Charting guides: Qi Men Dun Jia Chart
The diagram of the Earth Plate in the Qimen system.
This is the Earth Plate for Yang Dun One. The arrangement starts by using the left hand to place the戊 (Wu) corresponding to the Jiazi (Jia Zi) in the first gate of the Kan (Water) trigram. Then, the Six Instruments are arranged in a clockwise direction, and the Three Marvels are placed counterclockwise. The specific star that is the "Chief Symbol" and the specific gate that is the "Duty Gate" will be clear. All other layouts follow the same method. The layout is as follows: the sixth gate of Qian (Heaven) is paired with Jia Yin (Jia Yin) and Gui (Gui); the seventh gate of Dui (Lake) is paired with the Ding Marvel; the eighth gate of Gen (Mountain) is paired with the Bing Marvel; and the ninth gate of Li (Fire) is paired with the Yi Marvel. The stars and gates paired in these four gates are: the Tian Xin Star is paired with the Open Door, the Tian Zhu Star is paired with the Jing Door, the Tian Ren Star is paired with the Life Gate, and the Tian Ying Star is paired with the Jing Gate. The Tian Qin Star resides in the Kun (Earth) gate, and the Kun gate is paired with Jiachen (Jia Chen) and Ren (Ren). The next row is: the fourth gate of Xun (Wind) is paired with Jiawu (Jia Wu) and Xin (Xin); the third gate of Zhen (Thunder) is paired with Jiashen (Jia Shen) and Geng (Geng); the second gate of Kun (Earth) is paired with Jiaxu (Jia Xu) and Ji (Ji); and the first gate of Kan (Water) is paired with Jiazi (Jia Zi) and Wu (Wu). The stars and gates paired in these are: the Tian Fu Star is paired with the Du Door, the Tian Chong Star is paired with the Shang Door, the Tian Rui Star is paired with the Death Door, and the Tian Peng Star is paired with the Xiu Door.
The Earth Plate remains fixed, as it is said "the Earth is still." It changes every five days. The Heaven Plate, however, changes constantly, as it is said "the Heaven is active." For example, when it is the hour of Yichou, the Xiu Men is placed on the Kun Palace of the Heaven Plate as the Duty Gate. The Chief Symbol, which includes the Tianpeng Star with Jiazi Wu, is placed on the Li Palace of the Heaven Plate as the Chief Symbol. The rest follow this pattern. There is a verse that says: Wu Zi is in the Qian Palace, the亥 position belongs to Geng; Wu Yin is in the Kan and Gen Palaces, the Chou position is paired with Ren, and the Chen position follows; Wu Wu is with the Sheng Men at the Jia Mao position; the Fourth Palace is Wu Xu, with the Second and Ninth Palaces paired with Shen; above that is Wu Chen, with Geng paired with You and Xin following. Each turn of the plate brings a new arrangement. Twenty-four plates are calculated from the directions, and the eight gates are determined by direction to set the positions for sounding the bell and withdrawing troops. If the palace where the energy lands is off by one, the Eastern God of that direction is used to correct it. This is the true secret of the nine stars, used to dispel dangers and receive good fortune, ensuring complete success and smooth passage.
There is also a rhyme that says: one board flies westward, two boards come eastward, the subtle essence of the winter solstice and summer solstice lies within this. The first and second palaces descend from above, while the eighth and ninth palaces connect through the earth. The hidden places of the second and ninth palaces are calculated from Ding Qi, and the ninth palace returns to Bing Qi. The wind arises wherever the Yi Qi and Bing Qi are located. The third and fourth palaces move past and return to the third and ninth palaces; starting one board moves to another palace. This direction is where the true Yu Nu resides. When the number nine is moved, the path remains the same. It is not for the unvirtuous to casually speak of this. One must beware of those who recklessly investigate these subtle techniques. To seek Yu Nu: place the Zi hour on the 'Duty Gate,' count forward for Yang Dun and backward for Yin Dun, and determine which palace the Yu Nu falls into at the given time. That is the position of Yu Nu.
For example: This is a case of Yang Dun during the first period of the year on a Jia day or Ji day, with the Yihai hour. The 'Duty Gate' falls in the third palace of Zhen. Therefore, the Xiu Men is blocked in the Kun palace. Take the Zi hour and place it on the Mao position, then count in order to see where the Hai hour falls, thus determining that the Hai hour falls on the Jing Gate in the Gen palace. At this time, step forward two steps with your left foot onto the 'Huogai' position, moving like a leopard towards the leopard tail direction, so that neither people nor ghosts can see your figure. This method should be calculated according to the order of the flying palaces, and it is divided into two types: Yin Dun and Yang Dun. For instance, on the first day of the winter solstice, on a Jia day or Ji day, at the Jiazi hour, the 'Jiu Tian' is in the Xiu Men, and the 'Jiu Di' is in the Li palace. On the first day of the summer solstice, on a Jia day or Ji day, at the Jiazi hour, the 'Jiu Di' is in the Xiu Men, and the 'Jiu Tian' is in the Li palace, and so on.
There is a rhyme that says: the Red Path, White Path, and Yellow Path are three paths that if not avoided, even after a thousand years, their effects will not be evident. The other six paths are all traveled by benevolent deities; only when combined with the Three Marvels and the methods of concealment can they be truly effective. This method is divided into two types: Yang Dun and Yin Dun, which are secrets for hiding and avoiding harm. When performing the ritual, one must first clearly determine which path is being used. Among all the paths, the Red Path, White Path, and Yellow Path should be especially cautious and avoided. Otherwise, even if the Three Marvels and favorable gates are combined, the concealment will not be effective, and one will inevitably invite ten kinds of misfortunes. The above explanation refers to the principles of the five Yang times (Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu) where various deities reside on the Heaven Plate. Please remember this; the method for the Yin times is similar.

The Sequence of the Dun Jia Golden Case and Jade Mirror Diagram of Zhuge Wu Hou's Military Campaigns
The book "Jin Han Yu Jing" was written by Zhuge Kongming during the Three Kingdoms period in Shu Han. When the Yellow Turban Rebellion broke out at the end of the Eastern Han dynasty, many heroes rose up across the land. Cao Cao and his sons, as well as Sun Quan and Zhou Yu, all claimed to be superior to Sun Wu and Wu Qi in military strategy. Yet only Zhuge Kongming and the Shu ruler Liu Bei repeatedly went to battle and encountered enemies, being able to move freely between the Eastern Wu and Cao Wei, using regular troops as the main force and auxiliary forces to achieve repeated victories. What was the reason for this?
This all comes from the book "Jin Han Yu Jing." Its origin dates back to ancient times: when the sage emperor Huang Xuan was fighting Chi You and could not conquer him, he fasted and prayed, and was moved by the Mysterious Lady of the Ninth Heaven, who taught him the method of commanding the six Ding female deities. She recorded the methods of Dun Jia for each day and hour within each ten-day cycle, forming eight gates to determine auspicious and inauspicious signs, distinguishing between internal and external forces to determine victory or defeat. These were compiled into a secret text and passed down through generations. Zhuge Liang obtained this text in a cave on Longmen Mountain. He used it to win battles in military campaigns, and generals from the states of Wei and Wu all called him a god.
Zhong Ming thought this book was peculiar and sufficient to be passed down through generations. After that, he personally drew the diagrams: taking the sixty Jiazi days as the main framework, each day divided into twelve hours, and all the diagrams were clearly recorded, indicating the palace where the nine stars were located, the fortune, success or failure of each gate, for use in military campaigns. The results were verified as quick as an echo, so he named it The Golden Seal Jade Mirror Diagram. This book explained the drawing methods in detail and clearly, forming its own school, different from other books on Dun Jia. Therefore, it was called miraculous and unpredictable.
Zhuge Liang once said: This book can be used for military campaigns and is also used for daily selection of auspicious days and travel. It is indispensable. It has been passed down through the ages, and generals who understand military strategy have all kept it secret and cherished it, so the truly transmitted versions are very few. I have studied military science for twenty years, and have read through all the various military treatises such as the "Wujing," "Taolue," "Qibao Xinshu," "Liu Zhi Jinjing," and "Qingnang Suoshu." Among them, only the "Sunzi Bingfa" and this book are one the fundamental and the other the application, complementing each other. It is indeed a national treasure, accurate in every detail.
I am a warrior, not skilled in literary expression, yet I alone have grasped the subtle and profound essence of this text. I dare not keep it hidden by myself. Therefore, I now take out the version passed down by the old man Huang Yan of Zhongnan Mountain, as well as the copy kept in the home of the famous general Di Qing of the previous dynasty, and transcribe it into a diagrammatic form. I have ordered Shi Duans to copy and record it, so that it may be widely circulated for future generations. This way, wise and loyal men with deep strategies can refer to it when engaging in warfare, using it to assist in their military endeavors. This also shows that I am unwilling to keep the teachings of predecessors to myself secretly.
Zhu Ge Wenhou's Military Dun Jia Manual: The Golden Case and Jade Mirror Volume One
Nine Stars Falling into the Layout Method
After the winter solstice, the Yang Dun method is used. The example of the nine stars moving in sequence through the nine palaces is as follows (each day moves to one palace, and after completing a cycle, it starts again on the next Jia Xu day, and the rest of the ten-day periods follow the same pattern): The Jia Zi period starts from the Gen Palace; the Jia Xu period begins in the Li Palace; the Jia Shen period — since Shen belongs to the monkey, it is said that the monkey jumps into the crystal palace — starts in the Kan Palace; the Jia Wu period — since Wu belongs to the horse, it is said that the Jia horse — starts in the Kun Palace without moving; the Jia Chen period — since Chen belongs to the dragon, it is said that the dragon is born in the Zhen Palace — starts in the Zhen Palace; the Jia Yin period — since Yin belongs to the tiger, it is said that the tiger roars and generates wind — starts in the Xun Palace. Each of the nine stars displays its unique function in the nine palaces, and the starting point is determined by where the Taiyi is located. For example: On the Jia Zi day, Taiyi starts in the Gen Palace; the Li Palace is Ceti, the Kan Palace is Yuanhuang, the Kun Palace is Zhaoyao, the Zhen Palace is Tianfu, the Xun Palace is Qinglong, the Central Palace is Xianchi, the Qian Palace is Taiyin, and the Dui Palace is Tianyi — this is the method of the nine stars moving in sequence through the nine palaces.
After the summer solstice, the Yin Dun method is used. The principle of the nine stars moving in reverse order through the nine palaces is as follows: the Jiazi decade starts at the Central Palace; the Jiaxu decade moves into the Water Palace; the Jiashen decade, which corresponds to the monkey, falls into the Fire Palace; the Jiawu decade, corresponding to the horse, directly enters the Mountain Palace; the Jiachen decade, corresponding to the dragon, arrives at the Metal Palace; the Jiayin decade, corresponding to the tiger, faces the Heaven Palace. The Taiyi moves in reverse order through the nine palaces, and its movement must be carefully calculated to be accurate. For example: on the Jiazi day, Taiyi starts at the Central Palace, the Water Palace is Cepheus, the Fire Palace is Xuanyan, the Mountain Palace is Zhaoyao, the Metal Palace is Tianfu, the Heaven Palace is Qinglong, the Central Palace is Xianchi, the Wind Palace is Taiyin, and the Thunder Palace is Tianyi. This is the method of the nine stars moving in reverse through the nine palaces.
The order and fortune of the nine stars are as follows: the first, Taiyi, is auspicious; the second, SheTi, is inauspicious; the third, Xuanyuan, is neutral; the fourth, Zhao Yao, is neutral; the fifth, Tianfu, is inauspicious; the sixth, Qinglong, is auspicious; the seventh, Xianchi, is inauspicious; the eighth, Taiyin, is auspicious; and the ninth, Tianyi, is auspicious. After the winter solstice, the arrangement of the eight gates for Yang Dun starts with the day stem. If the day stem is yang, the eight gates are arranged in a clockwise order; if the day stem is yin, they are arranged counterclockwise. Yang stems include Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, and Ren; yin stems include Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, and Gui. The mnemonic says: on the days of Jiazi, Wuzi, and Renzi, the Xiu Men is in the Kan palace; on the days of Dingmao, Xinmao, and Yimao, the Xiu Men moves to the Kun palace; on the days of Gengwu, Jiawu, and Wuwu, the Xiu Men is in the Zhen palace; on the days of Guiyou, Dingyou, and Xinyou, the Xiu Men moves to the Xun palace; on the days of Gengzi and Bingzi, "the mouse enters the metal land," and the Xiu Men is in the Qian palace; on the days of Jimao and Guimao, "the rabbit resides in the water marsh," and the Xiu Men is in the Dui palace; on the days of Renwu and Bingwu, "the horse moves on the mountain," and the Xiu Men is in the Gen palace; on the days of Yiyou and Jiyou, "the chicken associates with fire," and the Xiu Men is in the Li palace. For example, on Jiazi day, which is yang, the Xiu Men, Sheng Men, and Kai Men are arranged clockwise; on Yichou day, which is yin, they are arranged counterclockwise; on Bingyin day, it again becomes clockwise—this method is also applied for Yin Dun.
After the summer solstice, the method of setting up the eight gates for Yin Dun is as follows: On the days of Jiazi, Wuzi, and Renzi, the Xiu Men is located in the Li Palace; on the days of Dingmao, Xinmao, and Yimao, the Xiu Men is in the Gen Palace; the days of Wuyin and Jiawu first start at the Dui Palace; on the days of Dingyou, Guimao, and Xinyou, the Xiu Men is in the Qian Palace, taking advantage of its strength and firmness; on the days of Bingzi and Gengzi, known as "Red and White Rats," the Xiu Men moves to the Xun Palace; on the days of Guimao and Jimao, known as "Black and Yellow Rabbits," the Xiu Men moves to the east Zhen Palace; on the days of Bingwu and Renwu, the Xiu Men moves to the Kun Palace as if riding a horse; on the days of Yiyou and Jiyou, known as "Chickens Flying," the Xiu Men moves to the Kan Palace. For example, on the days of Jiazi, Wuzi, and Renzi, the Xiu Men starts at the Li Palace. Each palace governs three days, and the sequence changes every three days. For days with a yang stem, the sequence proceeds in the order of the stems; for days with a yin stem, the sequence proceeds in the reverse order. The method is the same as that used for Yang Dun.
The method of using the Flying Palaces and the principles of the palm divination technique are as follows:
The arrangement of the palm diagram and the eight gates diagram is as follows: the upper row pairs the second Kun palace with the Death Door, the seventh Dui palace with the Jing Door, and the sixth Qian palace with the Open Door; the middle row pairs the ninth Li palace with the Jing Gate, the central fifth palace has no gate, and the first Kan palace with the Xiu Men; the lower row pairs the fourth Xun palace with the Du Door, the third Zhen palace with the Shang Men, and the eighth Gen palace with the Life Gate. The method for determining the Xiu Men is: after the winter solstice, use Yang Dun in a clockwise direction. On the days of Jiazi, Wuzi, and Renzi, the Xiu Men is in the first Kan palace. The Life Gate is in the eighth Gen palace, and continuing clockwise, the Open Door is in the sixth Qian palace. On the day of Yichou, the Xiu Men remains in the Kan palace, the Life Gate moves to the Qian palace, and continuing clockwise, the Open Door is in the Gen palace. On the day of Bingyin, the Xiu Men is still in the Kan palace, the Life Gate returns to the Gen palace, and the Open Door is again in the Qian palace—this is the principle of moving clockwise on Yang days and counterclockwise on Yin days. On the days of Dingmao, Xinmao, and Yimao, the Xiu Men moves to the second Kun palace. This shows that the Xiu Men changes every three days, and the rest follow the same pattern. After the summer solstice, on the days of Jiazi, Wuzi, and Renzi, the Xiu Men is in the ninth Li palace, moving in a counterclockwise direction, following the same principle.
The Nine Stars' Departure from Their Palaces Formula
After the winter solstice, use the Yang Dun method and proceed in the order of the trigrams. Starting from the Gen trigram (Gepan) in the first Jiazi cycle, the Taiyi moves in sequence: Taiyi begins at Gen trigram, proceeds to Li trigram (nine trigrams) as SheTi, then to Kan trigram (one trigram) as XuanYuan, then to Kun trigram (two trigrams) as ZhaoYao, then to Zhen trigram (three trigrams) as TianFu, then to Xun trigram (four trigrams) as QingLong, then to the central trigram (five trigrams) as XianChi, then to Qian trigram (six trigrams) as TaiYin, and finally to Dui trigram (seven trigrams) as TianYi. This is the order of the nine stars moving in sequence. Each day, the Taiyi moves to a different trigram: on Jiazi day, Taiyi is at Gen trigram; on Yichou day, Taiyi is at Li trigram; on Bingyin day, Taiyi is at Kan trigram; on Dingmao day, Taiyi is at Kun trigram; and so on in this pattern. If it is after the summer solstice, use the Yin Dun method and proceed in reverse order. Starting from the Kun trigram (two trigrams) in the first Jiazi cycle, Taiyi begins at Kun trigram, then moves in reverse to Kan trigram (one trigram), and continues in this reverse sequence.
The Nine Stars' Auspicious and Malevolent Verses
The first one is 「Taiyi」, belonging to the Water element. Its auspicious signs are: encountering a person in black clothes coming to visit on the road; visiting others or discussing marriage affairs are all very auspicious. The verse says: seeing Taiyi in the gate, this star is also called 「Tanlang」; gambling and playing games can win much wealth, marriage is very auspicious and flourishing; going out without obstacles, and when visiting, one can meet a virtuous person. The second one is 「SheTi」, belonging to the Earth element. Its auspicious signs are: encountering the Death Door is very inauspicious; meeting an old woman crying on the road; also meeting an ox plowing the field, all are not favorable. The verse says: traveling far will be hindered, plowing the field will damage the ox and the plow; if it is in harmony with one's birth star, it is still suitable for inquiry, but if it is in conflict, there will be disasters and dangers; if it appears together with the Death Door, one should pay attention to the old woman's crying and weeping; seeking wealth and marriage, all things are not suitable; at this time, one should hide and stay away from the path, for any speech or action will cause harm to the body.
The third one is "Xuanyuan", belonging to the Wood element. Its verification sign is: on the way, one should meet people, and it is advisable to be fifteen li away. The verse says: when encountering Xuanyuan at the time of going out or coming in, things will certainly become complicated; if it harmonizes with one's destiny, misfortunes will come slowly, but if it conflicts, there will certainly be worries and distress; long journeys will meet obstacles and difficulties, and gambling will certainly result in loss. This is the method passed down by the Mysterious Lady of the Ninth Heaven, and every word is not empty talk. The fourth one is "Zhayaoyao", also belonging to the Wood element. Its verification sign is: one will meet two relatives, and also encounter a woman's quarrelsome words, have strange dreams causing fear, and the neighbor's pot will mysteriously make noise, and the house will emit strange sounds, all of which are inauspicious. The verse says: Zhayaoyao is called the Wood star, and when it is at the door, all things can be accomplished; once it conflicts, travelers will encounter obstacles, and the woman's quarrelsome words will come face to face; strange dreams frequently appear causing fear, and the sounds of the house and the pot will continuously occur. One should use the principle of the waxing and waning of Yin and Yang to determine its use, and act without hesitation.
The fifth position is "Heavenly Talisman," belonging to the Earth element. The rhyme says: "Five Ghosts" refer to Heavenly Talisman; when it is in the gate, it indicates a woman secretly scheming; once it clashes, there will be no good fortune; the person mentioned will be delayed on the way; lost animals and people will be hard to find; mourners arriving will cause sorrow. When this star is in the gate, it is most unfavorable if there is disaster on the way. However, if used for warfare, military deployment, or transporting military provisions, it is actually beneficial. The sixth position is "Azure Dragon," belonging to the Metal element. Its manifestation is: encountering a physician or a heavy drinker on the road, and being able to enjoy games and entertainment on the way. The rhyme says: seeing Azure Dragon within the gate brings wealth and good fortune; whenever there is tea, food, wine, or gambling, one will certainly win; if it is in harmony with one's birth star, wealth will flourish, so there is no need to mention clashes or punishments; it is suitable for meeting noblemen and setting up camps, and all matters will be harmonious and smooth.
The seventh position 「Xianchi」 belongs to the Metal element. Its verification sign is: it is not advisable to march troops or attack enemies. The rhyme says: among the five generals, it is called Xianchi; when it is at the gate, nothing auspicious happens; although mutual generation does not cause damage, if there is mutual overcoming, there will be disaster and danger; gambling leads to total loss, and seeking wealth results in returning empty-handed. This is a true and wonderful secret from the gods, which even fools should know. When used in military affairs, it only causes a false alarm and the army retreats, and the situation is unpredictable like a reverse wind. The eighth position 「Taiyin」 belongs to the Earth element. Its verification sign is: walking six or seven miles, seeing a child leading a sheep coming, seeking wealth will succeed, which is auspicious. The rhyme says: when Taiyin is at the gate, all kinds of misfortunes cannot enter; after walking six or seven miles, there will be friends coming to visit; this wonderful method should be remembered well. If returning troops are needed, lead the horse in front first, because there are hidden soldiers blocking the road, and it must not be done carelessly. The ninth position 「Tianyi」 belongs to the Fire element. Its verification sign is: walking thirty miles and meeting a woman wearing clothes of five or six colors, and encountering someone holding a child, all things will be auspicious. The rhyme says: when Tianyi star is welcomed at the gate, if it is compatible with one's birth star, all things will succeed; every action is smooth, and tea and wine will be welcomed by others; for marriage and wedding, meeting naturally happens; if going out to fight and form an army, encountering this star definitely leads to victory.
Eight Gates of Auspicious and Malevolent Fate Song
The Xiu Men belongs to the Water element and is paired with the "Tan Lang" star of the Big Dipper. The rhyme says: when dealing with official matters or private affairs and encountering the Xiu Men, seeking wealth and visiting officials will be respected by the nobleman; if one wishes to accomplish things quickly, colleagues will also bring good fortune; going out and returning, as well as marriage and wedding, will all have the five blessings. Walking through the Xiu Men means encountering various kinds of food and drink everywhere; traveling will be particularly smooth and powerful; as long as the Xiu Men is in the right direction and meets auspicious deities, everyone will be in harmony and cooperation. The Sheng Men belongs to the Earth element and is paired with the "Zuo Fu" star. Its omens indicate: this gate is a sign of disputes over property and legal cases; for marriage and avoiding loss, walking twenty li will have birds flying towards you, which is very auspicious. The rhyme says: whenever one enters or exits and encounters the Sheng Men, with auspicious stars accompanying, all things can be accomplished; even if there areInauspicious Spirit in between, the wealth obtained will be satisfactory. When the Sheng Men appears, it is most suitable to manage affairs well, with all matters flowing smoothly and fulfilling one's wishes; entering and exiting through this gate will surely bring joy, and as long as one starts to manage affairs, happiness will naturally arise.
The "Shang Men" belongs to the Wood element and is paired with the "Lu Cun" star. Its manifestations are: if one travels through this gate, one is sure to encounter supernatural beings, frightening situations, noisy disturbances, fights for venting anger, and injuries. The rhyme says: if one seeks wealth while encountering Shang Men, even if good stars are present, they cannot prevent misfortune; those around will suffer illness and calamity, and one must also be cautious of disasters. Shang Men often brings disputes, and as soon as one leaves, misfortune follows. Only activities such as hunting and fishing are satisfactory, while all other matters are inevitably filled with worry and pressure. The "Du Men" belongs to the Wood element and is paired with the "Wen Qu" star. Its manifestations are: this gate is suitable for traveling, visiting noblemen, and seeking wealth; if one encounters someone to avoid, although there is a controlling force, it is still auspicious. The rhyme says: Du Men can be used for both public and private affairs, and good stars may appear within the gate; naturally, there will be tea and wine to entertain guests, and joy will lead to success in all matters. Although Du Men has once seen good business, it is never very satisfactory for going out or coming in; if used for fleeing or avoiding danger, it cannot even make use of the original advantage of the Wood element.
The Jing Gate belongs to the element of fire and is paired with the star Liangzhen. Its manifestations are: traveling through this gate is favorable for encountering a nobleman, gambling, competing, and hunting; traveling forty li will certainly hear the sound of joy. The rhyme says: traveling far or entering and exiting through the Jing Gate brings neither destruction nor growth, resulting in a neutral outcome of good or bad fortune; if encountering poor stars or unfavorable directions, one's plans will not proceed smoothly. Entering and exiting through the Jing Gate is still relatively favorable, making it suitable for leisure and enjoyment; hunting and fishing may bring little success, but there is no worry or joy, ensuring peace and safety. The Death Gate belongs to the element of earth and is paired with the star Jumeng. Its manifestations are: this gate is suitable for hunting, setting nets, and slaughtering animals; it is a place where one survives a thousand deaths. Traveling twenty li will certainly encounter signs of death or injury. The rhyme says: if one seeks consultation or makes plans by entering the Death Gate, even with auspicious deities, there will be no remainder of good fortune; if the person is not the cause of a sudden misfortune, they will certainly suffer injuries. One should not go east or west through the Death Gate; generally, one should not speak of seeking fame or reputation. Using it for mourning or lamentation is even more unfavorable—how could a sage spread such nonsense to people?
The "Jing Door" belongs to the Metal element and is paired with the "Po Jun" star. Its verification signs are: this door is not suitable for travel or taking up official positions, and all matters are unfavorable; if one walks six or seven miles, one will certainly encounter strange occurrences or dogs, which can be used to verify the direction. The rhyme says: to search for a lost person, one should go out through the Jing Door, and the escaped person and lost property will still be present; if further aided by a favorable star to resolve conflicts, the escaped person will return in a state of confusion and sorrow. However, the Jing Door always brings a false alarm; if one enters or exits through this door, nothing will succeed; all good things need not be mentioned, and often even at home, things will not go smoothly. The "Kai Men" belongs to the Metal element and is paired with the "Wu Qu" star. Its verification signs are: this door is suitable for taking up official positions, visiting noblemen, entering and exiting, seeking wealth, and avoiding danger; if one walks thirty miles, one will certainly meet a woman or a person wearing colorful clothes to verify the direction. The rhyme says: entering and exiting through the Kai Men is most auspicious, with all matters going smoothly and great fortune; when seeking wealth through entry and exit, one will certainly meet with good fortune, and all affairs will be handled effectively. If one seeks wealth and enters through the Kai Men, one will naturally be joyful, and all matters will succeed; if further aided by a favorable star, one will also encounter food and drink and rejoice.
The Nine Stars Flying Palace Interpretation Examples
The star "Taiyi" is referred to as an evil star in the context of flying palace divination: it signifies military defeat, loss of generals, and subsequent worries and fears; it is especially to be avoided when setting up camps or fortifications; if it appears together with a good star, the evil star can turn into a favorable one. The star "Qinglong" is beneficial for seeking wealth: encountering it on journeys ensures smooth and harmonious affairs; when arranging military formations and campaigns, it ensures victory in every battle; for construction, fortification, marriage, and wedding, good fortune will come all at once. The star "Taiyin" represents the essence of water: there are no obstacles in movement, and the path is smooth and unimpeded; if it coincides with women or feminine influences, it is especially auspicious; for military campaigns and all affairs, everything will proceed with joy and success.
"The Tianyi" is most suitable for meeting the Nobleman: doing affairs and seeking opportunities will surely go smoothly; traveling from this direction brings no worries, and both oneself and reputation will surely receive Heavenly Grace. "Zhao Yao" entering the Central Palace indicates that those who know the way will understand that the general should not engage in battle with the enemy; whether it be a prince or a chancellor, at this time all efforts are in vain and nothing can be achieved. The direction of "Tian Fu" signifies hardship and stagnation: it should be avoided, for entering this palace brings great unrest; if one is willing to make efforts in worship and prayer to resolve the situation, one can get through it, otherwise the "Wu Gui" show no mercy.
The position of Xuanyuan is most difficult when encountered: all affairs will result in injury; one must be cautious of fire hazards when entering or exiting, with hidden losses and visible injuries, and if one goes there, they will not return. "Xianchi" is an evil spirit, withInauspicious Spirit following closely: snakes and tigers surround and trap people; this direction, whether near or far, is only suitable for digging wells for water, and using it for other purposes may bring sorrow. The position of SheTi is prone to disasters: there will be worries on the legs and feet, and the road is rugged and full of misfortune; if one travels from here, it will be inauspicious; military forces should avoid this direction, for once they go there, the return journey will be difficult.
Eight Gates Meet Nine Stars Divination Examples
Xiu Men if it meets with the Azure Dragon: all plans will be smooth and prosperous, gaining wealth and profit will be a hundredfold, and when going to battle and arranging troops, it will certainly break the enemy's forces. Xiu Men if it meets with the Tai Yi: all affairs will be prosperous, in disputes and battles the enemy's forces will be strong, setting up camps and fortifications will ultimately lead to victory, and when meeting the Nobleman or visiting superiors, they will be pleased to meet. Xiu Men if it meets with the Tian Yi star: going out and seeking wealth will be very smooth and prosperous, often meeting the Nobleman who will be kind, turning worries into joy; being invited for meals and hospitality, everywhere will be respected by others.
The Life Gate is most favorable when encountering the Azure Dragon: it signifies meeting a nobleman, and all affairs of planning and decision-making will proceed smoothly. Business ventures will surely bring profits a thousandfold, and one will have no worries about going out or coming in, always smiling. When the Life Gate meets the Taiyi, there is great fortune and virtue, and all desired things will be fulfilled, allowing one to proceed with confidence. Gaining profit and wealth can be expected to be a hundredfold, and movements in military campaigns will face no obstacles. If the Life Gate encounters the Tianyi star, there will certainly be no conflicts when going out or coming in, and both military formations and strategies will lead to victory. All matters will be carried out as desired, achieving great success while maintaining righteousness and receiving good fortune.
The Open Door if it meets the Azure Dragon: matters of profit are repeatedly fortunate, and gains are abundant; when visiting the Nobleman or paying respects to superiors, one is often favored, and any endeavors will not be in vain. The Open Door if it aligns with the Tai Yi: it is most suitable for attacking an enemy camp secretly, and any military campaign will surely succeed, with the Open Door being the most peaceful and secure. The Open Door if it encounters the Tian Yi star: when deploying troops and arranging formations, there is no need for suspicion, and whatever one seeks or endeavors to gain will be successful, especially when paying respects to superiors, one can also receive wealth from the Nobleman. In summary, the fortune of the eight gates depends on the specific matter at hand; it is not only the three auspicious gates of the Life Gate, the Xiu Men, and the Open Door that are favorable. As long as the seasonal calendar is matched with the ten heavenly stems and carefully examined, the situation will become clear.
Ten Heavenly Stems Day of Misfortune (also known as the Five Unfavorable Hours)
The Six Rén Dun Jia Manual says: The so-called "Five Unfavorable Hours" refer to the image of yin and yang meeting and conflicting with the celestial court. As long as the hour stem overcomes the day stem, disaster will occur immediately. The song of the Duke of Yellow Stone says: How difficult is the "Five Unfavorable Hours" to understand? It simply means that the hour stem overcomes the day stem. Even if the three marvels and the three gates are complete, they are still unfavorable. The energy of the sun and moon is damaged, and the situation becomes very bad. In Dun Jia, the three marvels are taken as yi, bing, and ding. Even if they are combined with the three favorable gates, namely the Open Door, the Life Gate, and the Xiu Men, the Five Unfavorable Hours should still be avoided. Any military campaign, appointment or dismissal of officials, taking up a post, traveling far, or breaking ground will be unfavorable, and one must avoid these times. For example, on a jia day, the hour of wu and xu, the hour stem is geng and xin, which belong to metal, and they overcome the day stem, which belongs to wood, jia. The same applies to other days.
The Eight Doors and Their Appropriate Uses
The eight gates each have their appropriate uses: the Xiu Men is suitable for travel and can also be favored by the Nobleman; the Du Men is suitable for hiding and avoiding troubles; the Jing Men is suitable for seeking wealth and often brings profit; the Shang Men is suitable for collecting debts and ensures recovery; the Sheng Men is suitable for marriage and long journeys, both being auspicious; the Jing Men may occasionally bring good news, but it is not entirely secure; the Si Men is suitable for hunting animals and fishing; the Kai Men brings smoothness in all affairs and allows travel throughout the land. The nine stars each have their appropriate uses: when Tai Yi is present, all matters are smooth; when She Mao is present, all affairs are ominous; when Zhao Yao is present, one often encounters rain and wind; when Xuan Yu is present, there are frequent fights and bloodshed; when Xian Chi is present, there are often legal disputes; when Tai Yin is used, one can gain hidden wealth; when Tian Fu is present, it is suitable for hunting in enclosures; when Qing Long is present, wealth and joy both arrive; when Tian Yi is used, all wishes are fulfilled. The changes of the nine stars' auspiciousness and inauspiciousness are infinite in their application.
The Sixth Scroll of Dun Jia: The Golden Casing and Jade Mirror of Zhuge Wu Hou's Military Campaigns
The method of starting with the Azure Dragon (Qinglong) is to count in the usual order regardless of whether it is the winter solstice or the summer solstice.
The formula for starting with the Azure Dragon is: on days of Zi and Wu, the Azure Dragon begins at the Shen position; on days of Mao and You, it begins at the Yin position; on days of Yin and Shen, it starts at the Zi position; on days of Si and Hai, it begins at the Wu position, and there is no need to discuss further; on days of Chen and Xu, it returns to the Chen position; on days of Chou and Wei, it moves in reverse to the Xu position. For example, on the Jiazi day, the Azure Dragon starts at the Shen position, the Mingtang starts at the You position, and then counts sequentially. The twelve deities are arranged as follows: Shen position is Azure Dragon, You position is Mingtang, Xu position is Tianxing, Hai position is Zhuque; Wei position is Gouchen, Zi position is Jin gui; Wu position is Siming, Chou position is Tiande; Si position is Xuanwu, Chen position is Tianlao, Mao position is Yutang, Yin position is Baihu. If the time of day falls on the positions of Azure Dragon, Mingtang, Jin gui, Tiande, Yutang, or Siming, it is considered a "Yellow Path time," suitable for activities. If the time falls on Tianxing, Zhuque, Baihu, Tianlao, Xuanwu, or Gouchen, it is considered a "Black Path time," and one should avoid activities.
Start with Tianyi Nobleman (meeting the Nobleman in the original hour, turning misfortune into good fortune)
This is the method for determining the "Heavenly Ethical Nobleman" (天乙贵人). It is based on the Heavenly Stem of the day in question. According to the rhyme, two Earthly Branches are found that correspond to the Heavenly Stem. The hours and directions associated with these two Earthly Branches are where the Nobleman appears. For Jia day and Wu day, the Nobleman is in Chou and Wei, which are the Ox and the Sheep, hence the saying "combined with Ox and Sheep." For Yi day and Ji day, the Nobleman is in Zi and Shen, which are the Rat and the Monkey. For Bing day and Ding day, the Nobleman is in Hai and You, which are the Pig and the Rooster. For Ren day and Gui day, the Nobleman is in Mao and Si, which are the Rabbit and the Snake. For Geng day and Xin day, the Nobleman is in Wu and Yin, which are the Horse and the Tiger. When the current hour matches one of the branches associated with the Nobleman or the direction aligns with the Nobleman's direction, the "Heavenly Ethical Nobleman" is encountered at that moment. This indicates that a respected superior or noble person will provide assistance. Even if there areInauspicious Spirit (malevolent spirits) or恶格 (bad patterns) in the chart, one will receive help and be able to turn a dangerous situation into a safe one.
The method of determining the截路 (cutting path) and空亡 (void) in time: when the time encounters the void, good and bad outcomes are not formed.
This is the principle of "Jie Lu Kong Wang" (Cutting Road Void). It involves matching the heavenly stem of the day of the divination with the Later Heaven Trigrams, and the earthly branches governed by that trigram are considered the void hours. For Jia day and Ji day, the void hours are in the Kun trigram, which is located in the southwest and governs the hours of Wei and Shen. For Yi day and Geng day, the void hours are in the Li trigram, located in the south and governing the hour of Wu. For Bing day and Xin day, the void hours are in the Xun trigram, located in the southeast and governing the hours of Chen and Si. For Ding day and Ren day, the void hours are in the Zhen trigram, located in the east and governing the hours of Yin and Mao. For Wu day and Gui day, the void hours are in the Qian trigram and the Kan trigram. The Qian trigram is located in the northwest and governs the hours of Xu and Hai, while the Kan trigram is located in the north and governs the hours of Zi and Chou. In the song, the term "Gan" refers to the Qian trigram. The term "Jie Lu" (Cutting Road) is derived from the idea of water blocking the way in front, cutting off the path. If the chosen hour falls on these earthly branches, it is as if one is blocked midway, and both good and bad affairs fail to materialize. Therefore, it is said that "good and bad affairs cannot be realized."
The Joy God Formula (If the Joy God appears within the time, all affairs will proceed smoothly)
This is the method for determining the direction of the "Joy God" or "Xishen." It is also calculated based on the day stem. The direction obtained corresponds to the current direction of the Joy God. On Jia day and Ji day, the Joy God is in the Gen palace, which is in the Northeast. On Yi day and Geng day, the Joy God is in the Qian palace, which is in the Northwest; the character "Gan" in the rhyme refers to the Qian trigram. On Bing day and Xin day, the Joy God is in the Kun palace, which is in the Southwest. On Ding day and Ren day, the Joy God is in the Li palace, which is due South. On Wu day and Gui day, the Joy God is in the Xun palace, which is in the Southeast. When performing an action, one should go out facing the direction of the Joy God, or set the direction of the room and welcome guests in that direction. Doing so means encountering the "Joy God" at that moment, leading to harmonious relationships, resolution of obstacles, and success in endeavors.
Five Unfavorable Hours (when the Hour Stem overcomes the Day Stem)
This is the principle of "Five Unfavorable Hours": whenever the heavenly stem of the hour is reversed to control the heavenly stem of the day, that hour is called the Five Unfavorable Hours. Jia and Yi belong to wood, and they fear the metal of Geng and Xin, so on Jia and Yi days, the hours of Geng and Xin are unfavorable. Bing and Ding belong to fire, and they fear the water of Ren and Gui, so on Bing and Ding days, the hours of Ren and Gui are unfavorable. Wu and Ji belong to earth, and they fear the wood of Jia and Yi, so on Wu and Ji days, the hours of Jia and Yi are unfavorable. Geng and Xin belong to metal, and they fear the fire of Bing and Ding, so on Geng and Xin days, the hours of Bing and Ding are unfavorable. Ren and Gui belong to water, and they fear the earth of Wu and Ji, so on Ren and Gui days, the hours of Wu and Ji are unfavorable. For example, on a Jia day, according to the "Five Rats' Method," the Zi hour starts with Jiazi, and counting forward, the Wu hour is Gengwu and the Wei hour is Xinwei, both of which are Five Unfavorable Hours. On a Yi day, the Zi hour starts with Bingzi, and counting forward, the Chen hour is Gengchen and the Si hour is Xinsi, both of which are also Five Unfavorable Hours (the original text says "Yi day," but according to the method of starting the hours, the hours of Gengchen and Xinsi occur on a Yi day). The rest of the days follow the same pattern. The day stem is like a general, and when the hour stem controls the day stem, it is as if the subordinates rebel against the general, and the general is controlled, making military planning and affairs difficult to succeed. Therefore, this pattern is most avoided in choosing auspicious times in the art of Qimen.
Examples of the Five Phases Generating and Overcoming Each Other
The ten Heavenly Stems each belong to one of the Five Phases and are associated with specific directions: Jia and Yi belong to wood and are located in the East; Bing and Ding belong to fire and are located in the South; Wu and Ji belong to earth and are located in the center; Geng and Xin belong to metal and are located in the West; Ren and Gui belong to water and are located in the North. The order of mutual control is: wood roots can loosen the soil, so Jia and Yi wood control Wu and Ji earth; earth can build dikes to block water, so Wu and Ji earth control Ren and Gui water; water can extinguish fire, so Ren and Gui water control Bing and Ding fire; fire can melt metal, so Bing and Ding fire controls Geng and Xin metal; metal can cut wood, so Geng and Xin metal controls Jia and Yi wood. This cycle returns to wood, continuing endlessly. The order of mutual generation is: wood burns to produce fire, so Jia and Yi wood generates Bing and Ding fire; fire turns to ash which accumulates into earth, so Bing and Ding fire generates Wu and Ji earth; earth contains minerals which produce metal, so Wu and Ji earth generates Geng and Xin metal; metal has a cool nature which condenses into water, so Geng and Xin metal generates Ren and Gui water; water nourishes wood, so Ren and Gui water generates Jia and Yi wood. This also continues in a cycle. In the art of Qimen, determining whether the gates, stars, deities, and sectors are strong or restricted in relation to the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches depends entirely on the sequence of generation and control.
Earthly Branches belong to the Five Phases examples
The twelve Earthly Branches each correspond to one of the Five Phases and a direction: Hai and Zi belong to Water and are located in the North; Yin and Mao belong to Wood and are located in the East; Si and Wu belong to Fire and are located in the South; Shen and You belong to Metal and are located in the West; Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei all belong to Earth and are situated in the four corners—Chen is in the Southeast, Wei is in the Southwest, Xu is in the Northwest, and Chou is in the Northeast. These are the four corners between the four main directions, hence called "four corners" or "four dimensions." Earth is central in nature and is dominant at the end of each of the four seasons, serving as the hub for the transition between directions. Therefore, it does not remain fixed in one direction but instead guards the four corners. In the Nine Stars of the Qimen system, the Kun and Gen palaces belong to Earth, which is derived from this principle.
Year to Month Song
This is the mnemonic for "Year to Month" calculation, also known as "Five Tiger Flight," used to determine the heavenly stem and earthly branch of each month based on the heavenly stem of the current year. The calendar starts with the first month being the Year of the Tiger (Yin). If the year begins with Jia or Ji, the first month is Bingyin; if it begins with Yi or Geng, the first month is Wuyin; if it begins with Bing or Xin, the first month is Gengyin; if it begins with Ding or Ren, the first month is Renvin; if it begins with Wu or Gui, the first month is Jiayin. Since the starting earthly branch of the first month is always Yin, which is the Year of the Tiger, it is called "Five Tiger Flight." Once the first month is determined, the sequence of the sixty jiazi is followed in order. The second month is built on Mao, the third on Chen, and so on, until the twelfth month, which is built on Chou. In this way, the heavenly stems and earthly branches of all twelve months are determined.
