瑩和尚注云：禽分三十六位，支列一十二辰，次而布之，一辰三獸，胎生元命，亦如甲子生、月癸酉，胎建甲子元命是也。又如乙丑金命人，月居己卯，胎建庚午土，以土生金二說，並詳其意不遠。

Ying和尚 explains that the study of star and animal divination divides flying birds and beasts into thirty-six positions. The Earthly Branches are arranged into twelve zhen, distributed in sequence, with each zhen corresponding to three animals. The concept of "fetus birth and original destiny" refers to the determination of the fetal element. For example, a person born in the Jiazi year, with a birth month of Guiyou, when traced back, the fetal element is also Jiazi. The fetal element and the original destiny share the same pillar, which is one example. Another example is someone with the Nayin sound element of metal in Yichou, whose birth month falls on Jimao, and when traced back, the fetal element is Gengwu with the Nayin sound element of earth. Earth generates metal, so the fetal element nurtures life, which is another example. These two explanations, when examined closely, are not very different in meaning.

王氏注云：今談命者，或不以胎月為意，蓋言不如日時得之獨也，然胎月是四柱根苗，日時雖緊，若不來犯破胎月，胎月或承旺氣祿馬之處為福尤多也。或日時吉而為胎月所犯，則歸於無用，

Wang's commentary says: nowadays, those who discuss fate do not always pay attention to the month and day of birth, because the month and day are not as effective as the day and hour. However, the month and day are the roots of the four pillars. Although the day and hour are important, as long as the day and hour do not conflict or destroy the month and day, and the month and day are exactly in a position of strength or sitting on the 'Lushu' or 'Yimashu', then the fortune will be especially deep. Conversely, even if the day and hour are favorable, once they are conflicted by the month and day, everything will be wasted and of no use.

今人以約法取胎，未為精當，且戊子生甲寅月，便以乙巳為胎，殊不明有閏無閏。凡是貴命受胎，定在三百日，有一法取之簡要，只以當生前三百日為十月之氣，乃是受胎之正也。譬之甲子日生，便以甲子日為受胎之日，蓋五六計三百日也。看其生日是在何月而取之，則閏在其中矣。

Modern people use a simple formula to calculate the conception date, but it is not accurate. For example, if someone is born in the year Wuzi during the month Jiayin, they are all considered to have a conception date of Yisi, regardless of whether there was a leap month in between. All auspicious destinies are determined to be conceived on the 300th day. There is a simple and accurate method: just consider the three hundred days before birth as ten months, and that day is the actual conception date. For example, if someone is born on a Jiazi day, their conception date is the previous Jiazi day, because the cycle of sixty Jiazi repeats five times to make three hundred days. Then check which month this day falls into to determine the month, and the leap month is naturally included in this calculation.

胎生元命藍注，如子生得子胎，丑人得丑胎，此說未盡善，且如辛未人得人壬辰月，以癸未為胎，辛未土受癸未木制為身鬼，何以謂之胎生之命也。

Regarding the concept of "tai sheng yuan ming" or "twinning origin of life," Lan's commentary suggests that those born in the year of Zi receive the Zi胎 and those born in the year of Chou receive the Chou胎, but this explanation is incomplete. For example, a person born in the year of Xinwei encountering the month of Renchen would result in Guiwei as the taiyuan. The nayin sound element of Xinwei belongs to earth, yet it is controlled by the nayin sound element of Guiwei, which belongs to wood, making it a "ghost" that overcomes the person. How can this still be called the life coming from the womb?

所謂胎生元命者，不必將以子人子胎，丑人丑胎，但以胎中五行來生我元命者是也。胎為父母之象，胎中五行來生元命者，知其人是受蔭貴家之命也。或胎與元命五行相尅，兼處六害之地，縱使日時為福，亦主孤獨自立，鬼谷子曰：胎中如有祿，生在貴豪家，或值空亡中，貧窮起嘆嗟，蓋謂此也。三獸者以年取月，以月取胎，觀三處承屬之獸，有無傷啖刑尅以定門宗之出處也。（珞琭子）

The true "tai sheng yuan ming" does not necessarily require those born in the year of Zi to have a Zi tai yuan, or those born in the year of Chou to have a Chou tai yuan. As long as the five elements of the tai yuan can generate the original destiny, it is considered valid. The tai yuan symbolizes the parents; if the five elements of the tai yuan can generate the original destiny, it indicates that the person is born into a family with ancestral blessings and noble origins. If the tai yuan and the original destiny have conflicting elements and also fall in the "liu hai" (six harmful positions), then even if the day and hour form good fortune, it will lead to loneliness and the necessity of establishing one's own household. Guiguzi said: if the tai yuan carries "lu" (favorable position), the person is born into a family of power and wealth; if the tai yuan falls in "kongwang" (void), the person will be poor and destitute, sighing constantly. This is exactly the meaning conveyed. The so-called "san shou" (three beasts) refers to taking the month pillar from the year pillar, and the tai yuan from the month pillar, examining the three positions' assigned animals and stars to see if they have mutual consumption or conflict, thereby determining the person's family background and clan origin. This passage is from "Luolu Zi."

沉芝云：胎生元命怕沖胎，注云：如庚辰人復見庚辰是也，最忌沖刑，日時破害尅剝，或朝殺聚福其上，愚賤凶也。福聚純粹則富貴。

Chen Zhi said: Those born with a胎元 (fetal origin) that is the same as their heavenly stem and earthly branch are most vulnerable to being冲 (conflict) or犯 (offend). The commentary explains: For example, someone born in the year Gengchen (庚辰) with a胎元 also Gengchen, if such a repetition in the same column is subjected to conflict, punishment, or broken by the day and hour, it is dangerous. If all theInauspicious Sha (evil influences) gather on the胎元, it indicates a dull and lowly fate with danger. Conversely, if only pure福神 (auspicious deities) gather on the胎元, it indicates wealth and honor.

假令甲子年、丙寅月、丁亥日、己酉時、胎月丁巳、入胎日壬寅、受氣甲辰，餘皆倣此。又云：夫人處三才之中，稟五行之氣，氣聚而形成，天地交合，化生萬物，欲知其氣所出，且先定其生時，遁取時之支合干，得何支干。譬如辛卯年十二月辛丑、丙戌日、己亥時，用己合甲、亥合寅，即知是甲寅，納音水為胎氣，胎氣屬水，其人形圓肥，亥時水得臨官，一生榮樂。

For example, a person born in the year of Jiazi, month of Bingyin, day of Dinghai, and hour of Jiyou, has a fetal month of Dingsi and a fetal day of Rennyin. The moment of conception is Jiachen, and the moment of qi reception is Jiayin. The rest of the destinies are calculated in the same way. The book also says: a person exists within the three elements of heaven, earth, and humanity, receiving the qi of the Five Phases. Only when the qi converges can a form be formed. When heaven and earth interact, they generate all things. To know where a person's qi comes from, first determine his birth time, then use the method of concealment to find the matching branches and stems of the hour and the stem of the hour. For example, a person born in the year of Ximao, month of Xinchou, day of Bingxu, and hour of Jihai: the stem Ji combines with stem Jia, and the branch Hai combines with the branch Yin, so it is known that the combination is Jia Yin. The Naiyin sound element of Jia Yin belongs to water, which is his fetal qi. Since the fetal qi belongs to water, his body shape is round and plump. The hour of Hai is also the officialdom place of water, so he will have a prosperous and peaceful life.

又丙戌日生在當年閏二月二十一日，辛卯受胎，丙辛合，卯戌合，胎中帶鳳凰支，官居眾宰，此是晏相命，又累其日至十二月二十一日逢丙戌，得三百日，除四介月小，盡實二百九十六日，合上隔胎有隔，餘命倣此。

A person born on a Bingxu day was conceived on the 21st day of the leap second month of that year, which was a Xinmao day. Bing and Xin are compatible, and Mao and Xu are compatible, so the person was born with the branch of the phoenix. Therefore, he reached a high official position, which was the case with Yan Shu, a famous minister of the Song dynasty. Counting the days from the 21st of the leap second month to the 21st of the twelfth month, which again fell on Bingxu, totals 300 days. Subtracting four small months, the actual number is 296 days, which matches the number of 'upper separation'—this shows that the number of days in the womb is graded. The rest of the birth dates are calculated in the same way.

二百九十六日、二百八十六日為上隔。二百七十六日、二百六十六日為中隔。二百五十六日、二百四十六日為下隔。

From conception to birth, if the actual number of days is 296 or 286, it is called "upper interval" (上隔); if it is 276 or 266 days, it is called "middle interval" (中隔); if it is 256 or 246 days, it is called "lower interval" (下隔). The higher the interval number, the more abundant the qi received at birth.

大凡人胎數長，壽亦必長，胎數短，壽必短，常以受胎隔零數為壽限，遇德卻於零數增之，遇殺於零數減之，如正月生，四月受胎，此舉大綱，不必堅執其月，隨其閏行，但於受胎月尋取受胎日，皆以本生日支干相合取之。（金書要訣）

Generally, those with a long gestation period tend to live longer, while those with a short gestation period tend to have shorter lifespans. Usually, the remainder of the gestation period is taken as the number of years for lifespan. If the person's fate encounters auspicious deities like the Star of Virtue and Resolution, the remainder is added to the lifespan; if encountering malevolent influences, the remainder is subtracted. For example, someone born in the first lunar month is generally considered to have been conceived in the fourth month of the previous year. This is a general guideline and not a strict rule, as it may vary with the presence of a leap month. As long as the month of conception is identified, the day of conception is determined by finding the day stem and branch that matches the person's birth day stem and branch. This passage is from the "Essential Secrets of the Golden Book."

神白經云：或有不足月生者，或有出月生者，如何取的，曰不然，胎月者，乃天地父母會而始合，造化之月也。物豈無始，往往不曾窮其奧旨，得其妙論，所以失也。術曰：受胎之日，與所生日為天地合，人乃方生，若受胎之月無是日，故有出月也，又術曰：胎與四柱交併即有異母。太乙降誕定經引甘氏經云：胎與生日之干合，為受胎日，於受胎月中尋其日辰，若月內無，則推後一兩月尋之。

The Shen Bai Jing says: Some people are born before their due month, while others are born after their due month. How then can we determine their fetal origin? The answer is that this is not the case. The fetal month is the month when heaven and earth first meet with the parents, and when the process of creation begins. How can there be anything without a beginning? People often fail to thoroughly investigate the profound meaning or obtain the correct theory, hence they make errors in calculation. The method states: The day of conception must align with the day of birth to form heaven and earth in harmony, thus enabling a person to be born. If the month of conception does not contain that particular day, then the person is born after the due month. The method also states: If the fetal origin and the four pillars overlap and appear together, it indicates that the mother is not the legitimate mother. The Tai Yi Generation of the Son Classic cites the Gan school's teachings: The day that matches the heavenly stem of the birth day is the day of conception. To find the day of conception, look for that day within the month of conception. If that day is not present in that month, then look for it in the following one or two months.

人受天地陰陽之氣，形體俱足然後生，故在胎三百日乃成，則胎中所受之氣，安得不論，如納音屬金年，懷胎即受金氣為形，或次年屬木，即受金木氣也。故遇金木氣得地，且如乙丑年三月受胎，至次年丙寅正月初一二間生，安得便作火命看，金氣多而火氣淺故也。是須通達造化之理，然後可以語此。

A person inherits the qi of heaven and earth and yin and yang, and only when their form is fully developed do they take birth. Therefore, a fetus must complete three hundred days in the mother's womb before it takes shape. If this is the case, how can the qi received in the womb be disregarded? For example, if a person is conceived in a year of Nayin metal, then during the period of pregnancy they first receive the qi of metal and thus form their body. If the following year is a year of Nayin wood, then they also receive the qi of wood in addition to that of metal. Therefore, when determining a person's destiny, one must consider whether the qi of metal and wood is in harmony with the environment. Another example: if a person is conceived in the third month of the year Yichou, and is born on the first or second day of the first lunar month of the following year Bingyin, how can they be simply considered as having the fire element? Because they have received more metal qi and the fire qi is still shallow. This point can only be understood by those who grasp the principles of creation and transformation.

今市卜者，止據古人歌訣推理，所以多不准也。予自得此說於一老先生，以此論命，多人得四柱所不可能推處或云勿用胎元者，豈謬論耳。又云：胎氣不深者，不能耐久，發即易休，更看納音為何，謂如金年受胎，逢土年生即好，若金年受胎，火年生，即不堅固也。又云：胎月見貴，必受福廕。（希尹書）

Nowadays, fortune tellers on the streets only follow the old rhymes mechanically, so their predictions are mostly inaccurate. My method comes from an old gentleman, and using it to analyze a person's fate often reveals things that the traditional four pillars method cannot. Some people say that the fetal origin (胎元) does not need to be considered, which is a wrong view. The book also says that people with weak fetal energy will not have lasting good fortune; once they become successful, they tend to decline quickly. It is also necessary to check the nayin sound element. For example, if someone was conceived in a year of metal and born in a year of earth, it is good, but if conceived in metal and born in fire, the foundation is not solid. It also says that if the fetal month shows the presence of a nobleman (贵人), the person will certainly inherit the blessings from their ancestors. This statement comes from the book by Xi Yin.

郭景初引陳昉說云：凡求胎月遇貴者，若今年受胎，今年生者，隨今年太歲干求之，若去年受胎，今年生者，隨去年太歲干求之，胎月遇去年貴者慢於今年貴也。又云：康子詳曰：雖去年受胎，便以今年太歲為主。未知屬是？

Guo Jingchou cites Chen Fang's statement: when calculating whether there is a 'Nobleman' on the day of conception and birth, if the person was conceived and born in the same year, use the heavenly stem of the current year's Great Sovereign to determine the Nobleman; if conceived in the previous year and born in the current year, use the heavenly stem of the previous year's Great Sovereign. If the day of conception and birth meets the Nobleman of the previous year, its effect is slower compared to meeting the Nobleman of the current year. There is another view: Kang Zi Xiang believes that even if conceived in the previous year, the current year's Great Sovereign should be used as the main reference. It is still uncertain which of the two views is correct.

凡推胎月知人貴盛者，謂驛馬建祿在胎月也，假令甲子人十月生，胎月在寅，甲子人祿馬俱在寅，又寅與亥合，是生月與胎月祿馬俱合也，又陽命難順行，為向祿馬，干祿至亥為長生，支命到亥為臨官，此人三十以前必超越，但亥上空亡少年多厄，若胎月在驛馬後二辰亦貴。假令丁亥人十一月生，以亥人驛馬在巳，二月受胎，是馬後二辰，又祿干是丁火，十一月生建祿胎也，他準此推之。（三命指掌）

Anyone whose prosperity can be seen from their birth month and year is said to have the 'Post-horse' and 'Established Wealth' exactly falling on their birth month and year. For example, a person born in the year of Jiazi in the tenth lunar month, with their birth month falling on寅: the wealth and post-horse of Jiazi both fall on寅, and寅 is in harmony with亥. This means the birth month and the birth year's wealth and post-horse are in harmony. For yang destiny, the progression is smooth and leads towards wealth and post-horse. The heavenly stem Jia's wealth is at亥, and the earthly branch's destiny reaches亥 as officialdom. Such a person will certainly stand out before the age of thirty. However, if亥 is marked by 'Kongwang', there will be many misfortunes in youth. If the birth month falls two chens after the post-horse, it also indicates prosperity. For example, a person born in the year of Dinghai in the eleventh lunar month: the post-horse of the year of Dinghai is at巳, and the birth month is in卯, which is two chens after巳. The heavenly stem Ding belongs to fire, and being born in the eleventh lunar month is the birth month of established wealth. Other destinies are calculated in the same way. This passage is from the 'San Ming Zhi Zhang'.

凡命以胎元論受氣清濁，如胎元支干納音得地，定小年賢明。古詩云：胎中清氣旺運連，少年為性必須賢。如胎元無氣，四柱不相入，五行不相生，主為性愚懵，古詩云：胎元無氣殺神虛，一世為人性更愚。

When judging a person's destiny, one must use the胎元 to determine whether the qi received is clear or turbid. If both the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the胎元 are in a favorable position and their nayin sound element is also well-placed, then the person will certainly be intelligent and virtuous in youth. An ancient poem says: The qi received in the womb is clear, and if it is further supported by a prosperous period, the person's character in youth will certainly be virtuous. If the胎元 has no qi and is incompatible with the four pillars, and the five phases do not mutually generate, then the person's nature will be foolish and confused. An ancient poem also says: If the胎元 has no qi and the malevolent spirits are floating and unstable, the person will be even more dull throughout their life.

凡胎元被年月日時刑、沖、破、害、帶殺、空亡，皆主破祖，若時日好，雖破而中末主當自營立與旺，不可與時日同位，主平生災滯，若更同干，主疾病或為廢人，有破無成。古詩云：時臨胎氣干莫同，此地同之禍必逢，名利縱然微得意，四肢不免疾相攻。對胎破了元無福，此是平生失路翁。（時胎互破，平生不立也。）

Any birth chart where the fetal pillar is harmed by the year, month, day, or hour through刑, 冲, 破, or 害, or is accompanied byInauspicious Sha and 「Kongwang」, indicates the destruction of ancestral fortune. If the day and hour pillars are strong, even though the fetal pillar is harmed, the person can still establish their own business and rebuild their fortune in middle and old age. However, the fetal pillar must not be in the same position as the day or hour pillar; if they are the same, it indicates a lifetime of illness and stagnation. If the heavenly stem is also the same, it means the person will be plagued by illness and may become disabled, with nothing accomplished. An ancient poem says: When the hour pillar is connected to the fetal pillar, the heavenly stem must not be the same; if they are the same, misfortune will surely come. Although one may briefly gain fame and fortune, the body will inevitably suffer from illness and pain. Another saying goes: When the hour pillar directly conflicts with the fetal pillar, the original fortune is destroyed, and such a person will be a lost old man all their life. The original commentary says: Those whose hour and fetal pillars conflict will never be able to establish themselves in life.

寸珠尺璧云：凡胎與年不合，主骨肉不合，被年沖刑破害損祖，甚者離居。神白經云：胎與日時同位，禍多福少，又云：對胎破了天元位，應作艱辛失路人。沖胎破祿也。

The book "Cun Zhu Chi Bi" says: If the fetal origin does not harmonize with the year pillar, it indicates that close relatives and family members will not get along well; if the fetal origin is conflicting, harmed, broken, or harmed by the year pillar, it will damage the family's ancestral property, and in severe cases, the person may have to leave home and live elsewhere. The book "Shen Bai Jing" says: If the fetal origin shares the same position with the day or hour pillar, there will be more misfortunes and fewer blessings. It also says: If the heavenly stem directly opposes the fetal origin and breaks the heavenly stem position, this person is destined to be someone who faces hardships and confusion in life—what is called "chong tai" refers to breaking the "lu" position as well.

凡胎元在六陽位，被時沖破，主父是過房，身卻是的子，古詩云：胎宮陽干共陽支，時剋或沖破不奇，雖是親身的養子，父母應須是外兒。胎元在六陰宮被時沖破，更在暴敗上，及納音無氣於年者，母多是娼尼婢妾，不然過房。古詩云：胎低支克母不正，更逢時殺是乾生。如胎元無氣，與年同位，亦主父母不正，不然克陷。

If the fetal palace falls on a position of six yang and is attacked by the time pillar, it indicates that the father is adopted, while the person himself is the biological son. An old poem says: if the fetal palace is paired by a yang stem with a yang branch, and is attacked or broken by the time pillar, it is not auspicious; although the person is the biological son, the parents' generation must be adopted from another family. If the fetal palace falls on a position of six yin and is attacked by the time pillar, and also sits on 'bào bài' (sudden decline), and the nayin element has no strength relative to the year pillar, then the mother is most likely from a background of prostitute, nun, or servant, or else she is adopted. An old poem says: if the fetal position is low and the earthly branch attacks it, the mother's background is improper, and if anotherInauspicious Sha (malevolent star) appears in the time pillar, it is even more likely that she is from another family. If the fetal palace has no strength and shares the same position as the year pillar, it also indicates that the parents' background is improper, or else it indicates the loss of close relatives.

凡胎元帶時羊刃、年劫殺、日破碎者，主生下便剋父母，可抱養，及父母不見生，如四柱羊刃劫殺夭傷破碎，元辰往來於胎上，主損夭或襁褓中亡也。

Any child whose胎元 is accompanied by the 'Yangren' from the time pillar, the 'Jiesha' from the year pillar, and the 'Star of fragmentation' from the day pillar is destined to harm their parents from birth. Such children may be adopted by others. Some parents may never even see their child born. If the 'Yangren', 'Jiesha', 'yao shang', and 'Star of fragmentation' along with the 'Yuanchen' all intersect in the胎元, it indicates serious injury or early death, even passing away while still in the swaddling clothes.

凡命以胎元主壽，時主末主，若胎時支干納音相生，不刑戳者，必壽至八九十之外，古詩云：時為末主胎為壽，盡在末年五十後；帝坐朝胎生氣誥，看取壽年多老耄。（廣信錄）三命提要云：古人以胎息定壽長短，予驗之在納音，若月日時在身生旺臨官上主壽，值鬼則夭折。

When examining a person's destiny, the胎元 determines their lifespan, and the time pillar governs their later years. If the dry and branch of the胎元 and the time pillar are mutually generating and do not conflict or harm each other, they are likely to live beyond ninety years. An old poem says: the time pillar governs the later years, and the胎元 governs lifespan; these predictions are verified in the later years after fifty. If the imperial seat (the day pillar) faces the胎元 and the life qi is connected, it shows that the person is likely to live long. This passage comes from the "Broad Trust Record." The "Essentials of Three Lifetimes" says: ancient people used the concept of胎息 to determine lifespan. From my verification, the key lies in the nayin sound element. If the month, day, and time pillars all fall in the person's birth and officialdom positions, it indicates a long life; if they fall on the "ghost" positions that harm the person, it indicates a short life.
