Charting guides: Qi Men Dun Jia Chart
General Preface
Qi Men Dun Jia Texts
The layout rules have to be clear first or the material on patterns has nothing to attach to. Work a board by hand alongside the verses.
I have privately studied the origin of the art of "Qimen Dunjia." In ancient times, the Yellow Emperor fought against Chiyou at ZhuLu and could not gain the upper hand. One night he dreamed that a heavenly deity bestowed him with a secret formula, and upon waking he ordered his minister Fenghou to deduce and systematize it into a complete system of numerology and divination, thus originating "Dunjia." Later, during the reign of Emperor Yao, Da Yu was commissioned to control the floods. Da Yu received documents from the Mysterious Lady of the Ninth Heaven and, following the patterns on the back of the tortoise from the Luo River, arranged them into nine categories of statecraft known as "Jiu Chou," thereby bringing "Dunjia" into prominence. In the Han dynasty, Zhang Liang (styled Zifang) consolidated all the configurations into eighteen layouts, achieving great military successes. Zhuge Liang of Shu Han separated the three marvels, Yi, Bing, and Ding, and arranged them separately, relying on them to establish the great endeavor of reviving the Han dynasty amidst difficulties.
When beginning the practice, first arrange the 'Nine Palaces' on the palm: the Kan Palace corresponds to the number one, the坤 Palace to two, the Zhen Palace to three, the Xun Palace to four, the Central Palace to five, the Qian Palace to six, the Dui Palace to seven, the Gen Palace to eight, and the Li Palace to nine. Once the numbers of the Nine Palaces are fixed, the order of heaven and earth's transformations becomes clear. Then distribute the Eight Trigrams on the board: the Li Trigram is placed in the South, the Kan Trigram in the North, the Zhen Trigram in the East, the Dui Trigram in the West, the Xun Trigram in the Southeast, the Kun Trigram in the Southwest, the Gen Trigram in the Northeast, and the Qian Trigram in the Northwest. With the Eight Trigrams in their proper positions, the four cardinal directions and four intermediate directions are fixed, providing a basis for the formation of the layout.
The numbers of the Nine Palaces, whether arranged horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, always add up to fifteen. The Upper, Middle, and Lower Triple Yuan (San Yuan) are alternately arranged within them. Using the Eight Trigrams to govern the eight solar terms: Start of Spring, Spring Equinox, Start of Summer, Summer Solstice, Start of Autumn, Autumn Equinox, Start of Winter, and Winter Solstice, the entire year's solar terms are complete. Each solar term governs three segments of climate, making the entire year's climate complete. When setting up the structure, if the heavenly stem is Jia or Ji, that day is considered the "Fu Tou" (symbol head). If the Fu Tou does not align with the solar term, the "Rùn Qi" (leap odd) method is used to adjust the structure number. If the Fu Tou comes early but the solar term arrives late, check where the Jia or Ji day falls and use the "Chāo Shen" (transcending deity) method to determine the structure. If the solar term arrives first but the Fu Tou is later, check the position of the Jia or Ji day in the day branch and arrange the structure according to the palace corresponding to the solar term.
Connect the Zi position in the due north with the Wu position in the due south to divide the board into eastern and western halves. The eastern half, which corresponds to after the winter solstice, uses the Yang Dun method. It follows the order of Kan, Gen, Zhen, and Xun, with the Six Instruments arranged in sequence and the Three Marvels arranged in reverse order, starting from the palace where the Straight Symbol is located and moving clockwise through the nine palaces. The western half, corresponding to after the summer solstice, uses the Yin Dun method. It follows the order of Li, Kun, Dui, and Qian, with the Three Marvels arranged in sequence and the Six Instruments arranged in reverse order, starting from the palace where the Straight Symbol is located and moving counterclockwise through the eight trigrams. Determining whether to use Yang Dun or Yin Dun is the first step in setting up the board. Once the direction is reversed, the entire layout becomes incorrect.
Identifying the nine palaces and placing the nine stars, one star is selected as the 'Straight Symbol' (直符), thereby distinguishing the fortune and misfortune of the entire layout. For example, if the 'Tianpeng' star in the Kan palace (first palace) is chosen as the 'Straight Symbol', then the Kun palace (second palace) has Tianrui, the Zhen palace (third palace) has Tianchong, the Xun palace (fourth palace) has Tianfu, the central palace (fifth palace) has Tianqin, the Qian palace (sixth palace) has Tianxin, the Dui palace (seventh palace) has Tianzhu, the Gen palace (eighth palace) has Tianren, and the Li palace (ninth palace) has Tianying. Then, the eight gates are assigned to the eight trigrams, and one gate is selected as the 'Straight Gate' (直使), allowing the fortune and misfortune of the entire layout to be determined. For instance, if the 'Open Gate' (开门) is assigned to the Qian palace (sixth palace) as the 'Straight Gate', then the Kan palace is the Xiu Men (Rest Gate), the Gen palace is the Sheng Men (Life Gate), the Zhen palace is the Shang Men (Injury Gate), the Xun palace is the Du Men (Closure Gate), the Li palace is the Jing Men (Prosperity Gate), the Kun palace is the Si Men (Death Gate), and the Dui palace is the Jing Men (Startle Gate). When rotating the plate, the 'Straight Symbol' is moved to the current hour's heavenly stem. The hour stem stops at a certain palace, and the 'Straight Symbol' begins at that palace. The 'Straight Gate' is located according to the current hour's earthly branch. The hour branch stops at a certain palace, and the direction indicated by the 'Straight Gate' exists in that palace.
The nine stars on the Heaven Plate together with the Three Marvels and Six Instruments change every hour, following the continuous movement of celestial bodies; the nine stars and Marvels on the Earth Plate move only once every five days, following the stability and quietness of the earth. When the Heaven Plate is placed over the Earth Plate, it can be used to examine the waxing and waning of auspicious and inauspicious signs; when the Earth Plate receives the presence of the Heaven Plate, it can be used to judge the fullness and emptiness of fortune and misfortune. When the Jiazi of the Heaven Plate falls on the Jiazi of the Earth Plate, it is called 'Hidden Chant', and any situation where the Eight Doors and the Direct Symbol return to their original palace are all of the same type, and such a situation is not suitable for action. When the Tianying star on the Earth Plate meets the Tianpeng star on the Heaven Plate, it is called 'Reverse Chant', and any situation where the Eight Doors are added to the opposite palace are all of the same type, and when encountered, one should avoid action.
The gates of 开 (Open Door), 休 (Rest Gate), and 生 (Life Gate) are favorable doors. When these are adjacent to 乙, 丙, and 丁, the Three Marvels, the matters sought are mostly smooth and successful. Conversely, if the Three Marvels fall into the Storage position, or if the eight gates are restrained by the Five Phases of the palace they are in, forming a 'door constraint,' then the affairs will find it difficult to achieve success. When 乙, 丙, and 丁, the Three Marvels, are combined with 生, 休, and 开, the three favorable gates, and also align with the position of 太阴, this is called 'Three Marvels Fully Favorable.' Whether 太阴, a type of yin spirit, is present or not must be carefully examined by looking at the direction faced and the direction turned away from. If one encounters 'Three Marvels and Six Instruments Mutual Crime,' this is the mostvicious (evil) pattern and must never be used for action.
The "Nine Evasions" refer to nine configurations where the Three Marvels combine with auspicious gates, forming favorable hidden and evasive patterns. They are most advantageous, allowing one to act freely. The Open Door combines with the Yi Marvel and is placed over the Ji position, without violating the taboos of the Marvels entering their graves or the gate being pressed, which is called "Earth Evasion." It is like borrowing the energy of Ziwu to conceal one's traces, relying on the essence of the sun. The monthly Marvel, Bing, falls on the Ding position and meets the Life Gate, also without violating the taboos of the Marvels entering their graves or the gate being pressed, which is called "Heaven Evasion." It is like riding on the "Huagai" star to conceal one's traces, relying on the essence of the moon. The Xiu Men combines with the Ding Marvel and is also accompanied by the "Taiyin," with the celestial and terrestrial disks overlapping, which is called "Human Evasion." Using this configuration for military campaigns is also feasible.
The Bing Qi and the Life Gate are together, and also harmonize with the Jiu Tian, and this type of concealment belongs to the Bing Wonder. The Ding Qi meets the Xiu Men and falls into the Jiudi, and this type of concealment belongs to the Ding Wonder. The Long Concealment is when the monthly Qi Bing combines with the Xiu Men and the癸 water and falls into the Kan Palace. The Tiger Concealment is when the Yi Qi is at the Life Gate and emerges from the Gen Palace. The Wind Concealment is when the daily Qi Yi combines with the Open Door and falls into the Xun Palace. The Cloud Concealment is when the monthly Qi Bing combines with the Open Door and falls into the Kun Palace. These are the names of the nine types of concealment, which are truly secret techniques of the military strategists. It only depends on the skill of the person using them, and there is nothing that does not correspond when tested.
The nine stars are divided into yin and yang, and the eight gates are either open or closed. Among the nine stars, only the Tian Rui Star does not have a fixed position; it resides in the Southwest Kun Palace but actually belongs to the center five palace. When taking action, one should "follow three and avoid five"—move towards theLife Qi in the Zhen three palace and avoid theDeath Qi in the center five palace. One side is disaster, and the other is vitality. There are three favorable directions for victory: first, the position of Tian Yi where the Heaven Symbol is directly facing, the commander should be stationed here; second, the palace immediately after the Heaven Symbol is Jiu Tian, where the army should be stationed; third, where the Earth Gate coincides with the Three Marvels, if the army advances from the Earth Gate direction to attack the Death Gate direction, it will achieve victory in every battle.
There are five directions that should not be attacked: "Tian Yi" and "Jiu Tian," attacking these will certainly bring calamity, these are the first and second; "Sheng Men" and "Jiu Di," attacking these will certainly lead to disaster, these are the third and fourth; if the straight symbol falls exactly on the straight messenger's palace, then using troops to break through or attack the enemy's formation will result in the commander's death and the destruction of the army, this is the fifth. As for the time of day: during the first ten days of the first month, if the刑门 is encountered, entry and exit will be difficult, it is suitable to hide; during the second ten days of the first month, the yang energy is inside, it is suitable to hold firm and is favorable for hiding troops; during the first hour of the seasons of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, the yin is inside while the yang is outside, one must first distinguish who is the main force and who is the guest force before determining the outcome of the battle.
Six Yi are called "Heavenly Virtue," and when traveling according to them, one moves upward. A person situated under the day's odd number can determine a favorable outcome before the event occurs. Bing is called "Heavenly Authority," and if one does not receive the timely assistance of Bing fire melting metal, one should beware of unexpected losses. When the hour is aligned with Six Yi, it is called "The Jade Maiden Conceals Her Form," like hiding and becoming invisible. When the hour is aligned with Six Wu, it is called "Riding a Dragon for Ten Thousand Li," and even if encountering villains, the villains will vanish on their own.
Six Ji is called "Di Hu," suitable for handling secret affairs and also used for ambushes and raids. Six Gui is called "Tian Wang," one should examine whether the net is high or low; if the net is high, it is favorable for escape. When using Six Geng, battle will bring calamity upon the entire army. When using Six Xin, misfortune will certainly fall upon the commander himself. Six Ren is called "Tian Luo," which will bring sudden misfortunes. Six Jia is the first among the ten heavenly stems and also the first in the context of the Qi Men system; using it to respond to the situation is most effective.
The Heavenly Stems on the Heaven Plate are added to the Heavenly Stems on the Earth Plate, forming certain patterns. Jia added to Bing is called "Wu," indicating no obstacles in action or affairs. Bing added to Jia is called "Flying Bird Falling into a Cave," meaning plans and strategies will succeed. Yi added to Xin is called "Azure Dragon Escapes," indicating loss of wealth and failure. Xin added to Yi is called "White Tiger Runs Wild," indicating harm to the body. Ding added to Gui is called "Vermilion Bird Jumps into the River," leading to legal troubles and imprisonment. Gui added to Ding is called "Teng Snake Twists and Turns," meaning worries and anxieties will follow one after another.
The six Gengs added to the straight symbol are called "Fu Gong Ge," which is unfavorable to the main force but favorable to the opposing force. When the straight symbol is added to the six Gengs, it is called "Fei Gong Ge," which should not be forced; instead, it is better to use strategy. When Geng is added to the straight symbol, it is called "Tai Bai" (the planet of the White General) blocking "Tian Yi" (the Celestial Ethereal), indicating an invasion by external forces, and the main general will surely be defeated. When the straight symbol is added to the six Gengs, it is called "Tai Yi" (the planet of the Supreme General) blocking "Tai Bai," indicating a forced military action, and the opposing general will certainly face obstacles. When the straight messenger falls on Geng, it is called "Yezhan" (wild battle), indicating that although the troops are strong, the main force will still be in a difficult situation. When Geng is added to the straight messenger, it is called "Tong Gong" (same palace), indicating that although the generals are brave, they will certainly suffer defeat. When Geng is added to Bing, it is called "Tai Bai entering Ying Huo" (the planet of the White General entering the planet of the Red General), indicating that bandits will certainly come. When Bing is added to Geng, it is called "Bing fire entering the metal territory," indicating that bandits will certainly retreat. These two patterns are unfavorable to both the main and opposing forces, so do not force military action just because you understand the Qi Men.
The great pattern in the heavens and earth is when Geng is added to Gui; the small pattern is when Ren is added to Geng. When Geng is added to Ji, the soldiers will die on the way, and this pattern is also called the "Crime Pattern." When Ji is added to Geng, the generals will be trapped in dangerous paths. The "Year Pattern" occurs when the flowing year meets the six Gengs; the "Month Pattern" occurs when Geng is placed on the month builder's day. When Geng is on the day stem, it is called the "Hidden Stem Pattern," and the person of the main side will be injured. When the day stem is on Geng, it is called the "Flying Palace Pattern," and the general of the opposing side cannot win. When the hour stem controls the day stem, it is called the "Five Unfavorable Hours," and it will certainly damage the brightness of the day and moon. When Bing is added to the day stem, it is called "Disorder," and the rules and regulations will be overturned.
There are three gates in the heavens, namely Tai Chong, Xiao Ji, and Cong Kuai, which are the positions of the three Month Generals. On the earth, there are four gates, namely the days of Chu, Wei, Kai, and Ding from the twelve divine days of Jian Chu. The place where the Direct Commander meets these is where the Heavenly Nobleman is located. The place where the Direct Symbol is located is where the Heavenly Nobleman moves. The Direct Symbol and the Heavenly Nobleman are together. When the Heavenly Nobleman encounters danger, it should leave the Open Door position and move to the Kun Palace. The palace immediately after the Direct Symbol is called Jiu Tian, and the one two palaces after is called Jiudi. In Jiu Tian, it is suitable to display military strength and show power. In Jiudi, it is suitable to hide and conceal.
The three gates preceding the straight symbol are "Liu He," and the two gates before that are "Tai Yin." Escaping from Liu He is most advantageous, while hiding in Tai Yin is most suitable. The direction of the "Three Deceptions" is favorable for all actions, as it combines Xiu Men, Sheng Men, and Kai Men with the three marvels, Yi, Bing, and Ding, along with the three Yin spirits, Jiudi, Tai Yin, and Liu He. The direction of the "Five Falsehoods" has both good and bad outcomes, as it combines Du Men, Si Men, Jing Men, Shang Men, and Jing Men with Jiudi, Tai Yin, and Liu He, along with the five elements Yi, Bing, Ding, Ji, and Gui.
As for the mysterious techniques of the Six Wu and the subtle secrets of the Six Jia Yin Fu, these can only be understood through inner contemplation and are difficult to convey in words. Anyone who aspires to protect the country and ensure the well-being of the people, and who in the future may become a great general or a high minister, must not be ignorant of them. Alas! Mastering this discipline allows one to hold heaven and earth in one's hands, to have the star mansions arranged within one's heart, and to command wind and thunder with one's breath, and to control spirits and ghosts at will. It is truly the secret writings hidden in the celestial chamber, the divine calculations that plan strategies in the tent and decide the fate of a thousand battles. Written on the eighth day of the fourth month in the late summer of the fourth year of the Great Ming Dynasty. Liu Ji, styled Bo Wen, records this.
Volume One
Song of the Recluse by the Smoke and Waves
The movement of Yang Dun and Yin Dun, whether in the order of progression or reversal, contains infinite subtleties. The turning points of yin and yang are the winter solstice and summer solstice: after the winter solstice, Yang Dun begins from the first palace of Kan; after the summer solstice, Yin Dun begins from the ninth palace of Li. This is known as "the two solstices return to the nine palaces." If one thoroughly understands the principle of the waxing and waning of yin and yang, the entire operation of heaven and earth can be grasped in one hand. Tracing back its origin: Huangdi, the Yellow Emperor, fought against Chiyou for a whole year in the area of Zhuolu, with continuous fierce battles. One day, Huangdi had a dream in which a heavenly deity bestowed upon him a secret formula. Upon waking, he built an altar and performed a solemn ritual. Soon after, a divine dragon carried a book of diagrams rising from the Luo River, while a colorful phoenix carried the heavenly scriptures flying amidst the blue clouds. Huangdi followed these heavenly books and entrusted his minister Fenghou to deduce and compile them, thus beginning the study of "Dun Jia Qimen" or the Art of Secret Gate.
The original system of the Qimen had a total of one thousand and eighty layouts. During the Zhou Dynasty, Jiang Taigong reduced it to seventy-two layouts. Later, in the Han Dynasty, Zhang Liang further simplified it to eighteen layouts, making it the most essential system. The order of learning involves first arranging the nine palaces on the palm so that the sum of the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal numbers equals fifteen, which is the diagram of the Luo Writing. Then, the Eight Trigrams are assigned to the eight solar terms, with each term governing the upper, middle, and lower trigrams. Yin Dun and Yang Dun are divided into the forward and reverse methods, and within each term, they are further divided into three trigrams, with changes so intricate that ordinary people cannot comprehend them. Every five days, a trigram changes, and the transition between trigrams must follow the rules of "receiving the qi" and "passing the god."
Recognize the nine palaces and assign the nine stars to each palace. The eight gates follow the order of the nine palaces. Within the nine palaces, the star in the palace where the first day of the ten-day cycle (六甲旬首) falls is called the "Chief Symbol" (值符). The gate that corresponds to it is called the "Duty Gate" (值使), and the two are clearly distinguished. The gate in the palace where the Chief Symbol is located is the Duty Gate. It changes every ten hours, and this can be used to deduce. When using, move the Chief Symbol to the heavenly stem of the hour and push the Duty Gate to its proper palace according to the rules of Yang Dun (阳遁) moving clockwise or Yin Dun (阴遁) moving counterclockwise. The six first days of the ten-day cycle (六甲旬首) have other names, which are the six stems: Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui, known as the "Six Instruments" (六仪). The "Three Marvels" (三奇) are the three stems: Yi, Bing, and Ding. In Yang Dun, the Six Instruments are arranged in order while the Three Marvels are arranged in reverse. In Yin Dun, the Six Instruments are arranged in reverse while the Three Marvels are arranged in order.
If a favorable gate coincides exactly with the Three Marvels, everything can be initiated from this direction, and all matters will be appropriate. However, one should also check the surrounding areas to ensure that no other palace has any flaws. The Three Marvels are truly useful only when they are accompanied by the 'Commander' (使). When they appear at the beginning of the Six Jia cycles, the benefits are significant. The phrase 'Three Marvels with Commander' means that the Yi Marvel meets the Jia Xu or Jia Wu (Xu being dog, Wu being horse), the Bing Marvel meets the Jia Zi or Jia Shen (Zi being rat, Shen being monkey), and the Ding Marvel meets the Jia Chen or Jia Yin (Chen being dragon, Yin being tiger). Therefore, it is said 'Six Ding Jade Maiden rides dragon and tiger'. In addition, when the Three Marvels move to the Six Instruments, it is called 'Jade Maiden guarding the gate'. If one wants to handle secret matters or arrange marriages, one should refer to this pattern.
The "Three Heavenly Doors" and "Four Earthly Gates" are methods for determining auspicious days for travel. The Three Heavenly Doors refer to the positions of the three month generals: Tai Chong (卯), Xiao Ji (未), and Cong Kuai (酉). These are the paths left by Heaven for secret travel. The Four Earthly Gates refer to the days of Jian Chu, the twelve divine spirits, specifically the days of Chú, Wei, Ding, and Kai. Any action should be taken on these days. Additionally, the three auspicious deities, Hui He, Tai Yin, and Tai Chang, when they govern a day, are naturally the gates left by the Earth for private passage. If the Three Marvels and auspicious gates are also present, traveling and doing affairs will bring great satisfaction. Among these, the position of Tai Chong, which is governed by the Heavenly Horse, is the most valuable: when suddenly encountering danger and needing to escape, one should rely on it.
As long as one can move in the direction of the Heavenly Horse, even if mountains of swords and spears are piled up, there is nothing to fear. The third palace of Zhen represents the source of life qi, while the fifth palace represents the presence of death qi. Therefore, victory comes from the third palace, and decline originates from the fifth palace. Understanding the timing of "wandering in the third and avoiding the fifth" is essential to grasp the true essence of heaven and earth's transformations. Among all the configurations, "hidden chant" is the most dangerous: when the Heaven Plate's Tianpeng overlaps with the Earth Plate's Tianpeng, it is called "hidden chant"; if Tianpeng moves to the position of Tianying, it is called "returning chant." The same principle applies to returning and hidden chants among the eight gates: if the Life Gate remains in its original position, the Death Door stays where it is, and the Star Gate does not move, then matters will become stagnant and unsmooth.
When encountering a return chant or hidden chant, even if malevolent stars are perfectly matched with the three marvels, all matters still turn adverse and are not suitable for use. The "Six Instruments Attacking Punishment" is also extremely凶: when Jiazi is the chief symbol, it is most dangerous if it falls into the eastern Zhen trigram's third palace; when Jiaxu is the chief symbol, it is punished when it falls into the Wei position; when Jiashen is the chief symbol, it is punished when it falls into the寅 position (which belongs to the tiger); when Jiayin is the chief symbol, it is punished when it falls into the巳 position; when Jiachen is the chief symbol, it is self-punished in the辰 position; and when Jiawu is the chief symbol, it is self-punished in the午 position. The three marvels entering theirStorage should also be carefully considered: on a Jia day, it is especially inappropriate for the marvels to fall into the Kun second palace. The Bing marvel belongs to the fire element, and theStorage of fire is in the戌 position, so when the Bing marvel falls into the戌 position, it is not suitable to carry out any affairs. Additionally, when the Bing marvel falls into the Kun second palace or the Ding marvel falls into the Gen eighth palace, they should also be treated as if they have entered theirStorage.
There is another忌 called "the hour stem falls into its墓": in the divination chart, when the stem of the hour falls into its own墓 palace, it is most unfavorable. For example, in the hours of Wuxu, Renchen, Bingxu, Guiwei, Dingchou, and similarly, they are all harmful. The "five unfavored hours" will make the true dragon energy impure, and it is said that the brightness of the sun and moon is damaged; it refers to the stem of the hour being able to overcome the stem of the day. For instance, if the day stem is Jia (wood), then Geng (metal) will overcome it, so on a Jia day, the Gengwu hour is unfavorable. The Three Marvels, favorable gates, and Taiyin should all be in the same palace together, which is very rare. If only two of them are present, it is still considered favorable, and one can act according to one's will, whether entering officialdom or retreating into seclusion, all can be as desired.
If the Chief Symbol and Duty Gate are both in favorable positions, this is the most precious situation for military operations. The usual method is to sit in this direction and attack the direction that is directly opposite, achieving victory in every battle. Please remember that the palace where the God of Heaven's Virtue resides should be where the general sits and commands, attacking the palace directly opposite. For example, if the Chief Symbol is in the ninth palace of Fire, then one should occupy the position of the Right Assistant Star and attack the opposite palace, the first palace of Water, which is the position of the Greedy Wolf Star. For the five yang hours, namely Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, and Wu, the heavenly spirits will convey messages to you: both the position to sit and the position to attack should be determined by the Three Marvels on the Heaven Plate. For the five yin hours, namely Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui, the Three Marvels on the Earth Plate should be used in the same way.
If the Three Marvels fall in one of the five Yang hours, it is most suitable to take the role of the guest, meaning the party that initiates the action first, which gives the advantage. However, if the Three Marvels fall in one of the five Yin hours, it is better to take the role of the host, meaning to respond later and be cautious. From the position of the Chief Symbol, counting forward three palaces leads to Liu He, counting forward two leads to Tai Yin; counting backward one leads to Jiu Tian, and counting backward two leads to Jiudi. Jiu Tian is suitable for displaying military strength and showing off military power, while Jiudi is suitable for hiding and setting up camps. If you want to hide troops, head toward Tai Yin's direction; if encountering Liu He's position, it is favorable for concealing one's trail and escaping.
The method of concealment is divided into three categories according to heaven, earth, and humanity: "Heavenly Concealment" uses the essence of the sun and has the Star of the Imperial Umbrella arriving; "Earthly Concealment" uses the essence of the moon and has purple clouds to cover it; "Human Concealment" relies on the deity of the waning moon. Specifically, the Life Gate paired with the six Bing stems and combined with the six Ding stems is called Heavenly Concealment, with clear boundaries; the Open Door paired with the six Yi stems and combined with the six Ji stems is called Earthly Concealment, which is not much different; the Life Gate paired with the six Ding stems and added with the waning moon is called Human Concealment, which is the most harmonious. If one asks what these three concealments are suitable for, they are nothing more than hiding the form and concealing the trail, which is exactly their advantage.

Geng corresponds to Tai Bai, the planet of metal, and Bing corresponds to Ying Huo, the planet of fire. When Geng and Bing are combined, how many truly understand the distinction? When the six Gengs are added upon the six Bings, it is called "Tai Bai entering Ying Huo"; when the six Bings are added upon the six Gengs, it is called "Ying Huo entering Tai Bai." "Tai Bai entering Ying Huo" indicates that thieves and bandits are about to arrive; "Ying Huo entering Tai Bai" indicates that thieves and bandits are about to retreat. Bing governs "bei," meaning disorder and reversal, while Geng governs "ge," meaning obstruction. When Bing is on the Heaven Plate and Geng is on the Earth Plate, it is "bei"; when Geng is on the Heaven Plate and Gui is on the Earth Plate, it is "ge." When Bing is placed upon Tian Yi (the Chief Symbol), it is called "fu ni," and when Tian Yi is placed upon Bing, it is called "fei bei."
When the stem Geng is placed on the day stem, it is called "Fu Gan Ge"; when the day stem is placed on Geng, it is called "Fei Gan Ge." If they are separated by one trigram, it indicates fighting in the outskirts; if they are in the same trigram, it indicates fighting within the city and country. When Geng is placed on the chief symbol, it is called "Tian Yi Fu Gong"; when the chief symbol is placed on Geng, it is called "Tian Yi Fei Gong." When Geng is placed on Gui, it is called "Da Ge"; when Geng is placed on Ji, it is called "Xing Ge," both of which are most unfavorable for action. When Geng is placed on Ren, it is called "Shang Ge." Additionally, it is undesirable for Geng to meet another Geng in the year stem, month builder, day branch, or hour, resulting in "Sui Ge," "Yue Ge," "Ri Ge," and "Shi Ge." There is another special pattern: the six Geng stems must never be placed on the three marvels.
If you have to go to war during such an hour, you will not even be able to return with a single horse or wheel. When the Six Gui combines with the Six Ding, it is called "Teng She Tiao Jiao," and when the Six Ding combines with the Six Gui, it is called "Zhu Que Tou Jiang." When the Six Yi combines with the Six Xin, it is called "Qing Long Tao Zou," and when the Six Xin combines with the Six Yi, it is called "Bai Hu Chang Wang." Please take note, the above four combinations all belong toInauspicious Spirit, and you should not act rashly when encountering them in any affairs. When Bing combines with Jia, it is called "Fei Niao Die Xue," and when Jia combines with Bing, it is called "Qing Long Fan Shou." Only these two combinations belong to吉神, and using them for affairs will result in success in eight or nine out of ten cases.

Among the eight gates, if one encounters the Open Door, the Life Gate, and the Rest Gate, anything one does will be to one's liking. The Wound Gate is suitable for hunting and trapping, and pursuing will eventually lead to capture. The Du Gate is suitable for intercepting on the way and for concealing one's trail. The Jing Gate is suitable for submitting letters and breaking through enemy lines. The Jing Gate can capture criminals, win lawsuits, and gain reputation. If one asks about the Death Gate, it is only suitable for mourning, funerals, and carrying out executions. Among the nine stars, the Tianpeng, Tianren, Tianchong, Tianfu, and Tianqin are yang stars, while the Tianying, Tianrui, Tianzhu, and Tianxin are yin stars. The Tianfu, Tianqin, and Tianxin stars are the most auspicious, while the Tianchong and Tianren are only slightly auspicious and not suitable for everything to go smoothly.
The great凶 stars are Tianpeng and Tianrui, which are fundamentally not usable; the minor凶 stars are Tianying and Tianzhu, which are not sufficiently intelligent. However, if the minor凶 stars are in a time of no energy, they can turn into good fortune; if the great凶 stars are in a time of no energy, they become ordinary. If auspicious stars meet the旺 and 相 energies, they will be absolutely safe in doing anything and surely succeed; if they meet the 衰败 energies such as xiu, qiu, fei, and mei, it is advisable not to proceed further. To recognize the five elements associated with each of the nine stars, one must start from the eight trigrams and refer to the principles of the Yi hexagrams as drawn by Fuxi. The Tianpeng in the Kan trigram belongs to water, the Tianying in the Li trigram belongs to fire, and the central five trigrams together with the Kun and Gen trigrams are based on earth.
The Qian Palace and the Dui Palace belong to metal, while the Zhen Palace and the Xun Palace belong to wood. The concepts of prosperity, decline, rest, and captivity should be considered in terms of their relative strength. The month with the same Five Phases as the star is called "Xiang," and the month that generates the star is called "Wang." When encountering the parents' energy that nourishes me, it is called "Fei," when encountering the wealth energy that I overcome, it is called "Xiu," and when encountering the ghost energy that overcomes me, it is called "Qiu." This is indeed accurate. For example, the Tianpeng star, which belongs to water, has its Xiang energy in the first month of winter, October, and the second month of winter, November. Its Wang energy is in the first and second months of spring, when water generates wood. Its Xiu energy is in the fourth and fifth months of spring, when water overcomes fire. The other stars can be calculated in the same way. In urgent situations, use the nine gods; in calm situations, use the eight gates. Understanding "You San Bi Wu" and carefully considering the interactions will naturally make the heavenly way smooth and unobstructed.

When the ten heavenly stems are added to the chief symbol but are placed incorrectly, and then fall into a place of burial or weakness and confinement, even originally auspicious events will turn into dangerous ones. The vital energy of the ten heavenly stems used as the duty gate is most precious. Starting from the palace where Tianyi is located, nothing will be missed. "Tianmu" represents the guest side, and "Di'er" represents the host side. By using the six Jia in sequence to match, the reasoning will not be wrong. I urge all of you not to miss this profound secret. Once the nine palaces are thoroughly understood, one can assist a wise ruler. When a palace restrains a gate, it is not considered "pressure"; when a gate restrains the palace it is in, it is called "men pressure," which is the strongest. "Tianwang Sizhang" indicates a situation with no way out, but when it falls into the first or second palace, the net is spread low, allowing a path to escape.
When the heavenly net falls on the third and fourth palaces, it is difficult to avoid; when it falls on the eighth and ninth palaces, the net is high, allowing free movement east and west. The solar terms change continuously, and the timing is determined accordingly. One must thoroughly understand both the forward and reverse directions of Yang Dun and Yin Dun. The accumulation of the upper, middle, and lower trigrams forms the sixty Jiazi cycles, a principle that existed even before the formation of heaven and earth. Please all carefully examine the true secret verses in this song. If one is not a true sage, do not easily teach this to him.
The Essentials of Qimen Divination
The mysteries of the reversal and progression of Yang Dun and Yin Dun are endless. After the Winter Solstice, the sequence begins with Yang Dun starting from the first palace of Kan; after the Summer Solstice, the sequence begins with Yin Dun starting from the ninth palace of Li. As long as one thoroughly understands the principles of yin and yang, the movements of heaven and earth are all within one's grasp. The changes of heaven, earth, and humanity are divided into upper, middle, and lower trigrams. The eight trigrams are divided into eight doors of Dun Jia. The nine stars and the straight symbol move with the ten heavenly stems, while the duty gate always moves from the palace where Tianyi is located. The six instruments and the six Jia are actually one thing with two names—Jiazi is hidden in Wu, Jiaxu is hidden in Ji, and so on. The Three Marvels are the three stems Yi, Bing, and Ding. If the Three Marvels align with the Open Door, the Resting Door, or the Life Gate, it is a favorable door, suitable for travel.
Everything should be done in this direction without any adverse effects. If one understands the subtle principles, it will naturally be effective. The Chief Symbol counted forward three gates is "Liu He," and counted forward two gates is "Tai Yin," which must be remembered. The Chief Symbol counted backward one gate is "Jiu Tian," and counted backward two gates is "Jiu Di." Under "Jiu Di" one can hide and conceal, while under "Jiu Tian" one can display military strength. "Liu He" and "Tai Yin" are places for hiding and seeking refuge. In urgent situations, use the Nine Gods; in calm situations, use the Eight Doors. Understanding "You San Bi Wu" and carefully considering repeatedly, following the heavenly way will be beneficial. Although the above has already captured the subtlety of the Three Marvels, it is still better to also obtain "San Qi De Shi."
Having only the "command" (使) is not yet pure; if encountering the "five unfavorable times" (五不遇时), the brightness of the sun and moon will be harmed. When taking action, the most worrying situation is when the heavenly stem of the hour overcomes the heavenly stem of the day. Encountering the reverse chant (反吟) or hidden chant (伏吟) patterns is also inauspicious. For matters concerning capturing or hunting someone who is fleeing, one must choose a time with a proper pattern (格). For questioning about a traveler's news, using this method will not lead to error. When the three marvels (三奇) of the Big Dipper move over the six instruments (六仪) and meet with the "heavenly virtue" (天乙), it indicates something private. For capturing or apprehending someone, one must take the pattern where the heavenly stem of the hour overcomes the lower palace. For questioning about a traveler's news, one must encounter the three marvels. When the three marvels are above the six instruments, and the six instruments meet the five yang hours, these are all favorable signs.
From among the eight gates, find the favorable direction, and thus open the way for all matters, making everything appropriate. The five yang hours come first, followed by the five yin hours. Clearly distinguish which side is strong and which is weak. Remember well the five heavenly stems after the yin hours, as the six instruments added upon them bring no benefit. If the six instruments suddenly fall upon the third gate of Zhen, this is called 'striking punishment,' which must be remembered. When encountering 'striking punishment' or 'three marvels entering the tomb,' any action at that time is very dangerous. When Tai Bai enters Ying Huo, thieves will come; when Ying Huo enters Tai Bai, thieves will go away.
Bing governs "paradox," and Geng governs "obstruction": obstruction refers to blockage and block, while paradox refers to disorder andretrograde. When Geng is added to the day stem, it is called "hidden stem obstruction," and when the day stem is added to Geng, it is called "flying stem obstruction." When Geng is added to the chief symbol, it is called "heavenly master hidden palace," and when the chief symbol is added to Geng, it is called "heavenly master flying palace." When Geng is added to Ji, it is called "criminal obstruction," which is also considered a high level of obstruction in the hidden art; when Geng is added to Gui, it is called "doubtful obstruction on the road"; when Geng is added to Ren, it is called "minor obstruction." In addition, it is also considered unfavorable if Geng coincides with the flowing year, month builder, day branch, or hour stem. When these hours occur, it is most inauspicious, and no actions or military movements should be taken.
Bing combined with Jia is called "Flying Bird Falls into a Hole," while Jia combined with Bing is called "Azure Dragon Returns Its Head." Xin combined with Yi is called "White Tiger Runs Wild," while Yi combined with Xin is called "Azure Dragon Runs Away." Ding combined with Gui is called "Vermilion Bird Jumps into the River," while Gui combined with Ding is called "Winding Snake Twists and Turns." The Chief Symbol combined with Bing indicates a supportive assistant; the hour stem combined with the six Ding indicates the "Guarding Star" pattern. Bing combined with Wu and the Open Door is called "Heavenly Concealment," Yi combined with the Open Door is called "Earthly Concealment," and the Xiu Men receiving Ding or Yi with the Tai Yin is called "Human Concealment." The hour stem combined with Gui is called the "Four Nets Spread" pattern.
When the Tianpeng Star is placed above the Tianying Star, it is called "Fan Yin," and when Tianpeng is placed above Tianpeng, it is called "Fu Yin." Even if auspicious stars meet them, the outcome is not favorable; if malevolent stars meet them, the outcome becomes even worse. Among the nine stars, Tianfu, Tianchong, Tianren, Tianqin, and Tianxin are considered auspicious, while Tianpeng, Tianrui, Tianying, and Tianzhu are considered malevolent. Tianxin, Tianying, Tianzhu, and Tianrui are yin stars, while Tianchong, Tianfu, Tianqin, Tianren, and Tianpeng are yang stars. "Tianwang Sizhang" signifies a situation where there is no way out. The subtleties of yin and yang, in their forward and reverse movements, are endless. With the changing solar terms, the time is determined accordingly. On the winter solstice and summer solstice, the energy returns to the Kan palace and the Li palace respectively. The three yuan are connected using the methods of "Chao Shen" and "Jie Qi." The three marvels move through the six instruments, and the eight trigrams circulate through the nine palaces. As long as one thoroughly understands the principles of yin and yang, the waxing and waning of heaven and earth can be clearly discerned within one's palm.
