Three Marvels and Eight Gates
This is the mnemonic for the Three Marvels and Eight Doors being restricted: when the Yi Qi reaches the sixth and seventh palaces, it naturally faces difficulties; when Bing Qi and Ding Qi are in the first palace, they are not suitable for use. The Tian Zhu and Tian Xin stars arriving in the ninth palace are also difficult to use, and when Jing Men and Open Door are in this position, they cannot advance. When Tian Ying Star and Jing Men fall into the Kan Palace, it is certain to cause worry. When Xiu Men meets the second and eighth palaces, this is the first thing to avoid. When Si Men and Sheng Men are with Tian Rui, Tian Ren, and Tian Qin in the third and fourth palaces, and when Tian Chong and Shang Men are in the sixth and seventh palaces, these are definite prohibitions. Du Men and Tian Fu should also be aware of avoiding the sixth and seventh palaces. If someone can understand these points, they have grasped the heavenly gate.
Door Obstruction Song
This is the rhyme for the forced gates: the Jing Gate and Open Door belong to metal; if they fall into the wood positions of the third and fourth palaces, they are forced. The Xiu Gate belongs to water; if it is in the fire position of the ninth palace, it is forced. The Shang Gate and Du Gate belong to wood; if they fall into the earth positions of the second and eighth palaces, they are forced. The Sheng Gate and Si Gate belong to earth; if they fall into the water position of the first palace, they are forced. The Jing Gate belongs to fire; if it falls into the metal positions of the sixth and seventh palaces, it is also forced. Whenever a favorable gate is forced, good things cannot come to pass; when an unfavorable gate is forced, misfortunes abound.
The Three Marvels Enter the Tomb Song
This is the mnemonic for the Three Marvels entering the tomb: When the Three Marvels enter the tomb, nothing is suitable. The Yi Marvel and Bing Marvel entering the Qian trigram signify entering the tomb, so one should avoid all activities. The Ding Marvel entering the Wei earth tomb and being in the Gen trigram's earth position is the same. Whenever these situations occur, no matter what one intends to do, it is best to give up.
The Odd Gate Auspicious Patterns
“天遁”者,生門主興隆合丙奇,臨下六丁是也,此遁得月華之蔽,宜行兵、獻策、攝王侯之權,百事生旺。又開門與六丙亦相同,宜祭禱天神。“地遁”者,開門合乙奇,臨地下六己是也,此遁得日精之蔽,宜安葬、埋伏、出門、造屋一切皆吉。
The so-called "Heavenly Concealment" refers to a situation where the Life Gate is in charge of prosperity energy, combining with Bing Qi, and the lower part is over the Earth Plate's Li Ding. This concealment receives the energy of the moon's light to conceal forms and traces, suitable for military operations, offering strategies to superiors, and temporarily assuming the authority of kings and dukes, with all affairs taking place in a prosperous and flourishing place. Additionally, the combination of the Open Door with Li Bing is similar in principle, suitable for worship and prayers to heaven deities. The so-called "Earthly Concealment" refers to a situation where the Open Door combines with Yi Qi, and the lower part is over the Earth Plate's Li Ji. This concealment receives the energy of the sun's light to conceal forms and traces, suitable for burial, ambush, traveling, and building houses, with everything being auspicious.
“人遁”者,休門與丁奇合太陰是也,此遁得星精之蔽,宜密探賊營、隱跡、謁貴、招賢、求親、經營、求將、對敵、盟誓,吉;百事和集。
The so-called "person遁" (person concealment) is a configuration where Xiu Men (Rest Gate) combines with Ding Qi (Spirit Star) and meets the "Tai Yin" (Great Yin). In this遁, the star energy conceals the form and traces, making it suitable for secretly investigating the enemy's camp, concealing one's movements, visiting the Nobleman, recruiting talented people, discussing marriage proposals, starting business, seeking capable generals, facing enemies in battle, and making blood oaths. All these affairs are auspicious, and everything proceeds smoothly and harmoniously.
The so-called "Wind遁" (Wind Deception) refers to a situation where the Yi Qi (Yi) and the Xiu Men (Gate of Rest), Open Door, and Life Gate are aligned with the Xun Palace. The Open Door paired with Bing Qi (Bing) also aligns with the Xun Palace. At this time, the wind comes from the Northwest and is called "Heavenly Gang Wind." It is favorable to attack the enemy with the wind at one's back: one can quietly absorb the wind and spray it onto the banners, or use burning incense and have soldiers listen to music to calm the army's morale. In this way, one gains the protection of the spiritual wind, harmonious sound, and favorable sails, relying entirely on the favorable wind. If the wind comes from the East, it is called "Thunder Gate Wind," and if the enemy is in the East, one should not engage in battle. If the wind comes from the Southeast, it is called "Great Gate Wind," and if the enemy is in the South, one should also avoid battle. The "Compendium of Secret Military Calculations" states: "When the Open Door and Yi Qi are aligned with the Xun Palace, it is appropriate to worship the Wind God, use fire to attack the enemy, and during battle, raise banners to observe the wind's response."
Ten Evasions (Continued)
The formation condition for "Cloud Concealment" is that the Yi Qi (Ghost) is combined with the three auspicious gates, Open Door, Xiu Men, and Sheng Men, and the six Xin (Metal) is located below it; another saying is that Yi Qi and Open Door falling in the Kun (Earth) palace also counts as this concealment. This concealment benefits from the essence of cloud vapor, making it suitable for hiding one's presence and obscuring the enemy's vision. When using clouds for divination, observe their shape: if the clouds resemble a woman spreading her arms and legs, it indicates good news within three days, and the direction where the clouds appear is favorable. If white clouds are on the outside with black clouds in between, it suggests the enemy has hidden troops; if the clouds form in a line like geese flying in formation, it indicates a general is moving out, and the direction where the clouds appear is favorable. If the clouds resemble a sitting dog, it indicates hidden troops; if the clouds are trembling and broken by the wind, it indicates a great defeat. Another saying is that when Yi Qi and Xiu Men fall in the Kun palace, it is favorable for requesting rain, establishing cloud camps, and manufacturing military equipment, allowing one to wait for the clouds to correspond and verify.
The conditions for "Dragon遁" (Dragon Concealment) are: the Xiu Men and Yi Qi are both present in the Kan palace where the sixth Jia is located, and it also counts if they are present in the palace of the sixth Gui. At this time, it is suitable to worship the Dragon God, pray for rain, ambush and capture thieves, plot to cross a river, guard the water entrance, set up traps and ambushes, attack enemies, and measure the width of water surfaces. This can gain the assistance of the Dragon God and is favorable for water battles. The conditions for "Tiger遁" (Tiger Concealment) are: Yi Qi and the sixth Xin are combined, and both are present in the Gen palace along with Xiu Men; it also counts if the sixth Xin is combined with the Sheng Men and is present in the Gen palace. At this time, it is suitable to recruit outlaws, and when fighting, a sudden attack will surely win. It is also suitable to set up ambushes for guerrilla warfare, hide troops, plan to cross critical areas, and assess the difficulty of roads. This is favorable for using strategies and borrowing the power of the tiger. Another interpretation: when the Sheng Men is combined with Bing Qi and the sixth Xin, it is also considered Tiger遁, which is favorable for defense against enemies. It is suitable to establish mountain strongholds and wait for the tiger omen to appear.
The conditions for "Bing Wonder" (神遁) are: Bing Qi and Jiu Tian are combined and located at the Life Gate. At this time, it is suitable to pray to deities, perform magic, draw lines to determine directions, step on the "Yu Gang" (Yü's staff), construct altars, expel evil spirits, appoint generals, summon wind and rain, and subdue ghosts and spirits, thereby gaining protection from heavenly deities. Another view states: "At this time, constructing and painting divine images will be blessed by deities." The conditions for "Ding Wonder" (鬼遁) are: the Life Gate, Ding Qi, and Jiudi are all located at the Gen Palace; if Yi Qi combines with Jiudi and falls at Du Men, it also counts as this wonder. At this time, it is suitable for scouting enemy secrets, ambushing camps, setting up false appearances to lure enemies into emptiness, and commanding spirits and ghosts, thereby gaining concealment from spirits and ghosts. Another view states: "If Open Door combines with Ding Qi and Jiudi, it is also considered as Ghost Wonder."
The Three Marvels and Nobleman Ascend to the Hall Pattern
The Three Marvels are in their respective strong positions. When the Yi Marvel is in the Zhen palace, it is called "Sun rising from Fusu," as Zhen represents the East, where the wood of Yi is strong. This is the Nobleman sitting in the "Yi Mao main hall." When the Bing Marvel is in the Li palace, it is called "Moon shining on the main gate," as Li represents the South, where fire is strong. This is the Nobleman sitting in the "Bing Wu main hall." When the Ding Marvel is in the Dui palace, it is called "Ding appearing in the West," as Dui is the position of heavenly spirits. This is the Nobleman sitting in the "Ding You original hall." All three cases refer to the Three Marvels returning to their strongest positions. This is the most honorable configuration in the Gate of Marvels.
“三奇上吉門格”乙丙丁三奇到,而無開休生三吉門者,不可用。如三吉門到,而無三奇者,尚可用。經云:“背生向死,百戰百勝”。總之三奇吉星、吉門俱到,又不犯格,方為萬全。若事在危急,諸星不到,須用背生向死之法。如敵勢尚緩,候三奇吉門俱到,斯為全美矣。
The "Three Marvels and Auspicious Gate Pattern" means that although the three marvels, 乙, 丙, and 丁, are in place, if they are not accompanied by the three auspicious gates, 开, 休, and 生, the time is not suitable. Conversely, if the three auspicious gates are in place but the three marvels are missing, it is stillwith difficulty acceptable. The classic text says, "Facing the Life Gate and backing away from the Death Gate, one will win a hundred battles." In summary, only when the three marvels, auspicious stars, and auspicious gates are all present, and no凶 patterns are violated, can it be considered absolutely safe. If the situation is urgent and all the stars are not in place, then the emergency method of "facing the Life Gate and backing away from the Death Gate" must be used. However, if the enemy's situation is not urgent, one should wait until both the three marvels and the auspicious gates are aligned before taking action, which is the most perfect approach.
“三奇專使格”甲己日乙奇,丙辛日丙奇,乙庚日丁奇,丁壬日乙奇,戊癸日丁奇也。以上皆吉,陰陽二遁同。“玉女守門格”甲己時在丙,乙庚時在辛,丙辛時在乙,丁壬時在己,戊癸時在壬。一云:兌宮有丁辛者吉。
The "Three Marvels Special Mission Pattern" determines the use of the Marvels based on the day stem: on Jia day and Ji day, use Yi Marvel; on Bing day and Xin day, use Bing Marvel; on Yi day and Geng day, use Ding Marvel; on Ding day and Ren day, use Yi Marvel; on Wu day and Gui day, use Ding Marvel. All these patterns are considered auspicious and can be applied with both Yang Dun and Yin Dun layouts. The "Ling Girl Guarding the Gate Pattern" determines the use based on the hour stem: for the hour of Jia or Ji, use Bing; for the hour of Yi or Geng, use Xin; for the hour of Bing or Xin, use Yi; for the hour of Ding or Ren, use Ji; for the hour of Wu or Gui, use Ren. Another interpretation states that if the Dui palace contains Ding Marvel and six Xin, it is also considered auspicious.
“交泰格”乙奇加丁,乙奇加丙,遇之大吉。“天遇(運)昌氣格”六丁加六乙。“三奇利合格”六丁加六甲,六甲謂之符頭。“天輔時格”甲己日甲戌,乙庚日甲申,丙辛日甲午,丁壬日甲辰,戊癸日甲寅。行兵、戰鬪、上官、參謁、求財、遠行皆吉。有罪者,皆逢宥釋。甲己日甲子、己巳時亦是。

The "Tian Yu Chang Qi Ge" (also called "Tian Yun Chang Qi Ge") is when the sixth Ding is combined with the sixth Yi. The "San Qi Li He Ge" is when the sixth Ding is combined with the sixth Jia, and the sixth Jia is also called "Fu Tou," which refers to the beginning of the ten-day period governed by the Chief Symbol. At this hour, military campaigns, taking office, visiting superiors, seeking wealth, and traveling are all auspicious. Those with crimes on their bodies will receive leniency and be released. The Jia Zi hour and Jisi hour on Jia or Ji days also belong to this category.

"Flying Bird Falling into a Hole" refers to Bing Qi being placed on six Wu. "Magpie Containing a Flower" refers to Bing Qi being placed on Yi Qi. "Three Marvels Receiving the Messenger" means each of the Three Marvels is placed on the palace corresponding to its matched beginning of the ten-day cycle: Yi Qi is placed on Jia Wu and Jia Xu, Bing Qi is placed on Jia Zi and Jia Shen, and Ding Qi is placed on Jia Yin and Jia Chen. When the Three Marvels receive the six instruments as their starting palace, they have a proper basis and someone to assign tasks, making it one of the highest auspicious patterns in the Gate of Marvels.

“悖格”丙加值符,加丙及丙加歲月日時之上,俱為悖格,主蒞政綱紀紊亂。丙加丙亦為悖,主見亂臣賊子。“天網四張”歌曰:“天網四張無路走,一二網低有路通”。如壬戌年九月癸未日癸丑時陰六局,休門與值符加時干癸於坎宮,日時二干俱加離宮,是為網高九尺。又曰:“天網四張不可當”。此時用事有災殃,若是有人強出者,立便身眠見血光。

The song about "天网四张" says: "The heavenly net spreads on all four sides, with no way to escape. When the net falls over the first and second palaces, it is low and there is still a way to pass through." For example, in the year Renxu, ninth month, day Guiwei, and hour Guichou, using the Yin Dun (阴遁) sixth layout, the Xiu Men (休门) and Chief Symbol are placed over the Hour Stem Gui in the Kan Palace, while both the Day Stem and Hour Stem are placed over the Li Palace. This is called "网高九尺" (the net is nine feet high), and people have no way to escape. Another line says: "天网四张不可当" (the heavenly net spreads on all four sides and cannot be resisted). Both the Heaven Net and the Ground Net are unfavorable for military campaigns and travel, and they are considered extremely dangerous. 'High Grid' refers to 'Heaven Net Four Spread,' which means the six癸 on the Heaven Plate are added to the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth palaces, which is very dangerous and should not be used. 'Low Grid' refers to the six癸 on the Heaven Plate being added to the first, second, third, and fourth palaces. The net is low, and people can still crawl out. Before using this table, first use the official almanac called 《Shi Xian Shu》 to determine the exact time when the sun enters a new zodiac sign. Then, you can select the "Tai Chong Tian Ma Fang" according to the month and the hour. The horizontal rows of the table represent the twelve hours: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai. In the first month, use "Deng Ming" as the month general, starting from Zi hour, the Tai Chong Tian Ma Fang sequence is Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao. In the second month, use "He Kui" as the month general, the sequence is Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen. In the third month, use "Cong Kuai" as the month general, the sequence is Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si. In the fourth month, use "Song Song" as the month general, the sequence is Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu. In the fifth month, use "Xiao Ji" as the month general, the sequence is Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei. In the sixth month, use "Sheng Guang" as the month general, the sequence is You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen. It can be seen that each month, the Tian Ma Fang for the same hour moves forward by one position.

In July, the "Taiyi" is used as the month general, starting from the Zi hour. The "Tai Chong Tian Ma Fang" (Heavenly Horse direction) proceeds in the order of Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You. In August, the "Tian Gang" is used as the month general, proceeding in the order of Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu. In September, the "Tai Chong" is used as the month general, proceeding in the order of Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai. In October, the "Gong Cao" is used as the month general, proceeding in the order of Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi. In November, the "Da Ji" is used as the month general, proceeding in the order of Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou. In December, the "Shen Hou" is used as the month general, proceeding in the order of Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin. The term "Tai Chong Tian Ma" refers to the direction where the "Tai Chong" deity and the "Yi Ma" (Post Horse) are both present. Traveling, conveying orders, or fleeing in this direction is considered most auspicious.
In general, the Sun's passage through the palaces, the three heavenly gates, the four earthly gates, the private door of the earth, and the same example as the great surge and heavenly horse direction.
In the morning, when taking action, use 'Dangui' (Morning Favor), looking at the characters above, which are the six time positions on the inner disk: Yi, Xun, Bing, Ding, Kun, and Geng. In the evening, when taking action, use 'Mugui' (Evening Favor), looking at the characters below, which are the six time positions on the inner disk: Xin, Qian, Ren, Gui, Gen, and Kun. The six time positions of Jia and the other five are the places where the Favor God arrives. From亥 to辰, which are yang branches, the arrangement should proceed in the order of the branches. From巳 to戌, which are yin branches, the arrangement should proceed in the reverse order of the branches. The Heaven and Earth disks should originally be combined for calculation, but when viewed separately, it is sufficient to know: if Jia falls in the Mau宫, use Mugui; if Xun falls in the Si宫, use Dangui.
For example, after the Rain Water solar term in the first lunar month, the sun moves to the star division 「Zu Zi」, and the month general is in the亥 position. Therefore, the亥 is added to the chosen hour, and thus the morning and evening dignitaries are determined, and yin and yang are established. Then, looking at the position where the dignitary falls, we carefully distinguish that the yang branches should move in the forward direction and the yin branches should move in the reverse direction, thus determining the positions of the three stars: Liu He, Tai Chang, and Tai Yin. Another example is on a Jia day using the卯 hour. Since the卯 belongs to the following Yixing, we use the evening dignitary, which is determined as the yang dignitary. The亥 is added to the卯 position and counted forward, resulting in the yang dignitary 「Wei」 falling on the亥 position. Since the亥 is a yang branch, we start from the dignitary and count forward through the twelve spirits, resulting in Liu He in the寅 position, Tai Chang in the未 position, and Tai Yin in the酉 position.
For example, on a Jia day using the hour of Wu, Wu belongs to the upper row of characters, so the morning nobleman is used, and it is determined as a yin nobleman. Place Hai on Wu and count forward, the yin nobleman 'Chou' falls on Shen. Shen is a yin branch, so starting from the nobleman, we count backward to get Taiyin at Xu, Taichang at Zi, and Liuhex at Si. Another example is on a Jia day using the hour of Zi, Zi belongs to the lower row of characters, so the evening nobleman is used, and it is determined as a yang nobleman. Place Hai on Zi and count forward, the yang nobleman 'Wei' falls on Shen. Shen is a yin branch, so again starting from the nobleman, we count backward to get Taiyin at Xu, Taichang at Zi, and Liuhex at Si. The rest of the days and hours are calculated in the same way. The mnemonic for the yang nobleman is: 'Geng and Wu stems have their nobleman at Chou (ox), Jia stem has its nobleman at Wei (sheep), Yi stem at Shen (monkey), Ji stem at Zi (rat), Bing stem at You (rooster), Ding stem at Hai (pig), Gui stem at Si (snake), Ren stem at Mao (rabbit), and the six Xin stems at Yin (tiger), these are all yang nobleman positions.' The mnemonic for the yin nobleman is: 'Jia stem's yin nobleman is at Chou (ox), Geng and Wu stems at Wei (sheep), Yi stem at Zi (rat), Ji stem at Shen (monkey), Bing stem at You (rooster), Ding stem at Hai (pig), Xin stem at Wu (horse), Ren stem at Si (snake), Gui stem at Mao (rabbit), these are the positions of the yin nobleman.'
Discussing the Heaven Gate and Earth Gate
The "Rushi Ge" says: "Tianyi, Liuhe, and Taoyin govern matters concerning women and private affairs." The key to these governing forces overseeing private matters lies in the Three Marvels being located above the Six Instruments, and the Three Marvels coinciding with auspicious gates. Additionally, the "Heavenly Three Doors" of Taichong, Xiaojí, and Conggui should be present. Furthermore, among the twelve divine spirits of Jianchu, the spirits of Chú, Wei, Ding, and Kai, known as the "Earthly Four Gates," should also be included. Such a direction is called the "Fushí Direction." Whether seeking blessings, feasting, traveling afar, or entering or exiting, it is auspicious.
The song says: "Take the name of the month general for this month and place it on the earthly branch of the chosen time. The twelve month generals are counted in order. Among them, the directions of Tai Chong, Xiao Ji, and Cong Kuai are the three gates for avoiding misfortune, called 'Heavenly Three Gates.' The method is to count the month generals in order from the time's earthly branch." For example, if one travels at noon in the second lunar month after the rainwater period, place the month general 'Deng Ming' on the 'Wu' branch. Thus, Deng Ming is on Wu, Shen Hou on Wei, Da Ji on Shen, Gong Cao on You, Tai Chong on Xu (this is the Heavenly Gate), Tian Gang on Hai, Tai Yi on Zi, Sheng Guang on Chou, Xiao Ji on Yin (this is the Heavenly Gate), Cheng Song on Mao, Cong Kuai on Chen (this is the Heavenly Gate), and He Kuai on Si.
It is necessary to use the "Shi Xian Shu" to determine the exact moment when the sun enters a new zodiac mansion, and only then can the direction be selected. For example, after the winter solstice last year on a certain day and time, the sun reached the "Yuan Xiao" mansion, and since the sun was in the Zi position, the "Shen Hou" month general should be added to the time of the event. Common people only know that "Deng Ming" is the month general for the first month, but they do not know that one must wait until after the rainwater season on a certain day and time, when the sun reaches the "Ju Zi" mansion and actually enters the Hai mansion, before changing to "Deng Ming" as the month general. After that, the sequence continues, and whenever the "Cong Kuai," "Xiao Ji," and "Tai Chong" appear, these are called the "Three Heavenly Doors." If the noble god happens to be in the Qian mansion or the Hai position on that day, it is called "the noble god enters the heavenly gate," which is very auspicious.
"The Heavenly Month General" refers to the position of the Sun, which is determined by the month: in the first month it is in the亥 (Hai) position, in the second month in戌 (Xu), third month in酉 (You), fourth month in申 (Shen), fifth month in未 (Wei), sixth month in午 (Wu), seventh month in巳 (Si), eighth month in辰 (Chen), ninth month in卯 (Mao), tenth month in寅 (Yin), eleventh month in丑 (Chou), and twelfth month in子 (Zi). It moves in a retrograde direction. "The Earthly Month General" refers to the Month Builder, which is also determined by the month: in the first month it is in寅 (Yin), second month in卯 (Mao), third month in辰 (Chen), fourth month in巳 (Si), fifth month in午 (Wu), sixth month in未 (Wei), seventh month in申 (Shen), eighth month in酉 (You), ninth month in戌 (Xu), tenth month in亥 (Hai), eleventh month in子 (Zi), and twelfth month in丑 (Chou). It moves in a progressive direction. The two move in opposite directions, perfectly complementing each other.

"The Heavenly Stems for the 'Heavenly Talisman' are determined by the middle solar terms of each month: the first month, Rain Water, corresponds to Ren; the second month, Spring Equinox, corresponds to Qian; the third month, Grain Rain, corresponds to Xin; the fourth month, Grain Full, corresponds to Geng; the fifth month, Summer Solstice, corresponds to Kun; the sixth month, Great Heat, corresponds to Ding; the seventh month, Limit of Heat, corresponds to Bing; the eighth month, Autumn Equinox, corresponds to Xun; the ninth month, Frost Descent, corresponds to Yi; the tenth month, Beginning of Winter, corresponds to Jia; the eleventh month, Winter Solstice, corresponds to Gen; the twelfth month, Great Cold, corresponds to Gui. The Earthly Branches for the 'Earthly Talisman' are determined by the solar terms of each month: the first month, Start of Spring, corresponds to Zi; the second month, Awakening of Insects, corresponds to Hai; the third month, Clear and Bright, corresponds to Xu; the fourth month, Start of Summer, corresponds to You; the fifth month, Grain in Ear, corresponds to Shen; the sixth month, Minor Heat, corresponds to Wei; the seventh month, Start of Autumn, corresponds to Wu; the eighth month, White Dew, corresponds to Si; the ninth month, Cold Dew, corresponds to Chen; the tenth month, Beginning of Winter, corresponds to Mao; the eleventh month, Heavy Snow, corresponds to Chou; the twelfth month, Minor Cold, corresponds to You. The 'Heavenly Talisman Classic' explains the correspondence between the twelve star positions and the Earthly Branches: the first month, Ju Zi, corresponds to Hai; the second month, Jiang Lou, corresponds to Xu; the third month, Da Liang, corresponds to You; the fourth month, Shi Chen, corresponds to Shen; the fifth month, Chun Shou, corresponds to Wei; the sixth month, Chun Huo, corresponds to Wu; the seventh month, Chun Wei, corresponds to Si; the eighth month, Shou Xing, corresponds to Chen; the ninth month, Da Huo, corresponds to Mao; the tenth month, Xi Mu, corresponds to Chou; the eleventh month, Xing Ji, corresponds to Zi; the twelfth month, Yuan Xiao, corresponds to Zi."
Twelve Branch Deities
Here are the "Heavenly Generals" and "Month Generals" corresponding to each of the twelve Earthly Branches: Shen is paired with the White Tiger deity and the Transmission General; You is paired with the Taiyin deity and the Conggui General; Xu is paired with the Sky Void deity and the Heqiu General; Hai is paired with the Yuanwu (Xuanwu) deity and the Dengming General; Wei is paired with the Taichang deity and the Xiaojí General; Zi is paired with the Heavenly Empress deity and the Shenhou General; Wu is paired with the Zhuque deity and the Shengguang General; Chou is paired with the Tianyi deity and the Dají General; Si is paired with the Tengshe deity and the Taiyi General; Chen is paired with the Gouchen deity and the Tian Gang General; Mao is paired with the Liuhe deity and the Taichong General; Yin is paired with the Qinglong deity and the Gongcao General. Whenever the term "deity" is used, it refers to the twelve Heavenly Generals, and whenever the term "general" is used, it refers to the twelve Month Generals. These two sets of names should be clearly distinguished.
The song says: "Place the Month Builder on the earthly branch of the time of action, and proceed in order through the sequence of Jian, Chu, Man, Ping, then Ding, Zhi, Po, Wei, followed by Cheng, Shou, Kai, Bi, completing a full cycle of the twelve spirits on the palm; among these, Chu, Ding, Wei, and Kai are known as the 'Four Doors of the Earth,' and in times of danger one can escape through these four directions." The specific method is to count forward from the Month Builder on the time of action: for example, in the month of Yin and the time of Yin, start with "Jian" at the Yin position, "Chu" at the Mao position, "Ding" at the Wu position, "Wei" at the You position, and "Kai" at the Zi position. If the Three Marvels are present at these positions, it is very auspicious; if further combined with the three favorable gates of Kai, Xiu, and Sheng, it is even better. The same method applies to other months and times.
For example, in the ninth month, the month builder is in Xu. Using the hour of Si to do things, place Xu on the Si position and proceed in order: the builder is in Si, the remover is in Wu (Wu is the earth gate), the full is in Wei, the level is in Shen, the fixed is in You (You is the earth gate), the holding is in Xu, the broken is in Hai, the dangerous is in Zi (Zi is the earth gate), the completed is in Chou, the collected is in Yin, the opened is in Mao (Mao is the earth gate), and the closed is in Chen. In this way, the four directions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You are exactly the locations of the 'earth four gates,' which are all auspicious, allowing one to enter and exit from these directions to avoid danger.
