Reprint of the Volume Eight, Part Two of the "Essential Knowledge for the Human Child: The Heart of Filial Piety and the Unified Tradition of Geomancy"

江右山人徐善繼述同著。

This volume still bears the title "Jiangyou Shanren Xu Shanji and Xu Shanshu jointly composed." The previous volumes discussed the spatial principles of dragon, tomb, terrain, water, and orientation. This final volume shifts to time-related auspices and inauspiciousness: it pairs the sixty Jiazi years with the twenty-four mountain directions into a reference table, indicating which mountain directions are highly favorable, somewhat favorable, or unfavorable for a particular year, to be used when selecting the time for burial and the direction to face.

太史公曰：“陰陽之術甚詳而眾忌諱，使人拘而多所畏。”儒者遂一切置而不講，至觸諱犯忌，一有不利，曰此偶然耳。則又矯枉過直，與太史公私旨謬矣。獨怪夫業斯術者，務為名高，往往杜撰神煞名號。其言禍福之應如響，乃甲是而乙非，此棄而彼取，載在簡編，莫知適從。噫！敝也久矣！

Simatai Qian wrote in "Shiji · Taishi Gong Zixu" that the doctrine of yin and yang is too detailed and full of taboos, making people feel restricted in everything and afraid of everything. Scholars thus simply gave up discussing it altogether. When they actually encountered taboos or unfortunate events, they would say it was just a coincidence. This is a case of overcorrecting, which actually goes against Taishi Gong's original intention. What is particularly strange is that those who engage in this field are eager for fame and often invent many names of divine and ominous forces. They speak of the verification of fortune and misfortune as if it were as responsive as an echo. However, one family says it is correct while another says it is wrong; what one family discards is adopted by another. All of these are written in black and white in the books, leaving people unsure of which school to follow. Alas! This problem has existed for a long time.

廖金精氏曰：“神煞杳冥多潛變，世人有眼何曾見？眼既不見耳不聞，焉知山向占不占。”有味哉其言之也！第諸書神煞之傳，相沿既久，拘忌成習，不可盡革。謹編山向便覽一卷，以六十年太歲為綱，二十四山向為目，開卷則知某年某山向大利，某山向小利，某山向不利，庶易於檢擇，不以多岐亡羊，且以序四時之大順雲。時萬曆十年壬午春王正月，德興山人徐善述寓雲杜五華山房謹書。

Liao Jinjing said: Divine omens and portents are profound and hard to measure, changing secretly in the dark. Even though people have eyes, have they ever seen them? Since the eyes cannot see and the ears cannot hear, how can one know which mountain direction they occupy? These words are truly meaningful! However, the transmission of divine omens and portents in various books has been passed down for a long time, and superstitions have become customary, making it impossible to completely eliminate them. Therefore, I carefully compiled a volume called "Mountain Direction Guide" with the sixty-year cycle of the heavenly stem as the main framework and the twenty-four mountain directions as the subcategories. By simply opening it, one can immediately know whether a particular mountain direction is highly favorable, somewhat favorable, or unfavorable for a certain year. This makes it convenient for people to choose, avoiding confusion like lost sheep in a crossroad. It also helps to follow the great order of the four seasons. Written in the spring of the first month of the Renwu year in the tenth year of the Wanli era, Xu Shanshu, a scholar from Dexing Mountain, stayed at Wuhua House in Yundu and recorded this.

甲子年：大利山向，酉山卯，六、七月。小利山向，乾山巽。不利山向：壬山丙浮天空、向煞，子山午年克，癸山丁年克，丑山未年克，艮山坤陰府，寅山申年克，甲山庚年克、傍陰府，卯山酉炙退，乙山辛羅天退，辰山戌年克、地官符，巽山乾年克、陰府，巳山亥三殺，丙山壬坐殺、傍陰府，午山子三殺，丁山癸坐殺，未山丑三殺、年克，坤山艮年克，申山寅年克，庚山甲年克，辛山乙傍陰府、年克，戌山辰年克，亥山巳天官符。

In the Jiazi year, the most favorable mountain direction for burial is facing east from west (sitting west, facing east). It is suitable to break ground and bury in June and July. The next most favorable direction is facing south from north (sitting north, facing south). The unfavorable directions are listed below, with the offending spiritual omens noted in parentheses: sitting north and facing south incurs floating sky and direction evil; sitting zi and facing wu incurs year killing, which is the five elements of the heavenly stem killing the mountain; sitting kui and facing ding incurs year killing; sitting chou and facing wei incurs year killing; sitting gen and facing kun incurs yin official; sitting yin and facing shen incurs year killing; sitting jia and facing geng incurs year killing and adjacent yin official; sitting mao and facing you incurs scorching retreat; sitting yi and facing xin incurs Luo Tian retreat; sitting chen and facing xu incurs year killing and earth official symbol; sitting xun and facing qian incurs year killing and yin official; sitting si and facing hai incurs three killings; sitting bing and facing ren incurs sitting killing and adjacent yin official; sitting wu and facing zi incurs three killings; sitting ding and facing kui incurs sitting killing; sitting wei and facing chou incurs three killings and year killing; sitting kun and facing gen incurs year killing; sitting shen and facing yin incurs year killing; sitting geng and facing jia incurs year killing; sitting xin and facing yi incurs adjacent yin official and year killing; sitting xu and facing chen incurs year killing; sitting hai and facing si incurs heavenly official symbol. Those who commit sitting killing should avoid sitting; those who commit direction evil should avoid facing; those who commit three killings or yin official should avoid all activities throughout the year.

In the year of Yichou, there are three favorable mountain directions: facing Qian (Heaven) from Xun (Wind), which is suitable in January, April, August, September, and October; facing Ren (Water) from Bing (Fire), suitable in February, March, August, September, and November; and facing Zi (Water) from Wu (Fire), suitable in March, August, September, and December. There are five less favorable mountain directions: facing Bing (Fire) from Ren (Water), facing Wei (Earth) from Chou (Earth), facing Gen (Mountain) from Kun (Earth), facing Hai (Water) from Si (Fire), and facing Xu (Earth) from Chen (Earth). Unfavorable mountain directions are as follows: facing Zi (Water) from Wu (Fire) causes burning retreat; facing Ding (Fire) from Geng (Metal) causes floating emptiness, loss, and retreat; facing Chou (Earth) from Wei (Earth) causes adjacent Yin official; facing Kun (Earth) from Gen (Mountain) causes annual conflict; facing Yin (Wood) from Shen (Metal) causes three killings; facing Jia (Wood) from Geng (Metal) causes sitting煞 and adjacent Yin official; facing Mao (Wood) from You (Metal) causes three killings and annual conflict; facing Yi (Wood) from Xin (Metal) causes sitting煞; facing Si (Fire) from Hai (Water) causes annual conflict, adjacent Yin official, and official symbol; facing Chen (Earth) from Xu (Earth) causes three killings; facing Ding (Fire) from Geng (Metal) causes adjacent Yin official; facing Shen (Metal) from Yin (Wood) causes official symbol, and this direction should also avoid construction and starting work; facing Geng (Metal) from Jia (Wood) causes direction煞; facing You (Metal) from Mao (Wood) causes Yin official; facing Xin (Metal) from Yi (Wood) causes direction煞; facing Qian (Heaven) from Xun (Wind) causes Yin official.

There are four less favorable mountain directions: facing towards Gen from Xun, facing towards Jia from Geng, facing towards Chen from Xu, and facing towards Qian from Xun. In the year of Dingmao, there are six favorable mountain directions: facing south with the back to the north, suitable in March and April; facing Ding with the back to Gui, suitable in March, April, July, and October; facing Chou with the back to Wei, suitable in April, August, October, and December; facing Hai with the back to Si, suitable in September and November; facing Si with the back to Hai, suitable in January, February, March, April, July, and December; facing Qian with the back to Xun, suitable in February, June, and October. There are six less favorable mountain directions: facing Gen with the back to Kun, facing Mao with the back to You, facing Chen with the back to Xu, facing Kun with the back to Gen, facing Xun with the back to Qian, and facing Ding with the back to Gui. In the year of Wuchen, there is only one favorable mountain direction: facing east and facing west, suitable for the months of June and October. There is also only one slightly favorable mountain direction: facing mountain and facing earth. Since this year is of the earth element, there are many instances of the year's element conflicting with the mountain directions among the twenty-four mountains, so there are very few usable directions. The unfavorable mountain directions are as follows: facing north and facing south causes a directional conflict; facing the north and facing the south causes a year conflict; facing the癸 and facing the丁 causes a year conflict and floating empty death; facing the丑 and facing the未 causes a year conflict; facing the寅 and facing the申 causes a year conflict; facing the甲 and facing the庚 causes a year conflict; facing the卯 and facing the酉 causes a scorched retreat and a阴府; facing the乙 and facing the辛 causes a Luo Tian retreat; facing the辰 and facing the戌 causes a year conflict; facing the巽 and facing the乾 causes a year conflict; facing the巳 and facing the亥 causes three conflicts; facing the丙 and facing the壬 causes a sitting conflict; facing the午 and facing the子 causes three conflicts; facing the丁 and facing the癸 causes a sitting conflict and floating empty death; facing the未 and facing the丑 causes a year conflict, three conflicts, and a nearby阴府; facing the庚 and facing the甲 causes a year conflict, nearby阴府, and a ground official symbol; facing the坤 and facing the艮 causes a year conflict and floating empty death; facing the申 and facing the寅 causes a year conflict; facing the辛 and facing the乙 causes a year conflict; facing the戌 and facing the辰 causes a year conflict; facing the亥 and facing the巳 causes a nearby阴府 and a heavenly official symbol.

There are six less favorable mountain directions: facing丑 with the back to未, facing坤 with the back to艮, facing庚 with the back to甲, facing戌 with the back to辰, facing乾 with the back to巽, facing亥 with the back to巳. In the year of Gengwu, there are five favorable mountain directions: facing Gen towards Kun, suitable in August and September; facing Yin towards Shen, suitable in March, July, August, and September; facing Mao towards You, suitable in January, May, and July; facing Yi towards Xin, suitable in March, April, July, November, and December; facing Chen towards Xu, suitable in February, March, April, June, July, November, and December. There are four less favorable mountain directions: facing Wei towards Chou, facing Kun towards Gen, facing Shen towards Yin, and facing Geng towards Jia. Unfavorable mountain directions include: facing Ren towards Bing, which causes a sitting death; facing Zi towards Wu, which causes three deaths; facing Gui towards Ding, which causes a sitting death; facing Chou towards Wei, which causes three deaths and adjacent Yin official; facing Jia towards Geng, which causes adjacent Yin official; facing Si towards Hai, which causes scorching retreat, Yin official, and heavenly official symbol; facing Bing towards Ren, which causes directional death; facing Wu towards Zi, which causes major death, this is the position of the year's ruler, the most unfavorable in the year; facing Ding towards Gui, which causes year killing, directional death, floating empty death, and adjacent Yin official; facing You towards Mao, which causes scorching retreat, adjacent Yin official, and year killing; facing Xin towards Yi, which causes Luo Tian retreat; facing Xu towards Chen, which causes earth official symbol; facing Qian towards Xun, which causes year killing and Yin official; facing Hai towards Si, which causes year killing and three deaths.

In the Xinwei year, there are two directions most favorable for burial: facing north and facing south, which are suitable for January, March, April, July, and October. This direction is suitable only for burial and should be avoided for building houses. Another favorable direction is facing east and facing west, suitable for January, March, June, October, and November. There are three less favorable directions: facing north and facing southeast, facing mountain and facing earth, and facing east and facing west. Directions to avoid are as follows: facing north and facing south, which conflict with the year and the Yin official; facing癸 and facing丁, which conflict with the year and the Yin official; facing丑 and facing未, which conflict with the year; facing寅 and facing申, which conflict with the year and the heavenly official; facing甲 and facing庚, which conflict with the year and the direction killer; facing乙 and facing辛, which conflict with the direction killer and the Yin official; facing辰 and facing戌, which conflict with the year and the Yin official; facing southeast and facing north, which conflict with the year; facing丙 and facing壬, which involve floating void and are suitable only for burial and not for building; facing午 and facing子, which involve burning retreat; facing丁 and facing癸, which involve the heavenly retreat; facing未 and facing丑, which conflict with the year; facing earth and facing mountain, which conflict with the year and the Yin official; facing申 and facing寅, which conflict with the year, three killers, and the Yin official; facing酉 and facing卯, which involve three killers; facing辛 and facing乙, which conflict with the year and the sitting killer; facing戌 and facing辰, which conflict with the year and three killers; facing亥 and facing巳, which involve the earthly official.

In the Renshen year, there are five favorable mountain directions: facing Kun and facing Gen, suitable in February, May, September, October, November, and December; facing Shen and facing Yin, suitable in February, March, September, November, and December; facing Geng and facing Jia, suitable in January, February, April, July, and October, this direction is unfavorable for construction but favorable for burial; facing You and facing Mao, suitable in January, February, May, June, July, and October; facing Xin and facing Yi, suitable in January, February, April, July, August, October, November. There are five less favorable mountain directions: facing Chou and facing Wei; facing Gen and facing Kun; facing Xun and facing Qian; facing Qian and facing Xun, but not favorable after the winter solstice; facing Hai and facing Si, also not favorable after the winter solstice. The unfavorable mountain directions are as follows: facing Ren and facing Chen violates the direction and adjacent Yin official; facing Zi and facing Wu violates the ground official symbol; facing Gui and facing Ding violates the direction; facing Yin and facing Shen violates the adjacent Yin official; facing Jia and facing Geng violates the floating sky and void; facing Mao and facing You violates the burning retreat; facing Yi and facing Xin violates the Luo Tian retreat; facing Chou and facing Xu violates the White Tiger; facing Si and facing Hai violates the adjacent killing; facing Bing and facing Ren violates the sitting killing; facing Wu and facing Zi violates the three killings and Yin official; facing Ding and facing Gui violates the sitting killing and year killing; facing Wei and facing Chou violates the three killings; facing Xu and facing Chen violates the adjacent Yin official.

In the Guiyou year, there are four favorable mountain directions: facing Qian from Xun, suitable in April, September, and October; facing Hai from Si, suitable in April, July, August, and September; facing Bing from Ren, suitable in February, May, June, November, and December; facing Zi from Wu, suitable in January, February, May, June, August, and December. There are four less favorable mountain directions: facing Bing from Ren, facing Kun from Gen, facing Gen from Kun, and facing Chen from Xu; among these, facing Bing from Ren has already been mentioned as favorable, and this refers to its general applicability beyond specific months. The unfavorable mountain directions are as follows: facing Wu from Zi causes the effect of burning retreat; facing Ding from Gui causes the effect of Luo Tian retreat; facing Wei from Chou causes the effect of Di Guan symbol; facing Shen from Yin causes the effect of three killings; facing Geng from Jia causes the effect of sitting killing; facing You from Mao causes the effect of three killings and Yin Fu; facing Xin from Yi causes the effect of sitting killing and floating empty loss; facing Xu from Chen causes the effect of three killings; facing Gui from Ding causes the effect of year killing; facing You from Wei causes the effect of by-side Yin Fu; facing Yin from Shen causes the effect of Tian Guan symbol; facing Jia from Geng causes the effect of facing killing and by-side Yin Fu; facing Mao from You causes the effect of year killing; facing Yi from Xin causes the effect of facing killing; facing Qian from Xun causes the effect of year killing; facing Si from Hai causes the effect of year killing and by-side Yin Fu.

This year corresponds to the fourth year of the Wanli era, which is 1576 AD. Every sixty years, the same pattern applies to all Bingzi years. There are three favorable directions: facing Yin and facing Shen, suitable for starting construction in January, February, March, April, May, June, August, September, and October; facing Geng and facing Jia, suitable for February, June, July, and October; facing Xu and facing Chen, suitable for March, July, and August.
