Mutual Horizontal and Central Heaven Trigrams Harmonize

Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

The concept of "mutual exchange" refers to the situation where the heavenly stems and earthly branches of two pillars are interchanged, such as when a Gengyin year meets a Jia Shen day or hour. "Morning virtue" refers to the situation where the earthly branch approaches and supports the virtue of the heavenly stem, such as when a Yin year meets a Jia day or hour (since Jia's virtue is in Yin). If these virtuous energies all converge towards the fetal origin, it is most valuable. However, it is necessary that the five phases are not mixed, that there is no mutual conflict or dislike between them, and that the noble god supports it, which is called "receiving."

Morning clouds gather to seal the Duke's state

The term "Chao Yuan Jia He" refers to a situation where two heavenly stems that share a common earthly branch are flanked by the same earthly branch. For example, in the year Guisi, if one encounters Wuchen and Wuwu, both Wu stems combine with Gui, and the branch Si is flanked by the branches Chen and Wu. The禄 (favorable position) of Wu is precisely in Si, so the禄 is sandwiched between them. Similarly, in the year Xinsi, if one encounters Bingchen and Bingwu, both Bing stems combine with Xin, and the branch Si is flanked by Chen and Wu. In the year Jiawu, if one encounters Jisi and Jiwei, both Ji stems combine with Jiawu, and the branch Wu is flanked by Si and Wei. These are all examples of this pattern. Those who possess this configuration may be granted titles of marquis or a state.

At times, the official's fortune is auspicious, and within the day, wealth and treasures fill the hall, leading to prosperity.

For example, if someone is born on a Jisi day and gets a Bing hour, the hour's strength will support the day's ruler, bringing a nurturing energy. This forms the 'Gold and Jade Full Hall' pattern, indicating great wealth. However, there are many considerations regarding the strength of the ruler: one must determine whether it is in a declining, prosperous, failed, or dead position. If there are no auspicious deities to support it, then this person is likely to ruin their ancestors' legacy and achieve little success.

For example, a person born in the year of Jiayin (甲寅) encountering the day of Wuyin (戊寅), the earth element Wutu is weak in the branch Yin, which is called self-decline; encountering the day of Rennyin (壬寅), the water element Renshui is in the state of death in the branch Yin, which is called self-death; a person born in the year of Xinyin (辛年) encountering the day of Yiyou (乙酉) is called self-ruin; a person born in the year of Yinián (乙年) encountering the day of Yimao (乙卯) is called self-death. The term 'having auspicious deities to assist' refers to pillars such as Jimao (己卯), Jiyou (己酉), Jiazi (甲子), and Jiawu (甲午), which although also fall under self-ruin or self-death, are considered 'four simple advancing gods' and thus receive assistance from auspicious deities. The Jiayin (甲寅) itself contains refined qualities, and if the person's destiny also includes noblemen, food gods, or strong vitality to assist, it is also favorable. In conclusion, one should not stick to a single path when making a judgment.

The song says: "When the official post falls into Kongwang," how can we recognize this? We recognize it by the fact that such a person has only empty reputation and is actually ridiculous; if the official post is even sitting in a declining or sickly position, it is even worse, leading to a disgraceful and widely spread bad reputation.

People with their official luck falling into Kongwang may still attain a nominal official title or achieve a prestigious position like the top candidate in the local examination if they have other refined qualities in their destiny. However, if Kongwang coincides with a period of decline or illness, they might only end up with a nickname. If the Five Phases are even more confused, they may receive an even more derogatory nickname. This statement is from the book "Chen Yuan."

A single fortune cannot save from threefold depletion. The late Xuan Shu had a birth chart of Bingwu year, Gengzi month, Wuyin day, and Gengshen hour, and he reached the rank of Zhenglang. When he entered the Yisi destiny period, the court appointed him as the governor of Fujian's transportation affairs, but before he could take office, he died suddenly in the middle of the night. This shows that misfortune and good fortune are separate; although his chart had heavy fortune, he was unable to save himself because both water and earth were depleted in Yisi. Once the destiny period reached Yisi, there was no salvation. The rest can be inferred in the same way. This is recorded in the "Broad Records."

If you meet it, you do not meet it.

The heavenly stem Jia (甲) has its strength in the earthly branch Yin (寅). However, for someone born in the year Jiazi (甲子), encountering Gengyin (庚寅) means that the metal Geng (庚) cuts through the wood Jia (甲), thus destroying the strength even though it is in its proper position. This is called "meeting as if not meeting." Similarly, when someone with the stem Geng (庚) encounters Bingshen (丙申), or someone with the stem Yi (乙) encounters Xinmao (辛卯), or someone with the stem Xin (辛) encounters Dingyou (丁酉), the official ghost (官鬼) sits on the strength position and weakens it, so the strength cannot be used effectively. It appears to have strength, but in reality, it is useless. Other cases can be understood in the same way. This statement comes from the book Sanming Cuanju

Volume Sixteen · On Horses

The Post-horse Position Song

Those born in the years of寅, 午, and 戌 have their 「驿马」 traditionally located in 申. 申 belongs to the metal element, and it is most afraid of fire coming to control and attack it. Once controlled, their official positions become unstable, leading to frequent dismissal and decline. For example, those born in the years of Bingwu, Bingyin, and Bingxu, if they are born in the seventh month (申 month) and have the column Bingshen, the heavenly stem 丙 fire combined with the Nayin sound element fire element, creates two layers of fire to attack 申 metal. The metal horse is injured, leading to calamities and difficulties. If this horse position also falls into Kongwang, they will suffer many illnesses and misfortunes, causing endless troubles, running around aimlessly, and being trapped in the worldly affairs. Conversely, those born in the twelfth month (丑), fourth month (巳), and eighth month (酉) have the triple harmony of巳, 酉, and 丑 forming a metal trinity, so the metal horse quickly arrives here. Even if born in other months, as long as the heavenly stem carries 庚 or 辛 and the Nayin sound element belongs to metal, it is considered true metal horse. Having these two types of metal horses brings great fortune, making one a person of high rank and wearing silk robes. Those born in the year of Bingxu in the twelfth month are called 「背马」, which can also bring official honors. The column Xinchou has two layers of metal horses, and those with 六辛 at the horse position are close to the nobleman. Bingyin in the first month and Renyin in the ninth month have the horse position on Gengxu and Gengyin. If this also coincides with the禄星, then one will certainly achieve official rank and wear purple robes, not a mere empty talk. Those whose year, month, or day includes巳, 酉, 丑, and 申 will be able to receive imperial favor in the Jade Hall.

The same Shēn (horse position) can have different fortune outcomes depending on the Heavenly Stem: Jiāshēn is a horse in the position of carrying the road and empty loss, Bǐngshēn is a horse of great defeat, Wūshēn is a horse with the blessing star hidden, Gēngshēn is a horse of the celestial gate, capable of obtaining good official positions, and Rénshēn is also a horse of great defeat. These four types of horses—Rénshēn, Jiāshēn, Bǐngshēn, and Wūshēn—indicate that the owner tends to suffer from many illnesses and misfortunes, experience ups and downs in their career, and easily attract disputes. All these outcomes are manifested in the years, months, days, and hours associated with Sì (Snake), Yǒu (Rooster), Chǒu (Ox), and Shēn (Monkey).

Those born in the years of Shen, Zi, and Chen have theirThe Post-horse (Post-horse) in Yin. If Yin is occupied by Jia or Yi, it is considered good because these are wood elements that match the horse. However, if it meets Renyin, which has a Nayin sound element of metal, it will instead harm Yin wood. It is also dangerous if it falls into Kongwang or the path of the carriage. Let's take an example: a person born in Gengzi year, born in the first lunar month (Yin), and with Wuyin as one of their pillars, this is considered a hidden Post-horse, which is still usable. Wuyin's strength is in Si, and Si conflicts with Geng's strength in Shen. The conflict between strength and Post-horse causes the official and ministerial energies to become stronger. If Bingwu is present, it is a place of literary stars and celebration, and if the hour pillar has Yiwei, which is a nobleman's palace, and also carries two types of Post-horse storage, then this person is truly a hero with flourishing talents and the ability to stabilize the country. This person's hour stem Yi combines with the year stem Geng, and the Zi (rat) and Shen (monkey) have a noble connection, allowing them to reach the position of the Three Grand Ministers. However, the conflicting influences of Zi and Wei palace deities make it difficult to maintain a long-term position in high office. Nevertheless, when they reach the years of Hai, Yin, or Mao, Wei, they will naturally prosper again.

In the position of the horse represented by寅, Jiayin is the official禄 and literary star horse, Bingyin is the fortune star horse, Wuyin is the hidden horse, Gengyin is the breaking禄 horse, and RENYIN is the blockage star horse. All of these are effective when they appear in the year, month, day, or hour of亥, Mao, Wei, and寅.

Those born in the years of Snake (巳), Rooster (酉), and Ox (丑) have theirThe Post-horse (Post-horse) in亥 (Hai). Hai belongs to water, and when the heavenly stem is壬 (Ren) or癸 (Gui), they share the same element, forming a water horse, which is a sign of high status. However, it is undesirable ifWangshen (Wangshen) is positioned over the horse's position. Those born in the year of Yi (乙) or Geng (庚) who have the combination of Ding (丁) and Hai (亥), and are born in the first month of winter (October), or if their birth chart includes the water positions of Shen (申), Zi (子), and Chen (辰), then the horse's energy is strong, and they are destined to become outstanding talents in the country. For example, someone born in the year of Xinchou (辛丑) who is born in the third month, with the combination of Ren (壬) and Chen (辰), where Chen is a water reservoir, this is called the horse's warehouse. The horse has two layers of support, leading to a high status, and they can serve as scholars in the Hanlin Academy. Another example is someone born in the year of Dingyou (丁酉) who is born in the fifth month and encounters Bingwu (丙午). Bingwu'sNayin sound element (Nayin) element is water, which is a water horse meeting the auspicious god. Although they can attain an official position and salary, it is only temporary and the glory does not last long, because the water element of Bingwu'sNayin sound element (Nayin) element suppresses the禄气 (Lugui) of Ding. This results in being lonely and isolated. If the positions of Shen (申), Zi (子), and Chen (辰) appear in the year and also in the month and day, then there is no need for recommendations, and success in officialdom will naturally come about.

In the position of the horse for亥, Yihai is the horse of the Star of virtue and resolution, Dinghai is the horse of the Tianyi Nobleman, Jihai is the horse of prosperity and official rank, Xinhai is the horse of proper official rank, and Guihai is the horse of great defeat. All of these apply in the years, months, days, and hours of 申, 子, 辰, and 亥.

Those born in the years of Hai, Mao, and Wei have theirThe Post-horse (Post-horse) in Si. Si belongs to fire and shares the same energy as Bing and Ding, so having Bing or Ding in the heavenly stem is most suitable. For those born in the years of Xinwei, Xinmao, and Xinhai, if they are born in the fourth month, which is the month of Si, they can achieve remarkable success. However, if someone is born in the year of Guisi, the癸 (Gui) in the heavenly stem and the hidden water in the earth branch both suppress the fire in Si, causing the horse to be hidden and not active, and the official and seal energy also becomes ineffective. Nevertheless, since there is a noble deity protecting them, they can still gain some reputation in the world. Another example is someone born in the year of Yihai who is born in the ninth month, which is the month of Xu. Xu is a fire warehouse, and the two horse warehouses support each other with virtue, which is called 'back horse.' This allows them to hold official positions. The乙 wood and丙 fire mutually generate, thus the official seal energy is promoted. Now looking at the宝马 (fine horse) associated with Bing and Ding, if they fall on the fire positions of Yin, Wu, and Xu, the fire is particularly bright. When such a year, month, day, or hour arrives, the purple imperial edict will honorably arrive.

On the horse position of巳, Yisi is the proper禄 horse, Dingsi is the prosperous horse, Jisi is the Jiu Tian禄 warehouse horse, Xinsi is the Star of blockage (another saying considers it a Nobleman, but only half good), and Guisi is the Tian Yi hidden horse (another saying considers it a Nobleman, which is good). All of these are effective when they appear in the year, month, day, or hour of寅, 午, 戌, and巳.

These horses, if they do not encounter the bad stars such as Kongwang, Great Defeat, Break, Meeting, Retreat, and Hidden God, will certainly indicate honor and high status. If the Lu Spirit and Tianyi Nobleman are also present along with the horse, and various good stars join together, then one will hold great power and occupy a high position in government. In terms of rank, a horse in the hour pillar indicates the highest kind of honor, a horse in the day pillar indicates medium honor, and a horse in the month pillar is considered only an ordinary official. In terms of the stage of the horse, a horse in the repository position indicates success in youth, a horse in the strong position helps achieve honor in middle age, and a horse in the growth position brings fulfillment only in old age, along with a low rank and distant position. For example, wood takes亥as its growth,卯as its strength, and未as its repository, and the rest follow the same pattern.

Luolu Zi says: If one's destiny has the position of a horse, it does not necessarily mean there is actually a horse to use; although it seems to be against the favor of the official star, it does not necessarily mean there is no official star. The key is to see whether it is in a flourishing or storage position, rather than being rigid about whether it is against or supportive. The subtlety lies entirely in understanding the waxing and waning of the qi.

The Heavenly Gate Post-horse Position Song

The song says: The Heavenly Post-horse is located on the four cardinal directions of寅, 申, 巳, and 亥. If these four directions overlap in several pillars, you should be told the distinctions among them: the water horse should meet with壬 and癸, the metal horse should meet with庚 and辛, each having its own appropriate time. 甲 and乙 are wood, like forest trees blooming and flourishing in competition; 丙 and丁 are fire, like fishing lights reflecting on water, shining brightly. In this way, each of the ten heavenly stems is placed on the horse's head, and official positions are determined according to each person's destiny. This statement is from the "Golden Book of Fate."

The so-called Yimash (Post-horse) is actually the energy within the Five Phases that is active and waiting to be summoned. "Yimash" is merely a name given to it. Yin and Yang depend on each other, and energy continuously cycles with the seasons, just like the imperial government setting up relay stations for communication. When the energy is still, it is like a relay station; when it moves, it is like a galloping horse.

The trinity of Yin, Wu, and Xu forms a fire group, but within the fire there is hidden water. When Shen, the place where water is born, comes into play, it brings out the water, causing a change from the yin within the yang. The trinity of Shen, Zi, and Chen forms a water group, but within the water there is hidden fire. When Yin, the place where fire is born, comes into play, it brings out the fire, allowing it to merge and show vitality, causing a change from the yang within the yin. The trinity of Yin, Mao, and Wei forms a wood group, but within the wood there is hidden metal. When Si, the place where metal is born, comes into play, it brings out the metal, like a bellows expanding and contracting, causing the active to become still and the restrained to become expansive. The trinity of Si, You, and Chou forms a metal group, but within the metal there is hidden wood. When Hai, the place where wood is born, comes into play, it brings out the wood, allowing it to spread and flourish, causing the accumulated to disperse and the contracted to extend. This is the principle behind the four triple harmonies, each using the opposing branch as their horse.

Thus, wood, fire, water, and metal interrelate and interact, moving or resting according to the seasons, influencing each other internally and externally, and being mutually useful: when advancing, they move with the time; when retreating, they end with the time. Therefore, thosewith difficulty called the Post-horse are all of this kind, and the above is merely an example from one corner. If one can infer the other three sides from this, the principle is consistent and does not require rigidly adhering to the idea that 'Yin-Wu-Xu sees Shen, and Shen-Zi-Chen sees Yin' as the Post-horse. Any instance where fire rises from water or water descends into fire, where yin and yang interact and communicate smoothly, and where changes flow freely, all belong to the category of the Post-horse. This statement comes from the Clouds and Clouds Mirror.

Ancient people referred to the moment when the Five Phases change and move, rushing and colliding, as the Post-horse. But why is the horse of the fire element at Shen, the horse of the water element at Yin, the horse of the metal element at Hai, and the horse of the wood element at Si? The reason is that the energy of the Five Phases must begin to impact and move at the opposite positions of each other. Therefore, the horse of fire must be at the place where water begins to grow, the horse of water must be at the place where fire begins to grow, and the same logic applies to wood and metal. This explanation comes from the book "Xi Yin Shu."

Generate a horse.

The "generated horse" refers to a situation where the heavenly stem matches the earthly branch in the same element in the column of the person's birth. For example, people born in the years of Yin-Wu-Xu (Fire triad) see Geng-Shen (Metal), people born in the years of Shen-Zi-Chen (Water triad) see Jiayin (Wood), people born in the years of Si-You-Chou (Metal triad) see Guihai (Water), and people born in the years of Hai-Mao-Wei (Wood triad) see Dingsi (Fire).

Name and Position of the Horse

All cases where the Post-horse is seated upon the Food God are considered this pattern. For example, those born in the years of Jiayin, Jiawu, or Jiaxu, have their Post-horse in Shen and see Bingshen—where Bing is the Food God of Jia. This is called 'Name and Position Horse,' and it belongs to a noble pattern. The rest should be understood in the same way. This statement comes from the book 'Lin Kai Wu Ming' (the original text says 'Lin Kai Wu Ming').

The "Heavenly Court Assembly" pattern in horse divination.

The term "Ma Tian Ting" refers to the position of the horse in the heavenly stems. Those born in the years of Yin, Wu, and Xu have their horse in Si and You. Those born in the years of Si, You, and Chou have their horse in Shen and Zi. Those born in the years of Shen, Zi, and Chen have their horse in Hai and Mao. Those born in the years of Hai, Mao, and Wei have their horse in Yin and Wu. To determine this, one uses the Five Tiger遁 method to find the position of the horse. Then, one checks what heavenly stem is on that position. Next, one looks at the original禄 of that heavenly stem to see if it falls within the Tian Ting. For example, a person born in the year of Liu Ren (Six Yin) who is born in the cycle of Yin, Wu, and Xu has their horse in Shen. Using the Five Tiger遁 method, the stem on Shen is Wu. The禄 of Wu is in Si, and Si is the Tian Ting. Since the person's birth chart also contains Si, this is called "Ma Ju Tian Ting." People who fit this pattern can establish themselves in the imperial court early in life. This statement is from the "Yu Xiao Bao Jian."

The Liyu Ge says: Those who gather horses in the heavenly court can be promoted nine times within a month, advancing rapidly in their official careers.

Ma Tianting

"The Heavenly Horse" refers to the earthly branch that comes immediately before theThe Post-horse branch. The person's official position will be outstanding and prominent. This statement is from the "Three Fate Bell."

Horse of the Nine Heavens

"Ma Jiutian" is the next earthly branch following the Post-horse, indicating that the person's official position and salary are exceptionally prosperous, with continuous honors and commendations.

Horse in Jiudi

"The Post-horse at Jiudi" refers to the second earthly branch after the Post-horse, indicating a person who can hold an official position in the imperial court; even if their fate is ordinary, they can attain the rank of county magistrate or county chief. This statement is from the "Three Divine Finger Guide."

The combination of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches is called the "Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches Combination."

For example, the horse of a person born in the years of Shen, Zi, and Chen is in Yin. In the destiny, when Jia Yin and Ji Hai meet, Jia and Ji form a harmonious combination, and Yin and Hai also form a harmonious combination. When Bing Yin and Xin Hai meet, Bing and Xin form a harmonious combination, and Yin and Hai also form a harmonious combination. The same applies to other cases. Whenever such a combination of heavenly stems and earthly branches occurs, it indicates a high and solemn official position, signifying a prosperous and wealthy destiny. This statement is from the "Eight Characters Golden Book."

There is a horse and a post station.

Here, the Heavenly Stem is considered as "Ma" (horse) and the Earthly Branch as "Yi" (post station), and both must be present to form a complete combination: those born in the year of Yin-Wu-Xu see Geng-Shen, those born in the year of Shen-Zi-Chen see Jiayin, those born in the year of Si-You-Chou see Guihai, and those born in the year of Hai-Mao-Wei see Dingsi. These are all instances where the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch share the same elemental nature. For example, when Jia Wood is in its official position at Yin, the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch combine to form a single force, which is called "having a horse and a post station." The same principle applies to the other cases. Such individuals are likely to achieve success in academic examinations, receive frequent promotions, and even if they enter officialdom through family influence, they can attain high-ranking government positions.

There is a horse but no relay station, or there is a relay station but no horse.

People born in the Yin-Wu-Xu triad years see only Geng but not Shen, or only Shen but not Geng; people born in the Shen-Zi-Chen triad years see only Jia but not Yin, or only Yin but not Jia — the heavenly stems and earthly branches cannot be fully matched, which is like having a horse without a relay station, or a relay station without a horse.

Those born in the years of Si, You, and Chou see only Gui but not Hai, or only Hai but not Gui; those born in the years of Hai, Mao, and Wei see only Ding but not Si, or only Si but not Ding. People in these situations are mostly appointed to posts such as supervisors or inspectors who travel around frequently. If they are ordinary commoners, they are also intelligent and quick-witted, but they tend to be especially busy and hardworking.

A single tree ties two horses.

People born in the Yin-Wu-Xu cycle often have the Bingshen combination in their destiny, those born in the Shen-Zi-Chen cycle often have the Gengyin combination, those born in the Si-You-Chou cycle often have the Jihai combination, and those born in the Hai-Mao-Wei cycle often have the Guisi combination. These are all cases where the heavenly stem of the horse column overcomes the earthly branch. Such people tend to be easily startled, prone to suspicion, and experience many dangerous situations throughout their lives. If four horses appear together in the hour column or the year column, it is called 'Swift Cavalry Rushing in the Army,' which instead indicates receiving titles and honors. This statement comes from the 'Broad Trust Collection.'

Heavenly Horse, the noble deity

If the properThe Post-horse is not found in the year's branch, use the Five Tiger遁 to determine the position of the horse. Look at which heavenly stem is revealed in that position. If this heavenly stem is accompanied by the Tianyi Nobleman, and the heavenly stem of the Nobleman is also found in the horse position, then it is called "Heavenly Horse Nobleman." For example: For those born in the years of Hai, Mao, and Wei, the horse is in Si. If someone is born in the year of Ji Ding, using the Five Tiger遁 to determine the position of Si reveals Yi. The nobleman of Yi is in Shen and Zi. If the person's chart includes Ren Zi or Ren Shen, and the nobleman of Ren is in Si, then the noble energy returns to the horse position. Those who fit this pattern are of high rank, not less than third grade. If it is a common pattern, the rank should be reduced accordingly. This saying comes from the "Yuzhao Baodian."

The Example of a Noble Horse

An example of the combination of the Nobleman and the Post-horse is as follows: For those born in the Fire triad (寅午戌), if on their People's Day and in their hour they have Yiwei or Guiwei, for those born in the Metal triad (巳酉丑), if they have Renxu or Bingxu, for those born in the Water triad (申子辰), if they have Guichou or Jichou, and for those born in the Wood triad (亥卯未), if they have Jiachen or Gengchen, then the earthly branches of these four groups all fall exactly one zhi before their respective Post-horse, and the heavenly stems carry a noble quality, so they are called noble horses.

Horse Wealth Repository

"The 'Horse Wealth Repository' is derived from the earthly branch that is the墓 (burial place) of the element that the驿马 (post-horse) overcomes. For example, if the horse is in申 (Shen), which belongs to metal, metal overcomes wood, and thus wood is the wealth of the horse. Wood is buried in未 (Wei), so Wei is the wealth repository of this horse. If a person encounters this, it indicates that they will travel extensively throughout their life and be able to accumulate wealth wherever they go. This statement is from《Three Fate Bell》."

South of the Fire Trigram, the horse is bright.

Those who discuss fate often say: the horse of the year of Chen is in Si, the horse of the year of Chou is in Hai, the horse of the year of Chen is in Yin, and the horse of the year of Xu is in Shen. But they do not know that the four branches Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei all belong to the earth element, and earth takes its growth place as the horse. Therefore, Dongfang Shuo said: those born in the years of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei have their horse flying in Wu. This is called "the horse of the southern fire element." When encountering such a horse, the person most prefers the conflict between Zi and Wu. The conflict signifies the horse being whipped. At this time, whether the blessing god is light or heavy, it counts as a qualified pattern with official status. This statement comes from "The Fate of the Horse's Offspring."

Flying Horse

The so-called "Flying Horse" refers to the movement of the Day Branch to the Hour Branch: on days of寅 or午, the hour of申 is considered; on days of申 or子, the hour of寅 is considered; on days of巳 or酉, the hour of亥 is considered; on days of亥 or卯, the hour of巳 is considered. For days of辰,戌, 丑, or未, the hour of午 is considered. If the heavenly stems are useful and do not mutually control each other, it indicates success and prominence. This statement is from the "Shen Bai Jing."
