This pattern applies to four days: Wu Shen, Ding You, Bing Zi, and Geng Zi. For example, on Wu Shen day with Yi Mao hour, the Wu earth takes the Yi wood in Mao as its official star, and the Yi wood in the hour takes the Geng metal in Shen as its official star. The day and hour exchange their positions and each receives a noble position, so it is called "mutual exchange of noble positions." In the four pillars, it is favorable to have Ren or Gui as wealth to nourish the Yi wood official star. When the fortune moves to a place where the official star is strong, it indicates a noble destiny. It is unfavorable to see Ji wood as seven evils or Xin metal as a damaging official. It is also unfavorable to have Yin and You in conflict. For Ding You day with Ren Yin hour, Bing Zi day with Gui Si hour, and Geng Zi day with Ding Hai hour, the favorable and unfavorable factors are the same as above. For example, in the case of Gui Hai, Ren Xu, Bing Zi, and Gui Si, the day and hour have mutual exchange of noble positions, each occupying an official or noble position, and there are no conflicts, clashes, or damages, so the person is prominent. Another example is Ji Wei, Xin Wei, Bing Zi, and Gui Si, which also fits this pattern and indicates great fortune. According to ancient methods, the mutual exchange of noble positions, such as Wu Wu day with Ding Si hour, refers to the official position of the day and the official position of the hour.
Zi and Wu are both included.
The position of Zi represents the Imperial Seat, and the position of Wu represents the Gate of the Palace, both being places where emperors reside. If a person's destiny includes two Zis paired with two Wus, or two Wus enclosing a Zi, or two Zis enclosing a Wu, then the principle of Water and Fire in Harmony (Ji Ji) is present, which contains the potential for the first emergence of Yang and the first emergence of Yin. Those who possess such configurations are destined for high status. For example, the combinations of Ren Wu, Ren Zi, Wu Wu, and Ren Zi represent two Zis and two Wus; the combinations of Ren Zi, Gui Chou, Wu Wu, and Ren Zi; Ji Zi, Geng Wu, Bing Shen, and Wu Zi; and Wu Wu, Ji Zi, Ji Shen, Geng Wu; Ji Wu, Ren Shen, Ji Zi, Geng Wu, all represent cases where two Zis enclose a Wu. These combinations are all considered to be of noble destiny.
Azure Dragon Conceals Its Form
Heavenly Stems Jia and Yi belong to wood, which is associated with the East, and the East is known as the Azure Dragon. The phrase "Azure Dragon hidden form" refers to wood being concealed beneath metal. For example, those born on the days of Jia Xu, Jia Shen, Yi Si, Yi You, and Yi Chou have their day branches hiding wealth and official positions. These must be supported by the month's stem and branch, with the official star having a proper position and not being harmed by the harmful star. The power of metal and wood must be balanced to form a harmonious pattern. Some people refer to the day Yi Si and the hour Yi Si as "Azure Dragon hidden," which indicates misfortune caused by drinking alcohol, leading to hidden loss of fortune and lifespan. If one refrains from drinking, this harm can be avoided. The poem states that if Jia and Yi wood are seated in the metal territories of Shen and You, the wood will be in its flourishing season in spring, which is most favorable. If the four pillars also have a repository to support this, the wealth and official positions will be exceptionally good.
White Tiger holds power
Heavenly Stems Geng and Xin belong to metal and are associated with the west, where the White Tiger resides. The phrase "White Tiger holds power" means that metal has its own strength. For example, those born on the days Gengwu, Gengyin, Gengxu, Xinsi, Xinmao, and Xinwei have their day branches occupied by wealth, official positions, seals, and noble spirits. The day's main stem needs support to receive life qi, or if the official star is strong and supported, then choosing the official star as the main use will lead to high status, and choosing wealth as the main use will lead to wealth. The same applies to the big years and the great cycles. Some people also say that those born on the day or hour Xinmao are affected by the White Tiger, which is not favorable for bold fighting and may cause eye diseases. Those who repeat this are especially to be avoided. A poem says: When the White Tiger is in charge and the寅卯 (Yin and Mao) wealth is strong, if it also appears in the areas of Si, Wu, Wei, and Xu, encountering this pattern in all four directions often indicates wealth and honor, and the person will certainly become a pillar in the capital city.
The Vermilion Bird rides the wind.
Heavenly Stems Jia and Yi belong to the South, and the South is associated with the Vermilion Bird. The phrase "the Vermilion Bird riding the wind" signifies being in a favorable position. Jia and Yi thrive when seated in the land of metal and water. As long as the day ruler is strong and has support, it indicates wealth and honor. For example, on days Bingzi and Dinghai, water and fire complement each other, fulfilling the noble pattern of being born in the right condition. Having strong official and wealth positions is considered superior. If Jia and Yi encounter Shen, Zi, and Chen forming a water trinity, it also represents the situation of water and fire in harmony. The text states that fire being strong and accompanied by water achieves the success of the Ji Ji hexagram. However, it is essential that water and fire are balanced, without excessive dominance of either. On days Bingshen, Bingchen, Dingyou, and Dingchou, the day ruler has support and receives life energy, with strong wealth and official positions, all of which are auspicious. Some refer to Dingwei day and Dingwei hour as "the Vermilion Bird with a broken foot," which is highly unfavorable for livestock, leading to loss, death, or illness. If there is wood from Jia or Yi in the chart, there may still be descendants. The poem says: "The Vermilion Bird riding the wind refers to Jia and Yi. If they meet metal and water, they will stand out. Sitting in the land of Shen, Zi, and Chen brings great prestige, and when they are in their prime, they often walk on the jade steps."
The Black Tortoise is in charge.
The heavenly stems Jia and Yi belong to the northern direction, which is associated with the Black Tortoise. When it is said that "the Black Tortoise holds power," it means that the element is in a strong position. For example, on days with the stems Renyin, Renwu, Renxu, Renchen, Guisi, Guichou, and Guiwei, the day branch is occupied by wealth, officialdom, and the seal. If the day's stem is strong and has support, and the official star is in harmony with the month's vital energy, then the person is destined for high status. This pattern is most dangerous when the water trinity is formed, leading to the official star being harmed, and multiple such combinations result in misfortune, even leading to death by unjust means. If instead, the earth trinity is formed and there is a strong fire element, it is favorable to see metal to release the earth's energy and support the day's stem, resulting in good fortune. If the day's stem is weak and the structure is broken, then it is ominous. The same principles apply to the big years and the major cycles. Some people refer to days and times with the stem Renchen as "the Black Tortoise being pierced," indicating that officials may be slandered by courtiers and suffer losses from petty people, experiencing constant disputes and unrest. A poem states: the Black Tortoise is born in autumn and thrives in the northern direction; if it is in the area of the earth element, and there is also the wood element of the northeast, then wealth and happiness are abundant, and both fame and fortune will flourish. Another poem says: for the Black Tortoise to hold power, it must be genuine, with the day's stem being on top of the wealth element. If the official star is also in a favorable position, and there is no damage, then the person is of great importance.
Gou Chen occupies the position of authority.
The earthy stems 戊 and 己 belong to the central earth, and the central position is represented by Gou Chen. The phrase "Gou Chen in its proper position" means being in authority. For example, on days with the day branch Wuyin, Wuchen, Wuzi, Wushen, Jimao, Jihai, and Jiwei, the branches beneath the day stem are associated with wealth, official positions, and seals. As long as the day stem is strong, those with official stars in season will achieve high status, and those with wealth stars in season will be wealthy. It is best if there are no harmful stars or competing wealth stars. Avoid conflicts and punishments, and if the malevolent stars are too strong, disasters may occur. The same principles apply to the big years and major cycles. A poem says: When 戊 and 己 are in a prosperous place, the official stars in the寅 and 卯 branches are considered the strongest. If they also appear in 辰, 卯, and 未, and meet the wealth branches 亥 and 子, it is very auspicious and prosperous. Another poem says: When the day stem 戊 or 己 is on top of the wealth and official stars, it is called Gou Chen in its proper position. This indicates great wealth and the ability to receive auspicious energies, and those who encounter this pattern in their fate can attain high official positions.
Returning to life by borrowing energy
"The concept of 'returning the soul and borrowing the qi' refers to a situation where the Five Phases have already reached a dead end, but another saving deity intervenes to continue the cycle, allowing life to be restored and the qi to return. For example, wood reaches its end in the hour of Shen, but if there is a column of Jiashen, although the metal is strong in Shen, the heavenly stem reveals the wood, allowing the wood's qi to be maintained. Similarly, metal reaches its end in the hour of Yin, but if there is a column of Wuyin, although the wood is strong in Yin, the heavenly stem reveals the earth, allowing the metal to be nourished. These are all cases of this type. Such combinations are most auspicious; if there is another benevolent deity assisting, it is of the next level; and if there is nothing at all, it is the lowest level."
Eight Special Officials, their Favorable and Prosperous Positions
The eight specialized days have already been listed earlier. Some say that other days such as Bingwu, Dingsi, Wuchen, Wuwu, Jisi, Yichou, and Renzi should also be included, but they exclude Dingwei. Among the sixty jiazi, only these stems and branches belong to the same Five Phases. Among them, the four days Jiayin, Yimao, Gengshen, and Xinyou have their day branches exactly matching the strong and prosperous places of their day stems, making them the most pure. Jia and Yi are suitable when born in Hai-Mao-Wei or the寅month, forming a wood trinity. Gengshen is suitable when born in Si-You-Chou or the申month, forming a metal trinity. This results in a refined and pure quality, indicating intelligence and longevity, with few illnesses, and a tendency towards liking wine and women. If the four pillars contain officials or evils, as long as the body is strong, there is no fear. However, if officials and evils are mixed, the禄气 cannot be exclusive, leading to eventual misfortune. If the four pillars have wealth, officialdom, or food, it brings fortune. If the person travels to a place where the wealth, officialdom, or food are strong, they can achieve wealth and honor. The only fear is when the same kind of stems and branches come to compete. If the four pillars lack wealth, food, officials, or officialdom, it often indicates loneliness or a tendency to become a monk or Taoist. The classics say, "When the heavenly stem and earthly branch are the same, it damages wealth and harms the wife," and also say, "If the body is strong but has no support, one will definitely become a monk or Taoist," referring to this situation.
If a person's destiny contains only one special fortune, and during their life journey they reach a place where the day stem is strong, and the wealth, food, and official star are also strong, they will also achieve great status. If there are three or four special fortunes overlapping without wealth or official positions, then one should take the wealth and fortune hidden in the opposite palace that is being stirred to serve as the useful god; or if the month or hour carries a powerful official star, and the day stem is strong and meets the official star, this is even more of a noble destiny. This pattern should avoid being stirred or harmed, as it will scatter the strong energy. Even if one becomes prominent, they may suffer from many illnesses. For example, Zhu Wen Gong's birth date is Geng Xu, Bing Xu, Jiayin, Geng Wu. Jiayin is a special fortune, and the combination of Yin, Wu, and Xu forms a fire trinity as the food star. The two Geng metals are seven evils, but they are located in a strong fire environment and are restrained, while the wood's refined energy is also well established, thus transforming the evils into power, making him a great Confucian scholar of his time. Dong Chengxiang's birth date is Ji Si, Xin Wei, Yimao, Ding Hai. Yimao is a special fortune, and the combination of Hai, Mao, and Wei forms a wood trinity. The day stem gathers all the refined energy of the birth旺, and during the journey of life, it moves towards the eastern direction where the day stem is strong, thus stirring the opposite You palace's fortune and transforming it into power, leading to great status.
Qu Zhi (Wood and Straightness)
For a day master of Jia or Yi wood, if the earthly branches form the wood triad of Hai-Mao-Wei, the four pillars must contain the character Hai to carry the essence of the official (印绶), in order to qualify for the "curved and straight" pattern. If there is no Hai but only Mao, it is merely the root of wood, and instead, seeing metal or earth would indicate a noble destiny. If there is neither Hai nor metal or earth, the wood will not be refined or substantial, and thus cannot be considered noble. For example, a Jia-Yin day master may have Hai, but if the time pillar shows Ding-Mao, then Mao is both a劫财 and the Yang Blade, while Ding is a damaging official. Even if such a person becomes prominent, it is not entirely qualified. A poem says: For a person born on a Jia or Yi day, if the earthly branches contain Hai-Mao-Wei, forming a complete wood pattern known as "curved and straight," then they will achieve honor and prosperity; if the four pillars lack Hai, then seeing earth or metal is favorable, indicating a life of comfort and fortune. Another poem says: For a person born on a Jia or Yi day, if the earthly branches contain Yin-Mao-Chen, representing the eastern direction, it is called "benevolence and longevity," both of which are commendable; however, if the four pillars contain complete Hai-Mao-Wei, it is most unfavorable to encounter western metal, which represents the cutting force. If instead, the person is in the northern direction of Kan water, they will certainly achieve honor and success.
Fire is ascending.
For a day master of Bing or Ding fire, if the earthly branches form the fire triad of Yin, Wu, and Xu, then the four pillars must contain the character Yin to carry the official energy, thus forming the "Inflaming Upward" pattern. Without Yin, it is merely a fate among the nine streams, close to the nobleman but not truly distinguished. If the fire is strong but there is no Hai water to harmonize it, it does not indicate a noble fate. This pattern favors the Eastern and Northern directions, and it is unfavorable to see Chen, Chou, or Wu Ji soil, as soil obscures the brightness of fire, often leading to eye diseases or wind ailments. If there is wood in the four pillars to loosen the soil and control it, then it becomes a noble pattern. It is also unfavorable to travel through water or metal regions, and it fears being in conflict. The poem says: When Bing or Ding day master sits on Yin, Wu, and Xu, the "Inflaming Upward" pattern arises from here; without Yin or without Hai, it cannot achieve fame, and encountering soil that dulls fire often leads to disability.
From Reform
A day born with the heavenly stem Xinh (辛) and with the earthly branches forming the metal triad of Si-You-Chou, also needs to have one or two stems of Bing or Ding or Si-Wu fire in order to transform the metal into useful objects. However, fire should not be excessive. For example, days born on Xinsi, Xinyou, or Xinchou do not like to be born in the fifth lunar month, when fire is too strong and may damage the metal. Instead, they are better born in the eighth lunar month, or with water and earth to nourish them, with the food god and official star to support them, which is considered auspicious. A poem says: White Tiger metal, when it meets Si-You-Chou, forms the 'from revolution' pattern, and the person's status and reputation are particularly heavy. A little bit of Bing or Ding or Si-Wu fire is enough; once the nobleman's dignity is refined, the official career will be long-lasting. Another poem says: Metal in the 'from revolution' pattern is respected by the nobleman and has deep fortune. If fire appears in the four pillars and mixes or harms the metal, then the person can only discuss classics in empty places and skills.
Moistening and descending
When the day master is water (Ren or Gui) and the earthly branches contain Shen, Zi, and Chen, it is called "Runxia" (flowing down). This pattern should avoid the hour of卯 or巳, which are the dead or extinct places for water, and also avoid the Three Punishments and Four Conflicts. Water that reaches its dead or extinct place cannot flow, and if it meets conflict or punishment, it will overflow and flood. The same principle applies to the ten-thousand-year cycle and the great destiny cycle. Some people say that if the water is too strong, there should be one or two earth elements in the four pillars to control it, thus building a dam. However, if there is earth, there is a fear that wood will form a group to overcome the earth, which is considered凶 (unfavorable). If the wood actually harms the earth, then metal should be present to save it, and thus the person's life will have many ups and downs. The favorable direction is the west, and it is not suitable for the southeast. A poem says: When the day master is Ren or Gui and the earthly branches contain Shen, Zi, and Chen, the pattern is called "Runxia," which is most accurate. It also needs the wealth of巳 or午 and the earth of辰 or戌. When Shen is in charge, the status is as high as the noble. Another poem says: The day master of Ren or Gui is favored in winter, and if it meets Shen and Chen, it forms a water pattern. Or if the earthly branches are all in the northern direction of Hai, Zi, and Chou, it can easily lead to success and fame.
Sowing and reaping
The text says: When the Earthly Branches Wuchen (戊辰) and Ji (己) meet the months of the four seasons (Chen, Wei, Chou, Xu), they are called "Jia Se" (Jia and Se, meaning cultivation of crops). This means that when Wuchen is born in the months of the four seasons, it is favorable to see wood as the official star, but only one wood is best. Too much wood would weaken the earth, leading to people who are deceitful and untrustworthy, and such people are considered destructive and unkind. Chen and Wei are places where earth energy gathers, and seeing fire (Si and Wu) in these months indicates wealth. However, too much fire would dry out the earth, making it unable to nurture all things. Chou and Xu contain hidden metal energy, so they should not appear again, as they may retain harmful energy and prevent the growth of all things. Also, seeing more metal would drain the earth's energy, which would not be beneficial. Earth in autumn is called dead earth because it contains metal; earth in winter is called mud earth because it contains water. Therefore, "Jia Se" is only suitable for the four seasons. The poem says: Those born on Wuchen or Ji days are best born in the months of the four seasons, and should be cautious of Chou and Xu earths which may damage the metal energy. If one is born with wood or encounters fire, the true signs of honor and wealth are revealed. Another poem says: When Wuchen is born in the four seasons, Wuchen and Chou or Wei are best to be complete. It is favorable to be in the wealth position and unfavorable to be in the official or harmful positions. When the destiny moves to the eastern wood region, it will certainly bring misfortune.
Earthly Branches of Earth are moist and descend.
The text says: When the earth element Wu Ji is in the water trinity of Shen, Zi, and Chen, it is like floating duckweed and broken reeds, drifting away from home. This refers to the days Wu Shen, Wu Zi, and Wu Chen, which are born in the prosperous water region of Shen, Zi, Chen, and Ren Gui. These people are poor and lowly, constantly moving about, and often suffer from diseases of the limbs and eyes, or may die from ulcers and blood infections. This situation only manifests during the years of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei. In addition, whenever the earth is weak and meets the water trinity, it is considered a drifting fate. However, if the earth is strong and prosperous, being in the water trinity can lead to wealth and honor, and when it reaches the fire region, it will flourish. For example, the combination of Wu Chen, Jia Zi, Wu Shen, and Yi Mao is a case where the earth is weak and meets the water trinity, leading to eye disease and exile. Another example is the combination of Xin Wei, Geng Zi, Wu Chen, and Ren Zi, where although the earth is subdued by the water, it is supported by earth to build a dike. When it reaches the years of Bing Shen and Ding You, it brings great wealth. Although it suffers from financial loss during the year Wu Wu in the year Yi Wei, it later attains the position of a high official. Therefore, it is not correct to consider all instances of Wu Ji and Ji in the water trinity as bad fortune.
Metal is white and water is clear.
The essay says: Those with the characteristics of white metal and clear water are suitable for success in the imperial examinations. This pattern refers to those born onGengshen orXinyou days in the autumn month, with their time of birth in the亥 or子 water regions. When considering metal, it is white in color; when considering water, it is clear in nature. If there is no punishment, clash, destruction or harm, they will be wealthy and prosperous. One must avoid being born in summer, as they do not fit this pattern. If born in spring, with metal born in February or March, and with a fortune moving towards the northwest, it is still acceptable. For example, those born onGengchen, Gengzi, Guisi, Guiyou, or Guichou days, if born in autumn or winter, without fire to harm metal or earth to control water, and with metal and water in balance, they also fit the pattern of white metal and clear water. The poem says: Those with white metal and clear water will achieve honor and prestige, with elegant writings that stand out. If there is no fire or earth to punish or restrain, their reputation will rise high, and they will become officials of the Hanlin Academy.
Wood and Fire Interact Strongly
The text says: Fire is bright and wood is flourishing, and if born in spring month, it brings honor and prominence. This refers to days such as Jia Xu, Jia Wu, Jia Yin, Bing Wu, Bing Yin, Bing Xu, etc., born in spring or summer months, with no metal or water in the four pillars to damage them, and with wood and fire present in the hour. Those who travel through the paths of wood and fire: if the day's stem is wood and fire is the refined essence, it is favorable to travel south; if the day's stem is fire and wood is the refined essence, it is favorable to travel east. Both indicate clarity, nobility, and great fortune. If the day's stem is fire and fire is the refined essence, traveling east also brings honor. For example, if someone is born on Bing Chen day in a month when fire is strong, traveling through the paths of wood and fire is acceptable, but it leads to wealth rather than high status. If there is only wood without fire, the pattern is not complete, because wood and fire together create a clear and bright image. For example, the birth charts of Ding Si, Jia Chen, Jia Yin, Ding Mao, Jia Wu, Bing Yin, Ding Mao, Bing Wu, Ding Si, Jia Chen, Yi Si, and Ding Hai all have wood and fire interacting, and they are considered to have clear and noble destinies.
Fire and Metal Cast Seal
The essay states: Metal cannot be shaped into objects without fire, and fire cannot display its usefulness without metal; when metal and fire are evenly matched, there is an appearance of casting seals. This pattern should avoid the character Chou, which represents damp earth and a metal storehouse, as it can damage the seal mold. The essay also says: Those who can ride in state carriages and wear crowns have an abundance of metal and fire in their destiny. It also says: Metal encountering fire ghosts without imbalance, all refer to this principle.
Fire and Earth mixed together
Fire becomes dim when it meets earth, but fire that resides in earth becomes even more obscure; therefore, fire should belong to fire and earth to earth, each keeping to its own without interfering. If fire and earth are mixed together, the person tends to be dull and confused. The classic text says, "Fire is weak and earth is dense, what use is there? It must be a person who toils in dust and has no achievement," which refers exactly to this. For example, the birth charts of Wu Shen, Ji Wei, Bing Wu, Yi Wei, Geng Xu, Yi Chou, Bing Chen, Wu Xu, Wu Xu, Ding Si, Ji Wei, and Bing Yin all have mixed fire and earth elements, and their lives are ordinary.
Mù Shà (Graveyard Maleficent)
An old song says: When theStorage is encountered with a ghost that overcomes me, this point should be known; when the煞 is caught between two forces and also keeps the grave, family members will scatter; if one is afflicted by this evil star without any rescue, one's fortune and lifespan will be lost in youth.所谓墓中逢鬼, for example, on a Jia day, encountering Geng Xu or Geng Chen; on a Yi day, encountering Xin Chou or Xin Wei; on a Bing day, encountering Ren Chen or Ren Xu; on a Ding day, encountering Gui Chou or Gui Wei; on a Wu day, encountering Jia Chen or Jia Xu; on a Ji day, encountering Yi Chou or Yi Wei; on a Geng day, encountering Bing Chen or Bing Xu; on a Xin day, encountering Ding Chou or Ding Wei; on a Ren day, encountering Wu Chen or Wu Xu; on a Gui day, encountering Ji Chou or Ji Wei, these are all called "Seven Evils Entering the Grave." The "Luo Lu Zi" says: When the evil force is caught between two forces and also keeps the grave, relatives and kin will weep at the funeral. For example, in the case of Ji Si, Wu Chen, Gui Chou, and Bing Chen, with癸 water as the day master, Wu earth is the official star and Ji earth is the seven evils. Wu and Ji are both in Chen, and Chen is the grave of癸 water. This often indicates early success but early death. Some also say that the evil force here is not only the seven evils; whenever the "Yang Ren," "Wang Shen," or "Jie Sha" are hidden between the day and hour or day and moon in theStorage, it is ominous.
Four positions are pure and complete.
Among the four branches of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai, there is the vital energy of the Five Phases, and they are also where the Post-horse and Xuetang are located, known as the Four Births. Among the four branches of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You, there is the flourishing energy of the Five Phases, with Bing, Xin, Ding, and Gui each occupying them, known as the Four Standards. The four branches of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are the mixed energies of the Five Phases, with Huagai and the official seal located upon them, known as the Four Tombs. The classic texts say that wealth, official position, and the official seal often reside in Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai. The True Treasure Treatise says that Zi, Wu, Mao, and You represent the image of the Eight Specials, and from a literary perspective, they can be the pillars of a state, while from a military perspective, they can achieve great military achievements. It also says that when Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai are all present, one can reach the rank of the Three High Officials. The Yuan Li Treatise says that those with Zi, Wu, Mao, and You all present are prone to indulgence in wine and women. The Qilima Treatise says that when the four repositories are complete, it is like a dragon transforming and entering the sea, capable of becoming the supreme ruler. The Baojian Treatise says that when Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are arranged in order, it is certainly the destiny of an emperor. The Liyu Ge says that when the four repositories are complete, it is the four dignitaries, ranking high and holding power.
The "Dubu" says: Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai form the four birth trigrams. If the useful elements are strong and the day's ruler is robust, encountering these can bring good fortune. Zi, Wu, Mao, and You form the four decline trigrams. If a man is afflicted by these, his fortune will be unstable; if a woman is afflicted, she will be lonely. Those who conform to this pattern often achieve great wealth and honor, but they inevitably suffer from injuries and troubles from their relatives, and their affairs are entangled and unclear. This is because the four branches each conflict with one another and there is no harmony among them. The "Jingji" says: If Zi, Wu, Mao, and You are in the correct pattern, it is called the four extremes being complete; if they are not in the pattern, it becomes scattered Taohua. If men or women are afflicted by these, although they may have wealth and status, they cannot avoid indulgence in pleasures and drunkenness, and they are people of shallow virtue. A poem says: The four characters Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai are connected, and the same applies to Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei; such people will not hold important positions or wield authority, but they will certainly serve as close attendants in the court. Another poem says: If the day's virtue, the day's dignity, and the魁罡 are present, and the four pillars are pure and complete, it will be very auspicious and prosperous; even among the six patterns, if they conform to the pattern, such fortune is not ordinary. This refers to the four day virtues, the four魁罡, and the four day dignities, with no other dry branches mixed in, and they are treated the same as the four pure patterns.
The generation of the primordial qi.
The concept of "Heavenly Origin as One Qi" refers to a situation where all four pillars of a birth chart are the same, such as four Renyin, four Xinmao, four Gengchen, four Jisi, four Wwu, four Dingwei, four Bingshen, four Yiyou, four Jiaxu, or four Guihai. Although all four pillars share the same heavenly stem and earthly branch, there are still differences in their weight, status, and fortune, which must be carefully examined. Four Renyin, four Xinmao, and four Jiaxu indicate great wealth and honor. Four Jisi is also esteemed. Four Wwu and four Dingwei, however, are marked by a strong Yang Blade, leading to a strong and fierce character; although they may attain high status, they often face misfortune, may harm their spouses, and may not end their lives well. Four Gengchen signifies honor but is associated with a tendency towards romanticism and a preference for reputation over wealth. Four Yiyou often result in physical disabilities. Four Guihai usually indicate poverty. Four Bingshen can achieve honor if born in the northern direction. If the year or the great destiny encounters conflicts, clashes, destruction, or competition, disaster is certain. The main principle is to examine whether there is wealth, officialdom, education, or sustenance within the earthly branches, whether these elements are injured after entering the correct pattern, whether the heavenly stems receive the qi of the month, and whether the wealth, officialdom, education, and sustenance carried by the heavenly and earthly stems can be transformed or followed, thus determining their weight, status, and fortune.
It is also said that when four heavenly stems are all the same and pure, without any mixture, it is called "Heavenly Stem One Qi," and it cannot be discussed in terms of same-element companions. One must carefully examine whether the earthly branches contain wealth, official positions, or seals, and whether there is any conflict or restriction. If it carries wealth, official positions, and seals and meets the criteria, and if the big years and the ten years of destiny do not contradict, it will certainly achieve great status. If there are conflicts, punishments, restrictions, or control, it is also considered凶, and one should not simply assume that all cases of one qi are destined for high status. For example, combinations like Jiazi, Jiaxu, Jiayin, and Jiazi are also called "Phoenix Stem Pattern." There was a person who reached the position of Zhenglang, whose birth chart was Renchen, Renzi, Renyin, and Renyin. The Ren water is self-destroyed in Yin, so the pattern becomes mixed and complicated, hence he only reached the position of Zhenglang. It is also said that when four earthly branches are all the same and pure, with the same elements, it is called "Chila Bingxiu Pattern." One should examine whether the heavenly stem's element is gathering good fortune or bad fortune in the earthly branches. If it gathers good fortune and meets the criteria, it is likely to achieve high status in the two government offices. For example, combinations like Jiayin, Bingyin, Gengyin, and Wuyin are also called "Phoenix Branch Pattern."
The poem says: The heavenly stem is one pure character, destined for honor and prestige, with the heavenly stem not mixed and one character clear and pure; it should not be considered as a rival stem competing, but rather one born into wealth and honor, capable of reaching high official positions. Another poem says: If the heavenly stem is based on water, and it is born in autumn or winter, it is wonderful beyond measure; if another great auspicious god, such as the earthy branch Chou, is present, then the person will certainly rise quickly in official career in youth. Another poem says: If the heavenly stem is based on earth, and it is born in the month of the four seasons, it is especially remarkable; if the branches Shen and You are included in the chart, then the person will be exceptionally intelligent and outstanding. Another poem says: If the heavenly stem is based on wood, and it receives Shen and Hai, it will reveal the source of fortune; if the official stars in the four pillars are in a favorable position, then achievements and honors can be attained first. Another poem says: If the heavenly stem is metal, and both the time and day pillars meet the Qiu Ganga (a term for a powerful and auspicious combination), then the fortune is deep; if the Yangren (a term for a sharp and powerful element) is in conflict and also carries noble dignity, then the person will always be respected by noble people. Another poem says: If the heavenly stem has a fiery character, and the branches Chou and Yin are in the time and day positions, then by initiating the transmission of wealth and official positions, the person will live a life of wealth and prosperity. Upon private examination of these two patterns: those with the same heavenly stem mostly indicate high status, while those with the same earthly branch occasionally do not indicate high status; this is the difference between light and pure energy versus heavy and turbid energy.
Another verse says: Four yang Ren are paired with four Yin, the fire of Li and the water of Kan contend and support each other, thus generating prosperity naturally; when the fortune moves to the fire land, it brings more honor and prestige, but one must avoid conflict with the month's main element. Another verse says: If a person's destiny includes four Mao, and the heavenly stems are connected with four Xin, light body and thin fortune are minor issues, but one should fear that the lifespan is not strong. Another verse says: If four Bingshen are present in the destiny, the day master and the seven evils are evenly matched, thus showing the source of fortune; this is not the case of an ordinary person chasing fame and wealth, but he will be able to dominate the leading position through power. Another verse says: Four Jia are all sitting on Xu, the wealth and official positions in Xu are divided and taken away, thus bringing no benefit; if the fortune moves to the south, combined with this place of injury, there is some minor good fortune. Another verse says: Four Gui are standing in the dry palace at the亥 position, the wood and water generate each other, forming a reverse flow; although fame and fortune are abundant, one must have a strong body to bear it, but when the fortune moves to the south, the fate turns bad.
"Backward Fortune Follows the Horse"
The term "backing away from official rank" refers to the situation where the Jia wood is considered to have the official and rank represented by Xin metal. If Jia is born in spring or summer when the metal energy is exhausted, the official star is absent, and this is called "backing away from rank." The term "chasing the horse" refers to the situation where Jia wood is considered to have wealth and the horse represented by Ji earth. If Ji earth is robbed by Yi wood and the wood triad of Hai, Mao, and Wei, Jia will have no wealth to use, and this is called "chasing the horse." The other heavenly stems follow similar patterns. For example, in a chart with Renzi, Renzi, Dingwei, and Yisi, the Ding fire is supposed to take Ren water as its official and rank. However, Ren water's official and rank is in the Hai month, and since Ding is born in the Zi month, the water in Zi is癸 water, which is the seven harmful star for Ding. The rank of Ren water has already passed, so it is called "backing." Only those facing the direction of the rank have the rank, while those facing away from it do not. Ding also takes Geng metal as its wealth and horse, but Geng metal dies in the Zi month, which is why it is called "backing away from rank and chasing the horse." If such a destiny encounters harmful stars or the path of wealth robbery, it will not bring fortune, because the root has already been lost. The "Luo Lu Zi" says, "backing away from rank and chasing the horse, wandering in a desolate path in anxiety," which is somewhat different from what is discussed here, and can be compared with that essay.
The example of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches indicating a great Nobleman's birth year.
All those born in the year of Jia are paired with the month of Dingmao, the day of Yiwei, and the hour of Wuyin; those born in the year of Yi are paired with the month of Jimao, the day of Jiaxu, and the hour of Yihai; those born in the year of Bing are paired with the month of Gengyin, the day of Dingsi, and the hour of Bingwu; those born in the year of Ding are paired with the month of Bingwu, the day of Renchen, and the hour of Dingwei; those born in the year of Wu are paired with the month of Renxu, the day of Jichou, and the hour of Wuyin; those born in the year of Ji are paired with the month of Xinwei, the day of Jiwei, and the hour of Bingyin; those born in the year of Geng are paired with the month of Jiashen, the day of Gengshen, and the hour of Xinsi; those born in the year of Xin are paired with the month of Bingshen, the day of Gengwu, and the hour of Xinsi; those born in the year of Ren are paired with the month of Xinhai, the day of Renchen, and the hour of Dingwei; those born in the year of Gui are paired with the month of Bingchen, the day of Bingchen, and the hour of Wuzi. The above is arranged by year, and under each year stem, there is only one day and one hour, which indicates that the person is destined to be a great nobleman who achieves great accomplishments; if not, then they are of the caliber of immortals beyond the mundane world, which ordinary divination methods cannot calculate.
The nobleman is not surpassed by the emperor. However, when I examined the founding emperors of previous dynasties and the emperors of our Ming dynasty, none of them matched the chart mentioned above. I often think, with such a vast land and so many people, how could there not be someone born in those years, months, days, and hours? Yet not everyone born in those times is a great nobleman. In the end, those born with great nobility must be governed by some unseen fate, and the years, months, days, and hours are mostly unreliable. I have recorded many examples of people with the same birth dates among scholars and commoners, and the number is countless. Taking scholars as an example: Huang Maoguan, a minister, and Shen Jia, a deputy minister, had the same birth dates. Huang died in a military disaster, while Shen died peacefully at home, and Shen died before Huang. As for their official ranks, there is no need to discuss them. Zhu Heng and Li Tinglong had the same birth dates. Zhu passed the imperial examination in the year Renchen, while Li did so in the year Guichou. Zhu rose to the position of Minister, while Li only reached the rank of Grand Secretary, and his lifespan was also shorter. As for the number and quality of their descendants, there is no need to discuss them. Wan Ju, a scholar, and Rao Cai, a commoner, had the same birth dates. Wan Ju passed the imperial examination and became a high-ranking official, while Rao Cai only became a juren and reached the position of a prefect. However, Rao Cai had many descendants while Wan Ju had few, and Wan Ju died from exile and military service while Rao Cai did not. Therefore, the differences in lifespan and fortune are even more difficult to generalize.
The brothers Wang Qiezhai from Sanhe were born from the same mother, yet their achievements in official ranks differed. Moreover, considering the vastness of the world, the breadth of the nine provinces, and the multitude of people, there are countless individuals with the same eight characters in their birth dates. How can we treat them all the same? I remember a legend: a servant once had the same eight characters as Lu Gong. Whenever Lu Gong received great favor from the court, the servant was severely punished. When Lu Gong had a minor celebration, the servant was lightly reprimanded. Their fates were entirely opposite. There was also a family who had a son with the same eight characters as Lu Gong, but only sixty years younger. A fortune teller used Lu Gong's destiny to predict the boy's future, and the family was very happy, believing the child would surely achieve high status. From a young age, they allowed him to behave recklessly. Eventually, he became addicted to alcohol and indulgence, drowned after getting drunk, and died at the age of nineteen.
Another account from the "Record of Kindness" says: In the Imperial Academy, there were two scholars with the same birth dates and times, and they both passed the local examinations and were admitted to the provincial exams at the same time. They agreed to take up positions in nearby areas so that they could keep track of each other's fortunes and misfortunes. Later, one was appointed as a professor in Ezhou, and the other as a professor in Echeng. Soon after, the one in Ezhou died, and the one in Echeng took care of his funeral. He prayed, saying: "I was born on the same day, month, year, and hour as you, and we have had the same background and experiences. Yet you have left me first, so today even if I die, I have died seven days after you. If you have a spirit, you should appear to me in a dream to explain why." That night, he indeed dreamed of the other, who said: "I was born into a wealthy family and had already enjoyed my share of fortune, so I died. You were born into a humble family and have not yet exhausted your share of fortune, so you are still alive." Later, the one in Echeng rose to become the governor of an entire prefecture. Was it not because he was cautious and did not overindulge that he was able to achieve this?
There is also a candidate named Yan Shoufang from our county, whose birth chart is the same as that of a craftsman named Yuan Da-gang. The Yan family was originally poor but later became wealthy, while the Yuan family was rich but later fell into poverty. The Yan family had many sons, while the Yuan family had only two sons. Yan was still alive when Yuan died. Yan was diligent in his studies and observed propriety; although he had suffered from serious illness, he managed to preserve his health and eventually became a candidate for the imperial examination through the system of annual recommendations. Yuan, on the other hand, was the opposite. When we consider these people together, we can see that different families have different fates, and each person's occupation is also different. Whether one can preserve his health, cultivate himself carefully, and practice frugality to enjoy a long life depends entirely on our own efforts to seek blessings. If someone claims that his destiny is to be wealthy and long-lived, yet refuses to cultivate virtue and pursue learning, instead being arrogant and indulgent, and not following the laws and regulations, then what kind of destiny is that? How can destiny work in such a way?
Discussing the Proper Wealth (Zeng Cai)
The so-called "positive wealth" refers to situations where Jia wood meets Ji earth, or Yi wood meets Wu earth, and so on. Wealth is something that I control, and it represents my wife. Just as a person marries a wife who brings wealth, I must be healthy and strong in order to enjoy it. If I am weak and declining, even if the wife's wealth is abundant, I can only look at it and never be able to use it. Therefore, wealth should be timely and strong, not mixed with other types of wealth, and should not appear too frequently. Also, the day's main stem should have strength, in order for wealth to bring blessings. If there is too much wealth but the body is weak, and there is no help from the official star in the four pillars; or if there is little wealth but the body is strong, and there are many similar stars in the four pillars, either too much or too little will not bring blessings. The "Luo Lu Zi" says: if the month's stem forms a wealth pattern, and the day's stem is weak but meets the official star, it should be considered a wealthy destiny. However, if the official star appears first, it is actually feared to meet wealth again. The "Du Bu" says: if wealth appears first and then the official star, it can bring blessings; but if the official star appears first and then wealth, it leads to disgrace. This is exactly what is being discussed. Using wealth is not suitable when it is clearly visible in the heavenly stem. However, if the four pillars contain similar stars, wealth is actually better to be visible, so that everyone can see it, and others cannot secretly take it away.
The text says: Wealth should be hidden, for when it is concealed it becomes abundant, but when it is exposed it becomes unstable and unreliable. Whenever wealth is present in a chart, it is favorable to see the official star clearly visible without any harm; or if there is also the food god generating wealth and the seal star supporting the day's stem, making the day's stem strong, then both wealth and status will be achieved. Even if there is a seven deadly star among the branches, it is still possible to enjoy wealth, which is the meaning of the saying "when wealth is present, look at the deadly star." Wealth is most afraid of the hawk star, as the hawk star takes away the food god and thus cannot generate wealth; it also fears the sheep's knife and robbery stars, which prevent the enjoyment of wealth. If the wealth repository falls into the empty place, wealth cannot be gathered. For example, if the Jia wood stem is born in the午 month, it is harmed by the Ren water, broken by the Bing fire and the卯 wood, and taken by the Yi wood; if the Yi wood stem is born in the巳 month, it is harmed by the Kui water, broken by the Ding fire and the亥 water, and taken by the Jia wood; if the Ren water stem is born in the戌 month and belongs to the Jiazi ten-day cycle, the戌 falls into the empty place, which is of this kind. Other cases can be similarly inferred. It also says: Wealth is the source of life, and a person's birth chart should not lack wealth, but it should not be excessive either, as too much wealth makes it impure. If the original chart has no wealth but the person enters a wealth-related path, it is like having a name without reality. If there is an excess of wealth but the body is weak, and the person enters an official path or a strong wealth path, seeing wealth will drain the body's energy, and seeing the official star will harm the body. Not only will the person not achieve official status, but they will also face many troubles and misfortunes.
It is also said that wealth represents a horse and official position represents a salary, and both are essential but difficult to have at the same time. Those whose original chart contains the wealth star should benefit from an official journey; those whose original chart contains the official star should benefit from a wealth journey: a wealth journey can generate official position, and an official journey can generate wealth. If the original chart lacks official stars but has abundant wealth, and then proceeds on a wealth journey, it can still achieve fame and fortune, and occasionally even result in success in examinations. This is because wealth does not fear abundance; when there is too much wealth, it can secretly generate official position, but only if the day stem is strong enough to bear it. Conversely, if there is no wealth but too much official star, the day stem is restrained by it, which is not auspicious; if the original chart lacks official stars, then having wealth alone is considered a blessing. It is also said that the use of wealth, official position, and seven evils depends on the month branch; this is called 'taking the branch as the destiny'. If the wealth or official position is found in the month branch but not revealed in the heavenly stem, it is already sufficient for fortune. If there is no wealth or official position in the earthly branches but the heavenly stem clearly reveals them, it is a false and empty destiny; even if one proceeds on a prosperous journey, it will not be helpful.
If the month branch does not have wealth or official positions, but the year, day, or hour branches do, they can still be used. Having wealth or official positions in the month branch is called "getting the right time," in the day branch is called "getting the right position," and in the hour branch is called "achieving success." Getting the right time is the best, getting the right position is next, and achieving success is the least important. Being able to have one or two of these is even better. Wealth and official positions in the year branch only indicate prosperity of the grandfather's generation; they are not useful after middle age. It is also said that if a day master of metal (Geng or Xin) is born in the first lunar month and there is fire in other positions acting as a seven deadly star torestrain the metal, then even if the year and month branches have wood (寅 or 卯) representing wealth, there will be no inherited wealth from ancestors, and the person will suffer all their life. When they reach the position where they should become wealthy, it will instead turn into disaster. This is because strong wood generates fire, which harms the metal day master. The heavenly stem is already weak, and the wealth is supporting the seven deadly star, so it cannot bring good fortune.
It also says: The pattern of official wealth indicates a person who is honest, thrifty in conduct, and intelligent by nature, but tends to be stingy. If the wealth is strong but the self is weak, it indicates that the wife or concubine takes over the husband's authority, manages the household affairs and runs the family business; it also suggests having a capable son who works hard on one's behalf, allowing oneself to enjoy a peaceful and idle life. However, when one's fortune moves to a place of same zodiac or rival wealth, there will be many dangers for the wife or concubine. The "Dibu" says: If wealth is strong and can generate official status, one will be both rich and noble; if the official star is visible and the wealth star is hidden, one will certainly hold a high position. Hidden wealth is abundant, while exposed wealth is wasteful; if the wealth is disturbed, it is suitable to reveal it in the heavenly stem, and only when it is firmly established can it generate benefits.
The book "Zhongshu Ao Zhi" says: The one who controls others is the wife and wealth. If the heavenly stem is strong, it indicates wealth. It also says: If the body is weak but wealth is abundant, it is favorable to have brothers or the Yangren to help. It also says: If the wealth star is strong, meeting a brotherly stem does not cause harm. It also says: A person with clear wealth can associate with noble families; if the wealth star enters the storage place, it certainly causes harm to the wife; if the wealth is hidden in the earth branch, it indicates a concubine. The mnemonic says: A person with excessive wealth tends to be dull. It also says: If the big destiny and the current year form a triple harmony to create a wealth place, it is a good omen for the Hongluan spirit. The book "Qilima" says: If the source of wealth is robbed, the father's life is first affected. It also says: A man encountering abundant wealth with a weak body will tend to listen to his wife; if the wealth star is in the right place, he will become rich through his wife; if the wealth is in the place of growth, he can have thousands of acres of farmland; if the wealth is strong and generates official power, a commoner can achieve honor. The book "Yuanli Fu" says: The highly esteemed people often use wealth rather than official power. It also says: A person with wealth in a strong place has much fortune. It also says: The lonely and the orphaned are only because the wealth god is robbed. The secret says: If wealth and body are balanced and the day master is strong, it is not favorable to meet another brotherly stem.
The "Wanqi Treatise" says: When the official wealth is in a prosperous and strong position, one can enjoy comfort and happiness; encountering the劫财 (robber wealth) leads to darkness and blockage, and one suffers from complaints and unease. If the official star appears, one's life is filled with troubles and disputes; if the seven evils meet, one's affairs often end in failure. If wealth is strong but the body is weak, then misfortune is deep and blessings are shallow; if wealth is abundant but the body is weak, one needs the印绶 (favorable official) to support the day master. If the body is strong but wealth is weak, one fears the劫财 (robber wealth) taking it away. When wealth and the food god are both in the repository, the fortune is thick; but those who rely only on the food god to seek wealth will be poor and short-lived. The poem says: Official wealth is happy to meet prosperity and strength, leading to abundance in clothing and food, and the day master must be strong to bear it; if wealth is abundant but the body is weak, one's life is ruined and nothing is achieved. Another poem says: Official wealth and the official star in the month should be viewed together, and it is most feared if there is a conflict or destruction between the heavenly stems and earthly branches; if the flow year and big destiny lead to a place where wealth is strong, one will certainly become rich beyond the famous merchant Tao Zhu Gong. Another poem says: Official wealth most fears the劫财 (robber wealth) deity; destruction, harm, punishment, and conflict are even more so; where the flow year and big destiny meet the Yangren (sheep blade) place, one's life may not end but will suffer misfortune. When the wealth star is in the right position and holds power, the day master is strong, leading to both fame and fortune; if the印绶 (favorable official) also comes to assist, one will have a full cabinet of gold and jewels with continuous blessings.
Another verse says: If the body is strong but there is no official star, then wealth is taken as the useful element; if the wealth god is broken, it will bring disaster. If the body is weak but wealth is strong, one must know there is a risk of early death. Only when the official star is strong and the body is strong can it be the medium for happiness and blessings. Another verse says: Why does having too much wealth not lead to wealth? It is because the body is weak and lacks cultivation and nurturing. When the fortune reaches the place of the same kind and the body becomes strong, wealth, honor, and glory will come one after another. Another verse says: When there is too much wealth and the body is weak but the Yangren is strong, and the fortune goes to a place where the body is strong, it is very inauspicious. When the Guluan is present in a cold night, there is sorrow and resentment, and the wife in the house will cry for two or three times. Another verse says: The wealth god is disliked when it is clearly visible and only suitable when it is hidden. For a strong body, encountering it brings great good fortune. One must avoid meeting with the same kind and the劫财, as it will cause one's fame and fortune to be shared by others. Another verse says: When there is plenty of wealth and the body is strong, it brings honor and joy. When the body is strong and there is plenty of wealth, it can also generate the official star. When the body is weak but there is plenty of wealth, the wealth becomes a burden, leading to constant disputes and conflicts. Based on the above statements from different sources, the joys and dangers of having the proper wealth are now clear.
