Charting guides: Flying Star Feng Shui Chart, Chinese Almanac

Here originally was a chart with horizontal headings of "Woxue, Qianxue, Ruxue, and Tuxue," but the illustration is now lost. The text states: the site of the side brain Jupiter star is inclined, with energy flowing toward one side. The site cannot be placed directly on top of the star, but must rely on the "Le Mountain" behind it for burial (original note: among Ruxue and Tuxue, there is no need for Le Mountain). Although the form is inclined, its power is great. However, it still depends on the shape of the site: Woxue should have a round, clean interior with distinct edges; Qianxue should have a hidden energy within the钳, with both arms bending around; Ruxue should have a smooth, round top with a spacious and open area inside; Tuxue should have a smooth, round surface with an outstanding form. Only then can the site be considered in accordance with the principles of geomancy. In addition, there must be clear supporting evidence and the water flow must be in accordance with the rules, to be considered a true formation. It must be carefully examined and nothing should be overlooked.

Plane Jupiter Pit Pattern

Here was originally a chart with horizontal headings of "Category, Straight Wood, Horizontal Wood, Curved Wood" and vertical headings of "Wok Cave, Clamp Cave, Breast Cave, Protruding Cave," but the diagram is now lost. The text explains: this type of star mountain is long and straight, with a flat and low surface, so it is called "Flat Wood Star," and there are three types in total. Those with straight pulses have shapes resembling the character "卜" or "下," and all straight ones belong to this category. Straight Wood should not be directly opposite the pulse head for the cave, as that would commit the "Struggle Pulse Evil." Wu Jingluan's "Oral Instructions" says: "Wood Star dislikes the cave directly facing the pulse head; committing the Struggle Pulse Evil will cause the family to decline. Either adhering to the cave or leaning against the cave is considered extraordinary; flashing away and escaping from the evil should be known." Therefore, whenever encountering Straight Wood, one must find an "Adhering Cave" to escape the evil influence, or find a "Leaning Cave" to avoid the evil influence; the basis for an Adhering Cave is the presence of a lip carpet below, and the basis for a Leaning Cave is the presence of a branch beside it. This is the essential point.

The pulse of the land comes horizontally, with shapes resembling the character "工" (gong), "土" (tu), or "上" (shang). All horizontal forms belong to this category. A horizontal wooden ridge should not face directly towards the hillside's waist where the burial site is located, as this would commit the "cutting pulse" (zhan mai sha) offense. Wu Jingluan's "Oral Instructions" states: "A fallen wooden star, even if it is a hundred zhang long, whether horizontal or vertical, can be used for burial. For vertical ones, seek the adhering and leaning points, avoiding direct confrontation with the pulse head. For horizontal ones, examine whether the middle section has vigorous knots." Even though a horizontal wooden ridge is longer than a vertical one, it is more difficult to determine the burial site, and one must rely on features such as protrusions, depressions, or钳口 (qiankou, clamp mouth) as references. This is the essential principle. Both straight and horizontal wooden ridges are considered standard forms. In addition, there are cases where the pulse bends, forming shapes like a carp's comb (qu chi) or the characters "之" (zhi) or "玄" (xuan). In such cases, the burial site should be sought at the part where the bend shows movement, which is considered a variant form.

Straight, horizontal, and curved forms all require a depression, a clamp, a nipple, a protrusion, as well as the appearance of new shoots from grass and trees called "mengnie" and node buds, in order to be considered genuine. For a straight ridge, one should examine the direction from which the dragon comes, and look for the "mengnie" on the left or right side to establish an "yi xue" (leaning site); if the ridge is thick and substantial, one may also choose a "zhan xue" (adhering site) (note: a zhan xue should be confirmed by the presence of a cushion-like lip). For a horizontal ridge, one should examine from which side the dragon comes, and look for the "mengnie" on the central position between left and right to establish a "zhuang xue" (colliding site); its form is not strictly fixed, as long as the horizontal and vertical are clearly defined and not confused. All these require the ridge to be flat and level on top, with the two sides having distinct edges (note: having an edge on only one side is also acceptable); it should also be somewhat broad, not narrow and thin like a ribbon, nor flat and scattered, extending endlessly. Flat and scattered forms cannot retain true energy, while narrow and thin forms indicate that the true energy has already been cut off; these details must be carefully examined.

A flat star formation can only form a site suitable for a grave when the terrain is level. Such a site can only be formed when a true dragon ridge rises and falls greatly along its course, and the power of this site is very strong. Liao Jinjing said: "All flat star formations have their spiritual light gathered in the level areas, and the life qi flows in the lower areas. The spirit is collected inward, and the transformation of nature is complete. This is what is called a good site. However, it is necessary for the dragon ridge to be true and unique, with clear supporting evidence, and the flowing water to be in harmony, before it can be considered a true formation. One must be careful and meticulous, and must not neglect this." —— A flat star formation has its refined spiritual energy gathered in the flat areas, and the life qi flows in the lower areas. The spirit is inwardly collected, and the transformation of nature is complete, so it is called a good site. However, it is necessary for the dragon ridge to be true and unique, with clear supporting evidence, and the flowing water to be in harmony, before it can be considered a true formation. One must be careful and meticulous, and must not neglect this.

The various sites associated with Jupiter are considered favorable if the direction is towards寅, 甲, 卯, 乙, or 巽. These directions indicate a strong earth qi and a harmonious form. If the burial is appropriate, it will result in descendants who have clear and refined appearances, peaceful and broad-minded characters, and conduct with a grand outlook. Those born in years of 甲, 乙, 寅, 卯, 丙, 丁, 巳, or 午, which belong to wood and fire, will benefit from this. Those born in the years of 亥, 卯, or 未 will achieve success. If the star body is clear and refined, and the dragon pulse conforms to the superior pattern, it will result in becoming a top scholar and holding the highest official rank. If it conforms to the middle pattern, it will result in passing the imperial examinations and holding a high official position in a region. If it conforms to the inferior pattern, it will result in holding the position of county magistrate. Even if there are no noble patterns, it will result in producing talented scholars with great literary reputation. If the star body is large and turbid, and the dragon pulse does not conform to the correct pattern, it will still result in wealth and a preference for propriety and etiquette, receiving the five blessings, and a flourishing lineage. When a person who is clear and tall is born, it indicates that the earth qi has arrived and the family is prospering. However, when a person who is yellow-faced and thin and short is born, it indicates that the earth qi has been exhausted and the family is about to decline.

Water Star穴 (Water Star Burial Site)

Water is naturally active and soft, and it relies on metal to be perfected. It must be accompanied by the energy of metal to form a site. Metal represents roundness, and water represents curvature. Any hill that has a round head and a curved body is considered a water hill. There are three main types: the upright one is called "Zhengti" (standard form), the slanted one is called "Ce Nao" (side head), and the flat one lying on the ground is called "Ping Mian" (flat surface). Each type must have the forms of a hollow, a clamp, a nipple, or a protrusion to be considered a true site. The next section is titled "Zhengti Water Hill Site Forms." Originally there was a chart with horizontal headings of "Hollow Site, Clamp Site, Nipple Site, Protrusion Site," but the illustrations are now lost. The explanation after the chart states that the various site forms of the standard water hill each have three postures: sitting, lying, and standing. They also have six categories of size, large or small, high or low, fat or thin. There are two body types: looking up and looking down. The hollow site is divided into deep, shallow, wide, and narrow. The clamp site is divided into long and short, single and double, curved and straight. The nipple site is divided into large and small, long and short. The protrusion site is divided into large and small, single protrusion, double protrusion, and triple protrusion. The lower ends of the nipple and protrusion sites also have five categories: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. The left and right arms of the hollow and clamp sites have distinctions in their feet: both feet turning metal, both feet turning wood, both feet turning water, both feet turning fire, both feet turning earth; one foot turning metal and the other foot turning water, wood, fire, or earth; one foot turning wood and the other foot turning metal, water, fire, or earth; one foot turning water and the other foot turning metal, wood, fire, or earth; one foot turning fire and the other foot turning metal, wood, water, or earth; one foot turning earth and the other foot turning metal, wood, water, or fire. These make twenty forms, all considered variations. Each form also has the presence of "Ya Qi" (celestial energy), but due to the complexity of the chart, they are not detailed here. All other site forms follow the same pattern and will not be repeated.

The true water star site is noble and dignified, with complete and harmonious formation, thus being the most esteemed. However, one must also examine the shape of the site: a窝穴 should have a round, clean, and well-defined interior with distinct edges; a钳穴 should have a concealed energy within its center, with both arms curving around it on either side; a乳穴 should have a spacious and open interior, with the nipple being small yet smooth and round; a突穴 should have a smooth and round surface, with an outstanding and distinctive form — only then can the site shape be considered in accordance with the principles of physiognomy. In addition, it is necessary to confirm the clarity of supporting evidence and the proper flow of water, before it can be considered a genuine site formation. One must be thorough in examination and must not overlook any details.

Here originally was a chart with horizontal headings of "Woxue, Qianxue, Ruxue, and Tuxue," the illustrations of which are now lost. The explanation following the chart states: These are the various types ofsite (burial sites) for the side brain water star. The left and right variations are the same, so due to the complexity of the diagram, they are not reproduced again. The main text explains: Thesite for the side brain water star is inclined, with the energy flowing toward one side. The burial site cannot be placed directly on top of the star, but must rely on the "Le Mountain" behind it for support. (Original note: For Ruxue and Tuxue types, the Le Mountain is not necessary.) Although the form is inclined, its power remains the same. However, it is still necessary to examine the shape of thesite: Woxue should have a round, clean interior with distinct edges; Qianxue should have a concealed energy in the center, with the left and right arms curving around it; Ruxue should have a smooth, round top with a spacious and open interior; Tuxue should have a smooth, round surface, with an outstanding and distinctive shape. Plane Mercury Hole Pattern

Here originally was a chart with horizontal headings of "Woxue, Qianxue, Ruxue, and Tuxue," but the illustration is now lost. The text explains: this type of star has a rounded and curved head, with a flat and low mountain face, hence it is called "plane water star," which is also referred to by Liao Jinjing as "plane gold and water grave form." Its shape varies: those resembling lotus leaves, lotus flowers, sunflowers, or plum blossoms are considered standard forms; those resembling silk ribbons, looms, turtles, or swimming fish are considered variant forms. In summary, both roundness and curvature must be clearly present, and there is no fixed shape. This type of grave is rare in high mountains and mostly found in flat plains, resembling the "Luoxing" at the water mouth. It is essential to distinguish carefully—Luoxing is solitary and empty, with no dragon behind it, whereas this type of grave must have corresponding mountains, following mountains, facing mountains, leisure mountains, and surrounding mountains coming to embrace it, making them naturally different. It may form the grave in the center or on the side, and one must find the "opening" area, forming a窝,钳,乳, or突, and establish the grave according to these four forms, without making mistakes. If these four forms are absent, then it is merely a false earth mound or water mouth. The "Luoxing Fu" says: "Water stars mostly appear on flat land, their subtleties hard to describe." Indeed, water's nature is "run down," so flat land often has plane water graves. This is naturally formed by heaven and earth, an inevitable occurrence.

The flat water star pit can only be formed on a level surface. It requires a true dragon that rises and falls greatly along its course in order to form such a pit, and its power is very strong. Liao Jinjing said, "All flat star formations have their spiritual light emerging from the top center, and the life qi gathers on the surface. The spirit is collected inward, and the transformations of heaven and earth are complete, hence it is called a good pit." The refined and exquisite qi emanates from the top center of the star, the life qi gathers on the surface of the star, the spirit is inwardly restrained, and the transformations of heaven and earth are complete, hence it is called a good pit. However, it also requires that the terrain and the coming ridge are distinct, the water pattern and the surrounding area are complete and perfect, the main mountain and the guest mountain are affectionate towards each other, the left and right sides are not missing or sunken, the pit shape conforms to the principles of physiognomy, and the supporting evidence is clear, only then can it be truly formed. It is most taboo for the vital breath to be lonely, cold, and thin, or for the water to flow against the pit: loneliness and coldness lead to decline in descendants, and flowing against the pit leads to the destruction of family fortune. One must carefully examine and not neglect these points.

All the various sites associated with the water star, if oriented towards the directions of Hai, Ren, Zi, or Gui, are considered to be "getting the right place," with strong earth energy and a harmonious form. If burial is carried out properly, it will result in descendants who have clean appearances, clear and open-minded characters, and flexible behavior. Those born in years of Jin and Shui (metal and water) will benefit from this. Those born in the years of Shen, Zi, and Chen will prosper. If the site star is refined and elegant, and the dragon pulse matches the upper grade, it will produce individuals such as the top scholar, prime minister, minister of the cabinet, and the nine ministers; if it matches the middle grade, it will produce important officials in a region; if it matches the lower grade, it will produce officials governing a state or prefecture; even if there are no noble grades, it will result in gaining status through a woman. If the site star is large and turbid, it will result in a middle-class wealthy family with much fluctuating wealth. When a refined and elegant person is born, it indicates that the earth energy has arrived and the family fortune is flourishing; but when a person who is idle and lacks integrity is born, it indicates that the earth energy has been exhausted and the family fortune is about to decline.

The planet of the Earth Star is solid and dignified, with a proper shape. Any hill that has a square head and a flat body is called the Earth Star. It has four main types: the upright one is called "Zhengti" (proper form), the slanted one is called "Ce Nao" (side head), the one with a square head and a hollow middle is called "Ao Nao" (hollow head), and the one lying flat on the ground is called "Ping Mian" (flat surface). Each type must have the forms of Wo (recess), Qian (claw), Ru (nipple), and Tu (projection) to be considered a true formation, as detailed below. The next section is titled "Zhengti Tuxing Xue Ge" (the proper form of the Earth Star burial site). Originally there was a chart with horizontal categories of "Type, Wo, Qian, Ru, Tu" and vertical categories of "Zhong Xue" (central burial site) and "Jiao Xue" (corner burial site); the diagram is now lost. After the chart, it explains that the various types of the proper form of the Earth Star burial site each have three postures: sitting, lying, and standing; they also have six categories of size, large or small, high or low, fat or thin; and two body types, facing up or down. Among these, the Wo type is divided into deep, shallow, wide, and narrow; the Qian type is divided into long and short, single or double, straight or curved; the Ru type is divided into large and small, long and short; and the Tu type is divided into large and small, single, double, or triple. The lower ends of the Ru and Tu types also have five categories: producing metal, wood, water, fire, or earth. The left and right arms of the Wo and Qian types have distinctions in the two feet turning gold, wood, water, fire, or earth; one foot turning gold while the other turns water, wood, fire, or earth; one foot turning wood while the other turns gold, water, fire, or earth; one foot turning water while the other turns gold, wood, fire, or earth; one foot turning fire while the other turns gold, wood, water, or earth; and one foot turning earth while the other turns gold, wood, water, or fire—totaling twenty types, all considered variations. Each type also has variations with "Yaoguang" (celestial influence), but due to the complexity of the diagram, they are not included here. The following categories follow the same pattern.

The true form of a soil star site is dignified and noble, with complete and harmonious creation, thus being the most esteemed. However, one must also examine the shape of the site: a窝穴 (wokou) should have a round, clean, and distinct inner cavity with clear edges; a钳穴 (qianxu) should have a concealed qi within the center, with both arms curving around on either side; a乳穴 (runxu) should have a spacious and open area within the circle, with a smooth and round top; a突穴 (tuxu) should have a smooth and round surface, with an outstanding and extraordinary form. Only then can the site shape be considered in accordance with the principles of physiognomy. In addition, it is necessary to confirm the clarity of supporting evidence, such as the proper flow of water, before it can be considered a genuine formation. One must be meticulous in examination and must not overlook any details.

Although the form is slanted, its power remains the same. Aconcagua Saturn Pit Pattern

Here originally was a chart with horizontal headings of "Woxue, Qianxue, Ruxue, and Tuxue," but the illustration is now lost. The text explains: this type of star has a depression on top, a square body, and a flat surface, so it is called "Aonaotusheng" (Concave Head Earth Star). It is considered genuine when there is a "Le Mountain" behind it, and it is most忌讳 (to be avoided) if the mountain waist is too long—because a long waist resembles the Earth Star encountering water, which indicates that descendants will suffer from swelling diseases. This type of site is mostly formed by a horizontal dragon entering, so it must have a Le Mountain behind it; if there is no Le Mountain, as long as there is a "Xiaoshun Guǐ" (filial ghost star) that is closely attached behind the site and multiple surrounding mountains, it can still be acceptable. For Ruxue and Tuxue, there is no need for a Le Mountain. For Woxue and Qianxue, the site is mostly located on the back of the ridge, also called "Meigǔ" (without bones), and it must have a Le Mountain to be genuine; there are also cases where the site forms from a collision of the ridge behind, in which case a Le Mountain is not necessary. When the site forms from a horizontal ridge, the energy is forced to gather in front, so the area behind the site should be in the shape of a "Yangwa" (upturned tile, slightly concave and upward). If there is a protrusion in the middle of the Yangwa, it is not a genuine site; or if there is a Yangwa but no Le Mountain behind and no surrounding mountains, it is also not a genuine site, and these should not be chosen for burial. If this type of site is genuinely formed, its power is very great.

The soil star's site is characterized by a depression in the center and higher sides, with the back of the site being concave and soft, hence also called "no-bone star." It is judged by the central depression, and its form is peculiar, making it difficult to identify. It often has false appearances, so one must be careful to distinguish. Once it forms a true site, it is extremely valuable. Liao Jinjing said it is "heavenly wealth with a concave head, most favorable for silkworms, grain, gold and silver, greatly beneficial for merchants," meaning it is regarded as a wealthy star. If the star body is turbid, Liao's words are indeed correct; but if the site star is clear and elegant, and the dragon's form is extraordinary, it indicates supreme wealth for a king or noble. Our brothers have traveled through many famous tombs, and all those who achieved high rank and status had soil stars forming their sites. However, one must still examine the site shape: for a窝穴 (nest site), the interior should be round, clean, and the edges distinct; for a钳穴 (claw site), the center should hold energy and the left and right arms should curve around; for a乳穴 (milk site), the area inside should be open and smooth, with the top of the site smooth and round; for a突穴 (prominent site), the surface should be smooth and round, and the form should be outstanding. Only then can the site shape be considered in accordance with the principles of physiognomy. In addition, one must also verify clearly that the water flow is in accordance with the rules, before it can be considered a true site. One must be very careful and not overlook any details.

Flat Earth Star Hole Pattern

Here was originally a chart with horizontal headings of "category,窝穴,钳穴,乳穴,突穴" and vertical headings of "square" and "angular", but the diagram is now lost. The text explains: this kind of star is square and flat, appearing on level ground, so it is called "plane earth star". Liao Jinjing refers to it as "plane heavenly wealth". Any term such as "chessboard", "earth square", "victory earth", "persimmon calyx", "earth jade", "cocoon earth", "spread-out earth", and "jade zither earth" are all alternative names for it. The site of the plane earth star can only be formed on flat areas; it must be formed by a true dragon line that undulates greatly, and its power is very strong. Liao Jinjing says, "All plane stars have their spiritual light concentrated in flat areas, and their life qi flows in low places. Their spirit is gathered inward, and their creation and transformation are complete, hence it is auspicious." This means that the refined and elegant qi is concentrated in the flat areas, the life qi flows in the low areas, the spirit is gathered inward, and the creation and transformation are complete, hence it is auspicious. However, it still depends on the shape of the site: for窝穴, the interior should be round, clean, and the edges distinct; for钳穴, the center should be able to hold qi, and the two arms on both sides should be curved; for乳穴, the area inside should be open and smooth, and the boundaries on both sides should be clear; for突穴, the surface should be smooth and round, and the form should be outstanding. Only then can the site shape be considered in accordance with the principles of geomancy. In addition, the dragon line must be true and unique, with clear supporting evidence, and the water flow must be in accordance with the rules, before it can be considered a true site. It is essential to examine carefully and not to neglect anything.

The various sites of Saturn, when the orientation is towards the directions of Chou, Gen, Wei, Kun, Si, and Wu, are considered to have abundant earth energy and harmonious form. If burial is conducted properly, it will result in descendants who have a robust appearance, broad-mindedness, and a straightforward manner. Those born in years of Wu, Ji, Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, which belong to metal and earth, will benefit from this. Those born in the years of Shen, Zi, and Chen will achieve success. If the burial site is clear and refined, and the dragon mountain behind it matches the superior pattern, it will lead to high official positions such as those of a prince or chancellor, and the granting of a fiefdom. If it matches the middle pattern, it will result in positions such as the Minister of Agriculture or a high-ranking official in a region with great wealth. If it matches the lower pattern, it will lead to positions such as the Salt Transport Commissioner or officials in charge of finance in the Ministry of Works or the Ministry of Revenue. Even if there are no noble patterns, it will result in gaining fame through contributing grain or holding minor official positions related to granaries. If the burial site is massive and solid, it will bring immense wealth, surpassing that of the entire county, along with great fortune and longevity. When a child is born fat and short, it indicates that the earth energy is abundant and the family is flourishing. However, when a child is born with swelling and yellowing, it signifies that the earth energy has been exhausted and the family is about to decline.

The formations of the stars of metal, wood, water, and earth must all have the shapes of a hollow, a clamp, a nipple, or a protrusion in order to be considered truesite and true convergence of vital energy. If there is only the shape of the star but not the forms of hollow, clamp, nipple, or protrusion, then there is no truesite and the vital energy has not converged. In fact, when the principles ofsite are taken to their extreme, the stars themselves become secondary. Why? Because there are indeed some mountains that are straight, smooth, and form excellent star shapes, yet they do not produce good land. We have examined many famous tombs across the country, and most of the so-called strangesite are actually proper in form, but people regard them as strange because their appearances are unattractive and do not conform to the star shapes. This shows that the star shapes are secondary. However, completely ignoring the star shapes is also wrong, so it is necessary to follow the principle of the harmony between form and star shapes.

In the "Book of Burial," whenever the word "form" (形) appears, it mostly refers to the site of the grave, or the "xue." For example, "a thousand feet as a trend" (千尺为势) refers to the long approach of the dragon; "a hundred feet as a form" (百尺为形) refers to the near site of the grave. It also says, "When form and trend are harmonious, it is called complete qi" (形与势顺, 是谓全气) (note: meaning both the dragon and the grave are auspicious); "When form and trend are opposite, it is called discordant qi" (形与势逆, 是谓乖气) (note: meaning one is auspicious and the other is not); "When trend is auspicious and form is auspicious, it is called double auspicious" (势吉形吉, 是谓重吉) (note: both the dragon and the grave are auspicious, so the qi is complete); "When trend is inauspicious and form is inauspicious, it is called double inauspicious" (势凶形凶, 是谓重凶) (note: both the dragon and the grave are inauspicious, so it is called double inauspicious); "When trend is inauspicious but form is auspicious, only one blessing out of a hundred can be expected" (势凶形吉, 百福希一) (note: the dragon is inauspicious but the grave is auspicious, so only one kind of blessing can be expected); "When trend is auspicious but form is inauspicious, misfortune comes immediately" (势吉形凶, 祸不旋日) (note: the dragon is auspicious but the grave is inauspicious, so misfortune arrives immediately). Clearly, the terms "form" and "trend" here refer to "grave site" and "dragon." Careful examination of these statements shows that geomancy places great emphasis on the dragon, especially on the grave site; if the grave site is incorrect, even if the dragon is auspicious, what use is it? Therefore, it says, "Observing the trend and searching for the dragon is easy, but climbing the mountain and choosing the grave site is difficult. If you are off by even a finger's width, it is as if you are separated by ten thousand mountains." These words are truly profound!

Reprint of the "Essential Knowledge for Human Beings" Volume Three, Part Three of the "Heart Learning Unified Ancestry of Geomancy"

This volume is compiled by Xu Shanji, a scholar from Jiangyou, together with his younger brother Xu Shanshu. It specifically discusses "xue zheng," which refers to the evidence used to verify the authenticity of asite. Once a true dragon forms a burial site, it must leave behind verifiable evidence. Only when these evidences are clearly discerned can thesite be accurately located. The so-called evidences include: looking in front of the穴, there should be beautiful mountain ranges, a well-ordered bright hall, and converging water flow; looking behind the穴, there should be towering mountain ranges and the ghost star supporting from behind; looking to the left and right, there should be the azure dragon and white tiger showing affection, with surrounding mountains and protective hills forming layered enclosures; looking below the穴, the lip and carpet should be level and flat; looking in all directions, the "tianxin shidao" should be fully present; and looking at the boundary waters, the upper and lower divisions should be clearly defined. These are the evidences of a穴. Therefore, the method of locating asite must take these as the standards for measurement. If one can carefully observe these aspects, how could one fail to grasp the essentials?

Discussing the confirmation of a site through the front mountain.

Yang Yunsong's "The Classic of Shaking the Dragon" says: True dragons conceal their穴位 in secret, making it difficult to find the site, but the facing mountain opposite can recognize its intention; when the facing mountain is high, the穴 should be taken at a high place, and when the facing mountain is low, the needle should be dropped at a low place. "The Guide" says: This one sentence from ancients is worth a thousand pieces of gold—when the facing mountain is high, the穴 should be level with the eyebrows; when the facing mountain is low, it should correspond with the heart. "The Song of Circular Skill" says: If the beautiful responding mountain is on the left, the穴 should be on the left; if the beautiful responding mountain is on the right, the right side should be chosen. All these talk about using the facing mountain to determine the site.

Therefore, if the facing mountain is high, the site should be chosen high; if the facing mountain is low, the site should be chosen low. If the facing mountain is close, it may oppress the site, so the energy must gather upward, and the "heavenly site" should be sought at a high place; if the facing mountain is far away, the energy is easily dispersed, so the site must form at a low place, either close to the energy of the bright hall or close to the lower sand, and the "earthly site" should be sought at a low place. If the beautiful responding sand is on the left, the site should be biased to the left; if the beautiful responding mountain is on the right, the site should be biased to the right. This is the general principle.

However, mountains that face the site can be distinguished by their nearness or distance. Although distant mountains coming from afar may be beautiful, if there is a mountain in front of the site, it is sufficient; there is no need to insist that it must face the site directly. If distant mountains are in harmony with the site and conform to the proper principles, this is ideal. But if one only focuses on the beauty of distant mountains, it may result in losing the qi and pulse of the sitting site, which is even worse. Therefore, when using facing mountains to determine the site, one should primarily rely on the nearby case mountains that are harmonious. Even if the distant peaks are not perfectly aligned, it does not cause any harm.

In general, true and genuine formations created by heaven and earth will have a nearby case mountain that is affectionate.the so-called affectionate means that when measured by the water city, it is certainly beautiful; when measured by the standard of the direction, it is certainly favorable; when compared with the back mountain, it is certainly appropriate; when examined around, it is certainly without defects. If one is overly greedy for distant mountains, the nearby area will certainly have places that are not in accordance with the rules and not auspicious. Cai Yuanding said: if a beautiful peak is directly in front of the grave site, it is certainly a good thing; but when it is absolutely necessary, one should rely on the nearby case mountain, and not take distant mountains while abandoning the nearby ones. Bu Ying Tian said: even if there are thousands of mountains in the distant direction, they are not as good as a single nearby case mountain. He also said: if one wants to find a true grave site, distant views are not as good as nearby ones. He also said: most people tend to prefer the sharp and elegant peaks of distant mountains and dislike the short and small nearby case mountains, but they do not realize that the nearby ones are correct, while the distant ones are actually wrong.

Zhang Ziwei's "Long Su Jing" says: Just as a nobleman must rely on a desk to handle affairs, if a noble person comes to pay homage or subordinates come to report matters, he would never dare to face him directly and sit on the same level. This refers to the fact that in front of a superior, it is not suitable to have a mountain facing directly, which is also one way of explaining it. However, one should not be rigid in following this, and it is better for distant mountains and near desks to be in harmony with each other. Occasionally, if they are not in harmony, one should flexibly adjust and deal with it. In general, the correspondence between the bright hall and the case mountain belongs to matters outside the gate; internally, one should focus on the burial method in the tomb and the capturing of qi, and externally, one should set the door direction to bring in the refined qi of the bright hall and case mountain. This is what is meant by "Inside hides a measure of gold, outside conceals the mouths of all the masters; four aspects are for you to discuss, the Five Phases should be guarded by oneself." The true skill lies within, which one should keep to oneself, regardless of what others say. For example, the birth site of Li Bagong from Fuliang is a confirmation of this statement.

Appendix: Yuan Yu Zong Yi's description of Li Ba Gong's affairs is true.

Floating Bridge County's Li Ba Gong, named Dehong, studied geography under the county's master geomancer Wu Zhongxiang along with two elders, Hong Shiliang and Shunan, from Leping. Ba Gong himself selected burial sites for his parents and prepared his own ancestral tomb, the "Longevity Domain," by divining. In the year Guiwei, I visited his village and stayed at the home of his descendant Pingfu. I examined all his burial sites. The site was in the eastern town, originally without a local name, but it was known as the "True Martial Sword Form," with the tomb named "Sword Dam." A ridge running from the亥 mountain direction descended straight down, with two burial sites marked at the top, five feet apart, both facing in the direction of Bing.

Among the two burial sites, one is located on the left side, with the case mountain and the bright hall not properly aligned; the other is in the center, with the facing mountain, case mountain, and bright hall all properly aligned. Water flows away from the direction of Geng and Dui. In the field there are two earthen mounds, one square and one round, called 'Golden Chest and Jade Seal'. I inquired about the origin of this site, and it turned out that Li Baba Gong had chosen a mountain plot belonging to a neighbor. The neighbor refused to give it. Li Baba Gong then said: there are two burial sites on this mountain. I will pay to construct them, and you may choose one, while I will take the other as my final resting place. The neighbor chose the one with properly aligned facing mountain, case mountain, and bright hall.

This is not understanding the importance of connecting with the coming energy and capturing life qi, which is the primary concern. Instead, one is merely dazzled by the symmetry of the bright hall and the case mountain. The difference is only a few feet apart, yet the distinction between becoming a marquis and becoming a slave lies within. Later, the Li family enjoyed hundreds of years of wealth and prosperity, while those commoners remained unknown. The subtle mystery of the superior method of qi in burial site selection is truly marvelous, truly marvelous! The enlightened ones can seize the power of nature and change the destiny of the Earlier Heaven, and the key lies here. In the year of Renchen of the Zhenzheng era, Yu Zongyi of the silver county respectfully records this.

This piece of land is located in the eastern town of Fuliang, with a very long and distant approach. Upon entering the site, first spread out the canopy, pass through the mountain gorge, and then have several abrupt turns, forming a high "Jinxing" (Golden Star). Then it breaks off and rises again, forming a "Jinshuixing" (Golden Water Star), and finally settles on a flat slope to form the burial site. In front of the burial site, a long tongue-like shape extends out, cutting down the trees and leveling the topsoil, and the burial is conducted at the "Yixue" (Dependent Site), forming the image called "Zhenwu Zhangjian Xing" (True Martial God Wielding a Sword Form), with the burial site named "Jianqiu Xue" (Sword Handle Site). The Bright Hall, the front case, and the lower hand barrier all have clear forms, and the water mouth has two mounds called "Jinxiang" (Golden Chest) and "Yuyin" (Jade Seal) that lock together tightly. The dragon comes from the亥 (Hai) direction and the site is oriented towards the丙 (Bing) direction.

After the burial, the Li family produced four divine children, three scholars, two marquises, five undersecretaries, one meritorious official granted a fiefdom, and dozens of people who passed the imperial examinations. More than a hundred people entered officialdom through hereditary privilege or by following the regulations. From the Song Dynasty to the present, the family has never ceased to hold official positions. There is another case: Liao Jinjing selected a plot of land on Jun Mountain for the Liu family of Liufang in Leping County. The dragon line formed the "Wang character dragon" pattern, with the shape called "General Sitting Form." However, the Liu family coveted the neat and upright mountain facing the site, and thus violated the burial rules, turning the auspicious land into a disastrous one. The diagram is attached below.

This piece of land is located in LePing County, with the local name Jun Mountain. Its ridge comes from a very distant source, and when it enters the site, it suddenly rises from a flat field and open wilderness, forming a continuous range of high mountains, dominating the area. It spreads out for several tens of li, with the main ridge passing through the center of this spread. After that, it continues with several sudden drops and leaps, turning into gentle hills. Then it turns and bends for several li, forming a "Wang" character dragon pattern. At the entrance, it suddenly rises sharply to form a high and majestic Jin Xing (Gold Star) site, with the site star having a dignified and stable form.

The central star of the site forms a protrusion, with two shoulders spreading out, forming the shape of a general sitting. The Azure Dragon and White Tiger embrace the site with affection, and the Bright Hall gathers the energy of water and air. The case mountain in front is upright and solemn, resembling a headpiece. The surrounding mountains are arranged in order, with flag mountains, drum mountains, sword hills, and seal hills all present. The energy comes from the Geng direction, and the site is oriented towards the卯 direction, which is a favorable place for producing military and noble talents. Originally determined by Liao Jinjing. Although the site has been properly selected, the Liu family themselves performed the burial, and they did not follow any of the proper methods, such as depth and height, adjustment, controlling the energy, and eliminating evils.

Liao Jinjing sighed, saying: "If it is legal, it will produce kings and dukes; if not, it will produce bandit leaders." Therefore, he composed a poem in the Wu Garden: "From the great military tent on Jun Mountain comes the lineage of the character 'Wang' (king), with the grandeur and strength of Wu Gong's sitting posture. What I have done will surely produce ministers who assist the sage ruler, while what he has done is the path of bandits and tyrants who will not end well." Later, indeed, four brothers of the Han surname, totaling eight people, dominated a region, submitted to Chen Youliang, who claimed the title of Han and was granted the false rank of General of Ten Thousand Houses, but ultimately did not end well. Now the flourishing branch of the Liu surname is not this one.

The commentary says: This dragon is a true dragon, and the site is a true site, but because the burial violated the rules, the auspicious land became a凶 land. The difference between becoming a marquis and becoming a slave has reached this extreme, how can we not be cautious! Guo Pu's "Zang Jing" says: If the site is auspicious but the burial method is inauspicious, it is no different from abandoning the corpse. Yang Yunsong says: If the land is auspicious but the burial is inauspicious, misfortune will occur first, this is called "discarding the corpse," and good fortune will not come. Bu Ying Tian says: Although the land is auspicious, if the burial method is often inauspicious, it will ultimately not bring any success. The words of these previous sages indeed do not deceive me.

Local legends say that Liao Jinjing divined for the Liu family a form called "General Sitting Form," using the幞头 mountain as the case. Originally, the ridge should have come from the Geng direction and faced the卯 direction, in which case the幞头 mountain would not appear properly. However, the Liu family preferred the neat appearance of the幞头 mountain, so they changed the orientation to the辰 direction combined with the Yi direction, disregarding Liao Jinjing's advice. As a result, they completely lost accuracy in depth, the precise measurement of the site, and the burial techniques. Liao Jinjing sighed, saying, "I made a general, but he made a thief's head." Later, this prophecy indeed came true.

There is another type of mountain called 'Chao Mountain' which is specially bowed towards the site. The mountain appears broad, graceful, and charming, and can truly be regarded as a confirmation of the site's correctness. For example, the site of Qin Guang Yi Gong from the Dai family in LePing is of this kind. This site is located in the sixteenth district of LePing, with the local name Wang Kongkou. Its coming ridge is very far, entering the site area as a flat ridge. Suddenly, several lofty peaks appear, greatly enhancing the dragon's momentum. Then it turns back and twists to form a knot at the site. The supporting mountains behind are low and far away, entirely relying on a mountain that suddenly rises in the middle of two streams, which are embraced by the streams. This mountain is round and upright, with a broad and graceful face, showing a solemn and respectful posture of bowing, which is affectionate and lovable. It can be used to confirm that the site is genuine. The area below the site is flat, with the Bright Hall gathering the atmosphere and water, and the water mouth is tightly locked, all corresponding to each other.

At first, the master diviner Wei Kezheng of LePing predicted this piece of land for the son of Guangyigong. After the burial, Wei Kezheng predicted that within three days there would be a minor misfortune, and within the first seven days a major misfortune; once these misfortunes passed, long-term blessings would follow, bringing great wealth, equivalent to ten thousand measures of grain. Indeed, on the third day a tiger bit a horse, and within the first seven days Guangyigong himself fell ill. Therefore, Guangyigong ordered people to remove his son's coffin and re-bury him elsewhere, reserving this land as his own tomb. Soon after, Guangyigong died and was buried here. After his burial, his descendants flourished greatly, becoming the richest in the village, accumulating grain in the tens of thousands of measures. There was an old verse that said: "Otters chasing carp run, all the way to Wangkeng mouth; whoever can bury here, measures of gold are counted with a bucket."

On Confirming the Site through the Bright Hall

Yang Yunsong said: When choosing a site for a grave, the Bright Hall must be straight and properly formed. He also said: Where true energy converges, one should examine the Bright Hall. He further said: Whenever there is doubt about a site, first look at the surrounding terrain of the hall; if the hall is truly formed, water will surely encircle the body in a curved manner. The "Zhu Yu Ji" states: The direction of the qi pulse does not matter whether it is slanting, leaning, biased, or straight, as long as it is genuine, one should then verify it at the Bright Hall; if the Bright Hall does not deviate from the water city's bow-shaped embrace, then burying there will produce heroes. The "Mingtang Jing" says: Whether the site is slanting but skillful or straight but clumsy, it is hard to judge which is superior; as long as it is affectionate towards me, it is a true site. All these passages discuss the principle of verifying a site through the Bright Hall.

The method of seeking a dragon involves first finding the qi flow; the method of selecting a site involves first determining the bright hall. Therefore, it is said, "a site must be verified by the bright hall, and the bright hall must be verified by the case mountain." If the bright hall is not upright and does not converge, but instead slopes and tilts, then the true qi has not converged and settled. Even if there is a nice site, it must be abandoned. Wu Jingluan's "Oral Instructions" says: if the bright hall is tilted, do not boast about the site. Therefore, a true site must certainly be accompanied by a true bright hall.

The Bright Hall is further divided into three types: small Bright Hall, medium Bright Hall, and large Bright Hall; the small and large Bright Halls are also called inner and outer Bright Halls. The small Bright Hall is located below the round halo, and it is the most critical part when determining the site of the grave. If this small Bright Hall is level and can accommodate a person lying on their side, the grave should be marked here, and it must not be moved left, right, up, or down; once it is incorrectly placed, the site is lost. The medium Bright Hall is within the Azure Dragon and White Tiger, and when determining the grave site, the Dragon and Tiger should meet here, otherwise the function of dispersing and receiving energy is lost. The large Bright Hall is within the case mountain, and when determining the grave site, it should face the place where the energy and water converge, which is considered genuine. Otherwise, not only is the site lost, but the entire formation might be false. Therefore, the method of determining the site using the Bright Hall should not be taken lightly.
