Dun Jia Three Yuan Song

甲己臨仲上元天，臨孟之時作中元，臨季下元局日定，此名遁甲混三元，子午卯酉為四仲，寅申巳亥為四孟，辰戌丑未為四季，五日一侯為一元。

The song says: if the symbol head of Jia day or Ji day falls on the four central branches, it is considered the upper yuan; if it falls on the four initial branches, it is considered the middle yuan; if it falls on the four seasonal branches, it is considered the lower yuan. The situation of the day and the situation of the situation are thus determined — this is called the method of mixing the three yuan in Dun Jia. The four central branches are Zi, Wu, Mao, and You; the four initial branches are Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai; the four seasonal branches are Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei. Each five days form a period, and one period is one yuan.

The Yang Dun section has each trigram governing three solar terms, with each solar term paired with the upper, middle, and lower trigrams. The Kan palace governs the Winter Solstice, Minor Cold, and Major Cold: the Winter Solstice uses the first, seventh, and fourth trigrams; Minor Cold uses the second, eighth, and fifth trigrams; and Major Cold uses the third, ninth, and sixth trigrams. The Gen palace governs the Beginning of Spring, Rain Water, and Awakening of Insects: the Beginning of Spring uses the eighth, fifth, and second trigrams; Rain Water uses the ninth, sixth, and third trigrams; and Awakening of Insects uses the first, seventh, and fourth trigrams. The Zhen palace governs the Vernal Equinox, Clear and Bright, and Grain Rain: the Vernal Equinox uses the third, ninth, and sixth trigrams; Clear and Bright uses the fourth, first, and seventh trigrams; and Grain Rain uses the fifth, second, and eighth trigrams. The Xun palace governs the Beginning of Summer, Minor Heat, and Grain in Ear: the Beginning of Summer uses the fourth, first, and seventh trigrams; Minor Heat uses the fifth, second, and eighth trigrams; and Grain in Ear uses the sixth, third, and ninth trigrams. This is the method of using trigrams in Yang Dun. In the Yin Dun section, each trigram also governs three solar terms. The Li palace governs the Summer Solstice, Minor Heat, and Major Heat: the Summer Solstice uses the ninth, third, and sixth trigrams; Minor Heat uses the eighth, second, and fifth trigrams; and Major Heat uses the seventh, first, and fourth trigrams. The Kun palace governs the Beginning of Autumn, Limit of Heat, and White Dew: the Beginning of Autumn uses the second, fifth, and eighth trigrams; Limit of Heat uses the first, fourth, and seventh trigrams; and White Dew uses the ninth, third, and sixth trigrams. The Dui palace governs the Autumn Equinox, Cold Dew, and Frost Descent: the Autumn Equinox uses the seventh, first, and fourth trigrams; Cold Dew uses the sixth, ninth, and third trigrams; and Frost Descent uses the fifth, eighth, and second trigrams. The Qian palace governs the Beginning of Winter, Light Snow, and Heavy Snow: the Beginning of Winter uses the sixth, ninth, and third trigrams; Light Snow uses the fifth, eighth, and second trigrams; and Heavy Snow uses the fourth, seventh, and first trigrams. This is the method of using trigrams in Yin Dun.

此起節序要訣，大抵以八卦九宮分管二十四氣，先認明八節所屬之卦，如冬至坎，則坎宮一卦統三節，以三節所在之宮，各定上中下三元，假如冬至坎一宮，則為上元，七宮為中元，四宮為下元，其餘挨次推之，指掌可辨矣。

This is the key to determining the order of the twenty-four solar terms. Generally, the eight trigrams are used to divide the twenty-four solar terms into nine palaces. First, identify which trigram corresponds to each of the eight key solar terms. For example, the winter solstice belongs to the Kan trigram, so the Kan palace governs three solar terms. Then, for each of these three solar terms, determine the upper, middle, and lower trigrams. For instance, if the winter solstice belongs to the first palace of Kan, then the first palace is the upper trigram, the seventh palace is the middle trigram, and the fourth palace is the lower trigram. The remaining trigrams are arranged in order, just as clear as looking at one's own palm.

冬至驚蟄一七四，小寒二八五為次，大寒春分三九六，立春八五二為局，雨水九六三無失，清明立夏四一七，榖雨小滿五二八，芒種六三九為法。

The Yang Dun progression song for the seasonal sequences states: Winter Solstice and Start of Thunder use the first, seventh, and fourth trigrams; Minor Cold follows with the second, eighth, and fifth; Major Cold and Spring Equinox use the third, ninth, and sixth; Start of Spring uses the eighth, fifth, and second; Rain Water uses the ninth, sixth, and third, without error; Qingming and Start of Summer use the fourth, first, and seventh; Grain Rain and Minor Heat use the fifth, second, and eighth; Summer Solstice uses the sixth, third, and ninth. The Yin Dunretrograde (Yin遁逆行) seasonal song states: After the Summer Solstice and White Dew, the Nine, Three, and Six Three arrangements are used; Minor Heat uses Eight, Two, and Five, belonging to the Yin arrangement; Major Heat and Autumn Equinox use Seven, One, and Four; Beginning of Autumn sequentially uses Two, Five, and Eight palaces; Limit of Heat uses One, Four, and Seven; Frost Descent and Minor Snow use Five, Eight, and Two; Cold Dew and Beginning of Winter use Six, Nine, and Three; and Major Snow concludes with Four, Seven, and One. The three numbers correspond sequentially to the Upper, Middle, and Lower Trigrams.

In the six ten-day cycles of the Six Jia, the "five inauspicious hours" are as follows: In the Jiazi cycle, the hours Gengwu and Yichou on Jia day and Ji day are inauspicious; in the Jiaxu cycle, the hours Xinsi and Bingzi on Yi day and Geng day are inauspicious; in the Jiashen cycle, the hour Renchen on Bing day is inauspicious; in the Jiawu cycle, the hour Dingyou on Xin day is inauspicious; in the Jiachen cycle, the hours Guimao and Wushen on Ding day and Ren day are inauspicious; in the Jiayin cycle, the hours Jiayin and Jiwei on Wu day and Gui day are inauspicious. If these hours are encountered, even if there are gates and odd numbers, they should not be used.

Yang Dun one layout governs the four qi yuan: the beginning of winter to the first upper yuan, the middle yuan at the start of summer, the middle yuan on Qingming Festival, and the upper yuan on Jingzhe. In the Jiazi decade, Jiazi is the value symbol and Xiu Men is the duty gate. On the Jia day and Ji day: at Jiazi hour, the Gen direction forms the "door union" good pattern; at this time, the stars and doors are in their original positions, which is "hidden chant". At Yichou hour, the Dui direction forms "Heavenly遁" and "true fraud", the Qian direction forms "earth false", and the Li direction forms "heaven plate zhi fu". The bad side is the Qian and Kan directions forming "door return", the Kun direction forming "punishment pattern", and the Qian direction forming "vermilion bird falling into river". At Bingyin hour, the Gen direction forms "Azure Dragon returning head" and "heaven plate zhi fu", and the central palace forms "marvels union"; the bad side is the Gen direction forming "flying勃", the Kan direction forming "hidden palace pattern", and the Qian direction forming the three marvels entering the tomb. At Dingmao hour, the Li direction forms "marvels union", the Xun direction forms "door union", and the Gen direction forms "earth false"; the bad side is the Kun and Dui directions forming "door return". At Wuchen hour, the Li direction forms "door union"; at this time, the stars and doors are in hidden chant, and the Dui and Kun directions form "door return". At Jisi hour, the Kan direction forms "dragon遁", "Xiu fraud", and "heavenly three celestial stems", and meets the "Wenqu time"; the bad side is the Dui direction forming "teng snake妖矫", and the Gen direction forming the three marvels entering the tomb.

The adverse aspects include the Thunder Gate "Gate Reversal" combined with "Beating Punishment" and "Flying Palace Pattern", the Central Palace "Small Pattern", the Mountain Gate "Gate Reversal", and the Earth Gate with the Three Marvels entering the tomb. At Xinwei time, the Wind Gate forms "Three Marvels Ascending the Hall" and "Marvels Converging". The adverse aspects include the Heaven Gate "Great Pattern". At Renshen time, the Wind Gate forms "Cloud Concealment", "Wind Concealment", and "True Fraud". The adverse aspects include the Wind Gate "Gate Reversal" combined with "Azure Dragon Fleeing", the Central Palace "Heavenly Net", the Thunder Gate "Flashing Star Entering White Tiger", and the Fire Gate "Gate Reversal". At Guiyou time, the Earth Gate forms "God's Pretense", the Thunder Gate forms "Object's Pretense", and the Heaven Gate forms "Instrument Convergence". The adverse aspects include the Gate encountering Hidden Chant, the Mountain Gate "White Tiger Entering Flashing Star", the Fire Gate "White Tiger Rampant", and the Heaven Gate "Heavenly Net". Now changing to Jiaxu decade, with Jiaxu "Heavenly Rui" as the Chief Symbol and the Death Gate as the Duty Gate. At Jiaxu time, the Fire Gate forms "Heaven's Pretense", and the Mountain Gate forms "Gate Convergence". At this time, the stars, gates, and symbols return to their original positions and encounter Hidden Chant. At Yihai time, the Metal Gate forms "True Fraud" and "Mutual Harmony", and the Fire Gate forms "Heaven Plate Chief Symbol". The adverse aspects include the Heaven Gate "Gate Reversal" combined with the Three Marvels entering the tomb, and the Water Gate "Gate Reversal".

At Dingchou hour, the Zhen direction forms "Door Union"; the凶 aspect is the Dui palace with the heavenly stem entering its tomb, and the Gen palace "Tai Bai enters Ying", and the Li palace "White Tiger rampant". At Wuyin hour, only凶 formations occur: the Qian palace "Zhu Que throws himself into the river", and the Kun palace "Hidden Palace Formation" combined with "Crime Formation". At Jimao hour, the Dui direction forms "Yu Nu Guards the Gate"; the凶 aspect is the star and door hidden chant, and the Kun palace "Striking Crime". At Gengchen hour, the Kan direction forms "Ding Wonder", and the Kun direction forms "Instrument Union"; the凶 aspect is the Zhen palace "Door Reversal" combined with "Flying Palace Formation", and the Gen palace "Door Reversal" combined with the Three Marvels entering the tomb, and the Dui palace "Teng She妖矫". At Xinsi hour, all are凶 formations: the Central Palace "Small Formation", and the Kun palace with the Three Marvels entering the tomb. At Renwu hour, all are凶 formations: the Zhen and Li palaces "Door Reversal", the Qian palace "Great Formation", and the Central Palace "Heavenly Net". At Guiwei hour, the Kun direction forms "Shen Jia", and the Kan direction forms "Instrument Union"; the凶 aspect is the door meeting hidden chant, the Qian palace "Heavenly Net" combined with the heavenly stem entering its tomb, the Zhen palace "Ying enters Tai Bai", and the Xun palace "Azure Dragon escapes".

In the Jiashen ten-day period, with Jiashen "Tian Chong" as the chief symbol and Shang Men as the duty gate, at Jiashen hour, the Gen direction forms "Shen Dun" and coincides with "Tian Fu time," which is suitable for worship and ritual to ward off evil, and for initiating affairs during auspicious times. On the negative side, the stars, gates, and chief symbol all return to their original positions, resulting in "Fu Yin," and the Zhen palace forms "Fu Gong Ge," which suppresses endeavors; thus, it is advisable to remain still and avoid rash actions. At Yiyou hour, the Zhen direction forms "Shen Jia," which can be used for pursuing fugitives; the Li direction forms "Xiang Zuo" and "Qi He," receiving strong assistance and harmonious heavenly and earthly stems; on the negative side, the Qian and Kan palaces form "Men Fan," making travel prone to turning back halfway. At Bingxu hour, there are no auspicious patterns: the Gen palace forms "Ji Xing," where the duty gate palace and the native palace mutually conflict, indicating setbacks, combined with "Fei Bo," "Shi Mu," and "Tai Bai Ru Ying," and the Li palace forms "Bai Hu Chang Wang," so all affairs should be avoided, especially long journeys which risk harming people. At Dinghai hour, the Kun direction forms "Tian Jia," suitable for displaying strength and issuing proclamations; the Zhen direction forms "Fei Niao Die Xue" and "De Shi," "Huan Yi," which is a grand auspicious pattern for planning; on the negative side, the Zhen palace forms "Ying Ru Tai Bai," and the Xun palace forms "Qing Long Tao Zou," requiring vigilance against the loss of attendants and the dispersion of property. On丙 day and辛 day, at Wuzi hour, the Dui direction forms "Yu Nu Shou Men," suitable for secret movements and private visits; on the negative side, the Kun and Dui palaces form "Men Fan," and the Qian palace has the three marvels entering the tomb, making it unsuitable to display actions openly.

At Jichou hour, the乾 direction forms 「person遁」 and 「true fraud」, suitable for hiding and setting traps; the坎 direction has 「instrument harmony」, with the six instruments harmonizing with the palace dry branch. The bad aspect is the乾 palace 「vermilion bird drowning in river」, leading to loss of documents and messages, and the坤 palace 「punishment and grid」 combined with the hour dry branch entering the tomb, avoiding lawsuits and imprisonment. At Gengyin hour, the兑 direction has the three marvels rising and meets 「door harmony」, suitable for entering and exiting; the bad aspect is the stars and chief symbol hidden chant, the震 palace 「door reversal」 combined with 「flying palace grid」, and the艮 palace 「door reversal」, leading to many reversals and difficulty in achieving goals. At Xinmao hour, the艮 direction forms 「double fraud」 and 「mutual harmony」, with upper and lower harmony, suitable for reconciliation and surprising victory; the bad aspect is the兑 palace 「tang she strange distortion」, indicating false alarms and strange occurrences, and the艮 palace three marvels entering the tomb. At Renchen hour, the离 direction forms 「rest fraud」「prosperous energy」 and 「wandering official」, with flourishing energy and official and horse illuminating, suitable for seeking wealth and seeking employment; the兑 direction 「marvel harmony」 is also beneficial. The bad aspect is the巽 and离 palaces 「door reversal」, the central palace 「small grid」 combined with 「earth net」, the坤 palace marvel tomb, and the艮 palace hour tomb, leading to blocked roads and difficulty in travel. At Guisi hour, the坎 direction 「door harmony」 can be used; the bad aspect is the door meeting hidden chant, the乾 palace 「big grid」 combined with 「sky net four spread」, indicating travelers not arriving and being trapped in a net, at this time it is suitable to remain quiet and wait for the right time.

In the Jiawu ten-day period, with Jiawu "Tianfu" as the chief symbol and Dumen as the duty gate. At Jiawu time, the Gen direction forms "Chongzha" and coincides with "Tianfu time," making it a favorable time for setting ambushes and using spies; however, since the stars, gates, and chief symbol are all in their native palace and experiencing hidden chant, it is suitable for maintaining existing affairs rather than initiating new ones. At Yiwei time, the Qian direction forms "Yihhe," which is favorable; the unfavorable aspect is the Gen palace "Tai Bai Ru Ying," indicating mutual harm between host and guest, favoring defense over attack. The Li palace "Ji Xing" combined with "Baihu Changwang" warns against long journeys. At Bingshen time, the Qian direction forms "Di Jia," suitable for hiding and avoiding danger; the Kun direction forms "Men He." The unfavorable aspects are the Qian and Kan palaces "Men Fan," the Zhen palace "Ying Ru Tai Bai," the Xun palace "Qinglong Taozou," and the Gen palace "Fei Bo," leading to disorder and loss of wealth if action is taken. At Dingyou time, the most favorable configurations are present: the Kun palace forms "Tian Jia," the Kan palace forms "Zhen Zha," the Dui palace forms "Yünu Shoumen," and the Zhen palace has the Three Marvels ascending the hall and "Qihhe," suitable for visiting officials, planning, and secret communication; the only unfavorable aspect is the Qian palace "Dage," which means travelers will not arrive and vehicles may be damaged. At Wuxu time, the Xun palace forms "Xiu Zha" and "Huan Yi," which are pleasant and joyful; the Li palace forms "Qihhe." The unfavorable aspects are the Kun and Dui palaces "Men Fan," and the Kan palace has the time stem entering its tomb, indicating repeated changes and an unclear future.

At Jihai hour, the True Fraud in the Qian direction is suitable for setting an ambush; however, the Three Marvels in the same Qian palace fall into the tomb, making the marvels ineffective, thus greatly reducing auspicious power. On Ding day and Ren day: at Gengzi hour, the Earth Pretense in the Kan direction is suitable for hiding and escaping, and the Gate Union in the Dui direction is suitable for entering and exiting. On the negative side, the Gate Reversal in the Zhen palace combined with the Flying Palace pattern, and the Vermilion Bird falling into the river in the Qian palace, and the Crime Pattern in the Kun palace, and the Gate Reversal in the Gen palace, at this time documents are easily lost and actions often lead to legal troubles. At Xinchou hour, the Earth Pretense in the Kun direction and the Double Fraud in the Gen direction are both suitable for secret actions; however, since the stars and the Chief Symbol are in the Hidden Chant, it is still better to remain still. At Renyin hour, the Rest Fraud in the Li direction is formed along with the Three Marvels ascending the hall; on the negative side, the Gate Reversal in the Xun palace combined with the Hidden Palace pattern, and the Snake Deception in the Dui palace, and the Gate Reversal in the Li palace, and the marvels in the Gen palace being in the tomb, and the Central Palace with the Earth Net, leading to entanglements and repeated difficulties, making travel unfavorable. At Guimao hour, the Human Pretense in the Dui direction is formed, suitable for initiating lawsuits and using deception to lure the enemy, and the Gate Union in the Kan direction; on the negative side, the Gate meets the Hidden Chant, the Central Palace with the Small Pattern, the marvels in the Kun palace being in the tomb, and the Qian palace with the Four Spread Nets, a net overhead, all affairs should be stopped.

In the Jiachen ten-day period, with Jiachen as the Chief Symbol and the Life Gate as the Duty Gate, the number five of the Central Palace is assigned to the Mountain Palace. At Jiachen hour, the Mountain Palace is both the "Wenqu Star Hour" and forms a "Door Harmony," indicating suitable entry and exit; however, the stars, doors, and Chief Symbol are all hidden, so it is advisable to stick to old ways. At Yisi hour, the Thunder Palace has "Double Deception," which can be used; the unfavorable aspect is the Thunder Palace's "Flashing Star Enters White Tiger," indicating that I may injure the other party, so it is favorable to take the initiative. The Wind Palace has "Azure Dragon Fleeing," so one should beware of servants fleeing. At Bingwu hour, the Lake Palace has "Yünu Guarding the Gate," which is suitable for private visits and secret communication; the unfavorable aspect is the Wind and Fire Palaces having "Door Reversal," the Mountain Palace having "Flying勃," and the Heaven Palace having "Great Obstruction," leading to travelers not arriving and disturbances occurring easily. At Dingwei hour, the Water Palace has "Double Deception," which can be used for planning; the unfavorable aspect is the Central Palace having both "Hidden Palace Obstruction" and "Small Obstruction," the Earth Palace having buried odd numbers, and roads being blocked, causing the plan to be suppressed. At the Yihai hour, the Kun direction has "Heavy Fraud" and "Marvels Combined," with harmonious dry and branch elements, making it suitable for using spies. However, the Qian and Kan directions have "Gate Reversal," which is unfavorable for travel and may lead to turning back. On the Yi day and the Geng day: at the Bingzi hour, the Zhen direction has "Gate Combined" along with the Three Marvels ascending the hall, the Central Palace has "Azure Dragon Returns Head" and "Heaven Plate Assistant," and the Kan direction also has "Gate Combined." Three directions are favorable, making it suitable for great achievements. However, the Central Palace has "Flying Bo," so one should not act too hastily. Although there are many favorable patterns, there are even more unfavorable ones: the Kun palace has "Gate Reversal" combined with the Marvels' burial, the Central Palace has "Tai Bai Entering Fluorescence," the Qian palace has "White Tiger Rampant," the Xun palace has burial, and the Dui palace has "Gate Reversal." At Renchen hour, the Lake Gate is "door combined," and the Wind Gate is "marvel combined"; the unfavorable aspect is that the Wind and Fire Gates have "door reversal," and the Earth Gate has "small obstruction" combined with the hour's burial and "earth net," causing travel to be obstructed. At Guisi hour, the Mountain Gate has "Bing Wonder" and is suitable for祈禳; the unfavorable aspect is that the door meets "hidden chant," the Thunder Gate has "great obstruction" combined with "four spread of Gui," with travelers not arriving and being trapped in a net, thus it is advisable to stop rather than travel.

At Renxu time, the South direction (Li) combined with Cheng has "rest fraud," "gain command," "heavenly three celestial stems," and "wandering fortune," which is a favorable direction for seeking wealth and making alliances; however, the Wind and Fire Palaces have "door reversal," the Fire Palace also encounters "Vermilion Bird Falling into River," the Central Palace has "刑格," the Earth Palace has buried marvels, and the Mountain Palace has "earth net," so the good is overcome by the bad, and it is advisable to proceed slowly. At Guihai time, the Water direction (Kan) has "door harmony"; however, the stars, symbols, and doors are all hidden, and the Fire Palace also has "heavenly net spread wide," the entire situation ends here, and it is advisable to conceal and guard oneself.
