The Eight Gates and Their Mutual Influence: General Outline

Open Door is defeated by the response.

"Opening Door" if it can illuminate the direction of activity, will bring all servants, cattle, and sheep back within a hundred days; wealth, marriage, and land will all enter the house, making the residence prosperous and the family wealthy; the property will attract people belonging to the five tones of the scale of Shang, and people will definitely come to offer their services in the years of Si, You, and Chou; descendants will inherit the family's blessings and continue the lineage, receiving many official positions from the court, wearing purple robes and tying golden sashes, and returning home having been blessed by the imperial grace. Someone asked: "Opening Door belongs to the metal element in the Five Phases. Metal is the killing energy in the universe, which is the time when all things wither and die. Why does it say it is auspicious?" Qu Xuanshen answered: "Although the metal energy of Opening Door is indeed in the time when all things are killed, people do not realize that after all things are killed, they will revive again."

The "Open Door" is associated with the Qian trigram, which contains the亥 water. The Qian trigram also incorporates the stems Jia and Ren. When metal moves, it generates water, and water nurtures all things, making it the beginning of growth, hence called the "Heavenly Gate," which is auspicious. If "Open Door" combines with the Yi qi, it is called "Heavenly Concealment," capable of using the essence of the sun to conceal traces. If it combines with the Bing qi, it can use the essence of the moon to conceal. If it combines with the Ding qi, it can use the Taiyin to conceal. Any plan should be conducted properly and openly, with official matters proceeding in accordance with it, leading to all kinds of good fortune and peace. If used for private affairs, it will certainly lead to leaks and result in misfortune.

The Open Door is favorable when it falls in the Qian or Dui trigrams, which is considered mutual harmony. If it falls in the Kan trigram, it is considered strong energy, as metal and water generate each other, like a mother caring for her child, thus it is auspicious. If one travels from the Open Door direction, walking four or forty miles, one will see animals like pigs or rats. Walking sixty miles will result in encountering a nobleman's carriage and also meeting with food and drink. If the Open Door falls in the Gen trigram, it is considered burial, and if it falls in the Zhen trigram, it is considered door pressure, both of which are considered unfavorable. If it falls in the Xun trigram, it is considered reverse chant; if it falls in the Li trigram, metal is overcome by fire, and these positions are all unfavorable. For someone traveling from the Open Door direction, encountering a nobleman on horseback after thirty miles is auspicious, and encountering pigs, horses, and having food and drink after forty miles is also auspicious. If the Yi odd is present in this door, the external sign is seeing a nobleman wearing red clothes; if the Bing odd is present, the external sign is seeing an old man with a staff; if the Ding odd is present, the external sign is seeing someone holding bamboo or wood, all of which are auspicious signs.

The "static response" of the Open Door (开门) refers to the matters indicated when the door is combined with another door. Open Door combined with Open Door indicates encountering a nobleman, finding treasure, and having good fortune in wealth. Combined with Rest Door (休门), it indicates meeting a nobleman and good fortune in wealth, and is especially suitable for opening a shop or engaging in business, which will be highly beneficial. Combined with Life Gate (生门), it indicates meeting a nobleman and all endeavors and aspirations will be fulfilled. Combined with Injury Door (伤门), it indicates change, alteration, and relocation, which are all unfavorable. Combined with Du Door (杜门), it indicates losing things and minor misfortune related to seals and documents. Combined with Jing Gate (景门), it indicates meeting a nobleman, but it is unfavorable for matters concerning documents. Combined with Death Door (死门), it indicates legal disputes and worries, starting with sorrow and ending with joy. Combined with Jing Door (惊门), it indicates all affairs being unfavorable.
