The Nine Palaces Flying Palms Diagram
Charting guides: Qi Men Dun Jia Chart
This is the "Border Nine Palaces" palm diagram. The mnemonic says "wild horse jumps over the stream," meaning when calculating, the fingers should jump over the palm and move along the edges; "when encountering寅, count pig and dog," meaning when reaching the寅 position, count the亥 (pig) and戌 (dog) branches as well; "one move passes one palace," meaning each time a new move is made, move to the next palace; "do not use亥, 子, and 丑," meaning the positions of亥, 子, and 丑 are left empty and not used. The arrangement in the diagram is: 兑 seven palace pairs with 申, 艮 eight palace pairs with 酉, 离 nine palace pairs with 戌, and the亥 position is left unused; 乾 six palace pairs with 未, and the子 position is unused; 中 five palace pairs with 午, and the丑 position is unused; 巽 four palace pairs with 巳, 震 three palace pairs with 辰, 坤 two palace pairs with 卯, and 坎 one palace pairs with 寅. When starting the calculation, follow this palm position order to rotate.
The method of intercalation for the super divine connection of the heavenly stems and earthly branches.
"The闰奇 has its own mysterious诀" means that the method of intercalation in the Qimen system has its own refined formula, which is "to intercalate by time"—using the extra remaining hours in a month to place the intercalary局. "The immortals do not explain clearly" means that previous generations kept their secrets and did not fully disclose them. In fact, the rule is as follows: intercalation should be set before the Winter Solstice and Summer Solstice. A month's solar term is based on thirty days and five hours and two moments. The full thirty days are divided into six局 (each five days), and the remaining five hours and two moments are used for intercalation. If the symbol head exceeds the solar term by more than nine days during the Grain in Ear or Great Snow solar terms, intercalation should be applied. Generally speaking, five days make one yuan, and one day consists of twelve hours.
"The 'Jia Ji two day stems are the head of the symbol' refers to the days with the day stem Jia or Ji being called 'symbol head,' which is the most important line of oral transmission. Intercalation is entirely based on the characters Jia and Ji: if the Jia Ji symbol head arrives before the solar term, it is called 'exceeding the god'; if the symbol head has not arrived but the solar term has already come, it is called 'receiving the breath'; if the symbol head and the solar term arrive on the same day, it is called 'correct transmission.' 'The upper division is set on Zi, Wu, Mao, You' means that if the day of the symbol head has the earthly branch Zi, Wu, Mao, or You, the upper division is used; if the earthly branch is Yin, Shen, Si, or Hai, the middle division is used; if the earthly branch is Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei, the lower division is used. In the phrase 'the festival connects with the symbol, and the symbol meets the festival,' the 'symbol' refers to the Jia Ji symbol head, and the 'festival' refers to the solar term. This passage is worth ten thousand taels of silver and is not easily revealed: if the symbol head arrives before the solar term, it is called 'exceeding'; if the symbol head arrives after the solar term, it is called 'receiving.' Understanding these two concepts of 'exceeding' and 'receiving' makes one a high-ranking master beyond the mountains."
The Six Jia are used for convenience.
The Dun Jia Classic says: Whenever there is any action, all matters should be directed towards the direction of the "Six Jia." One should call out the name of the Jia deity of that particular ten-day period and walk forward sixty steps, then turn left and enter the palace governed by "Tai Yin." Additionally, "Six Ding" is also called Tai Yin. Using this direction to meet a nobleman will surely bring joy; using it in battle will surely lead to victory. The deity of the Jiazi period is named "Wang Wenqing." In cases such as ascending the altar to appoint a general, issuing military orders, receiving a military token, the commander-in-chief planning strategies, giving orders to mobilize troops, or distributing stored provisions, the supreme commander should face the direction of Jiazi, call out the name "Wang Wenqing," walk sixty steps, then turn left and enter the palace governed by Tai Yin. In this way, all plans and actions will be as if aided by divine forces.
The deity for the Jiaxu decade is named "Xu He": it is favorable for clearing paths, cutting down forests, repairing roads, and diverting rivers. These activities align with natural order and will not cause damage. When performing such tasks, one should face the direction of Jiaxu and call out the name "Xu He," walk sixty steps, then turn left into the Taiyin Palace, and the path will naturally become clear. The deity for the Jiashen decade is named "Gai Xin": if one wishes to enter the mountains for hunting or trapping tigers, wolves, and other wild animals, one should face the direction of Jiashen and call out the name "Gai Xin," walk sixty steps, then turn left into the Taiyin Palace, and the beasts will remain still, allowing them to be captured easily.
The divine name for the Jiawu decade is "Lingguang": whenever setting up camps, arranging formations, patrolling for hunting, or engaging in battle, one should face the direction of Jiawu and call out the name "Lingguang." After walking sixty steps, turn left into the Taiyin Palace, and victory will surely be achieved. The divine name for the Jiachen decade is "Hanzhang": whenever seeking official positions, accepting military commands, governing the people, or going to take office, one should face the direction of Jiachen and call out the name "Hanzhang." After walking sixty steps, turn left into the Taiyin Palace, and one will not fail in official duties or bring regret. The divine name for the Jiayin decade is "Jianbing": whenever displaying military strength, boosting military preparedness, teaching formations, sweeping out bandits, marching out for campaigns, or attacking tyrants, one should face the direction of Jiayin and call out the name "Jianbing." After walking sixty steps, turn left into the Taiyin Palace, and thus, when traveling abroad or stabilizing the borders, bandits will naturally not start any disturbances.
The six at the top of the Six甲 each have their own domain, and they are all revered deities among the Five Phases. Their nature is inherently quiet and peaceful. When they act, if one writes a character that can control the corresponding element on the palm of the hand, it will bring good fortune. This is because the Six甲 internally govern the Five Phases, and their movements and stillness have no fixed direction. The Five Phases constantly replace and overcome each other, following the principles of mutual generation and mutual restriction. Since the left hand symbolizes heaven and the right hand symbolizes earth, and spirits prefer quietness, writing a character that represents the controlling relationship among the Five Phases encompasses the principles of transformation. For example, if one is about to go to war, the commander can write the character 「strong」 with cinnabar on the palm of his left hand, then grasp his hand tightly and walk forward sixty steps before turning left into the Taiyin Palace. This is the way to overpower the weak and achieve victory.
If one goes to visit a nobleman, seeks an official post, or visits a county magistrate or county chief who receives a salary of two thousand stones, write the character 「天」 on the left palm. If one engages in business, trades goods, makes friends, gets married, or signs a contract, write the character 「和」. If one goes into the mountains to hunt or hunts in the fields, write the character 「狮」. If one leads laborers or is in the midst of people, write the character 「强」. If one crosses a river or manages water control, write the character 「土」 or 「戊」. If one encounters turbulent winds and waves, and the boat is about to capsize, especially avoid the 「八风」 and days that offend the water dragon, 「招摇」 and 「咸池」, which are ominous days. In such cases, write the character 「戊」. If one travels in the mountains or seeks spiritual guidance, write the character 「龙」, and the dragon spirit will not stir. After writing, proceed forward sixty steps and turn left to enter the Tai Yin Palace when the 「值符」 is present in that direction. Doing so ensures harmony with the heavens — this is the subtle application of the Five Phases controlling each other.
Volume Twenty-Four
When going out, call the divine character into the Taiyin.
Whenever going on a long journey, one should face the direction they are heading, and call out the name of the deity associated with that direction. Then walk sixty steps and turn left to enter the 'Tai Yin' palace. In Yang Dun, the second palace before the Chief Symbol is considered the Tai Yin palace. In Yin Dun, the second palace after the Chief Symbol is considered the Tai Yin palace. Additionally, the 'Liudinh' also counts as Tai Yin. Calling out the deity's name refers to using the hour of the day to select the name of the nine stars from the Heaven Plate. The names of the nine stars are: Tianpeng is named Zi Qin, Tianrui is named Zi Cheng, Tianchong is named Zi Qiao, Tianfu is named Zi Qing, Tianqin is named Zi Gong, Tianzhu is named Zi Shen, Tianren is named Zi Wei, Tianying is named Zi Wei.
For example: On the first day of the winter solstice, using the Yang Dun arrangement, if it is the time of day known as Bingyin, which occurs on a Jia or Ji day, then the "six Bing" are located in the Gen palace. At this time, the Tianpeng star, led by the Jiazi戊 on the Heaven Plate, is added to the eighth palace. If one wishes to travel in the northeast direction, they should verbally call out the name of Tianpeng, "Ziqin," and walk sixty steps into the Taiyin palace. At this point, retreat two palaces, so Taiyin is located in the Xun palace (note: according to the nine palace arrangement, this should actually be the Kan palace), and then turn left towards the southeast direction—other situations are handled in a similar manner.
When entering or exiting, call upon the ten heavenly stems associated with the twelve earthly branches.
When going out or engaging in activities, one should refer to the Heavenly Stem corresponding to the current hour in the twelve Earthly Branches and call the name of the deity associated with that stem. Each Heavenly Stem has a specific title and deity name: Jia is called "Heavenly Blessing," and its deity is Wang Wenqing; Yi is called "Heavenly Virtue," and its deity is Long Wenqing; Bing is called "Heavenly Authority," and its deity is Du Tangzhongqing; Ding is called "Jade Maiden," also known as "Heavenly Maiden," and its deity is Ji You Tian; Wu is called "Heavenly Martial," and its deity is Si Ma Yang; Ji is called "Bright Hall," and its deity is Ji You Qing; Geng is called "Heavenly Punishment," and its deity is Zou Yuanyouyang, or alternatively Guo Yangzhi; Xin is called "Heavenly Court," and its deity is Gao Zi Qiang; Ren is called "Heavenly Prison," and its deity is Wang Lü Qing; Gui is called "Heavenly Jail," and its deity is Yuan Qiang, or alternatively Yuan Zi Guang.
Six Jia Secret Spirits
Each of the six Jia (Heavenly Stems) is paired with a "Yin Shen" (shadow spirit) for each ten-day period, which corresponds to the hidden Ding Qi (odd spirit) of that period. The Yin Shen of the Jiazi (Jia Stem and Zi Branch) period is Dingmao, with a rabbit head and human body, named Konglin Zhu, with the courtesy name Wenbo. The Yin Shen of the Jiaxu period is Dingchou, with a bull head and human body, named Liangqiu Shu, also written as Liangqiu or Liangqiu Zhong, but it is unclear which is correct. The Yin Shen of the Jiashen period is Dinghai, with a pig head and human body, named Lu Cheng, with the courtesy name Wengong, also written as Lu Cheng. The Yin Shen of the Jiawu period is Dingyou, with a chicken head and human body, named Fei Yang, with the courtesy name Wentong, also written as Guiyang. The Yin Shen of the Jiachen period is Dingwei, with a sheep head and human body, named Wang Quqi, with the courtesy name Wenqing. The Yin Shen of the Jiayin period is Dingsi, with a snake head and human body, named Xu Xianchi, with the courtesy name Jüqing. When invoking the spirits, the names should be called in this order.
Dun Jia Gate and Deity Names (for military actions and suitable use)
Dun Jia is practiced over a period of six decades, each with its own name for the "door god" and "house god." When going out to fight, one must call upon these names and perform a specific action. For the Jiazi decade, the door god is Xu Yi and the house god is Gong Sun Qi; one should unfasten the collar and leave as a good omen. For the Jiaxu decade, the door god is Tian Ke and the house god is Xu Ke; one should look up to the sky and shout loudly as a good omen. For the Jiashen decade, the door god is Sima Guang and the house god is Shi Zhan; one should unfasten the collar and leave as a good omen. For the Jiawu decade, the door god is Shi Jia and the house god is Zi Ke; one should unfasten the collar, shake off one's spirit, and leave as a good omen. For the Jiachen decade, the door god is Gong Sun Cuo and the house god is Sima Sheng; one should undo one's hair, re-braid it, and then leave as a good omen. For the Jiayin decade, the door god is Gong Sun Guang and the house god is Sima Qiang; one should unfasten the waistband and leave as a good omen.
The general's movements in and out of the camp and military operations, regardless of the number of soldiers and horses, must follow a definite method for both advancing and stopping. The method is based on the number six. When the general has arranged the soldiers properly, he should turn left and enter the Taiyin palace, calling out the names of the door god and household god, and reciting a spell: "某某 is in urgent trouble, please assist me and protect me, hide me so that enemies do not harm me; cover me and shield me, so that all weapons such as swords, spears, and halberds break and do not fall upon me. Those who block me will die, those who watch me will perish; let the enemy be confused and dazed, silently looking at me, and be deceived by me, disturbing their spirits so that they dare not attack." After reciting the spell, the soldiers are ordered to turn left and proceed straight ahead, not looking back, and hide beneath the direction of "Liu Gui." For example, in the Jiazi decade, the position of Liu Gui is in the You direction, so they hide in the You direction; similarly, other decades follow the same pattern.
The Six Jia Secret Symbols Method
The Dun Jia Classic says: The person in command must practice the method of "Six Jia Yin Fu" in order to resist the enemy, so that the enemy will be destroyed by themselves. Therefore, it also says: It is better to give someone a thousand taels of silver than to teach the method of the Six Jia Yin Shen to another person. In the world, this art is the most effective, and it should be kept in the Golden Chest and cherished in the heart. It should not be transmitted to those who are not worthy, and must never be easily revealed. Those who steal to look at this method will lose their eyesight, and those who steal to read this method will contract an epidemic. If one wishes to create the Six Jia Yin Fu, he must fast with sincere heart to seek the blessing of heaven. If there is any impurity or offense, the symbol will not be pure, and how can it be effective?
In making the Yin Fu, one should choose the time of a lunar eclipse, and cut down mulberry wood or Du Jing type of timber, taking the branches from the shaded side. The heartwood of the cypress tree can also be used. The wooden tablets should all be made nine inches long, two inches wide, and three parts thick. Use cinnabar to draw the image of the deity on them, and write the name of the deity below the image—the image and name drawn and written are those of the six Yin deities mentioned earlier, namely Dingmao Yin Shen Konglin clan. After the符 is completed, wrap it in a red silk bag and have the commander carry it with him. When going to battle, take the符 of the Yin deity of the current ten-day period, point at the enemy through the bag, and the enemy will naturally scatter and dare not fight against us.
When taking the symbolic wood, one must first perform purification and fasting, preparing one liter of wine, three jin of dried deer meat, and a small cup of salt. While reciting the incantation, one should also perform worship. Use white reed grass to make a seat, face north, and bow twice. The incantation should be recited in front of the Du Jing tree, with the words: All spirits and deities, accompanying you in your wanderings, capable of transforming themselves; wherever you point, there is no one who will not submit. Now I respectfully offer clear wine, delicious dried meat, and salt, hoping the deities will partake. After finishing the incantation, bow twice again, repeating the incantation three times in total, then proceed to cut the wood. When cutting the wood, avoid any contamination or proximity to unclean things, and ensure that women and chickens and dogs do not see the act.
The ritual for holding this talisman is: first, observe a five-day fast, take a bath with fragrant water, and eat only clean vegetarian food, avoiding the five pungent herbs such as garlic and leeks. Once the talisman image is completed, perform the ceremony at midnight on a day when the heavenly stem is Jia. Set up a square altar measuring one zhang two chi on each side. Outside the altar, build a mound of soil twelve zhang high, and carve twelve gates corresponding to the twelve earthly branches. Make flagpoles from bamboo, three or nine chi long, and arrange them in the four directions according to the terrain. Bring the six Yin talismans onto the altar and place them in the six directions. Then spread five-colored silk cloth three chi five cun long on the altar, and place three cups of wine, two pounds of dried meat, and one measure of salt on it. Lay white reed grass as a mat, kneel facing north, and call out the names of the four directional earthly branches, the six Jia and six Yin deities, as well as the names of the door and household gods, one by one, and offer them worship.
For example, in the Jiazi decade, the yin spirit is Dingmao. Since Mao is located in the direction of Due East, one should bow twice towards the east and verbally invoke the name of this yin spirit, offering prayers to it. After the ritual, one should sew a red silk bag to contain the yin symbol, carrying it frequently on one's person; thus, various ghosts and malevolent spirits will not dare to harass. When facing an enemy in battle, one can point the yin symbol at the enemy, causing them to disperse and collapse. If circumstances are urgent and there is no time to build an altar, one may simply draw a circle on the ground in the courtyard or an open area outdoors to serve as the altar, and perform this ritual as well.
The Real Person Steps on the Stars Method
The "Step Star Classic" says: By stepping on the Big Dipper, one can communicate with the divine. One should choose a place at midnight under the stars, draw the figure of the seven stars of the Big Dipper on the ground, with each star three feet apart. The nine stars are arranged starting from the "Heavenly Gang" position with the Greedy Wolf Star, then arranged in order; when reaching before the Dipper's handle, they are arranged in reverse order, and finally stand upright at the position of the Right Assistant Star. Then chant the incantation for stepping on the stars. When chanting the line about the Right Assistant Star, one must first lift the left foot, and step lightly on each star position while chanting the incantation, alternating left and right feet, stepping on all seven stars. Practicing this method as described for one hundred days will naturally allow communication with the divine. This method must be kept secret and not disclosed; if passed on to an unqualified person, calamity will affect nine generations of ancestors; anyone who secretly looks at this method will surely lose their eyesight.
The incantation recited is as follows: The central pivot of the Big Dipper is refined and subtle, governing the twelve divine spirits of the hours; it receives the radiance of the stars, and the image of the Black Tortoise follows and is arranged. The star energy is misty, like floating clouds; the seven stars change, corresponding to the heavenly timing. Understanding this change, one can discern fortune and misfortune; entering the Dipper mansion, one crosses through the "Heavenly Pass." In harmony with the musical scales, one regulates the energies of Jia and Yi; stepping on Tianying, one crosses over Tianren. The deep, cold abyss is immeasurable, where one can hide; standing at Tianzhu, one guards the heavenly center. From here, one crosses over to Tianqin; leaning on Tianfu, one looks afar at Tianchong; entering Tianrui, one exits Tianpeng. The path of the Dipper is now open; the soft and the strong are in balance; adding blessings and longevity, they are passed down through generations; from the darkness to the light, one lives for ten thousand years. So be it, as per the command of the law.
Whenever one has an affair and needs to go out, one should call the name of the "Yünu" (Lady Jade) of the current ten-day period. For example, if the ten-day period begins with Jiazi, the hidden spirit is Dingmao, so one should leave from the direction where Dingmao is located, and recite the incantation: "Dingmao Yünu, protect me and safeguard me, do not let anyone harm me; whoever looks at me shall become blind, and whoever listens in on me shall suffer misfortune in return." After reciting the incantation, one should leave immediately and must not look back. The Yünu deity will then accompany and protect the person all the way, greatly benefiting from her grace. If the ten-day period begins with Jiaxu, one should instead call Dingchou Yünu, and the words of the incantation remain the same. The same method applies to all other ten-day periods.
The divine incantation for "Yi Qi" is: The deity of heavenly authority, who exterminates ghosts and bandits; the six Yi deities assist from the side, and the heavenly way praises my virtue. Whatever I do today, I conquer without fail. So be it as per the decree of the Mysterious Lady of the Ninth Heaven. The divine incantation for "Bing Qi" is: I use virtue to assist heaven, with divine generals guarding me before and after; the Azure Dragon and White Tiger stand on both sides to drive away evil spirits, the Vermilion Bird leads the way in front, allowing me to meet those I seek. Heaven's divine power aids me, and the six Bing deities remove my ailments. So be it as per the decree of the Mysterious Lady of the Ninth Heaven.
The divine incantation for "Ding Qi" is: I am the disciple of the Heavenly Emperor, commanding and deploying heavenly soldiers, rewarding the virtuous and punishing the wicked, moving in and out between the underworld. Those who come to guard me are the Six Ding Jade Girls; anyone who dares to offend me will naturally vanish without a trace. Urgently as the decree of the Mysterious Lady of the Ninth Heaven. The divine incantation for "Guxu" is: The heavens and earth are all alive, O Guxu deity, O Guxu deity, the deity's will is just like my own will. Please do not leave me. Urgently as the decree. Whenever reciting these incantations, one must keep walking forward, not looking back, and stop only after walking sixty steps.
When the Three Marvels emerge and the auspicious gate appears, recite this incantation.
The Dun Jia Classic says: When departing from the 'Six Yi' gate, take three steps of Yu, reciting the incantation: White Tiger, White Tiger, clear the path for me; on this noble road ahead, do not make any mistakes; virtuous people come to assist, and from the dark and obscure there are divine beings who protect and assist. As urgently as the decree of the Lady of the Ninth Heaven. When departing from the 'Six Bing' gate, also take three steps of Yu, reciting the incantation: Ahead, the Heavenly Gang star proclaims its might, I shall follow the Azure Dragon and White Tiger, to eliminate the Heavenly Thief and Heavenly Demon; those who dare to disobey shall be subdued under the Heavenly Axe. As urgently as the decree of the Lady of the Ninth Heaven.
Leave the door of 「Six Bing」 (according to the order, this should be the door of Six Ding) and take three steps of Yu, reciting the incantation: "O Divine Lady, O Divine Lady, your name is the Divine Mother; call upon her and ask her, and she will point out the direction I should go. She often enters the handle of the Dipper into the body of the Dipper, where in the cold abyss there grow many divine herbs; break off one branch to cover yourself, and you will not be startled or make a mistake. So be it as the decree of the Supreme Lady of the Ninth Heaven." The scripture also says: when departing from the auspicious gate of the Three Marvels, if the matter is urgent and there is no time to recite the incantation, one may go directly, as long as one is sincere in faith, it will certainly be effective, but one must remember not to look back.
Whenever reciting a spell, one must perform the Yu steps, and at the same time use the right hand to draw four vertical lines and five horizontal lines in the air or on the ground. Then recite: "Four vertical lines and five horizontal lines, the Six Jia and Six Ding; the Black Tortoise carries my path, Chiyou clears away weapons and soldiers. The Southern Dipper hangs on my left, the Seven Stars hang on my right; all evil spirits are destroyed, ghosts vanish without a trace. The Heavenly Stems dare not offend, the Earthly Branches dare not interfere; the Supreme Lord has issued an order here, I now issue the command and carry it out immediately. Entering water will not drown me, entering fire will not burn me; those who defy me will die, those who obey me will live; those who block me will die, those who spy on me will become blind. Urgently obey the command of the Supreme Lord, the Iron Master of the Tao, the Heavenly Emperor's decree." After reciting, proceed forward, and while exiting through the door, recite the divine spell of Yi Qi, Bing Qi, or Ding Qi, reciting while walking, and remember not to look back.
When drawing four vertical lines and five horizontal lines, one must also distinguish between odd and even days. On odd days, the five horizontal lines are drawn east-west and the four vertical lines are drawn north-south. On even days, the five horizontal lines are drawn north-south and the four vertical lines are drawn east-west. The incantation recited is: "Yuwang opens the way for me, removing obstacles; I now obey the command to travel. Four vertical and five horizontal lines are here, Chiyou prepares my weapons. Those who collide with me will die; those who avoid me will live. I travel throughout the world, yet still return safely to my homeland. Please, the Southern Dipper's Six Stars and the Northern Dipper's Seven Stars descend. I obey the command of Laojun, the Supreme Elder. Urgent as the law commands." While reciting the incantation, the left hand should be placed on the character representing the current day's earthly branch, and the right hand should draw the horizontal lines according to the style of Ziwen's script. The two incantations are very similar and either can be used at will.
Yùnǚ Fǎn Bì Jú
The "Yùnǚ Fǎn Bì Jú" (Lady Jade Reverse Closure) determines the positions of Yùnǚ (Lady Jade), Tianmen (Heavenly Gate), and Dihù (Earthly Gate) based on the Day Branch. On a Zi day, Yùnǚ is in the Geng direction, Tianmen is in the Bing direction, and Dihù is in the Yi direction; on a Chou day, Yùnǚ is in the Xin direction, Tianmen is in the Bing direction, and Dihù is in the Yi direction; on a Yin day, Yùnǚ is in the Qian direction, Tianmen is in the Bing direction, and Dihù is in the Geng direction; on a Mao day, Yùnǚ is in the Ren direction, Tianmen is in the Geng direction, and Dihù is in the Ding direction; on a Chen day, Yùnǚ is in the Gui direction, Tianmen is in the Geng direction, and Dihù is in the Ding direction; on a Si day, Yùnǚ is in the Gen direction, Tianmen is in the Geng direction, and Dihù is in the Ren direction. The terms Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui, etc., refer to the heavenly stems located on the 24 mountain directions of the compass, not the Day Branch's stem.
Then comes the next six days: on the day of Wu, Yu Nu is in the direction of Jia, Tian Men is in the direction of Ren, and Di Hu is in the direction of Xin; on the day of Wei, Yu Nu is in the direction of Yi, Tian Men is in the direction of Ren, and Di Hu is in the direction of Xin; on the day of Shen, Yu Nu is in the direction of Xun, Tian Men is in the direction of Ren, and Di Hu is in the direction of Jia; on the day of You, Yu Nu is in the direction of Bing, Tian Men is in the direction of Jia, and Di Hu is in the direction of Gui; on the day of Xu, Yu Nu is in the direction of Ding, Tian Men is in the direction of Jia, and Di Hu is in the direction of Gui; on the day of Hai, Yu Nu is in the direction of Kun, Tian Men is in the direction of Jia, and Di Hu is in the direction of Bing. These twelve days complete a cycle. When traveling, one should follow the direction corresponding to the day, entering from Di Hu, exiting through Tian Men, and departing in the direction of Yu Nu.
Whenever a Yang Dun or Yin Dun layout is established but there are no Three Marvels and auspicious gates available for entry and exit, this method of the "Jade Maiden Reverse Closure" is used to determine the direction for entry and exit. By adhering to the correct principles, auspicious outcomes can be achieved. The person in command must understand this method to ensure complete security. The term "no Three Marvels" refers to situations where there are only Three Marvels without an auspicious gate to match, or only auspicious gates without the presence of Three Marvels. Both situations are considered as having no available Three Marvels.
The Method of Concealment and Hidden Movement
Wu Zisuxu said: If one wishes to conceal his form and avoid detection, he should proceed in sequence through the "Azure Dragon" - which is the position of the Six Jia, then through the "Peng Star" - the position of the Six Yi, then through the "Bright Hall" - the position of the Six Bing, then hide in the "Taiyin" - the position of the Six Ding, then exit from the "Heavenly Gate" - the position of the Six Wu, and enter from the "Earthly Gate" - the position of the Six Ji. He should then attack the "Heavenly Punishment" - the position of the Six Geng, judge the "Heavenly Court" - the position of the Six Xin, and control the "Heavenly Prison" - the position of the Six Ren. Then take a piece of grass and break it into two halves; one half should be placed over the person's philtrum, and the other half should be taken into the "Heavenly Repository" - the position of the Six Gui. He should then move secretly from beneath the Heavenly Repository towards the direction of the "Month Aversion." The Month Aversion begins in the戌 position in the first lunar month and moves in reverse order each month. The place of concealment can also be aligned with the "Heavenly Joy."
For example, on a day when the heavenly stem is Jia, during the Jiazi hour, if one wishes to hide and conceal oneself, one should start from Jiazi, pass through Chou, move through Yin, hide in Mao, exit from Chen, and enter from Si. Then take a branch of grass, break it into two halves, place one half in the direction of Mao, and then enter the direction of You. In this way, one's coming and going will not be seen. When passing through the position of Taiyin, recite the incantation: "Heaven overturns and earth overturns, nine paths are all blocked; whoever comes to harass me, stops here; whoever looks at me or chases me, all perish." I obey the command of the Lady of the Ninth Heaven, the Supreme Mother of the Dao. After reciting the incantation, proceed directly to the position of Tiancang, and do not look back. Additionally, Geng is called "Tianyu" (Heavenly Prison), Xin is called "Tianting" (Heavenly Court), and Ren is called "Tianlao" (Heavenly Prison). These three directions should be avoided, and one must not confront them head-on, otherwise one may be captured and bound.
Method of Divination for Lost Paths
The Duke of Yellow Stone said: When traveling and encountering three forks in the road and unsure which path to take, use calculation to determine. The method is to add the "Month General" of the current month to the hour of the divination and turn out the Heaven Plate. Then observe where the "Heavenly Gang" deity falls: if the Heavenly Gang falls on one of the four Clasps positions, take the left path; if it falls on one of the four Seasons positions, take the right path; if it falls on one of the four Middle positions, take the middle path. The four Middle positions are Zi, Wu, Mao, You; the four Clasps are Yin, Shen, Si, Hai; the four Seasons are Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei.
Heaven's eye, Earth's ear
The Dun Jia Classic says: "Heaven's Eye" belongs to the guest side, and "Earth's Eye" belongs to the host side. Using the six Jia to calculate each ten-day period, the reasoning is entirely accurate. I advise scholars not to regard it merely as a mysterious trick, but rather to truly understand the nine palaces thoroughly in order to assist an enlightened leader. In terms of fixed directions,卯 is "Heaven's Eye," and酉 is "Earth's Ear." According to the divine positions in Dun Jia: the position of the six Jia is "Azure Dragon," the position of the six Ding is "Heaven's Eye," the position of the six Gui is "Earth's Ear," also called "Huagai," and the position of the six Wu is "Heaven's Gate," while the position of the six Ji is "Earth's Gate." Regarding the Jiazi ten-day period, in the six Jia cycle,庚 is "Heaven's Eye,"戊 is "Earth's Ear," and丙 is the position of "Three Punishments," which relates to military conflicts. For example, in the Jiazi ten-day period, if one enters the camp from the卯 direction, the卯 direction is precisely where the six Ding is located.
If one wishes to attack an enemy's camp secretly and without being detected, they should enter from the position of the Six Ding or from the position of Tai Yin. They may also enter from the directions of Tian Mu and Di Er. In general, any attack on an enemy's camp that comes from the directions of Tian Mu, Di Er, Tian Men, Di Hu, Qing Long, Hua Gai, and Jiu Tian will be auspicious.
Nine Victory Methods
The Yellow Emperor said: When leading an army, one should face the "earth ear" and back to the "heaven eye." Within the sixty-day cycle, each day has its own heaven eye and earth ear: In the Jiazi cycle, the heaven eye is at Gengwu and the earth ear is at Wuchen; in the Jiaxu cycle, the heaven eye is at Gengchen and the earth ear is at Wuyin; in the Jiashen cycle, the heaven eye is at Gengyin and the earth ear is at Wuzi; in the Jiawu cycle, the heaven eye is at Gengzi and the earth ear is at Wuxu; in the Jiachen cycle, the heaven eye is at Gengxu and the earth ear is at Wushen; in the Jiayin cycle, the heaven eye is at Gengshen and the earth ear is at Wuwu. Thus, the heaven eye is always the branch where the Geng stem falls in the current cycle, and the earth ear is always the branch where the Wu stem falls in the current cycle. When arranging the formation, one should follow this to determine the direction to face, which is called the "nine victories" method.
Divination by Shell Burning
Take a large red snail from the field. When catching it, avoid being seen by women, people in mourning, or chickens and dogs. If you wish to predict the outcome beforehand, take two snails and place them in a dish. Draw a straight line in the dish, dividing it into two halves, with the left half representing your side and the right half representing the enemy's side. Fill the dish with water about one inch deep, and mark each snail. Then recite a spell: "Snails, snails, you know about wind and rain; if the enemy comes to attack, you should crawl into my side. If the snails remain still, the wind and rain will not fall upon us. If the enemy does not come, then each side will defend its own territory." After reciting the spell, wait until morning to observe. Judge according to the following: if the snail representing the enemy crawls into your side, do not fight the enemy and should instead hold your ground; if your snail crawls into the enemy's side, you should attack quickly.
When observing the direction the snail's head is facing, it should also be interpreted according to the four seasons. In spring, if the snail's head faces east, it is highly favorable; facing south indicates disturbance; facing west suggests being attacked by enemies; facing north is minor good fortune. In summer, facing east is minor good fortune; facing south is highly favorable; facing west indicates enemies attacking; facing north suggests great fear. In autumn, facing west is highly favorable; facing south indicates assistance from divine beings; facing east is highly auspicious and brings wealth; facing north although victory is possible, it is still advisable to adopt a defensive stance. In winter, facing north is highly favorable; facing west indicates peace; facing south suggests enemies retreating on their own; facing east indicates minor alarm, and it is advisable to remain steadfast for good fortune.
The divination should also be interpreted according to the Heavenly Stem of the day of the divination. On days with the Heavenly Stem Jia or Yi, if the snail's head faces east, enemies will arrive urgently and it is not advisable to fight; if it faces south, enemies will arrive within five days; if it faces west, enemies will arrive fourteen days later; if it faces north, enemies will not come. On days with the Heavenly Stem Bing or Ding, if the snail's head faces south, enemies will retreat nine days later; if it faces west, enemies will retreat seven days later; if it faces north, enemies will arrive that day, and if there is a battle, the side of the diviner will win; if it faces east, enemies will scatter. On days with the Heavenly Stem Wu or Ji, both sides should be advised to hold their positions. On days with the Heavenly Stem Geng or Xin, if the snail's head faces west, the enemy will be in a stalemate; if it faces north, enemies will scatter; if it faces south, enemies will come and then leave; if it faces east, enemies will attack and there will be a major battle. On days with the Heavenly Stem Ren or Gui, if the snail's head faces south, enemies will not be able to win and will retreat; if it faces west, enemies will not come; if it faces east, both sides will hold their positions; if it faces north, it is advisable to seek peace and harmony.
