On the Eight Doors Being Oppressed and Restrained

Qing (清) · Xi Mengxi (錫孟樨) · Volume 9 / 19

Charting guides: Qi Men Dun Jia Chart

It is also said that if a favorable gate is restrained by the palace it falls into, forming 'pressure,' then something that should be good cannot be accomplished; if an unfavorable gate is restrained, the misfortune and calamity become even worse. Conversely, if an unfavorable gate harmonizes with the palace it falls into, its harmful nature is reduced; if a favorable gate harmonizes with the palace it falls into, its beneficial nature becomes even more favorable. It is also said that if something evil already contains good, it is no longer considered purely evil; if something good already contains evil, it is no longer considered purely good. This is the method of distinguishing good and bad among the palaces, gates, instruments, and odd numbers.

On the Relationship of Doors and Palaces and Their Generating and Overcoming Relationships

The Qimen Dacheng says: Whenever a gate is born into a palace, it indicates that the guest side is assisting the main side. If this combination forms a favorable pattern, it is beneficial for the main side. However, even if a gate is born into a palace, if it forms an unfavorable pattern, one should still be cautious of possible hidden strategies from the other side and use it with care. Generally, only when a favorable pattern is formed can it be considered perfect. When a palace is born into a gate, it means the main side is assisting the guest side, which is suitable for showing mercy, spreading virtue, granting rewards, and pacifying the other side. It also says: The side that is born from me is called the "children." Initially, one should nurture it with kindness, and all matters should be handled gradually, as time passes, good fortune will surely come.

If the eight gates overcome the palace, it indicates that the guest force is attacking the host force. If they form a favorable combination, it benefits the guest force, and at this time it is appropriate to display military strength and show off military power. If they form an unfavorable combination, it will be disadvantageous later. If the palace overcomes the gate, it is called the host force overcoming the guest force. If they form a favorable combination, it benefits the host force, and military campaigns can achieve great victories; all plans can be successfully carried out. If they form an unfavorable combination, it will instead lead to defeat and loss.

Whenever the eight gates align with the nine palaces in the Five Phases and they are harmonious, it indicates that both the host and the guest sides are mutually compatible. For example, the Open Door gate in the Lake palace or the Shang Men gate in the Wind palace, which are instances of metal meeting metal and wood meeting wood. If these alignments are further combined with favorable configurations and the Three Marvels, everything will be very auspicious. However, if they form unfavorable configurations, or if there is a situation where the heavenly stem overcomes the earthly branch or the earthly branch overcomes the heavenly stem, along with cases of punishment, conflict, union, destruction, virtue, luck, and void, one must distinguish whether it benefits the host or the guest, each having its own good or bad implications. The above discussion regarding the palaces and gates, if they encounter a strong and favorable phase and are mutually generating, the party being generated will be very auspicious. If they encounter a weak and unfavorable phase and are overcome, the party being overcome will suffer misfortune. Conversely, if one attacks another during a weak or buried phase, the party being attacked will not suffer any misfortune. If one generates another during a strong phase, the party being generated will be very auspicious. Other situations can be similarly inferred.

On the birth, strength, auspiciousness, and inauspiciousness of stars

The Qimen Da Cheng says: When using the nine stars, one must carefully examine their relationships of generation, harmony, rest, strength, overcoming, harm, punishment, and conflict, as well as their states of fetal, tomb, death, critical, nobleman, official position, and void. This ensures that all auspicious and inauspicious factors are properly utilized, and they are flexibly applied. For example, if the star on the heaven plate overcomes the star on the earth plate, it is favorable for the guest side; if the star on the earth plate overcomes the star on the heaven plate, it is favorable for the host side; if the heaven plate generates the earth plate, it is favorable for the host side; if the earth plate generates the heaven plate, it is favorable for the guest side; if the upper and lower stars are harmonious, both the host and guest sides are favorable. Another example is when a metal star is used on the days or hours of autumn, specifically on the days of Geng, Xin, Shen, and You, to generate a water star, then the water star is auspicious; if it is used to overcome a wood star, then the wood star is greatly inauspicious. Other situations can be similarly inferred.

For instance, if our star is in its flourishing phase but is overcome by the opponent's star, we should not worry even though it seems natural to be concerned, as the outcome will remain auspicious throughout. However, if our star is in a declining or墓 phase and is overcome by the opponent's star, it will be extremely inauspicious, and misfortunes cannot be avoided. Another view suggests that when a star is in its flourishing phase but is overcome, good fortune will gradually decline. For example, if our star is in a declining or墓 phase but is assisted by the opponent's star, it indicates that good things will gradually come, endeavors will have no obstacles, and all matters will be satisfactory, leading to growth from small to great. Another example is when our star is in a declining or墓 phase but we go on to assist the opponent's star, which indicates failure, disputes, and a decline in all affairs, with losses and missed opportunities. Another case is when our star is in its flourishing phase but we go on to assist the opponent's star, leading to all matters being achieved without seeking, good things emerging, and continuous improvement. The endeavors will be great, although there may be some obstacles, ultimately leading to success. For instance, when all stars are in harmony and mutual support, any plans or endeavors will be realized smoothly.

On the method of divination using the movement and stillness of the Heaven and Earth Plates.

The "Comprehensive Manual of the Qimen" says: When divining, for static matters use the Earth Plate, and for dynamic matters use the Heaven Plate. The Heaven Plate represents the guest side, and its auspiciousness belongs to the guest; the Earth Plate represents the host side, and its auspiciousness belongs to the host. Based on this, one should seek auspiciousness and avoid misfortune. In addition, one must examine the quality of the formed pattern, carefully checking whether it enters a tomb or is weak and confined. Generally, the heavenly stem of the hour should not be able to overcome the heavenly stem of the day branch, nor should the heavenly stem of the hour be in conflict with the earthly branch of the day. This is similar to the Earth Plate not being allowed to overcome the Heaven Plate; one must carefully determine the outcome. If the stars of the Earth Plate overcome those of the Heaven Plate, this indicates self-reliance and forceful action, which may lead to no real benefit later. It is said that the side that is overcome will eventually decline, and all matters will have a beginning but no end. However, if used to seek success in official positions or fame, it brings good fortune, or if used as the host side in warfare, it can lead to victory in every battle.

On the Response of Overcoming

The book "One Insight into the Qimen" says: Whenever taking a response, within the same hour and the same palace position, the Eight Gods, Nine Stars, Three Marvels, Six Instruments, and Eight Gates each have their own responses, and there is no specific star that is taken as the main one. What is taken is merely the response of that particular hour. Generally, within an hour, there is always one star that is in command, while the other stars, if they are not in command, are only used as assistants. Any star that is not in command is considered to be the side that is being overcome, which is the standard for determining responses. For example, if this hour is peaceful and auspicious, with auspicious stars such as "Bright Hall," "Nobleman," "Azure Dragon," "Growth," "Wealth and Strength," and "Five Symbols," and if the Gate and Palace are in mutual generation, then the response concerning people would be someone who is prominent, respected, kind, and just; concerning things, it would be something beautiful, new, valuable, and delicious. If there areInauspicious Pattern (malevolent patterns), and the Gate and Palace are in mutual control, and the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch conflict, then the response concerning people would be an ordinary person, a monk or Taoist, someone with improper behavior, or a wicked person, a sick person, a disabled person, or a thief; concerning things, it would be broken objects, old objects, or defective tools; concerning smells, it would be bitter, sour, fishy, or foul. This is only a general statement; the types of things are infinite, so when taking responses, one must carefully observe the situation of the current day and hour, paying attention to the state of growth, decline, rest, and confinement, and adapt flexibly and thoroughly examine the details.

On the method of divination using the three disks

Further discussion on the method of divination using the three plates. When going out to seek good fortune and avoid misfortune, the first thing to consider is the eight gates; the eight gates are the human plate, and good or bad fortune is brought about by oneself. If the gate overcomes the palace, it is considered auspicious; if the palace overcomes the gate, it is considered inauspicious. As for construction and building houses, the first thing to consider is the nine palaces; the nine palaces are the earth plate, and such matters originate from the earth plate. Therefore, if the gate generates the palace, it is auspicious; if the palace generates the gate, it is also auspicious, but it is not suitable for mutual overcoming.

Discussing the use of trigrams' energies and forms.

Whenever the time, day, and direction of a divination align with the hexagram's energy, it is the highest level of good fortune; when they harmonize with the hexagram's energy, it is the next level of good fortune. Those that generate and support the "body hexagram" are favorable to the main direction, while those that generate and support the "used hexagram" are favorable to the guest direction. Matters falling within the inner hexagram are close at hand, while those falling within the outer hexagram are distant. Events that have already passed belong to past matters, while those yet to come belong to unmanifested matters. Matters located in the opposite palace facing each other are distant matters, and those that should be in the outer hexagram are matters involving long journeys. Therefore, first determine the essence of the matter by using the day, time, and direction to establish the primary hexagram, a process called "Earlier Heaven." Then, take the exact time of the inquiry and place it on the established direction, rotating through the twelve palaces in order to see where the stem and branch of the primary hexagram fall, which palace and which hexagram, whether they are mutually generating or controlling, whether they are in the inner or outer hexagram, whether they belong to the past or future, whether they are facing the opposite palace or correspond to the outer hexagram, or whether they encounter the wealth palace or the parents, brothers, wife, wealth, and children lines within the upper hexagram's energy. Based on these, determine whether the matter can be realized. This second step is called "Later Heaven." When a divination can skillfully apply both Earlier Heaven and Later Heaven, its accuracy is extraordinary.

On the method of divination by movement and stillness

The Qimen Duanwang says: When using the methods of Qimen divination, if the matter being divined is dynamic, one should look at the direction it is facing. If the matter is static, one should only check the Chief Symbol and the Duty Gate, and examine their relationships of generation and overcoming as well as their prosperity and strength within the hour of the divination, thereby determining whether the outcome is auspicious or inauspicious.

On the divination of success and failure based on the seasonal periods and verification through observation.

The "Comprehensive Manual of the Qimen" says: According to the seasonal periods, one can determine success or failure. Whenever something is completed, the date of its failure is already determined at the moment of its completion. The failure of objects occurs when the World Line is broken, empty, or in its critical phase. For matters such as burying a stone monument or recording documents, one must consider when the parents' line hidden beneath the World Line can be lifted, and which ten-day period can make the World Line empty. That period is the time of occurrence. In addition, one must combine the numbers of the inner and outer trigrams to determine the number of years and days. For example, in the eighth Yang Dun array at the Yiwei hour, the "Thunder over Earth" hexagram is formed. In the Yu hexagram, the World Line is the earth element of Wei. The earth element of Wei is defeated in You, critical in Si, broken in Chen, and weakened in Yin and Mao. The time of occurrence is set in the Jiashen ten-day period. Any year or month within the Jiashen ten-day period that coincides with Yin, Mao, Si, or You will correspond to the time of failure. If one wants to determine the day for opening documents or excavating inscriptions, it should be in the Jiashen ten-day period during the Zi or Wu years, months, days, or hours. This is because the water element of Zi, representing documents, is hidden beneath the World Line of Yiwei. It relies on Zi to lift it up and Wu to stir it. Moreover, in the Jiashen ten-day period, the flying trigram of Wei earth is made empty, allowing the hidden god to appear.

On the Prosperity and Decline of the Three Marvels

The "Qimen Dacheng" says: As long as the three marvels of the Heaven Plate arrive at the palace, all kinds of misfortunes and calamities can be resolved. However, the decline, strength, and burial positions of each of the three marvels are different. Considering a year, the Yi marvel is strong in spring, the Bing and Ding marvels are strong in summer. Considering a day and night, the Yi marvel is strong in the day, the Bing marvel is strong at night, and the Ding marvel is bright both day and night, especially on nights with stars, so it is said that among the three marvels, the Ding marvel is the most effective. Considering the eight directions, the Yi marvel is strong in the卯 position, is restrained by the酉 position, and is buried in the戌 position; the Bing marvel is strong in the午 position, is restrained by the子 position, and is buried in the戌 position; the Ding marvel is strong in the巳 position, is restrained by the子 position, and is buried in the丑 position. The three marvels are all used to protect Jia, but their decline, strength, and burial positions differ, so they should not be overlooked.

On the Three Tombs

The "Qimen Dacheng" says: There are three types of burial, namely day burial, hour burial, and palace burial, which should not be unknown. Day burial and hour burial are as previously explained, such as Wuxu, Renchen, and Bingxu. Wutu is buried in Xu, Renshui is buried in Chen, and Binghuo is buried in Xu, which is called "hour stem entering burial." As for palace burial, for example, if the stem and branch of the current hour is Wuzi, and the chief symbol is located in the Qian palace, the Qian palace is exactly in the territory of Xu. Since Wutu is buried in Xu, this is called "hour stem entering burial palace," also known as "value hour burial." Other cases can be inferred in the same way.

On the Two Doors of Life and Death

The *Qimen Dacheng* says: Both the Life Gate and the Death Door belong to the Earth element. Are their strength and decline the same? The answer is: The Life Gate is strong in spring, while the Death Door is strong in autumn and winter. This shows that even though they belong to the same element, their strength and decline vary with the seasons. Therefore, when using them, they should be distinguished.

Discussing two branches in the same palace

It also says: all four corner palaces each contain two earthly branches. For example, if a palace is located in the Gen palace, one must determine whether to use Chou or Yin. When the earth ghost is over these two palaces, only the branch of the current palace is considered. The method of distinguishing is: if the heavenly stem of the palace is yang, then take the yang branch within it; if the heavenly stem is yin, then take the yin branch within it. Therefore, the classic says, "Yang is similar to yang, and yin is similar to yin," which refers precisely to this principle.

Discussing the selection of divine omens and their auspicious or inauspicious nature.

The "Qimen Dacheng" says: When using Qimen to select a day for a ritual or activity, one need not avoid the Tai Sui (Year God) or the three evil stars and ominous celestial phenomena. Because "Qi" means an unexpected military force, and "Men" means a gate or door; when a favorable gate arrives at the main mountain, it is like a person entering a palace of jade and treasure, so outside disturbances cannot intrude; it is also like entering the mansion of a chancellor or a marquis, where thieves have no opportunity to act. Moreover, with the addition of the Three Marvels, it is like a monarch sitting in command internally and generals guarding the gates, creating an atmosphere where all evil stars and ominous phenomena will stay far away. Therefore, the deceased can rest in peace, and the living can enjoy auspiciousness; those evil stars and ominous phenomena are nothing to worry about.

On the Wonders of the Three Marvels in Heaven

However, the three marvels on the earth plate together with the occupant form five days, and after living with various malevolent spirits for a long time, they become familiar with each other. In contrast, the three marvels on the heaven plate suddenly appear, and the malevolent spirits immediately get startled and retreat. The three marvels on the earth plate are like permanent officials who are seen every day, so people no longer feel fear. The three marvels on the heaven plate, however, are like an inspector traveling, passing through one palace every hour. Evil people hear of it and flee far away. Therefore, the three marvels on the earth plate are not as effective as those on the heaven plate, and this indeed has profound reasons. It is not only applicable to selecting a day, but also to all uses of the qimen. Regarding the heaven plate, the yi qi is especially beneficial for the night, while the ding qi is effective both day and night, because the three marvels are symbols of the sun, moon, and stars. The classic says: When using qimen to select a day, there is no need to consider the variousInauspicious Spirit (malevolent spirits) and吉曜 (auspicious stars) that different families avoid. Everything brings good fortune and auspiciousness, leading to long-lasting descendants and boundless blessings.

The Three Marvels are the sovereigns of all deities.

The Qimen Shengling Jing says: The term "qí" refers to Yi, Bing, and Ding, which are the true rulers from above. In the heavens they are called sun, moon, and stars; on earth they are called Yi, Bing, and Ding, and they are the masters of all spirits between heaven and earth. On the morning of the first day of each month, the years, months, days, and hours established by ninety-four families, as well as three hundred and sixty spirits, generals, old age, year prohibitions, retreating stars, all bow and pay homage. Setting up gates and traveling with the presence of the Three Marvels brings much good fortune. For the five family types, when burying the dead, breaking ground, cutting weeds, making contracts, burying the dead, opening mountains, determining directions, temporary burials in the fields, relocating graves, building new tombs, opening graves, joining graves, and adding burials, if the Three Marvels are present at the mountain or facing the direction, there is no need to avoid anything.

The fortune of the mountain family, the阴府 (underworld), and the years, months, days, and hours calculated by the ninety-four families, the three hundred and sixty deities, annual prohibitions, retreating stars, the supreme year, the general, the period when the earth god rules, the days of breaking and conflicting in the three yuan and five families, the day for cutting grass, and the days conflicting with burial, all need not be avoided. All the deities retreat sixty paces away, offering blessings with clasped hands. If a grand burial or the establishment of a house obtains the Three Marvels, the descendants will certainly prosper and succeed. If one obtains the Qimen (mysterious door) when taking up a position, he will be favored by the emperor within three years. If the direction of the door obtains the Three Marvels, the descendants will certainly be appointed to official positions. If one obtains the Three Marvels in seeking an official post or taking an exam, he will certainly achieve success, be listed on the imperial examination list, and wear red official robes. If one obtains the Three Marvels in wedding ceremonies, the couple will live in harmony for a hundred years, growing old together.

On the Mechanism of Good Fortune, Misfortune, and Fate in Dun Jia

Dun Jia is the overall master of Liu Ren, and also the general principle of books from the schools of yin and yang and feng shui. It is the key to fortune and misfortune; with it, all evil spirits and malevolent forces cannot cause harm. The three marvels, Yi, Bing, and Ding, symbolize the sun, moon, and stars, and can control all evil spirits. Where the three lights are present, the land spirits remain permanently peaceful. When a country possesses the three marvels, it enjoys peace and prosperity; when a residence possesses them, it flourishes; when a tomb possesses them, it is prosperous and strong; and when one takes up a position with the three marvels, promotion is certain. If a marvel and a gate are both present, all spirits will bow and yield. If the hidden position is in the south and also extends to the north, it is favorable; if it is in the east and the western palace is constructed, it can be inferred accordingly. As long as one marvel star is present on the main mountain, all evil spirits will remain hidden. If a marvel is obtained but a gate is not, it can still be usedwith difficulty; if a gate is obtained but a marvel is not, it cannot be used. If both a marvel and a gate are present, then everything will be auspicious.

A general is the master of the lives of the entire army, and the key to determining victory or defeat in battle. The strategies for attack and assault, and the principles of advance and retreat, survival and destruction, cannot be unknown. Therefore, those skilled in attack launch their operations from the Nine Heavens, while those skilled in defense conceal themselves within the Nine Earths, thus preserving themselves and achieving complete victory. One who can discern the timing of heaven and the advantage of earth will surely win battles and conquer what is taken. To reach this level is to be called a good general. Extending this principle to all affairs of mankind, every movement and stillness, every action and encampment, has corresponding auspicious or inauspicious signs, clear as looking at the palm of one's hand. Therefore, if a practitioner does not understand these, he can only be called a fraud pretending to be an expert in divination. How can those who learn it not devote themselves entirely?

The worldly diviners rely only on the five family types that are affected by the days of conflict within the three yuan to cut grass and break the burial ground, and on the days of mutual generation to perform burial rites, and then claim these are auspicious days. Later, if there are casualties among people, deaths of livestock, and frequent misfortunes, they merely say it is a calamity sent by heaven, without realizing the true cause lies hidden within Dun Jia unnoticed. Therefore, some say: without understanding the Six壬 and Dun Jia, one should not choose a burial site for others; without understanding Dun Jia, one should not determine a dwelling place. If a diviner truly understands Dun Jia, why would he stick to the old rules of big and small tombs? A diviner who does not understand Six壬 and Dun Jia is called a fake practitioner of divination, not worth employing. Following their advice will surely lead to great misfortune.
