This is an omen of mother and child calling to each other, indicating family reunion and proper nurturing. When asking about the household and children, it is auspicious.
損:盲聾獨宿,莫與共食。老窮於人,病在心腹。
He is blind and deaf, living alone through the night, with no one to share his meals. In old age, he is even poorer than others, and his ailments afflict his heart and abdomen. This is the image of being isolated and sickly, with no one to support him. Asking about illness or the later years is unfavorable.
益:登木出淵,稍上升天。明德孔聖,白日載熒。寵祿再榮。
Climbing up from the depths by grasping trees, ascending step by step toward the heavens; virtue shining brightly like Confucius, radiant in the daylight; favor and salary once again becoming prominent. This is an omen of escapingpredicament and ascending to higher positions, rising from a low place to regain honor and favor.
夬:彭離濟東,遷之上庸。狼戾無節,失其寵功。
The Han Shu records that Ji Dong Wang Liu Pengli was demoted and transferred to Shangyong. He was fierce and rebellious, without restraint, thus losing his former favor and achievements. This is an omen of arrogance leading to loss of position. Those who become arrogant due to favor will surely face demotion.
姤:譖陽上舞,神明正氣。禹拜受福,君使我德。居則厚祿。(譖一作贊)
In the yang position, praise and dancing are offered, and the divine spirits descend with pure energy; Great Yu bows in reverence to receive blessings, and the sovereign enables me to carry out virtuous governance. By residing in peace and stability, one receives abundantofficial stipend. This is the image of obtaining blessings through worship and prayer. Those who respect the gods and cultivate virtue receive禄 and security. The old text may have the character 谗 written as 赞.
萃:從首至足,部分為六。室家離散,逐南乞食。
From the top of the head to the tip of the feet, the body is divided into six parts; the family is thus scattered and has to flee southward to beg for food. This is an image of fragmentation and disintegration, indicating the collapse of the family and being displaced to another place. Asking about the family home is a major凶 (misfortune).
困:民迷失道,亂我統紀。空使乾華,賓無所有。先憂後樂。
The common people have lost the right path, disturbing my laws and regulations; they have caused flowers to wither in vain and guests to leave empty-handed. It is first filled with worry and then turns into joy. This is an omen of first chaos followed by order, though it has gone through turmoil, it will ultimately return to peace.
井:刻畫為飾,毛嬙西施,求事必得。
Carefully carving and painting to embellish it, it becomes as beautiful as Mao Qiang and Xi Shi, captivating and charming. The matter sought will surely be achieved. This is the image of successful embellishment. If one is willing to put in effort to refine it, then the desired outcome will certainly be attained.
革:日居月諸,遇暗不明。長夜喪甲,絕其紀綱。
The poem "Bai Zhou" from the "Book of Songs," "Bei Feng," laments "Ri Ju Yue Zhu" — the sun and moon, yet they meet darkness and do not shine. In the long night, the armor is lost, and the laws and order are also broken. This is an image of confusion and disorder, with no wise ruler above and no established laws below, making all things unstable.
鼎:衣裳顛倒,為王來呼。成就東周,封受大侯。
The robe and lower garment were worn upside down, due to the king's urgent summons and hurried arrival, exactly as described in the "Book of Songs · Qi Wind · Eastern Light Is Not Yet Bright." Eventually, this led to the establishment of the Eastern Zhou dynasty and the granting of a great fiefdom. This is an omen of gaining honor through a hasty response to a call to duty. Although the appearance was disordered, the reward came from diligently serving the king.
震:當變立權,擿解患難。渙然冰釋,六國以寧。
Facing a crisis, one establishes temporary strategies to expose the root of the problem and resolve difficulties. Everything dissolves like ice melting and snow melting away, leading to peace among the six states. This is an omen of resolving conflicts through flexible strategies. Those who skillfully use adaptability can eliminate great calamities.
艮:西戎獯鬻,病於我國。扶陽之政,以保乾德。終無患惑。
The Western戎狄and獯鬻tribes have been a threat to our country; by implementing policies that support yang strength, we can preserve the virtue of Qian, which is strong and vigorous. In the end, there will be no calamity or confusion. This is the image of defending against external threats while maintaining righteousness. By supporting the right and eliminating the wrong, external troubles will naturally disappear.
漸:南行逐羊,子利喜亡。陰孽為病,復返其邦。
Going south to chase a sheep, intending to gain profit but the good fortune turned out to be empty; evil spirits caused illness, so one had to return to one's homeland. This is an omen of halted profit-seeking, encountering obstacles while traveling and getting sick, it is advisable to return early.
歸妹:遊戲仁德,日益有福。凶言不至,妖孽滅息。
He who dwells happily in the virtue of benevolence will see his good fortune increase day by day; evil words will not come, and strange calamities will be eliminated. This is the omen of dispelling calamities through virtue. Those who cultivate virtue and accumulate good deeds will be free from all evil influences.
豐:春日新婚,就陽日溫。嘉樂萬歲,獲福大椿。
In spring, when newlyweds celebrate their marriage and live in a place facing the sun, the days grow warmer gradually. Joy and beauty can last for ten thousand years, and the blessings received are as enduring as the great tree mentioned in the "Zhuangzi · Free and Untrammeled Excursion," which lives for eight thousand years as spring. This is an omen of a long and prosperous marriage, indicating that both marriage and celebration are auspicious, and that blessings and longevity will be long-lasting.
旅:陰昇陽伏,鬼哭其室。相飾不食,安巢如棘。
The Yin energy rises while the Yang energy retreats, and ghosts cry within the house. They are indifferent and refuse to eat, and their dwelling is like being stuck among thorns. This is an omen of excessive Yin energy causing domestic danger, with instability in residence and unease in eating. It is advisable to relocate and perform rituals to appease.
巽:臣尊主卑,權威日衰。侵奪無光,三家逐公。
The ministers and subjects are powerful while the sovereign is weak and declining in authority; the king's power is gradually diminishing. The country is being invaded and the ruler is disgraced, and finally the three great lords expel the king. This is an omen of power descending to the ministers, indicating a situation where the ruler is weak and the ministers are strong, leading inevitably to usurpation. It is advisable to take power back early and consolidate one's own position.
兌:反言為賊,戎女生患。亂吾家國,父子相賊。
Words that change from one thing to another have caused calamity; the Rong woman Li Ji has brought about disaster. She has disturbed my family and country, leading to father and son killing each other. This is the omen of a woman's words causing chaos in the family. Listening to slander and being misled leads to family members killing each other. It is advisable to discern right from wrong.
渙:迎福開戶,喜逐我後。康伯愷悌,治民以禮。
Opening the door to welcome blessings, joy follows closely behind; Kang Bo and Le Ping are gentle and easygoing, governing the people with propriety and law. This is the omen of opening the door to receive blessings. Those who are kind and harmonious in their dealings will have blessings follow them, and both governance and household affairs will be auspicious.
節:日就月將,昭明有功。靈臺觀賞,膠鼓作仁。
As mentioned in the "Book of Poetry · Zhou Songs · Jingzhi," day by day progress is made and month by month advancement occurs, virtue becomes evident and achievements are established; ascending the spiritual terrace to enjoy and appreciate, and beating the drum to promote benevolent governance. This is an image of gradual success, and those who advance day by day will surely achieve remarkable results.
中孚:百草嘉卉,萌芽將出。昆蟲扶戶,陽明所得。
A variety of wild grasses and beautiful flowers are about to break through the soil, and insects are crawling along the doorways. These are signs caused by the rising yang energy. This indicates the beginning of vitality, and when things are just starting to emerge, they should be nurtured in accordance with the right timing.
小過:天所佑助,福至禍去,君主何憂。
With heavenly protection and assistance, blessings arrive and misfortunes depart. What can the ruler still worry about? This is an omen of heavenly favor leading to good fortune. In all matters, with divine help, one can turn danger into safety.
既濟:窮夫失居,唯守舊廬。初憂中懼,終日競競。無悔無虞。
A person in poverty has lost their home and can only stay in their old house to survive; at first they are worried, then afraid, and all day they are anxious and uneasy. In the end, they have neither regret nor unexpected misfortune. This is the image of preserving oneself by holding onto the old and avoiding calamity. Someone inpredicament who knows to be cautious and careful, though their situation is difficult, will eventually be protected and remain safe.
未濟:買玉得石,失其所欲。荷蕢擊磬,隱耳無聲。
A person spends money to buy jade but ends up with a piece of worthless rock, losing what they truly desired. This is like the person carrying a basket of grass who passes by Confucius' gate, hearing the sound of a磬 but unable to clearly discern it. This represents the image of seeking something that is not matched, where one may have genuine talent but finds it difficult to meet someone who truly understands them. In such cases, transactions are easily deceived.
The Sixthty-fourth Hexagram: Obstruction (Guan)
困:席多針刺,不可以臥,動而有悔,言行俱過。
The mat is covered with needles, making it impossible to lie down; any movement brings regret, and both speech and actions go wrong. This signifies a situation like thorns, where one is caught between advancing and retreating. It is advisable to be cautious in speech and actions, and to remain still and unmoving.
乾:烏鵲食穀,張口受哺,蒙被恩德,長大成就。柔順利貞,君臣合好。
Crows and magpies peck at grain, young birds open their mouths to be fed, growing strong and mature through the nourishment they receive; gentle and upright, it is favorable to persist. The ruler and minister are in harmonious relations. This is the image of being nurtured and growing up. Those in a lower position who receive favor may hope for success.
坤:六鷁退飛,為襄敗祥,陳師合戰,右股夷傷,遂以薨崩,霸功不終。
The Spring and Autumn Annals recorded that six egrets flew backwards over the capital of the State of Song, becoming an omen of the downfall of Duke Xiang of Song; during the battle of Hong Water, his right leg was wounded, and he eventually died because of it, his hegemony never coming to a good end. This is an example of an ominous sign appearing before the event, and those who fight against the trend will suffer defeat and death.
屯:匍匐出走,驚惶悼恐,白虎王孫,蓐收在後,居中無咎。
Crawling on hands and feet to flee in great fear; the White Tiger's direction is protected by a noble master, and the Western Metal God Ruo Shou is following behind. If one remains in the central position, there will be no fault. This is the image of being startled but receiving protection, with divine support amidst panic, and staying in the center brings no calamity.
蒙:庇盧不明,使孔德妨,女孽亂國,虐政傷仁。
A dark and obscured dwelling causes confusion and obscures great virtue; a woman brings misfortune and disrupts the state, while harsh and tyrannical policies harm benevolence and righteousness. This is an omen of darkness harming virtue. Internally, there are favorites and corrupt officials, and externally, oppressive governance is practiced. Both state and family affairs cannot find peace.
需:石屬四足,不能上屋,顏氏淑德,未有爵祿。
Though a stone may have four legs, it cannot climb to the roof; Yan Hui, though possessing excellent virtue, did not receive a title or salary. This is an omen of virtue and ability not yet encountered. Though talent and virtue are good, the right time and position have not arrived, so one should remain content and wait.
訟:襄送季女,至於蕩道,齊子旦夕,留連久處。
Escort the young daughter on her wedding journey, all the way to the level main road; as the "Book of Songs · Qi Wind · Zai Qu" criticizes, the woman from the state of Qi goes back and forth day and night, lingering outside for a long time without returning. This is the image of a wedding journey delayed. Travelers will return late, and the marriage will be postponed. One should beware of idle gossip.
師:麞鹿逐牧,飽歸其居,還反次舍,樂得自如。
The deer and the elk move with the pasture to forage for food, then return to their nests when full. They go back to their original dwellings, happy and at ease. This is an omen of smoothness and fulfillment, with regular movement and adequate food, and a secure place to reside.
比:望尚阿衡,太宰周公,藩屏湯武,立為侯王。
He expects to obtain virtuous ministers like Lü Shang and Yi Yin, who was known as Aheng, and also the minister Zhou Gong, who was appointed as Taizai. They acted as barriers protecting King Tang of Shang and King Wu of Zhou, and themselves were enfeoffed as marquises. This is an omen of obtaining virtuous ministers for governance. Using virtuous ministers ensures national stability, and the ministers who assist in establishing the dynasty will be granted titles and fiefs.
小畜:開廓洪緒,王跡所基,報以八子,功得俟時。
Establishing a grand and expansive cause is the foundation of a ruler's achievements; Heaven rewards with virtuous sons like the eight ministers of the Zhou dynasty mentioned in the Analects, and success awaits the right time. This is the omen of laying a foundation and waiting for the right moment. Those who widely plant roots will see prosperity in their descendants and eventual success.
履:八會大都,饒富有餘,安民利國,可以長居。(八疑當作入)
Entering a great metropolis where four directions converge, the land is rich and abundant with resources; it is stable for the people and beneficial for the country, suitable for long-term residence. This is an omen of selecting a capital that brings advantage. It is auspicious for relocation, business, and taking up official positions. Old commentaries suspect that the character 「八」 should be 「入」.
泰:陰雲四方,日在中央,人雖昏霧,我獨昭明。
All around are dark clouds, yet the sun is shining brightly in the middle of the sky; others are in confusion while I alone have clarity. This is a sign of attaining clarity alone. While others are confused, I remain awake. When planning matters, I can expect to gain insight before others.
否:薄為災虐,風吹雲卻,欲上不得,復規其宅。
A weak object suffers calamity, and a single breeze pushes the clouds away; wanting to rise is impossible, so one can only reconsider their own dwelling. This signifies a situation of weakness leading to frustration, where upward movement is not possible, and thus it is advisable to retreat to one's original occupation.
同人:昭昭略略,非忠信客,言語反覆,以黑為白。
He who speaks clearly and briefly is not truly sincere; his words are repeated and he twists black into white. This is the image of cunning and deceit. When encountering such a person, one must not trust him deeply, and in all matters, evidence should be kept.
大有:三女為奸,俱遊高園,背室夜行,與伯笑言,禍及乃身,冤死誰禱。
Three women secretly engaged in improper deeds and went together to a high garden; they left their families at night and laughed and talked with the elder brother. Misfortune eventually fell upon themselves. After dying unjustly, to whom could they pray? This is an omen of calamity brought about by private actions. Secret and improper matters will surely bring their own misfortune.
謙:涉尸留鬼,大斧所視,文昌司過,簡公亂死。
Crossing water and seeing corpses, with lingering spirits, this is exactly where the great axe of punishment is watching; the Wen Chang star is specifically responsible for investigating mistakes, and King Jizi finally died in the turmoil of the Tian clan. This is an omen of punishment falling upon oneself, with guilt unavoidable. Asking about safety and danger indicates a major misfortune.
豫:大足長股,利出行道,困倉充盈,疏齒善市,宜錢富家,事得萬倍。
Long legs are advantageous for traveling and going out; granaries are full and teeth are even, indicating skill in trade. It is suitable for accumulating wealth and making the family prosperous. Doing business can bring a hundredfold profit. This is a favorable omen for merchants traveling far, indicating abundant sources of wealth.
隨:筐筥錡釜,可活百口,伊氏鼎俎,大福所起。
There are square baskets, round containers, and cauldrons sufficient to feed hundreds of people. Yi Yin carried the cauldron and chopping board to meet King Cheng Tang, marking the beginning of great fortune. This is an omen of achieving high status through food. Those who manage daily sustenance may thus rise to prominence.
蠱:升高登虛,欲有望侯,駕之北邑,與喜相扶。
Ascend to a high place and step onto an open area, seeking to attain a title of nobility; drive a carriage to the northern city, supported by auspicious events. This signifies an upward movement accompanied by good fortune, and those who travel in pursuit of advancement may expect to gain a position and rejoice in celebration.
臨:用彼嘉賓,政平且均,螟蟲□不作,民得安寧。
Appointing those virtuous guests and talented men, and issuing decrees that are just and equitable; pests such as the cutworms no longer proliferate, and the people enjoy peace. This is the image of governance achieved through the use of virtuous talents. When the right people are appointed, calamities do not arise and the land within the borders is secure. The original text has a single missing character here, which is temporarily marked as 「□」 for further investigation.
觀:桃夭少葉,婚悅宜家,君子樂胥,長利止居。
The peach blossoms have just begun to bloom, yet their leaves are still few, which is precisely the favorable time described in the "Book of Songs · Zhou Nan · Tao Yao" for a bride to marry and establish a harmonious home. Marriage brings joy, family harmony, and gentlemen rejoice in mutual companionship, which is beneficial for long-term stability and peaceful living. This is an auspicious sign for marriage, indicating that both marriage and settling down are favorable.
噬嗑:東行失旅,不知所處,西歸無妃,莫與笑語。
Going east but losing companions, unsure where to rest; going west to return home but without a spouse, no one to share laughter. This is the image of traveling alone without companions, going out and losing partners, staying home and being without a mate, indicating solitude and lack of achievement.
賁:玩好亂目,巧聲迷耳,賊敗貞良,君受其咎。
Precious treasures and beloved objects cloud the eyes, and skillful embellishments bewilder the ears; harming and ruining loyal and virtuous people, the sovereign will suffer this calamity. This is the image of sound and color disrupting governance; those indulging in pleasures will surely lose virtuous ministers and invite disaster.
剝:明德孔嘉,萬歲無虧,駕龍巡狩,王得安所。
The bright virtue is exceedingly beautiful and remains unimpaired for ten thousand years. Riding on a dragon chariot, the sovereign tours the world, securing a stable abode. This signifies the image of abundant virtue leading to peace and security. Those who cultivate virtue will hold firm positions and enjoy long-lasting peace without worries.
復:同本巽葉,樂仁尚德,東鄰慕義,來興吾國。
With the same root but branches smoothly connected, it delights in practicing benevolence and upholds virtue and righteousness. The eastern neighboring states admire this virtue and come to bring prosperity to my country. This is the image of virtue attracting neighboring states; by calling people with benevolence and virtue, distant people will come to attach themselves.
旡妄:戴山崔嵬,曰高無頹,軍主好德,賜以家國。
He who wears a towering mountain on his head is said to be lofty and unshakable. The leader of an army who values virtue is granted a family, a state, and a fief. This symbolizes the image of receiving a grant due to great virtue. Those who hold high positions and cultivate virtue have a firm foundation.
大畜:築室合歡,千里無患,周公萬年,佑我二人。
Building a house and sharing joy, a thousand miles without calamity; the virtue of the Duke of Zhou spreads for ten thousand years, protecting us both. This is the omen of a secure dwelling receiving blessings, ensuring safety and happiness in building a home, forming a partnership, and traveling together.
頤:養雞生雛,畜馬得駒,明堂太學,君子所居。
Raising chickens to hatch chicks, raising horses to give birth to foals; the Bright Hall and the Imperial Academy are the places where gentlemen reside and study. This represents the image of proliferation and growth. Matters concerning breeding, raising, education, and learning all experience increase and flourishing.
大過:雷行相逐,無有休息,戰於平陸,為夷所覆。
Thunder sounds keep coming one after another without a moment's rest; fighting on level ground, they are defeated by the夷 people. This is an omen of failure due to reckless advancement. Those who act hastily without choosing their ground will surely suffer defeat.
坎:委蛇循河,北至海涯,涉歷要荒,君世無他。
Winding along the river course toward the north to the sea; enduring the hardships of distant lands as described in the "Book of Documents · Yu Gong," where the territories are called the "Yao Fu" and "Huang Fu." The ruler has no other calamities in his lifetime. This is the image of a long and perilous journey that ends in peace and security.
離:鴻聲大視,高舉神化,背昧嚮明,以道福功。
The cry of the wild goose is heard from afar, its gaze reaching high, soaring high with mysterious transformations; turning away from darkness and facing the light, relying on the right path to achieve blessings and accomplishments. This is the image of abandoning darkness for brightness, and those who recognize the right time and rise high can establish great achievements.
咸:比目四翼,來安吾國,福善上堂,與我同床。
The fish swim in pairs, birds fly with four wings in unison, coming to stabilize my country; blessings and good deeds enter the hall and share my bed. This is an omen of finding a suitable partner and gaining blessings, indicating auspiciousness and intimacy in marriage, partnerships, and the household.
恆:先縠彘季,反謀桓子,不從元帥,遂行挑戰,為荊所敗。
The generals of Jin state, Xian Hu and Zhi Ji, conspired against their commander Xun Huanzi, disobeyed the orders of the supreme commander, and acted independently by launching an attack on their own. Eventually, they were defeated by Chu at the Battle of Bie. This is an omen of failure due to disobedience. Those who do not follow their superiors and act on their own will surely suffer great defeat.
遯:三頭六足,欲盜東國,顏子在邇,禍滅不成。
A monster with three heads and six legs sought to steal from the Eastern country; fortunately, a virtuous person like Yan Hui was nearby, causing the calamity to be eliminated and the plot to fail. This is an omen of a virtuous person subduing evil, where the presence of a righteous person ensures that wicked schemes collapse on their own.
大壯:緣山升木,中墮於谷,子輿失勞,黃鳥哀作。
Climbing up the mountain and onto the trees, only to fall into the valley halfway; Zi Yu exerted himself in vain, lamenting as in the poem "Song of the Yellow Bird" from the Book of Songs. This is the image of falling midway, indicating that those who strive to climb high will meet setbacks on the way, resulting in labor without reward and injury.
晉:南有嘉魚,駕黃娶鱗,魴鯉瀰瀰,利來無憂。
The poem "Nan You Jia Yu" from the Book of Songs, Small Odes, describes driving yellow chariots to marry a fish with scales; the fish, both鲂 and鲤, are abundant, and benefits come without worry. This is an omen of gaining profit through marriage, with auspiciousness for banquets, marriage, and seeking wealth.
