萃 三人輦車,東入旁家。主母貪饕,盜我資財。亡失犁牛。

Three people were pushing a cart eastward and entered a nearby house. The mistress of that house was greedy and insatiable, stealing my property and even taking away my oxen. This person has mistakenly entered the door of greed, losing both wealth and livestock. Divination concerning travel and entrusting things is ominous.

升 三鶴南飛,俱就塘池。蝦□饒有,利得過倍。

Three cranes flew south and landed together by the pond. The pond had an abundance of shrimp and crabs, and the profit gained was double the initial investment. This indicates that the owner of the forest has chosen a suitable location and has doubled their profit. Divination for seeking wealth is highly auspicious.

困 鷹棲茂樹,候雀往來。一擊獲兩,利在枝柯。

An eagle perches on a thick-leafed tree, quietly waiting for sparrows to pass by. With one strike, it captures two, indicating profit lies within the branches. This forest symbolizes guarding stillness and waiting for the right moment, achieving double results with one action. Divination for seeking wealth and pursuing endeavors is favorable.

井 堯舜欽明,禹稷股肱。伊尹往來,進履登堂。顯德之徒,可以輔王。

Yao and Shun were respectful and discerning, with Yu and Hou Ji as their trusted ministers. Yi Yin moved between the courts of Tang and Jie, eventually gaining an audience and being employed. Those with outstanding virtue can assist in the state's affairs. This forest indicates the meeting of a wise ruler and a virtuous minister; divination regarding seeking official positions or recommending capable individuals is highly auspicious.

革 枯旱三年,草萊不生。粢盛空乏,無以供靈。

A severe drought continued for three years, with no grass growing in the wild. The millet and foxtail millet used for worship were exhausted and insufficient, unable to offer to the spirits. This forest indicates heavenly calamities and poor harvests, with the worship offerings failing to continue. Divination regarding agriculture and praying for fortune is unfavorable.

鼎 方口圓舌,為知樞門。解釋鉤帶,商旅以歡。

A person with a square mouth and a round tongue is skilled in speech and understands the key points. They can untangle knots and resolve disputes, bringing joy to merchants. This person is good at resolving conflicts and facilitating communication, and divination concerning negotiations and business ventures is favorable.

震 鳧池水溢,高陸為海。江河橫流,魚鱉成市。千里無牆,鴛鳳遊行。

Wild ducks rest in pools that overflow, and high ground becomes a sea. Rivers burst their banks and flood widely, with fish and turtles abundant as in a market. Within a thousand li, no walls are visible, only mandarin ducks and phoenixes flying about. This forest indicates that water disasters are completely eliminated and human dwellings are gone. Divination for the household is extremely ominous, but hunting and fishing bring profit.

艮 烹魚失刀,駕車馬亡。錫刃不入,魴鯉腥臊。

He who wishes to cook fish but cannot find a knife, and desires to drive a carriage yet loses his horse, finds a tin blade dull and unable to cut through, and encounters stinky fish like鲂 and鲤 that are unfit to eat. This indicates that the person in charge lacks suitable tools and is unprepared for matters at hand. Divination concerning various affairs will not succeed.

漸 戎狄蹲踞,無禮貪饕。非吾族類,君子攸去。

The people of Rong and Di sit with their legs spread apart, do not observe propriety, and are greedy without end. The "Zuo Zhuan" states in Chenggong Four Year: "Those not of our clan have different hearts," and a gentleman should leave such a place. This forest has strange beings that are difficult to deal with, and one should leave early. Divination regarding alliances and partnerships is unfavorable.

歸妹 渡河踰水,狐濡其尾。不為禍憂,捕魚遇蟹。利得無幾。

Crossing a river or stream, the fox gets its tail wet, based on the Classic of Changes, the Book of Unfinished Affairs. Fortunately, it does not amount to a real misfortune; it is like trying to fish but catching crabs, with little gain. This person has taken risks without harm but has limited gains, so the fortune in seeking wealth is mediocre.

豐 河出小魚,不宜勞煩。苛政害民,君受其患。

The river only produces small fish, not worth the effort to pursue. Harsh government policies harm the people, and the ruler will eventually suffer the consequences. This forest indicates small gains that are not worth seeking, and harsh governance brings its own faults. Those who inquire about wealth or governance should adopt a simple and lenient approach.

旅 偃武修文,兵革休安。清人逍遙,來歸空閒。

Cease military preparations and cultivate cultural governance, so that weapons can be stored safely. Like the soldiers stationed by the river for a long time, as described in the "Poetry · Zheng Wind · Qing Ren," they return in leisure and enjoy their rest. This ruler has halted warfare and allowed the people to rest, enabling those who have served for a long time to return home. The divination indicates that both the state and distant people returning are auspicious.

巽 九疑鬱林,沮溼不中。鸞鳥易去,君子不安。

The area around Jiuyi Mountain and Yulin Prefecture is low-lying, damp, and filled with miasma, making it unsuitable for residence. Even the mythical鸾birds find it difficult to fly away easily, and thus the nobleman would naturally find no peace there. This forest is associated with ailments from water and soil, and is not a suitable place to dwell. Divination concerning migration or long journeys in this area is unfavorable.

兌 搏□逢虎,患厭不起。遂至歡國,與福笑語。君子樂喜。

Struggling with fierce beasts and encountering a tiger, calamity approaches and one is almost unable to rise. Eventually reaching a joyful state, one converses with good fortune in joy and contentment, the gentleman is happy and delighted. This oracle indicates a transition from danger to safety, from hardship to ease, and the divination shows initially ominous but ultimately auspicious outcomes.

渙 狗生龍馬,公勞嫗苦。家無筐筥,折悔為吝。

A dog giving birth to a dragon and a horse, such an unusual occurrence, brings toil to the old man and hardship to the old woman. The household has no containers for holding things, suffering loss and regret, falling into difficulty. This strange phenomenon appears in the family, leading to poverty and hardship. Divination concerning the home and livelihood is ominous.

節 嬰孩求乳,慈母歸子。黃麑悅喜,得其甘餌。

The infant needs to nurse, and the kind mother returns to the child. The young deer also becomes happy, having obtained sweet food. This forest's master shows mutual affection and kindness; whatever is sought is obtained. Divination concerning nurturing and seeking help is favorable.

中孚 有兩赤鷂,從五隼噪。操矢無筈,趣釋爾射。扶伏聽命,不敢動搖。

There are two red hawks and five falcons making a loud noise. Holding a bow but with no arrow nocked, he cannot shoot and is forced to put down the bow and arrows quickly. All the birds kneel and listen obediently, not daring to move. This forest's ruler appears strong but has no real power, controlling others through force. Divination regarding conflicts shows that they are only superficial, and it is advisable to stop rather than to act.

小過 伊尹智士,去桀耕野。執順以強,天佑無咎。

I Yin was a wise person who left King Jie of Xia and worked the fields. The "Mencius · Wan Zhang" records that he farmed in the fields of You Shen. By holding to the way of gentleness and yielding, he naturally became strong and healthy. Heaven protects him, and he has no faults. This person is leaving darkness for light, aligning with the right time to preserve himself. Divination shows that retreating is auspicious.

既濟 逐鹿山西,利入我門。陰陽和調,國無災殃。長子東遊,須其三仇。二句疑衍文)

In Shanxi chasing a herd of deer, benefits will enter my door. Yin and yang are in harmony and smooth, with no calamities in the country. The eldest son should go east for a journey, and must wait for his three suitable partners. This forest is favorable for hunting, the country is peaceful and the family secure. Divination on seeking wealth and matters concerning the state and family are all auspicious. The last two sentences are likely later additions.

未濟 龍興之德,周武成福。長女宜家,與君相德。長股遠行,狸且善藏。

A person with the virtue of a dragon rising achieves prosperity, so King Wu of Zhou attained blessings. The eldest daughter is suitable for managing the household, matching her husband's virtue. Those with long legs are good at traveling far, while creatures like the cat are good at hiding. This forest symbolizes proper alignment of virtue and position, with each thing in its proper place. Divination regarding the household and travel is favorable.

The Great Accumulation Forest (the 64th hexagram of the Great Accumulation)

大畜 朝鮮之地,姬伯所保。宜人宜家,業處子孫。求事大喜。

The land of Chosun was granted to Ji Zi by the Zhou dynasty and he held it as his territory. It is suitable for people and families, allowing for the establishment of a lasting inheritance for descendants. Matters concerning moving or settling down are highly auspicious. This forest indicates acquiring suitable land for residence, with descendants having a secure foundation. Divination regarding relocation or property acquisition is most favorable.

乾 金柱鐵關,膠固衛災。君子居之,安無憂疑。

A golden pillar and iron gate firmly guard against calamities. The gentleman residing here is secure and free from worries and fears. This forest signifies strong defense and safety both inside and outside. It is very auspicious for questioning about the household and defense.

坤 轉禍為福,喜來入屋。春城夏國,可以飲食。保全家室。

Misfortune turns into good fortune, joy enters the house. During spring and summer, the city is prosperous and abundant, allowing one to eat and drink in peace, preserving the whole family. This omen indicates that the forest owner turns danger into safety, has sufficient food and clothing, and the divination for the household is auspicious.

屯 水暴橫行,浮屋壞牆。泱泱溢溢,市師驚惶。居止不殆,與母相保。

A flood broke out and raged, sweeping away houses and damaging walls. The water was vast and overflowing, causing panic among the market and military. Fortunately, the family's residence was safe, allowing them to protect themselves and their mother. The person in question is affected externally by the flood but remains unharmed, and the divination concerning the family dwelling indicates a situation of alarm but no actual danger.

蒙 虎豹熊羆,遊戲山隅。得其所欲,君子無憂。旅人失利,市空無人。

Tigers, leopards, bears, and wild boars play in the mountain corners, each obtaining what they desire. The gentleman thus has no worries. However, travelers lose their benefits, and the market is empty and deserted. This indicates that the forest's dominant beasts are flourishing, and the trade routes are bleak. Divination for staying at home brings no worries, but divination for business ventures is unfavorable.

需 躬禮履仁,尚德止訟。宗邑已安,三伯無患。

The person personally upholds propriety, practices benevolence, values virtue and righteousness, and thus stops disputes. The clan and city have already become stable, and the three regional governors have no troubles. This forest's master uses virtue to resolve disputes, with harmony above and below. Divination on disputes being resolved shows a favorable omen.

訟 江淮易服,元黃朱飾。靈公夏徵,哀禍無極。高位崩巔,失其寵室。

In the Jianghuai region, the color of clothing was changed, using black, yellow, red, and crimson for decoration. Chen Ling Gong was killed by Xia Zhengshu because of his licentious relationship with Xia Ji. The calamity was endless, as recorded in the "Zuo Zhuan" from the tenth year of Duke Xuan. Being in a high position yet falling from above, losing the favored family. This divination indicates disorder and self-destruction due to immorality, the downfall of high status, and great misfortune for the state and family.

師 不虞之患,禍至無門。奄忽暴卒,痛傷我心。(蒙之明夷)

An unexpected calamity comes without any clear path or warning. Suddenly, a severe illness leads to death, causing me great pain. This indicates that the person in question is facing sudden misfortune and the unpredictability of life and death. Divination concerning the body and family members shows great danger. The same phrase also appears with 'Meng' and 'Mingyi', indicating further ominous signs.

比 三塗五嶽,去危入室。凶禍不作,桀盜堯服。失其寵福,貴人有疾。

Crossing over San Tu Mountain and the Five Mountains, leaving the dangerous place to enter the room. Misfortune no longer occurs, and fierce people like Jie or thieves put on the clothing of Yao and become civilized. However, the former favor and blessings are lost, and the Nobleman still suffers from illness. This divination indicates avoiding danger and gaining security but with some loss of blessings. The question about personal safety is favorable but with a reduction in fortune.

小畜 配合相迎,利之四鄉。昏以為期,明星煌煌。欣喜奭懌,所言得償。

A man and a woman are matched and each goes to meet the other. It is advantageous to go to any village in any direction. They agree to meet at sunset, when the bright star of dawn shines brightly. The Book of Poetry, Odes of Chen, East Gate Willow, says, "The bright star shines brightly." They are joyful and happy, and whatever they say comes true. This person is the master of marriage, and their vows are kept. Divination concerning marriage and making promises is favorable.

履 三首六身,莫適所閒。更伏搖動,動失事便。箕子佯狂,國乃不昌。

A monster with three heads and six bodies has no place to rest comfortably. It sometimes lies still and sometimes moves suddenly, and once it moves, it loses its advantage. Ji Zi had to pretend to be mad to avoid calamity, and the country thus could not flourish. This omen indicates that the ruler is abnormal, the virtuous retreat, and divination regarding state affairs and undertakings is unfavorable.

泰 虎臥山隅,鹿過後胊。弓矢設張,蝟為功曹。伏不敢起,遂全其軀。得我羙章之。(大有之訟)

A tiger lies at the mountain corner, a deer passes by behind it. The bow and arrow are drawn and ready to shoot, while a hedgehog curls up and acts as a minor official. It lies low and does not rise, thus preserving its body and obtaining my fine appearance. This indicates that the forest master is hiding and avoiding misfortune, remaining quiet to preserve safety. The divination suggests that it is favorable to conceal oneself and not to act recklessly, resulting in good fortune. The same phrase also appears in 'Great Gain' and 'Contention'.

否 麟鳳執獲,英雄失職。自衛反魯,畏昧不起。福祿訖己。(畏一作晦)

A qilin and a phoenix were captured, and heroes lost their positions. Confucius returned to Lu from his self-defense, fearing to go out because the times were dark. In the "Analects of Confucius · Zihan," there is a lamentation about "the phoenix not coming." Blessings and honors have been cut off. This person is a virtuous one who is trapped, with their fate nearing an end. Divination regarding official career and family fortune is unfavorable. "Wèi" is also written as "huì" in some versions.

同人 欒子作殃,伯氏誅傷。州犁奔楚,失其寵光。

The Jin state's Luan clan rose to power and caused trouble, leading to the execution of Bo Zong's entire family. Bo Zong's son, Bo Zhou Li, fled to the Chu state and lost his former honor and prestige, as recorded in the "Zuo Zhuan" from the Chenggong fifteenth year. This case involves a dominant minister causing calamity and a virtuous minister fleeing, indicating misfortune for both the state and one's career.

大有 黃帝出遊,駕龍乘馬。東至泰山,南過齊魯。王良御右,文武何咎。不利市賈。

The Yellow Emperor went on a journey, riding a dragon and a horse. He traveled east to Mount Tai and south through the states of Qi and Lu. The skilled driver Wang Liang controlled the chariot on the right, and the ministers and officials were well-disciplined, with no mistakes. However, it was unfavorable for market transactions. This forest's owner is prosperous in travel, with capable attendants. The divination indicates good fortune for long journeys but ill fortune for business dealings.

謙 齊魯爭言,戰於龍門。構怨致禍,三世不安。

Qi and Lu could not reach an agreement and fought at Longmen. They incurred enmity and brought about calamity, with three generations unable to find peace. This indicates that disputes and mutual hostility will lead to great misfortune, with conflicts arising from words and calamity extending to future generations.

豫 道禮和德,仁不相賊。君子往之,樂有其利。

Pursuing propriety and righteousness, harmonizing virtue, and maintaining benevolence so that people do not harm each other. A gentleman going to such a place will find joy and gain benefit. This forest indicates a place with refined customs, and going there brings profit. Divination concerning travel and association is favorable.

隨 嫗妒公姥,毀益亂類。使我家憤,利不得遂。

An old woman is jealous of her mother-in-law and spreads more slander, causing more chaos. This has made my whole family resentful and uneasy, and the benefits cannot be obtained. This indicates that the household is in discord within the inner circle, and family affairs are in disorder. Divination for the home and seeking wealth are both unfavorable.

蠱 一巢九子,同公共母。柔順利貞,君子不殆。福祿所在。

A nest contains nine young birds, all with the same father and mother; the poem "Qie Chao" from the "Book of Songs," "Zhao Nan," uses the nest as a metaphor for a family home. Being gentle and upright brings benefit, so the gentleman has no danger, and blessings are present. This divination indicates harmony within the family, many descendants, and great auspiciousness when questioning family matters.

臨 崔嵬北嶽,天神貴客。溫仁正直,主布恩德。閔哀不已,蒙受大福。

The lofty northern mountain, Hengshan, is the dwelling place of heavenly spirits and honored guests. A person with a warm and kind nature, upright and free from evil, is the one who spreads benevolence and virtue. His compassion never ceases, thus he receives great blessings. This forest is the place for honoring gods and cultivating virtue, and heaven bestows its grace. Divination concerning praying for fortune and seeking favor is favorable.

觀 三蛆逐蠅,陷墮釜中。灌沸淹殪,與母長訣。

Three maggots chased a fly and fell into a pot. When boiling water was poured in, they were scalded to death and submerged, thus forever parting from their mother. This indicates that the person in question pursued small profits and fell into a deadly situation; questioning matters of greed brings great misfortune.

噬嗑 東山西陵,高峻難升。滅夷掘壘,使道不通。商旅無功,復反其邦。

Mountains to the east and hills to the west are high and steep, difficult to climb. The terrain has been levelled and fortifications dug through, blocking the passage. Merchants gain nothing and return to their homeland. This omen indicates blocked roads and unsuccessful endeavors. Divination for travel and seeking wealth is unfavorable.

賁 常德自如,不逢禍殃,福祿自來。

Constant virtue is maintained effortlessly, without encountering misfortune; blessings and honors come naturally. This omen indicates that the subject maintains a steady and fortunate state, attaining what is desired without seeking it, and all matters consulted are safe and auspicious.

剝 范子妙材,戮辱傷膚。後相秦國,封為應侯。

Fan Ju had outstanding abilities. Earlier, he suffered severe punishment and was almost killed, with his body severely injured. Later, he became the chancellor of the state of Qin and was granted the title of Ying Hou. This is recorded in the "Records of the Grand Historian: The Biographies of Fan Ju and Cai Ze." This person first endured humiliation and then achieved prominence, overcoming hardship to succeed. The divination indicates that the initial phase will be ominous, but eventually it will turn to auspiciousness.

復 狼虎結謀,相聚為儔。同齧牛羊,道絕不通。病我商人。

A wolf and a tiger conspired together, forming a gang. They attacked cattle and sheep together, causing the road to become blocked and impassable, harming my trading caravan. The forest lord gathers evil creatures as allies; the trade route is obstructed. Divination for travel and commerce both indicate bad omens.

旡妄 不宜杜公,與我爭訟。媒伯無禮,自令塞壅。

It was not meant to associate with a person of Du Gong's kind, yet he has started a dispute with me. The matchmaker acted improperly and caused obstruction. This indicates that the person in question has associated with unsuitable people and that the marriage has led to litigation. Both the inquiry about disputes and marriage are unfavorable.

頤 上天樓臺,登拜受福,喜慶大來。

Ascend to a lofty platform reaching to heaven, perform rituals to pay homage and receive blessings, with great joy and prosperity coming in abundance. This forest's master ascends high to receive blessings, with auspiciousness filling the door. Divination for seeking blessings and promotion is highly favorable.

大過 三羊上山,東至平康。黃龍服箱,南至魯陽。完其佩囊,執綏車中。行人有慶。

Three sheep are climbing a mountain, heading east to a place of peace and prosperity. A yellow dragon is leading the carriage ahead, heading south to Luyang. The pouch is intact, and the person inside the carriage is holding the strap used to climb onto the vehicle. The traveler will have good fortune. This omen indicates a smooth journey, no loss of belongings, and a favorable omen for travel.

坎 天地閉塞,仁智隱伏。商旅不行,利深難得。

Heaven and earth are closed and uncommunicating, and the benevolent and wise remain hidden and do not emerge. This is based on the Classic of Changes, the Book of Earth (Kun), which says, "Heaven and earth are closed, and the virtuous retreat." Commerce comes to a halt, and hidden benefits are difficult to obtain. This indicates that the time is blocked, the virtuous should remain hidden, and divination concerning seeking wealth or entering officialdom is unfavorable.

離 延陵適魯,觀樂太史。車轔白顛,知秦興起。卒兼其國,一統為主。

Yanling Jizi went on a mission to Lu and asked the historian to perform music from the various states. When he heard the song from the Qin state describing the sound of chariots and white-horned horses, he concluded that the state of Qin would rise to power. This event is recorded in the Zuo Zhuan, Volume 29, where Jizi observed the music. Eventually, Qin conquered all the other states and unified the country. This demonstrates the ability to foresee great trends from small signs, indicating that the inquiry about distant plans is auspicious.

咸 櫜戢甲兵,歸放馬牛。徑路開通,國無凶憂。一下有朽牆難鑿,疾病難治。

Store the armor and weapons in a leather bag and return the horses and cattle to the wild. The Classic of Poetry, Zhou Songs, Shi Mai, says, "Carry the bows and arrows in a bag." The roads are unobstructed and there is no danger or trouble within the country. This indicates that the ruler has ceased warfare and returned to agriculture, bringing peace to the world. Divination regarding state affairs and travel is favorable. Below this passage there is another line reading, "Decaying walls are hard to bore through, and diseases are hard to cure."

恆 牛驥同堂,郭氏以亡。國破為壚,君奔走趍。

A plow ox and a fine horse share the same stable, unable to distinguish between the virtuous and the foolish, leading to the downfall of the Guo family. The "Guanzi" records that the Duke of Guo was good at recognizing virtue but failed to employ it, and good at recognizing evil but failed to remove it, eventually leading to the destruction of his state. After the country fell, it became a wasteland, and the king fled in panic. This lord of the forest is incompetent in selecting people, resulting in the loss of his country and position, indicating a great misfortune for the state and family.

遯 大尾小腰,重不可搖。棟撓壤壞,臣為君憂。湯火之言,消不為患,使我復安。

The tail is large and the waist is thin, heavy and unable to move. The roof beam is bent, the walls are collapsing, and the ministers worry for the sovereign. The phrase "the beam is bent" comes from the Book of Changes, the Great Exceeding. Those dangerous words, like hot water, have finally eased and not caused harm, allowing me to return to peace. This person faced the danger of a large tail that is difficult to control, but ultimately it was resolved. The divination indicates first worry and then peace.

大壯 太乙置酒,樂正起舞。萬福攸同,可以安處。保我齯齒。一下有暗空無餌,不利為旅。

The Supreme God Taiyi set a banquet, and the Music Master performed in harmony with the seasons. All blessings gathered together, allowing people to live in peace and enjoy long life. This forest's guardian deity descended, bringing blessings of longevity and health. Divination concerning the household and the body is favorable. Below this passage is the line: "The dark sky has no bait, not favorable for traveling."

晉 飲酒醉酗,跳起爭鬥。伯傷叔僵,東家治喪。

After drinking heavily and getting drunk, he started a drunken fit, jumped up and fought. The elder brother was injured and the uncle died. At the same time, the neighbor to the east was holding a funeral. This man's behavior was immoral after drinking, leading to a fight that caused disaster. Divination shows that both feasting and fighting are ominous.

明夷 陵險難登,澗中多石。車馳□擊,重載傷軸。擔負善躓,跌踒右足。

The mountain paths are steep and difficult to climb, with many scattered rocks in the ravines. The cart moves quickly but keeps bumping, and the heavy load breaks the axle. Those carrying burdens keep tripping and twisting their right ankles. This omen indicates that the road is dangerous and the load is heavy, leading to injury when traveling. Divination concerning travel and carrying heavy loads is unfavorable.

家人 爭訟不已,更相諮詢。張李弱口,被髮北走。一下有耳順從心,躬行至仁。不須以兵,天下太平。

There is an ongoing dispute with both parties repeatedly appealing to different authorities. The Zhang and Li families are both timid in speech and have no choice but to flee north with their hair loose. The owner of this forest is involved in a prolonged lawsuit and is defeated due to being in the wrong, indicating unfavorable legal outcomes. Below this there is a verse: "Hearing with contentment, acting with utmost benevolence. No need for military force, the world will be at peace."

睽 心志無良,傷破妄行。觸牆抵壁,不見戶房。先王閉關,商旅委棄。

The mind is not upright, and reckless actions lead to injury and ruin. Colliding here and there, only walls are encountered, and no door or house can be found. According to ancient customs, on the winter solstice, the ancients closed their gates and did not travel, as mentioned in the Great Image of the Hexagram "Return" from the Book of Changes. Therefore, commercial activities must be suspended. This indicates that the person in question has a wrong path, blocked channels, and both movement and stillness are halted. Divination regarding travel and commerce is unfavorable.

蹇 鸋鴂鴟鴞,治成御災。綏德安家,周公勤勞。
