The Final Section of the Guide to Mountain Orientation for Ten Thousand Years Diagram
The above diagram of the ten-thousand-year chart compiles the favorable or unfavorable status of the twenty-four mountains for each year into fixed patterns. By simply opening it, one can see everything at a glance, without needing to calculate on the spot. However, there are several variations in interpretation. "Three Evils" and "Scorched Retreat" are only to be avoided if they are located directly beneath, but they can still be used as facing directions. "The Year's Evil" and "Floating Void" are only to be avoided if they are facing directions, and sitting on them is not harmful. The old annotations explain that "Floating Void" occupies only one direction each year and only affects facing directions, not sitting positions. It also says that "Underworld Evil" is not to be avoided if it appears only as a single heavenly stem without forming a mutual control relationship. Regarding "Li Guang's Arrow," if there is only an arch or only an arrow, it does not count as a violation. The old annotations also add that if only one position is affected, it is not to be avoided. There is another school of thought that says when a son buries his father, it is not to be avoided if "Year's Evil" is involved; when a son buries his mother, it is not to be avoided if "Month's Evil" is involved. Also, if a funeral is conducted quickly within the first forty-nine days, all mountain and direction deities and evils can be disregarded. These matters should be judged and chosen by experienced practitioners with a comprehensive understanding, without being rigidly adhered to.
The names of spiritual omens are indeed very numerous. If we check sources like the "Yao Xian Zhou Hou Jing" and Liu Hanqing's "Yang Ming An Suo," we find that alone, there are 247 types of harmful omens associated with the mountain direction. With so many names, how can we even talk about seeking good fortune and avoiding misfortune? Therefore, I will follow the commonly accepted practices of the world and weigh their severity, ranking them in order. The most dangerous ones that should not be touched are the "Three Evils" — that is, the Robbery Sha, Disaster Sha, and Year Sha, as well as "Huang Tian Zhi Tui," and the "Sitting Evil" and "Facing Evil" formed by the division of the Three Evils between the sitting mountain and the facing direction. Those specifically to be avoided in the facing direction are the "Too Year" and "Floating Sky Wuwang." Those derived from the heavenly stems and earthly branches and the Nayin sound element include the "Yin Fu Tai Nian," "Li Guang Jian," and the cases where the nayin of the year, month, day, and hour controls the nayin of the sitting mountain. The above mentioned are the most dangerous and must be avoided.
Next in rank are the "Chuanshan Luohou" — old commentaries say this is the official symbol of the mountain — as well as "Pobai Wugui", "Liucai Jinshen", "Bengteng Basi", "Bingfu", "Sifu", and various types of official symbols: Tian Guanfu, Di Guanfu, Xu Guanfu, Tian Guanfu, and Pobai Guanfu, and so on. This category can be briefly mentioned. The old commentaries add another sentence here: if none of the above evils are involved, it is considered a great benefit; if they are involved, it is considered unfavorable. Next are the "Jiangjun", "Canshi", "Lishi", and the paths of war, fire, ghosts, earth, and death, as well as the imperial chariot, imperial dwelling, imperial carriage, imperial axis, Huanghuan, Bao Wei, Diaoke, Fei Lian, Sangmen, Baihu, Su Yan, Su Xing, Da Yin, Da Sha, Tianjin, Zhuque, and Shānjiā Kǔn lóng, totaling over seventy, all collectively called "Zasha". Yu Eshan once said that even if these are involved, one often sees favorable results, so there is no need to deliberately avoid them, referring precisely to this category.
Among the geomancers there is another saying that circulates: if you want to become prosperous, move the three evils; if you want to become rich, move the flow of wealth; if you want to be wealthy and noble, then collide with the master of misfortune. There are also those who say that to remedy a family's decline and poverty, one should use the concept of empty and void. These are merely ways to make their own techniques seem more divine and mysterious. Passed down from master to apprentice, truth and falsehood have always been mixed, so how can one believe everything? For example, the two methods of "Tong Tian Qiao" (Opening the Heavens' Passage) and "Zou Ma Liu Ren" (Riding the Horse Six Nian) both claim to have originated from Yang Yunsong. However, these two methods contradict each other: if they agree with Zou Ma Liu Ren, they do not agree with Tong Tian Qiao, and if they agree with Tong Tian Qiao, they do not agree with Zou Ma Liu Ren. Even according to their calculations, the four directions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You, which are the four cardinal directions, have no year in twelve years that is entirely favorable. If one insists on following them strictly, these four directions would never be usable (the character "water" is a homonym for "eternal" and is a mistake due to similar characters). Methods that come from the same person contradict each other to such an extent, how much more so do other schools of thought?
Using the principles of Confucianism to judge, we may entirely disregard these statements. However, in his work "Xue Xin Fu," Bo Yin said that if there is an error in the year or the day, it may turn a good site into a great misfortune. Chen Tuan, also known as Tu Nan, also mentioned that besides having a true dragon and a correct tomb, the burial should also be done at an appropriate time. Yang YunSong further said that the year and month are like the oars of a boat. Therefore, as a son, one cannot be careless; one can only follow the conventional methods to select the year and month. This is said to be the utmost effort one can make, in order not to leave any regret in the future.
