大有之鼎:履泥汙足,名困身辱。兩仇相得,身其為虛。
He stepped into mud and dirtied his feet, his reputation trapped and his body subjected to humiliation. Two enemies entangled with each other, yet himself becomes empty and void. This forest is凶, leading to self-ruin and mutual harm.
大有之震:安居重遷,不去其廛。禾米相聞,樂得常產。
He who remains settled in his dwelling without easily moving or leaving his home and marketplace, and who maintains a continuous supply of grain and rice, delights in preserving his established property. This is a favorable omen, indicating stability amidst disturbances, with the person remaining firm in their place without being shaken.
大有之艮:天災所遊,凶不可居。轉徙獲福,留止危憂。
In places where natural calamities occur, it is dangerous and unsuitable to stay. Moving to another place can bring good fortune, while remaining in the original place leads to danger and worries. This indicates that staying in an inappropriate place is unfavorable, and migration is advisable rather than staying put.
大有之漸:昧昧默默,不知白黑。景雲亂擾,光明隱伏。犬戎攻來,幽王失國。
Darkness and silence prevail, with confusion between black and white. Auspicious clouds are chaotic and disorderly, and brightness disappears. The Qianrong attack comes, leading to the downfall of King You of Zhou. This omen is extremely ominous, indicating a gradual loss of clarity and ultimately leading to collapse.
大有之歸妹:鳧雁啞啞,以水為宅。雌雄相和,常共娛樂。得其所欲。
Wild geese and mallards call out loudly, dwelling by the water. Male and female call in harmony, often together for pleasure, each fulfilling their desires. This forest is highly auspicious, indicating harmonious spouses and returning to a suitable place.
大有之豐:長生無極,子孫千億。柏柱載梁,堅固不傾。
Life continues endlessly, flourishing without end, with children multiplying in the thousands. The cypress pillars support the beams, strong and unyielding. This grove is highly auspicious, indicating solid foundations and abundant descendants.
大有之旅:麒麟鳳凰,善政得祥。陰陽合調,國無災殃。
When qilin and phoenix appear, it signifies the auspicious signs brought by good governance. Yin and yang are in harmony, and there are no calamities in the country. This forest is highly auspicious, indicating that virtuous policies are attracting blessings, and journeys will also be safe.
大有之巽:天之奧隅,堯舜所居。可以存身,保我室家。
In a secluded corner of heaven lies the place where Yao and Shun resided. Here one can find stability and protect one's family. This forest is highly auspicious, indicating the choice of a suitable location, and ensuring long-term peace and safety for the household.
大有之兌:配合相迎,利之四鄰。昏以為期,與福笑喜。
For a man and woman to be united in marriage, each welcoming the other, the benefits extend to the surrounding neighbors. The wedding is set at dusk, as ancient weddings were conducted during the evening; joy and celebration accompany good fortune. This is a favorable omen, indicating harmonious marriage and a household filled with joy and festivity.
大有之渙:砥德礪材,果當成周。拜受大命,封為齊侯。
Cultivating virtue and refining abilities, he indeed achieved success under the Zhou dynasty. He was entrusted with a significant mission and granted the title of Duke of Qi, referring to the case of Lü Shang being enfeoffed at Qi. This forest signifies great auspiciousness, indicating self-cultivation leading to receiving a mandate and a sudden and prominent manifestation.
大有之節:與福俱坐,畜水備火。思患豫防,終無殃禍。
Sitting with good fortune, storing water to prepare for fire danger. Thinking ahead about possible misfortunes and taking precautions, the "Yi · Ji Ji" hexagram's image says "think of possible troubles and prevent them in advance," ultimately avoiding calamity. This is Lin Dají, indicating frugality with resources, being well-prepared, and preventing problems before they occur.
大有之中:晨昏潛處,候時熙熙。卒逢白日,為世榮主。
In the morning and evening, it remains hidden and secluded, quietly waiting for the right moment, content and at ease. Eventually, it encounters a bright and clear day, becoming the ruler of great renown in this era. This is the situation of Lin Da Ji, indicating the need to cultivate and wait for the right time, and then achieve sudden success and prominence.
大有之小過:視日再光,與天相望。長生歡悅,與福為兄。
Looking at the sun shining again, facing the sky from afar. Longevity, joy, and blessings become siblings. This forest is very auspicious, indicating the return of light, and the arrival of fortune and longevity together.
大有之既濟:大頭明目,載受嘉福。三雀飛來,與祿相觸。
A person with a large head and bright eyes is destined to receive good fortune. Three birds fly in, corresponding to the official position. This forest is very auspicious, indicating that affairs will succeed and blessings will arrive, with official position following closely.
大有之未濟:梗生荊山,命屬輸班。袍衣剝脫,夏熱冬寒。立成枯槁,眾人莫憐。
The peach wood idol grows in Jing Mountain, yet its life is controlled by Gongshu Ban. The "Strategies of the Warring States" contains an analogy of a clay figure and a peach wood idol arguing with each other. Its clothing is stripped away, suffering intense heat in summer and severe cold in winter. In a short time, it withers and dies, receiving no pity. This is a great凶 (misfortune) in the forest. During the time of "Not Yet Completed," one is at the mercy of others, ultimately leading to decline.
The Forest of Humility (the 64th hexagram of Humility)
謙之謙:王喬無病,狗頭不痛。亡跛失履,之我逆從。
A hermit named Prince Qiao of the Immortal practiced cultivation and remained healthy throughout his life, even the watchdog at the gate did not feel pain; a lame person who had lost his shoes still had people coming to him respectfully. This passage begins with the tranquility and health of a sage, indicating that illness does not occur and even minor losses do not affect the whole. The person consulting the divination will receive help and find peace.
謙之乾:喋囁處曜,昧冥相待。多言少實,終無成事。
The mouth talks endlessly, yet people are in a state of uncertainty between light and darkness, watching and waiting for each other in confusion. Words are numerous but actual deeds are few, and in the end, nothing is accomplished. This situation specifically warns against empty talk and exaggerated claims. When consulting about affairs or seeking official positions, it indicates delays and lack of success.
謙之坤:北辰紫宮,衣冠中立。含和達德,常受大福。鉛刀攻玉,堅不可得。
The North Star is stationed high in the Purple Micro Palace, symbolizing the sovereign who maintains proper attire and stands upright in the correct position. Within it lies the harmonious energy and virtue that extends outward, thus constantly receiving great blessings. However, using a soft lead knife to carve a beautiful jade, the jade is hard and the knife is dull, so it can never be carved. This passage first states that those who maintain proper conduct will receive blessings, but then warns that those with limited ability cannot bear the task. Those who interpret the divination should consider their own capacity and act accordingly.
謙之屯:東壁為光,數暗不明。王母嫉妒,亂我事業。
The star Dongbi is originally the luminous mansion in charge of literature and classics, but now it is often dim and unclear. It is also disturbed by jealous dark spirits like the Queen Mother of the West, causing chaos in my career. This indicates that the person's fortune in literature and studies is obstructed by dark forces. When consulting about official rank, it suggests that the person's achievements will be hindered by women or petty people, making success difficult.
謙之蒙:下背其上,資明其讓。子嬰兩頭,陳破其墟。
Those in lower positions abandoning those in higher positions, who should support the enlightened ruler and complete the virtue of humility, instead harboring two minds; King Ziying of Qin hesitated between two courses, and when the rebel forces united, the Qin capital finally became a ruin. This indicates that the ruler and subjects are divided in heart, leading to the collapse of the foundation. The divination warns of the need to strictly guard against internal betrayal in matters of career.
謙之需:鳳生會稽,稍具能飛。翱翔桂林,與眾鳥雄。
The phoenix was born in a remote place called Kuaiji. As its wings slightly grew, it could soar high and circle above Guilin, dominating among all the birds. This passage indicates that someone who originates from a humble background will eventually achieve great success. When divining about official rank, it suggests a rise from obscurity to prominence, surpassing others in later years.
謙之訟:鑿井求玉,非卞氏寶。名困身辱,勞無所得。
Digging a well to seek a fine jade, yet what is unearthed is not the jade from Jingshan presented by Bianhe; reputation is ruined, body suffers humiliation, effort is wasted with nothing gained. This omen warns that the pursuit is not in accordance with the right path. If one seeks wealth or fame, it will result in fruitless toil and back and forth without success.
謙之師:拜傑載復,送至東萊。百僚具舉,君王嘉喜。
He presented a recommendation of a capable and outstanding person, using a carriage to bring him back, and escorted him all the way to the eastern region of Lai. All officials jointly recommended and praised him, and the king thus became happy. This indicates that the master of the forest recommends virtuous people and gets the right people, with harmony between superiors and subordinates. If one asks about seeking officialdom and taking the examination, they will certainly receive favorable acceptance.
謙之比:安息康居,異國穹廬,非吾邦域,使伯憂戚。
Anxi and Kangju are both distant countries in the Western Regions, where people live in round tent-like dwellings made of felt, not within our territory. Therefore, Bo Shi felt sorrow and grief upon being ordered to travel on a mission. This passage speaks of being sent on a distant mission to a foreign land, where the customs and climate are unsuitable, and divination for travel indicates difficulties and unrest for both host and guest.
謙之小畜:江河淮海,天之都市。商人受福,國家富有。
The Yangtze River, the Yellow River, the Huai River, and the sea are the great thoroughfares set by Heaven. Merchants rely on them to travel and gain profit and blessings, and the country thus becomes prosperous. This forest symbolizes the flow of wealth and goods. When divining about business and seeking wealth, one will gain great benefits.
謙之履:同木異葉,樂仁上德。東鄰慕義,來興吾國。
On the same tree, leaves of different shapes grow, each fulfilling its own role and rejoicing in benevolence, all upholding superior virtue. The eastern neighboring state admires such righteousness and comes to assist in the prosperity of the state. This passage speaks of using virtue to attract distant lands; when divining matters of state and human affairs, even those who are different will wish to join.
謙之泰:白鶴銜珠,夜室反明。懷我德音,身受光榮。
A white heron carries a pearl and flies in, making a dark room bright. Others remember my virtue and good words, and I myself also gain honor. This indicates that the person in question will move from darkness to clarity, with their good reputation becoming known outside. When questioning about official rank, it suggests receiving assistance from a nobleman and gaining praise.
謙之否:踐履危難,脫厄去患。入福喜門,見吾邦君。
A person who has experienced danger and hardship but manages to overcome it step by step, escaping from difficulties and eliminating troubles, will later enter a period of good fortune and happiness, and be able to meet the ruler of their country. This is the situation described by Lin, where there is first danger followed by peace. When consulted about illness, legal troubles, or official matters, it indicates that the situation will eventually turn from danger to safety and result in recognition and favor from those in authority.
謙之同人:宮商既和,聲音相隨。驪駒在門,主君以歡。
The two tones, Gong and Shang, have been harmonized, with sounds responding to each other; the song "Li Ju" for sending off guests is played at the gate, and the host is pleased. The host in this forest has harmonious affairs and a harmonious relationship with guests. Divination regarding marriage and social interactions indicates mutual affection and a favorable omen.
謙之大有:天地配享,六位光明。陰陽順序,以成厥功。
Heaven and Earth are paired and both receive offerings; the six lines each shine brightly. Yin and Yang proceed in order without competing, thus achieving their accomplishments. This forest has proper timing and position, with harmony between superior and inferior. When divining various matters, they will proceed smoothly according to reason.
謙之豫:江河淮海,天之奧府,眾利所聚,可以饒有,樂我君子。
The Yangtze River, the Yellow River, the Huai River, and the sea are the hidden treasuries of Heaven, where all kinds of benefits converge, sufficient to make people prosperous and allow the virtuous to enjoy peace and comfort. This forest signifies abundant wealth, and when consulted about seeking wealth and business ventures, one will gain substantial profits and enjoy both physical and mental well-being.
謙之隨:雙鳧俱飛,欲歸稻池。徑涉萑澤,為矢所射。傷我胸臆。
Two wild geese flew together, intending to return to their familiar rice fields and pond, but they flew straight through the reed marsh and were shot by a hidden hunter, wounded in the chest. This omen warns against greed for easy paths that lead into danger. When divining about travel or undertakings, it indicates being ambushed on the way and suffering loss.
謙之蠱:伯仲叔季,日暮寢寐。裸臥失明,喪我貝囊,銜卸道旁。
Four brothers, Bo, Zhong, Shu, and Ji, lie down and fall asleep as soon as it gets dark, naked, with all lights extinguished. The bag containing money and shells is stolen, and the empty bag is bitten and discarded by the roadside. This indicates that the person is careless and has lost property. Divination regarding travel and property suggests theft and loss.
謙之臨:受阻文祖,承率復起。以義自閒,雖苦無咎。
At the time of receiving the mandate in the temple of the ancestor, he encountered difficulties but still continued the old business, leading the people to revive it. He restrained himself with righteousness, though in hardship, he would not bring about mistakes. This forest signifies initial difficulties followed by revival. When divining about career, adhering to the right path brings no calamity.
謙之觀:旋斗運樞,順天無憂,與樂並俱。
The Big Dipper rotates, and the star Tian Shu continues its movement without ceasing. When people act in accordance with the heavenly timing, they will have no worries and will find joy accompanying them. This forest master keeps pace with the changing seasons and does not act against the natural order. When consulting about various matters, if one remains content and follows the proper time, it will be auspicious.
謙之噬嗑:周師伐紂,戰於牧野。甲子平旦,天下悅喜。
King Wu of the Zhou led his army to attack King Zhou of the Shang, and they fought a decisive battle at Muye. On the day of Jiazi, early in the morning, they achieved victory in one battle, and all people from all directions were overjoyed. This divination indicates that the ruler eliminates evil and wins the people's support, achieving success in one move. When consulting about disputes or military campaigns, those who act with integrity will surely prevail.
謙之賁:十雌百雛,常與母俱。抱雞博虎,誰敢害諸。
Ten mother hens lead hundreds of chicks, never leaving their mothers' sides; mother hens defending their young even dare to fight tigers. Who would dare harm them? This forest's master and children stay together, with strong protection. Divination about the family and descendants shows security and no worries.
謙之剝:桀蹠並處,人民愁苦。擁兵荷糧,戰於齊魯。
In the time of Xia Jie, a tyrannical ruler, and Dou Zhi, a notorious bandit, chaos reigned and the people suffered greatly. Armies from all sides gathered with provisions to fight in the area of Qi and Lu. In such a time of turmoil and warfare, if one seeks divination regarding travel, it indicates danger and one should avoid it.
謙之復:南山昊天,刺政閔身。侯悲無辜,皆憎為仇。
The Book of Poetry contains "Jie Nan Shan" which criticizes corrupt governance and "Qiao Yan" which appeals to the vast heavens, all expressing sorrow for oneself and resentment towards those in power; the feudal lords, as innocent victims, feel furious, and people hold grudges against each other. This situation arises when the chief minister governs recklessly, leading to slander and disputes. When consulting about right and wrong, the main issue is being wronged and forming enmity.
謙之無妄:百川朝海,流行不止。道雖遼遠,無不到者。
Many rivers flow towards the sea, continuously moving without stopping; although the journey is long, there is no place that cannot be reached. This forest signifies gradual accumulation leading to success, and with determination, one can achieve their goal. When asking about distant travel or endeavors, even if it takes time, eventually the destination will be reached.
謙之大畜:目不可合,憂來搖足,悚惕危懼,去其邦域。
His eyes cannot close, sorrow strikes him, and his legs shake. His heart is filled with fear and unease, so he is forced to leave his homeland. This omen indicates internal worries and external fears, leading to a forced departure. When questioning about a place to dwell, it shows instability and restlessness.
謙之頤:烏夫鵠舉,照臨東海。龍降庭堅,為陶叔後。封於蓼丘,福履綏厚。
A crow spreads its wings and a swan raises its wings high, with bright light shining upon the eastern coast of the sea; a吉祥 dragon descends with auspicious signs upon the courtyard of Tengjian, who is a descendant of Gaoyao and was granted the territory of Liao. His blessings and honors are abundant and enduring. This oracle uses the old precedent of Gaoyao's descendants being granted territories in Liao and Liu to inquire about fame and fortune and descendants, indicating that one will inherit the merits of ancestors and receive a grant of honor and abundant blessings.
謙之大過:北方多棗,橘柚所聚。荷囊載黍,盈我框#。
The northern region produces plenty of jujubes, and the southern oranges and pomelos also gather here; carrying sacks filled with millet, and my baskets are all packed full. This indicates that the landowner engages in the trade of goods from the north and south, with granaries well-stocked. When divining about wealth and harvest, it suggests abundance and surplus.
謙之坎:懸貆素食,食非其任。失望遠民,實勞我心。
In front of the hall, a raccoon dog caught by hunting is hanging, yet he himself enjoys the salary without working, which is not commensurate with his position; the people in the distant regions thus become disappointed, truly causing me great worry and anxiety. This oracle takes the meaning of "eating without working" from the poem "Fatan" in the Book of Songs, and when consulted about holding an official position and performing duties, it indicates that one's virtue does not match his rank and will attract resentment.
謙之離:羔羊皮革,君子朝服。輔政扶德,以合萬國。
The leather made from a young sheep's skin, used to make a robe, is the ceremonial garment worn by a gentleman when going to court. Wearing it assists in state affairs and upholds moral teachings, used to bring together all the states. This divination takes the meaning of frugality and integrity from the poem "Gao Yang" in the Book of Songs, and is used to inquire about official advancement. It indicates that one holds a proper position and harmonizes with others.
謙之咸:齊魯爭言,戰於龍門。構怨致禍,三歲不安。
Qi and Lu fought a battle at Longmen due to verbal disputes, leading to mutual resentment and calamity, causing unrest for three years. This forest indicates disputes leading to military conflict. When questioning about verbal disputes, it suggests prolonged difficulty in resolution, and it is advisable to resolve the conflict early.
謙之恆:久陰霖雨,塗行泥潦。商人休止,市空無有。
A prolonged period of阴 (darkness or stagnation) with continuous heavy rain has made the roads muddy and flooded. Merchants have therefore stopped traveling, leaving the market empty and devoid of goods. This indicates that the owner of the forest is experiencing blocked fortune and a disruption in livelihood. Asking about business ventures or travel suggests encountering obstacles and delays.
謙之遁:桃雀竊脂,巢於小枝。搖動不安,為風所吹。寒心悚悚,常憂殆危。
The magpie steals fat and grease, building its nest on weak branches; the nest sways with the branches, and when a strong wind comes, it is almost about to fall. The bird becomes frightened and shivers, constantly worried and anxious. This forest warns that the foundation is not solid; when seeking security through reliance, it indicates unstable roots and constant fear and unrest.
謙之大壯:防患備災,凶禍不來。雖困無災,未或安休。
By taking preventive measures against misfortunes and preparing resources for disaster relief, calamities will not come; although the situation is difficult, there is no actual misfortune, but one still cannot rest securely. This indicates that the person in question has taken effective precautions, and when questioning about safety and danger, although it may be laborious, there will be no blame. They still need to remain vigilant and cautious.
謙之晉:引頸絕糧,與母異門。不見所歡,孰與共言。
He stretches his neck waiting for food, but the grain has run out; he lives apart from his mother. Not seeing the people he loves, with whom can he speak? This omen indicates a person who is lonely, distressed, and separated from others, with no support. If one asks about the reunion of relatives, it foretells separation and sorrow.
謙之明夷:鰍蝦去海,藏於枯裡。街巷偏隘,不得自在。南北無極,渴餒成疾。
Mud eels and shrimp leave the sea and hide in dry ditches; alleys are narrow and blocked, making turning around uncomfortable; running north and south without direction, they become thirsty and hungry, eventually falling ill. This indicates that the owner of the forest has lost his original place and is trapped in difficulties, both advancing and retreating. If one asks about moving and seeking livelihood, it foretells hardship leading to illness.
謙之家人:恭寬信敏,功加四海。闢去不祥,喜來從母。
With reverence, kindness, sincerity, and diligence, these four virtues are mentioned in the "Analects of the Master" (Lunyu), and they can bring merit and achievements throughout the four seas. Unfavorable omens are dispelled, and joy accompanies the mother. This person cultivates virtue to invite blessings; when consulting about the family residence and descendants, auspiciousness arises from within.
謙之睽:歲飢無年,虐政害民。乾溪驪山,秦楚結冤。
The country suffers from famine and no grain is harvested, while harsh and cruel policies further harm the people. King Ling of Chu died in the dry stream of Qianxi, and Emperor Qin Shi Huang greatly constructed the Lishan mausoleum, causing both the states of Qin and Chu to accumulate resentment among the people. This oracle indicates that tyrannical governance brings about chaos. When consulting about state affairs and family matters, it suggests accumulated grievances between superiors and inferiors leading to upheaval.
謙之蹇:右目無瞳,偏視寡明。十步之外,不知何公。
The right eye lacks the pupil, allowing only partial vision with limited clarity; beyond ten steps, one cannot recognize which person is approaching. This indicates a narrow perspective and poor discernment in judging people. When consulting on decisions regarding personnel, it suggests being misled and causing mistakes.
謙之解:蜩螗歡喜,草木喜茂。百果蕃熾,日益庶行。
Cicadas chirp joyfully on the branches, and the grass and trees flourish vigorously; various fruits grow abundantly, day by day becoming prosperous and without obstacles. This forest signifies a harmonious season and vigorous vitality. When divining about agriculture or business, it indicates continuous daily gains and prosperity.
謙之損:常德自如,安坐無尤。幸如貴鄉,到老安榮。
By upholding constant virtue and acting with ease and composure, one remains secure even when sitting quietly without causing any misfortune. Fortune is as if one is in a place of high status, remaining peaceful and prosperous until old age. This person maintains constancy and gains blessings. When divining about one's life, it indicates a smooth and virtuous life leading to a peaceful end.
謙之益:狡兔##,良犬逐咋。雄雉受害,為鷹所獲。
A cunning rabbit dashes and jumps, while a good dog pursues and bites. Even a male pheasant cannot escape disaster and is captured by the hawk. This indicates that the master of the forest is strong and oppressive, and the hunter benefits. If one asks about their own fortune, they are controlled by a powerful person. It is advisable to avoid conflict and maintain stillness.
謙之夬:春桃生花,季女宜家。受福多年,男為封君。
In spring, peach trees bloom, which is an auspicious time for a young maiden to marry and establish a household. In the years that follow, she will enjoy long-lasting blessings, and the sons she bears will be granted titles of nobility. This forest takes its meaning from the poem "Poetry · Peach Blossom," and when consulted regarding marriage and descendants, it signifies great auspiciousness leading to enduring prosperity.
謙之姤:山石朽弊,少崩墜落。上下離心,君受其祟。
The rocks on the mountain are rotten and broken, and with a slight disturbance they will collapse and fall. The people above and below are divided in heart and purpose, and the ruler must bear this calamity. This omen indicates that the foundation is ruined, leading to downfall. When divining about the state, family, or official position, it signifies internal collapse and suffering.
