Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

Leave it empty and ready for use.

A person who suddenly rises from long-term stagnation and achieves extraordinary fortune, or suddenly ascends from poverty to prominence and receives promotion beyond their station, is often due to the stream year and big destiny cycle precisely completing the missing parts of their birth chart. The concept of "virtual waiting for use" refers to a situation where the birth chart has gold, wood, water, and fire all present but lacks earth, or has heavenly stems of yi, xin, and ding but lacks gui, or has jia, bing, and geng but lacks ren, or has branches of chen, xu, and chou but lacks wei, or has卯,酉,午 but lacks子, or has寅,申,亥 but lacks巳. It also includes cases where there is "Tianyi Nobleman" but no "Star of Officialdom," or has official stars and seal marks but lacks food god, or has jia and wu but lacks geng, or has bing and ding but the position of yi is empty. It also includes situations where theLiu He, 四库, and Triple Harmony patterns interact, and only one element is missing to form a noble god or the Lu Spirit. All these situations require the stream year and big destiny cycle to arrive and complete the missing element, thus making the destiny complete. This statement comes from the "Yan Dongshou Book."

In general, when examining a person's destiny, if the foundation is strong and the branches are flourishing, and it is supported by the energy of the month's stem, forming a solid structure, with energy present but not broken or destroyed, then even if the stream years and great years have punishments, conflicts, clashes, andInauspicious Sha (evil spirits) attacking, the calamities will certainly be resolved and the consequences will be light. Conversely, if the destiny structure is not solid from the beginning, and the month's stem is also wasted or lost its energy, then even a slight impact from the stream years and great years will lead to serious disasters. Whenever the great years and stream years combine with the birth day pillar and time pillar in a harmonious way, success is certain. If it also coincides with the refined energy of the birth month, which completes the deficiencies of the destiny structure, it becomes even more important.

When examining a person's big years, one must carefully examine the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the current year's sovereign year and the corresponding nayin sound element, and determine the fortune or misfortune they bring. If the heavenly stem is inharmonious, it indicates misfortune from superiors or elders; if the earthly branch is inharmonious, it indicates misfortune from subordinates or juniors; if all three—the heavenly stem, earthly branch, and nayin—are inharmonious, it is called "respect and subordination both fighting," which is extremely bad, with nine out of ten cases resulting in disaster. If the four pillars of the birth chart contain characters that are beneficial to me, the flow year and big year should move towards them for good fortune, and if they move away from them, it will be bad. If the four pillars contain characters that are harmful to me, the flow year and big year should move away from them for good fortune, and if they move towards them, it will be bad.

All those who have long been prosperous will experience a halt when their stream year and big destiny meet the "breaking of official salary" (破禄). This is because they have reached the peak of their prosperity. Those who have long been idle will regain activity when their stream year and big destiny meet the "food god" (食神). This is precisely the year when the food god is in command. If the stream year and big destiny both bring the food god and a criminal aspect, it turns into a凶 (adverse) situation. For years that are destined to involve mourning attire, if the "white clothes" (白衣) and "heavenly ghost" (天鬼) twoInauspicious Sha (adverse stars) press down upon them, one should carefully examine by matching the palace positions with the year, month, day, and hour: if theInauspicious Sha falls in the parents' palace and the stream year's sovereign also conflicts and confronts the big destiny, it indicates a heavy mourning. If theInauspicious Sha falls in the brothers', descendants', or wife's palace, it should be judged according to the corresponding palace. TheInauspicious Sha of the stream year such as the mourning-and-condolence spirit (丧门), guest (吊客), white tiger (白虎), and disease symbol (病符) should also be taken in the same way.

During a major period of life, if the two deities representing misfortune and fortune both gather at the native's birth position, the person may suddenly die while feeling content and satisfied. This is because both misfortune and fortune are pulled too tightly. When these two forces collide with the current year's sovereign star, if they are further pressed by other factors, there is a risk to life. If combined with time limits for calculation, the prediction becomes more accurate. Any major period that is pressed or attacked by the current year's sovereign star, or if the major and minor periods clash and control the position of the native's birth, indicates disaster. If two branches are connected at the ends and enclose a third, this is called 'supporting the fortune', and such a pattern should be cautious of poisoning or sudden death.

Whenever the current year's stem collides directly with the natal year's stem, this is called "Ying Tou Sha" (head-on clash). For women, their small years move in reverse, so they often encounter this. For men, if their large years move in reverse and collide with it, the consequences are especially severe. This indicates calamity within a single year. If the collision occurs at the positions of "Fan Yin," "Fu Yin," or "Kong Wang," it signifies death. If both the large and small years overlap with the natal destiny's death, tomb, and extinction positions, one must also consider whether the current year's stem harms the natal destiny: if it does, it indicates serious mourning; if not, although there may be disaster, it is not severe. However, in any case, one must not depart from the fundamental birth hour for judgment.

Whenever the great cycle reaches the position of Kongwang and the place ofInauspicious Sha, at the critical moment when something is about to happen but has not yet occurred, it is most dangerous if the small cycle and the current year's Tai Sui coincide and clash. This is a certain death scenario. Additionally, some people die before the two cycles overlap, some suffer misfortune in the year of overlap, and others experience misfortune in the year after the overlap. This is mostly due to the current year's Tai Sui causing trouble, combined with the original八字 four pillars already being in a state of danger and instability.

For example, a person born in the Jiazi year has the Jia stem's luck in the寅 (Yin) position. Counting five positions forward from寅 leads to未 (Wei), which is called the "Luzhai" (Lucky Residence). Counting five positions forward from the Zi (子) in the birth year leads to巳 (Si), which is called the "Mingzai" (Destiny Residence). If the big or small years (dazheng and xiaozheng) or the flow year (liunian) reach the Luzhai or Mingzai, the person will face misfortune. If the flow year's sovereign (tai sui) reaches the residence palace, it indicates misfortune for women and children, and the household will be unsettled. At this time, moving house and relocating can turn the situation into good fortune. Another example is someone born on a Renxu day, in a Wushen month, on a Wuchen day, and at a Dingsi hour. His birth day is exactly on the Luzhai. If the flow year's sovereign reaches the Chens (辰) palace, this person will fall ill and encounter mourning events, or his wife and children will become ill. In summary, one should check whether the two years (dazheng and xiaozheng) and the sovereign (tai sui) form punishment and harm with the person's luck and destiny. Only when punishment and harm are formed will misfortune occur. If the tai sui and the dazheng and xiaozheng's heavenly stems and earthly branches harmonize with the person's luck and destiny, it is considered a fortunate omen.

Whenever the current year's heavenly stem and the major and minor cycles come across "Guchen," there will certainly be matters involving mourning for parents; when they come across "Guasu," there will certainly be disasters involving bloodshed and injury. The above is from the "Jin Shu Ming Jue." If the current year's heavenly stem conflicts with the major cycle, it indicates financial loss; if the current year's heavenly stem is above the major cycle, it indicates instability in one's authority and restlessness. This statement is from the "Zhu Shen Jing."

Luolu Zi says: "When the ruler is at the position of the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit, there will be harm in front." Ying和尚 explains that the second position ahead of one's birth year is the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit. If the current year's heavenly stem and earthly branch, along with variousInauspicious Sha and the major and minor years, all press upon this position, one should worry about sudden misfortunes and also be cautious of mourning for distant relatives. For example, someone born in Xinhai, the second position ahead is Chou, which is his Mourning-and-Condolence spirit. When encountering Jichou year, misfortune will be right in front, immediately visible.

Luolu Zi said: "The dwelling and tomb are struck by凶杀, dust falls from the beams, and lamentations and mourning come to the door, transforming the palace and commercial tones into薤露." Ying和尚 explained that in ancient times, good singers could shake dust from the beams and their lingering melodies would remain in the hall, singing harmonious and refined music in accordance with the palace and commercial tones. Now, however, such songs have turned into lamentations and sighs, becoming funeral dirges like薤露, indicating that the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit and the guest of mourning have arrived at the door, and the spirits of the dwelling and tomb have been wounded byInauspicious Sha. The fifth position before one's destiny is called "dwelling," and the fifth position after is called "tomb." The second position before is called "Mourning-and-Condolence spirit," and the second position after is called "guest of mourning." If the current year's sovereign carriesInauspicious Sha and together presses upon the major and minor years, and they conflict or clash, calamity is certain, and one must necessarily take measures to avoid it in advance.

Luolu Zi also says: "When the dwelling and the tomb are in the same position, there is likely little joy and much sorrow." Wang's commentary explains that the original destiny's fifth position ahead is a yang dwelling, and the fifth position behind is a yin tomb. How could these two fall into the same position? For example, someone born in the Guihai year, the fifth position ahead meets Wuchen, and Chen is exactly the storage of water. Thus, the dwelling and the tomb coincide in one position. If the stream year and great destiny bring inInauspicious Sha (evil killers), it is said "dwelling and tomb are in the same place," which suggests that one's life will have little joy and much sorrow.

Luolu Zi also says: "Disaster arises from Goujiao, and misfortune comes from Yuanchen." Wang's commentary explains that when the flow year meets Goujiao in the big year, one is likely to suffer calamity due to reckless and violent actions. Yuanchen refers to Yuanchen, and when it occurs, most endeavors end in loss and failure. All of this is from Luolu Zi.

Therefore, whether a person lives a long life or a short one depends entirely on whether they encounter life qi; misfortune and fortune, as well as prosperity and adversity, also depend on the limits of the great destiny years and the flow years. If the five phases are in mutual generation and harmony, it is auspicious; if they are in conflict and mutual control, it is inauspicious. Whenever the flow year and the major and minor destiny years reach a position that is in mutual generation or harmonious with the original destiny, it is auspicious; if they reach a position that is in mutual control and cannot be harmonious, it is inauspicious. If the five phases of the flow year and the major and minor destiny years generate my original destiny, the auspiciousness is deep; if my original destiny generates the five phases of the flow year and the major and minor destiny years, the auspiciousness is shallow. If the five phases of the flow year and the major and minor destiny years control my original destiny, the danger is great; if my original destiny controls the five phases of the flow year and the major and minor destiny years, the danger is less. In addition, one should remember: when encountering a fortunate destiny, take the triple harmony position of that destiny as the auspicious month in the year; when encountering an unfortunate destiny, take the four opposing position of that destiny as the dangerous month in the year.

The Hu Zhong Zi says: "If a broken house is encountered, there must be renovation; if a meeting spirit is met, there will be no marriage." "Broken house" is usually located at the fifth position before one's birth year, while "meeting spirit" is usually found at the fourth position before and after one's birth year. If the current year and the two destinies meet the broken house, there will certainly be renovation or construction of a house within the family. If during this time the mourning-and-condolence spirit and the guest spirit also appear, there will be misfortune. If the current year and the two destinies meet the meeting spirit, there will certainly be joy from marriage and feasting. However, if they overlap, it may indicate illness. The meeting spirit refers to the position of triple harmony.

The text also says: The worst in terms of breaking the law is "Goujiao," which causes all affairs to fail. The most calamitous is "Bathing," which easily brings about changes in both official and private matters. If the flow year and the two destinies meet Goujiao, the things one attempts will not succeed. If the position of Bathing is also associated with water, it becomes "Bathing Kill," and if the flow year and the two destinies meet it, men will face troubles with the master, private documents, and entanglements. Women will suffer financial loss, property damage, and miscarriage. The text continues: "When combined with reverse repetition, it divides into three feet and allows for ease; when conflicting with punishment and harm, it determines a year of hardship and obstacles."

When the major and minor cycles, along with one's birth year and the current year, mutually conflict and overlap, it indicates death. The term "returning to the opposite" refers to a direct opposition, which although may bring illness in the current year, does not necessarily shorten life. "Punishment and harm" refers to situations where punishment and harm occur without overlapping. The original text also states: "Even if the year is marked by illness, one still needs to worry about illness; if the year reaches the position of illness in the twelve cycles, one still needs to worry about illness this year; if it reaches the position of birth, there will still be matters related to childbirth this year. Although it is an ill year, as long as the characters Chen and Xu are not seen, it is not a problem. If Chen and Xu are seen, it is particularly inauspicious, because Chen is Tianluo and Xu is Diwang, so they should be avoided from the beginning. When it is a year of childbirth, as long as the characters for the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit and the Guest spirit are not seen, it is not a problem. If they are seen, it is inauspicious, because the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit and the Guest spirit are transformed from the Yellow Banner and the Leopard Tail, so they should be avoided as much as possible. All of this is from the book "Hu Zhongzi."

On the Grand Duke of the Year

The "Tai Su" is the essence of the planet Jupiter, manifesting as a spiritual force that occupies a particular direction each year. It is the sovereign among numerousInauspicious Sha (malevolent spirits). Therefore, all theInauspicious Sha (malevolent spirits) must determine their positions based on where the Tai Su is located. The palace where the Tai Su resides should ideally be in harmony with the person's own heavenly stem and earthly branch, as well as their Nayin sound element, without any conflict, harm, or mutual control. Additionally, if the person's "Nobleman" (贵人), "Wealth and Favor" (禄马), and all other auspicious deities are also located there, then this year will bring good fortune such as promotion, wealth, fame, official appointments, marriage and children, and meeting important people who bring benefits. Conversely, if the Tai Su is located in a position that conflicts or mutually controls the person's heavenly stem and earthly branch and Nayin sound element, and if it is in a place where the heaven, earth, and human trinity are all in a state of death or decline, and if it is a place where variousInauspicious Sha (malevolent spirits) gather, then this year will bring illness, legal troubles, financial loss, misfortune, death, and frequent misfortunes. It will also lead to being blamed by superiors. The specific interpretation must also be combined with the influence of the big destiny cycle (大运) for a more accurate analysis.

If the Five Phases of the current year's heavenly stem and earthly branch generate the Five Phases of the native's birth year, it is favorable to meet the Nobleman and associate with those in higher positions. If the Five Phases of the current year's heavenly stem and earthly branch control the Five Phases of the native's birth year, one should be cautious of anger and punishment from superiors. If the Five Phases of the current year's heavenly stem and earthly branch are in a conflicting relationship with the Five Phases of the native's birth year, there may be legal disputes. If the Nayin sound element of the native's birth year generates the Five Phases of the current year's heavenly stem and earthly branch, there will be financial loss, hard work, and many things will not be accomplished. If the Five Phases of the current year's heavenly stem and earthly branch generate the Five Phases of the native's birth year, things tend to go smoothly. If the Five Phases of the current year's heavenly stem and earthly branch are above the Five Phases of the native's birth year, all actions will be delayed and obstructed, causing much discomfort.

When the Tai Sui (Celestial Stem) enters the "residence" position, it indicates instability in the family home; the "residence" refers to the fifth position ahead of one's birth stem. When the Tai Sui arrives in the year of "Da Hao" (Great Expenditure), it often leads to the sale of land and property. When the Tai Sui reaches the year of "Kong Wang" (Void), it signifies loss of belongings and financial loss. When the Tai Sui encounters the year of "Xian Chi" (Xianchi), it often brings troubles from immorality and legal issues. When the Tai Sui reaches the year that conflicts and breaks the birth stem, there are usually incidents of fear and sudden conflicts. When the Tai Sui is directly above the "Yuan Chen" (Primordial Star), it indicates relocation or disputes with spouses, concubines, or close relatives; Yuan Chen is located at the first position ahead of the birth stem. For those with scholarly destinies, encountering "Xue Tang Gu Ren" (Academy Nobleman) along with the metal, water, and wood food gods and the Post-horse (Yi Ma) combining with the birth stem, if the Tai Sui arrives in a year that is favorable for the individual's birth stem, scholars may pass the examination together, officials may be promoted and gain higher ranks, and they may have the opportunity to meet the emperor, which is an auspicious time for promotion and increased fortune.

All military officials' destinies, when encountering "reverse eating," "ghost of official salary," punishment and clash, "official symbol," combination with official salary, and when劫杀 is met with birth and punishment and harm is in strength, will surely achieve merit and fame in border posts. The above is from the "Zhu Shen Jing." The "Jin Shu Ming Jue" has a verse saying: When the year ruler arrives at the official star and also arrives at the official seal, it will surely result in promotion and official seal; to know when salary increases and examination success occurs, one should examine the situation where the heavenly stem combines with the noble god. The "Guang Lu" says: Whenever the year ruler reversely controls the noble god, it is suitable to seek official position and salary; if the noble god above the heavenly stem in the destiny controls the year ruler, it indicates that carriages, hats, and crowns will arrive, and wealth and honor will come naturally.

The Luolu Zi says: "Even if the year is afflicted by both hidden chant and return chant, it does not necessarily bring disaster, and if the year is prosperous, it is appropriate to gain blessings." Wang's commentary explains that even if both hidden chant and return chant fall upon the current year, it does not become a calamity, and if the current year and great destiny are in a prosperous and flourishing state of the five phases, and there is a rich combination, it is natural to gain blessings. For example, someone born in the Guihai year encountering the Yisi year, although water is in the dead position in the Si place, water overcomes fire, and fire is the wealth for Gui water. Moreover, fire is in its flourishing state in the Si place, and there is also the post-horse. Although Si and Hai are in opposition, forming return chant, since both the body and wealth are flourishing, it does not become a disaster. This can truly be said to be a bountiful year, and it is appropriate to gain abundant blessings. Ying和尚 explains that "covering" refers to hidden chant, and "clashing" refers to return chant. If both are in harmony with the original destiny, it is auspicious; if they are in conflict, it is inauspicious.

On the Hidden Numbers

The term "hui" refers to disorder and darkness. When the heavens display the phenomenon of hui, the positions of the stars change, and the sun and moon lose their regular courses. When the earth displays the phenomenon of hui, the rivers and streams surge and overflow, mountains suddenly collapse, high riverbanks become deep valleys, and deep gullies become hills. These words are taken from the "Small Odes · October" in the Book of Songs. If the daylight displays the phenomenon of hui, the sun is surrounded by multiple bright halos, dust rises, mist fills the air, and it is cloudy without rain. If the night displays the phenomenon of hui, the moon sinks and the moon's essence becomes distorted. If human affairs display the phenomenon of hui, the relationships between sovereign and minister, father and son, and husband and wife become disordered, and the five fundamental virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and faith are all violated, leading to ministers killing their sovereigns and sons killing their fathers. All these belong to the way of disorder and confusion.

The "Tai Sui" symbolizes the human sovereign, who commands all the deities, regulates the directions, coordinates the four seasons, and oversees the achievements of the year. As for a person's year pillar, month pillar, day pillar, and hour pillar, they are all subjects and must not offend the sovereign. If the heavenly stem of the day pillar or hour pillar at birth matches the heavenly stem of the current Tai Sui, it is called "Hui Qi," which certainly brings hidden misfortune. The time when the misfortune occurs is during the month corresponding to the branch that was offended; severe cases may result in death, while lighter cases will bring some disturbance.

If the heavenly stem of the birth day or birth hour combines with the heavenly stem of the current year's sovereign, it is called "hui qi ru men" (晦气入门). If this stem is in its flourishing phase, the misfortune will affect the family and relatives. If the stem is both conflicting and combining but falls in a dead or exhausted position, it indicates misfortune for oneself. If it falls in a position of mutual punishment and the energy is stagnant, it also indicates misfortune for oneself and brings troubles. If it falls in a position of the six harms, it indicates misfortune for the women and children in the family, or problems such as servants running away or falling ill. If it falls in the position of the day or hour's ancestral grave, where the ancestral position is the fifth position ahead of the day pillar and the grave position is the fifth position behind the hour pillar, it indicates many dangers for the family and disturbances caused by female relatives. If there is a pregnant woman in the family, there will certainly be signs of unease after childbirth. Giving birth to a girl is still favorable, but giving birth to a boy is unfavorable. If a boy is born, both the mother and child are likely to lose one. These are all judged in the same way as the big destiny cycle.

If the "Obscured Qi Enters the Door" appears, there will be a woman in the household encountering misfortune, but those who are already pregnant may be exempt from calamity. Another interpretation is that it indicates a woman in the household is pregnant; giving birth to a daughter can alleviate misfortune, while giving birth to a son means either the mother or the child will suffer. If this harmonious combination occurs among the Six Spirits in the Earthly Branches, it is called "Mandarin Duck Harmony," indicating good fortune. If the combination is beneficial, it signifies the household will gain new members. If the two elements dislike each other, there will be parting or separation. If the current year's Sovereign overcomes the birth hour's pillar, it indicates personal misfortune. All of this is from the "Shen Bai Jing."

Ancient poetry says: one must not have the day stem or hour stem of one's birth matching the heavenly stem of the current year's heavenly sovereign. Once they match, calamity is certain. If it is near, the disaster will affect within the family, harming women and children. If it is far, it will affect people and wealth, causing decline and ruin. If a woman in the family is pregnant, she may be spared from disaster. Giving birth to a daughter is a blessing, but giving birth to a son brings more calamity and family unrest. When people encounter such a year, they should not expect any good fortune, but instead sit quietly, restrain their thoughts, and remain calm.

Whenever the current year's heavenly stem and earthly branch (流年太岁) suffer from punishment and clash (刑), clash (冲), pressure (压), or harm (害) affecting the birth year's pillar (年柱), it indicates disaster for the parents. If these factors affect the month pillar (月柱), it indicates disaster for brothers and colleagues. If they affect the day pillar (日柱), it indicates disaster for the wife or oneself. If they affect the hour pillar (时柱), it indicates disaster for children, but if the Five Phases (五行) do not clash, it may instead indicate the ability to have children. If these factors affect the "womb pillar" (胎元), it indicates disaster for parents and elders. If they affect the "destiny palace" (命宫), and there is a clash or mutual control (交战相克), it indicates legal disputes, mourning clothes, financial loss, and lack of peace for oneself and the parents. All of the above refer to disasters and blessings within one year, and their fulfillment occurs during the "chariot path" (辇路) of the heavenly stem and earthly branch. The chariot path refers to the twelve months: the four beginning months (四孟), the four middle months (四仲), and the four end months (四季). All of the above are from the "Broad Trust Collection" (广信集).

The term "劫杀临命" refers to a situation where the year's劫杀 (plundering and killing) is directly positioned on one's birth year branch. If this occurs, it indicates that during that year, various affairs will be lost, scattered, and ruined. If a person is away from home, they may also encounter robbery and plunder. For example, someone born in the year of亥 (Hai) will face劫杀 when the year is寅 (Yin), 午 (Wu), or 戌 (Xu), as the fire trine's劫杀 falls on亥, thus directly affecting their birth branch. In such years, one should be cautious and quiet, maintaining a steady lifestyle, and avoid traveling far from home to prevent encountering robbery. Whether male or female, the second position ahead of one's birth branch is called "丧门" (the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit), and the second position behind is called "吊客" (the Guest of Mourning). If someone encounters The Mourning-and-Condolence spirit and 吊客 positioned on their birth branch, it indicates that there will be matters related to mourning and crying during that year. For instance, someone born in the year of子 (Zi) has 寅 (Yin) as The Mourning-and-Condolence spirit and 戌 (Xu) as 吊客. If the year's 太岁 (sovereign star) is in 寅 or 戌, or if the person's small age cycle (小运) reaches these positions, it also indicates that there will be matters of mourning during that year.

Great fortune is like a general, small fortune is like a minor general, and the current year's heavenly stem is like the sovereign. When these three elements work together harmoniously, things can be accomplished. If these three elements meet the positions of luck, post-horse, and nobleman, it is auspicious; if they meet punishments and凶杀, it is inauspicious. If these divine omens are already present in the person's birth chart, the effects of good or bad fortune will be significant; if they are not present, the effects will be minor. A person who has been long in hardship may not necessarily become prosperous when encountering a favorable period, and a person who has been long prosperous may not necessarily face hardship when encountering an unfavorable period. One must also consider the overall strength and decline of the birth chart, carefully analyzing the changes. For those with weak Five Phases, the fortune should be in a strong position; for those with strong Five Phases, the fortune should be in a weak position. In conclusion, one must combine the year, month, and day charts to examine them thoroughly to avoid mistakes. This statement is from the book "Li Xuzhong's Book."

When examining a person's destiny, treat the current year's heavenly stem and the small age period as forces that I can utilize. Although the major age period has reached a favorable position, the good fortune has not yet manifested; it is only when the current year's heavenly stem and the small age period also reach favorable positions to correspond with it that the year will bring promotion and advancement. Similarly, although the major age period has reached a dangerous position, misfortunes have not yet occurred; it is only when the current year's heavenly stem and the small age period also reach dangerous positions to correspond with it that the year will bring mourning, crying, and punishment.

Chen Fang said: When the great destiny, the small destiny, and the current year's sovereign all fall in auspicious positions, it is called "Fu Hui" (auspicious meeting); when they all fall in inauspicious positions, it is called "Xiong Hui" (adverse meeting). Generally speaking, if the great destiny is in an inauspicious position, but the small destiny and the current year's sovereign are in auspicious positions, it cannot bring great fortune, only slight ease in that year; conversely, if the great destiny is in an auspicious position, but the small destiny and the current year's sovereign are in inauspicious positions, it cannot bring great misfortune, only slight hardship in that year. The magnitude of fortune or misfortune is determined mainly by the great destiny. To know the years when a person receives fortune, one must have the great destiny in positions such as officialdom, growth, establishment of a warehouse, post-horse, horse compatibility, officialdom compatibility, and destiny compatibility; if one wishes to further determine the months, days, and hours of fortune, one can follow the same method as above for calculation. To know the years when a person suffers misfortune, one must have the great destiny in positions such as the death, failure, and extinction of the self, or in positions such as hidden chant, reverse chant, kongwang, and凶杀 (evil killing), and the current year's sovereign also falls into these seven categories, along with the ghost that harms the self, then that year will certainly bring great misfortune; if one wishes to further determine the months, days, and hours of misfortune, one can follow the same method as above for calculation.

Ancient people believed that when the annual stem and the small year cycle overlap on top of the big year cycle, it brings disaster, which is incorrect. If the big year cycle is already in a favorable position, and the annual stem or small year cycle overlaps with it, that year would instead indicate double good fortune. The most to be avoided is when the annual stem or small year cycle joins the big year cycle in an unfavorable position, which would indicate unexpected misfortune, or even a sign of death. All of the above is from the "Three Essentials of Destiny."

Anyone who wants to inquire about when they can obtain an official position must have their current year and major destiny cycle reaching the prosperous place of the heavenly stem associated with their official position, which is considered auspicious. Within a single year, to determine the exact month when this will come true, the same method is applied. For example, a person born in the Jiazi year takes Jia as their official position stem. The heavenly stem Jia belongs to... the original text here breaks off.
