Charting guides: Qi Men Dun Jia Chart

To determine a person's destiny throughout their life, one should divide it into three sections: heaven, earth, and human. The main star governs the circumstances in youth, the main gate governs middle age, and the main palace governs old age. Among these, the main star is most important. When asking about one's entire life, it is auspicious to obtain the Three Marvels, favorable gates, and the eight deceptions. As for the calculation of the flying plate and the flowing plate, it is still important to obtain the palace and the gate.

Divination on the Family Residence

When divining the fortune of a family's residence, the 'Chief Symbol' represents the new house, while the 'Duty Gate' represents the old house. The 'Chief Symbol' stands for the main house, the 'Duty Gate' for the side rooms; the 'Chief Symbol' represents a yang house, the 'Duty Gate' a yin house; the 'Chief Symbol' represents oneself, the 'Duty Gate' the fields and land; the 'Chief Symbol' represents the elders, the 'Duty Gate' the younger generations; the 'Chief Symbol' represents the heart and the five internal organs, the 'Duty Gate' the limbs and the meridians. These can be examined separately or together. If the 'Chief Symbol' is overcome, the new house is inauspicious; if the 'Duty Gate' is overcome, the old house is inauspicious. The judgment should be based on the principles of generation and overcoming according to the matter being divined. In addition, the main star represents the person residing in the house, and the flying gate represents the house itself. Both should be in a state of growth and strength, not decline or decay. If they also receive the Three Marvels and the Eight Deceptions, it is an excellent omen. When divining about a family's residence, the 'Chief Symbol' represents the person, and the eight gates added to the 'Chief Symbol' represent the house. The nine stars on the Earth Plate represent the opposite house and the left neighbor, while the right palace represents the right neighbor.

Divination on Geography

Divining geographical features: use nine stars to represent dragon veins and burial sites, and eight gates to represent the structure of the bright hall. If the stars are overcome, the burial site is not auspicious; if the gates are overcome, the bright hall is not good; the same applies if they fall into emptiness. If the chief symbol is auspicious but the duty gate is inauspicious, as long as there are the three marvels and the gates, it is still possible to dig the grave and perform burial. If the chief symbol is inauspicious but the duty gate is auspicious, even with the qimen, it cannot be used. Divining graves: the chief symbol represents the person divining, the nine stars encountered by the earth plate under the chief symbol represent the deceased, and the gates encountered by the earth plate under the duty symbol represent the deceased's grave. Check whether these two aspects are mutually generating, whether they are in a flourishing position, and whether they can be supported by the three marvels and six instruments. If so, it is auspicious. If the deceased overcomes the grave, it can bring wealth but not noble people; if the grave overcomes the deceased, it will certainly lead to legal disputes, verbal conflicts, and unexpected events. Always check the mutual generation and overcoming between the nine stars and eight gates to determine auspiciousness or inauspiciousness.

Yin and Yang dual concealment, odd instruments, symbol markers, and palace diagram explanation

The classic text says that the eighteen sections are the most profound skill of Dun Jia, established by Zhang Liang of the Han dynasty. In total, they consist of nine sections of Yang Dun and nine sections of Yin Dun. Each section governs four solar terms, and each solar term controls sixty hours. This is indeed an unchanging standard of Dun Jia throughout the ages. However, the diagrams of the nine sections are only the correct diagrams for the initial hour of the current solar term, Jiazi. For the other hours from Yichou to Guihai, the odd instruments, Chief Symbol, Duty Gate, and the auspicious or inauspicious patterns are difficult to arrange. Some people do not study the methods of the gates, oddities, stars, and the movement and positioning of symbols, but instead cut each section into movable diagrams for calculation, leading to disorder in the sequence of stars and gates. This kind of error in printed editions is indeed quite serious.

The method of establishing the initial layout in Dun Jia is entirely based on the original numerical sequence of the nine palaces in the Luo Writing: Yang Dun starts from the first palace and counts up to the ninth palace, while Yin Dun starts from the ninth palace and counts back to the first palace, arranging the nine palaces in a clockwise order for Yang Dun and counter-clockwise for Yin Dun. In this way, all ninety layouts covering five hundred forty hours can be clearly understood. Now this concise method of creating a living diagram has been established, which is more flexible and adaptable than the old diagram from the Han dynasty created by Zhang Liang. The subtlety of Dun Jia methods has no equal to it.

I explain this method as follows: For the nine formations of Yang Dun, they are arranged in order starting from the Kan one palace, sequentially being Kun two, Zhen three, Xun four, Zhong five, Qian six, Dui seven, Gen eight, and Li nine, forming the nine palaces of the Earth Plate. The Wu is placed in the Kan one palace, and then the order is followed with Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui, Ding, Bing, and Yi, forming the nine symbols of the Earth Plate. The Tianpeng star is placed in the Kan one palace, followed by Tianrui, Tianchong, Tianfu, Tianqin, Tianxin, Tianzhu, Tianren, and Tianying, forming the nine stars of the Earth Plate. These are combined into one layer, and thus the Earth Plate's stars and symbols are determined for this formation. Then, the eight gates are arranged in the order of Xiu, Si, Shang, Du, Kai, Jing, Sheng, and Jing, and arranged in a clockwise order to form the values and gates, thus determining the Human Plate's gates and values. The Heaven Plate is also arranged in the same way as the Earth Plate, combining the stars and symbols into one layer, thus completing the Heaven Plate for this formation.

For example, if the time of divination is the Jiazi hour, place the value symbol and the Tianpeng star from the Jiazi position on the Heaven Plate onto the Earth Plate's Jia stem in the Kan one palace. Then place the Xiu Men on the Human Plate in the Kan one palace. This is the correct diagram for the Yang Dun first layout at the Jiazi hour. Although the nine palaces are arranged in order, the arrangement of the odd instruments, value symbols, duty gates, and the fortune of the layout remain clear and orderly, just as in the correct diagram drawn according to the eight trigrams directions. Similarly, if the time is Yichou, place the value symbol and Tianpeng star from the Jiazi position on the Heaven Plate onto the Earth Plate's Yi stem in the Li nine palace. Then place the Xiu Men on the Human Plate in the Kun two palace. This is the diagram for the Yang Dun first layout at the Yichou hour.

Following the order of the Six Jia (Six Heavenly Stems), the Chief Symbols, Duty Gates, and odd instruments rotate through the sixty hours, interconnecting flexibly. The good and bad omens correspond as clearly as an echo. For example, at the hour of Bingzi, the Chief Symbol of the Heaven Plate Jiaxu is placed on the Earth Plate's Bing dry branch in the Gen eight palace. The Duty Gate of the Human Plate is placed on the Death Door in the Xun four palace. This is the diagram for the Bingzi hour in the Jiaxu decade.

The Chief Symbol for each ten-day period such as Jia Shen is determined by following the same method. For example, in the second Yang Dun arrangement, the Jia Zi Chief Symbol is combined with the "Tian Rui" star to form a layer, placed in the second Kun Palace as the Earth Plate of the second arrangement. The Heaven Plate is also formed in the same way as the Earth Plate, combining the stars and symbols into a layer as the Heaven Plate of the second arrangement. Then, the eight gates are arranged in the order of death, injury, stop, center, open, alarm, life, view, and rest, arranged in sequence to form another layer as the Human Plate of the second arrangement. This is the fixed method for arranging the stars and symbols for the second arrangement.

For example, if the time of divination is the Jiazi hour, place the value symbol and Tianrui star of the Heaven Plate Jiazi on the Earth Plate's Kung two palace with the Jia stem. Then place the duty gate, which is the Death Door, on the Human Plate's Kung two palace. This is the correct diagram for Yang Dun two layout at the Jiazi hour. Similarly, if the time is Yichou, place the value symbol and Tianrui star of the Heaven Plate Jiazi on the Earth Plate's Kan one palace with the Yi stem. Then place the duty gate, which is the Death Door, on the Human Plate's Zhen three palace. This is the diagram for Yang Dun two layout at the Yichou hour. By following the order of the six Jia values in sequence, the auspicious and inauspicious patterns of the sixty hours can be immediately seen; other value symbols can be similarly inferred using the same method.

Now let us discuss the quick method for the Yin Dun (Yin遁) living diagram. For example, in the nine formations of Yin Dun, arrange the nine palaces of the Earth Plate in the order of Li nine, Gen eight, Dui seven, Qian six, Zhong five, Xun four, Zhen three, Kun two, and Kan one. Place Wu in the Li nine palace, and arrange Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui, Ding, Bing, and Yi in reverse order as the odd instruments of the Earth Plate. Place the Tian Ying star in the Li nine palace, and arrange Tian Ren, Tian Zhu, Tian Xin, Tian Qin, Tian Fu, Tian Chong, Tian Rui, and Tian Peng in reverse order as the nine stars of the Earth Plate, forming one layer. Thus, the nine formations of the Earth Plate's stars and symbols are determined. Then, arrange the eight gates in the order of Jing, Sheng, Jing, Kai, Zhong, Du, Shang, Si, and Xiu in reverse order as the duty gates, forming another layer. Thus, the nine formations of the Human Plate's gates and duty gates are determined. The Heaven Plate is arranged in the same way as the Earth Plate, forming one layer of stars and symbols. Thus, the nine formations of the Heaven Plate are determined.

For example, if the time of divination is the Jiazi hour, place the value symbol and Tianying star from the Jiazi position on the Heaven Plate onto the Li nine palace of the Earth Plate with the Jia stem. Then, place the Jing Gate of the Human Plate onto the Li nine palace. This forms the correct diagram for Yin Dun nine layouts at the Jiazi hour. Similarly, if the time is Yichou, place the value symbol and Tianying star from the Jiazi position on the Heaven Plate onto the Kan one palace with the Yi stem. Then, place the Jing Gate of the Human Plate onto the Gen eight palace. This forms the diagram for Yin Dun nine layouts at the Yichou hour.

Following the order of the Six Jia, the Chief Symbol is reversed to determine the Chief Symbol, Duty Gate, and the odd instruments for each of the sixty hours. For example, in the hour of Bingzi, the Chief Symbol of the Heaven Plate Jiaxu is placed on the Earth Plate Binggan, and the Duty Gate of the Human Plate is placed on the Life Gate in the Kun two palace. This is the diagram for the Bingzi hour in the Jiaxu decade.

The value symbols for each of the ten days such as Jia Shen are deduced in the same way. For example, in the eighth Yin Dun, the Jia Zi value symbol is combined with the Tian Ren star to form a layer, placed in the Gen eighth palace as the earth plate of the eighth division. The heaven plate is also formed in the same way as the earth plate, combining the stars and symbols into a layer as the heaven plate of the eighth division. Then, the eight gates are arranged in the order of Sheng, Jing, Kai, Zhong, Du, Shang, Si, Xiu, Jing, and arranged in reverse order to form another layer as the human plate of the eighth division. This is the fixed method for arranging the eight divisions' stars and symbols.

For example, if the time of divination is the Jiazi hour, place the value symbol and Tian Ren star of the Jiazi Heaven Plate on the Gen eight palace of the Earth Plate with the Jia stem. Then place the Life Gate on the Gen eight palace of the Human Plate. This is the correct diagram for the Yin Dun eighth layout at the Jiazi hour. Similarly, if the time is Yichou, place the value symbol and Tian Ren star of the Jiazi Heaven Plate on the Li nine palace of the Earth Plate with the Yi stem. Then place the Life Gate on the Dui seven palace of the Human Plate. This is the diagram for the Yin Dun eighth layout at the Yichou hour. Following the order of the six Jia stems, the sixty hours complete a full cycle. By the time it reaches the Guihai hour, the stars, symbols, odd numbers, and duty gates all return to the Hidden Chant, which is fixed. The remaining layouts and the six value symbols of each layout can be deduced in the same way.

A diagram explaining the movement of the eight deities in the palace of yin and yang, with both yin and yang paths.

The text says: The chief symbol moves forward to the third position to be "Liu He," and the "Tai Yin" deity is in the second position forward. The first position behind is "Jiu Tian," and the second position behind is "Jiu Di." This refers to the fixed positions of the Eight Gods. The Eight Gods do not use the flying palace method, but instead divide into yin and yang, moving in reverse order for yin and forward order for yang, and they are arranged in sequence to the directions, not following the numerical order of the nine palaces. Instead, they are arranged according to the sequence of the Eight Trigrams: Kan, Gen, Zhen, Xun, Li, Kun, Dui, and Qian. The arrangement follows the rule of adding the small chief symbol to the large chief symbol. For example, if the chief symbol of the Heaven Plate Jiazi is placed in the first palace of Kan, then the Eight Gods should be arranged as follows: the "Chief Symbol" is placed on top of the Heaven Plate Jiazi chief symbol, then sequentially: Teng Sha in Gen, Tai Yin in Zhen, Liu He in Xun, Gou Chen in Li, Zhu Que in Kun, Jiu Di in Dui, and Jiu Tian in Qian. This is how the Eight Gods move according to the Eight Trigrams, which corresponds exactly to the meaning of the text that the chief symbol's third position forward is Liu He, the second position forward is Tai Yin, the first position behind is Jiu Tian, and the second position behind is Jiu Di.

I explain the method of flying the eight spirits across the nine palaces according to the positions of the trigrams: if the chief symbol is in the first palace, then the second palace is the Vermilion Bird, the third palace is Tai Yin, the fourth palace is Liu He, the fifth palace is the Central Palace, the sixth palace is Jiu Tian, the seventh palace is Jiudi, the eighth palace is Teng Sha, and the ninth palace is Gou Chen. This is the method of positioning the chief symbol and the eight spirits when they are placed in the Kan palace. Although the eight spirits are flying across the nine palaces, when examining their positions according to the eight trigrams, both methods correspond. This is the concise method for Yang Dun, where the chief symbol and the eight spirits are arranged according to the trigrams.

If the Chief Symbol is in the second palace, then the third palace is Vermilion Bird, the fourth palace is Jiudi, the fifth palace is Central Palace, the sixth palace is Taiyin, the seventh palace is Tengshe, the eighth palace is Gou Chen, the ninth palace is Jiu Tian, and the first palace is Liu He; this is the arrangement when the Chief Symbol and eight spirits are placed in the Kun second palace. If the Chief Symbol is in the third palace, then the fourth palace is Tengshe, the fifth palace is Central Palace, the sixth palace is Vermilion Bird, the seventh palace is Gou Chen, the eighth palace is Jiu Tian, the ninth palace is Taiyin, the first palace is Jiudi, and the second palace is Liu He; this is the arrangement when the Chief Symbol and eight spirits are placed in the Zhen third palace.

If the Chief Symbol is in the fourth palace, then the fifth palace is the Central Palace, the sixth palace is Gou Chen, the seventh palace is Liu He, the eighth palace is Jiudi, the ninth palace is Teng Sha, the first palace is Vermilion Bird, the second palace is Tai Yin, and the third palace is Jiu Tian; this is the positioning of the eight symbols added to the palace of Xun (Wind) when the Chief Symbol is in the fourth palace. If the Chief Symbol is in the sixth palace, then the seventh palace is Jiu Tian, the eighth palace is Tai Yin, the ninth palace is Vermilion Bird, the first palace is Teng Sha, the second palace is Jiudi, the third palace is Liu He, the fourth palace is Gou Chen, and the fifth palace is the Central Palace; this is the positioning of the eight symbols added to the palace of Qian (Heaven) when the Chief Symbol is in the sixth palace.

If the Chief Symbol is in the seventh palace, then the eighth palace is Liu He, the ninth palace is Jiudi, the first palace is Tai Yin, the second palace is Jiu Tian, the third palace is Gou Chen, the fourth palace is Vermilion Bird, the fifth palace is the Central Palace, and the sixth palace is Teng Sha; this is the positioning of the eight symbols when the Chief Symbol is added to the Dui (Lake) seventh palace. If the Chief Symbol is in the eighth palace, then the ninth palace is Liu He, the first palace is Jiu Tian, the second palace is Gou Chen, the third palace is Teng Sha, the fourth palace is Tai Yin, the fifth palace is the Central Palace, the sixth palace is Jiudi, and the seventh palace is Vermilion Bird; this is the positioning of the eight symbols when the Chief Symbol is added to the Gen (Mountain) eighth palace.

If the Chief Symbol is in the ninth palace, then the first palace is Gou Chen, the second is Teng Sha, the third is Jiudi, the fourth is Jiu Tian, the fifth is the Central Palace, the sixth is Liu He, the seventh is Tai Yin, and the eighth is Vermilion Bird; this is the arrangement of the eight spirits when the Chief Symbol is placed in the ninth palace of the Li trigram. If the Chief Symbol falls in the central fifth palace, then according to the trigram position of the palace it is located in, the eight spirits are arranged in order. The method of calculation is the same for all nine palaces: placing the Chief Symbol on the trigram palace and arranging the eight spirits accordingly to determine their layout, which is indeed a concise and ingenious mnemonic.

Yin Dun's eight spirits move in reverse order of the trigrams, following the sequence of Li, Xun, Zhen, Gen, Kan, Qian, Dui, and Kun. The method remains the same as placing the small value symbol on top of the large value symbol. For example, if the value symbol of Tianpan Jiazi is placed in the Li trigram's ninth palace, then the eight spirits should be arranged with the value symbol placed on top of the Tianpan Jiazi value symbol, and then arranged in reverse order: Tengshe in Xun, Taiyin in Zhen, Liuhe in Gen, Gouchen in Kan, Zhuqiao in Qian, Jiudi in Dui, and Jiu Tian in Kun. This is how the eight spirits follow the eight trigrams, which aligns with the classic text's statement that the value symbol's front three are Liuhe, the front two are Taiyin, the value symbol's back two are Jiudi, and the back one is Jiu Tian.

I explain according to the method of the Eight Gods flying in reverse order through the Nine Palaces, following the positions of the Trigrams: if the Chief Symbol is in the ninth Palace, then the eighth Palace is Liu He, the seventh Palace is Jiudi, the sixth Palace is Vermilion Bird, the fifth Palace is Central Palace, the fourth Palace is Teng Sha, the third Palace is Tai Yin, the second Palace is Jiu Tian, and the first Palace is Gou Chen; this is the positioning when the Chief Symbol and the Eight Gods are added to the Trigram Li in the ninth Palace. If the Chief Symbol is in the eighth Palace, then the seventh Palace is Liu He, the sixth Palace is Tai Yin, the fifth Palace is Central Palace, the fourth Palace is Jiudi, the third Palace is Jiu Tian, the second Palace is Gou Chen, the first Palace is Teng Sha, and the ninth Palace is Vermilion Bird; this is the positioning when the Chief Symbol and the Eight Gods are added to the Trigram Gen in the eighth Palace.

If the Chief Symbol is in the seventh palace, then the sixth palace is Jiu Tian, the fifth palace is the Central Palace, the fourth palace is Liu He, the third palace is Gou Chen, the second palace is Teng Sha, the first palace is Jiudi, the ninth palace is Tai Yin, and the eighth palace is Zhu Que; this is the positioning of the eight symbols added to the Dui palace when the Chief Symbol is in the eighth palace. If the Chief Symbol is in the sixth palace, then the fifth palace is the Central Palace, the fourth palace is Gou Chen, the third palace is Zhu Que, the second palace is Tai Yin, the first palace is Jiu Tian, the ninth palace is Liu He, the eighth palace is Jiudi, and the seventh palace is Teng Sha; this is the positioning of the eight symbols added to the Qian sixth palace when the Chief Symbol is in the sixth palace.

If the Chief Symbol is in the fourth palace, then the third palace is the螣蛇, the second palace is Jiudi, the first palace is Liu He, the ninth palace is Jiu Tian, the eighth palace is Tai Yin, the seventh palace is Vermilion Bird, the sixth palace is Gou Chen, and the fifth palace is the Central Palace; this is the positioning of the eight symbols when the Chief Symbol is added to the Xun (Wind) fourth palace. If the Chief Symbol is in the third palace, then the second palace is Vermilion Bird, the first palace is Tai Yin, the ninth palace is Jiudi, the eighth palace is螣蛇, the seventh palace is Gou Chen, the sixth palace is Liu He, the fifth palace is the Central Palace, and the fourth palace is Jiu Tian; this is the positioning of the eight symbols when the Chief Symbol is added to the Zhen (Thunder) third palace.

If the Chief Symbol is in the second palace, then the first palace is the Vermilion Bird, the ninth palace is the Snake, the eighth palace is Gou Chen, the seventh palace is Jiu Tian, the sixth palace is Jiudi, the fifth palace is the Central Palace, the fourth palace is Tai Yin, and the third palace is Liu He; this is the arrangement of the eight spirits when the Chief Symbol is located in the second palace of the Earthly Branch Kun. If the Chief Symbol is in the first palace, then the ninth palace is Gou Chen, the eighth palace is Jiu Tian, the seventh palace is Tai Yin, the sixth palace is the Snake, the fifth palace is the Central Palace, the fourth palace is the Vermilion Bird, the third palace is Jiudi, and the second palace is Liu He; this is the arrangement of the eight spirits when the Chief Symbol is located in the first palace of the Earthly Branch Kan. If the Chief Symbol falls in the central fifth palace, then it should be arranged according to the hexagram position of the palace it resides in, following the order of the eight spirits. The method of calculation is always determined by the Chief Symbol being located on the hexagram position of the palace, and the nine sections follow the same principle. It follows either the yang or the yin, and its subtleties are endless, making it the essential secret of the movement of the eight spirits.

Yin and Yang both conceal and reveal in the palace, with the palace and the direct command diagram explanation.

Once the Heaven and Earth disks of the palace arrangement are fixed, the stars and instruments in the nine palaces can be rotated completely. However, the middle disk's duty gate is special because of the rule "exceeding six" and "exceeding four." When it comes to the central palace, the duty gate is interrupted and cannot be placed there. Therefore, a separate disk is prepared to complete it. For example, in the case of Yang Dun, the first layout on a Jiazi day and Jiazi hour, the Xiu Men is in the first palace, the Death Door in the second, the Shang Men in the third, and the Du Men in the fourth. The central palace has no door. Since Yang Dun proceeds in order, after passing the central palace, it reaches the sixth palace. Therefore, the upper disk is used to place the Open Door in the sixth palace, allowing all eight doors to have their respective duty gates. Similarly, on a Yichou hour, the Xiu Men is in the second palace, the Death Door in the third, the Shang Men in the fourth, and the central palace has no door. Then the upper disk is used to place the Du Men in the sixth palace, thus the Du Men is considered to have moved to the sixth palace.

For example, in the case of Yin Dun (Yin遁) ninth layout on the day and hour of Jiazi (甲子), the Jing Gate (景门) is at the ninth palace, the Life Gate (生门) at the eighth, the Jing Door (惊门) at the seventh, and the Open Door (开门) at the sixth. The Central Palace (中宫) has no gate. Since Yin Dun moves in reverse, it passes over the Central Palace to reach the fourth palace. Therefore, the upper disk is used to place the Du Gate (杜门) at the fourth palace, allowing all eight gates to be assigned their respective Duty Gates (值使). Similarly, on the hour of Yichou (乙丑), the Jing Gate is at the eighth palace, the Life Gate at the seventh, the Jing Door at the sixth, and the Central Palace has no gate. The upper disk is then used to place the Open Door at the fourth palace, thus the Open Door is considered to have moved to the fourth palace. The same method applies to the Duty Gates of all other layouts.

Yin and Yang Nine Evade Eight Gods Overcoming Palace Method

This method involves determining the positions of the Eight Gods based on where the Chief Symbol is located in a trigram and a palace. For example, if the Chief Symbol in a Yang Dun is located in the first palace of the Kan trigram, then starting from the first palace, it proceeds in order to the ninth palace, without entering the central fifth palace. According to the previously determined order of the Eight Gods in Yang Dun, they are arranged sequentially in the nine palaces. Similarly, if the Chief Symbol in a Yin Dun is placed in the ninth palace of the Li trigram, it starts from the ninth palace and proceeds in reverse order to the first palace, again without entering the central fifth palace. According to the previously determined order of the Eight Gods in Yin Dun, they are arranged sequentially in the nine palaces. Both Yang Dun and Yin Dun have nine sections, all following the same method.

There were originally four sets of diagrams: the flying palace diagrams of Yang Dun's nine arrays, the palace arrangement diagrams of Yang Dun's nine arrays, the flying palace diagrams of Yin Dun's nine arrays, and the palace arrangement diagrams of Yin Dun's nine arrays. The term "flying palace" refers to the arrangement according to the sequence of the nine palace numbers, while "palace arrangement" refers to the sequential rotation according to the positions of the eight trigrams. The original text here only includes the titles of the diagrams without the actual figures. The specific arrangement methods can be deduced using the previously mentioned quick method of the living diagram and the method of the eight deities entering the palace.

Volume Six

Dun Jia Discourse

The so-called Six Instruments refer to the six positions beneath the Three Marvels, which are governed by the Six Jia. The Three Marvels correspond to the celestial Sun, Moon, and Star: Bing represents the Moon Marvel, Ding the Star Marvel, and Yi the Sun Marvel. The Six Instruments are the six characters that receive the Six Jia, namely Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui. Therefore, Jiazi is hidden beneath Wu, Jiaxu beneath Ji, Jiashen beneath Geng, Jiawu beneath Xin, Jiachen beneath Ren, and Jiayin beneath Gui. The so-called Dun Jia, or Hidden Jia, refers to the Jia character that moves with the yin and yang energies, thus being concealed. It is called Dun Jia because it hides within the Six Instruments.

The nine stars are known as Tianpeng, Tianrui, Tianchong, Tianfu, Tianqin, Tianxin, Tianzhu, Tianren, and Tianying. The eight gates are Xiumen, Simen, Shangmen, Dumen, Kemen, Jingmen, Shengmen, and Jingmen. The concept of San Cai refers to the nine stars symbolizing heaven above, the nine palaces symbolizing earth below, and the eight gates symbolizing humanity in the middle, forming the upper, middle, and lower discs. The Chief Symbol is the nine star that flies out with the palace. The Duty Gate is the gate that stops at the time of the hour and is added upon, making that gate the Duty Gate. The eight festivals are the Winter Solstice and Summer Solstice, the Start of Spring, Start of Summer, Start of Autumn, and Start of Winter, as well as the Vernal Equinox and Autumnal Equinox. After the Winter Solstice, Yang Dun is used, counting from the first palace to the ninth palace in order. After the Summer Solstice, Yin Dun is used, counting from the ninth palace back to the first palace in reverse. The three yuan are divided as follows: the days of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You are considered the upper yuan, the days of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai are the middle yuan, and the days of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are the lower yuan. The day of Jiazi is the starting point for the symbol head, and each five days mark a change in the yuan.

The flying arrangement of the three marvels and six instruments: in a yang遁, the three marvels are arranged in reverse order while the six instruments are arranged in forward order; in a yin遁, the six instruments are arranged in reverse order while the three marvels are arranged in forward order. All are arranged in the order of Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui, Ding, Bing, Yi, filling the nine palaces according to the sequence of yin and yang and the direction of movement. Each palace governs a ten-day period. Starting with Jiazi Wu as the beginning of the ten-day period, the chief symbol moves along with the stars and instruments, hidden and changing, until it reaches Guiyou. Every ten hours, the beginning of the ten-day period changes to Jiaxu. The chief symbol then, according to the gate to which the six heavenly stems belong, finds the position where the current hour's branch falls and places the chief symbol there, which is called the duty gate.

The concept of "superior deity connecting energy" involves examining the day when the solar term begins, and determining whether it starts on a Jia day or a Ji day. Then, based on the day of the solar term, the system of dividing the year into periods is established. For example, if Jiazi day coincides exactly with the winter solstice, then the upper beginning of the winter solstice is used, which is called "correct transmission," as the symbol head and the solar term occur on the same day. Another example is when the symbol head before the winter solstice is Jiachen, but the day of the solar term is on Dingwei. In this case, the symbol head appears before the solar term. Therefore, from Jiachen day to Bingwu day, the previous solar term, Xiaoxue, continues to be used, lasting three days. On the day of Dingwei, the system changes to the lower beginning of the winter solstice with the symbol head Jiachen. On Jiyou day, it changes again to the upper beginning of the winter solstice. This is the method of breaking and re-establishing the system. Other cases can be similarly inferred.

The arrangement of the Eight Deceptions also follows the principle of Yang movement in a clockwise direction and Yin movement in a counterclockwise direction. When determining which Jia stem's symbol head is added to the Zi hour's heavenly stem position, the Chief Symbol is placed on top of that symbol head. This is referred to as "the Chief Symbol added to the first day of the ten-day cycle, and the minor Chief Symbol added to the major Chief Symbol." The center palace does not have a specific direction, so the method of establishing a lodging palace was introduced. In Yang Dun, the lodging palace begins at the Gen palace from the winter solstice, while in Yin Dun, it begins at the Kun palace from the summer solstice. Compared to the old method of always lodging in the Kun palace, this approach is more flexible and adaptable, aligning better with the subtle and profound principles.

According to the method of using the odd numbers, there are two approaches: Yang Dun and Yin Dun. The days of Jia and Ji are used as the starting points. When encountering the situation of changing the qi and surpassing the heavenly stem, the method of splitting and supplementing the layout is still used. For example, a Yang Dun layout covers four solar terms: the first period of the winter solstice, the middle period of the beginning of summer, the middle period of Qingming, and the first period of Jingzhe. Seven layouts cover the middle period of the winter solstice, the lower period of the beginning of summer, the lower period of Qingming, and the middle period of Jingzhe. Four layouts cover the lower period of the winter solstice, the upper period of the beginning of summer, the upper period of Qingming, and the lower period of Jingzhe. Two layouts cover the upper period of Xiaohan, the middle period of Xiaoman, the middle period of Guyu, and the lower period of Lichun.

The eight sections of the Yang Dun cover the periods of Xia Han Zhong Yuan, Xia Man Xia Yuan, Gu Yu Xia Yuan, and Li Chun Shang Yuan; the five sections cover Xia Han Xia Yuan, Xia Man Shang Yuan, Gu Yu Shang Yuan, and Li Chun Zhong Yuan; the three sections cover Da Han Shang Yuan, Mang Zhong Zhong Yuan, Chun Fen Shang Yuan, and Yu Shui Xia Yuan; the nine sections cover Da Han Zhong Yuan, Mang Zhong Xia Yuan, Chun Fen Zhong Yuan, and Yu Shui Shang Yuan; and the six sections cover Da Han Xia Yuan, Mang Zhong Shang Yuan, Chun Fen Xia Yuan, and Yu Shui Zhong Yuan. The above are the thirty-six yuan covered by the nine sections of Yang Dun, used in the method of calculating time in the art of Qimen.

Yin Dun nine sections cover the summer solstice upper yuan, the beginning of winter middle yuan, the cold dew middle yuan, and the white dew upper yuan; three sections cover the summer solstice middle yuan, the beginning of winter lower yuan, the cold dew lower yuan, and the white dew middle yuan; six sections cover the summer solstice lower yuan, the beginning of winter upper yuan, the cold dew upper yuan, and the white dew lower yuan; eight sections cover the minor heat upper yuan, the minor snow middle yuan, the frost descent middle yuan, and the beginning of autumn lower yuan; two sections cover the minor heat middle yuan, the minor snow lower yuan, the frost descent lower yuan, and the beginning of autumn upper yuan; five sections cover the minor heat lower yuan, the minor snow upper yuan, the frost descent upper yuan, and the beginning of autumn middle yuan. Seven sections cover the major heat upper yuan, the major snow middle yuan, the heat cessation lower yuan, and the autumn equinox upper yuan; one section covers the major heat middle yuan, the major snow lower yuan, the heat cessation upper yuan, and the autumn equinox middle yuan; four sections cover the major heat lower yuan, the major snow upper yuan, the heat cessation middle yuan, and the autumn equinox lower yuan. The above is the coverage of Yin Dun nine sections over thirty-six yuan, used in the method of calculating time in the military art of the odd numbers.

Once the main elements have been determined, next check which solar term the day falls into, which symbol head it belongs to, which cycle it belongs to, and what stem is used for the starting time of the day. For example, on days of Jia or Ji, the time starts with Jiazi; on days of Yi or Geng, the time starts with Bingzi. Also consider the auspicious or inauspicious nature of the eight gates on that day, and refer to the combination of the Three Marvels and the star gates to determine the auspiciousness. If both the gates and the time are auspicious, it can be used to seek good fortune and avoid misfortune, and it will be effective in all matters. This is more accurate than the auspicious deities and other elements discussed in the daily system, such as the Azure Dragon, the Five Symbols, etc.
