A child is startled and frightened, crying out to Lei Gong (the god of thunder)

Song (宋) · Liao Zhong (廖中) · Volume 20 / 40

Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

A child encountering such a situation—before the age of twelve, especially under three—will suffer from fright, illness, or falls if the Post-horse is stirred by the small age or the Tai Su, or if the Officialdom horse is disturbed. This is called "Leigong." For adults, if the year's stream encounters the horse and "Bingfu" together, it indicates fear and illness; if it encounters "Guanfu" together, it indicates fear due to legal troubles; if it enters the dwelling position, it indicates verbal disputes. In general, one should judge according to the auspicious and inauspicious deities in the stream year. The dwelling refers to the position determined by counting six branches from the birth year. For example, the dwelling of a Jiazi year person is in Si.

An elderly person with a deficiency of qi is prone to foot ailments.

People over forty, if their big destiny is again attacked by the year's master, tend to suffer from qi deficiency, lower back pain, and foot pain; elderly people who encounter a fortunate destiny and then fall ill often experience vomiting and loss of appetite. Whenever the elderly meet such a destiny and the year's master, their illness is mostly characterized by qi consumption, shortness of breath, and weakness; young people encountering such a situation will also certainly fall ill. This is because both the elderly and the young cannot endure much running and riding—horse, in the Five Phases, is a divine being associated with movement and jumping.

A song says: When four horses converge towards the original stem, one must distinguish between good and bad. Good ones indicate honor and prosperity, while bad ones lead to ruin and loneliness. If the four horses are well matched, the person will be honored and esteemed; if not well matched, they will lose all family wealth, live alone, and if they become monks or Taoists, they will love to travel around. This saying comes from the "Chen Zhi Yuan Mei."

Those born with the branches Hai, Mao, and Wei should not have their destiny pillar sitting on Si, the position of the horse. If any one of these branches is present, they may be stable in their youth, but later will turn to poverty. If all three branches are seen along with Si, even with official rank and experience, they will ultimately end up in a lowly position. The rhyme says: Those born with Hai, Mao, and Wei having the horse position in their destiny pillar, men often suffer injuries, decline, loneliness, and poverty. If all three branches are heavily seen along with the horse, they will find it hard to achieve great fame and will not be able to become someone just below the scholars and officials.

A person born in the Jiwei year, with the Jisi month, Guimao day, and Guihai hour, has the three branches Hai, Mao, and Wei fully present, forming the Wood triad. The horse, which is the禄 (favorable position) of the person, is in the Dingsi position, which is the绝 (decline) of the horse. This person indeed fell into decline at the age of forty-two. Another example is a person born in the Guihai year, with the Dingsi month, Dingyou day, and Xinhai hour. Both the Guihai heavenly stem and earthly branch belong to water, and all three positions in the destiny chart fall into the绝 (decline) of the elements. For a Guihai person, fire is considered wealth, but fire is dead in You and even more so in Hai. His father was an official, but this person ended up begging from door to door until death. This statement is from the "Jin Shu Ming Jue."

Volume 17 · Discussing the Favorable Star and the Horse Together

The Ghost Valley Legacy says: When the time pillar is occupied by the day stem's luck, the person is like finding a path on the blue clouds; when the post-horse in the year, month, day, hour, and fetal positions all run together, they can ascend to the Yellow Gate and become a prime minister.

The concept of "the hour of birth sitting on the day's禄" is called "ascending to the clouds and finding the path." For example, if someone born on a Jia day has the寅 hour, since寅 is the禄 of Jia, it is sufficient if this寅 has strength and supports the day's main element. Even if the person's year, month, and day elements have no strength, they can still achieve high status and distinction, though their fortune and longevity may not be long. If the horses in the year, month, day, hour, and胎 positions are all active, the person is certainly of noble birth, a scholar or a man of literature. This saying comes from the "Ghost Valley Legacy."

Luolu Zi says: Those who have lost their official rank and are driven away by horses can only endure a bleak and desperate existence. Conversely, those who have both official rank and horses in the same place do not need to become San Tai; they will certainly attain the status of Ba Zuo, which is equivalent to high official rank.

Wang's commentary says: The old view claimed that those born in the year of Jiaxu who are born in April are said to have turned their back on the Jiayin禄 and chased the Shen马, but this is incorrect. Both禄 and马 can bring wealth and honor. If there is still a horse to chase, how could one end up in a desperate situation? In fact, "背" refers to the opposite of yin and yang, and "逐" means to be driven away or expelled, not to chase. For example, someone born in the year of Guihai who receives the month of Jiayin: the禄 of Gui is in Zi, and Jiayin is directly opposite Zi; theThe Post-horse is in Si, and Jiayin is in conflict with Si, thus driving away the horse. Previously, the conflict caused the horse to be driven away, and later the opposition made it impossible to reach the禄, both things were missed, so one could only be left in a desperate and lonely situation.

As for the example of "Lù Mǎ Tóng Xiāng" (Lords and Post-horse in the same native land), take the case of someone born in the year of Jiashen (甲申). If their month is Dingchou (丁丑), day is Jihai (己亥), and hour is Bingyin (丙寅), then the branch of the hour, Yin (寅), is both the "Lù" (Lords) of Jia (甲) and the "Yì Mǎ" (Post-horse) of the year Shen (申). Thus, the Lords and Post-horse meet at the position of the Emperor's seat. Moreover, the pillars of Jiashen, Jihai, and Bingyin all receive the clear and pure life qi (生气) of the Five Phases (五行). This person is destined to attain high official rank, reaching the level of the Three Grand Ministers (三公), and to live beyond seventy years. This statement is from the "Luolu Zi" (珞琭子).

The Three Destiny Manual says: For example, a person born in the year Bingyin, their established fortune is in Si, and the post-horse is in Shen. If they are born in May or June, they cannot reach either the fortune or the post-horse, which is called 'back fortune chasing horse.' This often leads to a life of hardship and poverty.

All patterns such as establishing fortune, facing fortune, establishing horse, and facing horse, if they also meet the condition of nobleman's support and strong spiritual energy, then they are certainly destined for nobility and a life of receiving salary. Conversely, if one is facing misfortune and bad horse, and the horse and fortune are destroyed or harmed, and also meet the conditions of being trapped, dying, or encountering kongwang, then they will have many losses and failures throughout their lives, unable to cover their bodies with clothes or satisfy their hunger, and are mostly people who ruin their families and wealth. This statement comes from the "Taiyi Jiangdan Baojing."

Luolu Zi says: Those whose heavenly stem and horse are in the same native land will certainly attain the rank of San Tai and eight seats. In terms of position, the time stem is the highest, the day stem is in the middle, and the month stem is the lowest. For example, the fate of Di Xianggong: born in the year of Wushen, seventh month, day of Xinwei, and time of Guisi. The stem Wu has its native land in Si, and the horse of Xinwei day is also in Si. The time stem Gui combines with the year stem Wu, so he holds the position of minister and general. Another example is someone born in the year of Gengshen, first month, day of Bingwu, and time of Yiwei. The stem Geng has its native land in Shen, and the horse of the month and day are both in this position, so he attains the rank of prime minister. Another case is someone born in the year of Wuxu, second month, day of Yimao, and time of Dingsi. The stem Wu has its native land in Si, and the horse of the month is in the same native land, which is the fate of Wei Daifu, who became the governor of Wuyang Prefecture (Guangzhou). This statement comes from the Jinshu Mingjie.

The concept of "Lù Mǎ Tóng Xiāng" (Lusha Tongxiang) indicates that if the禄 (Lush) and 马 (Ma) are in the same earthly branch, it signifies wealth and status, regardless of whether it appears in the birth month, day, or hour. However, the fortune may vary in thickness. For example, if someone's destiny is in the water triad of Shen-Zi-Chen and their heavenly stem is Jia, then both the禄 and 马 are in寅. Those born in Jiazi or Jiachen years will experience prosperity. But if someone born in Jiashen year encounters this, the寅 and the original Shen branch will clash, causing damage to the destiny and leading to obstacles and inauspiciousness. Similar reasoning applies to other cases. This concept is mentioned in the "San Ming Ti Yao." The "Zhi Mi Fu" also states that although Lusha Tongxiang is favorable, it is most undesirable if there is damage in the Five Phases.

Rush of official favor and horse power

Wealth is the source of life, and the horse is the foundation supporting the body; wealth is most disliked when it is broken, and the horse is most avoided when it falls into the void. For example, those born in the years of Yin, Wu, and Xu have their horse in Shen. For the year Jia, the wealth is in Yin. Using the Five Tiger遁 method, Yin is transformed to Bing, and Shen is transformed to Ren. Therefore, Bing is called "Heavenly Wealth" and Ren is called "Heavenly Horse." When these two characters appear alternately in the day pillar or the hour pillar, it is called "Heavenly Wealth and Heavenly Horse."

There are also cases where for those born in the years of Yin, Wu, and Xu, the horse is in Shen and the hour stem is obtained by Geng; for those born in the years of Hai, Mao, and Wei, the horse is in Si and the hour stem is obtained by Bing; for those born in the years of Shen, Zi, and Chen, the horse is in Yin and the hour stem is obtained by Jia; and for those born in the years of Si, You, and Chou, the horse is in Hai and the hour stem is obtained by Ren. These are all cases where the branch of the horse matches with the stem of the same element. The method is to use the day branch to seek the hour stem, and the hour branch to seek the day stem. Whenever the stems and branches of the year, month, day, and hour are interchanged and matched in this way, it is called 'Lumu Jiaochi'. If the Lu and Ma are not found in the year or month, but are found instead in the day and hour, it is even more favorable. This saying comes from the book 'Yan Dongshou Shu' (the original text says 'Wu Dongshou Shu').

The Jade Cabinet Conceals a Pearl in a Grid

The rhyme says: The official's position is before the horse's position, and in the middle sits a god, which is called "Juyu Cangzhu." This allows for constant renewal in all matters. A destiny of supreme importance, born under the Zi (Rat) destiny, will have no misfortunes throughout life, eventually reaching the rank of minister. For example, the birth chart of a former prime minister, with the year of Yihai, month of Dinghai, day of Wuchen, and hour of Guihai, is of this pattern. This statement comes from the "Zixuju."

Ma Zicai's destiny chart

This pattern requires the presence of "Lù Mǎ Kù" (Lucky Horse Repository): when the earthly branches form the Triple Harmony of巳, 酉, and 丑 (Gold Metal Triplicity) and the heavenly stem is 辛 (Xin), the Lù Mǎ Kù falls on 戌 (Xu); when the earthly branches form the Triple Harmony of亥, 卯, and 未 (Wood Triplicity) and the heavenly stem is 乙 (Yi), the Lù Mǎ Kù falls on 辰 (Chen).

Enclosed Wealth and Enclosed Horse

Those born in the years of Yihai, Yimao, and Yiwei, if they see Chen in their day or hour pillar, form this pattern: The "Lushu" (favorable position) of Yi is in Mao, and the "Yimashi" (post-horse) of the Hai-Mao-Wei triple harmony wood combination is in Si. Chen is exactly between Mao and Si, being sandwiched between the Lushu and Yimashi. Similarly, those born in the years of Xinsi, Xinyou, and Xinchou, if they see Xu in their day or hour pillar, follow the same principle. Such a destiny, if not disrupted by other harmful spirits, can be considered as a five-grade official's fate. This passage is from the "Yuxiao Baodian."

The rhyme says: "The 'Lushu' (Wealthy Post) and 'Yi Ma' (Post-horse) come from the hidden stem flying into their position, and they are not subject to punishment, clash, or control. If they appear in the season when the Five Phases are prosperous and strong, such a person will certainly be of great dignity and status. For example, the Lushu of Wu is in Si. Using Wu to start the hidden stem calculation, the Si position reveals Ding and Ji. The Lushu of Ding is in Wu, which is called 'Fei Tian Lu' (Flying Heavenly Wealth). Another example is a person born in the year of Wu Shen. His Yi Ma is in Yin. Starting the hidden stem calculation, he arrives at Jiayin, which is called 'Fei Tian Lu Ma' (Flying Heavenly Wealth and Post-horse). The same method applies to all other stems. This saying comes from the 'Li Yu Ge' (The Song of Reasoning the Foolish)."

In general, the "Lù" (Wealth) and "Yìmǎ" (Post-horse) must be derived through the method of "dùn" (hidden) and actually present in the pillar, in order to have the strongest power. For example, if someone is born on a day of Jiǎ (Jia) and receives the Bingyin pillar, this is considered a hidden Lù and Yìmǎ. Such a person will experience prosperity and success when they reach the fire elements of Sì and Wǔ in their major life cycles. This statement is from the text "Cùnzhū Chǐbì."

The song says: A person born in Gengyin will have a good birth date if they meet Renshen again, because Geng's official and horse are both in Shen, so it is called "Lusha Tongxiang" and Shen is considered auspicious; but once there is a dry branch with the sound of metal, which is the Shangyin, it will clash, causing conflict in the heavenly stems and destruction in the earthly branches, thus leading to a destiny of loneliness and poverty. The explanation is: When Gengyin meets Renshen, the official and horse are both in Shen, which should be a noble destiny, but the "Nayin" of Gengyin column belongs to wood, which is overcome by metal in Shen, and also Yin and Shen clash with each other, turning good into bad. This passage comes from "Guigu Ya jue".

The rhyme says: Those who have the Post-horse located in the Growth position will certainly be wealthy and fond of learning; those who have the禄 (favor) encountering the Prosperity position will never lack money throughout their lives. However, if one's destiny includes the hardships of exile and punishment, it is because they also carry the two凶煞 (malevolent stars) of 悬针 (suspended needle) and 劫杀 (plundering killer). It also says: If the禄 is present in the time pillar but the Post-horse does not come to match, such a person will only have a little money, be ashamed to speak, and find it difficult to attract talented people; if the禄 and Post-horse are located in the dead or绝 (decline) positions, it is like closing the door and vowing never to open it again, meaning their future is blocked and unattainable. This passage is from the "Lin Kai Wu Ming."

On Officials and Spirits

Official Seal

Each of the Ten Heavenly Stems has its own official star, and the matching method is: Jia pairs with Xin, Yi pairs with Geng, Bing pairs with Rui, Ding pairs with Ren, Wu pairs with Yi; Ji pairs with Jia, Geng pairs with Ding, Xin pairs with Bing, Ren pairs with Ji, Gui pairs with Wu. These pairings are based on the one that controls the stem and has opposite yin and yang. The book gives an example, stating that Jia Wood takes Geng Metal as its official star, and the other stems are similarly inferred. This table is from the "Three Fate Compilation."

Generate official position.

The so-called "generative official" refers to the official star being exactly in its own position of origin: people with the heavenly stem Jia or Yi (wood) receive the earthly branches Xinsi, Gengshen, and Xinyou; those with Bing or Ding (fire) receive Renshen, Guihai, and Renzi; those with Wu or Ji (earth) receive Yihai, Jiayin, and Yimao; those with Geng or Xin (metal) receive Bingyin, Dingsi, and Bingwu; and those with Ren or Gui (water) receive Wushen, Jihai, and Wuzi. If such a destiny is further naturally supported by auspicious deities such as the Post-horse, Xuetang, and Nobleman, there is no failure to achieve fame and success. This passage is from the "Li Xuzhong Book."

Enclosed official salary

Jia wood takes Xin metal as its official, and if the birth chart contains the Guiyou column, it is called 'official luck'. If Renshen and Jiaxu are placed before and after respectively, it becomes 'official luck sandwiched between'. Yi wood takes Geng metal as its official, and if the Jiashen column is present, it is called 'official luck'. If Guiwei and Yiyou are placed before and after respectively, the principle is the same. The rest of the stems follow this example. Those with this pattern in their birth charts are better than those with just one official. If the official luck position is also flanked by auspicious deities before and after, it is also a good thing. This passage is from the Taiyi Jing.

When discussing the official star, it is necessary to find it in the places of growth, officialdom, and prosperity. Only the inherent energy of the heavenly stem and earthly branch should be considered, not the nayin sound element. For those with the heavenly stem of Jia or Yi (wood), if they have Xinsi, Gengshen, or Xinyou, and for those with the heavenly stem of Ren or Gui (water), if they have Wushen, Jihai, or Wuzi, this is considered true official star. Cases like Jia getting Xin or Yi getting Geng are naturally harmonious because a yang heavenly stem is paired with a yin earthly branch, and a yin earthly branch is paired with a yang heavenly stem, thus yin and yang naturally harmonize. If not paired this way, even if the official star is present in the birth chart, the yin will not accept the yang, and the yang will not be able to attract the yin, so it will never be effective. True official stars are best when they are in the prosperity position, next when they are in the officialdom position, and least when they are in the growth position. If further supported by auspicious elements such as the post-horse, xuetang, literary stars, and tianyi nobleman, then even without the support of a major year or fortune, one will eventually achieve success and progress. This passage is from the "Yan Dongshou Book."

Interchangeable Official Pattern (Great Wealth and Honor)

When the heavenly stems and earthly branches of two pillars intersect to form an official relationship, it is called "mutual official" (交互官). For example, Jiashen meets Yiyou, Bingzi meets Renzi, Yimao meets Wushen, Gengwu meets Renwu, Dingsi meets Xinhai, and Guihai meets Dingsi, all fall into this pattern. An example is Fan Zhongyan, the Wen Zhenggong, who was born in the year Bingwu, month Jihai, day Wuzi, and hour Renzi, which exactly matches this configuration.

Liu He official star pattern

The rhyme says: When the official star forms a branchLiu He with the person's birth chart, few understand this; moreover, the official star must be in the same sheng within the same jin to be truly remarkable. If such an official star appears directly in the day pillar or hour pillar, the person will hold high positions such as Taishi and Taifu, and when traveling, will be accompanied by banners and ceremonial attendants. For example, a Taishi named Cai was born in the Dinghai year, RENYIN month, RENCHEN day, and XINHAI hour, which fits this pattern. This statement comes from the "Zi Xu Ju."

The Seal of the Upper and Lower Officials

This section arranges the heavenly stems in two rows for comparison, with the one above and the one below forming a pair, one being the official star and the other the seal of the imperial court, hence called "upper and lower official and seal." These ten combinations are also known as "Ten Beauties." Such a person is likely to pass the imperial examination and hold an important post near the palace, and even ordinary people encountering this would not have a hard life. If the annual sovereign's luck falls on the third position, scholars can pass the imperial examination; officials already in the regular promotion system may enter the Zhongshu and Chushihai palaces, eventually becoming prime ministers. Therefore, an old poem says that if a person encounters such combinations in three places, his salary will certainly be high enough to reach the level of a marquis.

The official has a seal below.

For example, if someone with a Jia wood destiny has a辛 metal in their month pillar, 辛 is the official star of Jia. If the day or hour pillar also has 丙 fire, 丙 can combine with 辛 to form a seal, transforming into a seal star. This is called "official with seal below," indicating a high official position and noble reputation and status.

In the official position, there is food and union.

For example, a person with the heavenly stem Jia (甲) representing wood sees Xin (辛) metal as the official star. The water generated by Xin, which is Gui (癸), is the food god for Jia wood. Additionally, Bing (丙) fire can harmonize with Xin metal. If these elements appear in the month, day, and hour pillars respectively, it is called 'official star with food and harmony below'. Such people often hold official positions along with additional duties or side jobs. Even ordinary individuals may develop another skill outside their main profession.

Official will be killed.

The official star and its own storage are together, called "official star meeting killing": for those born under Jia or Yi wood, seeing Xinchou; for those born under Bing or Ding fire, seeing Renchen; for those born under Wu or Ji earth, seeing Yiwei; for those born under Geng or Xin metal, seeing Bingxu; and for those born under Ren or Gui water, seeing Wuchen. Taking the first example, Xin metal can overcome Jia or Yi wood, which is the official star, and the storage of metal is in Chou, so the official star and storage are in the same column. The other examples follow the same pattern. Scholars may encounter the main achievement of passing the imperial examination, warriors may encounter the main achievement of establishing military merit, and ordinary people may encounter the main achievement of surpassing the common people in skills and abilities.

Five Viscera

When the heavenly stems thatrestrain (overcome) me and the triple harmony formation thatrestrain (overcome) me appear together, it is called "Wuguan" (Five Officials). For people with the heavenly stems Jia and Yi (wood), if they encounter Geng and Xin (metal) and the metal triple harmony formation Si-You-Chou, it is Wuguan. For people with the heavenly stems Bing and Ding (fire), if they encounter Ren and Gui (water) and the water triple harmony formation Shen-Zi-Chen, it is Wuguan. For people with the heavenly stems Wu and Ji (earth), if they encounter Jia and Yi (wood) and the wood triple harmony formation Hai-Mao-Wei, it is Wuguan. For people with the heavenly stems Geng and Xin (metal), if they encounter Bing and Ding (fire) and the fire triple harmony formation Yin-Wu-Xu, it is Wuguan. This pattern is also called "Juguan" (converged officials), "Jugui" (converged ghosts), and "Yaozhesha" (夭折杀, premature death killer). Whether it is auspicious or inauspicious depends on the strength of the elements. If the month is when the ghost and spirit are in command and have vitality, it indicates that those who study and hold official positions will achieve great success, while ordinary people will suffer sudden death and early demise. If the ghost and spirit are weak and lack vitality, then scholars will die young, while ordinary people can only become low-ranking officials. This passage is from the "Guangxinji" (广信集).

True Official

People born in the year of Jichou receive Xinchou, and those born in the year of Xinchou receive Bingyin. This kind of combination is called "true official," and the person's destiny is either prominent or wealthy.所谓 true official refers to the immediate following earthly branch after one's birth year, which is the position of the preceding earthly branch. This statement is from the "Shen Bai Jing."

Cui Guan Ge

For example, if Gengchen is seen with Yiyou, or Wuwu is seen with Guichou, the official star from the lower column moves upward to stimulate the upper column, which is called 'cui guan', indicating rapid promotion. This comes from the Taiyi Jing.

Dark Official

For example, people born with the metal stems 庚 (Geng) and 辛 (Xin) are supposed to have the fire stems 丙 (Bing) and 丁 (Ding) as their official stars. However, if their birth chart does not contain 丙 or 丁, but instead has the branches 寅 (Yin), 午 (Wu), and 戌 (Xu) forming a fire trinity, this also indicates the presence of an official star, though it is hidden and not openly visible. This is called "dark official" or "暗官," because the earth branches have already formed a fire trinity. This statement is from the "Broad Record" or "广录."

Another hidden official position

Another view of hidden officials is that the one capable of controlling the excessive energy of the native's destiny is considered valuable: a person with too much fire energy should go to a water place; a person with too much earth energy should go to a wood place; a person with too much metal energy should go to a fire place; a person with too much water energy should go to a earth place; a person with too much wood energy should go to a metal place. For example, a person born in the year of Xinyou, month of Xinmao, day of Guichou, and hour of Xin, the wood in the month is brought to the western metal place and is controlled, plus the accurate position of the禄, so he becomes prominent, being a leading figure. Another example is a person born in the year of Yihai, month of Gengchen, day of Xinmao, and hour of Gengyin, although there is a lot of metal energy of Geng and Xin, it is fortunate that the fire energy hidden in the寅 position can melt the metal. Another example is a person born in the year of Guichou, month of Renxu, day of Xinyou, and hour of Dingyou, the whole body is in the western metal place, and has never suffered the hardship of rising to prominence, but the hardship has gone too far, and the situation is not balanced in the end, so he is only destined to be a mid-level official in the military. This passage is from the "Tianyuan Biangu Shu".

Names, positions, and official titles

"The name, position, and official title" are determined using the "Nayin" Five Phases. The divine spirit generated by Nayin is the food god, and encountering it is considered favorable. This statement is from "Lin Kai Wu Ming."

The official and noble hall pattern.

The song verse indicates the official and noble positions for each of the ten heavenly stems: Jia is at Wei (sheep), Bing at Si, Yi at Chen (Azure Dragon), Ding at Yin (tiger), Wu located among the earth positions of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, Ji at Xu (dog), Geng at Hai (pig), Xin at Shen (monkey), Ren at You (chicken), and Gui at Wu (horse). Those who occupy these positions may attain the rank of the Three High Officials. If the official and noble positions are further combined with the seal, the Lu Spirit, and the nobleman, they become even more esteemed. This statement comes from the "Jin Nang Jing" and "Zi Xu Ju." The "San Ming Qian" refers to it as "Tian Guan Gui Shen," also known as "Lu Guan Wang Xiang," indicating a person with high official rank and smooth career advancement without obstacles.
