The "true official" is the true repository of the Five Phases: those with a metal destiny see Yichou, those with a wood destiny see Guiwei, those with a fire destiny see Jiaxu, and those with a water or earth destiny see Renchen and Bingchen. These are the true official of their own destiny. The "Yantán" says: if one is born with the true official, they will certainly hold an official position in the Jade Hall. The "Miaoxuan" says: when the Five Phases are in their proper place, one can hold a position in the five government offices. Therefore, the true official of one's own destiny is considered noble. If the true official is in harmony with the native destiny, it is the best; if it is in the position of the Emperor's seat (Day Branch), it is medium; if it is in the position of the fetal month, it is the worst. Such people are steady and solid, have a strong build, and achieve notable fame. If the true official of one's own destiny is further supported by a noble destiny, it is even better. If a wood destiny person has a water official or a fire destiny person has a wood official, they are likely to take charge of others' authority and gain extra wealth. If the day ruler overcomes the official or the official overcomes the day ruler, it indicates that their career will be interrupted and then revived. If a water destiny person has a fire official or a fire destiny person has a water official, it is of lower rank than the true official of their own destiny, but it is auspicious only if the native destiny is strong. If the official is overcome or broken and there is no other auspicious god to help, or if it falls into Kongwang, they can only become a quiet Taoist monk or a scholar who fails repeatedly in exams. If there is another clear element in the Five Phases, they may become a transcendent sage; if they carry a malevolent influence, they will be poor and lowly.

There is 'Nobleman enclosing the Seal' (贵人夹印): For those with fire destiny (丙丁), their true seal is Jia Xu, but if they are enclosed by You and Hai, which are the noblemen for 丙丁, then it is considered. For those with water destiny (壬癸), their true seal is Ren Chen, but if they are enclosed by Mao and Si, which are the noblemen for 壬癸, then it is considered. There is also 'Huagai Seal' (华盖印), such as those born in the years of Hai, Mao, and Wei, who have Gui Wei. There is also 'Literary Seal' (文章印), such as Wu Yin meeting Gui Wei, Xin Si meeting Jia Xu, Geng Shen meeting Yi Chou, Gui Hai meeting Bing Chen, and Yi Hai meeting Ren Chen. These are cases where the nayin element overcomes the original destiny, and the heavenly stem again overcomes it. Also, cases like Wu Wu meeting Gui Wei, Geng Zi meeting Yi Chou, Ding You meeting Ren Chen, Ji Mao meeting Jia Xu, and Xin You meeting Bing Chen, where the heavenly stem overcomes the earthly branch and harmonizes with it. All seals should fall in the repository or tomb positions. If they are further supported by strong and flourishing elements, and if the heavenly and earthly stems exchange positions and harmonize with the nobleman and horse, then it is an extremely prosperous destiny. The most dangerous are the cases of conflict, opposition, destruction, and harm, as well as the presence of ghosts (killing spirits) in the triple harmony or six harmony positions. For example, if someone is born on Jia Xu day and has Gui You hour, their fortune is weakened.

A person with a water destiny who receives a water seal does not gain benefit; receiving a wood seal causes loss of vital energy; receiving a soil seal, if the branches are related, is called "official seal," and if not related, is called "ghost seal." There is also "blessing gathering seal": if the five positions of year, month, day, hour, and birth have no decline or weakness, and both the true seal and the biased seal are gathered here, and the seal is either sitting in a repository or in a strong position, even if there are harmful spirits here, they are subdued. This is called blessing gathering seal. There is also "calamity gathering seal": for example, a person born in the year of Guisi with a Renchen seal, if there is too much water in the column and it is buried in the辰 position, then Guisi is affected by harmful spirits; if巳 is the destiny, and the fire of巳 meets too much water, the destiny is harmed, this is called calamity gathering seal. There is also "breaking blessing into calamity seal": for example, a water destiny person receiving a water seal, or if the month, day, and hour also have much earth, the seal of the native's house shows strong ghost power, this is called breaking blessing into calamity. There is also "carrying harmful spirits seal": if harmful spirits are present in the seal, for example, a person with Renzi sees Renchen or Bingchen, from Zi to Chen is called Huagai, and for a person with Ren seeing Chen, which is considered noble.

If the official (印) turns around to harm the destiny, and there is no benevolent deity to mediate in between, it is called 'carrying a curse', which indicates misfortune. If there is 'empty official', meaning the official falls into the empty position, and the earthly branch lacks the Six Harmony to save, even if there are officials or dignitaries, they will be very lowly and achieve nothing. If there is 'self-punishing official', for example, someone born in the year Gengxu carries Yichou: a metal destiny encountering a metal official is normally good, but since Chou and Xu are in conflict, it is like metal harming metal. This is worse than having none; although there may be some small fortune, the person will remain lowly. Other cases can be judged in the same way. When discussing the official, if it can also align with the true Five Phases and the Nayin sound element, it is even better. However, those with multiple officials mainly indicate personal ease, but are unfavorable to the Six Relations and make it difficult to have children.

On the Virtues of De Xiu

The concept of "de" refers to the virtue possessed by the vital energy that is flourishing in the month of birth. "Xiu" refers to the refined and harmonious energy formed through the transformation of the Five Phases. Another interpretation states that "de" is a divine force that mitigates misfortune within yin and yang, while "xiu" represents the clear and refined energy in the universe, and the divine forces that are prominent in the four seasons. Therefore, in the month of Yin-Wu-Xu (Fire triad), the de is represented by Bing and Ding, and the xiu by Wu and Ji. In the month of Shen-Zi-Chen (Water triad), the de is represented by Ren, Ji, Wu, and Ji, and the xiu by Bing, Xin, Jia, and Ji. In the month of Si-You-Chou (Metal triad), the de is represented by Geng and Xin, and the xiu by Yi and Geng. In the month of Hai-Mao-Wei (Wood triad), the de is represented by Jia and Yi, and the xiu by Ding and Ren. If a person's destiny includes these de and xiu energies without being destroyed, clashed, controlled, or suppressed, they will possess a naturally intelligent and kind disposition. If they also encounter Xuetang (a place of learning), along with wealth and official positions, they will achieve high status. However, if these energies are clashed or controlled, their strength will be reduced.

On Jiesha and Wangshen

"Jie" means to take away, and taking away from outside is called "Jie"; "Wang" means to lose, and losing from inside is called "Wang." Jiesha falls in the absolute place of the Five Phases, while Wangshen falls in the Officialdom place of the Five Phases, and both are located on the four branches of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai. Water reaches its absolute point in Si, so the water triad of Shen-Zi-Chen takes Si as Jiesha, and the戊 soil in Si is the thing that takes away water. Fire reaches its absolute point in Hai, so the fire triad of Yin-Wu-Xu takes Hai as Jiesha, and the壬 water in Hai is the thing that takes away fire. Metal reaches its absolute point in Yin, so the metal triad of Si-You-Chou takes Yin as Jiesha, and the丙 fire in Yin is the thing that takes away metal. Wood reaches its absolute point in Shen, so the wood triad of Hai-Mao-Wei takes Shen as Jiesha, and the庚 metal in Shen is the thing that takes away wood. An old song says: When Jiesha appears, disasters come and cannot be resisted, one runs about in the field of fame and fortune in vain; one must beware of the complete loss of ancestral property, and how can wife and children be kept together for long? Another saying goes: If the four pillars are favorable and Jiesha also appears, one can rise to prominence in the current era and dominate among scholars; if there is also an official or noble in the hour position, then one is known for being upright and famous on the Imperial Inspection Board.

It is also said that if within the confines of Jiesha there is also an official star, it indicates a person who holds military power and assists the wise ruler; without needing to be angry, there is natural authority, which commands admiration and brings peace to the world. It is also said that Jiesha is originally the leader among all evil stars, and both the body palace and the main destiny should not be close to it; if it appears in the Qiu Gang configuration, it is fatal. When malevolent stars are present on the body, there is no need for further speculation. If there are no other stars in that position, one must carefully examine the Triple Harmony; if a malevolent star also appears on the Heaven Plate, then life is like a lamp in the wind, and it will soon be destroyed. Water nourishes wood, so in the Water Triple Harmony of Shen-Zi-Chen, Hai is considered Wangshen, as the Jia wood in Hai consumes the water energy. Fire nourishes earth, so in the Fire Triple Harmony of Yin-Wu-Xu, Si is considered Wangshen, as the Wu earth in Si consumes the fire energy. Metal nourishes water, so in the Metal Triple Harmony of Si-You-Chou, Shen is considered Wangshen, as the Ren water in Shen consumes the metal energy. Wood nourishes fire, so in the Wood Triple Harmony of Hai-Mao-Wei, Yin is considered Wangshen, as the Bing fire in Yin consumes the wood energy. An old song says: Wangshen and Seven Sickness cause great harm, no matter how one tries, nothing is achieved; it causes the death of children, harms the wife, and brings no ancestral fortune. Even officials may only end up with empty fame.

It is also said that if the命宫 is exactly at Wangshen, it must be seated at Growth and also meet Nobleman; if the day and hour pillars also have heaven and earth stems and branches that are in harmony, then one can disregard one's own safety and be loyal and diligent in serving the royal court. It is also said that everyone says seven煞 is 亡神, do not think that the harm caused by 亡神 is not serious; if the body palace and命宫 fall into this position, one will be poor and distressed all one's life, encountering obstacles everywhere. If malevolent stars and evil luminaries also appear, during the major period it will be like walking on thin ice; the Triple Harmony places must be clearly understood, and if the evil qi comes to flank the true destiny, it will certainly be difficult to proceed.

On Yangren

The "San Che" says: "Yang" refers to strength and firmness, and "Ren" refers to cutting and slicing. When the luck of the official position becomes excessive, the Yangren emerges; when achievements are completed and one should step down but refuses to do so, that is excessive, exceeding one's proper place, like a sheep falling onto a blade, which inevitably leads to injury. Therefore, the Yangren is always positioned before the Lu Spirit. Chen Xiyi said: the principles of yin and yang and all things dislike excessive power. When things reach their peak, fire burns out, water surges, metal breaks, earth collapses, and wood is broken; thus, when something has been achieved but has not yet reached its peak, it is a blessing, but once it reaches its peak, it turns into misfortune. The peak of prosperity is the original position of each of the ten heavenly stems:卯 is the original position of 甲, representing the peak of yang wood;辰 is the original position of 乙, representing the peak of yin wood;午 is the original position of 丙, representing the peak of yang fire;未 is the original position of 丁, representing the peak of yin fire;酉 is the original position of 庚, representing the peak of yang metal;戌 is the original position of 辛, representing the peak of yin metal;子 is the original position of 壬, representing the peak of yang water;丑 is the original position of 癸, representing the peak of yin water. These eight positions are where the Yangren of the ten heavenly stems reside.

When something reaches its extreme, its energy becomes fierce, violent, and unharmonious. Therefore, the position before the禄 (favorable position) is called theYangren (sheer edge), and the position opposite to it is called「飞刃」(flying edge). When something is already flourishing but has not yet reached its extreme, its nature is gentle and harmonious. Therefore, the position after the刃 (edge) is the禄 (favorable position). The book "Huzhongzi" says: whenever a person has a禄 (favorable position), it must be accompanied by a刃 (sheer edge) to protect him. This is the meaning of that statement. The "Yixing Mingshu" says: having multipleYangren (sheer edges) along with a禄 (favorable position) indicates wealth, nobility, and possession of gold and jade. The "Dongxuan Jing" says: when the official star and the seal are supportive, the fortune increases mutually. This means that whenYangren (sheer edge) is combined with禄 (favorable position), and also supported by the official star and the seal, it is considered a favorable combination. However, if someone relies solely on theYangren (sheer edge), it indicates protruding eyes, a quick temper, violent behavior, and association with wicked people. If it is in a prosperous position, the effect is somewhat better, but if it is in a dead or exhausted position, the effect is much worse. Those whose five elements are in a declining position and encounterYangren (sheer edge) are prone to suffer from swollen glands, epidemic diseases, or injuries from weapons. Regardless of their status, they are often burdened with miscellaneous affairs and forced to work hard, rarely enjoying peace and ease. The "Taiyi Jing" says: those born on the sixth day of the ten heavenly stems (Jia) who encounterYimao orDingmao are considered to have trueYangren (sheer edge). If they encounter it repeatedly, they are likely to suffer from disabilities, loss of official position, and decline in fortune, especially in their later years. Other instances of卯 are considered as偏刃 (biased edge), which are less harmful.

The Guangxin Collection mentions "blade head wealth," such as when someone with a Jia day stem encounters Jiamao, which is called "eliminating calamity," indicating the complete loss of wealth. Common people often engage in occupations such as butchery, selling alcohol, or using tools like knives and saws, or may die from robbery. There is also "blade head ghost," such as when someone with a Jia day stem encounters Xinyou, called "holding the blade calamity," indicating a bad end. Even if one's fate is of high status, the outcome is unpredictable; those with Jia or Yi day stems encountering this are especially dangerous, often dying from brain abscess or back abscess. The Jinshu Mingjie mentions "shearing by the blade," such as a person born in Jiayin year encountering the tiger (Yin) or rabbit (Mao), or a person with Jia or Wu day stem encountering the dog (Xu) or rabbit (Mao). If encountered in the year or month, it is somewhat tolerable, but if encountered in the day or hour, it is extremely dangerous. If encountering two such instances and also meeting Kongwang, even without direct shearing, one is likely to be exiled or sent away in old age, indicating a bad end. There is also "linked blades," such as combinations like Gengxu, Xinyou, Wuwu, Jiwei, Bingwu, Dingwei, Jiachen, Yimao, Renzi, and Guichou, all of which are ominous signs.

The person with a metal destiny who encounters consecutive sharp blades faces an urgent situation, while the person with a wood destiny encounters it slightly more slowly. If a woman's destiny is affected by this, she will certainly harm her husband and children, and be unchaste. The "Li Yu Ge" says: When the sharp blade is inverted and accompanies evil spirits, the body and form are inevitably thrown into ditches and ravines. It also says: When the flying blade meets the reversed spear, there will be inevitable discord. If a petty person possesses it, it will bring disaster. If the kongwang and the cutting path appear at the same time, how can this person escape the worldly troubles? It also says: When the sharp blade is combined with the reversed spear, the person will certainly become a headless ghost. This refers to the sharp blade combined with various evil spirits being especially dangerous. For ordinary people, the most feared aspect of their fate is encountering the sharp blade, which causes affairs to be delayed and sluggish. People of the four classes—scholars, farmers, artisans, and merchants—dislike it. The classics say: When the sharp blade is in operation, wealth is wasted. This refers to this. The "Yu Xiao Bao Lian" mentions the "Lan Pei Qing Cheng Ge," which refers to a nobleman riding a horse and looking forward to see the sharp blade, like a sword on the horse's head. For example, a person born in the year of Gengwu who has a day or hour of Yiyou or Jiyou and also has Jiashen, this combination matches this pattern. The horse of the year of Wu is in the hour of Shen, the official of Geng is also in Shen, the nobleman of Yi is in Shen, and the sharp blade of Geng is in You. The nobleman of Yi takes Jiashen as the post-horse and looks forward to the sharp blade, hence it is called "Lan Pei Qing Cheng."

Those who have the Yang Blade pattern often become officials who enforce the law with integrity and strictness; if they also have other auspicious deities, they may become harsh officials capable of subduing wicked people. According to Zi Ping's theory, the five Yang heavenly stems—Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, and Ren—each have a Yang Blade, while the five Yin heavenly stems—Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, and Gui—do not have a Yang Blade, but instead have the official star, which causes similar troubles as the Yang Blade. This shows that the term "Yang Blade" refers to the Yang aspect of Yin and Yang, not the sheep in the character for "sheep blade." Its meaning is explained in detail in the section "Discussion on the Yang Blade Pattern" later on.

On Kongwang

"Kong" refers to the absence of something real, while "wang" refers to the absence of something existing. The "Shen Bai Jing" says: "Kongwang, kongwang, how many kinds are there? Where the ten heavenly stems cannot reach, it is considered kong." The "Dong Xuan Jing" says: "When the hidden numbers are exhausted, wang arises from this." Therefore, the places where each jia ten-day cycle is fully arranged are called kongwang: having a position but no official rank is called kong; having a terrestrial branch but not matching the heavenly stem is called wang. For example, in the jiazi cycle, when the heavenly stems are arranged in order to the western direction, the ten heavenly stems are exactly used up, so there is no xu or hai to match. The rest of the five cycles can be seen in the same way, which is kongwang. However, there is also reality within kong and existence within wang, so one cannot simply conclude that kongwang is a凶 (adverse) sign. The "Luolu Zi" discusses kongwang, saying: five yang heavenly stems each use one yang, and five yin heavenly stems each use one yin. For example, jiazi, bingyin, wuchen, gengwu, and renshen use xu instead of hai; yichou, dingmao, jisi, xinwei, and guiyou use hai instead of xu. Yang heavenly stems belong to yang years, and yin heavenly stems belong to yin years. There is another view: from jiazi to wuchen, xu is considered kongwang; from jisi to guiyou, hai is considered kongwang, divided into the first five years and the last five years.

Among these, there is a distinction between light and heavy: from Jiazi to Wuchen, the five years, seeing Renxu is considered heavy, while seeing Wuxu and similar are considered light; from Jisi to Guiyou, the five years, seeing Guihai is considered heavy, while seeing Yihai and similar are considered light. For example, a person born in the year Jiazi who has the hour Jiaxu is considered a direct occurrence at the hour, and it is still considered light; whereas a person born in the year Jisi who has the hour Guihai is considered an internal conflict at the hour, and it is the most severe. The "Zhi Mi Fu" says: when the official star falls into Kongwang, one must distinguish whether it is in the previous or following zhi, to indicate the difference between yin and yang and to clarify the order of light and heavy. The "Bazi Jin Shu" says: in the Jiayin shen, the壬癸 fall into Kongwang; in the Jiachen shen, the甲乙 fall into Kongwang; in the Jiashen shen, the丙丁 fall into Kongwang; in the Jiaxu shen, the庚辛 fall into Kongwang. This is deducing the heavenly stems based on the two Kongwang positions of the earthly branches, and it is also called Shi'e Dabai. Those born on such days are generally poor and lowly. Any person with the Kongwang evil star, if it is in a prosperous and vigorous position, will have a broad-minded character, easily gain empty fame, be tall and well-fed, and often receive unexpected and unintentional good fortune; if it is in a dead or exhausted position, then the person will experience continuous failure and wandering throughout their life. However, as long as it falls in a position where I have strength, it will not cause harm.

It is most undesirable for one's birth stem and branch to match the Tianzhong (Kongwang), which is called "small person in position," leading the person to be cunning and deceitful, capable of anything. If Kongwang is instead overcome by me, it is called "Tianzhong fei yang," which instead becomes a blessing of outstanding success (note: for example, a person born in Wuwu fire sees Jiazi metal). This star's nature is changeable: if it shares a column with Guanfu, the person is flattering and skilled in words; if it shares a column with Jiesha, the person is cunning and brave; if it shares a column with Wangshen, the person is wandering without a fixed place; if it shares a column with Dahaos, the person is confused and reckless; if it shares a column with Jianlu, the person will have a life of ruin and loss of wealth; if it shares a column with Xianchi or Liuhai, the person is prone to suffer misfortune and sudden death. Only those who share a column with Jiegui, Huagai, Sanqi, or Xuetang are considered exceptionally intelligent and beyond the common. As for Kongwang, it is not only important when both the Tai sui and the four pillars contain the position of Kongwang in the ten-year cycle; if the Tai sui and the day pillar exchange positions with Kongwang, it is even worse. When the real reflects the empty, the real can still reveal the empty; but when the empty reflects the empty, nothing can reveal the real, so those who have mutual Kongwang suffer serious calamities.

For example, in the year of Jiazi and the month of Renxu: the correct Kongwang of the Jiazi ten-day period falls on Xu, which coincides with Renxu; and Renxu also belongs to the Jiayin ten-day period, where the Kongwang of the Jiayin ten-day period falls on Zi. This mutual exchange indicates that the person will suffer from the loss of wealth throughout their life and great destruction of their family home, and similar consequences follow. If the day and hour columns exchange Kongwang, the hour column's conflict is more urgent, while the day column's conflict is less urgent. If the day column is afflicted and the hour column has a conflict, or the hour column is afflicted and the day column has a conflict, it still indicates some fortune, but there will be unavoidable hardships. It is also said that this evil star cannot be entirely considered as a凶 (evil) factor. If there are evil spirits and malevolent stars gathering to bring misfortune in the column, the Kongwang is needed to resolve the situation; in such cases, Kongwang should not be combined with its counterpart, as the combination would nullify the Kongwang. However, if there are blessings such as禄 (favorable position), 马 (horse, symbolizing mobility), 财 (wealth), and 官 (official position) gathered in the column, the presence of Kongwang is most feared as it disperses these blessings; in such cases, Kongwang is actually favorable if it is combined with its counterpart, as the combination would nullify the Kongwang. If there is neither conflict, combination, nor punishment, it is called vacuum Kongwang. Vacuum Kongwang falling on the four beginning months (寅, 申, 巳, 亥) is the most harmful, and the person can only make a living through small skills and relying on others. Additionally, vacuum Kongwang is also found in the water and earth of the Jiazi ten-day period, the metal of the Jiaxu ten-day period, the fire and earth of the Jiashen ten-day period, the fire and earth of the Jiawu ten-day period, the wood of the Jiachen ten-day period, and the water and earth of the Jiayin ten-day period.

It is also said that sound can be produced only because there is emptiness in the middle. Therefore, the destiny of a great person should possess the virtue of being open and empty in the middle. If the empty position is itself strong and useful, it indicates a capacity for great response and effect. If the month, day, and hour all fall into the empty position, it does not hinder one from becoming a great person. If only two of them fall into the empty position, although one may hold an official position, it will not be great. It is also said that if a person's destiny falls into the empty position, those who have it in the hour position tend to be stubborn in temperament, ambitious but not practical, and if they also meet the Huagai star, they will have few children. Those who have it in the day position tend to be born as a secondary child, or to separate from their wife or concubine, and if they meet an accidental conjunction, they may be inclined to licentiousness. An old song says: Being born with the empty position is most feared, and when the empty position appears, one naturally becomes confused and ignorant. Even if you calculate nine steps out of ten, you will still end up drifting here and there. It is also said that if the built-up fortune (Jian Lu) falls into the empty position, it is just a hollow reputation, and one will study all one's life without achieving anything. If the post-horse and nobleman stars come to rescue, even if one obtains an official position, it will be interrupted. It is also said that the combinations of Jiayin, Wuwu, and Gengshen, when they fall on the earth branch Chou, are the most unkind; those who were born with their proper destiny should enjoy official rank, but because they meet the five ghosts, they will become poor and decline.

The Heavenly Stem Jiayin (甲寅) has a Nayin sound element of water, and when it meets Xinchou (辛丑), which has a Nayin sound element of earth, it is a case where a ghost element controls the destiny, which is unfavorable. When Wuwu (戊午) meets Dingchou (丁丑) or Gengshen (庚申) meets Yichou (乙丑), they are both cases of Kongwang (空亡), and it is also unfavorable if they control the destiny. It is also said that the two positions in the sixty-jing cycle are called Tianzhong (天中). If they meet a harmonious combination and the stem is in the position of growth or prosperity, it is not ominous. If further combined with a clash, control, and movement of the禄 (lucky position), then official rank will rise and position will be higher. For example, those born in the year of Si-You-Chou (巳酉丑), with the month of Dingchou (丁丑), day of Guiwei (癸未), and hour of Wuwu (戊午), the hour and day are originally in Kongwang, but the fire generated by the interaction of Wu and Gui is strong in the position of Wu, thus forming a noble pattern. This is because fire is in Kongwang but still has brightness. It is also said that if the star of official seal is in Kongwang, and it follows and reaches the position of storage, there will be great fortune. If it can also be accompanied by noble elements and return to the original position, even with a harmful element, it can achieve the position of giving advice to the emperor. For example, someone born in the year of Jiayin (甲午), month of Guiyou (癸酉), day of Bingzi (丙子), and hour of Renchen (壬辰), the hour of Renchen is in Kongwang, but it forms a Six Harmony with Guiyou, and is also in the position of storage with noble elements, thus forming a good pattern. This is because water is in Kongwang but still flows. The classic says: if gold is in Kongwang, it will ring; if fire is in Kongwang, it will shine; if water is in Kongwang, it will be clear; if wood is in Kongwang, it will break; if earth is in Kongwang, it will collapse.

This is exactly the point being made. It also says that an empty fate (空亡) is not necessarily bad, but if during a person's life cycle it meets punishment and clash (刑冲), it becomes a harmful ghost (虚煞). If a scholar encounters this, his fame will suddenly rise. For example, in the case of Jiashen, Dingchou, Yihai, and Jiashen, when they entered the Renwu cycle, they held important positions. In the case of Yiwei, Yiyou, Yichou, and Dinghai, when they entered the Xinsi cycle, they became officials in charge of supervision, and their reputation greatly increased. If Renyin is empty fate, but we use a similar Renshen to clash with it, the clash will not be effective, which is the most harmful. There is a term called "interrupting empty fate" (截路空亡), which is like a person encountering a big river on the way, unable to move forward or cross over, so it is called interrupting the path. It is only determined by looking at the time of birth from the day stem. For example, on Jia and Ji days, the twelve hours are hidden, and the hours of Shen and You hide Ren and Gui. Therefore, on Jia and Ji days, if the time is Shen or You, on Yi and Geng days, if the time is Wu or Wei, on Bing and Xin days, if the time is Chen or Si, on Ding and Ren days, if the time is Yin or Mao, and on Wu and Gui days, if the time is Xu or Hai, it is because these two hours are met with Ren and Gui water. This kind of empty fate is not only bad when it appears in the fate, but also should be avoided in all matters such as travel, seeking wealth, trade, taking office, and marriage.

There are four "Great Empty Wastes": among the six Jia (Heavenly Stems), the Jia Chen and Jia Xu decades contain all five elements of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. However, in the Jia Zi and Jia Wu decades, people are missing water; in the Jia Yin and Jia Shen decades, people lack metal. These four decades are all missing elements. If someone is born in the Jia Zi or Jia Wu decades and lacks water, or is born in the Jia Yin or Jia Shen decades and sees metal, it is called a direct offense. If the birth year does not commit the offense, but during later years one moves into the element of water or metal, it is also considered an offense. If one carries this, it leads to a life of obstacles and difficulties, regardless of whether one is poor or rich. It also indicates early death. If one encounters this in three places, death can occur suddenly. Hu Zhongzi said: Yan Hui died young because he committed the Four Great Empty Wastes. This refers exactly to this. The "Micro Classic" mentions "Five Ghosts Empty Wastes": for those born on Jia or Ji days, if they encounter Si or Wu; for those born on Yi or Geng days, if they encounter Yin or Mao; for those born on Bing or Xin days, if they encounter Zi or Chou; for those born on Ding or Ren days, if they encounter Xu or Hai; and for those born on Wu or Gui days, if they encounter Shen or You. If one's fortune or life period reaches these places, it leads to poverty. There is also "Harmful Empty Wastes": Jia and Yi encounter Wu, Bing and Ding encounter Shen, Wu and Ji encounter Si, Geng and Xin encounter Yin, Ren and Gui encounter You and Chou. This causes harm to one's spouse. There is also "Breaking Ancestral Legacy Empty Wastes": Jia, Yi, Bing, and Ding encounter the same as above; Wu and Ji encounter Xu, Geng and Xin encounter Zi, Ren and Gui encounter Yin. Those who encounter these will break their ancestral legacy. One should refer to these together.

On Yuanchen

"Yuanchen" is a term that is separate and not combined. When yang comes before yin, there is suppression, and suppression prevents things from unfolding smoothly; when yin comes before yang, there is direct opposition without smoothness, leading to impatience and confusion in affairs, making it difficult to cooperate with others. Therefore, for a male born in a yang year or a female born in a yin year, the branch immediately before the one opposite to their birth branch is taken as the main Yuanchen. For a male born in a yin year or a female born in a yang year, the branch immediately after the opposite branch is taken. For example, a man born in the year Jiazi (rat) is opposite to Jiawu (horse), so his main Yuanchen is Yiwu (ox). A man born in the year Yichou (ox) is opposite to Yiwei (sheep), so his main Yuanchen is Jiawu (horse). The rest of the stems are taken in the same way between Wu and Wei. The reason it is considered凶 (unfavorable) is because it is at the point of direct opposition: if a drum is beaten on the left, the wind煞 (wind evil) is on the right; if a drum is beaten on the right, the wind煞 is on the left. Therefore, for both yin and yang genders, the choice of Yuanchen differs between the preceding and succeeding branches. If a person's age or destiny comes to Yuanchen, they are like an object exposed to the wind, shaking and turning upside down, unable to rest. Either they will suffer from internal illness or face external troubles. Even if they are wealthy, powerful, and prominent, during the ten years of this major period, they should be feared.

Those who serve in official positions will certainly face demotion and exile, while those at home will certainly encounter misfortune. Even with auspicious deities supporting them, they cannot escape the intermingling of fortune and misfortune. Particularly dangerous is the pattern of first good fortune followed by misfortune. When the situation is at its peak and about to change, misfortune is most likely to occur. Those born with Yuanchen in their birth year have coarse and simple appearances, with high cheekbones, a low nose bridge, a broad mouth, fierce eyes, a prominent back of the head, a high buttocks, stiff hands and feet, and a deep, heavy voice. If they are in a flourishing place, they will be carefree and have a great capacity, but they will be unable to distinguish right from wrong or good from evil, acting confused and disordered. If they are in a dead or exhausted place, they will be poor and shallow, with a deformed appearance, a dull speech, and lack of shame, leading to a life of failure and hardship, indulging in drinking and lust, and willingly sinking into degeneracy. If Yuanchen and Guanfu are in the same column, they will often suffer from unnecessary disturbances. If they carry Jiesha, they will be careless about details, often inviting danger and disgrace, being empty and lowly, and lacking shame. Women with Yuanchen have a rough and coarse voice like men, a murky disposition, and engage in improper relationships with servants and lower-class people, being possessed by ghosts and spirits, and not following proper etiquette. They will have a life full of misfortunes. Even if they have sons, they will be stubborn and disrespectful to their parents.

Commonly circulated versions of the "Mouse Avoids Goat Head Song" do not distinguish between men and women and are therefore not reliable. The "Luolu Zi" says even Confucius feared Yuanchen; Lin Kai believed Yuanchen, this evil star, brings extremely bad fortune, and when several branches are exchanged and meet, it becomes even more inauspicious. However, if there is a harmonious combination, it should be considered auspicious. The "Dongxuan Jing" says that when Yuanchen meets a harmonious combination, it becomes very smooth and prosperous, which is exactly what this means. The "Guangxin Ji" cites Wu's official's birth chart, Ji Mao, Ji Shen, Ji Si, Jia Xu, and滕 Geng's confidential advisor's birth chart, Yi Chou, Ren Wu, Yi Chou, Ren Wu—did these two birth charts not commit Yuanchen? Li Jigufu said: generally, noble destinies require encountering evil stars to be noticed and promoted by the sovereign, so Lin Kai's view is one-sided. Xu Ziping said: Yuanchen is an inherent harmful aspect in the birth chart, such as Jia meeting Shen and Geng, Yi meeting You and Xin, etc. A person's year, month, day, and hour originally have seven harmful stars, which are already harmful aspects. If the year or the fortune meets them again, it is called committing Yuanchen, and the harm is even greater. If the original birth chart does not have it, the harm is lighter. In summary, Yuanchen, this evil star, should be treated similarly to Wangshen, Jiesha, Yangren, and Kongwang. The "Luolu Zi·Xiaoxi Fu" and the "Xuixin Fu" mention "Yuanchen water goes away," which also refers to the names of divine stars. It is evident that the ancients' statements are correct.

On the malevolent influence of hidden metal

These three evils are products of the Earlier Heaven numbers conflicting in the four cardinal directions. The numbers for Zi and Wu are each nine, and for Mao and You each six, totaling thirty; counting from Zi in order, when the count reaches thirty it arrives at Si, which is the true evil of the four central directions (Zi, Wu, Mao, You). The numbers for Yin and Shen are each seven, and for Si and Hai each four, totaling twenty-two; counting from Zi in order, when the count reaches twenty-two it arrives at You, which is the true evil of the four beginning directions (Yin, Shen, Si, Hai). The numbers for Chen and Xu are each five, and for Chou and Wei each eight, totaling twenty-six; counting from Zi in order, when the count reaches twenty-six it arrives at Chou, which is the true evil of the four seasonal directions (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei). It is evident that these evils are derived from numbers; all divine evils originate from numbers, and are of the same category as the禄 and 马. This single evil has three names: one is 吟呻, another is 破碎, and the third is 白衣. In years of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You, the evil is located at Si; in years of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai, it is located at You; in years of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, it is located at Chou. Si is the place where metal is born, and within Si there is also the official position of Bing fire. When the metal energy arrives, it is overcome by fire, leading to punishment by rod, imprisonment, and suffering, hence it is called 吟呻.

The metal element is strong in the hour of You, which is the time of strictness and severity. With the assistance of Xin metal, everything meets with destruction, leading to calamities involving broken limbs and bloodshed, hence the name 'Fragmentation'. The hour of Chou is the repository of metal, located at the end of the four seasons near the gate of ghosts, causing troubles with relatives and mourning, hence the name 'White Robe'. Among the Five Phases, only metal can bring about destruction, so it is generally called 'the evil of hidden metal'. If this star is in a prosperous and strong position, the person will have a broad mind, decisive actions, and a clear appearance. If not short-lived or injured, they will suffer from leprosy or paralysis. If it is in a dead or exhausted position, the person will be cruel and venomous, with an unpredictable red and white complexion, deceitful words, and a hidden dagger behind a smile. If this star is in the same column as Guanfu, there will be sudden legal troubles; if with Jiesha, sudden death or loss; if with Baihu and Yangren, sudden bloodshed and injuries; if with Guiren and Jianlu, the calamity will be less severe. If the Five Phases are prosperous and strong, and there are auspicious stars to save, then even if the fate is of a lowly rank, there will be no harm. However, if it is of a humble fate and meets various evil stars, the danger will be even greater.

It is also said that if this evil star falls in the growth position of metal, it indicates a risk of great wind and paralysis; if it falls in the flourishing position of metal, it indicates a risk of water swelling and poisoning; if it falls in the burial position of metal, it indicates a risk of harming children and a dangerous death. If it is accompanied by the Three Punishments and also has the virtue god and nobleman, it may instead lead to holding high official positions and commanding military power. In general, this evil star is not auspicious; if a person's destiny encounters it, it is not advisable; if it encounters it in the current year, it indicates mourning, crying, theft and disturbance, and verbal disputes and financial loss. If a child encounters it, there is a risk of scalding or fire; otherwise, there will be signs of scars and injuries on the body. The classics say: there is no greater error and deviation than punishment and harm, yet sometimes it may be auspicious; there is no greater contradiction and disorder than conflict and destruction, yet it is not necessarily all bad. This is exactly the meaning being explained.

On Zaisha (Disaster Star)

The nature of Zaisha is fierce and bold, always preceding Jiesha, and it specifically clashes with the General Star. Therefore, it is called Zaisha. For example, in the Water triad of Shen-Zi-Chen, the General Star is at Zi, and Wu clashes with Zi; in the Fire triad of Yin-Wu-Xu, the General Star is at Wu, and Zi clashes with Wu; in the Metal triad of Si-You-Chou, the General Star is at You, and Mao clashes with You; in the Wood triad of Hai-Mao-Wei, the General Star is at Mao, and You clashes with Mao. These are all instances of Zaisha. This evil star causes sudden death by fire or drowning, and those belonging to metal or wood should beware of beatings or cuts, while those belonging to earth should beware of falling. It also brings plague and disease, which are extremely dangerous. If aided by auspicious deities, it may instead indicate military power and authority. It is similar to Jiesha, and it is good to see the official star or the seal star in a flourishing position. The Shengbai Jing says: Zaisha fears being overcome; if it is in a position that nourishes me, it becomes auspicious. This is exactly what is meant.

On the Six Calamities

"厄" means encountering calamity. It is always positioned one place before the Post-horse and two places after Jiesha. Death without being able to be reborn is called "厄." Shen-Zi-Chen is the Water trinity, and Water dies at Mao; Yin-Wu-Xu is the Fire trinity, and Fire dies at You; Hai-Mao-Wei is the Wood trinity, and Wood dies at Wu; Si-You-Chou is the Metal trinity, and Metal dies at Zi. Therefore, these positions are called the Six厄. If there is protection and support, and one also meets favorable and prosperous conditions along with the assistance of noble energy, it is still considered auspicious; but ultimately, one's life will remain obstructed. The "Hu Zhong Zi" says: the Six厄 is a malevolent force that deprives one of official rank. Li Guang never received a title of marquis, which is precisely the reason for this.

Discussion on Goujiao

"The 'Gou' signifies connection, and 'Jiao' refers to entanglement. These two evils often oppose each other, and they appear in pairs like Wangshen and Jiesha. For a male with a yang birth year or a female with a yin birth year, the first three positions in their destiny are Gou, and the last three are Jiao. For a male with a yin birth year or a female with a yang birth year, the first three positions are Jiao, and the last three are Gou. For example, a person born in Jiazi, a yang year, has卯 (Mao) as Gou and酉 (Wu) as Jiao; a person born in Yichou, a yin year, has辰 (Chen) as Jiao and戌 (Xu) as Gou. An old rhyme says: 'The claws and teeth evils, when they are three positions away from the native's destiny, are most dangerous if the metal god and Yangren are present. If the evil is harmful and there is no fortune god to save, it will certainly result in injury from snakes and tigers. This evil is most dangerous when it appears with the metal god and White Tiger; if they are present, it is ominous. Injury is not limited to tigers and wolves; cattle, horses, dogs, and other animals can also injure people. If it does not harm the person and is accompanied by a fortune god, it is not a concern. Generally, if a person's destiny encounters this evil, and they can overcome it, they are usually clever-minded, often holding positions of law enforcement or serving as a general, commanding execution in a region. If the evil overcomes the person, it indicates a violent death. For wicked people, it brings sudden misfortune. When this evil appears in the current year, it also indicates disputes and legal troubles. It is also said that when both evils are present, the disaster is severe, and when only one is present, the disaster is lighter. Another saying is that if there is a ghost (a god that harms the person) in the pillar, the disaster is heavy, but if there is no ghost, the disaster is light."

Discussion on Guchen and Guasu

Ancient scholars have said: a woman who is old and without a husband is called "guo", and a child who is young and without a father is called "gu". This is the original meaning of "guo" and "gu". "Chen" refers to stars, and "su" refers to star mansions, both referring to such deities. When a person's destiny is affected by these star deities, it will result in the situation described above, namely being lonely and isolated. For example, the three branches Hai, Zi, and Chou all belong to the same direction. If we move forward one step to Yin, it becomes "Guchen", and if we move back one step to Xu, it becomes "Gusu". Crossing over Jiao is considered "gu", and retreating to Jiao is considered "guo". The same principle applies to the other three directions. This contains the meaning of yin and yang being separated and feeling lonely. Moreover, Yin is the beginning of spring, and Chen is the end of spring; Si is the beginning of summer, and Wei is the end of summer; Shen is the beginning of autumn, and Xu is the end of autumn; Hai is the beginning of winter, and Chou is the end of winter. These are all deities where yin and yang are divided and separated, and where the four seasons change. The "San Che" says: in the process of creation and transformation, the one that generates me is my mother, the one that overcomes me is my husband, and the one that I overcome is my wife. Hai, Zi, and Chou belong to the northern water direction. Water takes metal as its mother, and metal is exhausted at Yin, which is the mother's exhaustion. Water takes fire as its wife, and fire is buried at Xu, which is the wife's burial place.

The Southern Trine of Fire consists of Si, Wu, and Wei. Fire is born from Wood, so Wood is its mother. Wood is exhausted in Shen, so Shen is the place where the mother of Fire is exhausted. Fire also overcomes Water, so Water is its husband. Water is buried in Chen, so Chen is the place where the husband of Fire is buried. The Trine of Wood consists of Yin, Mao, and Chen. Wood is born from Water, so Water is its mother. Water is exhausted in Si, so Si is the place where the mother of Wood is exhausted. Wood also overcomes Metal, so Metal is its husband. Metal is buried in Chou, so Chou is the place where the husband of Wood is buried. Therefore, Guchen refers to the place where the mother is exhausted, and Guasu refers to the place where the husband or wife is buried. This explanation is more accurate. The Luolu Zi says: when the bones and flesh are separated on the way, Guchen and Guasu are especially disliked when they fall in the opposite corner. The Yumen Ji says: Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai are called 'Jiao', while Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are called 'Ge'. Advancing one position is Yang, which is unfavorable to the father; retreating one position is Yin, which is unfavorable to the mother. It also says: if Guchen and Guasu fall in a Yang position, they harm the father; if they fall in a Yin position, they harm the mother. For example, those born in the years of Yin, Mao, and Chen, Si is Guchen and Chou is Guasu. Yin and Chen belong to the Yang position, while Chou and Si belong to the Yin position. If males or females are born in these years and encounter these, even if they are biological children, they are likely to have discord.

Wang Shi said: For a man's destiny, if he is born in the place where his wife's energy is exhausted and also encounters Guchen, he will have difficulty in marriage throughout his life; for a woman's destiny, if she is born in the place where her husband's energy is exhausted and also meets Guasu, she will have to remarry several times but cannot live happily with one husband. For example, a person born in the year Xinchou has Gengyin in his destiny. Yin is the Guchen of Chou, and Chou is the Guasu of Yin. Yin and Chou are mutual Guchen and Guasu. The term "隔角" refers to the fact that Yin and Chou are separated by the Gen trigram. The four trigrams Qian, Kun, Gen, and Xun are like four corners. The "Zhu Jing Jing" says: If a person's destiny is afflicted by Guchen and Guasu, he will have a thin and sharp appearance, his bones will be exposed, his face lacks a harmonious expression, and it will be unfavorable for his six relations. If he is in a place of vitality and strength, it is somewhat better, but if he is in a place of death and exhaustion, it will be more severe. If he shares the column with the Post-horse, he will be dissolute and live in another place; if he shares the column with Kongwang, he will lose his support at a young age; if he shares the column with the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit and the Guest spirit, his parents will die one after another. He will experience many heavy losses and misfortunes, his family members will scatter, and he will live a lonely and bitter life. If he enters a noble destiny, he will often be a concubine in his wife's family; if he enters a lowly destiny, he will inevitably have to migrate and wander. The "Gui Gu Yi Wen" says: If the branches are connected continuously, it is not considered as Guchen and Guasu. For example, if Hai is connected with Yin and Xu, or Yin is connected with Chou and Si; or if the heavenly stem and earthly branch are in mutual orientation and the Nobleman is in the middle, even though Guchen and Guasu are involved, they are not treated as Guchen and Guasu.

The Guanglu says: "Well frame slanting against the well frame is called Guchen and Guasu." If the heavenly stem also carries Dao Shi (Xiao Shen), it is called "Well frame Dao Shi." If someone is born in the years of Si, Wu, or Wei and is born during the three summer months, they carry two layers of Guchen and Guasu, which indicate harm to wife and children, few relatives, inability to retain wealth, and more daughters. If they also carry variousInauspicious Sha, they will not have a good end. The Luolu Zi says: "By observing the yin to see the calamities of the yang side, the Tai Su should not conflict with Guchen; by observing the yang to see the calamities of the yin side, the Tian Nian should avoid encountering Guasu." This means that the small years and Tai Su should not conflict with them. For yang destiny, Guchen is more important; for yin destiny, Guasu is more important.

On Tianluo and Diwang

The concept of "Tianluo" and "Diwang" is quite clear. But why are Xu and Hai considered Tianluo, and Chen and Si considered Diwang? Because the sky tilts toward the northwest, and Xu and Hai are the endpoints of the six yin branches; the earth sinks toward the southeast, and Chen and Si are the endpoints of the six yang branches. When yin and yang reach their extremes, they become obscure and unclear, just like a person trapped in a net. This is the meaning behind their names. The "Hu Zhongzi" says: dragons and snakes are mixed together, but it is particularly unfavorable for those born in the Chen year; pigs and dogs invade, but it is especially disliked for the character Hai. Dragon refers to Chen, and snake refers to Si; those born in the Chen year who have Si in their destiny, and those born in the Si year who have Chen in their destiny, are called "dragon and snake mixed together." This situation does not affect men's fate, but for women, it leads to broken marriages, harm to children, a thin destiny, and frequent illness. Among these, those born in the Chen year with Si is more severe, while those born in the Si year with Chen is less severe, because a dragon born in a snake's nest is retreating, while a snake born in a dragon's nest is advancing. Pig refers to Hai, and dog refers to Xu; those born in the Xu year who have Hai in their destiny, and those born in the Hai year who have Xu in their destiny, are called "pig and dog invasion."

This type of situation, called "Pig and Dog Invade," does not harm women, but men face continuous obstacles and conflicts, which may harm their ancestors' legacy and injure their wives. Among these, those born in the year of Xu (戌) who have the year of Hai (亥) are less affected, while those born in the year of Hai who have the year of Xu are more affected, because a dog entering a pig group is an advance, but a pig entering a dog group will be injured. The "Various Books" also say: "When dragons and snakes are mixed, one should always be cautious about the dangers to women; when pigs and dogs invade, one often worries about the hardships faced by the husband." This shows that men fear Tianluo (Heavenly Net) and women fear Diwang (Earthly Net). There is also a distinction: people with fire destiny have Tianluo, while those with water and earth destiny have Diwang; those with metal and wood destiny do not have either. If a person's destiny is accompanied by a net, it often indicates difficulties and lack of smoothness. If there are also evil stars and the five elements are weak, it will definitely lead to a fatal end. When one's destiny reaches the area of the net, the situation will be the same. For example, someone born on the first day of the first month of the year Xu will be affected by Tianluo for one year; someone born on the fifteenth day will be affected by Tianluo for fifteen years; if the birth time is also Xu, the effect will increase to thirty years. If someone is born in the year Xu with the month Hai, or born at the time Hai with the day Xu, and these combinations appear, it is called "double offense."

Then the calamity will not stop. The calculation for Diwang is the same as above. If Tianluo and Diwang overlap, the harm will be especially severe. The "Li Yu Ge" says: When a person is born with Diwang and Tianluo combined, how can the parents remain safe for long? For example, if someone is born in the year of Jiachen and has the stem Jia in their destiny, or if someone is born in the year of Jiaxu and has the stem Jiachen in their destiny, only those born with these two branches are considered to be caught in the net.

On the Ten Evils of Great Defeat

The so-called "Ten Evils" are used as a metaphor for laws: if a person commits one of the ten serious offenses, they are not pardoned. The term "Great Defeat" is used as a metaphor from military strategy: a complete defeat in battle where no one survives, used to describe extreme misfortune. In the ten days of each of the six jia cycles, there are ten days when the day's ruler's luck falls on the empty void. For example, on the days of Jia Chen and Yi Si, Jia's luck is in寅 and Yi's luck is in卯, while the Jia Zi cycle has寅 and卯 as the empty void. Similarly, on the day of Ren Shen, Ren's luck is in亥, and the Jia Zi cycle has亥 as the empty void. Other days such as Bing Shen, Ding Hai, Geng Chen, Wu Xu, Gui Hai, Xin Si, and Yi Chou are also determined in the same way. If a person's fate is affected by this, it should be based on the day pillar, and other pillars are not considered. Moreover, being affected does not necessarily mean misfortune: if there are auspicious deities supporting or noble influences assisting, it should still be considered favorable.

The Yuanbai Jing says: The ten evils are altogether ten day branches. Each year has its own harmful influence, which should be considered separately. For example, in the year of Gengxu, if the day is Jiachen; in the year of Xihai, if the day is Yisi; in the year of Renyin, if the day is Bingshen; in the year of Guisi, if the day is Dinghai; in the year of Jiachen, if the day is Wuxu; in the year of Yiwei, if the day is Yichou; in the year of Jiaxu, if the day is Gengchen; in the year of Yihai, if the day is Xinsi; in the year of Bingyin, if the day is Renshen; in the year of Dingsi, if the day is Guihai—these are all cases where the year's heavenly stem and earthly branch conflict with the day's heavenly stem and earthly branch, and the day's ruler has no support, hence they are considered harmful. Other situations do not cause any problems.

General Discussion of Various Deities and Malevolent Forces

The ancient system of divine calamities has had one hundred and twenty names, but many of these explanations are speculative and fragmented. The natural transformations of heaven and earth are probably not like that. Among these, the most important ones such as Yangren (Sheath), Kongwang (Void), Jiesha (Obstruction), Zaisha (Calamity), Dasha (Great Sha), Yuanchen (Primordial Star), Goujiao (Restraining), Xianchi (Salt Pool), Pohuo (Fragment), Luowang (Net), Chongji (Impact), Tiankong (Sky), Xuanzhen (Suspended Needle), Pingtou (Flat Head), Daoge (Reversed Sword) have already been discussed earlier. Here, I will now explain the reasonable parts from various schools of star and destiny theories. "Self-suspension Calamity": This calamity is determined by the opposite elements in the Five Phases. For example, those born in the year of Xu (Dog) should see those born in the year of Si (Snake); those born in the year of Si (Snake) should see those born in the year of Xu (Dog); those born in the year of Chen (Tiger) should see those born in the year of Hai (Pig); those born in the year of Hai (Pig) should see those born in the year of Chen (Tiger); those born in the year of Yin (Tiger) should see those born in the year of Yin (Goat); those born in the year of Yin (Goat) should see those born in the year of Yin (Tiger); those born in the year of Mao (Rabbit) should see those born in the year of Shen (Monkey); those born in the year of Shen (Monkey) should see those born in the year of Mao (Rabbit); those born in the year of Wu (Horse) should see those born in the year of Chou (Ox); those born in the year of Chou (Ox) should see those born in the year of Wu (Horse); those born in the year of Zi (Rat) should see those born in the year of You (Rooster); those born in the year of You (Rooster) should see those born in the year of Zi (Rat). It is most dangerous if there is mutual control, and if the heavenly stem is seated in the tomb. If there are also Kongwang (Void), Guanfu (Official Symbol), and Dahao (Great Loss), it will certainly be a disaster. "Drowning in Water Calamity": This calamity is determined by those born on the days of Bingzi (Bing Zi), Guiwei (Gui Wei), and Guichou (Gui Chou), and also accompanied by Xianchi (Salt Pool), Jinren (Metal Blade), and Yangren (Sheath).

This is because the nayin sound element of Bingzi belongs to water, and zi is the strong position of water; wei is where the well mansion resides, and chou is the territory of the three rivers. If the nayin sound element again attacks the person, it is absolutely unavoidable. An old song says: if the moving evil spirit attacks the person, it is called falling down, and one must also beware of the white tiger, yangren, and others in the same position. One must know that hanging oneself is the most凶ous spirit; xu and si, chen and hai, and yin and wei are also凶ous; zi and you are similarly凶ous, as are mao and shen, chou and wei, following the same pattern. It is most忌 to have kongwang combined with the墓 ghost, and guanfu and da hao should also be avoided. Bingzi, guiwei, and guichou are most afraid of xianchi, gold evil spirits, and yangren. If the five phases again attack the person, one dies by hanging, and the other by drowning. "The hanging sword evil spirit": this evil spirit is taken when the four pillars have si, you, chou, and shen all present, or when they are repeated with si, you, and chou. If it also violates guanfu, yuanchen, baishi, and jin shen, and the five phases again attack the person, it indicates that the person is凶暴 and kills others, or is killed by others. A poem says: when si, you, chou, and shen have complete gold qi, it is called the hanging sword pattern; when yuanchen, wangshen, jin shen, and baishi all attack the person, even if they do not kill people, how can they protect themselves?

"The Heavenly Fire煞": This煞 arises when the three Fire branches (Yin, Wu, Xu) are all present, and the Heavenly Stems contain Bing or Ding, and there is no water in the five positions of year, month, day, hour, and the fetal position. If there is water, it does not count. If the stream year and big fortune period lead to a place where fire is strong and flourishing, one should beware of fire disasters. A poem says: When Yin, Wu, and Xu are all present, it is called Heavenly Fire; even without Bing and Ding, it is still acceptable; if there is no water in the five positions, then during a flourishing year, there will be fire disasters. The author's own birth chart has Yin, Wu, and Xu all present, and the monthly stem has Gui. When he was in the Wuwu period, Wu and Gui combined to form fire, and in the Jiaxu year and Jiaxu month, he suffered a fire disaster. "The Heavenly Execution煞": This煞 occurs in all pairs of times except when the day is Zi and the hour is Wu, or the day is Wu and the hour is Zi. Other combinations such as when the day is Chou and the hour is Hai, the day is Hai and the hour is Chou, the day is Yin and the hour is Xu, the day is Xu and the hour is Yin, the day is Mao and the hour is You, the day is You and the hour is Mao, the day is Chen and the hour is Shen, the day is Shen and the hour is Chen, the day is Si and the hour is Wei, the day is Wei and the hour is Si, are all counted in pairs. If a gentleman is afflicted by this, he may suffer from strange diseases such as hemorrhoids and foot qi; if a common person is afflicted, he may suffer from limb injuries.

Those who repeatedly offend it are subject to exile. "Heavenly Punishment" refers to a malevolent force. For those born in the years of Zi or Chou, it is active when they encounter Yi in their birth hour; for those born in the years of Yin or Mao, it is active when they encounter Geng in their birth hour; for those born in the years of Mao or Chen, it is active when they encounter Xin in their birth hour; for those born in the year of Si, it is active when they encounter Ren in their birth hour; for those born in the years of Wu or Wei, it is active when they encounter Gui in their birth hour; for those born in the year of Shen, it is active when they encounter Bing in their birth hour; for those born in the years of You or Xu, it is active when they encounter Ding in their birth hour; for those born in the year of Hai, it is active when they encounter Wu in their birth hour. These are all instances where the force acts upon the person's birth hour to harm their destiny. Those who offend it suffer punishment and illness. "Thunder and Lightning" refers to a malevolent force. In the first and seventh months, it is active at Zi; in the second and eighth months, at Yin; in the third and ninth months, at Mao; in the fourth and tenth months, at Wu; in the fifth and eleventh months, at Shen; in the sixth and twelfth months, at Xu. This force is associated with being struck by lightning or bitten by a tiger. Another interpretation says that in the first and seventh months, it is active at Zi; in the second and eighth months, at Yin; in the third and ninth months, at Mao; in the fourth and tenth months, at Wu; in the fifth and eleventh months, at Shen; in the sixth and twelfth months, at Xu. Starting from the first month at Zi, it proceeds through the six Yang positions in order. If a person's destiny encounters this force, and at the same time meets a fortunate position and a noble position, with auspicious stars above, it brings good fortune. Such people are likely to accumulate Yin Virtue, and may become judges who control thunder and lightning, perform符 (magic talismans), command water, or even attain enlightenment and become a Buddha or a sage. However, if this force is combined with Yangren, other malevolent forces, or Fei Lian, the person's fate will be extremely bad, leading to downfall, being struck by lightning, bitten by a tiger, divine punishment, plague, drowning, or death in prison.

The mnemonic for "Xian Sha" (陷煞) is: pigs, dogs, and sheep will be injured when encountering the tiger; monkeys and snakes will die hanging from trees when they meet; dogs meet chickens, mice suffer exile and punishment; rabbits chase snakes and must leave their homeland; mice meet dogs and will encounter evil affairs; horses and oxen meet tigers and will certainly fight each other. If people encounter this in the day or hour, they should carefully examine the Triple Harmony (三合) (original note: with the year branch as the main focus). "Guan Fu Sha" (官符煞): take the fifth position before the Tai Su (太岁), if encountered on the day or hour, one will have many legal troubles; if it appears together with Yang Ren (羊刃), it indicates a fate of being punished or imprisoned. If Guan Fu Sha falls on Tian Zhong (天中) (Kongwang), it often leads to falsehood and deception, also known as "Wang Yu Sha" (妄语煞). "Bing Fu Sha" (病符煞): take the position after Tai Su, those who encounter it will suffer from diseases, and the same applies if it occurs in the current year. "Si Fu Sha" (死符煞): take the position opposite to Bing Fu Sha; if the month, day, or hour encounters it without the protection of a noble spirit, it indicates great misfortune and a short life. "Sang Diao Sha" (丧吊煞), also called "Heng Guan Sha" (横关煞), takes the two positions before the birth year as Sang Men (丧门) and the two positions after as Diao Ke (吊客); if Tai Su and evil stars simultaneously appear in the big or small years, there will certainly be misfortune.

Ancient poetry says: the fifth palace governs official troubles, the sixth palace governs death, and the twelfth palace governs illness. The third palace is occupied by the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit, and the eleventh palace by the guest spirit, both coming together. This shows that the twelve palaces paired with the heavenly stem and earthly branch song do not only bring misfortune in one's fate, but even worse when encountered in the current year. If the month has the Yangren assisting, and malevolent spirits appear in the hour, it becomes the transverse evil spirit. Ancient songs say: the transverse evil spirit is rarely known, when the Lu Spirit of the month and malevolent spirits arrive at the same time; even if there are many auspicious stars shining over, one will still suffer misfortune or be in danger. "Residence and Grave Evil Spirit": the first five positions of the birth stem are disasters, and the last five are graves. One should fear that the residence and grave are attacked by the heavenly stem, Jiesha, and other evil spirits, which will affect the native's fate, causing suffering and illness. "Day Crime Spirit": starting from the birth day, count the Jiazi until the day's heavenly stem. For yang stems, count forward; for yin stems, count backward. If it falls in the native's palace, it indicates severe punishment. If it falls in the triple harmony, it indicates exile or punishment. If it falls in the opposite palace, it indicates death of a guest outside. "Blood Flow Spirit": starting from the birth month, count from Zi in a forward direction until the birth year. If it falls in the native's palace, the triple harmony, or the opposite palace, it indicates the occurrence of boils and sores. For common people, it indicates exile or punishment. For women, it indicates difficulties in childbirth.

The "Sword Sharpness Harm" is as follows: In the Jiazi decade, the sword is in Chen and the sharpness is in Xu; in the Jiawu decade, the sword is in Xu and the sharpness is in Chen; in the Jiayin decade, the sword is in Wu and the sharpness is in Shen; in the Jiashen decade, the sword is in Zi and the sharpness is in Yin; in the Jiachen decade, the sword is in Shen and the sharpness is in Wu; in the Jiaxu decade, the sword is in Yin and the sharpness is in Zi. Depending on which palace it falls into, if it appears in the fifth palace (children palace), it harms children; if it appears in the fourth palace (property palace), it harms property and housing. The "Lance Sharpness Harm" begins with Jia in the first month, Yi in the second, Wu in the third, Bing in the fourth, Ding in the fifth, Ji in the sixth, Geng in the seventh, Xin in the eighth, Wu in the ninth, Ren in the tenth, Gui in the eleventh, and Ji in the twelfth. These are the heavenly stems that are dominant each month. If both the day and hour carry two instances of this harm, and it meets the "suspended needle" harm, it indicates a sentence of exile or bodily injury. The "Floating and Submerged Harm" starts from Xu and counts backward to the position of the person's birth year. Then from the year palace, count forward to determine which palace it falls into. If it falls into the wealth palace, it is called "string of coins," indicating accumulation of wealth. If it falls into any other palace, it is harmful. Those born in the years of Jia, Yi, Ji, Geng, and Ren are affected slightly, while those born in the years of Bing, Ding, Wu, Xin, and Gui are affected more severely.

In the years of寅, 午, 申, and 未, this evil spirit often causes water-related calamities; additionally, the specific disaster should be determined by the palace where it falls. For example, if it falls in the field palace, it indicates the destruction of ancestral property; other palaces should be analyzed similarly. "Broken Evil Spirit": This evil spirit is broken between卯 and 午, 丑 and 辰, 子 and 酉, 未 and 戌; however, 寅 and 申, 巳 and 亥 are naturally broken but also form a triple harmony, so they are not considered. Those who commit this evil spirit often face many troubles in their youth, financial loss, and injuries. "Return Origin Evil Spirit": When the five elements lack noble energy, and the lower part overcomes the upper part, it is called return. The song says: when the five elements are in death or decline and all arrive together, even if there is a pattern, it is like a useless decoration, and good fortune will not follow; it is especially bad if the day or hour overcomes the year's main element, which definitely means no official or noble status. For example, someone with a Jiazi metal destiny who has a Wuwu day, and their birth month, day, and hour also carry 寅 and 巳, committing this evil spirit will definitely be isolated and without support; whether rich or noble, once they become strong, they will overcome their parents and elders. "Yin and Yang Evil Spirit": Women belong to yin and prefer yang; a destiny with a strong fire like Wuwu is considered proper yang.

Men belong to yang and prefer yin, so if their destiny includes strong water like Bingzi, it is a proper yin. This represents harmony between yin and yang, so men with Bingzi in their destiny often have many beautiful wives throughout their lives; women with Wuwu in their destiny often meet many handsome men. If this appears in the day pillar, men will marry beautiful wives and women will marry handsome husbands. The most dangerous situation is when it is combined with Yuanchen or Xianchi in the same palace, which leads to promiscuity regardless of gender. For example, men with Wuwu often attract many women's affection and admiration; women with Bingzi often encounter many men's advances. It is also necessary to consider the level of fortune in the destiny. "Desire Obstruction Maleficent Star": The "Hu Zhongzi" says: In old age, one becomes drunk in the twelve layers of Qin Lou, because one has repeatedly committed Bazhuan; in youth, one dies in a distant place of eight thousand li in Chu, because one has repeatedly encountered Jiuchou. This means that Bazhuan is a maleficent star of desire, and Jiuchou is a harmful hour. Bazhuan refers to eight days: Jiayin, Yimao, Jiwei, Dingwei, Gengshen, Xinyou, Wuxu, and Guichou. If these appear in the day pillar, they indicate an improper wife; if they appear in the hour pillar, they indicate an improper son.

A woman who commits the "Eight Special" (八专) is indiscriminate in her dealings with others; those who commit it more severely face greater consequences. The "Nine Chou" (九丑) refers to the days of Bingzi, Renwu, Wuzi, Wuwu, Jiyou, Jimao, Yimao, Xinyou, and Xinmao. If a woman commits this, she is prone to difficulties in childbirth; if a man commits it, he will encounter many troubles and may not have a good end. The "Solitary Crane and Lonely Quail" (孤鸾寡鹊煞) is described in ancient verses: those with wood or fire destiny who meet the snake (巳) are greatly inauspicious, those with metal destiny meeting the pig (亥) are unnecessary to be stubborn; those with earth destiny meeting the monkey (申), and those with wood destiny meeting the tiger (寅), where is the husband? They can only dance alone with the solitary crane. This refers to the days of Yisi, Dingsi, Xinhai, Wu Shen, Jiayin, as well as Bingwu, Wuwu, Renzi, and others. For men, it causes harm to their wives; for women, it causes harm to their husbands. The "Yin and Yang Error" (阴阳差错煞) refers to the twelve days of Bingzi, Dingchou, Wuyin, Xinmao, Renchen, Guisi, Bingwu, Dingwei, Wushen, Xinyou, Renxu, and Guihai. If a woman encounters these days, she will have conflicts with her in-laws and lack harmony with her sisters-in-law, leading to the gradual decline of her husband's family. If a man encounters these days, he will be distant from his mother-in-law's family and have continuous disputes with his wife's relatives, making it difficult to get along with them.

This煞 affects both men and women. If it appears twice or thrice in the month, day, or hour columns, it is extremely severe. Even if it appears only in the day pillar, it is still serious, indicating a lack of support from the wife's family. Even if there is property from the wife's family, it will be of no real value. Over time, it may lead to enmity with the wife's family and a complete cut-off of relations. When the officialdom position meets the jiesha, it is called the taohua煞, indicating a tendency towards indulgence in alcohol and women. When the reverse position meets the xiaoshen, it is called the short life煞, indicating harm to the wife. The taohua hongyan煞: when the wood triad (Hai-Mao-Wei) is in the Zi position, the metal triad (Si-You-Chou) is in the Wu position, the fire triad (Yin-Wu-Xu) is in the Mao position, and the water triad (Shen-Zi-Chen) is in the You position, it is called the taohua煞. For the hongyan煞: on Jia and Yi days, if the Wu position is present; on Bing day, if the Yin position is present; on Ding day, if the Wei position is present; on Wu day, if the Zi position is present; on Ji day, if the Chen position is present; on Geng day, if the Xu position is present; on Xin day, if the You position is present; on Ren day, if the Si position is present; and on Gui day, if the Shen position is present, it is called the hongyan煞, which is especially disliked for women. In all these cases, when it is said that the煞 'kills the body', it refers to the nayin sound element of the凶煞 killing the nayin sound element of the birth year. The phrase 'the nayin sound element of the current year is on the body' means that the凶煞 is accompanied by the nayin sound element of the current year and falls on the body's position. If the nayin sound element of the current year is considered as the body, and if the body is being killed and also falls on the dead, failed, or absolute positions, it will result in unexpected disasters. If the body is only being killed in a position where it has some strength, the disaster is still serious, but if it is also accompanied by the dead, failed, or absolute positions, the disaster is less severe.

Only when the nayin sound element of the year of birth is reversed and controls the person's destiny is it considered auspicious. If a person's destiny has already entered a noble pattern, and in critical positions there is a sharp element, yet there is assistance from a benevolent deity, then the sharp element becomes a source of power; but if there is no assistance from a benevolent deity, and the sharp element is strong, then the sharp element and the person's destiny interact with each other, possibly causing harm to the person's main destiny, leading to a lowly and violent death. It is also said that wherever a benevolent deity resides, one hopes for its strength and vitality, for strength and vitality bring honor and wealth; wherever a malevolent deity resides, one hopes for its decline and weakness, for decline and weakness allow for a peaceful end. It is also said that benevolent deities should be allowed to thrive, and one should avoid anything that weakens them; malevolent deities should be allowed to decline, and one should avoid anything that strengthens them. It is also said that when there are mutual conflicts, breaks, triple harmonies, or six harmonies in a person's destiny, one should examine how the five elements interact: sometimes misfortune brings fortune, and sometimes fortune brings misfortune. For example, if something is dead and then revives, or if something is empty and then is broken, or if mutual control turns into mutual support, this is fortune emerging from misfortune; conversely, this is misfortune emerging from fortune. The "Book of Destiny" says: can a lowly official on the road not have a post-horse to ride? Can a gambler in the market not have the three marvels surrounded by nobility?

Zi Ping said: In the patterns of noble men, there may also be the presence of the Seven Stars and the Yang Blade; in the fate of common people, there may also be the presence of the Proper Seal and the Official Star. From this we can see that auspicious deities and malevolent influences should not be viewed rigidly; the balance of importance lies entirely in understanding change and adaptability. Generally, in the position of a malevolent influence, that deity should not also carry a true ghost; once it injures itself, even if the Official Star appears, it would still turn into a ghost, let alone if it is already a true ghost, which clearly brings disaster.
