shakyamuni Tathagata stretched out both feet and emitted a hundred treasures' light. Tell me, how much do I emit today?" The attendant said, "Formerly the Crane Grove, today the Master." The Master brushed his eyebrows with his hand and said, "Do not be ungrateful." He also spoke a verse, saying:
驀刀叢裡逞全威汝等應當善護持
Suddenly in the thicket of blades he displays full authority; you all should carefully protect and uphold it.
In the fire, the iron ox gives birth to a calf; at the crossroads, who understands how to match my mechanism?
When the verse was finished, he sat peacefully, became still, and passed away for a long time. Today the stupa courtyard still exists.

He asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddhadharma?" The Master said, "Verify." He asked, "What was it like before Niutou saw the Fourth Patriarch?" The Master said, "Free and at ease." The Master said, "Agreed." He asked, "Students have just entered the monastery. The ancestral teachers' exact meaning—please, Master, point it out directly." The Master said, "Good."

Chan Master Huì of Xichuan first studied under Luoshan (see the Luoshan chapter in volume seventeen). Luoshan asked, "Where do you come from?" The master said, "Having long left Western Shu, I recently set out from Kaiyuan. As for the matter right now, how is it?" Luoshan bowed with hands clasped and said, "Go eat tea." The master was silent for a long while. Luoshan said, "The autumn air is slightly warm; go." The next day Luoshan ascended the hall. The master came forward and asked, "Who is the one who opens wide the door and window and stands before the railing?" Luoshan then shouted. The master was silent for a long while. Luoshan said, "Your feathers are not yet complete; go for now." (One version says: He first studied under Luoshan. He had just bowed and risen when Luoshan said, "Where have you come from?" The master said, "Having long left Western Shu, I recently set out from Kaiyuan." Then he stepped forward and said, "As for the matter right now, how is it?" Luoshan bowed with hands clasped and said, "Go eat tea." As the master was about to deliberate, Luoshan said, "The autumn air is slightly warm; get out." When the master reached the Dharma hall, he sighed to himself and said, "At the foot of Mount Emei in Western Shu, I picked up one reed arrow. I intended to throw the whole world into disorder. Today I have come to Elder Chen's stockade on the Fujian road, and my bow is broken and my arrows are exhausted. Enough, enough." The next day Luoshan ascended the hall. The master again came forward and asked, "Who is the one who opens wide the door and window and stands before the railing?" Luoshan immediately shouted. The master had no reply. Luoshan said, "Your feathers are not yet complete and your wing tips are not yet whole; go for now.") Because of this, the master gathered up his robes and for a long time received the seal of approval. Later he paid respects to Sheng Guang of Taizhou. Guang was sitting on a rope bed. The master walked straight in, came to his side, crossed his hands, and stood. Guang asked, "Where do you come from?" The master said, "I am still waiting for you to answer." The master then went down. Guang picked up his staff and whisk and went down. In front of the monks' hall he saw the master and, raising the whisk, asked, "Venerable, what do you call this?" The master said, "Daring death, gasping for breath." Guang lowered his head and returned to the abbot's quarters.

Reverend Ling Yan of Baiyun in Jianzhou. The master ascended the hall and said to the assembly, "Send him to the gate of the late teacher; who says he faces the mourner? Take care." A monk asked, "My own matter is not yet clear; by what is it verified?" The master said, "A wooden mirror reflects a plain face." He said, "After verification, how is it?" The master said, "Not much contest." He asked, "The three terraces have invited; the four assemblies are present at the feast. Since you occupy the seat of responsibility, please, master, give one chant." The master said, "If I want to chant, it is not difficult." He said, "Then please, master, chant." The master said, "In the still night the water is clear and the fish do not eat; the whole boat returns empty, carrying moonlight."
