Huai'an Xinfeng Army Huoqiu person Sun Chi, style name Xinying, served as an official in Qiandang and had not returned to his hometown for a long time. One day he went to visit Cao Taichen's nephew Cao Shufang to inquire about the fortune of his family residence. The date was Renchen, with Hai (Dengming) as the Month General, placed on the Chou hour to cast the divination.

The flattened lesson pattern diagram. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals:卯 is occupied by the Nobleman, 辰 by the Heavenly Empress, 巳 by Tai Yin, 午 by the Black Tortoise, 未 by Tai Chang, 申 by the White Tiger, 酉 by Tian Kong, 戌 by the Azure Dragon, 亥 by Gou Chen, 子 by Liu He, 丑 by the Vermilion Bird, 寅 by Teng Snake. The Nobleman is located on 卯, and the heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem Ren (which resides in Hai) has 酉, which is occupied by Tian Kong; the second lesson, 酉 has 未, which is occupied by Tai Chang; the third lesson, the day branch 辰 has 寅, which is occupied by Teng Snake; the fourth lesson, 寅 has 子, which is occupied by Liu He. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Gengyin, which is the son爻 occupied by Teng Snake; the middle transmission is Wuzi, which is the brother爻 occupied by Liu He; the final transmission is Bingxu, which is the official ghost爻 occupied by the Azure Dragon. The day stem Ren belongs to water, and water is also present in the four lessons with 子, which serves as the basis for the statement that there is water surrounding the house; 寅 is the long life position of fire, and Teng Snake is placed on it and added to the house, which serves as the basis for the statement that there is a fire hazard.

Miao Shufang said: This house is surrounded by water on all sides, because Renchen is a day of water, and the Four Lessons also contain the water of Zi. Yin is the position of birth for fire, which overcomes the house and initiates the transmission, and it is accompanied by Teng Snake, indicating that there will be repeated fires in the house. Fortunately, there is a lot of water, so there is still a chance of salvation. However, the Middle Transmission and Final Transmission have Qinglong and Baihu circling around Gen direction (the commentator notes: here it should also be using Si as the Nobleman), indicating there will be lightning striking the tomb and causing alarm and injury to the elderly in the family. The family members inside the house are however unharmed. There will certainly be news coming in soon. After half a month, indeed a servant came from Anfeng, and upon careful inquiry, it turned out to be exactly as Miao Shufang had predicted.

The statement "The Azure Dragon and White Tiger circle around the Mountain (Geng) direction" is used to conclude there will be thunder. But how can it be known that the Azure Dragon and White Tiger actually circle around the Mountain direction? In my opinion, it must be because the寅 (Yin) is the Thunder God's evil spirit, and when the Teng Snake is added to the house and attacks it, its hidden spirit meets the Liu He, thus causing thunder alarm. The辰 (Chen) is the burial place of the Day Stem. All the earth of the four seasons, namely Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, represent the elderly. Therefore, it is said "thunder strikes the tomb, causing alarm and harm to the elderly."

On Renchen day, Qiao Jiqian divined about a chest (from the Book of Divination for the Herdsman).

In the year Xinsi, sixth lunar month, on the day Renchen, using "wu" (Shengguang) as the Month General, the lesson is cast starting from the hour Shen. The person asking the question is Qiao Jiqian, born in the year Renchen, fifty years old this year, inquiring whether he can obtain the post of "xiang" in the state of Chu. This case is from Wang Mufu's "Zhanyan."

The lesson pattern is the same as the previous case: at the亥 (Hai) general and丑 (Chou) hour, the Heaven Plate is again two positions behind the Earth Plate. Outer circle:卯 (Mao) is occupied by the Nobleman,辰 (Chen) by the Heavenly Empress,巳 (Si) by Tai Yin,午 (Wu) by the Black Tortoise,未 (Wei) by Tai Chang,申 (Shen) by the White Tiger,酉 (You) by Tian Kong,戌 (Xu) by the Azure Dragon,亥 (Hai) by Gou Chen,子 (Zi) by Liu He,丑 (Chou) by the Vermilion Bird,寅 (Yin) by the Teng Snake. The four lessons, read from right to left: the Day Stem, Ren (Ji Hai), has酉 (You) on it, occupied by Tian Kong;酉 (You) has未 (Wei) on it, occupied by Tai Chang; the Day Branch,辰 (Chen), has寅 (Yin) on it, occupied by the Teng Snake;寅 (Yin) has子 (Zi) on it, occupied by Liu He. The three transmissions: the first transmission isGengyin (Gengyin), the son's yao, occupied by the Teng Snake; the middle transmission is戊子 (Wuzi), the brother's yao, occupied by Liu He; the final transmission isBingxu (Bingxu), the official's yao, occupied by the Azure Dragon.寅 (Yin),午 (Wu), and戌 (Xu) could originally form a Triple Harmony fire trinity, serving as the wealth position for the Ren water, but now the middle one has become子 (Zi) water, which opens and occupies the午 (Wu) wealth. The following analysis points out that this difference cannot be obtained, and the root of the problem lies here.

Wang Mufu said: When divining, the time happens to be directly opposing the first transmission, so the matter cannot proceed smoothly. The three transmissions should have been the triple harmony of Yin, Wu, and Xu, forming a fire trinity and indicating a wealth position. However, the wealth position of Wu is disrupted by theLiu He (Liu He) of Zi water, which opens up the Wu wealth and takes it over. Zi and Ren both belong to water, indicating that a colleague has obtained this position. The Tian Kong (Sky Void) falls on You and is connected to the self, which is a declining energy, unable to generate or support, showing that the recommended person is also ineffective. The original birth stem is Yin, and the year stem is Chou, both belonging to the Gen trigram, which means 'stop'. Si represents the Three Chu regions, and the territory of that area is connected to Mao; the one that harmonizes with the nobleman is Xu, which is also connected to Zi. Wu and Si have no mutual relationship, so how could this position be obtained? Later it was found out that a man surnamed Zhang filled this position. In cases where the nobleman is taken by comparison, the authority lies in the government office, so this matter is mainly determined by the transportation office. As for commercial positions, they are determined by the first transmission, and theLiu He (Liu He) being on Zi is very appropriate: Zi is the first of the earth branches, andLiu He (Liu He) is associated with commerce, so this image is acceptable.

On the Renchen day, Fei Fei'an divined about the imperial examination (Guo's divination case).

In the Dingchou year of the Chongzheng era (i.e., Chongzhen), second month, on the Renchen day, using 'Hai' (Dengming) as the month general to cast the divination, Guo Yuqing divined for Fei Fufan, a senior colleague from Cixi, asking about the imperial examination. This case is recorded in Guo's 'Zhan An'. Below the phrase 'Hai general leads hundred', there is a suspected omission, and the time of divination is not specified. According to the calculated lesson pattern, it should be Hai general placed on top of Chou time.

A flat layout of the lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals:巳 is occupied by the Nobleman,午 by the Heavenly Empress,未 by Tai Yin,申 by the Black Tortoise,酉 by Tai Chang,戌 by the White Tiger,亥 by Tian Kong,子 by the Azure Dragon,丑 by Gou Chen,寅 by Liu He,卯 by the Vermilion Bird,辰 by Teng Snake. The Nobleman is located on巳, and the heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem Ren (located on亥) has酉, which is occupied by Tai Chang; the second lesson,酉 has未, which is occupied by Tai Yin; the third lesson, the day branch辰 has寅, which is occupied by Liu He; the fourth lesson,寅 has子, which is occupied by the Azure Dragon. The three transmissions: the first transmission isGengyin, which is the son's yao occupied by Liu He; the second transmission is戊子, which is the brother's yao occupied by the Azure Dragon; the third transmission isBingxu, which is the official's yao occupied by the White Tiger.寅 is both the day's horse and the year's horse, located on the first transmission as the initiating transmission; however, the three transmissions move from寅 to子, then to戌, which represents the transition from the visible to the hidden, and this meaning is used in the subsequent interpretation to indicate that he will fail the examination.

Guo Yuqing said: The day's post-horse and the year's post-horse both appear in the first transmission and initiation, which is originally auspicious; unfortunately, the pattern is named "Ming Yin" --寅 is the direction where the sun rises, but now it has retreated to the dark places of Zi and Xu, turning from light to darkness; furthermore, there is a change of vehicle and loss of energy, no curtain nobleman, and the post-horse is few. The day stem and day branch are also riding on the defeated and sick energies, so I dare not predict he will pass the examination. Later, it indeed turned out that way.

On the day of Guisi

On Guisi day, Zhang Yuanling asked about his entire life (fragmentary text).

Zhang Yuanling was born on the 13th day of the eighth lunar month in the 42nd year of the Kangxi era, on the day of Guisi at the hour of Si. He asked Master Huang about his fortune and misfortune in life. Master Huang used his birth date to cast a divination chart, taking "Chen" (Tiangang) as the Month General placed upon the Si hour, resulting in three transmissions: Mao, Yin, and Chou. This case is recorded in "The Fragmentary Compilation."

The left column shows Zhang Yuanling's four pillars: the year pillar is Xinyou, the month pillar is Dingyou, the day pillar is Guisi, and the hour pillar is Dingsi. In the middle is the spread-out lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the twelve branches with their respective heavenly generals:巳 is occupied by the Nobleman,午 by the Heavenly Empress,未 by Tai Yin,申 by the Black Tortoise,酉 by Tai Chang,戌 by the White Tiger,亥 by Tian Kong,子 by the Azure Dragon,丑 by Gou Chen,寅 by Liu He,卯 by the Vermilion Bird, and辰 by the Teng Snake. The Nobleman is on巳, and the heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson has the day stem癸 (with its lodging palace on丑) with子, which is occupied by the Azure Dragon; the second lesson has子 with亥, which is occupied by Tian Kong; the third lesson has the day branch巳 with辰, which is occupied by the Teng Snake; the fourth lesson has辰 with卯, which is occupied by the Vermilion Bird. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is卯, which is the son's爻 and occupied by the Vermilion Bird; the middle transmission is寅, which is the son's爻 and occupied by Liu He; the final transmission is丑, which is the official ghost's爻 and occupied by Gou Chen, which matches the previous statement of 'getting the three transmissions of卯,寅, and丑'. The子 on the day stem, occupied by the Azure Dragon, is what is referred to as 'Azure Dragon official salary' in the text.

Master Huang said: The day stem has the Azure Dragon and is the god of official rank, and the day branch has the sun shining on the dwelling position; there are two noblemen supporting Heavenly Joy, and the first transmission also receives the nobleman of curtain and screen. He is certainly going to pass the local examination. Zhang Yuanling asked: Since you know he will pass the local examination, can you tell which examination he will pass? Master Huang clapped his hands and calculated, then decided that he would pass in the Xinmao examination. Others asked him the reason. Master Huang said: Although it is reasoned out, it also depends on intuition. The day stem is Gui Si, belonging to the Jiashen decade, so starting from the戌 position on the earth plate, counting one year, thirty-one years later, his age falls on the辰 position; the卯 is on top of the辰, and the卯 is the Vermilion Bird and also the curtain and screen. The辰 below is Heavenly Joy — isn't this the time he will pass the examination? Therefore, he knows it is the Xinmao examination in the thirty-first year.

This method of calculating the year of birth based on the day of birth is not known to originate from which specific text.

Zhang Yuanling again asked whether he would have a son in the future. Huang said: In the three transmissions, all are child stars, which are the wood of寅 and卯. Looking at his entire birth chart, it is entirely of the metal structure, and the whole path has been attacking the child stars. Moreover, the寅 and卯 are in the酉 month, which is the Four Wastes and the child stars are weak and confined. It is feared that he will have few sons (the original text says 'fear that the Gui star is sparse and the Kong is missing', the last character is possibly incorrect). Later on, he indeed rose to a high official position but had no sons. This is indeed a unique method in the Six壬 system, so I have recorded this case in detail to expand the study.

On the day of Guisi, what does He Xuanyi say about the body and destiny? (Quick Essentials, Oral Reflections, Song Edition Zhao's Notes)

In the year Jiyou of the Jianyan era, third month, on the day Guisi, the month general 'Xu' (Hekui) was placed on the You hour to cast the divination. The person seeking the divination was He Xuanyi, born in the year Dingchou, thirty-three years old that year, asking about his destiny throughout his life. This case is recorded in the books 'Jieyao', 'Koujian', and the Song edition of 'Shao An'.

Flat lesson pattern diagram. Outer circle: the twelve branches with their respective heavenly generals:卯 (Mao) is occupied by the Nobleman, 辰 (Chen) by the Teng Snake, 巳 (Si) by the Vermilion Bird, 午 (Wu) by Liu He, 未 (Wei) by Gou Chen, 申 (Shen) by the Azure Dragon, 酉 (You) by Tian Kong, 戌 (Xu) by the White Tiger, 亥 (Hai) by Tai Chang, 子 (Zi) by the Black Tortoise, 丑 (Chou) by Tai Yin, 寅 (Yin) by the Heavenly Empress. The Nobleman is located on Mao, and the heavenly generals are arranged in a clockwise order. Four lessons, from right to left: First lesson: the day stem is Gui (with its lodging palace in Chou), and Yin is seen on it, with Yin occupied by the Heavenly Empress; Second lesson: Yin is occupied by Mao, with Mao occupied by the Nobleman; Third lesson: the day branch is Si, and Wu is seen on it, with Wu occupied by Liu He; Fourth lesson: Wu is occupied by Wei, with Wei occupied by Gou Chen. Three transmissions: the first transmission is Wei, which is the official ghost爻 (yao) occupied by Gou Chen. Wei is in the empty position of the current term, so it is marked as "empty Wei"; the middle transmission is Jiashen, which is the parent爻 (yao) occupied by the Azure Dragon; the final transmission is Yiyou, which is the parent爻 (yao) occupied by Tian Kong. The day is Gui Si, belonging to the Jiashen term, with the empty positions in Wu and Wei. The day branch Si and the first transmission Wei are both located in the southern direction, which refers to the statement "the three transmissions and the dwelling place are in the southern direction" mentioned later.

Shao Yanhe said: This person is lustful and fond of women, with high ambition and great aspirations. The three transmissions along with the dwelling position are all in the south. He will find it difficult to have smooth relations with his family throughout his life, because the position of Wei represents family members, and Wei happens to be in the旬空. He must work hard and put in great effort to accumulate wealth. The final transmission reaches You in the later years, and he will become even more lustful, with a concubine taking charge of the household and mistreating others, eventually dying at the hands of this concubine. Later, his family fortune will increase several times more than it is now, but it will be stolen by this concubine. His age position falls on the position where the day branch is broken, and it is occupied by Tai Chang, indicating mourning for an external relative and also a miscarriage by the daughter-in-law due to illness. This will become clear in late March or early April. Later, He Xuanyi indeed became arrogant and competitive, working hard to accumulate wealth through trade. In the year Gengzi, there was a pause, because Gengzi is in the same position as his own. The wealth line of the dwelling and the three transmissions are both in the south, so this person transported goods to the south and made a profit to establish his family. However, he should not have favored one concubine too much, and eventually she stole his property. In that year, there was mourning for the mother-in-law in May, a miscarriage by the eldest daughter-in-law in March, and another miscarriage by the second daughter-in-law due to a cold and fever in July.

The reasoning is based on the day stem being connected to the Heavenly Empress riding on寅 wood.寅 wood is a spirit that releases energy, and it further releases energy to巳 and午, so it indicates that women will not give birth full term in the third and fourth months.寅 is associated with酉 being broken, and酉 is placed on申, so the seventh month is also similar.寅 is associated with亥 being the place of growth, and亥 is riding on Tai Chang, so it indicates there will be mourning for parents.亥,卯,未 form a triple harmony, and in the fifth month, the month builder exactly has a 未, so there will be mourning in the fifth month. It is said that he becomes more indulgent in lust in his later years because酉 is riding on Tian Kong and is placed on the person whose癸 water has growth.

On the Guisi day, Shao Qi丞 asked about seeking wealth (from the case records and oral commentary).

In the year Jiyou, during the tenth month, on the day Guisi, the Month General 'Yin' (Gongcao) is placed on the 'Chou' hour to cast the divination. The person seeking the divination is Shao Qi Chengwu, born in the year Wuyin, thirty-one years old this year, asking about matters concerning wealth. This case is recorded in the Fang Ben's "Zhan An" and "Kou Jian."

The lesson pattern is exactly the same as in the previous case of He Xuanyi: the戌 general at酉 time and the寅 general at丑 time, with the Heaven Plate moving one step forward from the Earth Plate in the same way. Outer circle:卯 is occupied by the Nobleman, 辰 by the Teng Snake, 巳 by the Vermilion Bird, 午 by Liu He, 未 by Gou Chen, 申 by the Azure Dragon, 酉 by Tian Kong, 戌 by the White Tiger, 亥 by Tai Chang, 子 by the Black Tortoise, 丑 by Tai Yin, and 寅 by the Heavenly Empress. The four lessons, read from right to left: the Day Stem,癸 (located at 丑), has 寅 on it, occupied by the Heavenly Empress; 寅 has卯 on it, occupied by the Nobleman; the Day Branch,巳, has午 on it, occupied by Liu He; and 午 has未 on it, occupied by Gou Chen. The three transmissions: the first transmission is 未, representing the official ghost爻, occupied by Gou Chen and falling into the旬空; the middle transmission is Jiashen, representing the parents爻, occupied by the Azure Dragon; the final transmission is Yiyou, representing the parents爻, occupied by Tian Kong. The癸 water uses 午 fire as its wife wealth, and 午 is exactly in the旬空; the 寅 on the Day Stem is the son爻, which can generate the 午 wealth; the middle transmission 申 is the long life of 癸 water, and it is also occupied by the Azure Dragon, which is the class god of wealth. All the reasoning about seeking wealth comes from these points.

Shao Yanhe said: You are thinking of going to your wife's family to claim the money that was promised but never received; now that you have a son, you plan to ask your father-in-law to borrow it. Chengwu laughed and said: Exactly. The reasoning is: On a癸 day, the午 is the wealth. The午 also represents the wife. However, the午 falls in the旬空, so previously you could not get it. The寅 on the day stem is the son, which can generate the午 wealth, so you can use the reason of having a son to ask again. The middle transmission申 is the long life place of the day stem, representing the elder, and it is accompanied by the Azure Dragon, which is a type of wealth deity, so asking again will certainly succeed. However, later you will suffer from servants' troubles, and the money will be gained and lost quickly, because of the presence of Kongwang and brokenness. The year pillar is in酉, and酉 meets戌, which is the sixth harm; the White Tiger also combines with the blood branch, so you are likely to get into legal trouble, almost certainly facing punishment. Fortunately, the lesson forms a triple harmony, so it will eventually resolve.

The actual events were as follows: A man named Kang Bo, who was called Zhao Chengwu, married a wife named Zheng. At first, his father-in-law promised to give him a piece of land, but never did. After many years, he had a son and went to claim the land, but his father-in-law gave him three hundred thousand coins instead. The Zhao family had a servant named Yi Tong and a maid named Rong Nu, who had a secret relationship. Rong Nu stole money to give to Yi Tong, but Zhao caught them and had them beaten. That night, Yi Tong took a knife to harm his master, but Zhao managed to escape. The next day, Zhao tied Yi Tong up and sent him to the authorities for punishment. Yi Tong confessed that his master had privately allowed him to cultivate over thirty mu of land the previous year, promising him two hundred guan of money and agreeing to marry Rong Nu to him. Now that his master had broken his promise, he wanted to kill him. The authorities therefore investigated his illegal cultivation and failure to pay taxes. Zhao was beaten with sticks, and all the money he had previously received was spent, leaving him with nothing left.

On the day of Guisi, divining about a traveler (a person traveling on a journey).

In the eighth lunar month on a Guisi day, the month general is Chen (Tiangang), placed on the Yin hour to cast the divination. The person seeking the divination was born in the year of Guichou. The question concerns someone who is away from home. This case is from the "Xingren Leizheng."

A flat layout of the lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the earthly branches with their corresponding heavenly generals:卯 is accompanied by the nobleman, 辰 by the teng snake, 巳 by the vermilion bird, 午 by the liu he, 未 by the gou chen, 申 by the azure dragon, 酉 by the tian kong, 戌 by the white tiger, 亥 by the tai chang, 子 by the black tortoise, 丑 by the tai yin, and 寅 by the heavenly empress. The nobleman is located on 卯, and the heavenly generals are arranged in a clockwise order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, day stem 癸 (with its lodging palace at 丑) has 卯, which is accompanied by the nobleman; the second lesson, 卯 has 巳, which is accompanied by the vermilion bird; the third lesson, day branch 巳 has 未, which is accompanied by the gou chen; the fourth lesson, 未 has 酉, which is accompanied by the tian kong. The three transmissions: the first transmission is 未, representing the official ghost yao accompanied by the gou chen; the middle transmission is 酉, representing the parents yao accompanied by the tian kong; the final transmission is 亥, representing the brothers yao accompanied by the tai chang. The heaven plate's 子 is accompanied by the black tortoise and falls on the earth plate's 戌 position; the heaven plate's 丑 (which is the lodging palace of 癸) falls on the earth plate's 亥 position. The following discussion about the month when a person departs and the time of their return is based on these two positions.

Snow Heart says: In general, when determining the movement of a person, the day stem represents the person himself, and one should also look at the Black Tortoise and the final transmission which represents the person's steps. It also says: Taking the day stem as the person, one should see whether it is riding the post-horse, to determine whether he is moving or stationary. Now the Black Tortoise is on Wu and is riding Zi, which indicates departure in September. The lodging palace of Gui is on Chou, and Chou is on Hai, which is the post-horse, indicating movement. The final transmission is Hai, showing that the feet have already moved; Hai is also the brother's yao, and by the tenth month's season, he should return. The final transmission represents the steps, and one should look at whether the two post-horse it is riding are detained or attached. The classic says: When the post-horse meets a combination, it will be detained; when it is riding the growth, it will be attached to the stable; when it falls into kongwang, the feet will be broken.

On the Guisi day, Wang Jieyuan divined about the family residence (source: Fang Ben's divination case, Kou Jian, Jie Yao)

In the year Jiyou, third lunar month, on the day Guisi, with the month general "Xu" (Hekui) placed on the hour Wei, a divination was cast. The person seeking divination is Wang Jiuyuan, born in the year Xinwei, aged thirty-nine this year, asking about his family home. This case is recorded in the books Fangben's "Zhan An," "Kou Jian," and "Jie Yao."

The flat layout of the lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals:巳 is occupied by the Nobleman,午 by the Teng Snake,未 by the Vermilion Bird,申 by the Liu He,酉 by the Gou Chen,戌 by the Azure Dragon,亥 by the Tian Kong,子 by the White Tiger,丑 by the Tai Chang,寅 by the Black Tortoise,卯 by the Tai Yin,辰 by the Heavenly Empress. The Nobleman is located on巳, and the heavenly generals are arranged in a clockwise order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, on the day stem癸 (with its lodging palace at丑), shows辰, which is occupied by the Heavenly Empress; the second lesson, on辰, shows未, which is occupied by the Vermilion Bird; the third lesson, on the day branch巳, shows申, which is occupied by the Liu He; the fourth lesson, on申, shows亥, which is occupied by the Tian Kong. The three transmissions: the first transmission isJiashen, representing the parents' yao, occupied by the Liu He; the middle transmission is丁亥, representing the brothers' yao, occupied by the Tian Kong; the final transmission isGengyin, representing the children's yao, occupied by the Black Tortoise. The day stem癸巳 belongs to the甲申 decade, with甲申 as the beginning and癸巳 as the end.申 is also the long life position of癸 water, so the statement "the beginning adds to the end, forming a cyclical pattern" follows. The辰 on the day stem is the storage position of癸 water and is occupied by the Heavenly Empress, which serves as the basis for determining delays.

Shao Yanhe said: This divination is favorable for the dwelling but not for people; if used for predicting illness or litigation, it is a complete closed mouth hexagram. The day stem is on the storage position and is occupied by the Heavenly Empress, indicating stagnation, and the time fortune has not yet reached its peak - the Heavenly Empress is originally a stagnation spirit, and when it meets the storage position, it becomes even more stagnant. Fortunately, the dwelling has received the ritual spirit of this current ten-day period, which leads to the growth position to guide and connect, and also harmonizes with the dwelling, indicating that the family will add members, and women will be pregnant; however, it is ultimately unstable, but fortunately the growth position can protect. The亥 position is occupied by the sky void and carries the Ding spirit, mainly indicating the movement of jars and pots. The final transmission relates to offspring, and the child will be affected by dampness and wind. The southwest and northwest corners should not be altered. The land will suffer from water disasters. The year of the person is in the monkey position, indicating disputes within the family, and finally resolved by a Taoist priest mediating. Later events were: Wang Jieyuan, after passing the local examination and becoming a jinshi, encountered many difficulties, suspected that there was a disaster in the dwelling, and came for divination. He himself is on the storage position and is the Heavenly Empress, the辰 is the monthly builder, mainly indicating litigation, but although it is in its prime, it is the storage spirit and the stagnation spirit, how can it be activated now?

The heavenly stem and earthly branch of the house show the current stem's divine spirit, leading to the growth stage. This forms the pattern of "cyclic repetition" where the beginning of the ten-day period is placed over the end. Since the六合 is initiating the transmission, it indicates loss of people and loss of wealth. The middle transmission is亥 riding on the丁 spirit, placed over the beginning of the period. Therefore, construction should not be done in the southwest and northwest directions. The辰 is placed over the丑, which is a breaking relationship, so plowing should not be done, as it will inevitably be flooded. Later, that field was cultivated in the Xinchou year, and indeed it was completely flooded and turned into silt. On New Year's Eve, they moved a water jar, and the wife's pregnancy was almost lost, but it was saved. The寅 is combined with the Black Tortoise, indicating a risk of miscarriage. Fortunately, the申 is riding on the六合 and leads to the growth stage, which can control it, so the pregnancy was preserved. His eldest son, at twelve years old, returned from school and took a bath, getting wet and catching a cold. Later, he was fine. A dispute arose within the family, but it was resolved by a relative who was a Taoist priest. This is because the寅 is placed on the growth stage, which is the image of a Taoist priest. The scripture says: "When the寅 is on the growth stage, it represents the body of a Taoist priest."

On the Guisi day, Kong Qi Gong divined about marriage (Quick Essentials, Original Case Records, The Return to Ren, Oral Mirror).

In the year Jiyou, the tenth month, on the day Guisi, using 'Yin' (Gongcao) as the Month General, the calculation starts at the hour Hai. The person asking the question is Kong Qigong, born in the year Wuwu, who is fifty-two years old this year, inquiring about marriage. This case is found in the book 'Jieyao', Fang Ben's 'Zhan An', 'Ren Gui', and 'Kou Jian'.

The flat layout of the lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches each accompanied by a heavenly general:卯 is accompanied by the Nobleman, 辰 by the Teng Snake, 巳 by the Vermilion Bird, 午 by Liu He, 未 by Gou Chen, 申 by the Azure Dragon, 酉 by Tian Kong, 戌 by the White Tiger, 亥 by Tai Chang, 子 by the Black Tortoise, 丑 by Tai Yin, and 寅 by the Heavenly Empress. The Nobleman is on 卯, and the heavenly generals are arranged in order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem 癸 (which is in 丑) has 辰, which is accompanied by the Teng Snake; the second lesson, 辰 has 未, which is accompanied by Gou Chen; the third lesson, the day branch 巳 has 申, which is accompanied by the Azure Dragon; the fourth lesson, 申 has 亥, which is accompanied by Tai Chang. The three transmissions: the first transmission, Jiashen, is the parent's yao accompanied by the Azure Dragon; the middle transmission, 丁亥, is the brother's yao accompanied by Tai Chang; the final transmission, Gengyin, is the son's yao accompanied by the Heavenly Empress. The earthly spirits of the four lessons are the same as in the previous case, but the heavenly generals differ. The first transmission, 申, is the long life of 癸 water, and the final transmission, 寅, is directly placed on the long life of wood, 亥. The following interpretation of a relationship being successful and marriage resulting in a son is derived from this.

Shao Yanhe said: Kong is fifty-two years old and still to be a groom -- today the day stem is just coming out of the墓 to seek long life, so this marriage will certainly succeed. This woman is clean and upright, her figure is light and graceful, she knows reading and arithmetic, and is good at managing the household; after marriage, she will give birth to two sons, and they will enjoy happiness. But fear that soon there will be mourning for an elder in the family. Kong laughed and asked: How do you know this? The answer was: It can be clearly seen from the divination chart, only regret that nowadays people are not willing to put in the effort. The reasoning is: On a癸 day, seeing the first transmission at申 indicates long life, so it indicates a light and graceful figure; metal represents purity, so it indicates being clean and upright; long life is also the god of the school, so it indicates she knows reading and arithmetic and is good at managing the household. But亥 is riding on the丁 god and is present on top of long life, and also rides on Tai Chang, so it indicates mourning for a relative.

The final transmission is寅, which is the grandson's yao. It joins with the Heavenly Empress and is added to the wood's growth at Dinghai. Therefore, once married, there will be children.巳 and申 are in mutual relationship, and寅 and亥 are also in mutual relationship, so nothing fails to succeed. The four lessons and three transmissions do not have Kongwang, so one can enjoy happiness throughout life. Later events were as follows: The previous wife of Kong Gong, Lady Li, died, and he later married Lady Tong. The next year, he indeed had a son. At the age of fifty-eight, he had another son. This wife had some savings from her previous husband and was able to read and do accounts, taking care of all household affairs. However, after marrying in, less than fourteen months later, Kong's mother died.

On the Guisi day, Xu Ruren divined about her illness (Divination Case, Oral Mirror, Quick Essentials)

In the year Wushen, fifth lunar month, on the day Guisi, using 'Shen' (Shen) as the Month General, the class is started on the hour Mao. The person seeking the divination is Xu Ruren, born in the year Jimao, thirty years old this year, asking about illness. This case is recorded in the books Zhan An, Kou Jian, and Jie Yao.

The flat layout of the lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their corresponding heavenly generals:巳 is occupied by the Nobleman,午 by the Teng Snake,未 by the Vermilion Bird,申 by Liu He,酉 by Gou Chen,戌 by the Azure Dragon,亥 by Tian Kong,子 by the White Tiger,丑 by Tai Chang,寅 by the Black Tortoise,卯 by Tai Yin,辰 by the Heavenly Empress. On a day with the day stem癸 and daytime divination, the Nobleman is at巳, and the卯 hour belongs to the day, so it matches perfectly. The heavenly generals are arranged in a clockwise order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem癸 (with its lodging palace at丑) has午, which is occupied by the Teng Snake; the second lesson,午 has亥, which is occupied by Tian Kong; the third lesson, the day branch巳 has戌, which is occupied by the Azure Dragon; the fourth lesson,戌 has卯, which is occupied by Tai Yin. The three transmissions: the first transmission is午, representing the wife's wealth爻, which is occupied by the Teng Snake. Since午 is in the旬 empty position, it is marked as 'empty午'; the middle transmission is丁亥, representing the brother爻, which is occupied by Tian Kong; the final transmission is壬辰, representing the official ghost爻, which is occupied by the Heavenly Empress. The day癸巳 belongs to the Jiashen旬, with the旬 empty positions at午 and未. The Teng Snake is riding on the empty position of午, which is pressing on the day stem, which is referred to as 'the snake meets empty, which is partial empty' in the text.

Shao Yanhe said: When Teng Snake meets Kongwang, it is called "pian kong." She was tormented by a woman, leading to a weak and insufficient heart, so that when she was hungry, she would feel qi rising to her chest and her eyes would become dim. She gave birth to many children, but none were strong. One of her sons had an extra toe. In her middle years, her blood sea deteriorated, and by the time she was around fifty, she would develop a blood tumor, which could not be pierced. If it was pierced, she would die, and the time would be between forty-four and forty-five. She was unsuitable for raising silkworms all her life, for fear of getting sick from it. Later events showed that the Xu Ruren's father had a concubine, who was the wet nurse of Ruren. After her father's death, the wet nurse lived with Ruren in the Xu Si Li household, and often had conflicts with the Si Li. Thus Ruren fell ill, and the root of her illness was this wet nurse. She gave birth to eleven children, but only three survived. One of her sons had an extra toe. At forty-one, her blood deteriorated, and three years later, the tumor formed. At forty-four, she got sick while going out at night to raise silkworms, caught a cold in her stomach, and the tumor broke open, releasing several liters of blood, and she died.

The basis for the deduction is that the day stem has a wu fire, representing the heart. The癸 water extinguishes the wu fire, and the wu fire falls in kongwang, indicating that the heart is restrained and weak. Wu represents a woman, and falling in kongwang means no official status, which matches the identity of a concubine. The teng snake disturbs the wu fire, so it is known that she is troubled by this woman. Wu also represents the eyes, which are disturbed by the teng snake and water, and further weakened by kongwang, leading to poor vision. The pain when hungry is because the person was born in the jima year, with the禄 in wu. Since wu is empty, the禄 is disordered, and the teng snake disturbs it, causing pain. The presence of qinglong on the shu earth indicates an extra toe; shu itself also represents the foot. The mention of blood failure is because the hai water is in kongwang and is also under tian kong. The mention of blood tumor is because the chen earth is added to the hai water and is under tianhou. Chen is solid earth, placed on the blood position, leading to a blood tumor. Tianhou represents filth, and the癸 water enters the chen tomb, so the tumor breaks and causes bleeding to death.

On the Guisi day, Ma Mengui divined the gathering (Guo family divination case).

On the Guisi day of the Dingchou year, second month, with the Hai (Dengming) as the Month General, the lesson is cast by placing it on the Si hour. The person asking the question is Ma Mengui, inquiring about the imperial examination hall. This case is from Guo's "Divination Cases."

The flat layout of the lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals:巳 is occupied by the Nobleman,午 by Teng Snake,未 by Vermilion Bird,申 by Liu He,酉 by Gou Chen,戌 by Azure Dragon,亥 by Tian Kong,子 by White Tiger,丑 by Tai Chang,寅 by Black Tortoise,卯 by Tai Yin,辰 by Heavenly Empress. The Nobleman is on巳, and the heavenly generals are arranged in order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem癸 (located on丑) has未, which is occupied by Vermilion Bird; the second lesson, on未 has丑, which is occupied by Tai Chang; the third lesson, on the day branch巳 has亥, which is occupied by Tian Kong; the fourth lesson, on亥 has巳, which is occupied by the Nobleman. The positions on the heaven plate all conflict with those on the earth plate, forming a reverse echo pattern. The three transmissions: the first transmission is巳, representing the wife's wealth爻, occupied by the Nobleman; the middle transmission is亥, representing the brother爻, occupied by Tian Kong; the final transmission is again巳, wife's wealth爻, occupied by the Nobleman. The Nobleman is on巳 and adds to亥, which is the heavenly gate, as mentioned later in the text, 'the noble virtue ascends to the heavenly gate'.

Guo Yüqing said: In this lesson, the initiating transmission is the noble virtue ascending the heavenly gate; the combination of the year pillar and the ghost god on the year pillar forms exactly the character "Kui"; the native's pillar is riding on the native's own post-horse, and the middle transmission also has the old age horse and the day horse, two layers of post-horse—there are many advantages. Only a drawback is that the Vermilion Bird is riding on the position of "Wei" and is pressing upon the day stem, thus attacking the day stem. It is precisely occupying an important position. This minor flaw, can it ruin the remaining nine parts of purity?

The Vermilion Bird has fallen into Kongwang, is weak and confined, and lacks vitality; although the noble virtue has reached the heavenly gate, the lesson is closed off, and both are mere names without real substance. Why didn't Guo Jun mention this point?
