On the Dinghai day in the second lunar month, the lesson is cast by placing the Month General Wu on the亥 hour, to divinate about childbirth. This example is found in the "Liu Ren Zhi Zhi," and the "Zhi Zhi" is derived from the old version of "Gu Jian."

This chart is cast with the month general Wu added to the hour Hai. The Heaven Plate is one position behind the Earth Plate. The Heavenly Generals on the Heaven Plate's twelve branches are: Zi with Black Tortoise, Chou with Tai Chang, Yin with White Tiger, Mao with Tian Kong, Chen with Azure Dragon, Si with Gou Chen, Wu with Liu He, Wei with Vermilion Bird, Shen with Teng Snake, You with Nobleman, Xu with Heavenly Empress, and Hai with Tai Yin. The hour Hai belongs to night, so the night nobleman You is used for the day stem Ding. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson is the day stem Ding lodging in the palace Wei, with Wei getting Wu, which is governed by Liu He; the second lesson is Wu getting Si, which is governed by Gou Chen; the third lesson is the day branch Hai getting Xu, which is governed by Heavenly Empress; the fourth lesson is Xu getting You, which is governed by Nobleman. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Xu, with the hidden stem Bing Xu, governed by Heavenly Empress, representing a son or daughter; the middle transmission is You, with the hidden stem Yi You, governed by Nobleman, representing wife or wealth; the final transmission is Shen, with the hidden stem Jia Shen, governed by Teng Snake, also representing wife or wealth. The sequence of Xu, You, Shen retreats one step each time, forming the pattern of retreat.

Shao Yanhe said: When casting the divination chart at the hour of Hai, the day branch Hai harmonizes with the hour. The first transmission is Xu placed on top of Hai, which is the upper god overcoming the lower god, indicating a yang yang appearance, which should mean a male child. Hai on the human body represents the head, and Xu represents the foot. Now the foot is placed on top of the head, which is likely to indicate a breech birth, where the fetus's feet come out first. The final transmission is Shen riding Teng Snake, Shen directly opposing Yin, and Yin is occupied by White Tiger, which is the blood taboo god. Yin is also placed on top of Mao, so it is determined that the child will be born on the day of Mao. Later, it indeed came true.

Dinghai day · July divination of the intention (same chart with three interpretations from three people)

On the Dinghai day of the seventh month, using the Snake (巳) as the Month General added to the hour of the Horse (午) to cast the divination, the diviner predicts the "coming intention" — that is, before the person even speaks, the divination reveals the purpose of their coming. This example comes from "The One-Character诀 Yulianhuan." Then three people come to consult, using the same divination board, because their years and ages are different, and the matters they inquire about are different, the spirits used for interpretation vary, thus resulting in three completely unrelated predictions.

This chart is cast with the month general at巳, placed on the午 hour. The heaven plate is one position behind the earth plate. The午 hour belongs to the day, so the daytime nobleman is亥. The nobleman is located at the子 position on the earth plate and moves in the clockwise direction. Therefore, the heavenly generals on the twelve earthly branches are:亥 with the nobleman,子 with the teng snake,丑 with the vermilion bird,寅 with the liu he,卯 with the gou chen,辰 with the azure dragon,巳 with the tian kong,午 with the white tiger,未 with the tai chang,申 with the black tortoise,酉 with the tai yin, and戌 with the heavenly empress. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson is the day stem丁, which lodges in the palace of未, and at未 there is午, which is乘 by the white tiger; the second lesson is at午, which has巳, which is乘 by the tian kong; the third lesson is at the day branch亥, which has戌, which is乘 by the heavenly empress; the fourth lesson is at戌, which has酉, which is乘 by the tai yin. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is戌, with the hidden stemBingxu,乘 by the heavenly empress, representing the son; the middle transmission is酉, with the hidden stemYiyou,乘 by the tai yin, representing the wife's wealth; the final transmission is申, with the hidden stem甲申,乘 by the black tortoise, also representing the wife's wealth. The four lessons and three transmissions of this chart are exactly the same as the previous example of a divination for childbirth in the second month, only this one is cast at the午 hour using the daytime nobleman, while the previous one was cast at the亥 hour using the night nobleman. As a result, the entire set of heavenly generals changes, showing that the distinction between day and night is of great importance in the Six Rats system.

Xu Cibin said: The first person who came was a man born in the year of Wushen, aged fifty-four, who asked about his intention. The interpretation was: his son was drinking excessively outside, accumulating food in his stomach, and was affected by cold, thus falling ill. The reasoning was as follows: the time of casting the divination was at noon, and the day stem was Ding. The lodging palace of Ding was Wei, which formed aLiu He with the time of the day, indicating that the matter concerned his own family relations. The initial transmission was determined by the戌 on the day branch Hai. The person's birth year was Shen, and Shen had Wei on it. The戌 on the branch and the Wei on the birth year were both generated by Ding fire, thus both belonging to the son's hexagram. In July, the earth element was in rest and weak, so it was concluded that the illness was in the son's generation. The Wei on the birth year corresponded to the twelve spirits of the Six壬 system, known as Xiaoji. The Xiaoji was accompanied by Tai Chang, which governs wine, food, and meals. The Wei also appeared together with the initial transmission. The戌 on the body corresponds to the spleen and stomach, and the戌 was accompanied by Tianhou, which belongs to water, thus indicating injury from cold drinks affecting the center. Looking at the value of the door, it was White Tiger, which governs roads and people traveling outside. Combined, this meant that the son had fallen ill due to eating and drinking excessively while traveling outside, hence the father came to ask the divination.

The second person is a man aged thirty-five, born in the year of Dingmao. He also comes for divination. The interpretation is: he is involved with two women of low status outside, thus contracting a condition of qi stagnation and hemoptysis. The basis is: his heavenly stem is in the卯 position, where theLiu He is found, andLiu He indicates private and obscure matters. The Heavenly Empress indicates concealment and obstruction. The middle transmission also sees the Tai Yin, which signifies hidden and concealed things. The戌 is called Tiankui, and the酉 is called Congkui, both indicating servants or lowly people. The戌 is occupied by the Heavenly Empress, and the酉 is occupied by the Tai Yin, with two yin spirits each occupying a branch, so it is said he is involved with two lowly women. The Heavenly Empress belongs to water, which overcomes the Ding fire day stem. The final transmission,申, is occupied by the Xuanwu, which also belongs to water, and thus also overcomes the day stem. The戌,酉, and申 branches are precisely the place of death and burial for the Ding fire. The Ding stem in the human body governs the heart and blood, and since the day stem is heavily overcome by water, the illness becomes hemoptysis.

The third person is an 81-year-old born in the year Xinsi. The interpretation is: two servants have gone missing from his home, and he will rely on a man named Ma to search in the southwest direction, and he will be able to recover them. The basis is: the first transmission is戌, which is 'Tiankui', indicating servants; the middle transmission is酉, which is 'Congkui', indicating female servants; the final transmission is申, which is occupied by 'Xuanwu', symbolizing someone who is spying or stealing and fleeing. The door of the matter also shows 'Baihu', which governs roads. The lesson pattern is 'Zhanguan', which directly refers to fleeing. Now the person seeking the divination is an elderly person with an official position, so the missing ones are not himself but servants who have fled. The leading door is 'Shengguang' with the fire of午, which represents a man named Ma, as午 is the same type of fire as the day's god, and also indicates a man named Ma. The fire of午 can overcome the metal of申 and the Xuanwu, so it is certain that they can be recovered. The direction to search in the southwest is because the Xuanwu on申 has its hidden god in未, which is located in the southwest.

On Dinghai day, Qian was arrested by Chen Nanzhou.

In the year Dingchou of the Chongzhen era (the original text says 'Chongzheng'), seventh month, on the day Dinghai, at the hour Jiachen, Qian Shiyin, a mid-level official from Taicang, cast a divination for the case of Chen Nanzhou from Changshu who had been arrested and was being investigated. This example is taken from Chen Gongxian's "Six壬 Guide."

This chart is calculated using the month of July with the month general at巳, placed on the辰 hour. The heaven plate advances one position ahead of the earth plate. The辰 hour belongs to the day time, so for a day stem of丁, the daytime nobleman is at亥. The nobleman is located on the earth plate at戌 and moves in reverse. Therefore, the heavenly generals on each earthly branch are:亥 is occupied by the nobleman,子 by the heavenly empress,丑 by the great yin,寅 by the black tortoise,卯 by the great constant,辰 by the white tiger,巳 by the heavenly void,午 by the azure dragon,未 by the hook heaven,申 by the six harmonies,酉 by the vermilion bird, and戌 by the tending snake. (The original bottom line only printed '阴后' and was misaligned by one position; according to the four lessons, '丑' should be occupied by the great yin and '寅' by the black tortoise, so we follow the four lessons.) The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson has the day stem丁 lodging in the palace of未, with 申 on 未, 申 occupied by the six harmonies; the second lesson has 酉 on 申, 酉 occupied by the vermilion bird; the third lesson has 子 on 亥, 子 occupied by the heavenly empress; the fourth lesson has 丑 on 子, 丑 occupied by the great yin. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is 申, with the hidden stem Jiashen, occupied by the six harmonies, representing wife and wealth; the middle transmission is 酉, with the hidden stem Yiyou, occupied by the vermilion bird, also representing wife and wealth; the final transmission is 戌, with the hidden stem Bingxu, occupied by the tending snake, representing son and grandson. The sequence of 申, 酉, 戌 advancing in order indicates the pattern of advancing food.

Chen Gongxian said: This divination indicates a lawsuit which is extremely dangerous, with no way to escape. The reason is: the first transmission is Shen, which represents the imperial decree, governing the emperor's will, but it sits on the empty position of Wei, causing the imperial command to fall into emptiness. Teng Snake is on Xu and White Tiger is on Chen, both Xu and Chen are tomb deities, and they are placed on the positions of Mao and You respectively. Mao and You are the gates, and two tomb deities pressing on both gates resemble an open tomb, which inevitably leads to continuous deaths. The three transmissions and the heavenly general all carry calamity and killing, and the places of illness, death, tomb, and extinction of Ding fire appear together in the transmissions, where can there be any salvation? Moreover, the year of the person is occupied by Gou Chen with wood, Gou Chen governs punishment and corporal punishment, which is the image of the executioner holding a stick, thus it is concluded that a violent death is certain. Later, they indeed received the imperial decree for corporal punishment, and two people were shackled and executed.

I remarked: In this divination, the person's birth year is in Wu. By working backwards from the birth year, their true birth year is in You. The Teng Snake is riding on Xu, whose墓 is exactly on the birth year You, so it is especially dangerous. As for the phrase "year with the hook and blade and wood," the words "with wood" do not make sense. If we calculate according to the ten-day cycle, the Ding Hai day belongs to the Jiashen cycle. The birth year Wu is on Wei, which is riding on Gou Chen and falls exactly into the cycle's void. If we calculate according to the five sons' original遁, on a Ding day, the遁 starts from Gengzi hour. The Wei branch遁 out is the Ding stem, not the Yi stem. Why is it said to be with wood? Is it because Wei contains Yi wood?

Dinghai day · Mao Zhubu divined about future prospects

In the year of Wushen, fifth lunar month, on the day of Dinghai, the lesson was cast by placing the Month General of Shen on the hour of Wu. The person consulting is Mao Zhubu, born in the year of Yihai, aged thirty-four, asking about his future prospects and official career. This example is from the "Fang Ben Zhan An."

This chart is cast with the month general at Shen, placed on the Wu hour. The Heaven Plate advances two positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The Wu hour belongs to the daytime, so the daytime nobleman is at Hai. The nobleman is located on the Earth Plate's You position and moves in reverse. Therefore, the heavenly generals on each branch of the Heaven Plate are: Hai is accompanied by the nobleman, Zi by the Heavenly Empress, Chou by Tai Yin, Yin by the Black Tortoise, Mao by Tai Chang, Chen by the White Tiger, Si by Tian Kong, Wu by the Azure Dragon, Wei by Gou Chen, Shen by Liu He, You by the Vermilion Bird, Xu by Teng Snake. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson is the day stem Ding, lodging in the palace Wei, with You on Wei, which is accompanied by the Vermilion Bird; the second lesson is You with Hai on it, which is accompanied by the nobleman; the third lesson is the day branch Hai, with Chou on it, which is accompanied by Tai Yin; the fourth lesson is Chou with Mao on it, which is accompanied by Tai Chang. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is You, with the hidden stem Yiyou, accompanied by the Vermilion Bird, representing wife and wealth; the second transmission is Hai, with the hidden stem Dinghai, accompanied by the nobleman, where Hai water overcomes Ding fire, representing official and ghost; the third transmission is Chou, with the hidden stem Jichou, accompanied by Tai Yin, representing son and grandson. You, Hai, and Chou each advance one position in sequence, forming the pattern of sequential transmission.

Shao Yanhe said: The酉 on the day stem is exactly the broken and shattered star, and it is also the initiating transmission as the first transmission. The middle transmission is亥, which is the official star, exactly placed on top of this broken and shattered star. This indicates first losing wealth and then obtaining official position, and this official position is obtained by spending money. The three transmissions and the nobleman are clearly visible above the day branch, indicating that after taking office, the official will have many duties and also be responsible for other positions. However, the nine evil spirits are located in the house position, indicating disorder and immorality within the family; if they are located on the person's birth star, it indicates that the person is lustful. The final transmission also sees丑 riding on Tai Yin, pressing upon the official star in the middle transmission. Tai Yin is a spirit of darkness and obscurity, indicating that he will die from lust while in office.

Ma Mou was originally a wealthy man, who made connections with people all over the country through money and thus obtained this position. After taking office, he used all his family's wealth to seek favors and connections, so he was constantly busy with his duties. Indeed, there was disorder at home, for Ma Mou was very fond of women and indulged his concubines and servants. He died in the year of Yimao. Investigating the divination: In the year of Yimao, the卯 (Mao) position had the巳 (Si), which together with the酉 (You) and丑 (Chou) in the lesson formed a Triple Harmony, thus activating the破碎煞 (Shanghai Sha). The nine evils were also the death deity on the day, and they conflicted with the middle transmission, which is called "conflict awakening the absolute deity." The death deity and the absolute deity came together, so the person died. Generally, when examining the lesson and transmission, one should be most cautious of the nobleman being present throughout the entire chart, and also of the year of birth combining the killing deity. On the day of Dinghai, the lesson already had You and Chou, but lacked a Si. However, the Si appeared at the Mao position in the year of Yimao, completing the Triple Harmony, which is called "combining the killing deity," hence it could not be avoided.

Dinghai day · Dai Yang divined Mao Bao's rebel troops attacking Wuchang.

In the fifth year of Emperor Jian of the Jin dynasty, in the tenth month, on a day marked Dinghai, the Month General was placed on the hour of Zi and the divination was started. At that time, it was said that Mao Bao's rebellious troops were about to attack the city of Wuchang, and Dai Yang cast a divination for this event. This example is taken from the "Book of Jin · Biography of Dai Yang." Dai Yang, whose name was Guoliu, was from Wuxing Changcheng, and held the position of prime minister in the Jin dynasty. He was skilled in divination, numerology, and wind divination, and his expertise was not limited to the art of Six壬 (Six Changes). (According to historical records, the battle at Zucheng took place in the fifth year of Xiankang of Emperor Cheng of the Jin dynasty, so there is a discrepancy in the dating here.)

This chart begins with the Month General at寅 (Yin) placed on the Zi (Zi) hour. The Heaven Plate advances two positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The Zi hour belongs to night, so the night nobleman (night贵人) is酉 (You). The nobleman is on the Earth Plate at the position of Wei (Wei) and moves in reverse. Therefore, the Heavenly Generals on each branch of the Heaven Plate are: You (酉) rides the nobleman, Xu (戌) rides the Heavenly Empress, Hai (亥) rides Tai Yin, Zi (子) rides the Black Tortoise, Chou (丑) rides Tai Chang, Yin (寅) rides the White Tiger, Mao (卯) rides Tian Kong, Chen (辰) rides the Azure Dragon, Si (巳) rides Gou Chen, Wu (午) rides Liu He, Wei (未) rides the Vermilion Bird, Shen (申) rides Teng Snake. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson is the Day Stem丁 (Ding) lodging in the palace of Wei (未), with You (酉) on Wei, which rides the nobleman; the second lesson is You (酉) with Hai (亥) on it, which rides Tai Yin; the third lesson is Hai (亥) with Chou (丑) on it, which rides Tai Chang; the fourth lesson is Chou (丑) with Mao (卯) on it, which rides Tian Kong. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is You (酉), with the hidden stem Yiyou, riding the nobleman, representing wife and wealth; the middle transmission is Hai (亥), with the hidden stem Dinghai, riding Tai Yin, where Hai water overcomes Ding fire, representing official and ghost; the final transmission is Chou (丑), with the hidden stem Jichou, riding Tai Chang, representing son and grandson. This lesson's four lessons and three transmissions are exactly the same as the previous one by Mao Zhubian regarding career prospects, both being on Dinghai day and with the Heaven Plate advancing two positions. The difference is that the previous one started at the Wu (午) hour using the day nobleman, while this one starts at the Zi (子) hour using the night nobleman. As a result, the entire set of Heavenly Generals changes, and the interpretations differ, one concerning official affairs and the other concerning military matters.

Dai Yang said: On the night of the tenth month, on the day of Dinghai, at the middle of the night, news of bandits was received. In the divination, the day stem represents the sovereign, and the day branch represents the subject. Specifically, the day stem is the Western Expedition General's residence, and the day branch Hai represents Zhu City. Yin is 'Gongcao' (Yin), here acting as the bandit god. Now Yin is placed over Zi time. In the tenth month, water is prosperous and wood is strong, so the bandit god is both prosperous and strong and coincides with the time, so the bandits will certainly come. The number of Yin is seven, and the number of Zi is nine, so the number of bandits is nine thousand, or seven thousand. You is 'Congkui' (You), riding on the nobleman and placed over the lodging palace of Ding. The lower god conquers the upper god and is connected with the empty period, indicating that the bandits dare not advance to Wuchang. Later, the bandits indeed only captured Zhu City and then retreated.

Chen Gongxian commented on this divination: the enemy troops are coming from the southwest, and Wuchang city will certainly be safe. Someone asked: the "You Du" representing the bandits is far away from both the day stem and day branch, so how can we know for sure that the enemy will come? The answer is: the酉 (You) is riding on the nobleman, is located above the day stem, and is the first transmission. Since the position of酉 is to the west-southwest, we know that the enemy will come from the southwest. Another question: how many soldiers are there? The answer is: since You Du is too far from the day stem and day branch, and the nobleman on the day stem is empty, we can only combine the upper and lower deities at the time of the divination, estimating the number to be between seven thousand and nine thousand, taking the middle number as approximately six thousand three hundred. Another question: why do you say the city will be safe? The answer is: the nobleman is on the day stem but is being restrained, so the enemy's attack cannot succeed, thus we know the enemy will not attack the city and will retreat instead.

This textbook was compiled during the reign of Emperor Jianwen of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, when Mao Bao's rebellious troops were stationed at Zhu City. The court ordered the chancellor Dai Yang to divinate the situation, and the result was later recorded in historical records. I was initially unaware of this historical event, but to my surprise, my divination method coincided exactly with the ancient divination results. Let me add a few more layers of interpretation: this divination chart is entirely of a pure yin nature. The yin spirit of the Zi branch is superior to "Lu Du" and thus overcomes the day stem, indicating that the enemy troops have set up ambushes. The day branch represents the city, and the spirit on the branch overcomes it, while this spirit is itself overcome by its own yin spirit, indicating that the defenders of the city lack integrity and there will be internal conflicts. Moreover, the final transmission generates and harmonises with the first transmission's nobleman, indicating that there are secret defectors within the city. These layers were not fully explained by previous scholars, so I have written them down without hesitation to leave for future scholars.

Dinghai day · Fu Qingqing divines his whole life

In the year Jiyou, eighth lunar month, day Dinghai, using the Chen month general placed on the Chou hour to cast the divination. The person consulting is Fu Qingqing, born in the year Renshen, aged thirty-eight, asking about his overall fortune throughout his life. This example is taken from "Fang Ben Zhan An."

This chart begins with the month general at Chen, placed on the Chou hour. The Heaven Plate advances three positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The Chou hour belongs to night, so the night nobleman is Yǒu. The nobleman is located on the Earth Plate's Wu position and moves in reverse. Therefore, the heavenly generals on each branch of the Heaven Plate are: Yǒu with the nobleman, Xu with the Heavenly Empress, Hai with Tai Yin, Zi with the Black Tortoise, Chou with Tai Chang, Yin with the White Tiger, Mao with Tian Kong, Chen with the Azure Dragon, Si with Gou Chen, Wu with Liu He, Wei with the Vermilion Bird, Shen with Teng Snake. (The Heaven Plate circle in the original diagram was incorrectly marked by one position; the heavenly generals are now determined according to the four lessons and three transmissions.) The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson has the day stem Ding lodging in Wei, with Xu on Wei, which is occupied by the Heavenly Empress; the second lesson has Xu on Chou, which is occupied by Tai Chang; the third lesson has the day branch Hai with Yin on Hai, which is occupied by the White Tiger; the fourth lesson has Yin on Si, which is occupied by Gou Chen. There is no conflict between the upper and lower lessons, and the day stem does not remotely conflict with the upper god. Therefore, the method of "Mǎo Xīng" is used: since Ding is a yin day, take the position of Wu on the Earth Plate, which is under the Heaven Plate's Yǒu, as the first transmission. The middle transmission is the upper god on the day stem, which is Xu. The final transmission is the upper god on the day branch, which is Yin. Therefore, the first transmission is Wu with Liu He, representing a brother (the hidden stem is Bing Wu, but Wu is in the Jiashen cycle and is empty, as the next lesson clearly states "Wu Wei kōng," so it should be considered as empty); the middle transmission is Xu, with the hidden stem Bing Xu, occupied by the Heavenly Empress, representing a son; the final transmission is Yin, with the hidden stem Geng Yin, occupied by the White Tiger, representing an official. The branches Yin, Wu, and Xu form a fire trinity, which is called "Yán Shàng" (inflammation).

Shao Yanhe said: You already have a treasury with you, so why seek wealth elsewhere? Fu Qingqing asked: What does the term "attached treasury" refer to? The answer was: It is only beneficial for those who make a living through writing and calligraphy, which is your attached treasury. Other pursuits are not beneficial. Because the final transmission's parents and official seals are in the area of official ghosts, and it is accompanied by the White Tiger, which signifies disturbance and obstruction. Therefore, when you are just trying to establish a livelihood, you will encounter shortages and obstacles. Furthermore, the day stem Ding's禄神 is in Wu, and the initial transmission's Wu is placed on the卯 position, while Wu is also the empty position of the ten-day cycle. Since the禄神 is in an empty position, great wealth cannot be obtained, so you can only make a living through writing and teaching.

Dinghai day · Cheng Xiangyun divined the fortune of Jiashen year internally.

In the year Jiashen, during the first lunar month, on the day Dinghai and at the hour Jiyou, Cheng Xiangyun, who lived in Guangling, heard of an alarm of military disorder and cast a divination for the fortune of the entire year. After the beginning of spring in the first lunar month, the month general was still taken as Zi. The Zi general was placed on the Jiyou hour. The Heaven Plate advanced three positions relative to the Earth Plate, resulting in the same divination board as in the previous case where Fu Qingqing divined his lifetime fortune. The lesson pattern was "Mao Star." The three transmissions were Yin, Wu, and Xu, forming a fire trinity, known as "Inflaming Ascension." The Wu and Wei branches were exactly in the empty position of the Jiashen decade, while the Heaven Plate's You and Xu also fell precisely on the Earth Plate's Wu and Wei empty positions, hence it was said "You and Xu fell into emptiness."

The lesson plate is identical to the previous example: the earthly branches on the heaven plate are each accompanied by the following heavenly generals: You (酉) accompanied by the Nobleman, Xu (戌) accompanied by the Heavenly Empress, Hai (亥) accompanied by Tai Yin, Zi (子) accompanied by the Black Tortoise, Chou (丑) accompanied by Tai Chang, Yin (寅) accompanied by the White Tiger, Mao (卯) accompanied by Tian Kong, Chen (辰) accompanied by the Azure Dragon, Si (巳) accompanied by Gou Chen, Wu (午) accompanied by Liu He, Wei (未) accompanied by the Vermilion Bird, Shen (申) accompanied by Teng Snake. The four lessons, arranged from right to left, are Xu (戌) added to Ding (丁, with Ding residing in Wei), Chou (丑) added to Xu (戌), Yin (寅) added to Hai (亥), and Si (巳) added to Yin (寅). The heavenly generals in sequence are the Heavenly Empress, Tai Chang, the White Tiger, and Gou Chen. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Wu (午) accompanied by Liu He (旬空), the middle transmission is Xu (戌) accompanied by the Heavenly Empress, and the final transmission is Yin (寅) accompanied by the White Tiger. Yin, Wu, and Xu form a fire trinity. In the previous example, Fu Qingqing used this plate to inquire about his life's fortune and success, focusing on the禄神 (favorable god) falling into an empty space and the印绶 (seal) accompanied by the White Tiger. In this example, Cheng Xiangyun used the same plate to inquire about military calamity in a year, focusing instead on theTomb Spirit (burial god) covering the sun, the丧吊 (funeral and mourning) entering the transmission, and the游都 (wandering capital)刑岁 (crimes of the year). The question differs, so the deities consulted and the matters discussed are entirely different.

Cheng Xiangyun said that the tomb deity was pressing upon the day stem, and the tiger symbol carried by the White Tiger was facing the day branch. The spirits of mourning and condolence were both included in the three transmissions, with the final transmission especially involving the year's ruler and the White Tiger sharing the same branch. This indicated that there would certainly be unexpected incidents of war and loss in that year. Gou Chen and "You Du" fell into the position of the day branch's hidden spirit, which corresponded to the region of Youyan. On top of that, the death deity and hidden evil spirits were present, making warfare unavoidable. Moreover, both the day stem and day branch were riding on the spirit of departing energy, indicating that the court was empty both inside and out. The hidden spirit of the day branch and You Du also offended the year's ruler, which was unfavorable for the king. The hidden spirit of the day stem offended the day branch, indicating a military mutiny advancing from the northwest. The day branch, in turn, offended its own hidden spirit, meaning that the border generals and soldiers in the eastern part of the city would certainly become divided. Later, the rebels indeed attacked Yanjing, and an internal rebellion occurred in the city, resulting in the incident on the nineteenth day of the third month—on the day of Jiashen, which was the day the Chongzhen Emperor died and the capital fell.

On a Wuzi day

On a Wuzi day, in the third month, divination about losing a sheep.

On the Wuzi day of the third month, using the You month general to start the divination at the Yin hour, the question is about where a lost sheep is. This example is from the "Fang Ben Zhan An."

This divination chart uses the month general of You (酉) placed on the寅 (寅) hour to begin the calculation. The Heaven Plate advances seven positions ahead of the Earth Plate. For this lesson, the daytime nobleman for Wu (戊) day is Chou (丑), and the nobleman is located on the Earth Plate's Wu (午) position and moves in reverse. Therefore, the Heavenly Generals on each Earthly Branch of the Heaven Plate are: Chou (丑) is accompanied by the Nobleman,寅 (寅) is accompanied by the Heavenly Empress,卯 (卯) is accompanied by Tai Yin,辰 (辰) is accompanied by the Black Tortoise,巳 (巳) is accompanied by Tai Chang,午 (午) is accompanied by the White Tiger,未 (未) is accompanied by Tian Kong,申 (申) is accompanied by the Azure Dragon,酉 (酉) is accompanied by Gou Chen (written as 'Chen' in the chart),戌 (戌) is accompanied by Liu He,亥 (亥) is accompanied by the Vermilion Bird, and子 (子) is accompanied by the Teng Snake. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson has the day stem Wu (戊) lodging in Si (巳), with Si (巳) having Zi (子), which is accompanied by the Teng Snake; the second lesson has Zi (子) having Wei (未), which is accompanied by Tian Kong; the third lesson has the day branch Zi (子) having Wei (未), which is accompanied by Tian Kong; and the fourth lesson has Wei (未) having Yin (寅), which is accompanied by the Heavenly Empress. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Zi (子), with the hidden stem Wu Zi, accompanied by the Teng Snake, where Zi water is the wife and wealth for the Wu earth day stem; the middle transmission is Wei (未), which is in the empty position of the Jiashen (甲申) ten-day cycle, accompanied by Tian Kong, representing brothers; the final transmission is Yin (寅), with the hidden stem Geng Yin, accompanied by the Heavenly Empress, where Yin wood overcomes Wu earth, representing officials and spirits. The labels 'initial', 'middle', and 'final' next to the three transmissions indicate their order.

Shao Yanhe said: The trigram Zi (Rat) is riding on Teng Snake, which is placed on top of the day stem and initiates the transmission. Teng Snake governs sudden fright and alarm, indicating that the matter in question is an unexpected event. The middle transmission does not add on Zi, and since Zi is not among the twelve earthly branches, it is the sheep. Zi and Wei (the sheep) are in a harmful relationship, which corresponds to the sheep suffering damage. The sheep is not naturally associated with water, so it is not appropriate for it to be on the position of Zi, which is water. Moreover, Wei is riding on Tian Kong, and Tian Kong, as a heavenly general, is originally from Xu. Xu is in a conflicting relationship with Wei, and Xu, as an earthly branch, is the dog. Zi, in the five phases, is water. Taken together, this indicates that the sheep is driven by the dog into the water and then is slaughtered and cooked, placed in a jar and taken away, hidden in the toilet. Tian Kong has no vitality, and is symbolized as a vessel, and also governs dirty places, so it is interpreted as a jar and as a toilet. The final transmission's Yin (the tiger) is the tiger in the earthly branches, and the tiger is placed on the sheep, so it indicates the sheep is harmed. It is determined that the matter will not be resolved today, and later it indeed turned out to be so.

On the first day of the year in the Jiaxu year, divination for a sick woman.

On the first day of the first lunar month in the Jiaxu year, on the Wuzi day, the lesson was cast starting from the卯 hour with the Month General placed on the Zi branch, to inquire about the illness of a woman. "Yin person" refers to a woman. This example is from Guo Yuqing's "Guo's Divination Cases."

This chart is cast with the month general placed on the卯 (Mao) hour, and the heaven plate is three positions behind the earth plate. The卯 (Mao) hour belongs to the day, so on a戊 (Wu) day, the nobleman is at丑 (Chou). The nobleman is on the earth plate at辰 (Chen) and moves in a forward direction. Therefore, the heavenly generals on each branch of the heaven plate are: 丑 (Chou) is occupied by the nobleman, 寅 (Yin) by the treading snake, 卯 (Mao) by the vermilion bird, 辰 (Chen) by the six harmonies, 巳 (Si) by the hook chariot, 午 (Wu) by the azure dragon, 未 (Wei) by the heavenly void, 申 (Shen) by the white tiger, 酉 (You) by the great constant, 戌 (Xu) by the black tortoise, 亥 (Hai) by the great yin, and 子 (Zi) by the heavenly empress. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson is the day stem戊 (Wu) lodging in the巳 (Si) palace, with巳 (Si) having寅 (Yin), which is occupied by the treading snake; the second lesson is寅 (Yin) having亥 (Hai), which is occupied by the great yin; the third lesson is the day branch子 (Zi) having酉 (You), which is occupied by the great constant; the fourth lesson is酉 (You) having午 (Wu), which is occupied by the azure dragon. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is寅 (Yin), with the hidden stemGengyin (Geng Yin), occupied by the treading snake, where寅 (Yin) wood overcomes戊 (Wu) earth, representing official ghost; the middle transmission is亥 (Hai), with the hidden stemDinghai (Ding Hai), occupied by the great yin, representing wife's wealth; the final transmission is申 (Shen), with the hidden stem甲申 (Jia Shen), occupied by the white tiger, representing son's offspring. The three transmissions,寅 (Yin),亥 (Hai), and申 (Shen), each step retreats three positions.

Guo Yuqing said: I cast a divination for a woman who was seriously ill, with little hope of recovery. In this divination, the day stem is occupied by the wood trigram Yin, which represents the official ghost, and the three transmissions are arranged from bottom to top, each generating the next, and finally attacking the day stem. The day branch is You, which in the Jiashen decade is concealed by the stem Yi. The final transmission is Shen, which is concealed by the stem Ji. Both Ji and Yi are wood, so the entire transmission is filled with wood energy attacking the earth stem Wu. It is indeed very difficult to bear. However, although the illness is serious, the patient will not die. The "Bifa Fu" says: "The ghost and thief have no fear at the time." When the official ghost is in its proper season and is strong, it is not something to fear. On the eighth day of the first lunar month, the beginning of spring, the wood energy becomes stronger and tends to grow, and its strength is used to sprout branches and leaves upward, so it no longer attacks the earth downward, and thus gradually there is a chance of recovery. Indeed, on the eighth day the patient's condition improved day by day. In general, when the official ghost is weak, like a prisoner, it is more dangerous; but when the official ghost is strong and in its proper season, it does not harm people and is not something to fear. However, this is only true for wood. The strongest time for wood to attack earth is during autumn and winter, when wood is not strong. If it were gold, water, fire, or earth, the stronger they are, the more harmful they become, and they cannot all be treated the same way.

I remarked: The reason the illness can recover is really because the two metal spirits, Shen and You, reverse to restrain the寅 wood official ghost. After the eighth day, when the days of Shen and You are in charge, the illness naturally gets better day by day. I don't understand why Guo Gong did not use the line from the "Bi Fa Fu" "The position that controls the ghost is indeed a good doctor" to explain this.

On the Wuzi day, in the eleventh month, divination about the enemy forces of Anfeng.

On the Wuzi day of the eleventh month, using the寅 month general added to the卯 hour to cast a divination, the question was about the movements of the enemy forces in the area of Anfeng. Anfeng refers to the Anfeng Military Commandery of the Song dynasty, which was the frontline defending against northern troops. This example is taken from "One Needle Sees Blood."

This chart is cast with the month general at寅 (Yin) added to the卯 (Mao) hour. The heaven plate is one position behind the earth plate. The卯 (Mao) hour belongs to the day time, so the nobleman for the day stem 戊 (Wu) is at丑 (Chou). The nobleman is located at the寅 (Yin) position on the earth plate and moves in a forward direction. Therefore, the heavenly generals on each branch of the heaven plate are: 丑 (Chou) rides the nobleman, 寅 (Yin) rides the teng snake, 卯 (Mao) rides the vermilion bird, 辰 (Chen) rides the liu he, 巳 (Si) rides the gou chen, 午 (Wu) rides the azure dragon, 未 (Wei) rides the tian kong, 申 (Shen) rides the white tiger, 酉 (You) rides the tai chang, 戌 (Xu) rides the xuan wu, 亥 (Hai) rides the tai yin, and 子 (Zi) rides the heavenly empress. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson is the day stem 戊 (Wu) lodging in the巳 (Si) position, with the巳 (Si) branch having 辰 (Chen), which rides the liu he; the second lesson is the 辰 (Chen) branch having 卯 (Mao), which rides the vermilion bird; the third lesson is the day branch 子 (Zi) having 亥 (Hai), which rides the tai yin; the fourth lesson is the 亥 (Hai) branch having 戌 (Xu), which rides the xuan wu. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is 戌 (Xu), with the hidden stem Bingxu (Bing Xu), riding the xuan wu, representing a brother; the middle transmission is 酉 (You), with the hidden stem Yiyou (Yi You), riding the tai chang, representing a son; the final transmission is 申 (Shen), with the hidden stem Jiashen (Jia Shen), riding the white tiger, also representing a son. The sequence of 戌 (Xu), 酉 (You), and 申 (Shen) moves one step back each time, forming the pattern of retreating茹 (ru).

Zhu Bi submitted a memorial stating: The three transmissions are戌, 酉, and 申, which are all retreating in sequence, which is exactly the sign that the enemy forces are gradually withdrawing. The area of Anfeng, which was under attack for several days, is the subject of the divination. How could I dare to forget the country's worries and cast a single lesson on my own? I also went to the Office of Military Affairs and cast several other lessons, all of which were in proximity to the day's stem and branch. The month builder represents the authority of a marquis, which refers precisely to the region of Anfeng. The spirit "You Du" represents bandits, and now it is resting in that position, indicating that the enemy is pressing against the city. Looking at this particular lesson, You Du is located four positions before the day's stem and three positions after the day's branch. According to the divination method, it says: "When the second and third are in order, defense is needed; if it is in the fourth position before, it will not be surrounded." Therefore, the enemy has already retreated. However, they have not completely withdrawn, because You Du is still in the third position after the day's branch; the first transmission is also Tian Gui戌, which inevitably leads to some losses. Furthermore, looking at the two branches戌 and亥, which are activated during the day, they signify good news and messages. News should arrive within two or three days.

On the Wuzi day, in the Gengyin year, an official committed a wrongdoing and divined for himself.

In the year Gengyin, eleventh lunar month, on the day Wuzi, with the Month General Chou placed on the hour Yin, a lesson was cast. The person asking the question was an official who had committed a wrongdoing and was involved in a legal case. This example comes from "One Needle Sees the Essence." The placement of the Month General Chou on Yin is the same as the previous lesson where the Month General Yin was placed on Mao, with the Heaven Plate again one step behind the Earth Plate, making the two lessons identical except that the subject of the previous one was military affairs and this one is criminal law.

The divination board is the same as the previous example: the Heaven Plate has Chou multiplied by the Nobleman, Yin multiplied by Teng Snake, Mao multiplied by Vermilion Bird, Chen multiplied by Liu He, Si multiplied by Gou Chen, Wu multiplied by Azure Dragon, Wei multiplied by Tian Kong, Shen multiplied by White Tiger, You multiplied by Tai Chang, Xu multiplied by Black Tortoise, Hai multiplied by Tai Yin, and Zi multiplied by Heavenly Empress. The four lessons, arranged from right to left, are Chen with Wu (Wu is寄托 in Si), Mao with Chen, Hai with Zi, and Xu with Hai. The Heavenly Generals are in sequence Liu He, Vermilion Bird, Tai Yin, and Black Tortoise. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Xu multiplied by Black Tortoise, representing a brother; the middle transmission is You multiplied by Tai Chang, representing a son; the final transmission is Shen multiplied by White Tiger, also representing a son. The entire divination shows a retreating and consuming pattern. In the previous divination, the retreating and consuming pattern indicated the retreat of enemies, but in this case, the transmission of Shen and You, the metal elements, indicate punishment, injury, imprisonment, and death. The same retreating and consuming pattern, when asked about military matters, is favorable, but when asked about legal matters, it is unfavorable.

The divination says: This matter involves many people and is difficult to resolve; one enters a prison, then another. The first transmission has戌 placed on亥, for戌 is the native branch of the Heavenly General Tian Kong. On the day of Wuzi, the Nayin sound element is Leipishi fire, and戌 is the storage of fire. The middle transmission has酉 riding Tai Chang, placed on戌, with酉 and戌 being mutually harmful. The final transmission has申 riding Baihu, placed on酉, which is a place where metal is strong. The continuous transmission returns to the yin position, where yin governs severity and killing. Both申 and酉 belong to metal, indicating punishment and death in prison. The fire of Wuzi's Nayin element overcomes the metal of申 and酉, hence entering one prison after another, involving many people and difficult to resolve. Moreover, the divination also includes two storage positions,辰 and戌. Later, this person was sentenced to exile in the year Renchen during the first lunar month, and was exiled to his native state.
