年與月管初主，月與日管中主，日與時管末主，其法與星象曆家分三主同。初主星當生年得力，則初主好，不得力，則初主蹇滯，中末主亦若此，而分年月日時，看命之三主，其義同也。（李虛中書）

The year pillar and month pillar govern the first part of a person's life, called "initial master" or "chuzhu"; the month pillar and day pillar govern the middle part, called "middle master" or "zhongzhu"; and the day pillar and hour pillar govern the latter part, called "final master" or "muzhu." This division is the same as the method used by star and destiny scholars who divide a person's life into three parts. Star and destiny scholars examine the stars of the initial master; if they are strong in the year of birth, the initial master period will be favorable, but if they are weak, the initial master period will be obstructed and difficult, and the middle and final masters are also judged in the same way. The system of禄命 (luo ming) uses the year, month, day, and hour pillars to divide into three masters, and the principle is the same. This passage is from Li Xuzhong's writings.

常以生月為初限，管二十五年，生日為中限，管二十五年，生時為末限，管五十年，後徹終年，以上初限值祿馬貴神，不犯空亡，截路，交退伏神，便於初限進達立身成遂。如中限值祿馬貴神天德，不犯空亡，大敗，交退伏神，便當中限成立，其末限一如前法，大凡須在生時為主，若得好時，自然成遂矣。（金書命訣）

Usually, the month of birth is considered the "initial limit," governing the first twenty-five years; the day of birth is the "middle limit," also covering twenty-five years; and the hour of birth is the "final limit," covering fifty years up to the end of one's life. If the initial limit column has auspicious deities such as "Wealth," "Post-horse," and "Nobleman," and does not suffer from "Kongwang," "Star of blockage," or retreating hidden gods, then one will achieve success and establish oneself in the first twenty-five years. If the middle limit column has wealth, post-horse, nobleman, and "Star of virtue and resolution," and does not suffer from kongwang, great defeat, or retreating hidden gods, then one will be stable in the middle twenty-five years. The interpretation for the final limit is similar to the previous ones. In general, the hour of birth is still the main focus. If the hour is favorable, success will come naturally. 凡看生旺死絕，以主本為先，次以月，又次以時，又次以胎，假如年日見生旺，月時上雖有死絕，不妨。月日生旺，即時上死絕，若主本死絕，月與時雖有生旺，不能救也。又如命上見時旺，月上雖死絕，不妨。（林開五命）

When investigating the generation, prosperity, decline, and extinction of the Five Phases, first examine the "main" and "base," which are the year pillar and day pillar, then the month, then the hour, and finally the fetal pillar. If both the year and day pillars are in a state of generation and prosperity, then even if the month and hour pillars are in decline or extinction, it will not cause any problems. Similarly, if the month and day pillars are in a state of generation and prosperity, and the hour pillar is in decline or extinction, it will also not be a problem. However, if the fundamental pillars of the year and day are already in a state of decline or extinction, then even if the month and hour pillars are in a state of generation and prosperity, it cannot be saved. For example, if the hour pillar is in a state of prosperity in the native's birth chart, even if the month pillar is in decline or extinction, it will not be harmful. This passage is from Lin Kai's "Five Lifetimes."

大凡看命，切須於年月日時上尋見用神，用神氣特達極妙。用神不得勢，福祿薄少。（天元變化書）

In general, when examining a person's destiny, one must first identify the "Useful God" among the four pillars of year, month, day, and hour. When the energy of the Useful God is clearly prominent, it is the most excellent configuration; however, if the Useful God is placed in an unfavorable position, the person's lifetime of blessings and honors will be meager. This statement is from the "Book of Heavenly Changes."

好年不如好月，好月不如好日，好日不如好時，一如生時見祿馬貴合貴食官印，不犯刑尅空亡，則少年進達。生時值天中殺，截路，空亡，十惡大敗，交退伏神，一生沉滯，更值刑害，沖破，則一生疾病，如逢敗休死絕，雜以刑尅相沖，則一生貧賤，更犯天年短夭，及諸凶殺，二十五歲以前定死，若胎數不足，值四大空亡，而惡殺有氣，無吉神助之，則襁褓中死。

A good year is not as good as a good month, a good month is not as good as a good day, and a good day is not as good as a good hour. For example, if the birth time contains "Lü" (Wealth), "Yi Ma" (Post-horse), "Gui Ren" (Nobleman), and other beneficial stars, and they are in harmony without being afflicted by "Kong Wang" (Empty), then one will achieve success at a young age and rise quickly. However, if the birth time encounters "Tian Zhong Sha" (Heavenly Harm), "Jie Lu" (Star of Blockage), "Kong Wang", "Shi'e Dabai" (Ten Evils Great Defeat), and retreating hidden gods, then one's life will be stagnant. If further afflicted by injuries, harms, clashes, and destruction, one will suffer from continuous illness throughout life. If the hour falls in a place of decline, rest, death, or extinction, and is mixed with injuries and clashes, then one will live in poverty and low status. If further afflicted by short life stars and variousInauspicious Sha (evil stars), one will die before the age of twenty-five. If the day of the胎元 (fetus origin) is insufficient and encounters the "Four Great Empty" (Kong Wang), and evil stars are in a strong position without the presence of auspicious gods to rescue, then even the infant cannot be preserved.

日者三陽之會，帝王之象。時者近侍之臣，以親帝坐，尤要得時，而時上有君臣慶會，天地德合，也以時得之，則人臣常親帝坐。若年月日時四位納音生旺之氣，或四位支干吉會之氣，或四位祿馬福貴之氣，聚於時上，謂之四位集福於帝坐，不然時上倒揭旺氣，秀氣，散在諸位，而諸位乘吉會之氣者，謂之帝坐發福於四位，夫集福於帝坐則以純厚忠信，得更發福於四位，則以聰明端直自進，然近傳之臣，切忌金木太旺，不能久任也。

The day pillar is where the three yang energies meet, symbolizing the emperor; the hour pillar is like the close attendant of the emperor, because it is adjacent to the imperial throne, so it is especially important to have a favorable time. If there are auspicious signs such as the harmonious meeting of sovereign and minister or the unity of heaven and earth in the hour pillar, one can gain blessings through the hour, and as a minister, one can often be close to the imperial throne. If the vital energies of the nayin sounds of the four pillars (year, month, day, hour), or the harmonious energies of the dry and wet branches of the four pillars, or the energies of official rank, horse, fortune, and wealth of the four pillars, all converge on the hour pillar, it is called 'the four positions gathering blessings at the imperial throne.' Conversely, if the hour pillar disperses its vital and refined energies back to the other pillars, and the other pillars are all riding on auspicious harmonies, it is called 'the imperial throne distributing blessings to the four positions.' Those who gather blessings at the imperial throne gain advancement through sincerity and trustworthiness; those who receive blessings from the four positions achieve self-reliance through wisdom and integrity. However, as close attendants, the greatest忌 is excessive strength of metal and wood, which would lead to an inability to hold office for a long time.

遁月從年，則以年為主，遁時從日，則以日為本，主勝於本，多出資蔭。本勝於主，當自卓立，主本兩勝，則富貴雙全，如主木而得卯月以乘之，本金而得酉時以乘之，謂之主本乘旺氣，如主水而得甲申、丙子、壬戌、癸亥月。本火而得丙寅、戊午、甲辰、乙巳時。主木而得己亥、辛卯、甲寅、庚寅月。本金而得辛巳、癸酉、庚申、壬申時，謂之主本還家。

To determine the month pillar, one starts from the heavenly stem of the year, so the year is considered the "main" element; to determine the hour pillar, one starts from the heavenly stem of the day, so the day is considered the "base" element. When the main element is stronger than the base, the person is likely from a noble family and benefits from ancestral influence. When the base element is stronger than the main, the person must rely on their own abilities and independence. If both the main and base elements are strong, the person will achieve both wealth and status. For example, if the year's heavenly stem is wood and the month is卯 (Mao), or if the day's heavenly stem is metal and the hour is酉 (You), this is called "main and base elements receiving strong energy." Another example is when the year's heavenly stem is water and the month is甲申 (Jiashen), 丙子 (Bingzi), 壬戌 (Renxu), or 癸亥 (Guihai), and the day's heavenly stem is fire with the hour beingBingyin (Bingyin), Wuwu (Wuwu), Jiachen (Jiachen), or Yisi (Yisi), or when the year's heavenly stem is wood and the month is己亥 (Jihai), 辛卯 (Xinmao), 甲寅 (Jiayin), or 庚寅 (Gengyin), and the day's heavenly stem is metal with the hour beingXinsi (Xinsi), Guiyou (Guiyou), Gengshen (Gengshen), or Renshen (Renshen), this is called "main and base elements returning home."

主木而得癸未月，本金而得乙丑時，主水而得壬辰月，本火而得甲戌時，謂之主本持印。四位如此，而更吉神往來，凶殺迴避，謂之主本得位也。（閻冬叟書）

For example, if the year pillar belongs to wood and the month pillar is Guiwei, if the day pillar belongs to metal and the hour pillar is Yichou, if the year pillar belongs to water and the month pillar is Renchen, if the day pillar belongs to fire and the hour pillar is Jiaxu, this is called 'zhuben chihyin', meaning the main pillar and the root each hold theStorage (storage) of the original qi. When the four pillars form such a structure, and with auspicious deities assisting and malevolent stars avoiding conflict, it is called 'zhuben de wei'. This comes from the book of Yan Dongshou.

主本係和，未生貧賤之人，時月乖違，豈見久榮之者。主本係和，相有為貴，年剋日減力也。日尅年難主貴氣，亦多屯剝。況日時俱尅於年，乖離尤甚。（鬼谷遺文）

When the year and the day harmonize, they never produce a person of lowly status; when the hour and the month are in discord, there has never been a case of long-lasting prosperity. If the year and the day harmonize and support each other, this is considered a noble configuration; if the year overcomes the day, the noble quality weakens; if the day overcomes the year, it is difficult to achieve nobility, and there are often troubles and decline. Moreover, if both the day and the hour overcome the year, the discord becomes even more severe. This passage is from the "Ghost Valley Legacy."

謂立春在十二月末，身在十二月生，而得次年春氣，占兩年氣候最好，謂之垂帶貴人。

The term "Chui Dai Guiren" refers to a situation where the beginning of the lunar new year falls at the end of the twelfth lunar month. If a person is born during this month, they are born in the old year but have already experienced the spring energy of the following year. Thus, they possess the climatic conditions of two years, making it the most favorable situation, hence the name "Chui Dai Guiren."

謂如二月末而得三月節氣，雖主富貴，終無後祿。（廣錄）三命鈐云：剩餘終生者，為無後貴人。

The term "shengyu zhong sheng" refers to those born at the end of the second lunar month but already into the third month's solar term. Such people may be destined for wealth and honor, but they ultimately lack prosperity in later life. This statement is found in the "Guang Lu." The "San Ming Qian" states that those born under the remaining qi of the previous month are noblemen who do not have descendants.

凡人命年不可尅胎，月不可尅年，日不可尅月，時不可尅日，胎不可尅時，皆以納音論之。凡命主本相尅害，而又相還者，不使相還，假令壬申癸未，元無相還，以氣散論之。（廣信集）

The fate of a person's life should not have the year branch overpowering the胎元, the month branch overpowering the year, the day branch overpowering the month, the hour branch overpowering the day, or the胎元 overpowering the hour. These are all based on the Nayin sound element of the Five Phases. If in a person's fate the year and day branches mutually overpower each other, they should originally be able to reciprocally support each other. However, if they cannot, then they should not be allowed to reciprocate. For example, Renshen and Guiwei are incompatible and cannot reciprocate, so they should be considered as having dispersed energy with no return. This passage is from the "Broad Trust Collection."

月傷時日，衣食終日區區，時日傷年，久不免於勞苦。（隱迷賦）時傷日月，家財自破。

If the month pillar harms or overpowers the day and hour pillars, one will live a life of limited resources and being overly meticulous. If the hour and day pillars harm or overpower the year pillar, one will inevitably face continuous toil and hardship. This statement comes from the "Yin Mi Fu." If the hour pillar harms or overpowers the day and month pillars, the family's wealth will gradually decline on its own.

須要不犯壞乃作福。

The various noble patterns of day and hour must all be based on the premise that the four pillars are not subjected to punishment, clash, control, or destruction. Only when the pattern itself remains undamaged can it truly bring about good fortune.

甲子日：丙寅時<居日祿>、己巳時<神白雲化主貴>、辛未時<貴>、乙亥時<目疾>。甲寅日：甲子時<高貴>、乙丑時<平>、丙寅時<貴>、戊辰時<平>、己巳時<平>、辛未時<神白雲金化木主貴>。甲辰日：乙丑時<貴主血>、丙寅時<神白雲火木化主貴>、庚午時<主血>、甲戌時<貴>。甲午日：甲子時<高>、辛未時<高>、壬申時<高>、癸酉時<孤>。

A person born on a Jiazi day is most auspicious when paired with Bingyin hour, as Yin is the "Lushu" position of Jia, meaning the day's Lushu is in its own place. When paired with Jisi hour, the Shengbai Jing says that Jia and Ji combine to form earth, indicating nobility. When paired with Xinwei hour, it also indicates nobility. When paired with Yihai hour, it suggests eye disease. A person born on a Jiayin day is most auspicious when paired with Jiazi hour, ordinary when paired with Yichou hour, auspicious when paired with Bingyin hour, ordinary when paired with Wuchen hour, ordinary when paired with Jisi hour, and auspicious when paired with Xinwei hour, as the Shengbai Jing says that metal transforms into wood, indicating nobility. A person born on a Jiachen day is auspicious when paired with Yichou hour, accompanied by blood-related issues, auspicious when paired with Bingyin hour, as the Shengbai Jing says that fire and wood transform into each other, indicating nobility, and indicates seeing blood when paired with Gengwu hour. A person born on a Jiawu day is of high rank when paired with Jiazi hour, of high rank when paired with Xinwei hour, of high rank when paired with Renshen hour, and indicates loneliness when paired with Guiyou hour.

甲申日：乙丑時、丙寅時<平>、己巳時<貴>、辛未時<神白雲金化木主貴>、壬申時、乙亥時。甲戌日：甲子時<平>、丙寅時<神白火木化主有厚福>、辛卯時<平>、乙亥時<平>。乙丑日：戊寅時<高>、己卯時<高>、辛未時<始雜後純>、甲申時<高>、乙酉時<高>、丁亥時<秀>。

A person born on a Jia Shen day is compatible with Yi Chou hour, Bing Yin hour (ordinary), Ji Si hour (indicating wealth and honor), Xin Wei hour (according to the Shen Bai Jing, metal transforms into wood and indicates wealth and honor), Ren Shen hour and Yi Hai hour. A person born on a Jia Xu day is compatible with Jia Zi hour (ordinary), Bing Yin hour (according to the Shen Bai Jing, fire and wood interact and bring deep blessings), Xin Mao hour (ordinary), and Yi Hai hour (ordinary). A person born on a Yi Chou day is compatible with Wu Yin hour (high quality), Ji Mao hour (high quality), Xin Wei hour (initially mixed but eventually pure), Jia Shen hour (high quality), Yi You hour (high quality), and Ding Hai hour (clear and refined).

A person born on an Yi Mao day is considered auspicious when paired with Bing Zi hour, Ji Mao hour, or Ren Wu hour. When paired with Ji Shen hour, the combination of heavenly stem and earthly branch transforms, leading to high status. A person born on an Yi Si day is considered auspicious when paired with Bing Zi hour, Ren Wu hour, Ji Shen hour (which is a transformation pattern), Bing Xu hour, or Ding Hai hour, all of which are favorable. A person born on an Yi Wei day is considered ordinary when paired with Bing Zi hour, but auspicious when paired with Ji Mao hour or Ding Hai hour. A person born on an Yi You day is considered auspicious when paired with Bing Zi hour, clear and refined when paired with Ji Mao hour, ordinary when paired with Ding Hai hour, and according to the Sheng Bai Jing, when paired with Geng Chen hour, the combination of Yi and Geng transforms into metal, leading to deep fortune and misfortune.

乙亥日：丙子時<化青赤主福>、庚辰時<平>、甲申時<神白雲通乙庚之化主厚福>。丙子日：壬辰時<印>、癸巳時<神白雲水化主有福不宜飲酒>、甲申時。丙寅日：己丑時<神白雲火土象主貴有血疾>、乙亥時<火土象主貴>、庚寅時<貴不久>、辛卯時、癸巳時<神白雲火化主貴而無壽不宜飲酒>。

A person born on an Ethereal Branch of Yihai is compatible with Bingzi hour, where green wood and red fire interact to bring good fortune; with Gengchen hour, the situation is ordinary; and with Jiashen hour, the "Shen Bai Jing" says that the interaction between Yi and Geng occurs, resulting in deep blessings. A person born on Bingzi day is compatible with Renchen hour, where the seal is received, and with Guisi hour, the "Shen Bai Jing" says that water is transformed, bringing good fortune, but alcohol should be avoided; it is also compatible with Jiashen hour. A person born on Bingyin day is compatible with Jichou hour, where the "Shen Bai Jing" says that fire and earth are formed, indicating high status but with a blood condition; with Yihai hour, fire and earth are formed, also indicating high status; with Gengyin hour, although high status is achieved, it does not last long; with Xinmao hour, it is also compatible; and with Guisi hour, the "Shen Bai Jing" says that fire is transformed, indicating high status but not long life, and alcohol should also be avoided.

丙辰日：庚寅時<高>、甲午時<平>、己亥時<神白雲火土化鬚髮有福只壽短>。丙午日：壬辰時<貴>、癸巳時<戒酒>、丙申時<主血火厄>、戊戌時<平>、己亥時<貴武>。丙申日：戊子時<平>、己丑時<血疾>、癸巳時<主血>。丙戌日：己丑時<高武>、辛卯時<神白雲火大主福厚>、癸巳時<戒酒>、甲午時<平>、丙申時<高>。在六丙日見己丑時主血災疾。

People born on a Bing Chen day are most auspicious when paired with a Geng Yin hour, average when paired with a Jia Wu hour, and according to the Sheng Bai Jing, when paired with a Ji Hai hour, fire and earth interact, which although may delay success and bring fortune, results in a shorter lifespan. People born on a Bing Wu day are most auspicious when paired with a Ren Chen hour, should avoid alcohol when paired with a Gui Si hour, and face blood-related calamities and fire dangers when paired with a Bing Shen hour. When paired with a Wu Xu hour, it is average, and when paired with a Ji Hai hour, it indicates high military rank and prestige. People born on a Bing Shen day are average when paired with a Wu Zi hour, face blood-related illness when paired with a Ji Chou hour, and encounter blood-related incidents when paired with a Gui Si hour. People born on a Bing Xu day are most auspicious when paired with a Ji Chou hour, face great fire power and deep blessings when paired with a Xin Mao hour, should avoid alcohol when paired with a Gui Si hour, are average when paired with a Jia Wu hour, and are most auspicious when paired with a Bing Shen hour. All six days of Bing (Bing Zi, Bing Yin, Bing Chen, Bing Wu, Bing Shen, Bing Xu) when paired with a Ji Chou hour result in blood-related calamities and diseases.

丁丑日：壬寅時<化貴>、丙午時<平>、戊申時<秀實>。丁卯日：壬寅時<貴>、甲辰時<不利陳獻>、丙午時<平>、辛亥時<平>。丁巳日：庚子時<平>、辛丑時<平>、壬寅時<平>、丙午時<平>、丁未時<夾祿>。丁未日：壬寅時<神白雲木化主貴>、丙午時、庚戌時<皆吉>。

On a Dingchou day-born person: paired with Renyin hour, Ding and Ren interact to bring prosperity; paired with Bingwu hour, it is ordinary; paired with Wushen hour, it is clear and solid. On a Dingsi day-born person: paired with Gengzi hour, Xinchou hour, Renyin hour, and Bingwu hour, it is ordinary, but paired with Dingwei hour, it forms the "Jia Lu" pattern. On a Dingwei day-born person: paired with Renyin hour, the "Shen Bai Jing" says that Ding and Ren interact to form wood and bring prosperity; paired with Bingwu hour and Gengxu hour, they are also auspicious.

A person born on a Dingyou day is paired with Rennyin hour, which according to the Shenbai Jing indicates that Ding and Ren combine to form wood, thus indicating a noble status. When paired with Jiachen hour, it is ordinary. When paired with Bingwu hour, it is also ordinary. When paired with Xinhai hour, it is ordinary. A person born on a Dinghai day is also paired with Rennyin hour, which similarly indicates a noble status due to the combination of wood. When paired with Jiachen hour, it indicates blood diseases. When paired with Bingwu hour, it is ordinary. A person born on a Wuzi day is paired with Jiayin hour, indicating nobility. When paired with Yimao hour, the Shenbai Jing says it forms the image of fire and wood, indicating nobility but a short lifespan. When paired with Dingsi hour, it indicates nobility. When paired with Wuwu hour, it is like fire in summer, which is too intense and thus fails to form a useful object. A person born on a Wuyin day can be paired with Jiayin hour or Dingsi hour. The highest pairing is with Guihai hour.

People born on a Wuchen day can be paired with Dingsi hour, Gengshen hour, or Guihai hour for clarity and elegance. Pairing with Yimao hour is said in the Shen Bai Jing to form the image of water and wood, indicating wealth but not long life. People born on a Wuwu day can be paired with Jiayin hour for a transformation of the heavenly stem and earthly branch, indicating wealth; pairing with Dingsi hour indicates high status; pairing with Guihai hour indicates wealth. People born on a Wushen day can be paired with Renzi hour for a high status, Dingsi hour for ordinary status, and Jiwei hour for wealth. People born on a Wuxu day can be paired with Yimao hour for wealth, Dingsi hour for wealth, and Jiwei hour for wealth with a moderate level.

Those born on a Ji Chou day are compatible with the Jia Zi hour, where Jia and Ji interact to indicate prosperity; with the Geng Wu hour, indicating prosperity; with the Ren Shen hour, indicating a high status; with the Jia Xu hour, indicating prosperity; and with the Bing Yin hour, according to the Shen Bai Jing, indicating a fire and earth pattern, suggesting prosperity but with a blood condition. Those born on a Ji Mao day are compatible with the Bing Yin hour, which is ordinary; with the Geng Wu hour, indicating prosperity; with the Jia Xu hour, indicating a high status; and with the Yi Hai hour, which is ordinary.
