The Twelve Yellow and Black Path Days and Hours Song

This is the starting formula for calculating the "Twelve Yellow and Black Paths." According to the earthly branch of the day, determine where the Azure Dragon star begins in the hour position: On days of Zi and Wu, it starts at Shen; on days of Chou and Wei, it starts at Xu; on days of Yin and Shen, it starts at Zi; on days of Mao and You, it starts at Yin; on days of Chen and Xu, it starts at Chen, which is the Dragon position; on days of Si and Hai, it starts at Wu. After determining the starting point, follow the order of the twelve gods in sequence to calculate the Yellow and Black Paths for each hour of the day.

The order of the twelve gods counted from the starting point and their attributes of the Yellow and Black Paths are: Qilong belongs to the Yellow Path, Mingtang belongs to the Yellow Path, Tianxing belongs to the Black Path, Zhuque belongs to the Black Path, JinGui belongs to the Yellow Path, Tiande belongs to the Yellow Path, Baihu belongs to the Black Path, Yutang belongs to the Yellow Path, Tianlao belongs to the Black Path, Xuanwu belongs to the Black Path, Siming belongs to the Yellow Path, Gouchen belongs to the Black Path. The day branches and hours corresponding to the six gods of the Yellow Path can be used for affairs, while those corresponding to the six gods of the Black Path should be avoided.

Each of the nine palaces is associated with the Five Phases, flying stars, and nine stars as follows: the first palace of Kan belongs to water, is one white, and is paired with the "Tian Peng" star; the second palace of Kun belongs to earth, is two black, and is paired with the "Tian Rui" star; the third palace of Zhen belongs to wood, is three green, and is paired with the "Tian Chong" star; the fourth palace of Xun belongs to wood, is four green, and is paired with the "Tian Fu" star; the central fifth palace belongs to earth, is five yellow, and is paired with the "Tian Qin" star; the sixth palace of Qian belongs to metal, is six white, and is paired with the "Tian Xin" star; the seventh palace of Dui belongs to metal, is seven red, and is paired with the "Tian Zhu" star; the eighth palace of Gen belongs to earth, is eight white, and is paired with the "Tian Ren" star; the ninth palace of Li belongs to fire, is nine purple, and is paired with the "Tian Ying" star. When arranging the Earth Plate, first place these nine stars in their respective palaces. The Heaven Plate is rotated according to the hour, always based on this arrangement.

The five elements attributes and order of the deities are: the Chief Symbol belongs to fire, the Qí Shé belongs to earth, the Tai Yin belongs to metal, the Liu He belongs to wood, the Gou Chen belongs to earth, the Tai Chang is the transformed energy of the five elements, the Zhu Que belongs to fire, the Jiudi belongs to earth, and the Jiu Tian belongs to metal. In Yang Dun, they are arranged in this order sequentially. In Yin Dun, the order remains Chief Symbol, Qí Shé, Tai Yin, Liu He (this position is also called Bai Hu, belonging to metal), Tai Chang (this position is also called Xuan Wu, belonging to water), Gou Chen, Zhu Que, Jiudi, and Jiu Tian, but they are arranged in reverse order. Each of the six jia ten-day cycles hides one of the celestial stems: Jiazi hides Wu, Jiaxu hides Ji, Jiashen hides Wu, Jiawu hides Xin, Jiachen hides Ren, and Jiayin hides Gui. The Three Marvels are the Star Marvel DING, the Moon Marvel BING, and the Day Marvel YI. In Yang Dun, they are arranged sequentially, while in Yin Dun, they are arranged in reverse order.

Monthly Examples

This is a mnemonic for determining the stem of the first month based on the heavenly stem of the year, used to establish the monthly pillar: when the year is Jia or Ji, the first month starts with Bingyin; when the year is Yi or Geng, the first month starts with Wuyin; when the year is Bing or Xin, the first month starts with Gengyin; when the year is Ding or Ren, the first month starts with Renyin and proceeds in order; when the year is Wu or Gui, the starting point is unknown, and the answer is that the first month must start with Jiayin. Once the stem of the first month is determined, the stems of the following months can be sequentially deduced.

When the time is appropriate, the example is established.

This is a mnemonic for determining the heavenly stem of the first hour (zi hour) based on the day stem, used to establish the time pillar: On Jia day and Ji day, the zi hour begins with Jiazi; on Yi day and Geng day, it starts with Bingzi; on Bing day and Xin day, it begins with Wuzi; on Ding day and Ren day, it starts with Gengzi; on Wu day and Gui day, it begins with Renzi. Once the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the zi hour are determined, the rest of the hours can be sequentially arranged, ensuring the heavenly stem of each hour is never incorrectly calculated.

Najia in burial practices

The method of assigning heavenly stems to the Eight Trigrams in Najia is as follows: the Qian trigram takes Jia and Ren, the Kun trigram takes Yi and Gui, the Kan trigram takes Wu, the Li trigram takes Ji, the Zhen trigram takes Geng, the Xun trigram takes Xin, the Gen trigram takes Bing, and the Dui trigram takes Ding. To determine whether a heavenly stem is "buried" (入墓), one follows this assignment: since Jia is assigned to Qian, the burial of Jia is in the Qian trigram; since Wu is assigned to Kan, the burial of Wu is in the Kan trigram. The rest of the stems are similarly determined by this method.

Post Horse, Robbery Sha

The Post Horse and Robbery Sha are determined by the Triple Harmony Formation of the Day Branch: for days of寅, 午, and 戌, the Post Horse is in 申 and Robbery Sha is in 亥; for days of 申, 子, and 辰, the Post Horse is in 寅 and Robbery Sha is in 巳; for days of 巳, 酉, and 丑, the Post Horse is in 亥 and Robbery Sha is in 寅; for days of 亥, 卯, and 未, the Post Horse is in 巳 and Robbery Sha is in 申. The direction of the Post Horse indicates movement and travel, while the direction of Robbery Sha indicates loss and damage. When acting, one should move towards the Post Horse and avoid the Robbery Sha.

Shen Kong (Empty Decade)

The sixty Jiazi cycles are divided into six periods, each period consisting of ten days. The ten heavenly stems are paired with the twelve earthly branches, but since there are only ten stems, two branches are left unpaired in each period, and these are called "xun kong" or "empty亡." In the Jiazi period, the branches Xu and Hai are empty; in the Jiaxu period, the branches Shen and You are empty; in the Jiashen period, the branches Wu and Wei are empty; in the Jiawu period, the branches Chen and Si are empty; in the Jiachen period, the branches Yin and Mao are empty; and in the Jiayin period, the branches Zi and Chou are empty. When something falls into an empty position, the matters involved are often empty and not substantial.

The direction of the Joyful Deity

This is a mnemonic for determining the direction of the "Happy God" based on the day stem: On Jia day and Ji day, the Happy God is in the Gen direction, which is Northeast; on Yi day and Geng day, the Happy God is in the Qian direction, which is Northwest; on Bing day and Xin day, the Happy God is in the Kun direction, which is Southwest; on Ding day and Ren day, the Happy God is in the Li palace, which is Due South, hence the verse says "laughing happily"; on Wu day and Gui day, the Happy God is in the Xun direction, which is Southeast, hence the verse says "drunk and drowsy". Traveling or getting married in the direction of the Happy God is most auspicious.

Day's Wealth

Each of the ten Heavenly Stems has its own "Lù" position, which is the earthly branch where the stem reaches its officialdom and gains strength. Jia's Lù is in Yin, Yi's Lù is in Mao, Bing and Wu share the same Lù in Si, Ding and Ji share the same Lù in Wu, Geng's Lù is in Shen, Xin's Lù is in You, Ren's Lù is in Hai, and Gui's Lù is in Zi. When the day stem is in its Lù position, it signifies prosperity and wealth. When making decisions, taking this direction as favorable is considered auspicious.

The combination of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches can generate the Five Phases.

The Five Phases generated by the combination of Heavenly Stems are: Jia and Ji combine to form Earth, Yi and Geng combine to form Metal, Bing and Xin combine to form Water, Ding and Ren combine to form Wood, and Wu and Gui combine to form Fire. The Five Phases generated by the combination of Earthly Branches are: Zi and Chou combine to form Earth, Yin and Hai combine to form Wood, Chen and You combine to form Metal, Si and Shen combine to form Water, and Mao and Xu combine to form Fire; however, Wu and Wei although they combine, do not generate a new Five Phase.

Nobleman's direction

The "Heavenly Nobleman" is divided into Yang Nobleman and Yin Nobleman according to the Day Stem: For Jia day, Wei is the Yang Nobleman and Chou is the Yin Nobleman; for Wu day and Geng day, Chou is the Yang Nobleman and Wei is the Yin Nobleman; for Yi day, Shen is the Yang Nobleman and Zi is the Yin Nobleman; for Ji day, Zi is the Yang Nobleman and Shen is the Yin Nobleman; for Bing day, You is the Yang Nobleman and Si is the Yin Nobleman; for Ding day, Hai is the Yang Nobleman and You is the Yin Nobleman; for Ren day, Mao is the Yang Nobleman and Si is the Yin Nobleman; for Gui day, Si is the Yang Nobleman and Mao is the Yin Nobleman; for Xin day, Yin is the Yang Nobleman and Wu is the Yin Nobleman. The direction where the Nobleman is located is favorable for visiting elders and seeking help from others.

The Twelve Branches Deities and Generals of the Earth Plate

The Earthly Branches are each paired with one heavenly deity and one Month General. The Shen position is paired with the White Tiger deity and the Transmission General; the You position is paired with the Taiyin deity and the From-Qiu General; the Xu position is paired with the Sky-Empty deity and the River-Chief General; the Hai position is paired with the Black Tortoise deity and the Dengming General; the Wei position is paired with the Taichang deity and the Xiaojí General; the Zi position is paired with the Heavenly Empress deity and the Shenhou General; the Wu position is paired with the Vermilion Bird deity and the Shengguang General; the Chou position is paired with the Tianyi deity and the Dají General; the Si position is paired with the Tengshe deity and the Taiyi General; the Chen position is paired with the Gouchen deity and the Heavenly Gang General; the Mao position is paired with the Liuhe deity and the Taichong General; the Yin position is paired with the Qinglong deity and the Gongcao General. When making a divination, first determine which Earthly Branch the matter falls on, then take the corresponding Month General to judge whether it is auspicious or inauspicious.

Volume Two

Ten Heavenly Stems Overcome and Corresponding Rules

Among the six Jia (Heavenly Stems) and ten Earthly Branches, the Jiazi (Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch combination) is hidden within the six Wu (Earthly Branches). Therefore, the six Jia are considered the same as the six Wu. When the Wu on the Heaven Plate is placed over the Wu on the Earth Plate, it is called 'Hidden Chant' or 'Fuyin'. In such cases, affairs tend to be blocked and unsmooth, and it is favorable to remain calm and maintain the status quo. The following explains the different configurations formed when Wu is combined with each of the other stems. When Wu is combined with Wu, it is the Jiazi value symbol combining with itself, still called 'Fuyin'. In such cases, affairs are blocked and unsmooth, and it is favorable to remain calm and maintain the status quo. When Wu is combined with Yi, it is called 'Azure Dragon Combining with Spirit', and if the gate is favorable, the matter will be favorable; if the gate is unfavorable, the matter will be unfavorable. When Wu is combined with Bing, it is called 'Azure Dragon Returning to Head', which is very favorable for taking action and doing things. However, if it encounters gate pressure, being in a tomb, or being struck by punishment, good things may turn into bad ones. When Wu is combined with Ding, it is called 'Azure Dragon Shining Brightly', which is favorable for meeting noblemen and seeking official positions. However, if it encounters being in a tomb or gate pressure, it may instead bring about trouble and disputes.

When Wu is added to Ji, it is called "Nobleman in Prison," which is unfavorable for both public and private matters. When Wu is added to Geng, it is called "Chief Symbol Flying to the Palace," which turns good things into bad ones and makes bad things worse. When Wu is added to Xin, it is called "Azure Dragon Breaking Its Leg," and if it is supported by favorable gates, it can still be beneficial for planning matters; but if it meets with unfavorable gates, it may lead to misfortune, loss of wealth, or illness in the legs. When Wu is added to Ren, it is called "Azure Dragon in Heavenly Prison," which is unfavorable for both open and hidden matters. When Wu is added to Gui, it is called "Azure Dragon with the Celestial Cover," and if it is combined with favorable patterns, it brings good fortune; but if the gate it is associated with is unfavorable, it leads to many difficulties and setbacks.

When the Yi (Ghost) is combined with the Wu (Earth), it is placed on the Jiazi (Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch combination) which is the Chief Symbol, called "Beneficial to the Yin and Harmful to the Yang." This is favorable for secret matters but harmful to those in the open. If the gate is also encountering a凶 (malevolent) or迫 (compelled) situation, it will lead to loss of wealth and harm to people. When Yi is combined with Yi, it is called "The Day Ghost Hidden Chant," which is not suitable for visiting the Nobleman or seeking official positions, but only suitable for keeping a steady and peaceful life. When Yi is combined with Bing (Sun), it is called "The Ghost and Symbol in Harmony," and if paired with a吉利 (auspicious) star, it indicates promotion and advancement in official positions; if paired with a凶 (malevolent) star, it indicates marital discord. When Yi is combined with Ding (Emperor), it is called "The Ghost and Symbol Supporting Each Other," which is favorable for handling official documents and allows for all kinds of affairs. When Yi is combined with Ji (Earth), it is called "The Day Ghost Entering Mist," which is obscured by earth qi and leads to confusion and darkness. If the gate is凶 (malevolent), it will definitely result in misfortune; but if it receives the three auspicious gates: 开 (Opening), 休 (Rest), and 生 (Life), it becomes the "Earth Hidden" pattern.

Bing Qi added to Wu, meaning added to the Jiazi Chief Symbol, is called "Flying Bird Falling into a Hole," indicating that all matters will be clear and smooth. Bing added to Yi is called "Sun and Moon Moving Together," which is auspicious for both public and private affairs. Bing added to Bing is called "Moon Qi with the孛 Star," indicating urgent paperwork, loss of wealth, and damage. Bing added to Ding is called "Moon Qi with the Vermilion Bird," meaning that the Nobleman will handle paperwork smoothly and auspiciously, while ordinary people will remain safe and untroubled; if this is combined with the three auspicious gates, opening, rest, and life, it becomes the "Heavenly Concealment" pattern.

Bing added to Ji is called "Too孛 enters the punishment," indicating that prisoners will be beaten with sticks and documents will not go through; when combined with a favorable gate, it brings good results, but when combined with an unfavorable gate, it turns bad. Bing added to Geng is called "Flame enters the White Emperor," indicating the destruction of the household, theft, and loss of property. Bing added to Xin is called "Plans succeed," meaning that matters planned will succeed, and the sick will not face danger. Bing added to Ren is called "Fire enters the Heavenly Net," indicating that going on a journey is unfavorable and there will be much trouble. Ding combined with Yi is called "Person Evading," a favorable pattern, meaning noblemen will gain higher positions and common people will experience happiness in marriage and gain in wealth. Ding combined with Bing is called "Star Follows the Moon," meaning noblemen will be promoted rapidly while common people may suffer misfortune after joy. Ding combined with Ding is called "Qi Entering Taiyin," meaning documents will arrive immediately and good things will go smoothly as wished.
