This is an omen of obstruction and failure to observe clearly. If the upper authorities are blocked, the lower people suffer accordingly; it is advisable to widely open channels for speech.

家人:舉翅櫖翼,跂望南國,延頸卻縮,未有所得。

Raise its wings, spread its feathers, lift its feet to gaze afar toward the southern country; stretch its neck but then draw back, ultimately achieving nothing. This is the image of wanting to advance yet hesitating, having a plan but not daring to act, thus missing the opportunity.

睽:坎中蝦蟆,乍盈乍虛,三夕二朝,形消無餘。

A frog in a pit with stagnant water fills up and then empties again; within three nights and two days, its form completely dissipates. This represents the image of fullness and emptiness changing constantly, gaining and losing in a cycle. What is gained cannot be held long, and one must beware of quick success leading to quick failure.

蹇:僮子射御,不知所定,質疑蓍龜,孰知所避。國安土樂,宜利止居,兵蔻不至,民無騷擾。

A young boy is learning to shoot arrows and drive a chariot, yet does not know where the target is. He raises doubts and seeks clarification through divination with yarrow stalks and turtle shells, but who can know what to avoid. Fortunately, the land is peaceful and joyful, suitable for rest and settlement. There are no wars or bandits, and the people are not disturbed. This is an omen of uncertainty leading to peace. Although one may be at a loss for a time, in the end, everything will be tranquil and trouble-free.

解:陰淫寒疾,水離其室,舟楫大作,傷害黍稷。民飢於食,不無病厄。

損:離友絕朋,巧言纏匿,覆白汙玉,顏叔哀哭。

Abandoning friends and cutting off companions, using clever words to entangle and conceal the truth; turning purity upside down and defiling the jade, Yan Shu wept bitterly for this. This is an omen of slander and false accusations, where purity is tainted and close friends part ways. One should remain upright and wait for clarity to be restored.

益:童女無媒,不宜動搖,安其室廬,傅母何憂。(傅一作傍)

A young and inexperienced woman has not yet had a matchmaker to arrange her marriage, so she should not act hastily; she should remain calm and stay within her own home. What concern is there for the governess who is educating her? This is an omen of waiting in stillness for the right time. Before the right time has come, one must not act recklessly. If one remains content with one's proper role, there will be no worries. The old version sometimes uses the character "bàng" instead of "fù".

夬:作凶作患,北檄困貧,東與禍連,傷我老根。

A venture into ominous affairs leads to calamity, causing hardship and poverty in the north; in the east, it connects with misfortune, injuring the old root. This is an omen of calamity from all sides. Those who act recklessly will suffer damage to their foundation. It is advisable to remain still and avoid disturbance.

姤:東南其戶,風雨不處,曣晲仁人,父子相保。

The entrance faces southeast, allowing wind and rain to enter freely; the sky is clear and warm, with a benevolent person nearby. Father and son can protect each other. This is a favorable sign of proper orientation, living in a suitable place and encountering a benevolent person's assistance, ensuring family safety and peace.

萃:被髮獸心,難與比鄰,來如飄風,去似絕弦,為狼所殘。

A person with loose hair and a beastly heart is difficult to live with; coming like a whirlwind and going like a broken string, they eventually suffer harm from wolves. This is the omen of living with evil neighbors. Those who associate with violent people will surely suffer, and it is advisable to keep away from them.

升:天覆地載,日月運照。陰陽允作,方內四富。

Heaven covers above and Earth supports below, with the sun and moon moving and shining universally. Yin and Yang arise in accordance with the seasons, bringing prosperity to all four directions. This is the image of Heaven and Earth being properly positioned and nurturing all things. When following the proper sequence of time, all things receive their proper sustenance, which is a great auspicious omen.

井:桀亂無道,民散不聚。背室棄家,君孤出走。

In the time of Xia Jie, the ruler was corrupt and tyrannical, causing the people to scatter and not gather. People abandoned their homes and left their villages, while the ruler alone fled. This is an omen of losing the Way and having the people rebel. If governance is unkind, the people will disperse and the state will collapse.

革:申酉稷射,陰慝萌作。柯葭載牧,泥塗不白。

By the time the positions of Shen and You arrive, the grain ears have matured, and the evil influences begin to stir. Cutting reeds to use as fodder for livestock, once they are stained with mud, they cannot be cleaned again. This is an omen of good with hidden danger. During the harvest season, evil forces quietly arise, and pure individuals are easily tainted. One should be cautious in choosing company.

鼎:踝踵足傷,右指病瘍。失旅後時,利走不來。

The ankle and heel are injured, and the right fingers are afflicted with sores and ulcers. This is the omen of injured feet and missed timing. When the body is obstructed, movement is delayed, and all endeavors will ultimately come to nothing.

震:四足俱走,駑疲在後。戰既不勝,敗於東野。

Four legs run together, the weak and inferior fall behind. When battle cannot be won, they are defeated in the eastern open field. This is the image of weakness leading to defeat. When one's ability is insufficient yet insists on competing with others, it will surely result in collapse.

艮:塗行破車,丑女無媒。莫適為耦,孤困獨居。

Walking on muddy ground damaged the cart, and a woman with an ugly appearance had no matchmaker visiting her; unable to find a suitable partner, she lives alone in hardship. This is the image of being without a companion and living in solitude. Asking about marriage or companionship will not bring satisfaction.

漸:搏髀大笑,不知憂懼。開立大路,為主所召。

He slapped his thighs and laughed aloud, completely unaware of worries and fears; he opened up broad paths, thus being summoned by the sovereign for appointment. This is the image of being appointed openly and generously. Those with broad minds and open hearts are反而 recognized and summoned for appointment.

歸妹:伯圭東行,與利相逢。出既遭昧,孰不相知,憂不成凶。

Master Bo Gui is traveling east and meets with benefit; although he encounters a dark and unclear situation when he goes out, who is not familiar with each other? Worry will not lead to misfortune. This is an omen of worry without harm, travel may have some obstacles, but meeting someone will bring peace.

豐:東行賊家,鄭伯失辭。國無貞良,居受其殃。

Going east brings harm to others, and Zheng Bo thus lost his proper words; within the country there are no loyal and virtuous ministers, and all who dwell there will suffer calamity. This is an omen of losing proper speech and losing virtuous men. If the country lacks upright people, then both above and below will suffer harm.

旅:前屈後曲,形體飭急。絞黑大索,困於清室。

兌:國將有事,狐嘈向城。三日悲鳴,邑主大驚。

The state is about to experience a calamity, with foxes howling loudly towards the city; this continuous crying for three days causes the ruler of the city to be greatly alarmed. This is a sign of an ominous omen, indicating that if strange portents appear beforehand, calamities will follow. It is advisable to take precautions early.

渙:明德克敏,重華貢舉。放勳徵用,公哲蒙佑。

A person with virtue and brightness, who is diligent in his duties, is known as Zhonghua, and thus was recommended; known as Fangxun, Tangyao summoned and employed him, and the upright and wise were protected. This is the image of recommending and employing the virtuous. Those who are both virtuous and capable will certainly be recommended and promoted.

節:秋隼冬翔,數被嚴霜。甲兵充庭,萬物不生。雄父夜鳴,民大擾驚。

Eagles and hawks in autumn continue to circle through winter, repeatedly suffering from severe frost; armor and weapons fill the courtyard, preventing all things from growing. Roosters crow at night, greatly disturbing the people. This is an omen of military calamity and strange portents, with both warfare and abnormal signs appearing, leading to the people's suffering and inability to sustain life.

中孚:絲紵布帛,人所衣服。摻摻女手,紡績善織,南國饒足,取之有息。

Silk, hemp, cloth, and silk-cloth are materials used by people for making clothes. The hands of a delicate woman praised in the "Book of Songs · Wei Wind" spin thread and weave hemp, skilled in weaving. 蒙:跛躄難步,道不及舍。露宿澤陂,亡其襦褲。
