Zhen's Forest (the 64th hexagram Zhen)

復　北虜匈奴，數侵邊境。左衽為長，國猶未慶。

The hexagram of节 (Restraint) repeats. The northern Xiongnu have repeatedly invaded the borders, and the customs of the夷狄 (barbarian tribes), characterized by left-shoulder clothing, have become dominant. The country thus has not yet reached a point of celebration. Confucius said, "Without Guan Zhong, I would have been hair-loose and with the left sleeve exposed," as recorded in the Analects of Confucius, Volume 14. This line indicates that the state faces persistent external threats and the orthodox culture is suppressed. The interpreter should be particularly cautious about the border areas and the critical points, and one should not yet speak of joy.

旡妄　續事康域，針折不成。嬰兒短舌，說辭無名。（一作：徵不以理，辭乃無名。縱獲臣子，伯功不成。）

The section has no falsehood. One wishes to continue matters in a stable place, but the needle is broken, so mending is impossible; it is like an infant with a short tongue, speaking unclearly and unable to express clearly. This oracle indicates a lack of ability to continue, and difficulty in expressing oneself. Any attempt to resume old matters or to plead one's case will not be effective. The person seeking the oracle should prepare new tools and choose another messenger; forcing the matter will only lead to failure.

大畜　景星明堂，麟遊鳳翔。仁施大行，頌聲作興。

The great accumulation of the section signifies auspicious signs. The bright star appears over the Bright Hall, qilin wander gracefully and phoenixes fly in the sky. Beneath benevolent governance, the people sing praises. The bright star and qilin and phoenix are all omens of peace and prosperity, as mentioned in the "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Offices." This indicates that Lin Da Ji is a sign of prominent virtue and widespread reputation. Those who consult the oracle are in harmony with the people's will, thus achieving both fame and fortune.

頤　文明之世，銷鋒鑄耜。以道順昌，百王不易。（一作：焚膏銷鋒，鎮壓危凶。招來文德，君安其國。）

The hexagram "Jie Zhi Yi" (Rest and Enjoyment). In an era of cultural prosperity, weapons were melted down and recast into farming tools; by following the right path, the world became harmonious and flourishing, and for generations of emperors, this method remained unchanged. The "Book of Han" records that the Qin dynasty destroyed weapons, but this passage reverses that idea for agricultural use. This refers to Lin Dagji, who advocates for reducing military efforts and promoting culture, transforming conflict into sustenance. Those who interpret this should encourage the transformation of weapons into means of livelihood, for this is the way to ensure long-term stability.

大過　鳥飛無羽，雞鬥折距。徒自長嗟，誰肯為侶。（一作：不順其德，自為凶咎。）

The divination indicates a great excess of the principle of "section" (节). A bird wants to fly but lacks feathers, a rooster wants to fight but has broken its spurs; it can only sigh alone, and no one is willing to accompany it. This indicates that the subject is in a state of complete loss of support and isolation. The person consulting the oracle currently lacks precisely what is most essential. Forced competition will only cause self-harm. It is advisable first to replenish what is lacking, and then to consider companionship and a way forward.

坎　群隊虎狼，囓彼牛羊。道路不通，妨農害商。

The hexagram is Kan. A group of tigers and wolves tear at cattle and sheep; the roads are blocked, hindering farming and harming trade. This indicates that the forest is plagued by bandits, roads are cut off, and the occupant's business is obstructed by external forces. It is advisable to suspend travel and remain at home, waiting until the roads are clear and people are peaceful before attempting recovery.

離　商伯沉醉，庶兄奔走。淫女蕩夫，仁德並孤。

The hexagram indicates separation. In the Shang dynasty, the feudal lords, known as fangbo, became addicted to alcohol, and the brothers of Wei Zi, who were of lesser birth, all left. Immoral women and reckless men were in power, and the virtuous were all isolated. This refers to King Zhou's loss of virtue and Wei Zi's departure, as recorded in the "Records of the Grand Historian: The Annals of Yin." This situation indicates that the ruler indulges in excess and the people are disorderly, and the virtuous are abandoned. The diviner should distance himself from this corrupt situation and preserve his purity and integrity.

咸　三狸搏鼠，遮遏前後。當此之時，不能脫走。

The hexagram indicates a situation of being surrounded. Three cats working together catch a mouse, with the mouse blocked on all sides—front, back, left, and right. At this point, escape is impossible. The owner of the forest is surrounded, with no way out. If the person seeking divination is in a weak position, it will be difficult to escape, and it is advisable to seek peace and pay tribute early. If the person is in a strong position, the success of the encirclement is expected.

恆　陶叔孔圉，不處亂國。初雖未萌，後受福慶。

The hexagram of节 (caution) and the hexagram of恒 (continuity). Tao Shu and Kong Yu, who were virtuous men, would not stay in a country plagued by turmoil. Although at first there were no obvious signs, in the end they would receive blessings and rejoice. Confucius said, "Do not enter a country in danger, nor dwell in a country in disorder," as recorded in the Analects, Chapter Tai Bo. This person should choose a suitable place to live, avoid turmoil for security. The fortune-teller should advise leaving the place of contention early, and future blessings will naturally come.

遯　奮翅鼓翼，翱翔外國。逍遙北域，不入溫室。

The section describes a departure. With wings spread wide, it rises up, soaring away to distant lands; it roams freely in the northern regions, unwilling to return to the warm comfort of its dwelling. This indicates a situation where the subject is eager to leave, to seek freedom rather than return to comfort. Those who are contemplating a distant journey or seeking to escape from their current circumstances should now take action. This is an auspicious time for those wishing to break free from their present situation.

大壯　德音孔博，升在王室。八極蒙佑，受其福祿。

The hexagram of Great Strength follows the hexagram of节 (Restraint). A noble reputation is extensive and reaches the royal court; all the eight directions receive protection and benefit from this blessing and honor. This forest is highly auspicious, indicating that fame will rise, and grace will extend far. Those who consult this oracle are of great virtue and reputation, and may expect to be favored by the court or superiors, with blessings and honors following.

晉　當變立權，擿解患難。渙然冰釋，大國以安。（升之震）

When facing a crisis, one can adapt flexibly, remove and resolve difficulties; problems are like ice melting in warm water, dissipating naturally. Thus, the great country becomes stable. This oracle indicates the ability to respond appropriately and turn danger into safety. When encountering difficulties, the diviner should not be rigidly bound by old rules, but should skillfully use flexibility to resolve doubts and restore stability.

明夷　羽動角甘，雨續草木，茂年歲熟。

The section speaks of the bright darkness. The feather tone vibrates, the horn tone is harmonious, and the five tones are in tune, thus yin and yang follow each other in harmony. Continuous rain nourishes the grass and trees, which flourish and result in a bountiful harvest. This indicates that the forest master has a harmonious climate and all things receive proper nourishment. Those who engage in their endeavors are in a period of growth, even though they may be in a state of obscurity, they will actually achieve a rich harvest. It is suitable to work diligently and cultivate further.

家人　天所佑助，福來禍去，君王何憂。

The hexagram "Family" indicates that there is heavenly protection and assistance, with blessings coming and misfortunes receding. The king has nothing to worry about. This is a great auspicious omen, indicating receiving the favor of heaven and turning misfortune into blessing. The concerns of the person consulting the oracle will naturally resolve themselves, the family will be in peace and security, and all matters of concern can be set aside. One may proceed with confidence and ease.

睽　方啄廣口，聖智仁厚。釋解倒懸，唐國大安。（小畜之噬嗑）

The hexagram is Kui (Strife). The person described has a broad mouth and a remarkable appearance, possessing wise intelligence and a kind heart. He alleviates the people's plight, as if lifting them from a position of upside-down hardship, bringing great stability to the country of Yao. The Book of Mencius mentions "rescuing the people from their inverted suffering." This person is capable of helping the distressed and resolving critical situations, and the fortune-teller may expect to meet a wise and enlightened person who will relieve their difficulties.

蹇　葛藟蒙棘，華不得實。讒□亂政，使恩壅塞。（泰之蒙，蠱之明夷，師之中孚）

The divination indicates a situation of obstruction. Vines entwine and cover thorns, blooming but failing to bear fruit; deceitful individuals disrupt affairs, blocking the flow of grace and favor. This forest is dominated by petty people, with blossoms but no fruit. The endeavors of the diviner are consumed by obstacles and entanglements. It is advisable to first clear away the entanglements and slander around them, otherwise there will be no real gain.

解　皇母多恩，字養孝孫。脫於襁褓，成就為君。

The interpretation of "Jie" (Breaking). The grandmother shows deep affection and nurtures a filial grandson. The child grows up from infancy to adulthood and eventually becomes a king of a country. This person is supported by elders and ultimately achieves great success. The one who draws this divination is currently weak and without support, but if someone supports them, they will surely achieve success in the future. This is especially favorable for child-rearing and adopting heirs.

損　積水下溼，北陸苦寒。露宿多風，君子傷心。

The hexagram indicates a situation of loss. Accumulated water has soaked the low areas, making them damp and uncomfortable. The northern region is bitterly cold and hard to endure. Staying outdoors exposes one to strong winds, causing the gentleman to feel sorrowful. This suggests that the person in question is in a harsh environment with no place to take shelter. The one seeking divination is also in a difficult situation without support. It is advisable to first find a secure place to stay, and not to endure the cold, dampness, wind, and exposure for too long, as this may harm the body.

益　伯夷叔齊，貞廉之師。以德防患，憂禍不存。（革之否，歸妹之臨，中孚之解）

The divination indicates a beneficial increase. Boyi and Boyi's younger brother Shuqi were exemplary in their integrity and purity, renouncing the throne and refusing to eat grain from the Zhou dynasty, as recorded in the "Records of the Grand Historian: Biography of Boyi." They were able to prevent calamities through virtue and moral conduct, thus avoiding worries and misfortunes. This person maintains personal integrity and moral virtue, thereby keeping away from disaster. The diviner should cultivate a clear mind and restrain desires, not compete for fame and profit. In this way, calamities will not come, which is a favorable omen for self-cultivation and avoiding misfortune.

夬　一雌二雄，子不得公。亂我族類，使吾心憒。

The divination indicates a situation of division and confusion. A female bird is paired with two male birds, and the offspring cannot determine their parentage. This causes disturbance within the clan, leading to inner turmoil. The family's lineage is unclear, resulting in disorder. The diviner should promptly establish proper distinctions and clear affiliations; delaying or being vague will only lead to further chaos.

姤　主安多福，天祿所伏。居之寵昌，君子有光。

The hexagram is姤. The sovereign is secure and prosperous, with abundant blessings; the heavenly bestowed official position is hidden within it. Occupying this position brings flourishing favor, allowing the gentleman to shine with honor. This is a great auspicious forest, indicating a secure and prosperous position, radiant and illustrious. The one who divines finds their position perfectly suitable; they should remain content and steadfast, for honor and official favor will naturally arrive, without needing to seek elsewhere.

萃　千載槐根，身多斧瘢。樹維枯屈，枝葉不出。

The gathering of a festival. A thousand-year-old locust tree has its roots severely damaged, and its trunk is covered with scars from axes; the whole tree is withered and twisted, unable to sprout any branches or leaves. The main tree of this grove has suffered too much damage, its vitality completely cut off; even though it is old, it cannot regrow. The old business on which the fortune-teller relies has already decayed, and gathering together is of no benefit. It is better to plant new roots, and there is no need to make efforts on the withered wood.

升　周師伐紂，勝殷牧野。甲子平旦，天下大喜。（謙之噬嗑，渙之夬、履）

The rising of the section. When King Wu of Zhou's army attacked King Zhou of Shang, they defeated the Shang army at Mu Ye. On the day of Jiazi, when the sky was just beginning to brighten, the outcome was already decided, and all people were greatly rejoiced. This is recorded in the Book of Documents, the "Mu Xi" section. This omen, Lin Da Ji, indicates a decisive victory, the removal of the old and the establishment of the new. Those who cast the divination may expect their affairs to be completed quickly, with widespread support. It is advisable to act decisively and not hesitate, for hesitation would lead to losing the opportunity.

困　日走月步，趍不同舍。夫妻反目，主君失位。（豐之同人，小畜之同人，豫之睽）

The sun moves swiftly while the moon moves slowly, each heading towards different star houses; just as a husband and wife turn their backs to each other, or a ruler loses his position. This situation represents a unity that is divided, with internal and external conflicts. The relationship of the person seeking divination is now on the verge of separation, with both family and official matters unstable. It is advisable to resolve the issue promptly and avoid further widening the rift.

井　宣勞就力，為王主國。安土成稷，天下蒙福。

The virtue of the section is like a well. Announcing policies and working diligently, he manages state affairs on behalf of the king; he ensures peace and stability of the land, and the abundance of five grains, benefiting all under heaven. This forest is greatly auspicious; the person in charge is capable and effective, benefiting everyone. If the person taking the divination assumes a major responsibility, he will surely be competent, and his policies will benefit the country and the people, achieving both fame and tangible benefits.

革　諷德誦功，美周盛隆。奭旦輔成，光濟沖人。（明夷之蒙，益之升）

The divination indicates a change in the way of conduct. It praises virtue and recounts achievements, extolling the flourishing era of the Zhou dynasty. Zhao Gongshi and Zhou Gongdan assisted Cheng Wang, greatly promoting and completing his rule as a young monarch. "Chong Ren" refers to a young ruler, as mentioned in the Book of Documents, the Da Gao. This omen signifies that a virtuous minister supports a young ruler, enabling the revival of the state and the country. Those who interpret the omen may expect to be able to assist effectively, and the weak or young will have support to achieve success.

鼎　三夜不寢，憂來益甚。戒以危懼，棄其安居。

The divination indicates a situation of transition and upheaval. For three consecutive nights, one is unable to sleep, and worry grows heavier. Due to a sense of danger, one is forced to abandon a secure dwelling. This suggests that the person is experiencing anxiety and fear, compelled to leave their current place. The diviner is currently troubled and restless, and there is a reason for this. One must face the potential dangers and move to a safer place sooner rather than trying to force sleep.

震　思願所之，乃今逢時。洗濯故憂，並其所來。（睽之艮）

The trigram Zhen (Thunder) indicates that what is in one's heart, the place one wishes to go, is now the right time to act. Old worries should be washed away, and new blessings should be received together. The forest owner's long-cherished wishes are now fulfilled, old troubles are completely dispelled, and the matter that has long troubled the diviner is now reaching a conclusion. It is appropriate to take advantage of this opportunity, with previous worries dispelled and future joy following, both meeting one's heart's desire.

艮　噂噂懾懾，夜行晝伏。謀議我資，來攻吾室。空盡己財，幾無所食。

The trigram is Gen. A group of people are whispering together, acting secretly, moving out at night and hiding during the day. They are scheming to take my wealth and attack my house, looting my property and almost taking away all my food. This is a great misfortune concerning wealth, indicating theft and robbery. Those who cast this divination should be very cautious about security, keep their money hidden, and be especially vigilant at night.

漸　騂牛亡子，鳴於大野。申後陰徵，還歸其母。說我除悔。

The gradual return of a broken bond. A red cow lost her calf, which was crying in the open field; just as the queen mother was secretly summoned and eventually returned to her family. The mother and child were reunited, bringing me joy and dispelling my regrets. This forest owner lost something but has regained it, and has returned to where he belonged. The person or thing lost by the diviner may be recovered, and long-held worries may be resolved.

歸妹　王良善御，伯樂知馬。周旋步驟，行中規矩。止息有節，延命壽考。（遯之豫）

The hexagram "Jie" (Breaking Up) relates to "Gui Mei" (Disordered Union). Wang Liang was skilled in driving, and Bo Le was skilled in appraising horses; the carriage and horses moved in harmony, advancing and retreating in order, stopping and moving according to proper rules, resting with discipline, thus achieving longevity. These two examples are mentioned in the "Mengzi" and "Zhan Guo Ce". This refers to Lin Dagji, indicating that one's actions follow established rules, and movements and stillness are appropriate. Those who follow proper conduct will enjoy peace and longevity, especially benefiting health preservation and family management.

豐　釋然遠咎，避患革害。田獲三狐，以貝為寶。

The hexagram indicates abundance. The mind becomes tranquil and free from mistakes, avoiding calamities and eliminating harm. In a hunting scene, three foxes are captured. The Zhou Changes (I Ching), hexagram 46, line nine two says, "In hunting, three foxes are caught, obtaining a yellow arrow." Also, shells are considered valuable. This person removes harm and gains benefits, transforming worry into joy. The matter concerning the diviner can be resolved, and unexpected wealth is obtained.

旅　仁獸所處，國無凶咎。市賈十倍，復歸惠裡。

A fortunate journey. Where the benevolent beast Qilin resides, there are no dangers or mistakes in the country; the market transactions bring tenfold profits, and one returns home with a full load to the virtuous village. This forest is very auspicious, indicating the arrival of auspicious signs and great success in business. Those who divinate will find that going out to trade will surely gain substantial profits and return home safely, making it an excellent omen for seeking wealth on a journey.

巽　六目俱視，各欲有志。一言不同，乖戾生訟。

The hexagram is Wind. Six eyes all look around, each person has their own opinion; a single sentence cannot be understood in the same way, leading to disputes and lawsuits. The owner of this forest has many mouths and varied opinions, causing conflicts. Those who share a task should first reach a consensus; otherwise, a single disagreement may lead to legal trouble.

兌　傅說休明，驂御四龍。周徑萬里，無有危凶。

The trigram兑 represents joy. The merchant official Fu Yue was praised in the "Zhuangzi · Da Zongshi" for his virtue and achievements, which were beautiful and clear. After his death, he was said to ride the Eastern Star and travel with the constellation Jiwei, becoming part of the celestial stars. Now he is driving four dragons, traveling a distance of ten thousand miles without encountering any danger or misfortune. This is a favorable omen for a great journey, indicating that the person's travels will be long and safe. Those who consult this divination will find their journeys and changes of position smooth and successful, with a bright and unobstructed future.

渙　伯仲叔季，日暮寢寐。醉醒失明，喪其貝囊。臥拜道旁。（謙之蠱）

The festival is scattered. Four brothers, at dusk, fell asleep immediately, woke up drunk and confused, lost their money bag, and lay down by the roadside to beg for help. This person indulges in alcohol and loses money, losing face. The one interpreting the divination should avoid excessive drinking, as after drinking, it is easy to lose things and behave improperly. One should drink moderately to protect wealth and safety.

中孚　江有寶珠，海多大魚。亟行疾至，可以得財。（渙之需）

In the section of Zhongfu, there is a treasure pearl in the river and many big fish in the sea; one should hurry to leave and arrive quickly in order to obtain wealth. This indicates that the wealth is located far away, but its value lies in timeliness. The person consulting the oracle should not hesitate or delay, but decisively go out to seek opportunities, thus gaining abundant rewards. If one is slow, others will get there first.

小過　遠視千里，不見所視。離婁之明，無益於耳。

The divination indicates a minor excess. Looking far into the distance, one cannot see what is truly important; even with the keen eyesight of Li Lu, who could discern the finest details, it would be of no help to the ears. This suggests that the person in question is using their strengths in the wrong place. The abilities relied upon by the diviner do not align with the current situation. It is advisable to change methods and not force one's strengths against another's weaknesses.

既濟　弱足刖跟，不利出門。市賈無贏，折亡為患。（乾之鼎）

The hexagram indicates completion and rest. The feet are weak, and the heels are injured, making it unfavorable to travel far. Engaging in business will result in no profit, but rather loss and misfortune. The person in question suffers from impaired movement and financial loss. This hexagram indicates that the person in question is acting as a bride, and the right time for marriage has been missed. The person who was relied upon by the seeker ends up benefiting, while the seeker remains alone and without a partner. It is advisable for the seeker to seek their own path and not wait for others to arrange their fate.
