Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

When one's destiny moves to a place where their heavenly stem and earthly branch are prosperous and strong, but the stem and branch are in a state of death or decline, this is called the "Busu Limit." If the heavenly stem of the year and the small destiny can still support, then even if one enters a period of disaster, there will be five years of good fortune within these ten years, and it will not be extremely bad. Therefore, it is called the "Busu Limit," meaning wearing coarse cloth and simple clothes, living in hardship without great calamity. This limit often has the first five years good and the last five years bad, or the first five years bad and the last five years good.

Out of its proper position

The person's official star, life star, and body star all meet ghostly evils at once, and both the great and small years also encounter the three punishments along with mutual conflict. Moreover, the main and fundamental elements in the four pillars fail to connect with the current year's sky stem and earth branch — such a person will become one who departs the world without a place to return.

The Fragmentation Limit

In this period, it does not indicate death, but rather loss and expenditure of wealth: the luck is exactly at the Bathing position, and it coincides with real ghostly and malevolent influences, for example, when Jia wood is already weak, yet in the destiny there is a Geng metal torestrain it.

The position of calamity limit

When the great destiny period reaches the Hidden Chant, and also encounters the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit, the visitor, the white-robed person, the flying wind, Guchen and Guasu, as well as the punishment of the sovereign year, it certainly indicates calamity. Whenever this period is reached, it is unfavorable to relatives and there will be mourning and mourning clothes in the family. The above is mentioned in The Ghost Valley Legacy.

Whenever a person's big destiny cycle (dasyun) arrives at a position where the heavenly stem of the current year shares the same position as the stem of the heavenly ruler (tai sui) or the birth horse (sheng ma), or arrives at the place of the stem's growth, growth, officialdom, prosperity, storage, or the post-horse, the noble spirits, and the noble dwelling, these ten positions are all favorable and prosperous. If the cycle also carries the proper official (zheng guan) and the proper seal (zheng yin), it becomes even more auspicious. If the cycle falls on the position of kongwang (void), the fortune is reduced, except when the position of the horse and the birth horse are the same, which does not reduce the fortune. If a position carries two or more evil spirits, there will be misfortune, and the misfortune that harms the person is the most severe. When the cycle arrives at a position that is in harmony with the stem of the destiny, in harmony with the heavenly ruler, and in harmony with the six harmonies, and also carries the heavenly stem of the six spirits, it is also a favorable cycle. A yang cycle arriving at the position of capping or a yin cycle arriving at the position of decline is considered to be heading towards prosperity. Arriving at a position where the stem and the horse are the same is certainly a blessing, but there are differences in the degree of blessing. For example, in the fire trinity (yin-wu-xu), a person born on a geng day has his stem and horse in shen. Although the birth year of a person born in gengyin (geng year) is in conflict with the stem and horse, when the cycle arrives at shen, it becomes very prosperous. However, if the birth month, day, and hour also fall on the branches of yin and shen, it forms a repeated conflict, leading to major misfortune. If the birth month, day, and hour all fall on shen, then the stem and horse will harm the birth destiny, and arriving at that position will also bring misfortune. Another example is in the water trinity (shen-zi-chen), a person born on a jia day has his stem and horse in yin. Although the birth year of a person born in jia shen (jia year) is in conflict with the stem and horse, when the cycle arrives at yin, there will be minor misfortune. However, if the birth month and hour also fall on the branches of yin and shen, forming a repeated conflict, arriving at that position will lead to major misfortune, and the conflict is more severe than the clash.

When one's fortune reaches the禄库, it indicates a blessing of breaking conventions and being promoted beyond one's rank. If the root of one's fortune should lead to prestige but has not yet manifested, then when one's middle age fortune reaches the禄库, sudden success will occur, and the prosperity will last for ten years. However, once one enters the previous or next step of the fortune, it will lead to death, because the禄 dies before the库 and the绝 occurs after the库. If someone who is already prominent encounters the库 in their later years, they may either be appointed again as an important minister or have just attained a high position, but after half of this fortune period, the库 becomes the墓, and they are likely to die within the库. For people in their middle years, passing through the前后 of the禄库 in their yin and yang fortunes can only be considered as calamities and obstacles; if the yin禄 first reaches the绝, but at the same time encounters theThe Post-horse andNobleman together, it is actually a good fortune. If one encounters the库 in their youth, it signifies success in the imperial examinations and promotion in official rank; encountering the库 in theKongwang also indicates success in the examinations and promotion, but if the official rank has already been fully attained and this occurs in old age, death is certain, even if one lives long enough, there will certainly be a major disaster.

I once consulted the Taoist priest Kang Zixiang about the method of determining one's destiny, and Zixiang cited the "Bao Yuan Yu Tong Jing" saying that when one's great destiny cycle reaches the position ofLiu He with one's birth month, birth day, and birth hour, it indicates rapid promotion and sudden rise to a prominent position. Although I have never seen that book, verifying it with the destiny of a nobleman's fate, it indeed proved true. When one's destiny cycle reaches the position of the noble god, ancients considered it auspicious. For example, those with the heavenly stems Jia, Wu, and Geng, when their destiny cycle reaches Chou and Wei, and those with the stems Yi and Si, when their destiny cycle reaches Zi and Shen, are considered to be in an auspicious cycle. However, it cannot be universally considered as beneficial; one must also examine the influence of malevolent stars and Kongwang to determine its fortune or misfortune. As for those with the stems Bing and Ding, when their destiny cycle reaches You and Hai, and those with the stems Ren and Gui, when their destiny cycle reaches Mao and Si, these are cases where one first gains fortune but later incurs misfortune.

I have examined the fate of those with the influence of Bing and Ding, the fire stems: those whose fortune reaches You and Hai in their youth will certainly suffer from mourning or punishment; among those who die in their old age when their fortune reaches You and Hai, six or seven out of ten will experience such calamities. This is because Bing and Ding fire are dead in You and绝 in Hai. For those born on Ding day who reach Hai, since Ding combines secretly with Ren, the disaster will be somewhat lighter. Similarly, those with the influence of Ren and Gui, the water stems: those whose fortune reaches Mao and Si in their youth will certainly suffer from mourning or punishment; among those who die in their old age when their fortune reaches Mao and Si, six or seven out of ten will experience such calamities. This is because Ren and Gui water are dead in Mao and绝 in Si. For those born on Gui day who reach Si, since Wu and Gui combine secretly, the disaster will also be somewhat lighter.

Whenever a person's great destiny reaches the place where the Lu Spirit is in death, decline, illness, or ruin, it is a very凶ous period. If it reaches reverse chant, hidden chant, kongwang, three punishments, six harms, or a gathering of凶ous stars, or if the Lu Spirit meets a ghost, it is also a凶ous period. Original note: When the current year's ruler moves into these positions, it indicates that year will be凶ous. If during a period of decline and decline one encounters the post-horse or meets the horse, it starts with good fortune but ends in disaster. If during a period of death or ruin, and with the presence of the official star, the official seal, or the heavenly master, it also starts with good fortune but ends in disaster. I have always observed the destiny of the nobleman: those who die during periods of death, decline, illness, or ruin account for six or seven out of ten; those who die during periods of reverse chant, hidden chant, kongwang, or punishment and harm account for five or six out of ten; and those who die during periods with three or two凶ous stars gathering account for three or four out of ten.

The above discusses the situation where the official position (禄) falls in a place of no vitality. If the destiny moves to a hidden chant (伏吟) or reverse chant (反吟), it indicates calamity involving mourning and crying. Ancients said: "Hidden chant and reverse chant bring continuous sorrow and weeping." If this is combined with the great destiny and small destiny conflicting, or if the heavenly stem (太岁) suppresses the great destiny, or if the heavenly stem and small destiny both move to a harmful position, then that year will be the year of disaster. A great disaster may result in the death of parents, while a minor disaster may bring the crying of women and children. If the hidden chant or reverse chant destiny coincides with the position of禄马, built official position (建禄), or the birth place (生地), repository (库地), and prosperous and strong (旺相) positions, it is actually beneficial to the official position, but there may be minor domestic troubles. If in old age, the fortune has declined and the official position has faded, and one again encounters such a destiny, which is also a harmful position for the official position, then death is certain. The above is also found in "Three Essentials of Destiny."

In general, even if one's fortune runs encounter conflicts and overlaps, as long as it does not violate the Tai Sui, Guan Fu, Po Jun, Qi Sha, the three prohibitions of the year, the original birth Yuanchen, Tianluo and Diwang, as well as the three hills and five tombs—men take Wei and Shen for the three hills, and Chou and Yin for the five tombs; women take Chou and Yin for the three hills, and Wei and Shen for the five tombs; while the "Eight Characters Golden Book" takes Chou as the three hills and Wei as the five tombs—along with other harmful stars and punishments, it will not cause harm. Generally, noble gentlemen who have status may not rise without suffering punishments, but if they meet auspicious stars, even conflicts can turn into blessings. Conversely, if the major and minor fortune periods overlap and conflict, and also violate various punishments, emptiness, death and decline, then they will certainly face worries and difficulties. This statement comes from the "Three Fate Compilation."

Those whose destiny lacks metal in their fundamental constitution need to rely on metal and earth in their fortune to become prosperous; those lacking water need to rely on water and metal to become prosperous. Conversely, if the foundation already has excessive metal, further travel in metal and earth fortune will certainly cause stagnation; if wood is already excessive, further travel in water and wood fortune will also cause stagnation. For example, in the case of someone born in the year of Bingshen, month of Bingshen, day of Yi, and hour of Renwu, the destiny has excessive fire energy. Traveling through the years of Yin, Si, and Wu will certainly bring misfortune and obstacles, but when reaching a place where fire has no support, it becomes a good omen. The rest follows the same principle. This statement comes from the book "Tianyuan Biannian Shu." Ancient texts also say: when examining great fortune, if the four pillars originally lack metal, encountering metal in the fortune will bring prosperity; if originally lacking water, encountering water in the fortune will bring prosperity; if the original constitution is already excessive and the fortune enters another excessive place, water will flood, wood will be blocked, metal will break, fire will become dry, and earth will become hard and unyielding.

The term "entering the 'Heavenly Net and Earthly Trap'" usually refers to the branches Wu and Hai as the Heavenly Net, and Chen and Si as the Earthly Trap. When a man's personal year reaches the Heavenly Net, he may encounter official documents, lawsuits, or legal troubles. When a woman's personal year reaches the Earthly Trap, she may face disputes and serious, lingering illnesses. For example, if a man reaches Bingxu at age twenty-one and Dinghai at twenty-two, this is called entering the Heavenly Net. If a woman reaches Yisi at age twenty-eight and Jiachen at twenty-nine, this is called entering the Earthly Trap. Other cases follow the same pattern.

The concept of entering "Great Loss" and "Minor Loss" refers to taking the fifth position before the Tai Su as Great Loss and the sixth as Minor Loss. Most books agree that the fifth position before the Tai Su is Great Loss and the sixth is Minor Loss. Only the "San Ming Zhi Zhang" shares this view, indicating that all affairs will suffer loss and achieve nothing. If the current year also encounters these, the outcome is the same. For example, a person born in the Year of the Rat has the Snake as Great Loss and the Horse as Minor Loss. If one's destiny enters the Snake or Horse branches, it means entering Great or Minor Loss, leading to the dispersal of all affairs.

The phrase "ten out of ten fail" refers to the situation where the heavenly stem of one's birth year is harmed or restrained by the big destiny cycle. For example, those born under Jia or Yi should avoid Geng or Xin, and those born under Geng or Xin should avoid Bing or Ding. If this is combined with a weak destiny and the wealth star also lacks strength, then out of ten cases, none will succeed. For instance, a person born in Dinghai year should avoid Ren and Gui. If they encounter a Ding year or a Ren year, and the first lunar month's month builder is Renyin, the second lunar month's month builder is Guimao; for a male's destiny, which moves in reverse, they will fail at Guimao. This is because their destiny is fire, and fire is in decline at Mao; their destiny is water and their body is earth, and both water and earth are in decline at Mao. Moreover, for a person born on a Ding day, metal is their destiny and wealth, and metal is only in its initial stage at Mao, with very little strength, unable to provide support. For a person born in Hai year, fire is their destiny and wealth, and fire is also in decline at Mao. Therefore, this is a major calamity. This is also mentioned in the book "San Ming Qian."

Whenever the course of fortune reaches the Yangren, it indicates that wealth comes and goes suddenly. This statement is from the "寸珠尺璧." Every major step of destiny is further divided into the first five years and the next five years: if the first step is favorable but the next is unfavorable, then the fortune in the next five years will be shallow; if the first step is unfavorable but the next is favorable, then the misfortune in the next five years will be less severe. If an unfavorable period follows another unfavorable period, or a favorable period follows another favorable period, then both good and bad fortune will be intensified.

Discussing the Minor Years

The "small years" refer to the numbers of yin and yang generation. Yang energy begins at Zi and reaches fullness at Yin, where three yang energies are complete, so male children start their small years from Bingyin. Yin energy begins at Wu and reaches fullness at Shen, where three yin energies are complete, so female children start their small years from Renshen in reverse order. Fire is the ultimate yang energy, and wood is the lesser yang energy. Bing belongs to fire, Yin belongs to wood, and fire is born in Yin, so Bingyin is purely yang, and male small years all start from Bingyin. Water is the ultimate yin energy, and metal is the lesser yin energy. Ren belongs to water, Shen belongs to metal, and water is born in Shen, so Renshen is purely yin, and female small years all start from Renshen. This explanation comes from the "Yan Dongshou Book."

The *Zhu Shen Jing* says: Small years are also called "running years." Males begin with Bingyin at age one, while females begin with Renshen at age one. Males proceed in the forward direction, while females proceed in the reverse direction, and each year they change according to the heavenly stem. The *San Ming Ti Yao* says: Small years move one position each year. Males start with Bingyin at age one and proceed forward in sequence, completing sixty cycles by age sixty, then starting again from Bingyin at age sixty-one. Females start with Renshen at age one and proceed backward in sequence, completing sixty cycles by age sixty, then starting again from Renshen at age sixty-one.

The operation of the small years is based on the heavens rotating to the left and the earth rotating to the right: yang starts from寅 and阴 starts from申, so male children begin at寅 at the age of one, while female children begin at申 at the age of one. It should be judged according to the Five Phases of the month builder, considering its strength and weakness, and combined with the sovereign year and the great year to determine fortune and misfortune. The small years each follow the Five Phases of the month builder derived from the heavenly stem of the birth year, distinguishing between generation and overcoming, victory and defeat. For example, in the year of Jiazi, male children start with Bingyin and female children start with Renshen, which is of this kind. The small years support the great years and the sovereign year; the three interact with each other in terms of victory and defeat, thus determining fortune and misfortune.

The mnemonic says: reverse chant, conflict, three punishments, and Guchen are all extremely bad; however, for those with the birth years of Yin and Shen, their small years do not exclusively fall into the positions of reverse chant, conflict, and punishment. The commentary explains: although these are all bad years, there may be a turning point towards good fortune; for those with the birth years of Yin and Shen encountering reverse chant or hidden chant, one should not simply judge their small years as being directly under the year of the sovereign. This is also mentioned in The Ghost Valley Legacy.

Volume Thirty-Four

On the Two Periods

The great destiny and the small destiny together are called "two destinies." When the two destinies reach the "Nobleman" position, which is the position of Tianyi Nobleman, it indicates that during the year there will be few disasters and diseases, no obstacles, and someone will recommend and support the person. Officials will be promoted and receive higher positions. Those with many Noblemen in their fate may even have the opportunity to meet the king and participate in rewards and honors. Common people will have children, gain wealth, and women will have good news related to their husbands and children. Monks and Taoists will find it favorable to visit powerful officials. When the two destinies reach the "Lucky Position," officials will be promoted and receive higher ranks and increased salaries, while common people will gain wealth. When the two destinies reach the "Post-horse" position, officials will be sent on duty outside their posts and will be required to travel around the country. Common people will gain wealth through business outside their home area. Women will give birth to sons, and their husbands will have good fortune. Monks and Taoists will find long journeys favorable. When the two destinies reach the "Huagai" or "Jiaogui" positions, civil officials will be promoted to important and prestigious positions, while military officials may be relieved of their duties. Common people will lose wealth and lose control over affairs, but they will not suffer great calamities. Monks and Taoists will find it favorable to take monastic vows and receive ordination. When the two destinies reach the "Zhenyin" position, officials will achieve great fame and success, common people will accumulate wealth and gain power, but women will suffer from worries about their relatives and family members. Monks and Taoists may receive a purple robe and袈裟 or be appointed as abbots. When the two destinies reach the "Jinyu" position, regardless of whether one is high or low in status, it indicates joy from marriage celebrations and family reunions. Women will have good fortune in all matters. Monks and Taoists will receive secret assistance from female Noblemen.

When the second cycle of years coincides with "Hidden Chant," meaning that the year's heavenly stem and earthly branch are the same as the person's birth stem and branch, or when it coincides with "Return Chant," meaning that the year's heavenly stem and earthly branch conflict with the person's birth stem and branch, regardless of whether the person is high or low in status, it indicates illness, financial loss, leaving home, and crying. However, for monks and Taoists, this year is favorable as they may be ordained and become monks or Taoists. When the second cycle of years coincides with "Mourning-and-Condolence spirit" and "Guest spirit," these are spirits associated with funerals, indicating bad omens of death and mourning, and this applies to everyone regardless of status; however, for monks and Taoists, it is a good omen, as they may receive gifts of robes and gain authority over temples and monasteries. When the second cycle of years coincides with "劫杀" (sudden calamity), military officials will suffer unexpected events leading to a change in their position, while civil officials and clerks in government offices will encounter lawsuits and possibly be demoted; common people will suffer misfortunes, lose power, and lose money, women may have miscarriages, and monks and Taoists may offend their superiors due to official matters. When the second cycle of years coincides with "Guanfu," officials will have disputes with colleagues and be questioned and inspected by superiors; common people will be involved in lawsuits, women will have family discord, and monks and Taoists will face legal troubles, which is very inauspicious.

When the second cycle coincides with "Great Expenditure," officials will face criticism from their superiors and suffer from slander and injustice, unable to clear their names; common people will lose their families and businesses and suffer financial losses; women will worry about their husbands and weep for their children, and may also suffer from illness and fear, in severe cases even dying; monks and Taoists will return to secular life and lose their positions of authority. When the second cycle coincides with "Xianchi," which is commonly known as the "Flower Star," officials will have their corruption exposed or become involved in unclear cases; common people will indulge in alcohol and women will also do the same, causing damage to their blood and qi and suffering secretly; monks and Taoists will fall ill and return to secular life, indicating restlessness of the mind. When the second cycle coincides with "Kongwang," which refers to the two earthly branches in a ten-day period that have no heavenly stem to match, officials will lose their posts and be dismissed; common people will get into legal troubles, suffer financial losses, and feel depressed; women will worry about their husbands and children; monks and Taoists will have a peaceful and satisfying year. Whenever the current year's heavenly stem reaches the position of these harmful stars, the same method applies.

When the second cycle arrives at "wu li xing" (no courtesy punishment), which refers to the conflict between Zi and Mao branches, officials will be accused and sued by commoners and minor officials, receive reprimands from superiors, and be bullied by subordinates; it is not advisable to meet the sovereign. For common people, there will be disharmony between superiors and inferiors, and women and children will suffer many misfortunes. Women may have scandals involving immorality exposed. Monks and Taoists will quarrel over positions of authority. When the second cycle arrives at "wu en xing" (no mercy punishment), which refers to the conflict between Yin, Si, and Shen branches, officials will find it unfavorable to be recommended by others, and there will be deaths among subordinates and family women. Common people will suffer misfortunes in places where they have received favors, and the six relations will lose affection and loyalty. Women may have miscarriages. Monks and Taoists will have to mourn for their lay relatives. When the second cycle arrives at "shi shi xing" (relying on power punishment), which refers to the conflict between Chou, Xu, and Wei branches, officials will have conflicts with colleagues, common people will fight and create disputes, and women's households will be discordant. Monks and Taoists will experience ordinary circumstances. Whenever the cycle arrives at "gou jiao" (entanglement), it indicates involvement in matters from afar. When the cycle arrives at "er ba men" (two eight gates), it indicates wavering thoughts and indecision; the two eight gates refer to the Mao and You branches. When the cycle arrives at "yin yang er lu" (yin and yang two paths), which refers to the Zi and Wu branches, it indicates many difficulties and obstacles in all matters. When the cycle arrives at the lunar month corresponding to the month of conception, it indicates old matters from ancestors being revisited. All of the above are from the "Zhu Shen Jing."

The *San Ming Qian* says: When the movement reaches the "Second and Eighth Gates" which are the positions of卯 and 酉, officials will experience promotion and appointment, while minor officials will often face blame, and common people will find their lives unstable. When the movement enters the "Yin and Yang Two Paths" which are the positions of 子 and 午, there will be many instances of people fleeing from hardship and obstacles, and affairs will be blocked and unsmooth, indicating a situation that has not yet reached prosperity. I once heard this from a hermit: When examining a person's destiny, the day pillar and hour pillar are fundamental, the great years are auxiliary, and the small years are temporary useful gods. This is precisely saying that if the day of birth and the hour of birth meet two auspicious positions, one will be wealthy and noble; if they meet two inauspicious positions, one will be poor and humble. The ancients said, "The year is not as good as the month, the month is not as good as the day, the day is not as good as the hour." Those who are endowed with noble deities in their八字 still need the support of great years to truly achieve prominence. This statement comes from the *San Ming Ti Yao*.

When the big destiny and the small destiny combine to form a fortunate and auspicious situation, there are nine such cases. The first case is when the big destiny reaches the "Lù" (Wealthy Land) of a strong position, and the small destiny reaches the "Yì Mǎ" (Post-horse); for example, someone born in the year of Guichou, the "Lù" of the character Gui is in the Zi (Rat) position, so when the big destiny reaches Zi and the small destiny reaches the position of the Post-horse, which is Hai (Pig), this is the first case. The second case is when the big destiny reaches the Post-horse, and the small destiny reaches the "Jiàn Lù" (Established Wealthy Land); again, using the example of someone born in the year of Guichou, when the big destiny reaches Hai and the small destiny reaches Zi. The third case is when the big destiny reaches the Post-horse, and the small destiny reaches the branch that is in harmony with the Post-horse; for example, someone born in the year of Guichou, when the big destiny reaches Hai and the small destiny reaches Yin (Tiger), which is in harmony with Hai. The fourth case is the reverse of the third, when the big destiny reaches the branch that is in harmony with the Post-horse, and the small destiny reaches the Post-horse itself; for example, someone born in the year of Guichou, when the big destiny reaches Yin and the small destiny reaches Hai. The fifth case is when the big destiny reaches the "Lù Kù" (Wealthy Repository), and the small destiny reaches the branch that is in harmony with the Wealthy Repository; for example, someone born in the year of Guichou, when the big destiny reaches Chen (Dragon) and the small destiny reaches You (Rooster), which is in harmony with Chen.

The sixth type occurs when the great run reaches the long life position of the "wealth and fortune" or the long life position of the "destiny wealth," and the small run coincides with the matching branch. For example, a person born in Guichou, the long life position of wealth and fortune is寅, which combines with亥, and the long life position of destiny wealth is申, which combines with巳, all falling into this category. The seventh type occurs when the great run reaches the long life position of the official position, and the small run reaches the established official position. For example, a person born in Guisi, when the great run reaches申 and the small run reaches子. The eighth type occurs when the great run reaches the strong position of the day's main element, and the small run coincides with the branch of the birth year. For example, a person born in Guichou, when the great run reaches卯 and the small run reaches子, which coincides with丑. The ninth type occurs when both the great and small runs enter the prosperous and strong positions of the official position and the birth branch. For example, a person born in Guichou, when the great and small runs reach亥 and子. The above nine types all belong to the auspicious meeting of the great and small runs.

When the great destiny and the small destiny coincide to form a gathering of calamities, there are nine such situations. The first is when the great destiny reaches the position of honor and the original destiny's dead place, while the small destiny reaches the place of bathing and decline; for example, someone born in the year of Guichou, when the great destiny reaches Si and the small destiny reaches You. The second is when both the great and small destinies fall into places where the original destiny has no life energy; for someone born in the year of Guichou, Si is the dead place, You is the decline, Chou is the decline, Yin is the illness, Mao is the death, Chen is the tomb, all of which are places without vitality. The third is when the great and small destinies conflict with each other; for someone born in the year of Guichou, if the great destiny reaches Mao and the small destiny reaches You, or the great destiny reaches You and the small destiny reaches Mao, especially since Mao and You are originally dead and decline places. The fourth is when the great destiny directly falls on the original birth year's branch, and the small destiny then conflicts with it; for someone born in the year of Guichou, if the great destiny reaches Chou and the small destiny reaches Wei, which conflicts with Chou. The fifth is when the great destiny reaches the birth month's month builder, and the small destiny reaches the month of conception; for example, someone born in the year of Guichou in the third lunar month, if the great destiny reaches Chen and the small destiny reaches Wei, this is an indication of a gathering of calamities.

The sixth type is when both the major and minor cycles fall into the positions of 'Three Punishments', 'Six Harmful Relationships', and 'Yuanchen'; for example, someone born in the year Guichou has 'Six Harmful Relationships' and 'Yuanchen' both in Wu, and 'Three Punishments' in Wei. The seventh type is when both the major and minor cycles reach the positions of 'Zaisha' and 'Jiesha', twoInauspicious Spirit; for someone born in Guichou, 'Jiesha' is in Yin and 'Zaisha' is in Mao. The eighth type is when both the major and minor cycles fall into 'Kongwang'; since Guichou belongs to the Jiachen decade, which lacks Yin and Mao, Yin and Mao are its 'Kongwang'. The ninth type is when both the major and minor cycles reach the respective 'Zhenluo' and 'Diwang' of men and women; a man born in Xu encounters Hai, and a woman born in Hai encounters Xu, which is called 'Zhenluo'; a man born in Chen encounters Si, and a woman born in Si encounters Chen, which is called 'Diwang'. The above nine types all belong to the difficulties encountered by the major and minor cycles.

If both the earthly branches, heavenly stems, and their corresponding nayin sound elements, which are the five phases associated with each of the sixty jiazi, fall into the declining positions of death, burial, and extinction, and are further afflicted by evil spirits such as disaster spirits and calamity spirits, there may be a risk to life. However, if the heavenly stems, earthly branches, and their nayin sound elements in the major and minor years are harmonious or mutually generating without conflict, it would only result in a serious illness, not death. If only the heavenly stem is in a declining position, it indicates losing official position and salary, or being falsely accused and slandered, or losing the property left by parents. If only the earthly branch is in a declining position, it indicates illness and financial loss. If only the nayin sound element is in a declining position, it indicates physical weakness, injury to limbs, or illness, and those of low status may suffer punishment and penalty.

The variousInauspicious Spirit in one's destiny, if the big and small years happen to be directly on top of them, or if they are exactly in a declining, failed, or Kongwang position, will indicate that there will be incidents of losing position, salary, illness, or death in that year. Most dangerous are劫杀,墓杀, 三刑, 六害, 元辰, and the previously mentioned厄, when several of these combine together. If at the same time one enters a position where the heavenly stems and earthly branches mutually injure or destroy each other, or falls into a墓库 or绝地, then it is a gathering of many evils, and certain calamity will occur. In such years, the only way to turn danger into good fortune is to cultivate virtue and act with caution and quietness. All of the above is from the "San Ming Qian."

Whenever the big destiny year and the small destiny year overlap on the same branch, there is no need to consider the Nayin sound element. If the overlapping position is not on the branch corresponding to the person's birth year, it is called 'bingshi' (not reaching the body). For example, those born in the months of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei, if the small destiny year overlaps on the branches of Yin, Shen, Si, or Hai (the first months of each season), it indicates that relatives born in the first months of each season will suffer misfortune. Similarly, those born in the months of Zi, Wu, Mao, or You, if the small destiny year overlaps on the branches of Chen, Xu, Si, or Wei (the middle months of each season), it indicates that relatives born in the middle months of each season will suffer misfortune. If there are no such relatives in the family, then the person themselves will suffer misfortune in that month. Furthermore, if someone dies during the destiny years of Yin, Shen, Si, or Hai, it is called 'chong sang yun' (heavy mourning year), indicating that within three years, another relative will die. This applies to both big and small destiny years. This statement is from the 'Guangxin Ji'. To understand the person's fortune and misfortune throughout their life, one must also consider the 'zhen qi' (true energy). To examine the rise and fall of fortune, one should judge based on the 'xiu sha shen' (auspicious and ominous spirits). All places passed through by both big and small destiny years should be examined together with the 'sheng shen' (beneficial spirit) and 'sha shen' (omen spirit) to determine misfortune and fortune. Combining this with the 'zhen qi' to distinguish between good and bad fortune makes the judgment complete. This statement is from the 'Huzhongzi'.

The rhyme says: If the major and minor cycles coincide with a year of strength or storage, scholars will certainly pass the imperial examinations and achieve success, and officials will be promoted further; if the heavenly stem carries the "imprint" and combines with the "Tianyi Nobleman," and the Lu Spirit and Officialdom position are in harmony, then all auspicious factors are complete. Another rhyme says: One must examine both the major and minor cycles, and also consider the current year's flow; when a year of strength or storage arrives at the right time, it indicates rapid promotion. If one is still an unappointed scholar, he will pass the imperial examination that year; if already in office, he will receive a promotion and be content. Both rhymes are from the "Jin Shu Ming Jue."

Ying和尚 explained: In ancient times, those who were good at singing had songs with lingering echoes that lasted three days, singing melodies in accordance with the palace and commercial scales. Now, however, people sing in a manner of moaning and lamenting, singing funeral songs like "Xie Lu." This indicates that the spirit of mourning and condolence and the spirit of visiting the bereaved have arrived at the family door, and the household spirit and the tomb spirit have been harmed byInauspicious Sha. The term "residence" refers to the fifth position counted forward from the stem of the birth year; "tomb" refers to the fifth position counted backward. "Sāngmén" is located at the second position counted forward from the birth stem, and "diàokè" is located at the second position counted backward. If the current year's sovereign and凶杀 both press upon the major and minor years of destiny, and if they form a crime or a conflict, it will certainly bring about misfortune, and one must take measures in advance to avoid it. The original text of "Luolu Zi" says, "When residence and tomb are in the same place, one is likely to have little joy and much sorrow." Wang's explanation says: the fifth position counted forward from the birth stem is the yang residence, and the fifth position counted backward is the yin tomb. How could these two be in the same place? For example, someone born in the year Guihai, if the fifth position forward encounters Wuchen, then Chen is precisely the storage of water, and thus residence and tomb coincide. At this time, if the current year's destiny and凶杀 also come together, this is referred to as "residence and tomb in the same place," and it is likely to have little joy and much sorrow.

Luolu Zi says: "Disorders arise from Goujiao, and misfortunes occur from Yuanchen's loss." Wang's commentary explains that when the flow year meets the evil spirit Goujiao in the big destiny, it is mostly due to reckless and violent actions that lead to calamities; Yuanchen refers to the Yuanchen star, and encountering it results in most endeavors ending in damage and failure. All of this is from Luolu Zi. Therefore, a person's longevity or premature death depends entirely on whether they encounter life qi; misfortune and fortune, as well as poverty or success, are also determined by destiny limits: if the Five Phases are harmonious and mutually generating, it is auspicious; if they clash and mutually control, it is inauspicious.

Whenever the current year and the major and minor cycles align with the original destiny in a way that is mutually generating, harmonious, or compatible, it brings good fortune. If they align in a way that is mutually controlling and not harmonious, it brings danger. When the five elements of the current year and the major and minor cycles generate the original destiny, it brings the most profound good fortune. Conversely, if the original destiny generates the five elements of the current year and the major and minor cycles, the good fortune is less significant. When the five elements of the current year and the major and minor cycles control the original destiny, it brings more misfortune. If the original destiny controls the five elements of the current year and the major and minor cycles, the misfortune is less severe. Additionally, one should remember that when encountering a fortunate cycle, the three harmonious positions of that cycle indicate the favorable months of the year. When encountering an unfortunate cycle, the four opposing positions of that cycle indicate the dangerous months of the year. The "Hu Zhongzi" says: "If encountering a broken house, there will certainly be repairs or construction; if encountering a gathering of deities, there will certainly be marriage and celebration." "Broken house" is usually located five positions ahead of the original destiny, while "gathering of deities" is usually located four positions before and after the original destiny. If the current year and the major and minor cycles encounter a broken house, there will certainly be matters related to repairs or construction. If there is also the presence of the mourning-and-condolence spirit and the visiting spirit, there will be misfortune. If the current year and the major and minor cycles encounter a gathering of deities, there will certainly be joy from marriage and feasting. However, if they overlap, it may instead indicate illness. The "gathering of deities" refers to the three harmonious positions.

The Hu Zhongzi also says: The worst is "Goujiao," which is most unscrupulous; encountering it will make things always fail. The easiest to bring disaster is "Bathing," both official and private affairs are prone to go wrong. If the current year or the two major years meet Goujiao, the things one is doing will not succeed. If the position of Bathing is also where water is present, it becomes "Bathing Kill." When the current year or the two major years meet it, men will be troubled by official and private documents, while women will suffer financial loss, property damage, and miscarriage. The text continues: "If it is combined with reverse repetition, it divides into three feet and allows for ease; if it is in the area of punishment and harm, it determines that one will face difficulties for the whole year." If the two major years and the birth year conflict with each other, and they overlap, it leads to death.the so-called "reverse repetition" refers to direct opposition, although one will encounter illness in this year, it will not result in a short life.the so-called "punishment and harm" refers to situations where there is punishment and harm but without overlap.

When the flow year and the major and minor cycles arrive at the "Disease" position of the twelfth cycle, one still needs to worry about illness for the current year; when arriving at the "Birth" position, there will still be matters related to childbirth in the current year. Although it is a year of illness, as long as the characters Chen and Xu are not seen, there will be no problem; once Chen and Xu appear, it becomes particularly inauspicious, because Chen is Tianluo and Xu is Diwang, so they should be avoided from the root. When encountering a year of childbirth, as long as the spirits of Mourning-and-Condolence and Guest are not seen, there will be no problem; once they appear, it becomes inauspicious, because the spirits of Mourning-and-Condolence and Guest are transformed from the twoInauspicious Spirit "Huangpan" and "Bao Wei," so they should be particularly avoided. All of the above are from "Hu Zhong Zi."

The concept of "Lù" (favorable position) and its "Chángshēng" (growth) and "Wàng" (prosperity) is such that for someone of the wood element, the亥 position is where its Lù Chángshēng is, and the卯 position is where its Lù Wàng is. The same principle applies to the other five elements. If one wants to know when a person can attain official rank, one should look at the "Yìmǎ" (post-horse), "Jiàn Lù" (established favorable position), and whether "Lù Cái" (favorable position for wealth) and "Lù Guān" (favorable position for official rank) are in harmonious positions. When they are in harmony, it indicates that even a common person can attain official rank; those already in office will experience promotion, and ordinary people will see sudden wealth. For example, those born in the year of Si-You-Chou (the metal triad) have their Yìmǎ in亥. The year of寅 is the旺 position for Yìmǎ, and寅 is in harmony with亥. The year of亥 is the original position of Yìmǎ. Another example is someone born in the year of Guichou. Their Jiàn Lù is in子. The year of丑 is in harmony with子, forming a Lù harmony. The Lù Guān of癸 is of the earth element, and the year of子 is the旺 position for Lù Guān. The Lù Cái of癸 is of the water element, and the year of子 is also the旺 position for Lù Cái. Whenever the big destiny year, small destiny year, and the current year's heavenly stem and earthy branch reach these positions, it is considered a favorable time for Lù Guān. Moreover, the Lù Guān warehouse and the Lù Cái warehouse are both in辰. The year of辰 is in harmony with酉, the Yìmǎ is in亥, and the year of亥 is in harmony with寅. Therefore, it is suitable to hold official positions in the directions of辰,寅,酉, and亥.

Whenever the heavenly stem and earthly branch of one's birth chart align with those of the large and small years and the current year's sovereign, it is considered a favorable gathering. For example, a person born in the year of Guichou, if during a large or small year or the current year he arrives at Wuwu, then Wu combines with Gui, which is a combination of heavenly stems; if he arrives at Renzi, then Zi combines with Chou, which is a combination of earthly branches, and so on. Generally, those with noble destinies often need to undergo punishment and clash to be activated, and must receive the impact and stimulation from the time of birth, the day branch, and the current year's large and small years, before they can be activated. Whether male or female, the fifth position ahead of the birth year branch is considered the 'residence'; if the current year's sovereign exactly falls on this position, it indicates that this year will have more misfortunes, or may suffer losses due to legal disputes, and any endeavor will encounter obstacles. If there are auspicious deities to rescue, the misfortunes will be lighter. For example, a person born in the year of Jiazi, the fifth position ahead of his birth year branch is Jisi, and Jisi is his residence; when he encounters the year of Jisi, it is called 'the sovereign enters the residence', and so on. All of the above is from the book 'San Ming Qian'.

The rhyme says "When the dwelling spirit is broken by a clash, relocation is certain." If the dwelling spirit is clashed and broken, one must move. For example, a person born in the year of Wuzi, his dwelling is at the fifth position ahead, which is Guisi. If the current year's sovereign star clashes with Guisi, there will be events of moving and changing residence that year.

In a person's four pillars of birth (year, month, day, and hour) plus the胎元 (womb origin), there are five sets of heavenly stems and earthly branches. If the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the current year's sovereign (流年太岁) exactly match any of these five, it is called 「colliding with the命杀」 (colliding with the life-destroying force). For example, someone born onBingyin (Bingyin) day will collide with the命杀 if they encounter aBingyin (Bingyin) year. The most dangerous collision is when it occurs on the day pillar. Officials or people in positions of wealth and power who collide with it often meet a fatal end; even if they survive, they will break their good fortune and remain unambitious and unsuccessful throughout their lives. Those who are at home and idle may suffer misfortune for themselves and their wives. Commoners encountering this often experience the death of their wives. In general, those who collide with it on the day pillar rarely escape unscathed. Those who collide on the hour pillar may lose their sons if they have any, or may gain a son if they do not. If the hour of birth matches the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the current year, and this happens again after the age of fifty, it may lead to the person's death.

The book gives several examples. One official was born in the year Bingyin, month Gengyin, day Bingchen, and hour Jichou. In the year Bingchen, he was appointed governor of Raozhou, but was later impeached and dismissed from office, and was not reappointed for more than twenty years. Another official, a court attendant, was born in the year Renshen, month Dingwei, day Dingmao, and hour Xinhai. In the year Dingmao, he died due to a clash with his day pillar. A minister in charge of literary affairs, born in the year Yihai, month Jichou, day Xinwei, and hour Bingshen, died after losing his wife while living at home in the year Xinwei, and shortly afterwards was reappointed and died. A deputy official, born in the year Wuchen, month Yimao, day Jichou, and hour Renshen, died in the year Renshen due to a clash with his hour pillar. The book Luolu Zi says, "When meeting the native land, one should retreat and avoid position," meaning when the flow year collides with the native land, one should retire early. It also says, "Disaster and fortune lie within the position of the flow year, and their manifestation depends on the agitation of the day and hour pillars." The disasters and fortunes of a year are contained within the position of the flow year, and whether they manifest depends on whether the day pillar or hour pillar is agitated. All of this is from the Guangxinji.
