Charting guides: BaZi Chart Calculator

The concept of "Jian Lu" refers to a day master born in the month of寅 for Jia wood or in the month of卯 for Yi wood, where the month is the official position of the Five Phases. However, Jia wood takes metal as its official, but metal is in its dead state in寅; it also takes earth as its wealth, but earth is in its sick state in寅. The day master is too strong, thus unable to obtain both wealth and official positions. If there are no other wealth or official elements available, and if there is a conflict with the劫财 (robber wealth), then the horse cannot support and the禄 (wealth) cannot be nourished, often leading to a poor and lowly life. Such a fate is more suitable if there is a partial official or partial wealth or food god in the hour, and then one should look at what is revealed in the year and hour to determine the useful elements. If only a slight presence of wealth or official is seen, it may cause competition and is not auspicious.

If the month's stem in the birth chart is a built-in fortune (建禄), it is difficult to sustain ancestral wealth, and one will often see wealth but not be able to hold onto it; however, they may have few illnesses and a long life. If the fortune is further supported by a peer (比肩) in the big run (行运), it may lead to harming the wife, troubling the father, damaging the children, or causing legal troubles and financial loss, or conflicts over money with wife and children. If the original birth chart already has wealth and official positions (财官), and these are brought to a strong position, each getting their due, with the official star (官星) receiving support, then when the big run reaches a place where the official star is strong, one can achieve high status; if the wealth star (财星) receives support, and the big run reaches a place where wealth is strong, one can become wealthy; if both wealth and official positions are strong, then it is a fate of wealth and honor. If there is a wealth repository (财库) at the hour position, and the big run reaches the wealth area (财乡), it will certainly lead to great wealth in old age. If the wealth and official positions at the year position are supported, one will surely benefit from ancestral blessings. If the four pillars originally lack wealth and official positions, even if the big run reaches the wealth and official positions, it will only be a fleeting illusion. If the birth chart already lacks wealth and official positions, and the big run also encounters peers (比肩), then one will live a life of poverty and obstacles.

The essay says: The root grows before the sprout, and the fruit comes after the flower. This means that the root comes first, then the sprout, and the flower comes first, then the fruit. If the person's birth year does not contain wealth or official positions, even if they meet good fortune related to wealth and official positions later, their success will not be great. For example, if the day stem is Jia Wood and the month is寅 (Yin), and the four pillars contain many characters like Yi Wood, Mao (Rabbit), and Wei (Earth Pig), it indicates no ancestral wealth, marital problems, a life of poverty, and dishonest behavior, yet they appear to be very confident. If the day stem is Yi Wood and the month is Mao (Rabbit), and the four pillars contain many characters like Geng Metal, Xin Metal, Si (Snake), You (Rooster), Xu (Dog), Shen (Monkey), or Wu Earth, Fu Earth, Si (Snake), Wu (Horse), Chen (Dragon), Xu (Dog), and Xu (Dog), then having many wealth and official positions indicates high status. If the four pillars contain water characters like Ren Water, Gui Water, Shen (Monkey), Zi (Rat), Chen (Dragon), Hai (Pig), forming a water pattern, it is also good. If they meet such a pattern in their destiny, it is even better. If the four pillars do not contain wealth, official positions, seal, or food, then judge according to the previous statements.

For a person born on Bing fire day with the birth month being Si, if the heavenly stems and earthly branches in the year and hour form a water trinity or a metal trinity, and the person experiences a fortune in the wealth and official positions, they will achieve wealth and honor. For a person born on Ding fire day with the birth month being Wu, metal is in decline and water is in extinction, so both wealth and official positions are absent. If the person goes through the fortune in the order of the trigrams, they will lose one wife; if they go through the fortune in the reverse order, they will lose three wives. If the four pillars contain Si, You, Chou, Geng, Xin, as well as Ren, Gui, Hai, Shen, Zi, Chen, and the person experiences a fortune in the wealth and official positions, they can also achieve success. For those using seven evils or using the seal trigram, the more they have, the better. If it is merely a built-up fortune, then it should be judged according to the previous explanation.

The day master is Wu Earth born in the month of Si. If there is no water in the year, day, or hour columns, it indicates a lack of spouse, no ancestral property, and many sons who do not become accomplished. If there are many official stars in the four pillars, it is favorable. If there is a biased official, it indicates great dignity and status. If there is a lot of fire in the year and month or if there is a seal star, even without wealth and official positions, it is still favorable. If there is either visible or hidden壬 or癸 water, along with亥,申, 子, or 辰 to form a water trinity, there will be one or two sons in old age. If there is甲, 寅, 乙, 卯, 亥, or 未 to form a wood trinity, and the fortune reaches a prosperous period of wealth and official positions, success can be achieved. The day master is Ji Earth born in the month of Wu. The water is considered wealth, but in May, water is in a state of confinement, indicating no ancestral property, a lack of spouse, and few children. If the year or hour column reveals 寅 and 甲 as the official star, it is unfortunate because in May, 甲 wood is dead, leading to a low position. At this time, it is favorable to see 亥, 卯, 未, and 乙 to generate and support the wood energy. When the day master is strong and encounters official stars or harmful stars, it is excellent. Seeing biased wealth is also favorable.

The day master is Geng metal born in the month of Shen. If born in the first ten days, it is still close to the residual energy of wood, and there is almost no inherited wealth from ancestors. Although the solar term has arrived at the place where water is exhausted, there is still about three or four parts of stored wealth in the treasury, which can bring good fortune. When the big fortune reaches Bingxu, this wealth will be exhausted. If the year, day, and hour columns contain many wealth elements, it is considered a good fate. If there are Jia, Yi, Si, Wu, Yin, and Xu, forming a fire formation, there will be official positions. This is transforming the seven deadly enemies into officials, but the official position is small and not noble or prominent. It is feared that if there are Ren, Gui, Zi, or Hai, they will overcome the official position, making it impossible to hold an official post. The day master is Xinh metal born in the month of You. There is no inherited wealth from ancestors, and the four pillars contain many competing elements, leading to poverty, lack of a wife, or even harming the wife without wealth. If there is strong wood and fire, it will lead to wealth and honor. If there is originally no wealth or official position, and the big fortune moves to the birthplace of metal, the disaster of competition and taking away will be especially severe. If there is Xinyou, it is called 'special fortune', and if there are wealth, official positions, seals, and food elements, it is even better. If the big fortune moves southward in reverse, it is auspicious, but if it moves northward in the normal direction, nothing will be accomplished. If the day is Xinhmao or Xinhui, the self is sitting on wealth, which may bring clothing and food; if the day is Xinsi, there is noble quality, but the official position is also light. The day master is Ren water born in the month of Hai, or Gui water born in the month of Zi, there is no inherited property. If the four pillars contain many fire and earth elements, it indicates self-reliance in establishing a family and holding an official position. If there is too much water and it is overflowing, it will result in nothing accomplished, harming the wife, and poverty.

It is also said that for a day master of Jia wood born in the寅 month, the best hour is Renshen; for a day master of Yi wood born in the卯 month, the best hour is Xinsi; for a day master of Bing fire born in the巳 month, the best hour is Jihai; for a day master of Ding fire born in the午 month, the best hour is Gengzi; for a day master of Wu earth born in the巳 month, the best hour is Jiayin; for a day master of Ji earth born in the午 month, the best hour is Yichou; for a day master of Geng metal born in the申 month, the best hour is Bingxu; for a day master of Xin metal born in the酉 month, the best hour is Dingyou; for a day master of Ren water born in the亥 month, the best hour is Wushen; for a day master of Gui water born in the子 month, the best hour is Jiwei. All of these use the seven deadly stars to achieve status, but the deadly stars should not be too many. If the flow year and big luck year also meet the deadly star positions, it may lead to an early death.

For example, if someone dies in the year of Renshen, it is because the year and the big destiny period clash and form a combination of the injurious official and the seven harmful stars. This person originally had the pattern of built-up official position, using wealth and official position as their fortune. The injurious official star removes the丙 fire, leading to an early death. The "Dibu" says: if the month's stem is built-up official position, it is usually without ancestral property, but once wealth and official position appear, it naturally brings good fortune. It also says: if the built-up official position is in the month's stem, wealth and official position are most favorable when they appear in the heavenly stem; the day's main stem should not be too strong, but rather the source of wealth should be abundant. The "Mingtong Fu" says: regardless of whether it is built-up, seated, or residing in the official position, as long as it meets wealth, official position, and the seal star alone, it can bring wealth and honor and enjoy a long life.

Taking into account the various interpretations from different schools, it is clear that the study of Zi Ping focuses on the "Jian Lu" (established luck), which differs greatly from the ancient approach to "Lu" (luck). I believe that although terms such as Yang Ren (Yang Blade), Bi Chuan (same zhi), Bai Cai (ruined wealth), and Jian Lu are different, they actually belong to the same category and share the same energy. In the earthly branches, they are called "Ren" (blade) or "Lu" (luck); in the heavenly stems, they are called "Bi" (same) or "Jie" (seize). Their methods of selection are generally similar. Therefore, I explain "Jian Lu" after "Yang Ren." Originally, "Jian Lu" was not considered a standard pattern, but recently some people have used the monthly branch to determine it. In reality, there is nothing special about "Jian Lu" as a pattern. It is only when there is wealth, official position, or noble status in the heavenly stem that "Jian Lu" is treated like Bi Chuan or Jie Cai. Here, I simply clarify the underlying principle.

Volume Seven

On the nature, disposition, and appearance.

A person's status depends on their birth chart, while their temperament is reflected in the Five Phases. Benevolence, virtue, propriety, righteousness, wisdom, and faith are governed by the heart; while joy, anger, sorrow, joy, love, hate, and desire arise from the nature. The eastern position, Zhen, belongs to wood and is known as the Azure Dragon. Its pattern is called "curved and straight," and in the Five Constants it represents benevolence. Its color is green, its taste is sour, its nature is upright, and its demeanor is harmonious. When wood is prosperous and strong, the person is full of universal love and compassion, kind and joyful, able to help others and care for the lonely and the poor. He is straightforward and noble, generous in his actions, with a graceful appearance, a tall and slender frame, delicate hands and feet, a sharp mouth, beautiful hair, a pale and bluish complexion, and a commanding voice. This is the reason why the wood element is strong and full of benevolence. If wood is weak and confined, the person will have a thin and tall body with sparse hair, a stubborn and biased nature, and be jealous and unkind. This is the reason why the wood element is weak and the emotions are shallow. When wood reaches its death and decline, the person will have uneven eyebrows and eyes, be stingy and vulgar, have dry skin, a long neck and prominent Adam's apple, be unsteady in movement and sitting, and often lean to one side. If it meets fire, the skin will have a reddish hue; if it meets earth, the skin will be yellow; if it meets metal, the skin will be white; if it meets water, the skin will be black. The other four elements are viewed in the same way.

Fire belongs to the south, and its characteristic is called "Inflaming Ascending." In the Five Constants, it governs propriety. Its color is red, its taste is bitter, its nature is impetuous, and its demeanor is respectful. When fire is prosperous and strong, a person exhibits a dignified and respectful manner, a humble and harmonious character, and an imposing presence. He is simple and respected by others. His face is narrow at the top and broad at the bottom, his body is small-headed and long-legged, his forehead is narrow and his eyebrows are thick, his nose is prominent and his ears are small. His eyes shine brightly, and his speech is rapid. Though his nature is impetuous, he is not malicious. He is intelligent and capable. If fire is excessive, his voice becomes hoarse, his face is red, he shakes his legs while sitting, and he is restless and always in motion. If fire is deficient, his face is yellow and his body is thin and sharp-featured. He is deceitful and jealous, his speech is absurd, and his actions are incomplete and lack perseverance.

Earth belongs to the center, and its category is called "Jia Se" (cultivation and harvest). Among the five constants, it represents trust. Its color is yellow, its taste is sweet, its nature is steady, and its disposition is sincere and upright. When earth is prosperous and strong, a person's words and deeds are consistent, loyal and filial, sincere and devoted to deities, and never breaks promises or deceives others. Such a person has a round back, broad waist, large nose, square mouth, clear eyebrows, bright eyes, a full face, and a yellow complexion. They are broad-minded, have a good way of handling affairs. However, if earth is excessive, it becomes stubborn and inflexible, dull and unable to understand things. If earth is insufficient, the person appears gloomy and blocked in expression, has a crooked face, a low and flat nose bridge, a heavy and muffled voice, is confused about matters, cruel and capricious, lacks the favor of others, is inconsistent and untrustworthy, and is both stingy and reckless.

Metal is located to the west, and its name in the Five Constants is "From Reform." Its color is white, its taste is pungent, and its nature is strong and firm. When metal is prosperous and strong, it signifies a person who is brave and heroic, loyal and generous, knows right from wrong, and has a sense of shame. The body is well-proportioned, strong and vigorous, with a square and clean face, high eyebrows, deep eyes, a straight nose, red ears, a clear voice, and a resolute and decisive character. If metal is excessive, it leads to rashness without strategy, greed without compassion. If metal is insufficient, it results in stinginess and cruelty, frequent setbacks and forgetfulness, excessive thinking with little decision-making, harshness and inner malice, a tendency towards lust and violence, and a thin and small physique.

Water belongs to the north and its character is called "Runxia" (flowing down). In the Five Phases, it represents wisdom. Its color is black, its taste is salty, its nature is intelligent, and its disposition is benevolent. When water is prosperous and strong, it indicates deep thinking, great wisdom, and exceptional learning, but when it becomes deceitful, it has no limits. Its complexion is dark but bright, and its speech is clear and calm. If water is excessive, it tends to cause trouble, be restless, and be wandering and lustful. If water is insufficient, the person is short in stature, their actions are inconsistent, their temperament is unstable, and they are timid without strategy. Although these are merely analogies based on the Five Phases, they are actually related to human affairs. The Five Phases and temperament should also be considered in conjunction with auspicious and inauspicious heavenly stems and earthly branches. Generally, those with strong and flourishing phases are tall, while those with dead or exhausted phases are short. However, if malevolent stars are present, this does not apply, and the judgment should be based on the malevolent stars instead. If there is a controlling relationship, the judgment should be based on the element being controlled. In addition, one should consider the day and hour, as well as the Nayin sound element, to determine if there is a controlling relationship, and also examine whether the location of the heavenly stems and earthly branches has energy or not, in order to judge appearance and temperament. There is no case that does not correspond.

It is also said that to determine a person's nature and behavior, one should look at the day pillar and the hour pillar, focusing on the inherent Five Phases rather than the Nayin sound element. If a person's destiny conforms to a good pattern and encounters a favorable and vigorous phase, they will have a naturally bright and intelligent disposition, behave properly in dealing with others, and be able to seize opportunities promptly. Their speech will be loud and clear, their words direct and straightforward, and their demeanor broad-minded. When facing matters, they can make decisions swiftly, remain fair and free from suspicion, and not be afraid of difficulties. They will not be stingy with their possessions, be generous and not selfish. Their lifestyle will be luxurious and joyful, they will be sentimental and value righteousness highly. However, they should be cautious of hidden dangers that may lead to an untimely death.

If a person's destiny falls into a noble pattern but encounters death or decline, their nature will be unsociable, with deep thoughts and meticulous considerations. They will be suspicious and jealous, strictly observe etiquette, be cautious about their actions, pay attention to appearance and grooming, often restrain themselves, and not act easily. Such people should beware of hidden dangers and schemes. If a person's destiny is already in a lowly pattern but encounters prosperity and vitality, their nature will be fickle and lack self-restraint. They will disregard danger, enjoy quarrels, bully the weak, associate with wicked people, neglect family affairs, and ultimately meet a bad end. If they fall into death or decline, their nature will be licentious and deceitful, with every action being artificial and insincere. They will be timid yet stubborn, deliberately display refined manners, speak only flattering words, and love to boast. In matters, they lack decisiveness, always see the bad side, and can never establish themselves in life.

The "Zaigong Yajue" says: Aspiration is lofty and capacity is far-reaching because water is in a deep source; sincerity and trustworthiness with benevolence are due to earth forming mountains; kindness, agility, and sincerity are because wood is matured in the east of Jia and Yi; quickness and clarity of judgment are because fire is in the position of Bing and Ding; high reputation and strong sense of righteousness are because metal is in the position of Geng and Xin. Those who conform to these have upright and unchanging nature; once they become excessive or deficient, their temperament changes accordingly. Water in decline becomes murky and unreliable; earth too weak becomes dull and stubborn with little use; wood in a stagnant place becomes too soft and lacks order in affairs; fire not yet rising tends to engage in petty disputes, is easily hurt, and lacks decisiveness; metal in a shallow state, though loyal, lacks perseverance. Thus, the Five Phases, whether they are in favorable or unfavorable positions, excessive or insufficient, can all lead to misfortune. The "Huzhongzi" says: Those who speak cunningly are born at a time when "Liuxu" occurs; "Liuxu" is where the gods of lying reside. If a person possesses this, he will love fabricating and embellishing, and falsehoods will constantly arise; those who meet such people are sure to be cunning, causing harm to elders and relatives throughout their lives, drifting away from home and country, and often making empty show of their actions.

On Knowing the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches Associated with the Five Zang and Six Fu Organs

If one uses this method to diagnose diseases, even Qi Bi and Lei Gong would spread it. Another song says: Wu is the head, Si and Wei divide into the two shoulders; the left and right arms are Chen and Shen; Mao and You correspond to the two flanks, Yin and Xu to the two legs; Chou and Hai belong to the feet, Zi to the lower genitalia. Another song says: The Qian trigram represents the head, the Kun trigram the abdomen, the Kan trigram the ears; the Zhen trigram the feet, the Xun trigram the thighs, the Gen trigram the hands; the Dui trigram the mouth, the Li trigram the eyes, each of the eight trigrams has its own corresponding part; all disease diagnosis is based on this.

Diseases arise from the disharmony of the Five Phases, which corresponds to the disharmony of the five internal organs in the human body. The Five Phases are connected to the five internal organs, and the six腑 are connected to the nine orifices. Among the ten heavenly stems, diseases affecting the heavenly stems belong to the six腑, while diseases affecting the twelve earthly branches belong to the five internal organs. The stems 丙 and 丁, together with the branches 巳 and 午, form a fire pattern, located in the south, associated with the trigram 离 (Fire), and the disease affects the upper part of the body. The stems 壬 and 癸, together with the branches 亥 and 子, form a water pattern, located in the north, associated with the trigram 坎 (Water), and the disease affects the lower part of the body. The stems 甲 and 乙, together with the branches 寅 and 卯, belong to the trigram 震 (Thunder), and the disease affects the left side of the body. The stems 庚 and 辛, together with the branches 申 and 酉, belong to the trigram 兑 (Lake), and the disease affects the right side of the body. The stems 戊 and 己, together with the branches 辰, 戌, 丑, and 未, belong to the trigrams 坤 (Earth) and 艮 (Mountain), and the disease affects the spleen, stomach, and middle energizer.

In women, it may cause excessive blood loss and irregular menstrual flow. In children, it may result in measles, rashes, scabies, and a red face. For a day master of Wu and Ji earth, if there is an excess of Jia and Yi wood in the chart, internally it may cause poor spleen and stomach function, regurgitation, difficulty in swallowing, edema, diarrhea, jaundice, picky eating, and vomiting. Externally it may lead to heaviness in the right hand, damp toxins spreading, and fullness and blockage in the chest and abdomen. In women, it may cause loss of appetite, sour regurgitation, body weakness, frequent yawning and drowsiness. In children, it may result in five疳 and five softness syndromes, internal heat, excessive sleepiness, and a pale yellow complexion.

For a day master of metal (庚 or 辛), if there is excessive fire (丙 or 丁) and Dingsi (丁巳) or Wu (午) in the chart, internally it may cause intestinal wind, hemorrhoids, bleeding after defecation, phlegm-fire cough, shortness of breath and hemoptysis, mental confusion and loss of soul, and symptoms of mental restlessness and physical exhaustion. Externally, it may lead to dry skin, lung wind with redness of the nose, abscesses and swellings on the back, discharge of pus and blood with weakness in the body. For women, it may cause phlegm cough and postpartum blood disorders. For children, it may result in pus and blood, dysentery, and a yellowish or pale complexion. For a day master of water (壬 or 癸), if there is excessive earth (戊 or 己) and the earth branches of Chen (辰), Xu (戌), Chou (丑), or Wei (未) in the chart, internally it may cause seminal emission and night sweats, dreams of intercourse with ghosts, blood stasis and physical exhaustion, chills, teeth grinding, deafness, blindness, and colds. Externally, it may lead to toothache caused by wind and insect pests, hernia, lower back pain, knee pain, difficulty in urination, vomiting and diarrhea, and fear of cold. For women, it may cause leukorrhea, ghost pregnancy, and irregular menstruation. For children, it may result in sores in the ears, pain in the small intestine, restlessness at night, and a dark complexion.

The text says: muscle and bone pain is mostly due to wood being harmed by metal; eye dimness is certainly caused by fire being controlled by water; when earth is weak and one travels to a place where wood is strong, it can be concluded that the spleen is injured; when metal is weak and one encounters a place with intense fire, suffering from blood disorders is certain. It also says: when wood meets metal control, there will be disaster in the waist and ribs; when fire is harmed by water, there will be eye diseases; heart and lung fullness also relates to the conflict between metal and fire; damage to the spleen and stomach is mostly due to the struggle and control between earth and water. When the earthly branches belong to water and the heavenly stem encounters fire, there will be stomach ailments and mental confusion; when the earthly branches belong to fire and the heavenly stem encounters water, internal cataracts and even loss of sight may occur. Fiery fire causing restlessness and scorching the earth star leads to baldness and eye strain; moist water with no earth to control it leads to kidney deficiency and deafness. The fire planet,荧惑, when strong and located at the positions of 离 and 巽, indicates stroke and loss of voice; the metal planet,太白, when sharp and combined with the positions of 兑 and 坤, indicates being in a state of despair before military disaster. It also says: when the heart is diseased, the mouth cannot speak; when the liver is diseased, the eyes cannot see; when the spleen is diseased, the mouth cannot eat; when the lung is diseased, the nose cannot smell; when the kidney is diseased, the ears cannot hear; each follows its own function, and this can be used to verify the presence or absence of the condition.

Alas! Human diseases are numerous and complex, yet their underlying principle is one. Observation, inquiry, listening, and palpation are the refined methods of physicians; while generation, overcoming, controlling, and transformation are the profound principles of diviners. If one can thoroughly investigate the root and the manifestation, they all depend on this method. It is said that health arises from the harmonious interaction of the Five Phases, while illness originates from punishments, clashes, and overcoming. To examine the decline and strength of the Five Phases, and to carefully distinguish the internal and external aspects of various diseases: internally, they affect the five internal organs; externally, they relate to the limbs. For example, if the wood element is weak and confined, the hair on the temples becomes sparse and fails to grow; if the fire element reaches its dead end, the eyes become dim and lack luster. Fire contains earth but lacks water to control it, leading to mental confusion; wood contains metal but lacks water to restrain it, resulting in injuries to the legs and feet. If Jia and Yi (wood) are born in the west, at the Gate of Joy (Dui), and also meet Ren and Gui (water), they often die from excessive drinking; if Bing and Ding (fire) are nurtured in the north, at the Water (Kan), and also meet Geng and Xin (metal), they often drown in ditches. If water is excessive and wood floats, it often causes diarrhea and dysentery; if earth is too strong and metal is buried, it frequently leads to upward qi stagnation. Various wind diseases causing dizziness and vertigo are due to excessive wood and weak metal; pain, itching, and sores are caused by excessive fire and weak water; blockage and swelling result from excessive earth; depression leading to weakness and paralysis is due to insufficient metal.

The heavenly stems Jia and Yi, which belong to wood, can injure the earthly stems Wu and Ji, which belong to earth; if earth has no remedy, it leads to a cleft lip. The heavenly stems Bing and Ding, which belong to fire, are good at overcoming the heavenly stems Geng and Xin, which belong to metal; if metal is not restrained, it leads to speechlessness. If fire contains earth, there will be swollen lumps on the neck; if water contains earth, there will be swelling and distension in the abdomen. If the useful god is both restrained and subjected to punishment and clash, one will die from a beating. If both the upper and lower parts meet malevolent stars and evil spirits without any remedy, one will commit suicide by hanging. If the four pillars have repeated clashes and many ominous signs, one is likely to die in a foreign land. If the five phases are weak and insufficient, one is likely to die from an epidemic. If water is destroyed and exhausted, one will have a hunched back; the medical methods of Xuanyuan and Qibo will not be effective. If metal is subjected to punishment, one's back will be bent like a tortoise; the medical formulas of Bianque and Lu Yi will be of no use.

Heavenly Stems of Geng and Xin represent clear and refined metal energy. If they appear in the Western direction and are further attacked by wood, the person is likely to die from injuries or warfare. If Heavenly Stems of Jia and Yi are already in decline and there is no water coming from the Earthly Branches of Kun or the South, then family members will be separated. When Xinsi and Bingshen meet, there is a conflict, leading to weak arms and six fingers. When Jimao and Wuyin are in opposition, the stomach is weak and the person often suffers from sores and abscesses. When Yiwei and Jiawu meet with metal, the person is likely to have a turtle-like forehead. When Guimao and Jichou conflict, the illness affects the waist and knees. Those with Jiashen and Yiyou as their destiny are prone to liver diseases in childhood. Those with Xinmao and Gengyin as their destiny suffer from physical strain and joint problems in old age. When the fire element is strong and upward, men often suffer from physical and mental damage. When the fire element is weak and damp, women often suffer from tuberculosis and postpartum blood disorders. If both the day and hour pillars are weak, serious illness is hard to cure. If there is conflict or harm between the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, even minor illness is difficult to recover from. When the energies are harmonious, the person is peaceful. When the energies are conflicting, disaster occurs. Illness is related to the six pulse patterns, and life and death are determined by the Five Phases. By carefully examining the rise and fall, there is no error.

An old song says: When the Day Stem is Wu or Ji (Earth), the vital energy at birth is incomplete. If both the month and the hour also show the official of injury, then there will certainly be loss on the face, and in youth, one will suffer from boils and sores. Another song says: When the Day Stem is Bing or Ding (Fire), and the Five Phases are weak, with the seven deadly stars present and the Triple Harmony also appearing, one will be constantly busy for food and clothing yet still lack, and also suffer from deafness, disability, and a weathered face. Another song says: When Ren and Gui (Water) are repeated in the fate, and if the hour also shows heavenly wealth, even if there are no scars or sores on the face, there will certainly be eye troubles. It is also said: A person's birth first receives the vital energy from the father, and then takes shape from the mother. If the five internal organs are in harmony, there will be no illness. If the Five Phases clash and attack each other, being either excessive or deficient, then illness will occur.

The Inner Canon says: When the east is excessive and the west is deficient, one should drain the south and replenish the north. The excessive east refers to wood being overabundant; the deficient west refers to metal being insufficient. Draining the south is because fire is excessive; replenishing the north is because water is insufficient. This shows that both excess and deficiency in the five phases can lead to illness. If water rises and fire descends, then fire decreases and metal becomes clear and sharp, metal clears and wood becomes harmonious, wood harmonizes and earth is not harmed, so each of the five viscera receives balanced qi, from where could illness arise? The Book of Yin and Yang says: When metal is strong and fire is vigorous, they will mutually harm each other in their own element; when wood drops its leaves and returns to its origin, water flows toward the east. Therefore, the three punishments should be discussed: punishment means harm, referring to excess causing illness in the body. If only deficiency is used to discuss illness, it will certainly lead to biased judgment.

When the Five Phases fall into the "dead and extinct" positions and cause illness, each has its specific manifestations. Water in dead and extinct positions often leads to kidney qi deficiency, lower back and leg pain, loose bowels, and difficulties in urination and defecation, because water corresponds to the kidney, which governs the lower back and legs and controls urination and defecation. Fire in dead and extinct positions mainly causes intestinal blockage, heart palpitations, forgetfulness, and mental restlessness, because fire corresponds to the heart. Wood in dead and extinct positions mainly results in wind disturbance, dry and dim eyes, dizziness, muscle and tendon stiffness, brittle nails, mood swings, and picky eating, because wood corresponds to the liver, which governs the tendons, has its orifices in the eyes, and its manifestation is in the nails. Metal in dead and extinct positions mainly causes shortness of breath, coughing, dry and rough skin and hair, joint pain, uncontrollable sneezing and tears, and bloody diarrhea from the large intestine, because metal corresponds to the lungs and large intestine, and the lungs govern the skin and hair. Earth in dead and extinct positions mainly leads to a yellow complexion, reduced appetite, obstruction in the diaphragm area and vomiting, laziness in the limbs, excessive sleeping, overthinking, deafness, confusion, forgetfulness, and lack of activity, because earth corresponds to the spleen and stomach.

There are cases where illness arises from mutual control between two elements. When metal and fire mutually control each other, if both are in a state of growth and strength, it leads to sores and swellings; if both are in a state of decline and exhaustion, it results in tuberculosis with coughing blood—when the vital energy is strong, the illness manifests externally, but when the vital energy is weak, the illness affects internally. When earth and wood mutually control each other, in a state of growth and strength, it causes fatigue and restlessness, dizziness and blurred vision, wind syndrome with numbness, and pain and swelling in the small intestine; in a state of decline and exhaustion, it leads to vomiting of food, formation of masses in the abdomen, and conditions such as abscesses,痞块, and stagnation, or even stroke. When metal and wood mutually control each other, in a state of growth and strength, it causes disability in the limbs and joints, and eye diseases; in a state of decline and exhaustion, it results in deficiency of vital energy and loss of essence, tuberculosis, and paralysis. When water and earth mutually control each other, it leads to spleen dampness causing diarrhea, fullness and distension in the upper abdomen, and difficulty in expectorating phlegm.

There are also cases where mutual generation leads to illness—mutual generation is beneficial, but if it is excessive, it causes blockage, and if it lacks energy, it results in depletion, thus causing disease. When wood and fire mutually generate, if they are strong, it causes congestion in the upper part of the body, blockage between the ribs, red eyes, and headaches; if they are weak, it leads to cold damage with mania, restlessness, and confusion. When fire and earth mutually generate, if they are strong, it causes fullness and stagnation in the stomach; if they are weak, it results in dry lips, redness, heat accumulation, and constipation. When metal and water mutually generate, if they are strong, it causes stagnation of qi; if they are weak, it leads to unstable eye movement. When water and wood mutually generate, if they are strong, it causes vomiting and stomach deficiency; if they are weak, it results in deterioration of essence and qi, leading to cold damage and persistent malaria. When metal and earth mutually generate, if they are strong, it causes weakness and failure to develop muscle; if they are weak, it leads to continuous intestinal sounds like silk being drawn. Whenever water, earth, and wood meet in a place without energy, it indicates diseases such as distension, intestinal fullness, and vomiting. Whenever gold, water, and fire meet in a place without energy, it indicates dysentery—because gold corresponds to the large intestine, and water and fire each occupy one side, causing imbalance between yin and yang. Whenever water meets earth, it often indicates regurgitation; if there is too much earth without water qi to guide it, it leads to deafness. This is because kidney water cannot circulate, causing regurgitation, and qi cannot flow, resulting in deafness.

It is also said that when discussing disabilities and illnesses, one should first examine the day stem, then carefully consider the month branch, and finally combine the year pillar and hour pillar for a comprehensive analysis. The "Wounding Official" (伤官) indicates disability, and an excessive presence of the "Seven Evils" (七煞) is similarly indicative. The Qian trigram is located in the亥 position, which is the Heaven Gate. Those born on six days with the metal stem (辛) who have亥 as their day and hour, often suffer from blindness and deafness. This is because亥 corresponds to the kidney, which governs the ears, and also because the fire (丙) is overcome by water. The Zi position belongs to the Kan trigram, and if both the Wounding Official and Seven Evils are strong and mutually harm each other, it indicates illness in the lower body. The寅 position belongs to the Gen trigram, which governs the spleen and stomach, and illness is reflected in a pale yellow complexion. The辰 position belongs to the Zhen trigram, which signifies movement. Those born in this month with the Wounding Official are prone to convulsions in childhood, as the Zhen trigram represents movement. Light cases may involve fright or stomach ailments, while severe cases may involve foot diseases. The巳 position belongs to the Xun trigram, and if both the Wounding Official and Seven Evils are strong, it indicates women's disorders of blood and qi, as well as chronic fatigue. The午 position belongs to the Li trigram, which governs the eyes. If both the Wounding Official and Seven Evils are strong, it indicates blindness and headaches. The申 position belongs to the Kun trigram, which is where many yin forces gather. If both the Wounding Official and Seven Evils are strong, it indicates diseases of the waist, legs, and bones; however, those with the "Wounding Official Exhausted" (伤官伤尽) pattern are an exception. The酉 position belongs to the Dui trigram, which indicates oral and dental disabilities. The戌 position is the fire store, and it indicates hemorrhoids and anal diseases. Those with the Wounding Official in the丑 or 未 positions also suffer from spleen and stomach ailments. If both the Wounding Official and Seven Evils are strong, one is prone to annual epidemics. If the beneficial elements are in conflict and mutually overcome, and there is no assistance from the Five Phases, it leads to physical disabilities and injuries to the head and face.

It is also said that all evil stars are associated with specific diseases. Jiesha governs diseases of the small intestine, as well as deafness and throat ailments. Guanfu governs diseases of the waist and legs. Xianchi governs drowning in wine and lust, as well as consumption, pus and blood disorders, and diseases of the excretory organs. Zhuohao governs mental confusion or the growth of warts on the body. Feilian, also called Tian Gu, causes blindness in both eyes if all the branches are without energy. If the Lu Spirit becomes ill due to the泄气 (leakage of energy) of the food spirit, it must be accompanied by aInauspicious Sha (evil star) attacking the body. If a person's fate truly involves a冲 (clash) causing the energy to scatter, or a刑 (punishment) causing the energy to scatter, they are likely to be disabled. The groups of heavenly stems Jiachen, Jiawu (where 'wu' should be 'xu' as in the original text), Yichou, and Yiwei, where earth and wood interact, indicate paralysis. The groups of heavenly stems Bingshen and Dingyou, where metal and fire interact, indicate injury to the blood vessels, tendons, and sinews. The groups of heavenly stems Wuzi and Jihai, where water and earth interact, indicate diseases of the spleen and stomach. The groups of heavenly stems Gengyin and Xinmao, where metal and wood interact, indicate damage to the bones and sinews and coughing ailments.

When predicting illness or misfortune, first examine the "L禄", "命", and "身" (wealth, destiny, and self). Then consider the condition of the big and small years. If all three lack vitality, and both the Lu Spirit and the Post-horse are in a state of decline, but there is wealth in the禄 and wealth in the命, and they are in a prosperous and strong position, then death is not certain. If the father is ill and we are to predict it from the son's destiny, then if the son's destiny encounters "Guchen", "Guasu", "The Mourning-and-Condolence spirit", "Yueke", and "Baiyi Sha" in the命宫, the father is certainly suffering from an incurable illness. The same method applies to predicting between husband and wife.

On the fortune of women's destiny

Someone asked: Where is the fortune of a woman? The answer is: It benefits from the "husband star." If the husband is prosperous, the wife will certainly be prosperous; if the husband is in difficulty, the wife will certainly be in difficulty. A woman follows her husband, so first we look at the "husband star" to determine her birth status; then we look at the "child star" to examine her later years' honor and disgrace. If the destiny has "official star," "malevolent star," and "wealth" all in a favorable position, the husband will be prosperous; if the "food god star" is in a favorable position, the children will be prosperous. A prosperous husband means a noble birth and a life of happiness; prosperous children mean a later life of being well cared for by descendants and receiving imperial commendation and official titles. There are also cases where a woman can bring prosperity to her husband, because the "food god star" generates wealth, and wealth generates official star, with each one supporting the next. Conversely, if this chain is broken, it will not be like this.

A woman's destiny considers the person who overcomes her as her husband and the person she gives birth to as her children. Both should be in season and possess strong vitality. If the strong vitality is only present in the time column, one can take the "official star" as the husband, and then the "seven evils" should not appear again; if one takes the "seven evils" as the husband, then the "official star" should not appear again—only one should be present. If there are two official stars in the destiny without the "seven evils" to mix in, or if all four columns are "seven evils" without the "official star" to interfere, it is considered a good wife. If the person themselves is also strong, it is even better, but the strength should not be excessive. The "food god star" is the star for children. If it appears in the time column and is in a strong position, and also receives the support of the "Heavenly Virtue" and "Monthly Virtue," then it indicates a prosperous husband and successful children. It is not good if the body is too strong, the husband star is repeated and hidden, or if the "hurt official," "seven evils," and "qiu gang" are in conflict, or if the "yang ren" is too strong, or if there are too many harmonizing stars and everything is in harmony—these all indicate bad fortune. The same applies when encountering these in the big years and destiny cycles. There are also the "eight methods" and "eight patterns" to consider, which must be carefully distinguished.

Pure and noble, refined and esteemed.

Chun

The term "pure" refers to being singular and focused. For example, if a person's chart has only one official star or one seven deadly star, and also has wealth and education stars, without encountering punishment and clash, and the elements do not mix together, this is called pure. For instance, in the case of癸巳 (where "巳" is used instead of "已" as in the original text), 戊午, 辛酉, and 丙申: the day's ruler is 辛 gold sitting on 酉, which is its own exclusive fortune, strong but not following change. 辛 gold takes 丙 fire as its official star, which represents the husband. In May, fire is strong, so the husband is strong and healthy. 丙 fire takes 癸 water as its official star, and 癸 water is sitting on the nobleman's position. Seeing 戊 earth as the food star of 丙 fire, 戊 and 丙 both return to their禄 in 巳. 辛 gold producing 癸 water is the son, and when it reaches 申 time, it is exactly the place where 癸 water is born. The heavenly stems 癸, 戊, 辛, and 丙 have water and fire in mutual balance and harmony; the earthly branches 巳, 午, 酉, and 申 have the wealth repository in the middle. Therefore, this is a case where the husband holds an official position, the person enjoys court salary, and both husband and son achieve honor and wealth.

And

The concept of "harmony" refers to a state of tranquility and calm. For example, if the day master is weak and the chart contains only one husband star, with no conflicting or attacking elements in the four pillars, and the person has received a balanced and moderate qi, this is called harmony. Take the case of the combination of Jisi, Xinhai, Jimao, and Jimao: Jia soil takes Jia wood as its husband, and Hai is the place where Jia wood is born, which is considered to have both heaven and earth advantages. Jia wood takes Xin metal as its official star, and Xin metal is born in Ji (which should be Si, as in the original text); Jia soil also takes metal as its son, which is also born in Si. This is called the husband star being in the official star's position and the son star receiving birth, thus indicating a prosperous husband and strong son. Although the day master sits on the Mao branch, and the wood in Mao is a seven evil star for Jia soil, there is Geng metal in Si to control it, forming a pattern of "eliminating the evil and retaining the official," which is a noble pattern for a woman's chart.

Clear.

the so-called "clear" means purity. For a woman's destiny, if she has only one official star or only one seven evil star, and they are not mixed together, it is called clear. Moreover, the husband's star should be strong, and the four pillars should have wealth to generate the official star and education to support the body, with no trace of turbidity, then it is considered clear and noble. For example, in the case of Ji Wei, Renshen, Yi Wei, and Jiashen: the wood of Yi is married to the metal of Geng, and the metal's strength is in Shen; the fire of Ding is the son, and the fire is strong in Wei; the water of Ren is the education, and the water is born in Shen. The day stem Yi wood sits on Wei soil, which is its wealth. Wealth is strong and can generate the official star, and there is no punishment, clash, or destruction in the four pillars. The classic says: if a woman's destiny has wealth, official star, and education, she will certainly strengthen her husband.
