歸妹:不狂嫗盲,相牽北行。欲歸高邑,迷惑公得。
A madman and an old blind woman support each other as they walk northward; they originally intended to return to Gaoyi, but became lost on the way and were instead captured by the authorities. This is an omen of wandering blindly and losing the right path. Without wise guidance, one will surely become lost. It is advisable to remain still and avoid reckless action.
豐:醉臥道傍,迷且失明,不合我生。
He who gets drunk and lies prostrate by the roadside, unconscious even to the point of not seeing with his eyes, is clearly not following the path of proper conduct. This is an omen of indulgence and loss of self-control. Excessive indulgence and reckless behavior will lead to loss of the right path. One should be self-aware and self-disciplined to preserve one's body and spirit.
旅:北登鬼丘,駕龍東遊。王母御後,文武何憂。
Proceeding north to Gui Hill, then riding a dragon eastward for a tour; the Queen Mother of the West follows in a chariot behind. What could the ministers and generals have to worry about? This is an omen of divine protection and harmonious following above and below. All distant travels and missions will be safeguarded without any worries.
巽:恬淡無患,遊戲道門。與神來往,長出以安。
A tranquil and detached mind brings no calamity, allowing one to freely and leisurely enter the gate of the art of Dao. One may communicate with the divine, and through long-term entry and exit, remain safe. This is an omen of self-restraint and purity, with the divine spirits aiding and protecting. It is auspicious for self-cultivation, quiet rest, and long journeys.
兌:以緡易絲,抱布自媒。棄禮怠惰,卒罹悔憂。
Carrying a money chain to exchange for silk, and carrying cloth to propose marriage oneself, this is exactly the situation described in the "Poetry · Wei Wind · Meng"; disregarding propriety and being careless and lazy, eventually leads to regret and sorrow. This is the image of improper union and neglecting etiquette. Those who engage in marriage or trade without following the proper path will surely regret it.
渙:被服衣冠,遊戲道門。以禮相終,身無災患。
Dressed neatly in proper attire, one leisurely enters the gate of the Way; always treating others with propriety, beginning and ending well, without personal misfortune or worry. This is the image of following propriety and self-restraint. In all matters, adhering to the right path without transgression, one can ensure peace and safety.
節:大麓魚池,陸為海涯。君子失行,小人相攜。
A forest at the foot of a mountain turns into a fish pond, and land becomes the sea. The gentleman loses his established way of standing firm, while the petty person gathers together in groups. This is a sign of the world being upside down and righteousness and wickedness having exchanged places. The gentleman should withdraw and wait for the right time, and should not act recklessly.
中孚:淵泉溢出,為邑之祟。道路不通,孩子心憒。
Deep spring water overflowing has become a calamity for the city; roads are blocked by water and communication is cut off, even children are frightened and anxious. This indicates an obstruction caused by water, hindering travel and messages, and particular care should be taken to guard against water-related dangers.
小過:十里望煙,散渙四方。形體滅亡,可入深淵。終不見君。
Looking from ten li away, one sees smoke rising but it disperses and vanishes without direction; the form dissipates completely, as if sinking into a deep abyss, ultimately unable to see the person one longs for. This is an omen of broken communication and fruitless search; seeking people or things will all end in failure.
既濟:傳言相談,非好徑路。鳴鼓逐狼,不知跡處。
Relying on rumors passed from person to person is not a reliable method; beating drums to drive away wild wolves, yet not knowing where they are. This indicates the image of hearing things from the road and acting blindly, accomplishing nothing through mere hearsay. It is advisable to verify matters personally.
未濟:東失大珠,西行棄襦。時多不利,使我後起。
A large pearl was lost in the east, and while moving west, a short garment fell off; there are many unfavorable omens, causing me to start behind others. This indicates a pattern of repeated loss and damage, with neither movement nor stillness being timely. It is advisable to temporarily suspend plans and wait for a favorable opportunity.
Gou's Forest (Sixty-fourth Hexagram Gou)
姤:河伯大呼,津不可渡。往復示故,乃無大悔。
The river god shouts loudly, prohibiting passage at the ferry; after going back and forth and explaining the reasons, one can avoid major misfortune. This is an omen of water blocking the way. When encountering danger, one must stop and explain the situation; attempting to cross forcefully will result in calamity.
乾:蒙被恩澤,長大成就。柔順利貞,君臣合好。
Receiving the grace of Heaven, one is nurtured and grows to become capable; gentle and upright, it is favorable to persevere, with harmony between sovereign and minister. This is the image of receiving grace and achieving success, indicating that those in service should act with gentleness and propriety, and may expect blessings and honors.
坤:東山西土,各自止安。雖欲登望,竟不同堂。
The mountain is on the east, the earth on the west, each settling in its own place; though one wishes to ascend high and look afar to meet, they can never be together in the same hall. This is the image of being separated by distance, with a difficult time for reunion. Friends look at each other across the distance but cannot be close.
屯:登山上谷,與虎相觸。蝟為功曹,班叔奔北。脫之嘉同。
He climbed up a mountain and descended into a deep valley, facing a fierce tiger head-on; fortunately, a hedgehog acted as the "Gongcao" to mediate, allowing Ban Shu to escape northward. After escaping danger, he rejoined his companions, turning the situation into a favorable one. This is an omen of encountering danger and being saved, with a nobleman's assistance amidst peril, ultimately resulting in no major harm.
蒙:躓跌未起,失利後市。不得鹿子。
Fall down and unable to get up, missing the market and losing the opportunity; even a single young deer could not be caught. This is the omen of losing the initial advantage, acting behind others in seeking profit, and ultimately ending up with nothing.
需:結珠懷履,卓斯以思。為君奴婢。
He is standing alone, with beads tied neatly and shoes tucked in his怀, desperately thinking and missing someone. He is willing to serve as a servant for others. This is an omen of submitting oneself and lowering one's status out of deep feelings. Although the matter may succeed, his position will remain lowly.
訟:雞鳴失時,民作勞苦。犬吠不休,行者稽留。
A rooster crows too early, causing the people to labor in vain; a watchdog barks continuously, forcing travelers to delay. This indicates a disorder in the sequence of time and obstacles in travel, with delays in journeys and efforts in undertakings being laborious and yielding little success.
師:陳媯敬仲,逃興齊姜。營丘立適,八世大昌。(屯之睽,旅之豫)
The Duke of Chen, Jingzhong, fled to the state of Qi, which was of the Jiang surname, and became prosperous there. A branch of the royal family was established at Yingqiu, and by the eighth generation it had become greatly flourishing. This is an omen of moving away from danger to safety and achieving prosperity in a distant land. Those who migrate far away may look forward to establishing a foundation and having their descendants flourish. This entry is similar to the entries "Zun's Kui" and "Lu's Yu" in the same category.
比:鹿畏人匿,俱入深谷。短命不長,為虎所得。死於牙腹。
A group of deer fear humans and hide, all fleeing into a deep valley; yet their short lives lead them to be caught by a tiger and die in its mouth. This symbolizes the situation of avoiding harm but ending up in a dangerous place. Those who cannot properly discern the situation and act accordingly will inevitably face misfortune. One should carefully examine the circumstances before taking action.
小畜:言無約結,不成券契。殷叔季姬,公孫爭之。強入委禽,不悅於心,乃適子南。
Verbal agreements without a formal conclusion cannot establish a binding contract; the marriage between Yin Shu and Ji Ji was contested by the Gongsun clan, who forcibly presented the ceremonial gift of a goose for betrothal. The woman did not willingly agree, yet she eventually married Zi Nan. This illustrates the situation of an unsecured marriage leading to disputes. Anything without written evidence will inevitably lead to conflicts.
履:鼓瑟歌舞,歡悅於酒。龍喜張口,大悅在後。
Drums are beaten, zithers are played, and songs are sung to add joy, bringing happiness and ease in the banquet; the dragon also delights in opening its mouth wide, with even greater joy to come. This indicates the approach of celebration, with banquets, festivals, and joyful events following one after another, and especially abundant future blessings.
泰:凶憂災殃,日益明章。禍不可救,王卻夷傷。
Misfortune and calamity grow increasingly evident day by day; the disaster has reached a point of no return, and even the king's retreat results in injury. This is a clear omen of disaster, with the ominous sign already apparent and no way to remedy it. The only course is to retreat as early as possible.
否:水流趍下,遂成東海。求我所有,貿鱣與鯉。
Water flows to lower places, and drops accumulate until they become the East Sea; seeking what I possess to trade for the fish called zhan and li. This is an image of accumulating small things to form something great, and exchanging what is possessed for what is not. Those engaged in commerce may hope to gradually achieve great success.
同人:陰為陽賊,君不能克。舉動失常,利無所得。
Yin energy invades Yang energy, and the ruler cannot subdue it; actions lose their proper order, and no benefit is gained. This indicates the dominance of Yin evil and the ruler losing control. If actions are disordered, nothing is achieved; one should remain still and wait for the change of time.
大有:離床失案,龜喪其願。都市無會,叔季懷恨。

謙:壅遏堤防,水不得行。大慎陽光,陰霓伏藏。走歸其鄉。
Building a dike to block the watercourse, the water cannot flow through; being extremely cautious in guarding the sunlight, the dark rainbow hides itself. Thus, one rushes back to the homeland. This is the image of obstruction leading to a desire to return. When the path ahead is blocked, it is advisable to retreat to one's original place. Being cautious can avoid blame.
豫:躄屈腹伸,東乘浮雲,貴寵母前。(腹一作復)
Though limping, the body can stretch its abdomen and back, moving eastward upon floating clouds to ascend, gaining the favor of high officials and glory before one's mother. This signifies a transformation from hardship to success, beginning with difficulties and then rising to prominence, expecting to bring honor to one's family and gain a good reputation. The original text may have used the character '复' instead of '腹'.
隨:實沈參伐,以義斷割。次陸服刑,成我霸功。
The son of Gaoxin, recorded in the Zuo Zhuan, was Shishen, who governed the stars Shen and Fa, making decisions based on righteousness and cutting off wrongdoings. In order, he submitted to punishment and achieved my military achievements. This is an omen of clear judgment in punishment and reward, establishing authority through righteousness, and those who uphold justice can achieve great accomplishments.
蠱:金泉黃寶,宜與我市。娶嫁有息,利後過母。
The land of gold springs produces yellow treasures, which is most suitable for trade with me; after marriage and childbearing, future benefits will surpass the maternal family. This indicates a favorable omen for trade and treasure, as well as marriage and childbearing bringing good fortune. Both commerce and marriage will bring substantial profits.
臨:禹召諸神,會稽南山。執玉萬國,天下安寧。
Daxiu gathered all the deities from all directions to convene at the southern Mount Huiji; the princes of myriad states came with jade and silk to pay homage. Thus the world became peaceful. This is the image of gathering virtuous men, with all directions submitting to the rule. Assembling people, forming alliances, and initiating great undertakings are all auspicious.
觀:三蟲作蠱,踐跡無與。勝母盜泉,君子不處。
Three worms gathering in a vessel to form a venomous蛊 toxin indicate a path that should not be taken. A place named "Shengmu" and a spring named "Daquan" were both refused by Zengzi and Confucius to stay or drink from. This symbolizes the image of maintaining purity and keeping away from filth. Anything with an improper name or unclear origin should be avoided, and by avoiding such things, one incurs no fault.
噬嗑:花葉隕落,公歸樞宅。夷子失民,潔己不食。
The flowers and leaves both wither and fall, indicating the lord returns to his central residence. The夷子 has lost the people's support, and can only maintain personal integrity and fast to express his aspirations. This is an omen of turning from prosperity to decline, retreating and preserving purity. Those who have lost their positions should uphold their principles and not strive forcefully.
賁:履機懼毀,身王子廢。終得所欲,無有凶害。
He stands on a mechanism fearing it might collapse, his potential to become king is lost through being deposed; yet ultimately he attains what he desires without encountering misfortune. This is the image of first danger followed by safety. Being in a perilous situation yet knowing fear, he is able to transform failure into gain.
剝:道理和得,仁不相賊。君子攸往,我有利福。
The way and principles are harmonious and appropriate, and those who practice benevolence do not harm each other. When a gentleman goes somewhere, I gain benefits and good fortune. This is an omen of achieving blessings through harmony. Traveling, cooperation, and endeavors will all be smooth and successful.
復:合匏同牢,姬姜並居,壽考長久。
Splitting a gourd into two halves and sharing a single sacrifice, they performed the ancient wedding ceremony of 'drinking from the same gourd and sharing the same sacrifice'; men and women of the Ji and Jiang clans lived together shoulder to shoulder, enjoying long and prosperous lives. This signifies a harmonious couple who remain faithful until old age, with a happy marriage and enduring family prosperity.
旡妄:關雎淑女,賢妃聖偶。宜家壽母,福祿長久。
The "YaoTiao ShuNü" praised in the "Book of Songs · Zhou Nan · Guan Ju" represents a virtuous and wise wife and a wise spouse; she can bring harmony to the household, ensure the longevity of the mother, and bring lasting blessings and official rank. This is an omen of gaining the help of a virtuous wife, indicating great auspiciousness for marriage, seeking offspring, and managing the household.
大畜:騅驥脫乳,不知子處。旋踵悲鳴,痛傷我心。
A young colt of a spirited horse and a swift horse has just been weaned and is lost, the mother horse does not know where her young is. Turning on her hoof, she keeps crying out, her voice hurting my heart. This is an omen of separation between flesh and blood. Asking about lost things or searching for people will not yield results. It signifies the pain of parting.
頤:知嚴絕理,陰孽謀主。十日不食,困於申亥。
He knew the situation was harsh but cut off the usual course of action, with a cruel and wicked minister plotting to harm the sovereign. After ten days without food, he finally died of starvation in the home of Shen Hai. This is exactly the fate recorded in the "Zuo Zhuan" for King Ling of Chu. This is an omen of widespread rebellion and estrangement, leading to death from starvation. When asking about the sovereign's position or about illness and misfortune, it indicates great misfortune.
大過:鑿諸攻玉,無不宜鑿。麟鳳成形,得象君子。三人翼事,所求必喜。(人一作仁,鑿諸攻玉者,鑿其攻玉之事,無不宜。鑿者,鑿則必有也)
Using a chisel to carve a beautiful jade, there is no place that is unsuitable for carving; the qilin and phoenix gradually take shape, perfectly matching the appearance of a gentleman; there are also three people assisting from the side, ensuring that whatever is sought will certainly be fulfilled. This is an omen of shaping something into a useful form and receiving assistance in achieving one's goals; all endeavors will be realized. Old interpretations suggest that the character 'ren' (humanity) may also be used for 'ren' (person), and explain that 'carving with a chisel on jade' refers to the work of carving jade, which is suitable everywhere, and any action with a chisel will surely lead to success.
坎:昧暮乘車,以至伯家。踰梁渡河,濟脫無他。
When traveling by carriage during the dusk, one arrives at Bo's house; crossing bridges and rivers, one escapes safely without any other troubles. This is the image of successful travel at night, although one is struggling through darkness, ultimately overcoming difficulties.
離:吾有黍稷,委積外場。有角服箱,運致我藏。富於嘉糧。
I have millet and millet grains piled up in the courtyard; oxen with horns draw the cart, bringing in grain after grain into my granary. The good grain is very abundant. This is the image of harvest and storage. Those engaged in farming and seeking wealth will have real accumulations.
咸:喜笑且語,不能掩口。官爵並至,慶賀盈門。
He laughed and spoke joyfully, unable to contain his happiness; official position and titles arrived together, and people came to congratulate him, filling the courtyard. This is a sign of overlapping good news, and those seeking officialdom or reputation will surely receive great success.
恆:霧露雪霜,日暗不明。陰孽為疾,年穀大傷。
Mist, dew, snow and frost combine to cause harm, making the sun dim and unclear; yin evil qi leads to illness, and the crops of the year suffer great damage. This is an omen of yin darkness harming life, with poor harvests and many people falling ill. It is advisable to take early precautions.
遯:伯去我東,髮如飛蓬。寤寐長嘆,展轉空床。內懷悵恨,心摧肝腸。
My husband has gone eastward, leaving me behind; my hair is disheveled like a tangle of wild hemp. I sigh aloud whether asleep or awake, turning restlessly in an empty bed. My heart is full of sorrow and resentment, my liver and intestines almost broken. This is the image of parting and longing. If one asks about the return of a traveler or the status of marriage, it foretells sorrow and distress.
大壯:亡羊補牢,張氏失牛。騂駟奔走,鵠盜我魚。
A sheep was lost before the sheepfold was repaired, and the Zhang family also lost their ox. Red four-horse chariots scattered and fled, and a swan also carried off my fish. This is an omen of repeated losses, with continuous losses following one after another. Remedies after the fact are too late; it is better to reinforce the fences first.
晉:販鼠賣蛙,利少無謀,難以得家。
Selling rats and selling frogs yields meager profits with no plan, making it difficult to establish a family and career. This indicates a lowly means of livelihood and poor business skills, with gains too small to become wealthy.
明夷:西戎為秩,幽君去室。陳子發難,項伯成亂。
The Western Rong occupied the position of order, expelling King You of Zhou from the palace; Chen Shih raised an army in rebellion, and the Xiang clan eventually caused great chaos. This indicates signs of external threats and internal rebellion, leading to the collapse of the ancestral temple. When asking about state affairs or family dwellings, the omen is ominous, and one should seek to avoid disaster and seek refuge elsewhere.
家人:秋風生哀,花落心悲。公室多難,羊舌氏衰。
Autumn winds arise and evoke sorrow, with the falling of flowers stirring a sense of grief; the noble house faces many difficulties, and the Yueshi clan of Jin thus declines. This is an omen of a declining lineage being replaced, with the family's fortune waning. It is advisable to retreat and preserve oneself, avoiding ostentation and display.
睽:持福厭患,去除大殘。日長夜盡,嘉世蒙恩。

This is the image of transforming misfortune into prosperity, with disaster departing and blessings arriving. Those who seek mercy and forgiveness will have good fortune.
蹇:新受大喜,福履重來。樂且日富,足用豐財。
Recently having received great joy, blessings and wealth have come continuously; each day brings more happiness and abundance, with sufficient resources and ample wealth. This is an omen of overlapping joy. It is very auspicious for seeking wealth, receiving official salary, and forming a family.
解:前頓卻躓,左跌右逆。登高安梯,復反來歸。
Before encountering obstacles, retreating leads to further setbacks; falling on the left side, encountering difficulties on the right. When attempting to ascend, one must first secure a ladder, but then safely return. This indicates frequent hindrances in advancing and retreating. For all matters, one must prepare steps and proceed in order, thus ensuring safe movement back and forth without harm.
損:夢飯不飽,酒來入口。嬰女難好,媒應不許。
In a dream, one eats but remains hungry, with wine only brought to the mouth; a young daughter is difficult to marry off, and even when matchmakers come, they are not accepted. This is an omen of empty reputation and unfulfilled desires, with both marriage and practical benefits ultimately coming to nothing.
益:大都王市,稠人多寶。公孫宜買,資禍萬倍。(禍一作貨)
In the bustling royal market of the great city, the crowd is dense and there are many treasures; the Gongsun family is particularly suitable to purchase goods here, and their accumulated wealth can increase tenfold. 夬:兩人俱醉,相與悖戾。心乖不同,爭訟恟恟。
Two people are both drunk, being stubborn and opposing each other; their minds are apart, their opinions differ, leading to quarrels and disputes, and loud noise. This is an omen of losing harmony and causing litigation. Partners or colleagues are likely to have conflicts, so they should restrain drinking and be tolerant.
萃:身無頭足,超蹠庶乖。不能遠中,之道疲休。失利後市。
The body has neither head nor feet, yet it jumps and steps in disorder; it cannot travel far nor reach the middle, and after walking only half the way, it becomes exhausted and stops. Arriving late at the market, it misses the opportunity. This is the image of a body that is broken and strength exhausted, with actions not reaching their goal and endeavors failing.
升:三人俱行,六目光明。道逢淑女,與我驥子。
Three people travel together, six eyes clearly see; on the way they meet a virtuous woman who gives me a fine horse. This is the image of shared hearts receiving help, those traveling together meet a nobleman and gain wealth, which is very auspicious.
困:進士為官,不若復田,獲壽保年。
Seeking official positions and striving for fame and success is not as beneficial as returning to farming. One can attain longevity and preserve health by doing so. This is an omen of retreating from society to achieve peace and security. The official path is full of dangers, while those who remain simple and return to farming can preserve their lives and enjoy a long and prosperous life.
井:先易後否,失我所市。騷蘇自苦,思吾故事。
At first things went smoothly, but later there was obstruction, and I lost the business deals I had made in the market; my mind was troubled, and I caused myself worry by recalling past events. This is an omen of initial success followed by obstruction, with a change in the middle. It is advisable to maintain the existing situation rather than pursue new gains.
