中孚 璚英朱草,仁政得道。鳧鷖在渚,福祿來下。

The appearance of rare treasures like the jing of qiongyu and the red grass, zhucao, signifies the verification of benevolent governance in accordance with the great way; wild geese and sea gulls resting on the small islets in the water indicate the descent of blessings and good fortune. This grove takes its meaning from the poem "Fu Yi" in the Book of Songs, and when consulted for seeking blessings, it indicates that virtue has reached its peak and good fortune will follow.

小過 陳蔡之厄,從者飢瘦。明德上通,憂不為凶。

Confucius was trapped between the states of Chen and Ci, with his disciples starving and thin; yet the bright virtue ascended to heaven, and misfortune ultimately did not lead to calamity. This oracle indicates that although one may face hardship, their virtue remains undiminished, and when questioned aboutpredicament, it signifies that one will eventually be able to escape.

既濟 春桃生花,季女宜家。受福多年,男為邦君。

In spring, peach trees bloom, and it is most auspicious for a young maiden to marry and establish a family; in the years that follow, she will enjoy great blessings, and her sons will become rulers of a state. This oracle draws from the meaning of the poem "Poetry: Peach Blossom" (Shi Jing · Tao Yao), and when consulted about marriage and descendants, it indicates great good fortune followed by manifest blessings.

未濟 徑邪賊田,政惡傷民。夫婦咒詛,太山覆顛。

A crooked path encroaches on the fields, and harsh decrees harm the people. Even couples secretly curse each other, and Mount Tai seems about to collapse. This indicates a ruler with oppressive policies losing the people's support. When divining about state affairs, it foretells widespread public resentment leading to collapse.

The Forest of Zhen (the Sixty-fourth Hexagram of Zhen)

賁 仁政不暴,鳳凰來舍。四時順節,民安其居。

Promoting benevolent governance without resorting to cruelty, the phoenix comes to dwell. The four seasons each follow their proper order, and the people live securely in their homes. The Book of Documents, Yu Ji says, 'The Xiangshao is played nine times, and the phoenix comes to appear,' which signifies the response of auspicious birds to a virtuous ruler. This forest has harmony between superiors and inferiors, national peace and security, and auspicious results in planning matters.

乾 八口九頭,長舌破家。帝辛沈湎,商滅其墟。

A monster with eight mouths and nine heads arises, its long tongue spreading false words, leading to the ruin of the family's fortune. King Zhou of Shang, Di Xin, became addicted to wine and women, and believed in slander, ultimately causing the country to fall and the capital to become a wasteland. This forest uses the monstrous form to symbolize the harm of many mouths speaking falsely. When divined, it indicates calamity from words and the downfall of family and state.

坤 鬼守我門,呼伯入山。去其室家,舍其兆墓。

A ghostly presence guards the entrance, summoning the eldest brother of the household to go into the mountains. People are forced to leave their houses and fields, abandoning even the ancestral burial ground. Ancients referred to the burial area as "zhao," and abandoning the ancestral tomb signifies the extreme state of exile. This indicates the owner of the forest will experience migration and dispersion, losing their place and having no place to return. The divination for the household and travel is ominous.

屯 日出阜東,山蔽其明。章甫薦履,箕子佯狂。剝之泰)

The sun rises from the eastern earth mountain but is obscured by a high mountain. The ceremonial cap "Zhangfu" is placed underfoot as footwear, indicating a reversal of status and hierarchy. Ji Zi saw King Zhou's tyranny and had to feign madness to avoid disaster, as recorded in the "Records of the Grand Historian: The Family of Song's Weizi." This indicates that the person in question is a virtuous individual being obstructed, with disorder in rank and hierarchy, suggesting the need to remain hidden and cautious. The same divination also shows "Bao transforming into Tai."

蒙 戴盆望天,不見星辰。顧小失大,福逃牆外。

He is wearing a basin on his head and looking up at the sky but cannot see any stars. He is focused only on small gains and thus loses the bigger picture, allowing good fortune to slip away from him. Sima Qian in his letter to Ren An wrote, "How can one look at the sky while wearing a basin?" implying that two things cannot be achieved at the same time. This person's understanding is obstructed, leading to a loss of greater opportunities, and the divination indicates an unfavorable outcome.

需 兩輪日轉,南上大阪。四馬共轅,無有重難。與語笑言。

The vehicle's two wheels turn all day, moving southward up a high slope. Four horses pull the same yoke, and even the heaviest load does not feel burdensome, traveling all the way in talk and laughter. This forest symbolizes the image of working together with unity, indicating the owner has many helpers, the journey is smooth, and it is auspicious for travel, partnerships, and seeking wealth.

訟 羊驚狼虎,聳耳群聚。行旅稽難,留連愁苦。

A flock of sheep is startled by wolves and tigers, raising their ears and crowding together. Travelers outside face obstacles and difficulties, being detained in a foreign place, experiencing worry and hardship. This situation uses a weak animal encountering fierce beasts to symbolize a dangerous situation. Divination regarding travel and lawsuits often encounters obstacles, indicating a凶 (adverse) outcome.

師 楩生荊山,命制輸班。袍衣剝脫,夏熱冬寒。飢餓枯槁,眾人莫憐。

The楩 tree grows in the Jing Mountain, and it is ordered to be cut down by Gongshu Ban to make tools. Its bark is stripped away like a robe, exposed to scorching summer heat and freezing winter cold, withering and憔悴 without anyone showing compassion. Gongshu Ban is also known as Lu Ban, who is most skilled in using large timber. This forest, using good materials and being destroyed, symbolizes a virtuous person being forced into labor and suffering. If one consults this divination, it indicates labor and injury, which is ominous.

比 鳥飛無翼,兔走折足。不常其德,自為羞辱。

A bird wishes to fly but has no wings, a rabbit wants to run but has broken legs. Virtue cannot remain constant, leading only to self-shame. The Analects of Confucius, Book of Zilu, cites 'Not maintaining constant virtue, one may suffer disgrace,' which originates from the third line of the hexagram of Constancy (Heng) in the I Ching. This indicates that Lin's efforts are not in accordance with his will, his actions are repeated without success, and the divination is unfavorable.

小畜 條風制氣,萬物出生。明庶長養,花葉壯茂。

The northeast wind "Tiaofeng" regulates the seasonal changes, prompting all things to sprout; the eastern wind "Mingshu feng" nourishes growth, causing flowers and leaves to flourish. The names of the eight winds are mentioned in the "Astronomical Training" section of the "Huainanzi." This indicates timely seasons and vigorous vitality, making it auspicious for matters of birth, nurture, and the beginning of careers.

履 坤厚地德,萬物蕃息。平康正直,以綏大福。

The earth is vast and benevolent, bearing all things and supporting the growth and proliferation of myriad creatures. A person who is peaceful, harmonious, upright, and free from evil will thus attract great blessings. "Peace, health, and uprightness" are mentioned in the "Book of Documents · Hongfan" as the three virtues. This person possesses great virtue and can bear things, enjoying abundant blessings and happiness. Divination regarding the household and descendants is favorable.

泰 昴畢附耳,將軍乘怒。路徑隔塞,燕雀驚駭。

The stars of the Hairy Head mansion and the Net mansion are conflicting with the star of the Ear, indicating heavenly signs of military affairs; the general, acting out of anger, mobilizes troops, but the roads are blocked and impassable, even the sparrows and starlings fly away in all directions. The star of the Ear governs slander and border troops, as mentioned in the "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Offices." This indicates that weapons and warfare will suddenly erupt, travel will be obstructed, and the divination for traveling is ominous.

否 東風啟戶,黔啄翻舞。各樂其類,咸得生處。

East wind blows open the gate and door, black-beaked birds fly and dance. All kinds of creatures and their kind find joy together, each finding a place to rest. This forest symbolizes the movement of spring energy and the proper dwelling of all living beings, indicating that all are in their proper places, harmonious and affectionate towards each other. Divination regarding dwelling and friendship is favorable.

同人 兩足四翼,飛入家國。寧我伯姊,與母相得。

A strange bird with two legs and four wings flew into the family home and the state. It comforted my older sister, restoring harmony between her and her mother. This forest takes the auspicious omen of a sacred bird entering the house as a sign of family harmony and reconciliation after long separation. Divination concerning family matters and marriage is favorable.

大有 歲暮花落,陽入陰室。萬物伏匿,歲不可得。

As the year comes to an end, flowers wither and the yang energy retreats into the dark. All things conceal and hide, and this year's harvest can no longer be relied upon. This forest symbolizes the closing of winter, indicating that the time has passed and desired things will not come to fruition. Divination for seeking wealth or planning affairs is unfavorable; it is best to remain quiet and wait for spring.

謙 釋然遠咎,避患高阜。田獲三狐,以貝為寶。君子所在,安寧不殆。

The person feels relieved and free from calamities, taking refuge on high ground to avoid misfortune. They hunt and catch three foxes, and also obtain valuable shells. "Field hunting and capturing three foxes" is the line statement of the second line of the ninth line in the hexagram "Jie" (Release) from the Book of Changes. This indicates that the person avoids danger and gains benefit, ensuring safety and freedom from peril. Divination regarding travel and seeking wealth is favorable.

豫 遷延卻縮,不見頭目,日以困急。

If one delays and retreats without taking action, they cannot even get a clear grasp of the situation, and their predicament becomes increasingly desperate. This indicates that the person in question is hesitant and misses opportunities, unable to decide on a course of action. Divination shows that endeavors will not succeed, and it is advisable to make a decision quickly rather than delay further.

隨 秋隼冬翔,數被嚴霜。雄犬夜鳴,家擾不寧。

The falcon remains in the sky circling during autumn and winter, repeatedly suffering from severe frost. The male dog barks wildly at night, causing disturbance and unrest at home. This forest is symbolized by a bird that arrives out of season and a dog that alarms at night, indicating external cold hardship and internal disturbance. Divination about the household suggests instability.

蠱 班馬還師,以息勞疲。役夫嘉喜,入室見妻。

The military horses return to the capital, allowing the weary soldiers to rest. Those who have been serving are happy, returning home to see their wives. "Bān mǎ" refers to the horses returning from a campaign, a phrase found in the "Zuo Zhuan." This divination indicates that the subject has completed labor, after a long separation, and asks about returning home or the completion of prolonged matters, both are auspicious.

臨 老楊日衰,條多枯枝。爵級不進,遂至摧隤。

The old elm tree is gradually declining, with most of its branches already dead. Promotion in official rank and status cannot be achieved, and it finally collapses. The Book of Changes, Great Excess, uses a withered elm to symbolize old age approaching its end. This forest indicates that the fate has declined, and the career path is stagnant. Divination regarding fame and illness both result in an ominous outcome.

觀 順風吹火,牽騎驥尾。易為功力,因懼受福。

Blowing fire with the wind, riding on the tail of a swift horse, achieving success with little effort. Because of constant vigilance and not relying on oneself, one instead receives blessings. The metaphor of "riding on the tail of a horse" is found in the "Records of the Grand Historian: The Biography of Boyi." This line indicates that the person is using external support to achieve success, showing humility and caution, thus gaining good fortune. The divination suggests a favorable outcome for those seeking advancement.

噬嗑 六人俱行,各遺其囊。黃鵠失珠,無以為明。

Six people set out together, each losing their belongings. The yellow crane loses the pearl in its mouth, and there is no more light to guide the way. The master of this forest has lost his companions and has lost all his reliance; questioning about travel and seeking wealth both indicate loss, which is ominous.

剝 依叔牆隅,志下心勞。楚王晨食,韓子低頭。

Living by the corner of his uncle's wall, he is in a low spirit and his mind is weary. The King of Chu calmly enjoys his morning meal, while the ministers of the State of Han can only bow and stand in submission. The contrast between strength and weakness is clearly evident. This situation symbolizes relying on others, indicating a position of subordination, hard work without advancement. When questioned about seeking favor or petitioning others, it suggests being subjected to委屈 and hardship.

復 三年生狗,以戌為母。荊夷上侵,姬伯出走。坤之震,需之訟,否之姤)

A dog raised for three years recognizes 'Xu' as its mother, for 'Xu' is naturally paired with the dog in the twelve branches. The southern barbarians from Jingchu advanced northward, forcing the姬 clan's feudal lords to abandon their states and flee. This forest indicates external threats and internal pressure, leading to loss of position and distant flight. Divination regarding defense of the land and holding office both result in misfortune. The same hexagram also appears with 'Kun transforming into Zhen,' 'Xu transforming into Song,' and 'Po transforming into Gou.'

旡妄 鶴盜我珠,逃於東都。鵠起追求,郭氏之墟。不見蹤跡,反為禍災。

A crane carried away my precious pearl and fled eastward to the capital; a goose took flight to pursue, following it all the way to the ruins of the Guo family. No trace could be found, yet disaster was incurred. The ruins of the Guo family are mentioned in the "Guanzi," a place where good things were not properly utilized, leading to the downfall of the state. This grove's master has lost his belongings, which are difficult to recover, and pursuit brings calamity. Divination concerning loss and disputes is ominous.

大畜 外與中退,舉事不遂。餔麋毀齒,失其道理。

External support and internal support both retreat together, so things cannot be accomplished. Eating porridge is supposed to be easy on the teeth, but it ends up damaging the teeth, showing that the method is entirely wrong. This indicates that the person has no support inside or outside, and their actions are misguided. Divination shows that plans will not succeed.

頤 鴻鵠高飛,鳴求其雌。雌來在戶,雄哺嘻嘻。甚獨勞苦,炮鱉膾鯉。

Wild geese fly high in the sky, calling out to find a mate. The female bird comes to the door, and the male bird happily brings food to feed her. Although alone it toils greatly, in the end it can cook turtle and cut carp, enjoying delicious food. This omen indicates that seeking a partner will be answered, and hard work will be rewarded. Divination regarding marriage and seeking wealth is favorable.

大過 褰衣涉河,水深漬衣。幸賴舟子,濟脫無他。觀之渙,剝之賁)

He took off his clothes and walked across the river, but the water was too deep and his clothes were completely soaked. Fortunately, he met a boatman who helped him across, thus escaping safely without any further misfortune. This indicates that the person in question faced danger but was rescued, experiencing fear without actual harm. The divination suggests that when asking about travel and danger, receiving help from others brings good fortune. The same hexagram also appears as 'Observing the Dispersal' and 'Breaking Through to Brightness'.

坎 虎齧龍指,泰山之崖。天命不佑,不見其雌。

A tiger is gnawing at the dragon's claw on the cliffside of Mount Tai. Heaven's mandate does not offer protection, and the female has never been seen. This grove uses the struggle between dragon and tiger to symbolize conflict among strong adversaries, indicating isolation and lack of assistance, with things sought not being encountered. Divination concerning marriage and undertakings is ominous.

離 明不處暗,智不履危。終年卒歲,樂以笑歌。

A wise person does not stay in darkness, and a discerning person does not venture into danger. Thus, throughout the year, they can live happily and joyfully. This forest signifies foreseeing opportunities and avoiding harm, ensuring peace throughout the year. Divination regarding personal safety and well-being is favorable.

咸 三足俱行,傾危善僵。六指不便,慁累弟兄。樹柱閡車,失其正當。車一作居)

Three legs walking together cause the center of gravity to be unbalanced, making it easy to fall; having an extra finger on the hand is actually inconvenient and even burdens the siblings. Raising a pole to block the road is an improper action. This oracle indicates that the subject has an improper physical form and faces difficulties in actions. When consulting about travel or cooperation, there are many obstacles. The character 'car' in the text is actually 'residence' in some editions.

恆 含車而徒,亡其駁牛。雖喪白頭,酒以療憂。

He has lost his cart and ox, a mixed-colored one. Although he has lost the means to rely on for his old age, he can still use wine to ease his worries. The owner of this forest has lost both his vehicle and livestock, so loss is inevitable. The worries can be temporarily eased, but divination for seeking wealth is unfavorable, and there is no great harm to himself.

遯 析薪熾酒,使媒求婦。和合齊宋,姜子悅喜。

Split firewood, warm wine, and prepare a banquet, sending a matchmaker to propose marriage. Qi and Song countries form a marital alliance, and the woman of the Jiang surname is happy to marry. The "Book of Songs" often uses "analyzing firewood" as a metaphor for marriage. This forest's matchmaker succeeds, and the two families harmonize, the divination for marriage is highly auspicious.

大壯 夜視無明,不離商賈。子反笑歡,與市為仇。

At night, unable to see any light, yet still unwilling to give up trade. Zi Fan only indulged in drinking and laughter, thus inciting resentment among the common people. The "Zuo Zhuan" records that the Chu general Zi Fan's fondness for alcohol led to national misfortune. This person is ignorant of the times, pursuing profit at the expense of cultivating resentment, and thus the divination indicates that engaging in business is unfavorable.

晉 徒行離車,□厭泥塗,利以休居。

He left his vehicle and walked on, deeply disliking the muddy road. Now it is suitable to stop and rest. The owner of this forest has a journey obstructed and should not force forward. Divination for travel is unfavorable, but remaining still brings safety.

明夷 作室山根,人以為安。一夕崩巔,破我□飧。

Building a house at the foot of a mountain, everyone thought it secure. Unbeknownst to them, the mountain peak collapsed overnight, making it impossible to even have a meal. The owner of this forest is in a dangerous place, with misfortune arising from unforeseen circumstances. Divination concerning residence and construction is ominous; one should move away as soon as possible to avoid danger.

家人 東山西山,各自言安。雖相登望,竟未同堂。

There are two mountains, one on the east and one on the west, each claiming its own stability. Although they can see each other from a distance, they cannot be together in the same hall. This omen indicates that the person involved is living apart in two places, with relatives who are close but not harmonious. It suggests that endeavors to cooperate or reunite will not succeed.

睽 君子在朝,凶言消去。驚駭逐狼,不見雄英。

A virtuous person standing in the court finds evil words and ominous speech naturally dissipating. The crowd, in fear, rushes to drive away the evil wolf, but does not see the true hero stepping forward. This forest's rightful leader, when just and in position, sees evil retreat on its own. However, when faced with affairs, there is a lack of talent. Divination of the court's situation shows it to be stable, yet there is a deficiency in selecting capable people.

蹇 □慎慎,一作□墳墳)火燒山根。不潤我鄰,獨不蒙恩。

The fire burns steadily and fiercely, spreading all the way to the foot of the mountain. This fire does not benefit my neighbors, but only my family is left without its favor. This forest brings disaster to oneself and the benefits are uneven; seeking help or favor will yield nothing. "Carefully" is also written as "furnace-like" in some versions.

解 南山之蹊,真人所遊。德配唐虞,天命為子。保佑歆享,身受大慶。復之比,否之豫)

The path in the southern mountain is where the virtuous immortals pass through. His virtue can be compared with the sage emperors Yao and Shun, who received the mandate of heaven to become emperors. The spirits protect him, accept his worship, and he himself receives great blessings and good fortune. This forest is ruled by one who possesses great virtue, holds a high position, and enjoys long-lasting blessings and honors. Divination concerning official rank and seeking blessings is very auspicious. The same phrase also appears in "Fu zhi Bi" and "Po zhi Yu."

損 龍蛇所聚,大小來處。泱泱霈霈,淡淡磕磕。使我無賴。

The place where dragons and snakes gather has all kinds of creatures coming to rest. The water is vast and turbulent, the rain is heavy and loud, the ripples shimmer, and the stones knock against each other, leaving me without a place to rely on. This forest indicates a disorderly environment with many evils converging. Divination shows that dwelling here is unstable and the mind has no direction.

益 旃裘若闔,慕德獻服。邊鄙不悚,以安王國。

The nomadic tribes wearing felt garments came to submit like closing a door, admiring the moral influence and offering ceremonial garments as tribute. The border regions no longer experienced fear, and the dynasty thus became stable. This omen indicates that distant people are loyal, the borders are peaceful, and divination regarding state affairs and long journeys is favorable.

夬 光體春成,陳倉雞鳴。陽明失道,不能自守。消亡為咎。大有之井)

The luminous body is formed in spring, and in Chen Cang, the Baoji chicken cries at midnight. The Records of the Grand Historian, in the section on rituals and divine worship, records that King Wen of Qin obtained the Chenbao, and the crowing of the chicken was considered a good omen. However, the yang energy has lost its normal course, unable to maintain itself, eventually leading to its decline and causing calamity. This indicates that the main subject begins strong but ends in decline, with the auspicious sign not being secure, and divination regarding maintaining success is unfavorable. The same wording also appears in "The Well of Great Abundance."

姤 下泉苞稂,十年無王。荀伯遇時,憂念周京。無一作九蠱之歸妹)

In a low-lying area, spring water had soaked the weeds, and for ten years there was no ruler emerging to take charge. The "Song Feng Xiaquan" poem from the "Book of Songs" laments the decline of the Zhou dynasty, and Xun Bo happened to be in the right place at the right time, worrying day and night about the capital of the Zhou dynasty. This forest indicates the disorder of the state's governance and the solitary concern of loyal ministers. When consulting about the difficult situation of the times, one's aspirations are commendable. "Wu" is sometimes written as "Jiu"; the same phrase also appears in "Gu zhi Gui Mei."

萃 仁德不暴,五精就舍。四序允釐,民安其居。

Carrying out benevolent virtue without cruelty, the refined energies of the five directions all come to rely on it. The four seasons are properly ordered, and the people live in peace and prosperity. This is consistent with the hexagram "Zhen" (Brightness), which signifies the appeal of virtue and the harmony of the seasons leading to a bountiful harvest. Divination for family and state affairs will be auspicious.

升 隋和重寶,眾所貪有。相如睨柱,趙王危殆。

The heavenly stems are Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui. The earthly branches are Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, and Hai. The trigrams are Qian (Heaven), Dui (Lake), Li (Fire), Zhen (Thunder), Xun (Wind), Kan (Water), Gen (Mountain), and Kun (Earth).

困 鳳生五雛,長於南郭。君子康寧,悅樂身榮。

The phoenix gave birth to five young birds, which were raised in the southern city. The gentleman thus became healthy and prosperous, joyful and content, residing in honor and distinction. This grove, using the image of the phoenix nurturing five young birds, symbolizes numerous descendants and a flourishing family. Divination concerning offspring and family fortune is auspicious.

井 二人為旅,俱歸北海。入門上堂,拜謁王母。勞賜我酒,女功不喜。

Two people traveled together and returned to the Northern Sea. Upon entering the hall, they paid homage to the Queen Mother, who comforted them and offered wine. However, the woman's weaving skills had not yet yielded results, which was not cause for celebration. This indicates that the master of the house encountered a nobleman during the journey, but internal affairs remained unaccomplished. The divination suggests that the journey is auspicious, but the woman's weaving skills are average.

革 逐憂除殃,洿泥生粱,下田為王。

Drive away worries and eliminate misfortunes, even good grain grows from muddy soil, and low-lying fields become the best. This omen indicates a reversal from bad to good, transformation of humble land into valuable land. If questioned about turning misfortune into blessing, land and agricultural affairs are all auspicious.

鼎 東門之墠,茹藘在阪。禮義不行,與我心反。

Outside the eastern gate, there is a flat place used for sacrifices, where the rubia grows on the slope. The poem "East Gate's Clear Ground" from the Book of Songs, originally describing the mutual longing between men and women with the moral restraints not being observed, now reflects the decline of propriety and righteousness, which entirely contradicts my feelings. This grove represents a situation where emotional desires conflict with moral standards, and wishes are not fulfilled. Divination on marriage indicates many obstacles.

震 鳧遇稻蘆,甘樂□,雖驅不去。

A wild duck meets a rice field and reed marsh, enjoying its sweetness and contentment, refusing to leave regardless of how people drive it away. This forest master finds its proper place and becomes attached, forgetting to return. When questioning about a stable residence, there is also a risk of being overly attached and unwilling to move.

艮 清人高子,久屯外野。逍遙不歸,思我君母。公子謁請,王孫嘉許。

The soldiers and general Gao Ke of Qingyi had been stationed for a long time in the open fields outside the city. They lingered by the river, unwilling to return, thinking of the king and their mothers. The poem "Qingren" from the "Book of Songs, Zheng Wind" describes exactly this situation. Later, when the公子 volunteered to take command, the Wangsun praised him. This man, who had been serving for a long time away from home, finally received a call to return. He consulted the oracle about a distant military campaign that would first be difficult and then successful.

漸 讒□所言,語不成全。虎狼之患,不為我殘。
