Charting guides: Qi Men Dun Jia Chart

The seven constellations of Qiu, Lou, Jiao, Kang, Gui, Niu, and Xing are the days when the "Great Diamond God" is in charge. On these days, if you go to war, you will surely go out and never return; if you travel far, you will meet thieves on the way; if you engage in business or seek profit, nothing will succeed; if you take a boat, you will surely meet disaster and drown; if you do trade, you will not get what you want; if you dig a well, you will work hard but still not get water; if you accept an official position, you will lose your existing status; if you hold a wedding, there will be harm and loss; if you bury the dead on these days, you will also cause injury or even death. If you want to know the origin of the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of these stars, they all come from the "Secret Scripture of Heavenly Talisman."

The Essentials of the Book of Changes' Numerical Divination

The principles of Tian Yuan recorded in the Jade Register are indeed profound truths, dividing the six Dings and commanding the six Jias, based on the numbers of the Luo Writing. The changes of yin and yang alternate in reverse and forward directions, interweaving and combining with the nine palaces. The art of Dun Jia includes the three elements of heaven, earth, and humanity, as well as dragons, tigers, wind, clouds, and spirits; the earth is born from the center and is associated with divine positions, while the eight trigrams are derived and arranged into eight gates. This discipline contains the heavenly secrets of creation: it can enable one to ascend into the void, in the middle it can predict fortune and misfortune, and be cautious in movement and avoidance, and also conceal spirits and align with the new moon to determine the right time. It is beneficial for travel, construction, and burial. Few throughout history have fully understood it. It is said that the Yellow Emperor created one thousand eight hundred layouts, and Zhang Zifang simplified them to eighteen. The rules are profound. Only those with wisdom who can communicate with spirits can comprehend its subtleties. The forty-eight categories are even more difficult to fully explore. Now I have restored the ancient methods and compiled this book, using the principles of the Yi to understand its subtle meanings, allowing for a deep study of its principles. Those of average ability may not know all the details, but as long as they proceed step by step, the path to the heavens will naturally be long. Among the nine stars, Tian Chong, Tian Fu, Tian Qin, and Tian Ren are the most auspicious. When the three marvels interact and overlap, auspicious signs arise. The chief symbol and duty gate should be most avoided from being attacked. Among the eight gates, the gates of Kai, Xiu, and Sheng are the most auspicious. Generally, one should also observe the seasons. When using the strange door for construction and burial, it should align with the dragon and tiger sites. For starting a foundation, breaking ground, cutting grass, breaking the soil, and commerce, any action should determine the direction. Do not hesitate or hesitate to look back. Sincerity will bring response, and endless blessings will follow.

The concept of "Three Marvels in Command" is indeed effective; when the Six Ganzhi encounter them, it is not a minor benefit. The Yi Marvel belongs to the two palaces of Jiaxu (dog) and Jiawu (horse), while the Bing Marvel belongs to the two palaces of Jiazi (rat) and Jiashen (monkey). The Six Ding Jade Maiden rides upon the two palaces of Jiachen (dragon) and Jiayin (tiger). Additionally, the Three Marvels move upon the Six Instruments, known as "Jade Maiden Guarding the Gate," occurring specifically at the hours of Jiazi, Jimao, Gengwu, Bingwu, Dingyou, and Yimao. These times are favorable for handling private and confidential matters, and court banquets can also be held. If the Three Marvels fall into a tomb, it is generally unfavorable, and one should be cautious of potential troubles. The "Five Unfavorable Hours" are especially detestable, referred to as the hours when the sun and moon damage their brightness. These occur when the hour stem overcomes the day stem, leading to all affairs being ominous and should not be attempted lightly.

The Chief Symbol controls the eight spirits, with distinctions between favorable and unfavorable directions. Jiudi is suitable for concealment and hiding, while Jiu Tian is suitable for displaying military strength. Taiyin and Liuhe can be used for avoiding danger; Tengshe should be kept away from, as it signifies entanglements and disputes over land. Baihu belongs to the west and is aInauspicious Spirit governing warfare and killing; Xuanwu is associated with thieves, so precautions should be taken during military campaigns. If planning is difficult, one can use Tianyi and the method of "Liuwu Bi." In urgent situations, one should take the eight spirits; in calm situations, one should take the eight gates. The so-called "Tian San Men" and "Di Si Hu" are located where? Taichong, Xiaojí, and Conggui are the three places of the heavenly gate, which are secret exits; Chú, Wei, Ding, and Kai are the four places of the earthly gate, from which all actions depart. Taiyin, Liuhe, and Taichang are originally the three auspicious gates of the earth. If further supported by the combination of the odd numbers and the gates, going out and doing things will always be smooth and pleasant. Taichong and Tianma are the most valuable, and in times of danger, one should hide from these places. If one travels in the direction of Tianma, even if tigers and leopards run across the path, one will not meet them.

The most auspicious situation is when the odd numbers, the gate, and Taiyin all appear together, as these three are rarely aligned simultaneously; if the direction and position also match, it is even more favorable, ensuring that every action and movement will be perfectly suited. When the six Bing and the Life Gate are combined with the six Wu, this is called "Heavenly Concealment," with clear boundaries; when the Open Door is combined with the six Yi and overlying the six Ji, "Earthly Concealment" is not much different; when the Xiu Men combines with the six Ding and Taiyin, one understands "Human Concealment," which is the most accurate. One must know that these three concealments are suitable for all matters, especially for hiding and practicing cultivation, and for concealing one's traces.

乙辛為龍休坎羽,龍遁之名居水委;辛乙為虎生門遇,虎遁居山在長棲;六乙加辛休門合,水氣生風風遁威;六乙加辛生更合,艮源坤土龍遁飛;生臨丙月九天上,神遁斯為福世熙;六乙若然加九地,斯為鬼遁達幽機;

Yi and Xin are paired, with Xiu Men falling in the Kan palace belonging to the feather tone, which is called Long, hence the name "Dragon遁" is derived from the gathering place of water. When Yi and Xin are paired and meet the Life Gate, it is called Hu, hence "Hu遁" resides in the mountains and can dwell for a long time. When the sixth Yi combines with the sixth Xin and meets Xiu Men, water generates wind, which is the power of "Wind遁". When the sixth Yi combines with the sixth Xin and meets the Life Gate, Gen represents the source of mountains and Kun represents the mother of earth, thus "Dragon遁" rises and soars. When the Life Gate is present with the Bing oddity and the moon's essence is in the ninth heaven, it is called "God遁", which can bring prosperity and blessings to the world. If the sixth Yi is placed on the ninth earth, it is called "Ghost遁", which can connect with the mysteries of the underworld.

刑擊六儀何太凶,值符刑處與時同,子卯戌未申嫌虎,辰午自刑巳午宮;時日門星有伏吟,休加休上蓬加蓬,惟當守己財貨斂,妄動輕謀有侵害;就中返吟子加午,尤嫌門符相對伍,偏宜散侐發倉廩,動眾興工凶必阻,奇門吉宿若加臨,可免災刑福無補;宮尅門害為財多,門制宮分宮鬼迫,吉門逼迫宜疾成,凶門過迫凶莫測;

The hexagram "Six Instruments Strike Self" is so凶 because the chief symbol is subjected to self-punishment at the same time as the hour. For example, the hour of Zi harms Mao, Xu harms Wei, Shen and Yin (Tiger) harm each other, Chen and Wu are self-punishing, and Si and Wu are also involved. If the hour, day, gate, and star all show "Hidden Chant," such as Xiu Men added to Xiu Men or Tianpeng added to Tianpeng, then one should only remain steadfast and restrain wealth, and any reckless plans will lead to harm. Among these, "returning chant" refers to Zi added to Wu, and it is especially dangerous when the gate and chief symbol are directly opposite each other. In such cases, it is more appropriate to distribute wealth and open the granary to help the people. If one starts wars or undertakes large construction projects, they will certainly face obstacles. If there are auspicious stars and good hosts added, although they can avoid disasters and injuries, they will not bring additional blessings. When the palace overcomes the gate, it indicates loss of wealth. When the gate controls the palace, it means the palace's ghost forces the gate. If a good gate is forced, the matter may succeed but needs to be handled quickly. If a凶 gate is overly forced, the danger becomes unpredictable.

Jia is associated with "rebellion," and Geng is associated with "obstruction": encountering obstruction leads to blocked roads, and encountering rebellion leads to disorder in the rules and regulations. If Jia is added to the day stem or the chief symbol, it indicates defiance of the rules and disorder in governance, with orders unable to be enforced. If Geng is added to the current year, month, day, or hour, it is called "obstruction," which can lead to calamities. If the sixth Jia is added to Yin (which belongs to fire), it is called "Flame Star entering the White Star," indicating that enemies are about to retreat and can be captured. If the sixth Geng is added to Jia, it is called "White Star entering the Flame Star," indicating that enemy forces have just arrived and their movements are unpredictable. If Geng is added to the chief symbol, it is called "Heavenly Master hidden in the palace," and if the chief symbol is added to Geng, it is called "Heavenly Master moving to another palace." If they are added to the same palace, it indicates a battle in the open field; if they are in the same palace with a crime, there should be vigilance against national difficulties. If Geng is added to Gui, there should also be vigilance against national difficulties; if Gui is added to Geng, it is called "great obstruction." If added to Ren, it is called "small obstruction." If added to Ji, it is called "criminal obstruction," also known as "road obstruction." If the day stem is added to Geng, it is interpreted according to "flying stem obstruction."

There is another type of 'hourly pattern' called 'time pattern': the six Geng (庚) should never be combined with the Three Marvels (三奇). If one departs at such an hour, they will not be able to return even with a single horse or wheel. Six Gui (癸) combined with Ding (丁) is called 'Teng Snake Deceit', causing worry and anxiety, with troubles that never seem to end; six Gui combined with Ding is also called 'Zhu Que Falling into the River', leading to involvement in disputes and legal troubles (these two sentences are repeated in the original text, and one of them should be 'Ding added to Gui'). Six Xin (辛) combined with Yi (乙) is called 'Bai Hu Rampant', causing fear, with injury to oneself or relatives; six Yi combined with Xin is called 'Qing Long Escapes', causing alarm and fear, with loss of property, and it is uncertain whether anything can be saved. 'Qing Long Turns Back' is when Jia (甲) is combined with Bing (丙), bringing joy in the heart and endless responses (this sentence in the original text is incomplete). 'Fei Niao Die Xue' is when Bing (丙) is combined with Jia (甲), enabling all actions to achieve success.

The Heaven Plate is active, representing the guest party when asking a question; the Earth Plate is still, representing the host party and the grave site when asking a question. Carefully examine the stars, the palaces, the odd numbers, and the gates, and you can understand the situation. Then observe the mutual punishments and restrictions between them, and you can determine whether it is auspicious or inauspicious. You should also distinguish the directions where the sun and moon are strong and weak, and pay particular attention to the color of the clouds in those directions. For example, if the Tianpeng Star is placed in the ninth palace, and the prosperous and strong month is in autumn or winter, it is most favorable to have days of Gui or Ren, and the time of Zi or Hai, with black clouds appearing in the north, then the guest party will gain advantage. If the Tianying Star is placed in the first palace over the Kan terrain, and it is winter, then the north is actually favorable to the host party. Other instances of the Qimen and star positions should be calculated in the same way. One must carefully distinguish the time of day and the direction one is in. From the hour of Yin to the hour of Wu, there are five Yang hours, which correspond to the five Heavenly Stems of Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, and Wu. It is most suitable for the guest party to take the initiative in traveling, which is favorable for marriage and relocation. From the hour of Wei to the hour of Hai, there are five Yin hours, which correspond to the five Heavenly Stems of Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui. It is favorable for the host party to gather people for planning and preparing, especially suitable for prayers, construction, and fleeing.

The Ten Heavenly Stems and the Six Jia are the main elements of the entire system, with the upper and lower parts connected and divided into opening and closing: when a Yang star is placed in one palace, it is considered opening and signifies good fortune; when a Yin star is placed in one palace, it is considered closing and signifies misfortune. If the stem Ji is placed in the four young months, it is suitable to maintain correctness; if placed in the four middle months, it is suitable to hold firm. If the palace direction is in the four seasonal months, then good fortune follows in order. If there is something to do or a journey to make, one should rely on the Heaven Plate. If building foundations, graves, or secretly planning, one should take advantage of the stillness of the Earth Plate. If the Three Marvels are in the five Yang hours, it is suitable to be a guest, naturally taking the dominant position; if the Three Marvels meet the five Yin hours, it is suitable to be the host, with ease and comfort. The subtleties of the Three Marvels are hard to fully describe: when using Yin Dun, it moves in reverse and is at the back; when using Yang Dun, it moves in the forward direction. Each hour must be divided into the beginning, middle, and end sections. In summary, one must use the Chief Symbol to determine the order. Now, let's further explain the suitability and inappropriateness of the Ten Heavenly Stems: The Yi stem has the virtue of being able to move and stay like a god. When traveling, one will meet with food and drink, and wealth will be displayed in the market. Entering a palace as an official, moving house, or getting married is suitable for being a guest, but it is inauspicious to be whipped, punished, or to be angry. The Bing stem is the Moon Marvel, like the wrath of heaven, melting metal and iron with fire, and military affairs will not arise. Business, entering a palace, and traveling are like meeting a deity, with no worries but only good news. The Six Ding, being the essence of the Jade Maiden and the Yin, can enter and exit the realm of the underworld without suffering punishment in old age. Bowing, seeking help, entering officialdom, doing business, and getting married are all auspicious, with equal parts of worry and joy, and it is favorable for private dealings. The Six Wu combined with the three auspicious gates will prevent misfortune, even if the dragon comes from a distance of ten thousand miles, no one can stop it; a big horse does not neigh while travelers follow, business brings profit, and disturbances will naturally disappear. The Six Ji is the Six Harmonies, favorable for secret planning and hiding one's tracks like a god, even heaven cannot detect it; entering and exiting, holding office, and traveling are all beneficial, and misfortunes like fear and fleeing will depart, benefiting those in a lower position. The Six Geng, when added to the current stem, cuts off the root of the Five Phases, and forcing travel will lead to being bullied and falling into the Heavenly Prison; business will result in half the journey's loss and damaged goods; at this time, all matters are suitable for holding firm, and holding firm is the blessing. The Six Xin, when traveling, will meet with corpses, and forcing out will offend the heavens and be bound by guilt; asking about illness, meeting officials, doing business, and marriage should be avoided, only matters of repentance and judging criminals will be beneficial. The Six Ren is the Heavenly Prison, forcing travel will lead to a state of confusion and distress; intercepting and blocking is beneficial, and it is also favorable for fleeing and escaping; the patient's condition will fluctuate, with only a weak breath left; officials will have grievances and be detained, with all matters being disturbed. The Six Gui is about concealment, with worries and anxieties during entry and exit; it is only suitable for treating illness, fleeing, and seeking immortality; hiding and becoming invisible without being known; if there is illness, the condition will worsen and become chronic.

The Nine Stars' Auspicious and Malevolent Verses

The Tianpeng star governs affairs, and its effects differ between autumn-winter and spring-summer: it is effective for lawsuits and stabilizing borders only in spring and summer. Marriage encounters with it result in mutual loss, and moving house brings fire hazards; seeking official positions is like walking a dangerous path, and encountering doors brings much misfortune. Commerce, burial, settling in a home, and travel are all unfavorable. Only when it meets the Qimen does the fault slightly lessen. The Tianren star is a favorable star, beneficial for all endeavors throughout the four seasons: construction and burial, seeking official positions, visiting officials, business, marriage, worship, and relocation are all auspicious. It governs the defense of a border region, and it prefers strong and vigorous energies. If the opposing side initiates opportunities, it may instead lead to danger. The Tianchong star is suitable for revenge and clearing grievances, and it is effective when spring is warm, allowing great influence and bold courage. It is unfavorable in autumn and winter but prevails in spring and summer; commerce, travel, relocation, and seeking official positions will all face difficulties; construction, burial, repairing directions, and marriage may result in complications. Always remember its power is strongest when all things are in spring.

The star Tian Fu is favorable for self-cultivation and building up one's environment. It is suitable for military campaigns in spring and summer, and also appropriate for clearing and leveling land. Those who are burdened with crimes or punishments will encounter Heavenly Pardon if they travel at this time. Long journeys, going abroad, or holding official positions can lead to achievements. Marriage at this time brings many children and grandchildren, and business transactions bring increased profits. However, it is not suitable for visiting officials or moving residences. The star Tian Ying represents the great path to heaven, making long journeys and banquets pleasant. It is also suitable for entering and exiting, burial, and marriage. However, it is not suitable for moving into a new house, building a residence, worship, or business activities. The host should not easily issue commands to the guest. If the enemy has not yet attacked and the host acts first, it will bring danger. The star Tian Rui is suitable for teaching and making friends. It is not suitable for handling affairs or military campaigns. It governs thieves, worries, injuries to young children in the family, disasters, punishments, imprisonment, and being detained by the authorities. It is very凶 in spring and summer but somewhat favorable in autumn and winter. Even with the help of the odd gate, the fortune will still be lacking.

The Tian Rui star is located in the center, connecting all four seasons, and is suitable for overcoming strong enemies, achieving remarkable feats. It is favorable for using intelligence and setting traps flexibly. When used for worshiping deities, there will be responses; taking up an official position will also be smooth. Commerce, marriage, travel, and construction are all appropriate. If the Qimen is added, everything will be favorable. The Tian Zhu star's direction is suitable for construction, and it is also beneficial for worshiping deities and marriage, bringing brilliance. Concealing one's actions and being cautious are its best uses. However, if used for moving house or military campaigns, it will bring misfortune. Poor planning and rash actions, or haphazard associations with others, will lead to harm. The Tian Xin constellation holds the brilliance of stars and divine paths, making it suitable for seeking immortality, consulting sages, preparing medicine, and all other affairs. It is appropriate for taking up official positions, marriage, moving house, and military campaigns, as well as construction, burial, worship, and travel. It is peaceful in autumn and winter, and also suitable in spring and summer. It benefits gentlemen but is dangerous for villains.

Eight Gates of Auspicious and Malevolent Verses

The Xiu Men belongs to the first palace, its energy filling the whole room, bringing about wealth, numerous descendants, and favorable land. It is auspicious for worship, construction, moving into a new house, taking office, and relocation; all matters will be well handled. Acquiring property from abandoned or deserted families will lead to family prosperity. It is strong in the north and during winter, with numbers six and one. Marriages between northern and southern families will bring distant relatives, and livestock will be given as gifts, leading to an increase in official rank. The Sheng Men belongs to the eighth palace, its energy as abundant as stars, subduing all evil forces under the earth spirit it commands. Wealth can be obtained through welcoming women, or through stored property, leading to prosperity, numerous descendants, and a son of high status within three years. Traveling to other regions for business will result in abundant goods. Marriage, sowing, and construction are all favorable, and it brings extraordinary power to eliminate misfortune and bring blessings.

Shang Men has a short and rapid energy, belonging to the third palace, it is strong in the directions of Yin and Mao, and its tone belongs to the Jue scale. It is suitable for fishing, hunting, capturing, military campaigns, searching for fugitives, and recovering debts. It is especially suitable for gambling and pursuing those who have fled. However, it also indicates legal disputes, verbal conflicts, consecutive heavy funerals, illness among livestock, fires, theft, and eye diseases for couples. Within thirty days, there may be a danger of childbirth complications and loss of vital energy. It also brings about legal troubles, death, and madness, with snake and tiger bites, and instability in residence. Du Men belongs to the fourth palace, with a fierce star nature, belonging to the Wood element, and it is stationed in Yin and Mao. It is suitable for blocking dikes, cutting off water sources, building embankments, and burying foundations. It is also suitable for capturing evil spirits, suppressing bandits, and apprehending criminals; it is especially suitable for fleeing, hiding from danger, and escaping. It is also appropriate for hiding, ambushes, and blocking passages. It can be used for repelling villains, retreating deeply, burying objects, and sealing away private matters, as well as maintaining strict control. However, if it is used recklessly, it may lead to theft and robbery, legal punishment, financial loss, and epidemics. It may also result in snake bites, lightning strikes, scabies, fires in granaries, deaths of people, and the decline of the family.

The Jing Gate belongs to the number of the nine palaces (the original text mistakenly reads 'seven seven', it should be 'nine nine'). It is filled with purple qi, thriving in the south, specifically in the hours of Si and Wu, and forms a fire pattern when combined with Yin and Xu. It is suitable for sending envoys and submitting petitions, capable of removing dangers; seeking strategies, construction, searching for things, and visiting officials are all appropriate. Burial and marriage are considered auspicious but also carry some indication of disputes. Bestowing rewards to officials is as easy as taking something from a bag. Offering advice to seek fame can bring one close to the court, and scholars taking the imperial examination will display clean and outstanding literary talent. The Death Gate belongs to the second palace, being a malevolent star and reverse qi, located in the directions of Wu and Ji, belonging to the Kun and Gen palaces. It is suitable for digging holes, hunting, setting nets for fishing, executing punishments, and burying the dead. It is also beneficial for funerals and condolences. However, if used for construction and building, it will harm the family elders and the plain houses; it also indicates rebelliousness and disrespect, consecutive heavy funerals, loss of property and regret. Any endeavor is unfavorable, and it is not advisable to take action; once initiated, failure will be evident, and officials may be dismissed from their posts.

The Jing Door does not have a transformed energy, its energy isretrograde (reverse), and it is strong in the years of Geng and Xin and the months of Shen and You. It advocates setting up a web of traps, creating confusion, and initiating lawsuits; attacks and punishments come together. It is suitable for pursuing fugitives and ambushing to capture them, and can achieve success. However, it is forbidden for business ventures and construction. It also brings lawsuits, false alarms, outbreaks of disease, military defeat and imprisonment, betrayal within the army, and the death of cattle and sheep. The Open Door belongs to the sixth palace, its energy is good for management and unique, suitable for visiting noblemen and seeking opportunities, and any endeavor is beneficial. Establishing a residence, selecting a site for burial, and repairing structures can lead to promotion in official rank; wealth coming from outside is continuous, horses and cattle are strong and healthy. Raising bees for honey, opening cellars for storage, and smelting metals can bring sudden wealth; the family becomes prosperous, and descendants achieve both fame and fortune. It belongs to the Metal element, is paired with Geng and Xin, and is strong in autumn; servants, land, livestock, and business are all suitable.

The Nine Stars of the Day in the Qi Men system.

There is also the positioning of the Nine Stars of Taiyi: starting from the Gen Palace on the Winter Solstice and from the Kun Palace on the Summer Solstice, both calculations begin from the Jiazi day, moving in a yang direction for the yang stars and a yin direction for the yin stars. The palace where the star stops on that day is where Taiyi is located. The interpretations of the nine stars are as follows: Taiyi Star is favorable for seeking wealth and brings smoothness in all affairs; Shetizi Star indicates disputes and noise at the gate; Xuanyuan Star signifies frequent fear when entering or leaving; Zhaoyao Star indicates bloodshed wherever it arrives; Tianfu Star is auspicious for hunting and shooting; Qinglong Star is favorable for seeking profit and brings many joyful events; Xianchi Star indicates legal disputes wherever it arrives; Taiyin Star indicates hidden wealth in its hidden place; Tianyi Guiren is favorable for feasting and drinking. The responses of the nine stars are most accurate. The most exalted star in heaven is Tingting Star, which is most suitable to be backed by it while attacking its opposite direction. Tingting Star is calculated by adding the month general to the hour, and after adding the hour, the place where Shenhou falls is Tingting Star. The method of using the back and front of the generating god is similar. Another good deity in heaven is the Bajian position, which is located at寅 and申 and combines with巳 and亥 (this is from discussing Tingting to Bajian). To calculate the four Meng deities, use the month general added to the hour, with亥,寅,巳, and申 combining with the four Meng deities respectively, each having their own distinctions; the lonely positions in a ten-day cycle are all in the direction of Ren and Gui, and the direction opposite to it is the empty position. Backing against the lonely position and attacking the empty position, taking the empty position requires using Bajian; thus, even a single woman can resist the strength of a hundred men (this is from discussing Bajian to Guxu).

Volume Twenty-Three

Discussing the generation and overcoming of the ten directions' stars and generals.

The term "Heavenly Origin" refers to the initial moment of an event. The twelve directions are arranged in a circle with a person seated on one side. The Month General is determined according to the used hour in sequence, while the Nobleman is identified by examining the Day Stem. The Heavenly Origin governs the sovereign, father, husband, master, and teacher, representing those of higher rank and elder status. In the human body, it corresponds to the head and skin. The Nobleman governs official positions and the head of the family, also representing subordinates and external wealth. In the human body, it corresponds to the chest, breasts, and navel. The Month General governs relatives and siblings, representing family wealth and the wife. In the human body, it corresponds to the abdomen, waist, and lower leg. The lower direction governs the younger generation, subjects, and concubines, representing descendants and miscellaneous items within the household. In the human body, it corresponds to the feet. If the Day Stem overcomes the direction, it indicates movement among wives and concubines, loss of official position and wealth, and exhaustion among subordinates and younger family members. There will be many disputes with outsiders seeking something, and the person at home should also be cautious of unpleasant matters.

The day stem overcomes the precious spirit, indicating the official position is activated, and both official rank and wealth are obtained, which is very favorable; however, many outsiders come with ill intentions, causing difficulties in the market and official matters to resolve quickly. When the day stem overcomes the month general, it indicates the family's wealth is activated, and seeking wealth is likely to be successful, though the wife may be sick; it also indicates control over the structure of buildings, and seeking wealth through capital is beneficial. When the day stem generates the position of the precious spirit, it indicates relatives visit, and many items are sent from outside, mostly official goods, which are borrowed and passed around, with the approximate amount being like this. When the day stem generates the month general, it indicates the family's wealth source is flourishing, with items being sent in, which can be distributed according to categories; internal and external brothers are harmonious, and one should also understand the father's affection for his grandchildren.

The day stem indicates a direction, representing favor and blessings, which mainly benefit descendants, increase family members, obtain servants and wealth; when asking about childbirth, it shows that the child is mostly easy to raise, and great favor comes from heaven. If the noble deity overcomes the day stem, it indicates the official position is activated, officials can receive their salary, but cannot expect wealth; common people may have official matters but can obtain something from the government; it also indicates throat illness, and although money is obtained, it is secretly lost. If the noble deity overcomes the month general, it indicates internal family theft, collusion, theft, fraud, and accusations and disputes; loss of money and younger family members suffer illness, wishes are not fulfilled; when asking about illness, the condition is critical. If the noble deity overcomes the direction, it indicates matters of separation are activated, money is obtained slowly and things are completed slowly; the master is angry and disaster reaches servants; when asking about illness, there is pain in the navel and difficulty in walking.

If the noble deity is born under the day stem, it indicates a promotion in official position, someone recommending you, someone bringing gifts, and the superior official may be seen; if worship is conducted on time, the ancestors will be pleased with your filial piety; searching for someone will certainly lead to a meeting. If the noble deity is born under the month general, it indicates harmonious marriage, and the gifts received are most appropriate; all wishes and plans will be fulfilled, those who are away will surely return, there is no need for doubt. If the noble deity is born in a direction, it indicates that the deity in the opposite direction will act, and the matters planned will go through many twists and turns but eventually succeed; harmony starts from the master and extends to all, the family servants will work hard to manage the household affairs. If the month general overcomes the day stem, it indicates that there will be good news amidst separation, joy and celebration are determined by heaven; however, seeking wealth will be obstructed, and matters will be difficult to achieve, one must wait until the heavenly禄 (favor) is in harmony.

When the Month General overcomes the Precious Spirit, it indicates the movement of wealth, and seeking wealth will bring profit, but the wife may fall ill; seeking official positions will be difficult to obtain, and diseases will be hard to cure; when traveling, the shape and use of objects will eventually suffer some loss. When the Month General overcomes a direction, it signifies the rise of worries, and worries and diseases will make it difficult to move forward; young children may suffer misfortune, and wealth and servants may suffer damage; disputes will be hard to win, and the household will be unsettled. When the Month General is born by the Day Stem, it is a peaceful star, which is auspicious: harmony inside and outside, the wife resides in the proper place, wealth flourishes, children are filial to their parents; this is a pattern where both people and the dwelling are peaceful.

"The 'General' generates the 'Spirit,' meaning the energy of all generals supports the Heaven Plate's spirit; this combination is called 'Harmonious Stars': asking about all matters brings good fortune, blessings come naturally; sons are filial, wives are virtuous, the family is peaceful and prosperous; the master is willing to spend money to help others, builds bridges and roads, and does many good deeds. 'General' generates 'Direction,' meaning the energy of all generals supports the palace direction they are in; this is a favorable spirit in the lesson: wealth comes from outside, there is support from relatives; joyful events follow one after another, the younger generation produces outstanding talents; this shows heavenly protection, the family is smooth and harmonious. 'Direction' overcomes 'Stem,' meaning the palace direction overcomes the Day Stem, which is 'Official Ghost' in action: officials may have smooth affairs, but ordinary people going out may be involved in legal troubles, disasters, worries, disputes, and grievances all harm people; one can only regret and take responsibility, retreat and avoid, because the Day Stem is directly attacked. 'Direction' overcomes 'Spirit,' meaning the palace direction overcomes the Heaven Plate's spirit, which is 'Official Rank' in action: those seeking official positions and salaries will surely achieve success; but if the spirit position is harmed, even if someone recommends them, no one will sincerely promote them, and they will be repeatedly subjected to legal troubles and blamed by the authorities."

The "fang" overcomes the "jiang," indicating that the main house overcomes all the generals, suggesting there are thieves outside showing themselves: wealth is being wasted, and one wife and concubine will bring illness and harm; also, someone in the family has already begun to think about leaving. As for lost items, they will be recovered again because of searching. When "fang" generates "shen," it is the "Harmony Star": all matters requiring careful planning will go smoothly, servants will be loyal and diligent; the foundation of the house is strong, and the house will need to be renovated. When "fang" generates "gan," it is the "Filial Piety and Loyalty Star": parents, superiors, and teachers will be pleased; the person in charge will be promoted, gaining much benefit; also, at this time, worshiping ancestors and deities will bring blessings and auspiciousness.

Now consider the layer where 'Fang' (direction) generates 'Gan' (Heavenly Stem) and receives the 'Ren Star': the vital energy of the earth is auspicious, good fortune arrives, marriages are harmonious, and all endeavors and aspirations are fulfilled. The family is in harmony, and the household business is renewed. When the superior follows the inferior in mutual generation, it is a blessing from heaven: outsiders bring gifts to the door, indicating gain of wealth; a new member is added to the family, and all affairs are harmonious; those who are away will return soon, and the family's property will flourish. When the inferior follows the superior in mutual generation, it is suitable for travel: business ventures will bring profit, and desires will be fulfilled; those seeking official positions will be recommended and promoted; good news will also reach the home.

When the upper element sequentially overcomes the lower, it indicates external forces overcoming internal ones: outsiders conspire to deceive and plot harm; disputes arise frequently leading to financial loss, elders oppress the younger; illness affects the feet, and property such as land and houses suffer loss. When the lower element sequentially overcomes the upper, it signifies internal forces overcoming external ones: the younger defy the elders, legal troubles occur; entanglements lead to loss of wealth, and there is much verbal conflict; illness affects vomiting, and it also indicates the death of parents. When the 'Heavenly Stem' (干) and 'Spirit' (神) are harmonious, the affairs concern only the immediate surroundings, neither offending relatives nor involving outsiders. When the 'Spirit' (神) and 'General' (将) are harmonious, it signifies good relations among relatives, and matters can be entrusted to relatives for handling.

The term "Jiang" (将) and "Fang" (方) being in a harmonious relationship indicates that the matter should be related to friends, as one's actions in advancing or retreating depend on friends for success. When the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch are in harmony, it refers to siblings, indicating that plans are not solid, but rather fellow peers moving together. If all four elements are in harmony, the family relationships become layered and confused, with the younger surpassing the elder, evil overpowering righteousness, and disorder in the hierarchy, which is a great凶 (auspicious) omen, with no good prospects, and calamities and punishments coming together. When "Shen" (神) combines with "Gan" (干), it is called "Guanhe" (官合) (official harmony): scholars should expect success in examinations and gain honor in the court; ordinary people involved in legal matters may be dragged into official troubles, and even minor endeavors are likely to fail.

The "Shen" and "Jiang" combine to form "Zhenghe": marriage will succeed, all matters will proceed smoothly, and one will receive help from friends and neighbors. However, this is unfavorable for illness, as the condition will persist until autumn before worsening in winter. When "Jiang" combines with "Fang," it is called "Yaohe": the matter concerns distant places, marriage will be completed the following year, affairs will be delayed, and the sick person will be unable to move, lying on their back. Matters will be initiated by the younger generation and accepted by the elders. When "Gan" combines with "Jiang," it is called "Ge": there will be obstacles and vigilance both inside and outside, and all matters of receiving and sending will be delayed. When "Fang" combines with "Shen," the matter will take years to resolve, with the younger generation offending the elders, and the matter will only be settled later. When "Fang" combines with "Gan," it indicates that others are scheming against oneself, and there will be disputes within the household. In summary, the Three Marvels, the Nine Palace directions, the Eight Doors, and the various generals must be evaluated according to the specific situation at any given time; one should not rely on fixed interpretations.

When determining the strength and decline, one must refer to the Five Phases and their relationships of generation and overcoming. Those of the same type as me are called "prosperous," what I generate is called "strong," what generates me is called "rest," and this position falls under wealth and officialdom. What I overcome is called "captured," and what overcomes me is called "death," from which the ghosts and generals are distinguished. The "death" position falling under parents must be considered in terms of severity. IfInauspicious Spirit have vitality, they become great calamities; if they lack vitality, they are only minor troubles. A great auspicious star when prosperous surpasses a minor auspicious star; but if an auspicious star lacks vitality, it is actually less effective than a minor star. If an auspicious dwelling is exactly in its prosperous and strong phase, then everything will be successful and achievements can be expected. At this stage, there is no need to consider the compatibility of one's true birth and body palace, nor should one take into account the evil stars and凶将 that each family dislikes. Even great evils like "official symbol" and "great age" must submit; only when one can subdue凶煞 and command凶神 to serve one's purpose will the effectiveness truly manifest.

When the layout is used in the position of 'flowing wealth', wealth will immediately come into motion; if it is in the position of 'void', prosperity can still be seen in emptiness. If it encounters the atmosphere of weakness and confinement, then I advise you not to proceed further. The author humbly says: now I deduce the numerical principles of the layout and the hexagram, which change constantly, and in this way the great path becomes evident. Taking 'chief symbol' as the main thread and 'duty gate' as the detail: the nine stars under the chief symbol are the main framework, and the eight gates under the duty gate are the details. This entire process is based on the mathematical tradition of the Western Mountain Master, elaborated thoroughly. The eight gates correspond to the outer hexagram, and the nine palaces correspond to the inner hexagram; the 'duty gate' governs the time, and the main hexagram is thus derived. Flying lines are revealed externally, and they judge current affairs; hidden lines are concealed below, and they need to be examined later.

The reverse trigram should be taken according to the relative positions of the Earlier Heaven Trigrams, to observe the movement and presence or absence of the opponent. The mutual trigram is used to examine matters concerning the future and descendants. When using a hexagram, one should determine whether it is prosperous and strong or weak and confined. If the line is harmed or attacked, one should seek the deity that generates and supports it; if it is in a state of decline but encounters support, the same method applies. These two chapters clearly categorize various types of divination, so readers should thoroughly study and understand each point. A person's native destiny falls within the Six Instruments. Starting from Jiazi, the year of birth is calculated, with the native destiny as the starting point. In the native destiny palace, Jiazi is used as the beginning. For Yang Dun, it proceeds in a clockwise direction, while for Yin Dun, it proceeds counterclockwise, circulating through the nine palaces.

When one's destiny and the year of movement fall into a particular palace, one should follow the principles of that palace for divination. In this way, a person's nature and the rise and fall of family fortune can be calculated. Among the three Yis, the "Lian Shan," "Gui Zang," and "Zhou Yi," the "Zhou Yi" is still the main focus. The variation in divination methods should be sought in books like Zhu Xi's "Yi Xue Ming Liu." The phrase "three variations and profound inquiry into the subtle" lies entirely in one's own effort. To achieve deep understanding and practical application, one must sincerely seek truth. If one constantly remembers and maintains this sincere heart, one can gradually progress and reach the highest level of cultivation. The above verse uses the principles of the Qi Men to deduce the hexagrams and lines of the "Zhou Yi."

The essential secrets of the Qimen (Mysterious Gate) divination in the art of palm reading.

The诀 says, "The mystery of the Qianmen lies on the nine palaces around the palm," referring to the mnemonic "edge nine palaces" where the nine palaces are arranged around the palm and calculated with finger joints. "The retreat of the six instruments follows the order of the three marvels" means that the six instruments and three marvels are arranged in two ways, either in order or reverse. In Yang Dun, the six instruments are arranged in order, with Jiazi hidden in Wu, Jiaxu hidden in Ji, Jiashen hidden in Geng, Jiawu hidden in Xin, Jiachen hidden in Ren, and Jiayin hidden in Gui. The three marvels are arranged in reverse order, starting with the star marvel Ding, then the moon marvel Bing, and the day marvel Yi. In Yin Dun, the six instruments are arranged in reverse and the three marvels in order. "The palace, domain, nine stars, and eight gates change with the change of the Jia cycle" means that the palace, domain, nine stars, and eight gates all change according to the Jia cycle. For example, in Yang Dun two domains, start from the second palace of the坤 in the edge nine palaces with Jiazi, count continuously until the time of the event, and determine which palace the Jia cycle head falls on in that ten-day period. Then take the nine star and eight gate of that palace, the star is called "value symbol" and the gate is called "duty gate."

"The day and hour must follow the five rats' method" refers to the "five rats' method" for determining the hour stem based on the day stem. On Jia day and Ji day, the hour starts from Jiazi; on Yi day and Geng day, it starts from Bingzi; on Bing day and Xin day, it starts from Wuzi; on Ding day and Ren day, it starts from Gengzi; and on Wu day and Gui day, it starts from Renzi. This is the correct method. "First determine the symbol and gate of the first jia period" means first use the previous method to find where the symbol head falls in the first jia period, the nine stars in that palace are the "chief symbol," and the eight gates in that palace are the "duty gate." "Then find the palace where the hour falls" means next determine which palace the hour falls into, and add the duty gate to that palace to form the gate used for that hour.

When checking which palace the heavenly stem of the hour falls into, one should determine the palace where the heavenly stem of the hour is located. The method is: starting from Jiazi, count until reaching the beginning of the current ten-day cycle (shi) and the head of the cycle. Then, on the palm, count through the nine palaces sequentially until reaching the palace where Jia is located. The palace not occupied by the Six Instruments is where the Three Marvels are located. In Yang Dun, the remaining palace is arranged in the order of Bing, Ding, and Yi. In Yin Dun, the order is Yi, Bing, and Ding. Then, starting from the palace where Jiazi begins, sequentially place the Six Instruments: Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui. The palace where the heavenly stem of the hour falls is where the "Chief Symbol" is located. The palaces where Yi, Bing, and Ding (the Three Marvels) are located are also determined in this way.

"The principle of 'remembering the number of the palace, the nine stars, and the eight gates' requires that the number of the palace, the nine stars, and the eight gates be remembered accurately and clearly, and then the layout of the chart is established. Each of the eight trigrams has a fixed position; even when divided into Yang Dun or Yin Dun, the positions of the trigrams do not change. The nine stars originally have fixed positions in the palaces, but they must move together with the 'chief symbol'. The specific method is: starting from the Zi hour, count to the beginning of the current Jiazi cycle, and use this to determine the nine stars. Then count further to the hour of the event, which determines the eight gates. For example, starting from the palace of Jiazi, count to the palace of Wu, which is the meaning of this."

"By flying the chief symbol and duty gate through the nine palaces," refers to moving the chief symbol and duty gate in order through the nine palaces on the palm; after flying through once, the favorable and unfavorable positions of the qimen (military astrology) become clear. "Resting the rest at the second palace starting from the second" means that for a yang dun (yang movement) second layout on a Jiazi day and Yichou hour, the xiu men (resting gate) stops at the kun second palace, and this xiu men is the "duty gate" of the current hour. "The tian ren star stays at the third palace starting from the third" means that the tian ren star stays at the zhen third palace, and the chief symbol starts counting from the third palace. "Stars, marvels, and gates combined are considered as marvels" means that the nine stars, three marvels, and eight gates must all be compatible for the layout to be usable. "The eight gates and their heavenly stems and earthly branches are added to the earth plate" means that the eight gates along with their associated heavenly stems and earthly branches are added to the earth plate, and they should be mutually generating for it to be favorable. "Judging good and bad based on rest, strength, burial, and being overcome" refers to determining good or bad fortune based on the states of rest, strength, burial, and being overcome. This is a secret formula of the immortals, and even if it were worth a thousand gold pieces, it would not be easily passed on to others.

This is the layout diagram for the Flying Nine Palaces on the palm. The circle represents a joint on the palm. The top row, from left to right, is the Second Palace, Seventh Palace, and Sixth Palace. The middle row is the Ninth Palace, Fifth Palace, and First Palace. The bottom row is the Fourth Palace, Third Palace, and Eighth Palace. When performing the calculation, one follows this order to rotate the palaces on the palm, which is the method referred to as "simply moving the symbol through the nine palaces." It differs from the conventional arrangement of the Luo Writing, "nine on top, one below, three on the left, seven on the right." This is a special arrangement used specifically in palm divination. One must memorize it to avoid making mistakes in the palace positions.
