Chan Master Xing-yin of Buddha's Hand Rock in Mount Lu was a man of Yanmen. His surname is not known in detail. In early years he studied Confucianism. One day he renounced the mundane and left home, determined to seek the true purport, and then traveled to visit teachers. He first called on Chan Master Zhen of Mount Lumen in Xiangyang. Teacher and disciple were in accord in the Way. Soon he reached Jianghuai and climbed Mount Lu. On the north of the mountain there was a rock shaped like five fingers. Below it was a stone cave, deep and secluded, more than three zhang. The Master dwelt in it in meditation. Therefore he was called Monk Buddha's Hand Rock. He did not ordain disciples. There was a monk in a neighboring hut who served him with offerings. Often strange deer, kingfisher-like birds, and tame creatures circled at his side. The ruler of the Southern Tang, of the Li family, admired him. Three times he sent envoys to summon him, but he did not rise. He firmly requested him to go to Qixian Temple to open the teaching. Before a month passed, he secretly returned to his rock chamber. A monk asked: "What is the manifest form responding to the present?" The Master raised one finger. (Fayan separately said: "Is there still or not?") One day he showed slight illness. He said to his attendant monk: "When the sun nears noon, I shall go." The attendant monk was just replying. The Master got down from his bed, walked a few steps, stood erect, and transformed. On the summit of the rock there was one pine tree that withered on the same day. He was over seventy years old. The ruler ordered a painter to make his portrait. Spare fragrant firewood was prepared to burn and collect his remains; a stupa was built on the shady side of the rock.

Chan Master Hui-zhong of Guiyang in Quanzhou was a man of Xianyou County in this prefecture. His surname was Chen. At nine years old he left home at the mountain monastery. After receiving full precepts, he carried his staff and traveled to observe the regions, calling on Monk Thatched Hut. Thatched Hut asked: "From what direction have you come?" The Master said: "I come from Six-Eyed Peak." Thatched Hut said: "Do you also possess the six superknowledges?" The Master said: "My affliction is not double-pupiled eyes." Thatched Hut approved of him. The Master returned to his old mountain. It happened that Emperor Wuzong of Tang abolished the teaching, and by regulation he became a layman in white. When Emperor Xuanzong restored the teaching, the Master said: "The ancients had a saying: An ascended Daoist priest does not receive registers; a buddha-attained sramanera does not possess the precept dharma." Then he ate nothing after noon and did not dwell in a house, but practiced Chan. He composed three verses, saying:
雪後始諳松桂別雲收方見濟河分
Only after the snow does one know the difference between pine and cassia; only when clouds clear does one see the Ji and He rivers divide.
不因世主教還俗那辨雞群與鶴群
If not because the worldly sovereign's teaching made one return to lay life, how could one distinguish the chicken flock from the crane flock?

For many years worldly affairs have idly surged and surged; though wearing the square robe, one is not yet a monk.

The Master, from the time he first engaged in practice and paid homage until he returned to the origin and manifested extinction, never once descended from the mountain. He was buried two hundred paces east of the stupa of Monk Wuliao. It was called the East Stupa. After several years, that stupa suddenly split apart, with the crack extending over a zhang along the steps. At the time, the monk in charge of the stupa was about to open it. In the night, during a quiet repast, he saw the West Stupa's fixed-body [master] speak, saying: "My remains have already troubled you to rebury them. Now the East Stupa need not be opened again." The stupa master, endowed with spiritual responsiveness, called upon the faithful donors to repair and adorn it anew. To this day, incense and lamps continue without interruption. At the time, these were called the true bodies of the two [masters] Chen and Shen. As for Chan Master Wuliao's succession to Mazu and his deeds, they are extensively recorded in a separate chapter.
