Charting guides: Flying Star Feng Shui Chart, Chinese Almanac

This volume is inscribed as "composed jointly by Jiangyou Mountain Man Xu Shanji and Xu Shanshu." The first two volumes discuss the pairing of dragons andsite with directions and the methods of terrain, and this volume shifts to the methods of water: first, it lists the names and auspicious or inauspicious implications of water according to the twenty-four directions, then divides into yin and yang systems to discuss the origin, flow into the site, and outlet of water, and finally lists twenty-eight auspicious types of water and twenty-four inauspicious types. This is a comprehensive summary of the form school's method of using the compass to manage water.

The water at the Ding position is called "People's Prosperity Water," which signifies a thriving population, increasing wealth, prosperity and longevity, high academic achievement and status, and the ability to marry into a noble family. The water at the Wei position is called "Color Clothing Water," which signifies consumption, hidden illnesses, theft, immoral scandals, leaving one's hometown, being an orphan, and family members often becoming monks or Taoists, living in solitude and hardship.

The water in the position of Kun is called "Ghost Arrow Water," indicating a situation where the mother is the head of the household, family members die early, there may be immoral behavior, or someone may leave home to become a monk or nun. The water in the position of Shen is called "Terminal Life Water," indicating that guests may die away from home, there may be early deaths, children may be disrespectful, there may be widows and orphans, and there may be people who are violent and unpredictable. The water in the position of Geng is called "Military Official Water," indicating that the person is brave and resourceful, will gain wealth and official rank, and is suitable for a military career. The water in the position of You is called "Golden Ribbon Water," indicating sudden wealth and high status, and wealth may be obtained through the wife's side. The water in the position of Xin is called "First-Class Examination Water," indicating natural intelligence, the ability to pass examinations, opening up treasure stores, accumulating wealth, and increasing property.

The water at the干 position is called 「widow and widower water」, which indicates twin births that are difficult to raise, family members suffering from chronic illness, the emergence of widowers and widows, disrespectful children, early death, and even extinction of descendants. The water at the亥 position is called 「wealth and honor water」, which indicates sudden great wealth and high status, prosperity for generations, and is the best among the twenty-four directions of water. The water at the壬 position is called 「leaving home water」, which indicates leaving one's hometown, suffering from jaundice and swelling, encountering floods, and women suffering miscarriages. The above twenty-four points only discuss the direction of the water, and it must be combined with the coming dragon and the facing direction for a comprehensive judgment; one should not rely solely on a single factor.

General Discussion on the Auspicious and Inauspicious Water Patterns of the Yin and Yang Divination Systems

The twenty-four directions are divided into yin and yang sectors. The yin sectors include Gen, Bing, Xun, Xin, Dui, Ding, Si, Chou, Zhen, Geng, Hai, and Wei, totaling twelve directions. Any dragon coming from a yin direction should be oriented towards a yin direction. Water should originate from a yin direction, flow towards the bright hall from a yin direction, and exit from a yin direction. Only when all is purely yin without any mixture is it considered auspicious. If yang water is mixed in, it is called 'yang water breaking the pattern,' which is inauspicious. However, in actual terrain, it is rare to find a completely pure and unmingled situation. When there is a mixture, it should be controlled through burial practices, using methods such as changing the water mouth, setting the direction, and releasing water to eliminate the mixed energy. It is not necessary to abandon the entire pattern due to a single impurity.

Those belonging to the Yang are the twelve positions: Gān (Heavenly Stem), Jiā (Jia), Kūn (Earth), Yǐ (Yi), Lí (Fire), Rén (Ren), Yín (Tiger), Xū (Dog), Kǎn (Water), Guǐ (Gui), Shēn (Monkey), and Chén (Dragon). Any dragon that comes from the Yang position should be oriented towards the Yang position; water should originate from the Yang position, flow towards the Bright Hall from the Yang position, and exit from the Yang position. Only when it is entirely Yang without any mixture is it considered auspicious. If there is a mixture of Yin position water in the middle, it is called 'Yin water breaking the Yang structure,' which indicates misfortune. The division between the Yang and Yin structures is the main principle of this book's water method, and all subsequent sections on auspiciousness and misfortune are derived from this.

The first type of "San Yang Shui" (Three Yang Water): water converges from the Xun, Bing, and Ding directions, then flows out toward the Geng, Dui, Zhen, and Gen directions, indicating receiving a fiefdom, establishing a military headquarters, and attaining a position among the Three Dukes. This refers to the Three Yang as described by the school of directional analysis. The school of form and terrain does not adhere to this view. During the Tang dynasty, Li Chunfeng said that the first convergence of flowing water is called one yang, the inner bright hall is called two yang, and the outer bright hall is called three yang; all three should be tightly formed. Zeng Wendi considered the inner bright hall as inner yang, the case mountain as middle yang, and the outer facing mountain as outer yang. It is evident that the term "San Yang" refers to the directions of water flow according to the directional school, and to the three layers of the terrain layout according to the form and terrain school. When applying this concept, one must clearly distinguish which school's perspective is being used.

The second item, "Six Constructions of Water": Water in the亥 (Hai) direction is called Tianjian (Heavenly Construction), water in the艮 (Gen) direction is called Di Jian (Earthly Construction), water in the丁 (Ding) direction is called Ren Jian (Human Construction), water in the卯 (Mao) direction is called Cai Jian (Wealth Construction), water in the巽 (Xun) direction is called Lu Jian (Rank Construction), and water in the丙 (Bing) direction is called Ma Jian (Horse Construction). This is the fixed directional arrangement of the Six Constructions according to the school of directional theory. The school of form theory does not adhere strictly to this. Zeng Wendi said: Water on the left side of the site is called Tianjian, which signifies official position and longevity; water on the right side is called Di Jian, which signifies farmland and residence; water in front of the site is called Ren Jian, which signifies descendants. Cai Jian should be determined based on the Five Phases of the main mountain. For example, if the mountain is寅 (Yin), then water in the丙 (Bing) direction is used, which signifies wealth. Lu Jian is also determined based on the main mountain. For example, if the mountain is甲 (Jia), then water in the寅 (Yin) direction is used, which signifies status and reputation. Ma Jian is also determined based on the main mountain. For example, if the mountain is申 (Shen), then water in the寅 (Yin) direction is used, which signifies vehicles and horses. The commentary by the two Xu says: Both interpretations are reasonable and should be referred to together.

Third clause "Six Auspicious Waters": refers to waters in the directions of Gen, Bing, Xun, Xin, Dui, and Ding. However, there are exceptions: when the mountain is oriented towards Xun, water in the Dui direction should be avoided, as it is the luminous malevolent star of Xun; when the mountain is oriented towards Gen, water in the Zhen and Xun directions should also be avoided, as they are controlling Gen's energy. In these two cases, the Six Auspicious Waters principle should not be applied. Fourth clause "Eight Noble Waters": Gen pairs with Bing, Xun pairs with Xin, Dui pairs with Ding, and Zhen pairs with Geng. These four pairs are harmonious combinations between the trigrams and the heavenly stems, thus indicating prosperity. Fifth clause "Five Auspicious Waters": water in the Ding direction is called Jade Gate Water, water in the Xun direction is called Brush Pen Water, water in the Xin direction is called School Hall Water, water in the Bing direction is called Golden Hall Water, and water in the Mao direction is called Treasure Granary Water. When all five are present, it is considered the Five Auspicious Waters.

The sixth section 「Sheshen Water」 refers to water from the Bing and Ding directions. The Li position represents the sovereign, while Bing and Ding are on both sides, symbolizing ministers. The sovereign issues commands, and the ministers carry out the sovereign's orders and convey them to the people. Therefore, the water from these two directions is called 「Sheshen Water」, indicating the ability to be pardoned and forgiven, and to resolve misfortune. Lai Buyi said: Water from Bing and Ding is called Sheshen Water, and the family will never suffer misfortune. The seventh section 「Longevity Water」 refers to water from the Gen, Ding, Bing, and Dui directions. The Southern Pole Star governs longevity: during the spring equinox, it appears in the Bing direction, and during the autumn equinox, it appears in the Ding direction. Bing is associated with Gen, and Ding is associated with Dui, and according to the Najia system, these four directions share the same energy. Therefore, water from these four directions signifies longevity.

The eighth section "Promoting Official Water": When a mountain is oriented towards the艮 (Gen) and the water is from the丙 (Bing), or when a mountain is oriented towards the震 (Zhen) and the water is from the庚 (Geng), or when a mountain is oriented towards the巽 (Xun) and the water is from the辛 (Xin), or when a mountain is oriented towards the兑 (Dui) and the water is from the丁 (Ding), these are all waters corresponding to the trigrams, which match the yin and yang of the dragon line. Therefore, they promote official status, bring promotion and higher rank, sudden wealth, and bring honor and fame. The ninth section "Cross Wealth Water": When a mountain oriented towards庚 (Geng) or辛 (Xin) has water from亥 (Hai), or when a mountain oriented towards卯 (Mao) has water from庚 (Geng) or辛 (Xin), or when a mountain oriented towards亥 (Hai) and艮 (Gen) has water from巽 (Xun), or when a mountain oriented towards庚 (Geng) and酉 (You) or辛 (Xin) has water from艮 (Gen), or when a mountain oriented towards离 (Li) has water from壬 (Ren), 子 (Zi), or癸 (Gui), or when a mountain oriented towards壬 (Ren) or癸 (Gui) has water from午 (Wu), or when a mountain oriented towards寅 (Yin) or甲 (Jia) has water from坤 (Kun) or申 (Shen), or when a mountain oriented towards坤 (Kun) or申 (Shen) has water from寅 (Yin) or甲 (Jia), these eight combinations are all pairs of yin and yang that match, thus bringing quick success. However, it is necessary that the water from that direction flows specifically towards the site, in order for the effect to be verified.

The tenth item, "Gold Belt Water": Water from the directions of Geng, You, and Xin surrounds and embraces the grave site, forming a shape like a belt, which is called Gold Belt Water; because these three directions belong to metal in the Five Phases. The eleventh item, "Silver Belt Water": Water from the Gen direction surrounds and embraces the grave site, called Silver Belt Water; Gen is the place where silver treasure is stored, and the radical of the character "silver" is "Gen", so the meaning is consistent. The twelfth item, "Gold Steps Water": Water from the directions of Geng, Dui, and Xin specially flows towards the grave site, or the water source in that area spreads flat like steps, which is called Gold Steps Water; again, this is because these three directions belong to metal. All three items are considered auspicious when water forms a surrounding embrace or flows directly towards the grave site, and they are most忌 when the water flows backwards, jumps away, or flies off at an angle.

The thirteenth item "Autumn Street Water": For a yin layout, the water from the Gen direction and the water from the Xun direction must specially flow towards the mound to be considered proper; for a yang layout, the water from the Qian direction and the water from the Kun direction must specially flow towards the mound to be considered proper. The rhyme says: The禄马 (favorable terrain) must be combined with the Autumn Street water; the positions of Kun, Shen, Yin, and Gen should be carefully arranged; if these directions also produce fine peaks, then it is truly a beautiful pattern, indicating descendants who uphold integrity and virtue, and are selected by the court for official positions. Another rhyme says: The Autumn Street water from the four directions of Qian, Kun, Gen, and Xun must flow continuously for more than a hundred paces; if there is also a grand terrain trend flowing towards the mound, with appropriate arrangement and alignment, the descendants will be able to hold positions in the eastern and western governorates, and be granted the honor of wearing golden fish bags.

Fourteenth Section "Yang Drum Water": When water from the directions of Gen, Xun, Zhen, and Dui flows towards the site and arrives first before the site, it is called Yang Drum First Sound. Fifteenth Section "Yin Drum Water": When water from the directions of Bing, Xin, Ding, and Geng flows towards the site and arrives first before the site, it is called Yin Drum First Sound. Xie Xianeng's "Record of the Ancestral Site of Hu Governor of Qinghua" says: If the Yang Drum has not yet sounded but the Yin Drum has already sounded, this family will still have a large population. What he refers to is the pattern where water from the Xin direction flows towards the site. Determining the Yang and Yin Drums depends on identifying which stream of water arrives first at the site, rather than on the quantity of water.

Section Sixteen 「Returning to the Origin Water」: When a site is established facing the亥 mountain or the艮 mountain and water is seen from the丙 or丁 or巳 direction, when a site is established facing the丙 or丁 mountain and water is seen from the亥 direction, when a site is established facing the震 or 巽 mountain and water is seen from the庚 direction, when a site is established facing the庚 or 酉 or 辛 mountain and water is seen from the震 direction, when a site is established facing the离 mountain and water is seen from the壬 or 癸 direction, when a site is established facing the壬 or 癸 mountain and water is seen from the坤 direction, these are all waters located at the 「绝」 and 「胎」 positions among the twelve growth stages. Such waters, even if they flow directly from the front of the site, or flow straight away from the front, will not cause harm, but they should not flow too far. According to the 「Comprehensive Treatise on Geography」, metal is绝 at 庚, water and earth are绝 at 丙, fire is绝 at 壬. Therefore, the positions of 甲, 庚, 丙, and 壬 are called 「Taiyi Returning to the Origin Water」, which indicate wealth and honor. This explanation is also reasonable and can be accepted alongside the previous one.

Seventeenth item "Official Star Water": When the mountain is set as Gen and the water is Dui, when the mountain is set as Dui and the water is Gen, when the mountain is set as Xun and the water is Zhen, Geng, or Hai, when the mountain is set as Hai and the water is Xun, when the mountain is set as Kan and the water is Li, when the mountain is set as Li and the water is Ren, these are all yin and yang properly matched and not mixed, so they indicate promotion of official status, gaining wealth and honor. Eighteenth item "Flower Net Water": When the mountain is set as Hai and the water is Si or Bing, when the mountain is set as Gen and Bing and the water is Geng, when the mountain is set as Xun and the water is Ding, when the mountain is set as Dui and Ding and the water is Xin, when the mountain is set as Geng and the water is Gen and Bing, when the mountain is set as Zhen and the water is Bing, when the mountain is set as Ren and Li and the water is Yi, when the mountain is set as Kun and the water is Ren. Two scholars openly admit: the principles behind this item are not yet fully understood, but since it is commonly used by Wu Jingluan and Dong Dezhang, it is retained without deletion. This attitude of preserving doubtful items is precisely the cautious nature of this book's style.

Nineteenth section "Ghost Country Water": Water flowing from the directions of Zhen and Gen should be allowed to flow from these directions.the so-called ghost country refers to the direction that overcomes me; water flowing from there is like sending away the evil qi. In a memorial submitted to the court by the famous master Wu Jingluan of the Song dynasty, he said: "Mountains should not be higher than the旺气 direction, and water should not be drained in the ghost country direction." He used geographical principles to advise the court, and later the Northern Song dynasty indeed suffered the Jingkang disaster. Twentieth section "Scholarly Water in the Academy": This refers to water from the directions of Xun, Xin, and Dui. Xun and Xin are the directions where Tianyi Star and Taiyi Star shine, while Xin and Dui are the places under the control of the Heavenly Emperor where literary affairs are managed. These three directions are associated with the authority of scholars and officials, and water from these directions signifies fame and prosperity in literature and officialdom.

The twenty-first item "Gold Fish Imperial Street Water": Water from the Bing direction flows into the Xun direction, then turns toward the Xin or Ding direction, indicating both wealth and honor; if there is also water or a high mountain corresponding to the Zhen direction in the east, it becomes even more honorable. The twenty-second item "Treasure Jade Stair Water": Water from the Gen and Bing directions flows into the Dui and Ding directions, indicating sudden official success and honor. The twenty-third item "People and Offspring Promote Officialdom Water": Water from the Bing direction flows toward the Ding direction and exits from the Dui direction, indicating a thriving population and honor. The twenty-fourth item "Golden Gate Horse Water": Water from the Bing direction flows into the Dui direction, then turns to the Xun direction and flows toward the Zhen direction, which is called Golden Gate摇臂 (the arm is bent and affectionate like a paddle), indicating great fame. These items all emphasize the sequence of water's coming and going and turning, not just where it is located.

The twenty-fifth item "Official Rank and Literati Water": Water flowing from the Xun direction comes slowly, indicating that there will be generations of scholars in the family, with brothers achieving success in the imperial examinations together. The twenty-sixth item "Official Rank and Wealth Water": Water from the Xun direction flows westward into the Hai direction, and if there are high mountains corresponding to the Dui and Zhen directions, it indicates great wealth. The twenty-seventh item "Golden Horse and Jade Hall": Water from the Xun direction flows into the west, specifically the Xin direction, and exits, indicating high official rank in the court, with honor in the Hanlin Academy; if the water from the Xin direction turns far towards the Ding direction, it indicates the emergence of outstanding and unique talents. The twenty-eighth item "Golden Gate and Ornamental Pillar Water": Water from the Xun direction flows towards the Gen direction, indicating that a woman in the family will enter the palace as a concubine. These twenty-eight auspicious waters should all be used in conjunction with the previous Yin and Yang two layouts.

All the evil water categories total twenty-four kinds.

The first category of凶水, called "Eight Mountains and Radiant Waters," states that when a mountain is oriented toward the艮 direction, water from the寅 direction should be avoided; when oriented toward the兑 direction, water from the巳 direction should be avoided; when oriented toward the震 direction, water from the申 direction should be avoided; when oriented toward the坤 direction, water from the卯 direction should be avoided; when oriented toward the巽 direction, water from the酉 direction should be avoided; when oriented toward the离 direction, water from the亥 direction should be avoided; when oriented toward the坎 direction, water from the辰 direction should be avoided; and when oriented toward the乾 direction, water from the午 direction should be avoided. This rule comes from the method of Najia hexagram arrangement, which uses the Five Phases associated with the Jiazi cycle to overcome the Five Phases of the Primary Hexagram. For example, the乾 hexagram belongs to metal, and theRenwu trigram included in the乾 palace belongs to fire, which overcomes metal. Therefore, when a mountain is oriented toward the乾 direction, water from the午 direction should be avoided, and this is called "radiant water." The other hexagrams follow the same principle. This kind of water is harmful whether it flows toward the site or disperses away. In severe cases, it may lead to the entire family being executed, while in lighter cases, it may cause injuries or legal troubles. It is extremely accurate. A mnemonic says: the坎 hexagram should avoid the dragon (辰), the坤 hexagram should avoid the rabbit (卯), the震 hexagram should avoid the monkey (申), the巽 hexagram should avoid the rooster (酉), the乾 hexagram should avoid the horse (午), the兑 hexagram should avoid the snake (巳), the艮 hexagram should avoid the tiger (寅), and the离 hexagram should avoid the pig (亥). These are all radiant waters. If they are encountered, both houses and tombs will be destroyed.

The second category, "Four Tombs Yellow Water," is also known as "Four Killers" or "Four Metal Waters," referring to waters from the four directions of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei. The tomb of metal is in Chou, the tomb of wood is in Wei, the tomb of fire is in Xu, and the tomb of water and earth is in Chen, hence the term "Four Tombs." "Tomb" means the storage of things from the earth; like a person's handsome appearance or jade's bright luster, once buried, that beauty can no longer be seen. The reason "tomb" is called "Yellow Spring" comes from the phrase in the "Zuo Zhuan" by Zheng Zhuanggong, "Without reaching the Yellow Spring, we shall not meet again." If a family has a young person who dies prematurely and is buried with their ancestors in the underworld, it is called the Yellow Spring. It is also called "Four Metals," because these four directions correspond to the four constellations of Kangle, Lou, Gui, and Niu in the Twenty-Eight Mansions. Lai Buyi said: if "Four Metal" waters flow towards, flow away, or directly face the direction of the house, it indicates chronic illness, widows, premature death, and loneliness. It is also called "Four Killers," as the "Song of the Ritual Method" says, "Wherever they meet, misfortune tends to be more," referring to this. Therefore, the waters of these four directions are extremely凶, causing premature death, loneliness, chronic illness, accidental death, immorality, tuberculosis, and plague; however, these effects only manifest when they break the existing structure.

Third clause: "Recurring Yellow Water," this kind of water is凶 no matter coming or going, so it is generally undesirable to see: for those facing the direction of Geng or Ding, the water from the Kun direction should be avoided; for those facing the direction of Yi or Bing, the water from the Xun direction should be avoided; for those facing the direction of Jia or Gui, the water from the Gen direction should be avoided; for those facing the direction of Xin or Ren, the water from the Qian direction should be avoided. This also belongs to the category of墓水, also known as "Four Directions Yellow Water," which is most忌 for water coming from that direction. According to the explanation in the Haijiao Classic: for example, the direction of Bing is associated with the Gen hexagram in the system ofNajia stem assignment; the direction of Yi is associated with the Kun hexagram. Gen belongs to earth, and theStorage of earth is in Chen, while the绝地 is in Si. Xun is exactly between Chen and Si, so seeing water from the Xun direction is凶. Not only is water忌, but even the direction of the door and path should be avoided. If violated, the calamity brought about is the same as that of the Four墓 Yellow Water.

In reverse: when facing the direction of Kun, it is undesirable to have water flowing from the direction of Geng or Ding; when facing the direction of Xun, it is undesirable to have water flowing from the direction of Yi or Bing; when facing the direction of Gen, it is undesirable to have water flowing from the direction of Jia or Gui; when facing the direction of Qian, it is undesirable to have water flowing from the direction of Xin or Ren. This group is called "Eight Paths of Yellow Spring." The undesirable aspect is water flowing towards that direction, which brings misfortune, similar to the previous case. Therefore, the first group is concerned with water coming, while this group is concerned with water going, and together they are called "Reversed Yellow Spring." The rhyme says: when facing Geng or Ding, the direction of Kun is considered the Yellow Spring; conversely, if facing Kun and seeing water from Geng or Ding, it is also not acceptable; when facing Xun, it is most undesirable to have water flowing towards Bing or Yi; when facing Yi or Bing, one must first prevent water from flowing towards Xun; when facing Jia or Gui, one should avoid water flowing towards Gen; when facing Gen and encountering Jia or Gui, misfortune will follow; when facing Qian, one should avoid water flowing towards Xin or Ren; when facing Xin or Ren, one should avoid water flowing towards Qian.

The fourth section, "Eight Stars and Water Killing," also known as "Eight Killings in Water," specifically prohibits water flowing away: for a direction facing Jia, water should not flow from the寅 direction; for Yi, water should not flow toward 辰; for Bing, water should not flow toward 午; for Ding, water should not flow toward 未; for Geng, water should not flow toward 申; for Xin, water should not flow toward 戌; for Ren, water should not flow toward 亥; and for Gui, water should not flow toward 丑. A mnemonic says: Jia direction fears water flowing from寅, Yi direction fears water flowing toward 辰, Bing and Ding directions fear water flowing toward 午 and 未 respectively, Geng and Xin directions fear water flowing toward 申 and 戌 respectively, and Ren and Gui directions fear water flowing toward 亥 and 丑 respectively. Another verse says: directions facing Bing, Ding, and Xin should avoid water flowing from寅, directions facing Ren and Gui should avoid encountering the snake (巳), directions facing Yi should avoid encountering the ox (丑), directions facing Geng should avoid encountering 申, and directions facing Jia should avoid encountering 亥, all of which may lead to criminal punishment and exile to another region. This section is also called "Eight Directions and Water Stars," and it generally indicates bad fortune. After determining the direction, one must first check where the water mouth falls, and if it touches an unfavorable position, the direction should be changed.

The fifth category, "Flower Water," also known as Salty Pool Water or娥眉 Water:卯 and酉 are the gateways for the moon's rising and setting. After the first day of the month and before the last day, the moon appears like a beautiful eyebrow, symbolizing beauty and allure, thus indicating desire.子 and午 are also discussed together because they are among the four cardinal directions. In a yang layout, it is undesirable to have water from卯 or酉 breaking the layout, which leads to disorder and promiscuity. However, if a dragon of the Renzi,癸 series comes with water from午, it instead brings sudden success, because the fire trigram (Li) and the stem Ren are paired according to Najia, and water can control fire, thus the fire energy is subdued and becomes auspicious. Conversely, if a dragon of the Li trigram encounters water from子, although it may bring blessings, there will inevitably be promiscuity in the family, because both are pure trigrams and cannot form a proper pair, and the dragon is instead controlled by the water trigram (Kan). In a yin layout, it is undesirable to have water from子 or午 breaking the layout, leading to promiscuity. However, if a dragon of the Geng or Xin series encounters water from卯, it instead brings great fortune, because the trigram Qian pairs with it, and metal can control wood, thus the water energy is subdued and becomes auspicious. If a mountain of the Zhen trigram faces water from卯 (the rabbit), even though it may bring blessings, there will inevitably be promiscuity, for the same reason: the trigrams are not properly paired, and the dragon is instead controlled by metal.

There is another rule: When the water from the坎 (Kan) dragon flows in the direction of离 (Li), this water should not flow into the酉 (You) direction, which is called 「flowing soul peach blossom water」, indicating promiscuity. Lai Buyi said: When the water from the坎 (Kan) dragon flows into the western兑 (Dui) position, there will certainly be cases of lovers running away together or meeting in secret places, leading to disgraceful affairs. The sixth rule 「wind sound water」 becomes effective when it breaks the original structure: the water from巽 (Xun) and巳 (Si) breaks the yang structure, indicating licentiousness and scandals. Lai Buyi said: The water from巽 (Xun) and巳 (Si) flows towards the main structure and breaks the yang structure. Moreover, the太乙 (Taiyi) position (which is巽) has a hill rising, so a young lady with a jade-like beauty may be disgraced through an abortion, ruining her spring-like appearance. The water from坤 (Kun) breaking the yin structure also indicates licentiousness and scandals; the yang water from坎 (Kan) and离 (Li) flowing into the yin structure also indicates licentiousness and scandals; the water from卯 (Mao) breaking the yang structure also indicates scandals. Lai Buyi said: The water from卯 (Mao) specially flows towards the main structure, indicating sudden success, but if the source is light and the sand shape is broken, it will bring about disgraceful affairs of lovers running away.

The seventh item, "Water of Leaving Home," also manifests its effect by breaking the current situation, referring to water in the directions of Li, Ren, Yin, and Xu. The character "离" itself means to leave, so it signifies leaving home far away. The directions of Ren, Yin, and Xu all belong to the Li trigram in the system of Najia Triple Harmony, so their effects are similar to those of Li water. Whenever water appears or flows in any of these four directions, if the location is auspicious, it indicates leaving home and achieving wealth abroad; if the location is inauspicious, it signifies the whole family migrating and fleeing everywhere. This shows that the same kind of water, whether auspicious or inauspicious, is determined by the nature of the location, while water only determines the aspect of "leaving home."

The eighth item 「Back Lu Water」—Back Lu is the name of the god of fire. It refers to water coming from the Wu direction along with the Bing direction, water from the Yin, Wu, and Xu directions, and water from the Yi and Chen directions breaking the Yin structure. The Li position is Yang fire, and the Bing position is Yin fire; if water from these two positions flows together, it will certainly cause fire. If only one of these directions flows alone, it is not a problem. Yin, Wu, and Xu form a Triple Harmony fire structure; if water flows into all three directions, or if there is a gap allowing wind to enter from these three directions, or if water flows out from these three directions, it will cause fire. Water coming from Yi and Chen directions flowing in and out to break the Yin structure is called 「carrying a killer fire」, which also indicates fire.

Two Xu commented that Lai Buyi's "On Hastening Officialdom" states that when the waters of "youhun" and "yinshu" flow together, they will cause a fire that burns red all over the sky in the years of Yin, Wu, and Xu. At the time of burial, one should pay more attention to the energies of the Dui and Hai directions, which will restrain the fire deity and prevent it from manifesting. Here, "youhun" refers to Wu, and "yinshu" refers to Bing. When the energies of these two directions merge, it is called "heaven and earth yin and yang fire," which inevitably leads to fire disasters, and such events often occur in the years of Yin, Wu, and Xu, when fire is strong. Therefore, in the practice of burial, one must use the method of "zhug qi" (noting the energy) within the gold well (the grave pit) to control it: one should first enhance the metal energy of the Dui direction to generate the water energy of the Hai direction, then use the water energy of the Hai direction to control the fire energy of Bing and Wu. In this way, the fire deity is restrained and cannot cause disasters. Nowadays, people do not understand the method of "zhug qi," and instead criticize its practice as wrong. This is because they do not comprehend the subtle function of human effort in harmonizing and guiding the workings of heaven and earth.

Here is a personal experience: During the Song dynasty, Liao Jinjing helped our county's Zhang family select a site for a residential house in the Wu Garden. The site was oriented with the back facing the Zi (Water Ox) and the front facing the Ding (Fire Ox). However, there was a flow of water coming from the Bingwu direction. Liao Jinjing knew that the family could not avoid fire, so he dug a pit in the Bingwu direction, naming it the "Fire-extinguishing Pit," and filled it with the energies from the Hai (Water Pig) and Dui (Lake) directions to control the fire. Before leaving, he warned them that from then on, their family would never suffer from fire. He repeatedly emphasized that this fire pit must never be filled. The Zhang family followed this rule for over five hundred years without any fire incidents. In the Renxu year of the Jiajing era, by accident, they filled up the fire pit. Within ten days, over a hundred houses were burned down. Moreover, the area where the fire started exactly corresponded to the part of the pit that had been filled. Where the pit was not filled, the fire turned back upon itself and was extinguished by the wind. The accuracy of this event was precise, demonstrating the wonders of geomancy and the effectiveness of controlling such forces. This incident was witnessed by me, and I have recorded it to inform those who are knowledgeable.

The ninth section, "Guan Guo Shui" (Water of Widowers and Orphans), refers to the water breaking the structure of the surrounding area, specifically the water from the dry direction breaking the structure, and the water from the earth direction conflicting with the yin dragon. The dry direction represents old yang, and the earth direction represents old yin. Both are extreme and lack the meaning of generation and growth, thus leading to the emergence of widowers and orphans, and in severe cases, even no descendants. Among these, the water from the dry direction is particularly dangerous, while the water from the earth direction is slightly less severe. The water from the dry direction breaking the yin structure leads to the emergence of widowers, chronic illnesses, and people who face sudden misfortunes. Lai Buyi said: When the yang qi (dry direction) water flows in and out, there will be people in the family who are lame but can still walk, and continuous occurrences of widowers, orphans, and taking in a husband or wife by marriage, eventually leading to the complete absence of people. The water from the earth direction breaking the yin structure leads to the emergence of widowed mothers, and the presence of immoral behavior, with many early deaths in the family. If there is also water from the west direction, it indicates the widowed mother having secret relations with monks and Taoists, and the emergence of nuns and monks. These situations must be further analyzed in conjunction with the shape of the surrounding hills. Lai Buyi said: When the yin qi (earth direction) water flows in abundantly into the tomb, the women in the family will experience endless sorrow. If there are also hills resembling lifting skirts or offering flowers in this direction, the women will be unchaste and bring about immoral behavior. If there is a round hill resembling a bowl, it will lead to the emergence of nuns and monks.

Tenth Section "Tuberculosis Water": Water from Yi and Chen breaks the pattern, water from Wei and Kun breaks the pattern, and water from Qian and Xu breaks the pattern. If the dragon pulse is along the four graveyards, or if sharp and evil stones shoot directly into the embrace, or if a concave wind blows onto the grave site, and also the converging water breaks the original pattern, it will lead to tuberculosis, which is extremely dangerous. If the original pattern is not broken, there will be no problem. Eleventh Section "Early Death Water": Water from Chen breaks the pattern, water from Xu and Qian breaks the pattern, and water from Kun and Shen breaks the pattern. Lai Buyi said: When water flows in from the mansion of the Neck (Chen) and the mansion of the Bond (Xu), these two directions of water flowing in are not auspicious, leading to early death of the young and rebellious children without loyalty. He also said: Water from the Kun direction flows abundantly into the tomb, causing the women in the family to suffer endless sorrow.

The twelfth item 「Stagnant Water」, each position corresponds to specific effects: Water in the寅 position and with the stem 甲 disrupts the structure, indicating people with lameness, disabilities, blindness, hunchback. Water in the辰 position disrupts the structure, indicating people with cleft lip, exposed teeth, muteness, deafness, and ear problems. Water with the stems 壬 and 癸 disrupts the structure, indicating swelling, edema, drowning, and suicide by hanging, as well as women's blood collapse. Water in the戌 position and with the stem 干 disrupts the structure, indicating muteness, blindness, deafness, and lameness. Water in the午 position disrupts the structure, indicating blindness. When water in the four墓 positions 辰, 戌, 丑, and 未 all disrupt the structure, it indicates chronic, incurable diseases and rebellious, violent behavior. All these are based on the premise of 「disrupting the structure」: even if water is in these positions, if it does not disrupt the pure yin and yang energy of the structure, it should not be interpreted this way.

The thirteenth item, "Water of Punishment," is the most accurate in breaking the original configuration: the Dragon of Water meets the Water of Chen and Xun, the Dragon of Earth meets the Water of Mao, the Dragon of Thunder meets the Water of Gen and Shen, the Dragon of Fire meets the Water of Hai, the Dragon of Heaven meets the Water of Bing and Wu, the Dragon of Xun meets the Water of You, the Dragon of Mountain meets the Water of Yin and Jia. This is the same as the first item mentioned earlier, referring to the eight mountains and waters, which indicate suffering from punishment. The evil effects can be as severe as the entire family being executed; even if it is a good site, it may lead to family members being punished, or being killed by thieves, or dying in battle, and this is extremely accurate. If the original configuration is not broken, this effect does not occur. The same group of waters is repeated here because the eight luminaries specifically govern punishment and killing, and they are specially highlighted to serve as a warning.

Fourteenth Section "Water in Prison": Water in the午 position breaks the Yin structure, as does water in the辰 and戌 positions. Because the Heavenly Prison Star is located in the午 position, and the Nobleman is not present in the辰 or戌 positions, the water in these three positions breaks the structure, indicating imprisonment. If these three positions also have sand formations resembling prisons or shackles, or roads winding like chains, the danger is even greater, and it indicates death in prison. Fifteenth Section "Sudden Death Water": Water breaking the structure in the辰 position and water breaking the structure in the戌 position. The辰 position is the Heavenly Net, and the戌 position is the Earthly Net, both indicating entrapment. Therefore, water breaking the structure in these two positions indicates sudden and violent death, with a tragic fate of being crushed to death.

The sixteenth item, "Evil Water Death," indicates different methods of death according to the directions. Water breaking the pattern in the癸 direction leads to drowning or death from poison. Water breaking the pattern in the甲 direction leads to hanging or death from being crushed by wood or stone. Water breaking the pattern in the午 direction leads to death in prison or by fire. Water breaking the pattern in the丑 direction leads to death by weapons or punishment. Water breaking the pattern in the申 direction leads to death in battle or drowning. Water breaking the pattern in the乙 and辰 directions leads to being crushed by wood or drowning. Water breaking the pattern in the干 direction leads to being crushed by stone or execution. Water breaking the pattern in the寅 direction leads to being bitten by a tiger or death from boiling water and fire. Water breaking the pattern in the巳 direction leads to being bitten by a snake or suicide by hanging. All these representations are derived from the five elements of the respective directions.

Seventeenth item "Military exile water": water from the午 direction, water from the寅 direction, water from the癸 direction, water from the辰 direction, and water from theGengshen direction. If any of these waters break the existing structure, the family will surely suffer exile or be sent to distant places for military service; even a lighter case will result in migration and wandering. Eighteenth item "Bandit water": when these waters break the existing structure, they will manifest as follows: water from the乙辰 direction, water from the辛戌 direction, water from the寅申 direction, water from the丑癸 direction, and water from the未坤 direction. If the land itself is auspicious, the family will often suffer from theft and robbery; if the land is inauspicious, the family will produce thieves themselves. The same water can result in either being victimized or becoming a source of harm, depending on the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of the land.

Nineteenth item "Beggar Water": Water flowing from the Chen direction breaks the pattern, and water flowing from the Xu direction also breaks the pattern. If the water from these two directions flows straight without any ridges or mountains to intercept and control it at the front, and the site's orientation happens to follow the direction of the water flow, the family will decline to the point of begging at the door.所谓 "following the flow" means that the direction of the main building and the direction of the water flow are the same, and the energy is drained away with the water without being retained. Twentieth item "Slaughter Water": Water from the four directions of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei converges and flows together, which is called four killing waters. Even if the land itself is auspicious, the people born there will not be anything better than butchers and slaughterers.

The twenty-first section "Mingling Water" —— Mingling refers to an adopted son: water from the west, water from the卯 and乙, water from the乙 and辰, water from the辛 and戌, and water from the乾 direction. Lai Buyi says: when water from the Tian Guan (乙) flows in and out, the family will adopt a son or take in a son-in-law to continue the family line. He also says: when water from the Yang Ji (乾) flows in and out, there will be a person who is lame but can walk with difficulty, and widowers and those who take in a son-in-law will come one after another, eventually leading to the complete disappearance of people. The twenty-second section "Rebellious Water": water from the辰 direction breaks the pattern, water from the戌 direction breaks the pattern. Lai Buyi says: when water flows into the Kangle (辰) and Lousu (戌) mansions, it is not a good place, leading to the death of young people, rebellious sons and daughters, and a lack of loyalty and sincerity.

The twenty-third item, "Devil Water," refers to water flowing from the Chou direction and the Wei direction. Chou belongs to the Ox and the Metal of the Host Star, while Wei belongs to the Ghost and the Metal of the Host Star; both are considered improper energies, thus causing supernatural disturbances and strange occurrences. The twenty-fourth item, "Snake and Tiger Water," refers to water flowing from the Si direction, which is associated with snake bites, and water from the Yin direction, which is associated with tiger bites. These are determined by the disruption of the original layout; this is based on the corresponding creatures associated with each direction. There are two burial sites, one in Huizhou Cheng's family and the other in Leping Zhu's family, both of which have had incidents of people being injured by tigers. Both sites have water flowing from the Yin direction. The original interpretation stated: "At midnight, they become husband and wife, with eight hundred people in the family." The diagram is shown in the section discussing grave site taboos.

"The River汨 Water" refers to water that causes disruption. It includes the water of Renzi, the water of Zi and Gui, the water of Gengshen, and the water of Yi and Chen. These groups all belong to the water direction. When the water is too strong and breaks the original pattern, it indicates danger of drowning. "Poisonous Water" refers to the water from the癸 direction and the water from the丑 direction flowing together and breaking the original pattern. Lai Buyi said: When the阴光 (癸) and天厨 (丑) waters converge around the tomb, the descendants follow their mother to remarry and forget their ancestral roots, young people suffer poisoning death due to women's affairs, and brothers fight each other. If there is water from theHeavenly Doctor direction to resolve this, there is no need to be cautious.

"The 'Plague Water' type: When water is found in the direction of Xu and Ganshui when the mountain is set as Zhen, or in the direction of Wei and Kun when the mountain is set as Gen, or in the direction of Chou and Gui when the mountain is set as Dui, or in the direction of Xu when the mountain is set as Xun, or in the direction of Gen and Yin when the mountain is set as Li, or in the direction of Bing and Wu when the mountain is set as Kan, it indicates plague. The 'Miscarriage Water' type: Water in the direction of Zi and Gui breaks the Yin structure, and water in the direction of Xun and Si breaks the Yang structure, both indicating miscarriage for women. The 'Thunder Shock Water' type: When water is present in the directions of Hai, Mao, and Wei simultaneously, it indicates thunder striking the tomb and injuring living people; when water is found in the directions of Hai and Wei when the mountain is set as Zhen, it definitely indicates thunder shock. Lai Buyi said: When water flows from the Wei direction and the dragon comes from the Zhen position, a thunderclap will shake both the east and west sides."

The "Left Path Water" category refers to water flowing from the Wei direction and the Chou direction. Water from these two directions tends to indicate the emergence of monks, Taoist priests, magicians, and vegetarian laymen. Even if the land is auspicious, it suggests that the family may have a preference for religious activities such as offering to the Buddha and supporting monks, thus spending their wealth on such matters. Lai Buyi said: When water from the Ghost Mansion (Wei) and the Ox Mansion (Chou) flows back and forth, although it is called auspicious, families that recite scriptures and chant the Buddha often encounter misfortunes such as loneliness, orphans, and premature death. This is consistent with the previous interpretations of "Blood Wealth Water" and "Colorful Robe Water." It is evident that the Wei and Chou directions are always associated with the Left Path in this book's water divination methods.

"The 'Fanning Coffin and Covering Coffin with Water' pattern: In the戌 (Xu) direction, there is a depression allowing wind to enter, and water directly shoots in. In the乙辰 (Yi Chen) direction, there is a depression with wind shooting water. In the癸丑 (Gui Chou) direction, there is a depression with wind shooting water. In the未坤 (Wei Kun) direction, there is a depression with wind shooting water. These four directions all have depressions allowing wind to enter and water shooting in, meaning the wind carries the water into the grave site together. This is especially dangerous, so it causes the coffin and its cover to be overturned. Lai Buyi said: When four metal sands are low and depressed, once wind enters, the coffin and its cover will be overturned, and the family will suffer. He also said: When water shoots and wind enters from the four metal directions, the disaster of overturning the coffin and its cover is not light. When examining, one must squat at the grave site's center, look around to see if there are any openings, and then check whether the opening is directly facing water coming in."

"The 'Tree Root Piercing the Board' pattern includes: water from the寅 branch with the Jia stem, water from the辰 branch with the Yi stem, and water from the戌 branch with the Geng stem. These waters will break the pattern and produce the corresponding effects. However, the phenomenon of tree roots piercing the coffin is not limited to these types of water. Whenever the dragon line lacks true energy and the burial site is exposed to wind, tree roots will inevitably enter the coffin, piercing through the corpse, which is very ominous. If the tree roots pierce the eyes, the descendants will suffer from eye problems; if they enter the ears, the descendants will be deaf; if they pierce the back, the descendants will suffer from back sores; if they pass through the feet, the descendants will be lame. This is a typical explanation in this book of how physical forms and energies influence human fate, known as 'earthly misfortune affecting people.' When examining a burial site, one must pay attention to the direction and distance of large trees around it."

"The 'Yellow Spring Soaking Corpse Water' category includes: Yi-Chen water breaking the pattern, Kun-Shen water breaking the pattern, Ren-Zi water breaking the pattern, Xu-Gan water breaking the pattern, and Yin-Shen water breaking the pattern. However, water soaking the corpse is not limited to these types: wherever the dragon ridge lacks energy and the burial site is exposed to wind, even if the tomb is built on a very high mountain, there will still be water inside the tomb. Once water soaks the corpse, over time it gradually turns black and rots, leading to illness and jaundice in descendants, swelling, and a gradual decline of the family line, not just poverty and low status. 'Xun' means gradual. If the original pattern is not broken, it is not the situation described in this category."

"The 'Ants and Rats Penetrating the Coffin' pattern: waters from directions such as Yi Chen, Yin Jia, Jia Mao, Gen Yin, Shen Geng, Xin Xu, Wei Kun, Gui Chou, Chen Xun, Kun Shen, and Gān Hài are all effective only when the dragon and grave site are not genuine. Ants and rats penetrating the coffin are not limited to these directions; wherever two energies clash and conflict, ants will certainly appear. I have personally seen old graves dug up during relocation having ants, not only penetrating the coffin but also devouring the bones in old graves, which is extremely fierce. This shows that the root of the ant problem lies in the inauthenticity of the dragon and grave site, and the conflicting energies, while the directions and waters are merely contributing factors to the formation of the problem."
