Volume Five, Part Two continues with the method of "using the cycle to govern the world." "The 184th cycle of the heavenly stem and earthly branch" is the first 184th cycle of the original cycle, spanning from 1137 BCE to 778 BCE, covering the 2197th to the 228th generations; the fall of the Shang dynasty and the entire Western Zhou dynasty are included in this cycle. The 2197th generation corresponds to the period from 1137 BCE to 1108 BCE. The year Jiazi, which is 1137 BCE, was the eighteenth year of King Zhou of Shang, who was known as Shang Jia. In this year, King Wen of Zhou, the Western Duke, attacked the state of Chou Hou Hu, and later moved the capital from below Mount Qi to Feng. The year Yichou, which is 1136 BCE, saw King Wen of Zhou attack the state of Misi. The year Bingyin, which is 1135 BCE, saw King Wen of Zhou conquer the state of Li, and his forces approached the capital of Yin, causing fear among the Shang people. The event is recorded in the Book of Documents, "King Wen of Zhou Conquers Li." The year Dingmao, which is 1134 BCE, saw King Wen of Zhou attack the state of Yu. The year Wuchen, which is 1133 BCE, had no significant events. By this time, the situation for the Zhou people to overthrow the Shang had already taken shape.

The year Jisi (己巳) was 1132 BCE, when King Wen of Zhou died at the age of ninety-seven. His eldest son Ji Fa succeeded him and became King Wu of Zhou. King Wen was buried in Bi Original. From Gengwu (庚午) to Guiyou (癸酉), and from Jiaxu (甲戌) to Bingzi (丙子), there were seven years of peace. In the year Dingchou (丁丑), which was 1124 BCE, King Wu traveled east to Mengjin to gather the feudal lords and inspect his army, testing the support of the people, an event known as "Mengjin military review." In the year Wuyin (戊寅), which was 1123 BCE, King Zhou Shang killed the Grand Tutor Bi Gan, imprisoned Ji Zi, and Wei Zi fled with the ancestral temple vessels to the Zhou state, leading to the complete collapse of the Shang dynasty. In the year Jimao (己卯), which was 1122 BCE, Lü Shang (Jiang Taigong) assisted King Wu in raising an army to attack the Shang. The army crossed Mengjin and formed an array near the capital of Shang, defeating the Shang army at Muyi, killing King Zhou, and establishing Zhou's son Wugeng as the successor of Yin to honor the former kings. Then King Wu returned to his capital. King Wu established his rule in Feng, facing south to receive the homage of the feudal lords, and issued the Great Edict to the world. He changed the first month of the year to the eleventh lunar month, and renamed the term for recording years from "si" to "nian," renewing the state together with the people. In the year Gengchen (庚辰), which was 1121 BCE, King Wu ordered Guan Shu, Cai Shu, and Huo Shu to govern Bei, Yong, and Wei respectively, to monitor Wugeng, known as the "Three Supervisors." From Xinsi (辛巳) to Guiwei (癸未), and Jia Shen (甲申), there were four years of peace.

The year Yiyou corresponds to 1116 BCE, when King Wu of Zhou died, and his eldest son Ji Shu succeeded to the throne, becoming King Cheng of Zhou. Duke Zhou Gong served as the Grand Tutor, and Duke Zhao Gong Shi served as the Grand Guardian. The two officials divided their rule between the east and west of the river Shaan, accepting King Wu's final instructions, and led the feudal lords to assist the royal house on both sides. King Wu was buried at Bi Original. The year Bingxu corresponds to 1115 BCE, when the Three Supervisors joined Wu Geng and the Huaiyi tribes in rebellion. Duke Zhou personally led an eastern campaign and issued the Great诰 to the world. The "Great诰" in the Book of Documents is this text. The year Dinghai had no significant events. The year Wuzi corresponds to 1113 BCE, when the rebellion of the Three Supervisors was quelled. Duke Zhou revoked the heavenly mandate of the Shang dynasty, executed Wu Geng, and reformed the Shang lineage. He granted Wei Zi Qi, the younger brother of King Zhou, the fief of Song to continue the Shang ancestral line; he granted Kang Shu the fief of Wei to pacify the remnants of the Shang people; he granted Ji Zi the fief of Gao Li (Korea); he executed Guan Shu in the Shang territory; he imprisoned Cai Shu in Guo Lin; he demoted Ho Shu to commoner status, removing him from the royal lineage. He also launched an eastern campaign against the Huaiyi tribes. Duke Bo Qin of Lu took the oath at Fei to suppress the Huaiyi tribes, and the Huaiyi were pacified. Then he attacked and destroyed the state of Yan. The distant people of Sushen came to pay homage. The year Jichou had no significant events. Shao Gong and Bi Gong accepted his final instructions and assisted his eldest son Ji Zhao in ascending the throne, who became King Kang of Zhou. The year Guihai, which was 1078 BCE, was the first year of King Kang's reign. King Kang appointed Bi Gong to replace Jun Chen in rectifying the affairs of the eastern suburbs of Chengzhou, as recorded in the Book of Documents, the "Bi Ming." During the period of King Cheng and King Kang, there were forty years without the use of punishment, making it the most prosperous time of the Western Zhou dynasty.

From Yichou to Guiyou, Jiaxu to Guiwei, and Jiashen to Dinghai, a total of twenty-three years were peaceful, reflecting the prosperity of "Kang's Reign" when the world was at peace. The year Wuzi, 1053 BCE, marked the death of King Kang of Zhou, and his son Ji Xia succeeded him, becoming King Zhao of Zhou. From Jichou to Guisi, five years were peaceful.

The following nine years from Yi Wei (乙未) to Gui Mao (癸卯), ten years from Jia Chen (甲辰) to Gui Chou (癸丑), and another ten years from Jia Yin (甲寅) to Gui Hai (癸亥) make up thirty years of the sexagenary cycle with no recorded events. The 2201st generation belongs to the辰 (Chen) era, spanning from 1017 to 988 BCE. The ten years from Jia Zi (甲子) to Gui You (癸酉) and five years from Jia Xu (甲戌) to Wu Yin (戊寅) total fifteen years with no recorded events. The year Ji Mao (己卯), which was 1002 BCE, marked King Zhao of Zhou's southern tour to the territory of Chu. While crossing the Han River, the ship he was on broke apart and sank, and he did not return. The six divisions of his army were also lost. His son Ji Man succeeded to the throne, becoming King Mu of Zhou. The loss of the army in the southern lands marked the first crack in the decline of the Western Zhou dynasty. The Zhou people concealed this event, so the record only states "the southern tour did not return," without mentioning where he died. The years from Geng Chen (庚辰) to Gui Wei (癸未) span four years, and from Jia Shen (甲申) to Gui Si (癸巳) span ten years, totaling fourteen years with no recorded events.

The following nine years from Yiwu (乙未) to Guimao (癸卯), ten years from Jichen (甲辰) to Guichou (癸丑), and ten years from Jiayin (甲寅) to Guihai (癸亥), totaling thirty years, only recorded the heavenly stems and earthly branches without any events. There are accounts of King Mu's western campaign against the Qiong Rong, his commissioning of Lü Hou to compile the "Lü Criminal Code," and his travels across the land, but these are not included in this table, showing Shao Yong's strict selection of events. The next second thousand two hundred and third generation belongs to the午 (Wu) era, spanning from 957 to 928 BCE. The year Jiazi (甲子), which was 957 BCE, was the forty-fifth year of King Mu's reign. In the year Xinhai, which was 910 BCE, King Yi Wang of the Zhou dynasty died. His son did not succeed him; instead, his son-in-law, Prince Pifang, son of King Mu, ascended the throne as King Xiao Wang. This marked the first time the throne of the Western Zhou dynasty was not passed down from father to son. From Renzi to Guihai, twelve years were peaceful. The next generation, the 225th, belongs to the Shen era, spanning from 897 to 868 BCE. The year Jiazi, which was 897 BCE, was the thirteenth year of King Xiao Wang's reign. The year Bingyin, which was 895 BCE, saw the death of King Xiao Wang, and the throne was restored to Prince Ji Xie, son of King Yi, who became King Yi Wang. The text here specially notes, "From this point, the Zhou dynasty began to decline," marking the beginning of the decline of the Western Zhou dynasty. King Yi Wang once went down to meet the feudal lords and had the Duke of Qi, Ai Gong, executed. The authority of the royal house was greatly weakened. From Dingmao to Guiyou, and from Jiaxu to Xinsi, a total of fifteen years were peaceful. The year Renwu, which was 879 BCE, saw the death of King Yi Wang. From Yiwei to Guimao, and from Jiachen to Renzi, a total of eighteen years were peaceful. The year Guichou, which corresponds to 848 BCE, saw King Li of Zhou coveting wealth and appointing Rong Yigong, who loved accumulating riches, as his chief minister. He took all the revenues from mountains, forests, rivers, and lakes and made them belong to the royal family. The people were resentful. In the year Bingchen, which corresponds to 845 BCE, King Li executed those who gave him advice, considering them as slandering him. He also sent Wei Wu to spy on the people. Thus, "the people dared not speak, and they looked at each other with their eyes." In the year Jiwei, which corresponds to 842 BCE, the people of the capital rose up to expel King Li of Zhou, who fled to Zhi. After that, Duke of Zhou and Zhao Gong, both senior ministers, jointly ruled the country, an era known as "the Republic." The first year of the Republic, 841 BCE, marks the first definite chronological record in Chinese annals. Crown Prince Ji Jing was hidden in Zhao Gong's house and thus survived. This table asserts that "the virtue of Wen and Wu has now been exhausted," implying that the virtue accumulated by King Wen and King Wu had been used up by this year. From Gengshen to Guihai, four years were peaceful.

From Yichou to Renshen, there were eight years of inaction. The Guiyou year, 828 BCE, saw the death of King Li of Zhou at Zhì, and the two elder ministers, Zhou Gong and Zhao Gong, supported Prince Ji Jing to ascend the throne, who became King Xuan of Zhou. King Xuan was assisted by virtuous ministers such as Zhongshanfu, Yijingfu, Fangshu, and Shenbo, who greatly restored the achievements of King Wen and King Wu, an era known as the "Xuanwang Zhongxìng" or "Middle Revival of King Xuan." The Jiaxu year, 827 BCE, was when King Xuan launched a northern campaign against the Xianyun, advancing as far as Taiyuan, with Yijingfu as the main general. The poem "Liyue" in the Book of Songs describes this campaign. The Yihai year, 826 BCE, was when King Xuan conducted a southern campaign against the Jingman, with Fangshu as the main general, and the poem "Caiyi" in the Book of Songs refers to this campaign. From Bingzi to Guimi and from Jiashen to Guisi, there were eighteen years of inaction.

In the year Yisi, 796 BCE, King Xuan launched an army to attack Lu State, interfering in its succession and establishing Duke Xiaogong of Lu. From then on, the feudal lords began to disregard the king's orders. In the year Renzi, 789 BCE, King Xuan attacked the Jiang Rong, suffering a great defeat at the Battle of Qianmu, losing even the armies of the southern states. In the year Guichou, 788 BCE, King Xuan conducted a census in Taiyuan to replenish his military forces, but Zhongshanfu advised against it and was ignored, thus ending the momentum of revival. From Jiayin to Wuwu, five years passed without significant events. In the year Jiwei, 782 BCE, King Xuan died, and his son Ji Shen succeeded him, becoming King You of Zhou. In the years Gengshen and Xinyou, there were no significant events. In the year Renxu, 779 BCE, King You began to favor Bao Si, planting the seeds of the downfall of the Western Zhou. The original title of this section is "以经运世六", but following the conventions of the preceding sections, it should be "以运经世六". "经运之戊一百八十五" refers to the 185th cycle of the system, which corresponds to the period from 777 BCE to 418 BCE, encompassing the 2292nd to the 2220th generations. The fall of the Western Zhou, the establishment of the Eastern Zhou, and the entire Spring and Autumn period all occurred within this cycle. The 2292nd generation corresponds to the years 777 BCE to 748 BCE. The year Jiazi, which is 777 BCE, marks the fifth year of King You of Zhou's reign. In this year, King You废黜了Shen Hou and Prince Yi Jiu, and instead appointed Bao Si as the queen and Bo Fu as the crown prince. He also appointed Guo Shi Fu, who was adept at flattery, as the minister. From the year Yi Chou to Jisi, there were no significant events. The year Geng Wu, which is 771 BCE, saw Shen Hou's father, Shen Hou, lead the Qian Rong tribes to invade, defeating King You and killing him at Li Mountain, thus marking the end of the Western Zhou. The states of Jin and Qin, along with the kings of Zheng and Wei, drove out the Qian Rong tribes and installed Prince Yi Jiu as the new king, who became King Ping of Zhou. King Ping moved the capital of the Zhou dynasty eastward to Luoyi, and thus the Zhou dynasty was known as the Eastern Zhou. The year Xin Wei, which is 770 BCE, saw King Ping bestow titles upon Jin Wen Hou and Qin Xiang Gong, granting the western part of the Qishan Mountains to Qin and the area around the He River to Jin. The year Ren Shen, which is 769 BCE, saw Qin establish the Xizhou Temple to worship the White Emperor; Duke Hui of Lu ascended the throne. The year Yi Hai, which is 766 BCE, saw Duke Wen Gong of Qin ascend the throne. The year Ji Mao, which is 762 BCE, saw the Qin people move eastward, settling between the Qian River and the Wei River. The year Gui Wei, which is 758 BCE, saw Duke Zhuang Gong of Wei ascend the throne. The year Yi You, which is 756 BCE, saw Qin construct the Fuzhou Temple. The year Yiwei, 746 BCE, was the year when Duke Zhao of Jin ascended the throne. The year Bingshen, 745 BCE, was when Duke Zhao of Jin enfeoffed his uncle Chengshi at Quwo. Quwo was larger than the capital of Jin, Yixian, and thus the sixty-seven year civil war in Jin began. The year Dingyou, 744 BCE, was the year when Duke Zhuang of Zheng ascended the throne. The year Wuxu, 743 BCE, was when Duke Zhuang of Zheng enfeoffed his younger brother Gongshu Duan at Jingcheng. The incident described in the opening of the "Zuo Zhuan" as "Duke Zheng defeated Duan at Yan" originated here. The year Gengzi, 741 BCE, was when Prince Zhou Xu of Wei, who favored military prowess, was not restrained by Duke Zhuang of Wei. The year Xinchou, 740 BCE, was when Chu experienced internal strife, and Xiong Tong killed the king and took the throne, later known as King Wu of Chu. The year RENYIN, 739 BCE, was when internal strife occurred in Jin, and the minister Pan Fu killed King Zhao of Jin, attempting to invite Quwo Huan Shu to take the throne but failing. In the year Dingsi, which was 484 BCE, Confucius ended his fourteen-year journey and returned to Lu from the State of Wei. After this, he edited the Book of Poetry and the Book of Documents, revised the rites and music, arranged the Zhou Changes, and compiled the Spring and Autumn Annals. His disciple Zi Gong traveled to Qi, Wu, Yue, and Jin, making persuasive arguments to preserve Lu. In the same year, Qi attacked Lu, and Wu sent troops to rescue Lu, defeating the Qi army in the great battle of Ailing. King Goujia of Yue personally paid homage to King Wu of Wu, but secretly he was gathering strength to overthrow Wu.

In the year of Wuwu, around 483 BCE, it was the end of the Spring and Autumn period. Bai Gongsheng was the son of the murdered Prince Jian of Chu and the grandson of King Ping of Chu. He had been in exile earlier and that year fled to the state of Wu again. The chancellor of Chu, Zi Xi, the son of King Ping and the brother of King Zhao, recalled him again and stationed him in Chao, a city bordering Wu. That same year, King Fuchai of Wu met with Duke Ai Gong of Lu and Duke Chu Gong of Wei at Tuogao, near present-day Chao Lake in Anhui. Then he turned his army northward to attack Jin. In the year of Jiwei, 482 BCE, Duke Dinggong of Jin and the feudal lords of the Central Plains met with King Fuchai of Wu at Huangchi, near present-day Fengqiu in Henan, to form an alliance and compete for supremacy. Meanwhile, King Goujia of Yue took advantage of the fact that Wu's elite troops were all out fighting, and launched an attack on Wu, capturing the outer city of Wu's capital, capturing Wu's crown prince You, and then withdrew. In the year of Gengshen, 481 BCE, the state of Lu hunted in the western part of its capital and captured a qilin, and the Spring and Autumn Annals ended its records at this point, later known as the "Ending at the Capture of the Qilin." Meanwhile, the minister Tian Chang (Chen Chengzi) of the state of Qi killed the other minister who shared power with him, Ji Zhi, and later killed Duke Jian of Qi in Shuzhou, and installed Duke Jian's younger brother, Maoyi, as the new king, who became Duke Ping of Qi. He also allocated the land east of Anping as his own fief, thus establishing the dominance of the Tian clan in Qi. Upon hearing this, Confucius requested that Lu send an army to attack, but his request was not accepted. Duke Dao of Qin died, and his son Duke Li succeeded him. Jin attacked Zheng. In the Xinyou year (480 BCE), the state of Lu sent the official Zifubing Jingbo on a mission to the state of Qi, with Confucius' disciple Zigong as his deputy. Using his eloquent arguments, Zigong succeeded in persuading Qi to return the territory it had previously occupied from Lu. Meanwhile, the exiled crown prince Kuaike of Wei secretly returned from Qi to seize the throne, becoming King Zhuanggong of Wei. His son, Zhe, fled to Lu. For over ten years, there had been a struggle between father and son for the throne in Wei, but at this time the situation changed. In the same year, Ye Gong Shen Zhuliang of Chu led his troops into Ying to quell the rebellion, killing the rebel Bai Gongsheng, and restoring King Huiwang Xiong Zhang to the throne. Chu also conquered the state of Chen, and transformed the territory of Chen into a county of Chu. In the Renxu year (479 BCE), Confucius died in Lu at the age of seventy-three. In the Guihai year (478 BCE), Jin attacked Wei. King Zhuanggong of Wei fled, and the people of Wei installed Gongbishī as their new ruler. Soon after, Qi attacked Wei and captured Gongbishī, replacing him with Gongqi. Meanwhile, the King of Yue, Goujia, defeated the Wu army in Lize (in the area of Wuxi in present-day Jiangsu), and Wu never recovered from this defeat.
